PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com

recognize some of the challenges that we are up against as a small community," she said. There are eight candidates in the race for a council seat. Current Deputy Mayor Barb Tobin is seeking a fourth term. Tobin was an art teacher at North Grenville District High School for 29 years and has been a resident of North Grenville for more than 35. Over the past three terms, she has acted as chair of the parks, recreation and culture department as well as the municipality's corporate services committee, the active transportation advisory committee, and currently chairs the public works committee. She is also vice chair of the Beth Donovan Hospice board and an active volunteer. The other current member of council who's resubmitted their name is Frank Onasanya, seeking a second term. Born in Western Nigeria, Onasanya emigrated to England in 1983 and then to Canada in 1996. He moved to Kemptville in 2000 and joined the Kemptville District Soccer Club, for which he served as head coach and technical director for seven years before starting his own soccer training academy. John Barclay, executive director of the Old Town Kemptville Business Improvement Area (BIA), has taken a leave of ab-

lyons g

sence from that role to run for a council seat. Barclay is an advocate for local food and agriculture and has acted as director of the Kemptville Farmers' Market Board, as well as the Oxford Mills Community Association, and resource developer at the Kemptville Youth Centre. He also runs his own film production company called Triune Productions. Barclay is an active member of the Kemptville and District Community Association. Deron Johnston is also seeking a position as councillor. Johnston first ran for council in 2014 and has since familiarized himself with the community as the unofficial town crier, and through various volunteer initiatives. Johnston is a former board member of the Kemptville Farmers' Market, the Kemptville Youth Centre, Beth Donovan Hospice, North Grenville Community Fund and the Oxford Mills Community Association. He is currently an active board member for the Kemptville and District Community Association, as well as the programming co-ordinator for the Downtown Prescott BIA. Former police officer Craig McCormick is running for council for the first time. Since his retirement, McCormick has spearheaded the not-for-profit organization, Kindling for Kids,

through his kindling business called Crackle Pop Kindling. McCormick donates a portion of the proceeds raised through his kindling sales to Children's Mental Health of Leeds and Grenville. Kristin Strackerjan is another new face. Strackerjan is a local mother of three who grew up in Halifax and has lived in North Grenville for eight years. She serves with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Aerospace Engineering officer and has more than 24 years' experience in that role. Strackerjan is vice president of the School Council for École élémentaire et secondaire publique Rivière Rideau, a volunteer organizer and a founder of the North Grenville Run/Walk Trail Club, a board member of the Ontario Parenting Connection, and a member of the Kemptville and District Community Association. Longtime North Grenville resident, Doreen O'Sullivan, is another council candidate. O'Sullivan has made deputations to North Grenville Council concerning Wellington Road, a neighbouring road to her home, in terms of its condition, posted speed limit, and the kind of traffic permitted to use the road. With the nomination period for the municipal election in October now over, the official lists of candidates running in North Grenville and Merrickville-Wolford have been released. North Grenville One of the earliest announcements to come for the running in North Grenville was from incumbent Mayor David Gordon, who is seeking a third term as head of council. Gordon is a retired police officer and has lived in the North Grenville community with his family for 35 years. He was first elected in 2010. Gordon says his reason for running again is his passion and love for North Grenville. "North Grenville is the shining light of Leeds and Grenville," he said. "This has taken hard work and dedication to make North Grenville great. My vision to move forward once again is more economic growth and low taxes. With economic growth, we can keep taxes low and promote jobs for residents." Gordon added that North Grenville is the fastest growing community in eastern Ontario and is the most financially sound municipality in Leeds and Grenville. Gordon has served as vice chair of the Leeds and Grenville Board of Education, director on the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark Health Unit board, was a founding member of the Kemptville Youth Centre, for which he served as chair and director for five years. Current Coun. Jim Bertram is also running for mayor, after taking a leave of absence from his council duties due to a double cancer diagnosis. Bertram is a retired teacher of 33 years, having taught from the kindergarten level to grade 13, and was also a French teacher at Queen's University. Bertram is the creator of the North Grenville Rural Summit; a large-scale event showcasing local food and agri-business and providing networking opportunities for professionals in the field. He lives just outside of Kemptville and has two children, as well as two grandchildren. "I believe that value, integrity, and action equals service," Bertram says. "I have demonstrated all of those qualities, and the ca-

