Mastering a campfire is easier than you might think. With some basic tools and tips, you’ll be well on your way to crafting a cozy fire pit for roasting marshmallows and crackling conversation. Before you begin, it’s important to make sure you’re building your fire in the proper location. Make sure to choose a dry, fireproof surface like brick, concrete, or stone and always keep a large clearing around the area, experts recommend 6 10 feet at least.

The triangular teepee style method is a triedand-true favorite for any skill level.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

* Matches

* Tinder (dry pine nee dles, leaves, or bark)

* Kindling (short twigs or small branches)

* Firewood (small logs)

Pro tip: Aged logs will catch fire faster than newer ones.

Phenology, the Art of Nature as Your Guide

Phenology is a useful tool for gardeners to keep in their back pocket. This practice, used since ancient times, relies on local indicators to in form your gardening journey, such as deter mining when to plant certain crops, or warn ing when certain pests will arrive. It’s the study of the natural world, a careful observation of cyclical/seasonal natural phenomena, the re lationship between visible life stages of plants, animals, insects, and changes in climate.

Some plants (like lilacs, honeysuckle, and maples) are considered indicator plants, as they are frequently used because they grow in so many areas of the US. While phenol ogy adages may sound like folklore, they are actually rooted in people’s real observa tions of nature throughout history, around the world. It’s used across many different fields, such as medicine, farming and biolo gy. Even many birds use phenology, as they must time their nesting so that eggs hatch when insects are present for nestlings to eat.

Your local nursery, garden club, or botanical garden can be a great resource for phenolog ical information. Phenology is highly loca tion-specific, so it’s important to carefully track the experiences in your own garden, to be most beneficial.

COMMON PHENOLOGY ADAGES

Plant corn when the oak leaves are the size of a squirrel’s ear.

When maples are beginning to un furl their leaves, plant perennials.

A dry March and a wet May, fill barns & bays with corn & hay.

The Wonders of Elderberry

The father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, referred to the elder tree as his medicine chest. Today, many agree that his wisdom about the humble tree still applies. Its berries and flow ers are packed with health and immunity benefits. Full of antioxidants and vitamins, elderberry has been said to boost your immune system, decrease stress and even reduce inflammation.

Some of its other claims to fame:

* Protects and fights against bacterial & viral infections.

* Helps clear sinus infections.

* Reduces duration and symptoms of the cold or flu.

* Eases allergy symptoms.

Whether it’s a tea, a gummy, a pill, or syrup— you can get elderberry in many forms these days. If you’re looking for a thriftier solution than store-bought remedies, try making your own syrup instead! Use caution as there is a mild toxin in the raw berries, but after about 45 minutes of cooking the toxins that may cause an upset stomach will deactivate and become safe for consumption.

Make Your Own Linden Soap

WHY LINDEN?

The bright, energizing scent with hints of spice and honey.

TIP Store your soap bars unwrapped. Not only will they lend a refreshing scent to your linen closet, they will also harden and therefore last longer.

SAFETY NOTE Sodium hydroxide lye is corrosive. Be sure to wear protective eyewear, rubber or plastic gloves, and long-sleeve shirts and pants for protection. And work only in a well-ventilated room, as the lye mixture produces dangerous fumes

YOU WILL NEED

7.9 oz distilled water

3.4 oz lye (sodium hydroxide)

8 oz coconut oil

8 oz olive oil

8 oz palm oil

Linden blossom essential oil

Soap mold

Hand blender

Mix the distilled water and lye. Because this mixture will generate heat, slowly add the lye into the water, then set aside to cool. In another bowl, melt coconut oil, olive oil and palm oil together to liquid consisten cy. Set aside to cool. Slowly pour lye mixture and oils together to form the “soap batter.” Use a stick blend er to mix the ingredients and avoid introducing air bubbles. Add the linden fragrance oil to your desired scent while the mixture appears the consistency of pudding. Pour the liquid “soap batter” into a mold and let harden for 1 3 days. Turn out mold and cut into bars. Cure them in a cool, dry location for 4 6 weeks before use.

* Add the raw honey, mix well.

* Store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to two months.

The moon may seem like it’s white or gray most of the time, but it actually takes on various shades, depending upon atmo spheric conditions and its position in the sky. In fact, the colors we perceive are just a result of scattered light which can result in a wide spectrum of different colors. Our Elliott Ives collection even derives color palette inspiration from these spectacular lunar observations.

When viewed outside of Earth’s atmosphere, the moon appears brownish-gray, but when viewed within the Earth’s atmosphere it of ten appears red, orange or golden, indicating the moon is near the horizon. A blue moon is more rare and happens when large dust par ticles move within our viewing path. And fi nally, there’s the mysterious purple moon. While there’s photographic evidence of its existence, it is un known what causes the violet hue.