pacity to bring my ideas to fruition." Another familiar face, Elwood Armour, has joined the mayoral race this term. Armour ran for council in 2014 but did not acquire a seat. He has many years of experience as an accountant and auditor for the federal government, and has spoken about the importance of maintaining the Kemptville Campus as a pillar in the community and believes agribusiness should be the focus. A newcomer and Kemptvillebased mother of three, Nancy Peckford, is the final mayoral candidate. Peckford has more than 20 years' experience working in politics, and was named one of the Women's Executive Network Top 100 Powerful Women in Canada in 2014. In 2017, Peckford was the architect of Daughters of the Vote; a groundbreaking national program in which 338 diverse young women took the seats of their respective Ministers of Parliament in the House of Commons on International Women's Day. Peckford says raising three young children and interacting with the community in many ways is what lead to her decision to run for mayor, as she'd like to be an agent of change. "Especially in ways that maintain Kemptville's small-town feel, but also

rio Tree Seed Plant in Angus. I have had an opportunity to discuss with the minister the negative impact the closure would have on operations at the Ferguson Forest Centre, including putting 13 full-time jobs and over $1 million in annual economic activity in jeopardy. During the recent campaign, I pledged to work with whatever government was elected on June 7 to revisit the closure decision. I want to thank (Natural Resources and Forestry) Minister (Jeff) Yurek for quickly recognizing the need to take a closer look at the situation by consulting widely with all stakeholders affected, including those in Leeds-GrenvilleThousand Islands and Rideau Lakes." Yurek announced the review earlier this week. The following

is a statement from Yurek regarding the decision: "After hearing concerns related to the closure of the Ontario Tree Seed Plant and consulting with my colleagues, I have directed my ministry to review the closure decision," he said. "We will be taking the time to hear from stakeholders, including sitting down with the tree nursery industry and other interested parties as part of this review. “I am committed to taking a closer look at the details of the situation and making sure decisions are made in the best interests of the people of Ontario." MERRICKVILLE-WOLFORD STAFF CONVERSATIONS ANONYMOUSLY RECORDED, DISTRIBUTED PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Someone has been recording Merrickville-Wolford staff members' conversations without their knowledge or permission, and is distributing the recordings publicly. "It is a very sensitive issue that involves an ongoing police investigation regarding the unauthorized taping of staff conversations," confirmed MerrickvilleWolford Mayor Dave Nash. Nash also confirmed that the method of distribution is both by mail, as well as anonymous dropoff at local homes. Reportedly, the recordings have been in both CD and USB format. A press release issued

July 24 from the municipality stated that the matter is being taken very seriously, and that the OPP have been contacted and an investigation has been launched. Const. Cathy Lindsey with the Kemptville OPP detachment confirmed July 24 that acting staff Sgt. Rene Cadieux and detective Sgt. Anthony Donnelly attended the July 23 council meeting in Merrickville regarding the situation, and that an investigation is currently underway. Police are urging anyone that may receive or has received an unexpected package to not handle it and call the police immediately. For updates as they become available, visit www.insideottawavalley.com.

BE BEACH SMART Spending days at the beach is a summer ritual that we all enjoy, but it's important to know when it's safe to swim or if you should skip that dip. In late June, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit began its annual weekly water samplings of the public beaches within its jurisdiction. These include beaches in Almonte, Carleton Place, Lanark, Smiths Falls and Rideau Ferry in Lanark County, and others in North Grenville, Merrickville, Westport, Portland and Toledo in Leeds and Grenville. According to release by the health unit, five water samples are taken each week and tested for E. coli bacteria. They state that the bathing water standard is 100 E. coli, so any water tested that exceeds that amount will receive a sign posted at the beach notifying the public it's unsafe to swim. Weekly updates indicating which beaches are open, closed or have received caution status are released every Friday morning. The testing will continue until Aug. 31. As of the last testing results updated at July 25 at 3 p.m., all public beaches are open with the exception of Centennial beach in Carleton Place and South Crosby (Sand Lake) beach in Rideau Lakes, which are in caution status. The level of bacteria at the aforementioned beaches is currently not recommended for swimming. This is a public service the health unit provides informing the public that the level of bacteria might be a health risk if you or your family go swimming. Families can still choose to go into the water at their own risk, but there are several reasons why you shouldn't. "Research has shown that when people are swimming at beaches where the water has a high E. coli level, there is a direct relationship with an increase in ear, eye, nose and throat infections in swimmers," states the release. The unsafe for swimming sign will remain at a beach until it meets the bathing water standard. E. coli isn't the only thing tested when the health unit samples water from our local beaches. They are also looking for blue-green algae blooms, accidental spills or anything else that could pollute the water, making it unsafe for the public. This could include dirty water from storm sewers or streets, faulty septic systems, etc. Other tips to keep in mind when navigating public beaches is to avoid swimming if high winds cause the water to look cloudy or after a heavy rain. There are plenty of tips available, as well as information on the weekly beach results, on the health unit website - healthunit.org. It's been a hot and humid summer so far and many of us have taken advantage of the beach to cool off from the sun's rays. Most of the time the water we swim in is safe, states the health unit, but caution should always be taken to ensure you and your family have a safe remainder of the summer.

WHO WE ARE OPINION

UNINFORMED VOTE MORE DANGEROUS THAN NO VOTE AT ALL DON'T JUST PICK A NAME OUT OF A HAT, WRITES PAULINA HREBACKA PAULINA HREBACKA Column

As you may know, Civics class is mandatory for high school students in Ontario. It's a half-credit course, which spans over about two months and focuses on Canadian politics - some current issues, but primarily the history of the electoral system and our past prime ministers. I remember taking this course in Grade 10. I enjoyed researching the different party platforms and trying

to figure out where I fell on the political spectrum. Some weeks, our teacher would assign that we "watch the news" for our homework that evening, and we'd return to class the next day to discuss real, relevant issues and share our views. To me and many of my friends, it was an interesting class; informative, engaging, and exciting. When I look back on it now, I realize how important it was, but its brevity is concerning. In a time when young people are looked down at for their apparent disengagement in politics, we need to realize the necessity of the mandatory Civics class in giving students a fair chance to find and develop their unique political interest, and two months isn't enough time for a 16-year-old to do that.

So, before we launch a propaganda campaign pressuring young people to "get out and vote," why don't we encourage them to educate themselves first, and provide them with the necessary resources? After all, what's worse: an uninformed vote, or no vote at all? With the municipal elections fast approaching this fall, I'd like to make a call out to my fellow local millennials: if you are going to vote this year, I hope that your decision to educate yourself and carefully mold an informed opinion are part of that commitment. Don't just pick a name out of a hat: Research those names, thoroughly. Identify the reasons why they might be worthy of your vote, and evaluate their promises. Do they have reasonable education and experience to follow-through on what they say they'll do? At the end of the day, it's you who they will be serving. Corners where he spent his youth working on his family and neighbour's farms. Lloyd later worked driving a truck for the City of Ottawa, delivered milk, waited tables and drove a taxi. He subsequently started his own Surge milking machine dealership in North Gower and later moved to Manotick where he built his home and shop. Lloyd was heavily involved with the Ottawa Carleton Plowmen's Association and the International Plowing Match held in Richmond in 1983. Highly regarded in the farming community, Lloyd will always be remembered as a senior statesman of agriculture in Ottawa-Carleton. Proceeds from this tournament will be divided equally between the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation and the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Foundation. Kemptville plans to use the funds to purchase much needed equipment for use in cancer patient care. The $125 per person early registration (prior to Aug. 7) fee includes nine holes, a cart, dinner, awards presentation and silent and live auctions. To attend the dinner and auction only is $50. Registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 9 and can be done online at www.emeraldlinks.com. In September 2001, the Ottawa-Carleton Plowmen's Association and the Ontario Plowmen's Association hosted Rural Expo 2001, the International Plowing Match in Navan. This event had two goals; to promote the agricultural community and to provide a lasting legacy to the community. As part of this legacy, supporters of the IPM2001 continue to raise funds toward patient care for Ottawa area hospital through this tournament. This week the Kemptville Advance embarks along a new path that takes it back to its roots. Readers will notice their community newspaper has recommitted itself to local news. No longer will it feature

a regional section in the front half of the publication. Rather, news from North Grenville, Merrickville-Wolford and neighbouring municipalities will figure more prominently starting from the front page. This means

readers will no longer have to search deep into their edition for the continuation of that week's top story. Local breaking news, council information as well as sports and human interest features move to the

lead pages instead of their traditional spot in the second section. The pagination system, which our readers have also told us causes no end of confusion, has also seen an overhaul which should make reading the paper

less complicated. These changes don't mean an end to all regional coverage. It just moves that information a bit further back, allowing us to place greater emphasis on the stories we know matter to you the

most. We hope these latest adjustments to our format will help add to your enjoyment of your local newspaper. Please keep reading, in print or online, and thank you for your support.

didates is Jim McManaman, chair of the annual Sweetheart Brunch fundraiser and president of Peak Growth Business Advisors. McManaman is an active member of the North Grenville Business Builders and board member of the Kemptville District Hospital Foundation, as well as Grenville Community Futures Development Corporation. He has also served as a business committee member for the North Grenville Economic Development Advisory Committee. Merrickville-Wolford A size reduction is in effect for Merrickville-Wolford council this term, as a mayor and four councillors will be elected, as opposed to the previous seven total members. The four councillors will be split by two for each ward - Merrickville and Wolford. The official list shows 12 names total; four running for mayor, four for councillor for the Merrickville ward, and four for the Wolford ward. Currently completing his first term, incumbent mayor David Nash is seeking a second. Nash has lived in the area for nearly 50 years and has been a Wolford resident for the past 15. Before he took the mayoral seat from Doug Struthers in 2014, Nash served as Deputy Mayor for the 20102014 term. Struthers, who served the community as councillor for six years and as mayor for 14 years, is also running for the mayoral seat again. The chair of the Rideau Corridor Landscape Strategy, Struthers came to Merrickville in 1986 with his family. He has served on the Leeds-Grenville and Lanark Food Charter Steering Committee, Mayors for the Future of Agriculture in Ontario, and the Merrickville-Wolford Police Services Board. He was

voted into the position of Warden of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in 2005 and again in 2007. Current Deputy Mayor Anne Barr, has put her name forward for mayor as well. Originally elected as councillor-at-large in 2010, Barr was re-elected in 2014 and appointed by her colleagues as deputy mayor for the 2014-2018 term. The final mayoral candidate is current Merrickville ward Coun. Chuck MacInnis. MacInnis retired from his duties as a police officer in 2012 and was elected to council in 2014. He has been a resident of Merrickville for the past 18 years, and is also a licensed private investigator. He taught police foundations at Algonquin College. Those in the running for Merrickville ward councillor include incumbent Coun. Victor Suthren, an author and historian with 13 books to his name. From 1986 to 1997, Suthren was the general director of the Canadian

War Museum. He was then appointed as an honorary captain in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1997 to 2014. Joining Suthren in the race for the Merrickville ward is council veteran of 20 years, Timothy Molloy, Tony Iannazzo, and former Merrickville fire chief, Bob Foster. Foster retired in 2017 after 40 years as a firefighter. As for the Wolford ward, former councillor Don Halpenny is seeking re-election. Halpenny operates a local dairy farm and was first elected in 2010. Joining him in the running is Yves Grandmaitre, Michael Cameron, and former chair of Christmas in Merrickville, Mark Scullino. For both North Grenville and Merrickville-Wolford, the deputy mayor position is appointed by council members following the election. This newspaper will be running candidate profiles leading up to the Oct. 22 election. Look for them in print and online at www.insideottawavalley.com.

Kora is no longer hiding and shows curiosity at times but can still be startled by sudden moves. She's always seeking protection from her brother Kasey. They are looking for stability and when you first get them home, they will require a sanctuary room with all of their necessities including food, toys, scratching post, litter box and hiding area. Have this room prepared before they come home. Take it slow and please have some patience with them. We're confident that Kasey and Kora, with time and with the right owner, will show you what delightful, sweet, affectionate cats they can be to have around. It's time for them to move on. The adoption fee for both cats is reduced to $200 total. They are available at LAWS.

OPINION

RAISING THE NEXT GENERATION FARMER BEING RAISED ON A FARM GIVES A DIFFERENT OUTLOOK ON LIFE, DIANA FISHER WRITES DIANA FISHER Column

I didn't grow up on a farm. I never imagined myself a farmer ... until I fell in love with one. Of our five daughters, only one showed a real interest in the farm. From the age of 15 she was here with us, birthing lambs, taming cows and training a donkey. At least once a week the Farmer had to go out and holler at Annie to put some shoes on. She would be out there barefoot in the barnyard in a bikini

top and jean shorts, a baby duck under one arm and a lamb in the other. Before long we could count on Annie to look after the farm in our absence. She saw things in a very practical way - she didn't get upset over losses and she celebrated every little achievement, whether it was a healthy calf or a crop of tomatoes. Annie grew up to have a little farm girl of her own. Leti is fascinated with the rooster next door, the tractor in the shed and the barn cats in the basement. Like me, she can do without the chickens. They peck. The other night Leti was here and the first thing she wanted to do after dinner was head to the barn. "Well OK, but it's going to be mucky," I warned. It had rained quite a bit and the ground was very muddy.

"It's OK, Grandma," she replied. "I like mucky." We got sidetracked on the way to the chickens. The farm equipment was parked in the barn, side by side. "That's a tractor," Leti announced. "And that's a four-wheeler." She studied the third item. "You cut grass with it," I hinted. "Lawn mower!" she exclaimed, climbing aboard the ride-on mower. She fiddled with the key but didn't turn it. She jiggled the gear shift and patted the seat, looking behind her as if she was going to reverse out of the barn. "Let's do this!" she cried. I laughed. "Your dad must say that." Leti's dad has her feeding goats and pitching

hay. She even went up to her other grandma while she was on her horse and demanded to be pulled up into the saddle. Later we looked at the pictures and I asked her about it. "That's Princess," she said. "I was in the saddle." "I see that!" I said. "Were you scared?" "No. Grandma was there. The horse was hot." And she changed the subject, going off to look for her golf clubs. If you are raised on a farm, you are accustomed to early mornings. There are lives in the barn depending on your waking. If you are raised on a farm, you live by the weather. Rain or lack of it, sun or lack of it affects everything from your crops to the hay you feed your livestock. If you are raised on a farm, you know the pleasure and satisfaction of a

hard day's work. You don't need a gym membership you just need to get out there and hoe the garden, pitch the hay and muck out the stalls. After working up a sweat, you will appreciate the results of your efforts. If you are raised on a farm, you know what it means to depend on your neighbours. You rely on them to tell you if they notice something strange like a brush fire or a flood. You need to keep your relationship in good standing, because your cows might end up on their front lawn some misty morning. If you are raised on a farm, you have a different outlook on life. You know where your food comes from. You have witnessed births, growth, harvest, and death. Life is less mysterious and startling when you live on a farm. It

has a matter-of-fact quality to it. A man who works the land has an honesty and integrity about him that is born out of life on the farm. A woman on the farm is in touch with nature and life and the power the earth holds. We are not guaranteed Leti will be a farmer when she grows up. Maybe she will travel the world and settle in an exotic locale overseas. Maybe she will be drawn to the lights and noise of the city. But I do know this: When Leti thinks of the comfort and safety of home, she will think of a farm. Diana Leeson Fisher is a regular columnist who grew up in the small town of Kemptville. KDH'S SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS RECOGNIZED WITH 2 AWARDS butes the organization's outstanding results to a corporate commitment to sustainability, with a focus on waste reduction. "We are extremely proud of our waste reduction results, especially a decrease of 16.5 tonnes of general nonhazardous waste between 2015 and 2016," she said. KDH's waste diversion efforts include donating unused medical supplies and equipment to nonprofit organizations that ship them to war-torn countries such as Syria. The hospital also donates old linens and towels to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, rather than sending them to landfill. KDH's action plan, with clear targets on waste, water and energy consumption, also led to reductions in total electricity and natural gas consumption from 2016 to 2015 of 3.9 per cent and 3.3 per cent, respectively. KDH's sustainability efforts revolve around three pillars: recycling, conservation and education. In addition to training all

staff on the environmental program and empowering them to contribute and participate, the hospital works with local students, including a group from École catholique SainteMarguerite-Bourgeoys in nearby Merrickville, who presented displays about the importance of recycling at KDH on April 23 and shared their Earth Day message: "Don't throw away our future." A total of 110 hospital sites completed the 2017 Green Hospital Scorecard survey, which reports on data from the 2016 calendar year. Frank J. Vassallo, KDH's chief executive officer, acknowledged that it took the entire KDH team working together to achieve these award-winning results for environmental performance. "Congratulations to everybody at KDH for doing their part to make our hospital more sustainable," he said. "I firmly believe that as a community leader, KDH has a responsibility to minimize its ecological im-

Kemptville District Hospital (KDH) is the proud recipient of two 2017 Ontario Green Health Care Awards in the small hospital category, having been recognized with both the Green Hospital of the Year Award and the Waste Award during a virtual awards ceremony hosted by the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care on June 26. Award recipients were determined by selecting the top performing facilities from the 2017 Green Hospital Scorecard, which is managed by the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care. KDH won the Green Hospital of the Year Award for achieving a top overall score in the 2017 Green Hospital Scorecard, and received the Waste Award for achieving a top waste score. KDH is in esteemed company: the other 2017 Green Hospital of the Year Award recipients were Toronto-area facilities St. Michael's Hospital, Michael Garron Hospital, and Providence Healthcare. In the Waste Award category, the top performers in the larger facility categories (nonacute, community and academic) were Trillium Health Partners - Queensway Health Centre, Toronto, South Muskoka Memorial Hospital (Bracebridge) and St. Joseph's Health Care London - Parkwood Institute. The Green Hospital Scorecard shows a hospital's environmental performance in five areas: energy, water, waste, pollution prevention and corporate leadership. It helps identify potential areas for improvement and informs target-setting, while offering the opportunity to be recognized through annual gold, silver and bronze level achievements. KDH's 2017 results also earned the hospital a Silver Seal in the Green Hospital Scorecard for the second year running. MEMBERS WANTED FOR COMMITTEE The Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Region (MRSPR) is seeking source protection committee members who are interested in protecting municipal drinking water sources in the Mississippi and Rideau Valley watersheds. The MRSPR committee was established in 2007 as a result of the province's Clean Water Act. The committee guides local efforts to protect drinking water at the source and is made up of one-third municipal, onethird economic and onethird public sector representatives. The composition ensures that a variety of local interests are represented at the decisionmaking table as the committee works to oversee the implementation of sciencebased source protection plans. The committee is currently undergoing a renewal to ensure that it remains in compliance with Ontario Regulation 288/07, the

regulation that governs source protection committees under Ontario's Clean Water Act. The committee is looking for two economic sector representatives to liaise on behalf of industrial, commercial or small business interests as well as two public sector representatives to liaise on behalf of general public, environmental, First Nations and non-governmental organization interests. "If you have experience and knowledge in one of these two sectors and have an interest in protecting drinking water sources we hope you will apply," said Brian Stratton, Mississippi-Rideau source water protection project manager. "Among other qualifications, these positions require a multi-year commitment, an ability to understand scientific and technical reports and attendance at the two or more source protection

committee meetings held each year. Applicants must also live or work in the Mississippi and Rideau watersheds." Future work of the committee includes the review of new scientific and technical information to ensure that the source protection plan and its supporting reports remain current and relevant. Further details regarding these part-time positions including descriptions of roles and responsibilities and an application form are available online at www.mrsourcewater.ca/ en/source-protection-committee-member-recruitment. A small per diem as well as expenses (mileage and meals) will be paid while working on source protection business. Applications are being accepted until Aug. 27. That is what local naturopathic doctor Shawn Yakimovich showed more than 50 participants during the 8th annual Medicinal Herb Walk through Ferguson Forest trails on July 21, hosted by Friends of the Ferguson Forest Centre (FFFC). Yakimovich teaches herb walkers about the medicinal benefits, historical uses and current applications local species - from common plants like dandelion to less familiar ones like blue cohosh. SPENDING QUIET EVENINGS TOGETHER A WARM MEMORY FOR COLUMNIST MARY COOK MARY COOK Column

The heat of the summer had settled into the old log house. Even with the windows wide open, covered with the homemade screens Father had made, very little air came in, and no heat went out. At least the Findlay Oval had been moved to

the summer kitchen. When it became unbearable, after supper and after the kitchen had been redded up, we settled into a routine that gave us relief, while at the same time giving me the warmest feeling deep in my stomach, and it had nothing to do with the beating sun that had pounded down on our house all day. Father would be the first to move. He would drag out the rocking chair that sat by the stove, and from where he could rest his feet on the oven door to read the paper. Of course, there was no stove there in the summer. Then my sister Audrey would take two kitchen chairs outside and put them on the grass be-

side the back stoop. Without being asked, my three brothers, well aware of the routine, grabbed the braided rug from the doorway and tossed it on the ground a few feet away from the back step where the grass was high. Mother took the twig chair, the only piece of the twig furniture she could tolerate, and moved it off the stoop to help form the circle we had made on the east side of the old log house. The sun was going down, and long shadows soon touched us, and I knew that before long, dusk would be with us, and then the blessed darkness of a Renfrew County night. Until then, there would just be idle chatter. Father

of the word they gave. Of course, I couldn't spell, so I was left out. I didn't mind in the least. I was too caught up in the familiar night sounds around me. I could hear a cricket. Was it the same cricket we heard during the day? Mother said they brought good luck. As the night blackened around us, I could see the red smouldering tobacco brighten in the bowl of Father's pipe when he drew on it. Not enough to give us light, but enough to tell me that Father was content ... resting after long hours in the fields that day in the blistering sun. I could feel my eyes becoming heavy. I leaned my head against Audrey's shoulder. The night sounds around me couldn't keep me from nodding off. I knew I would waken in the morning in bed, laying on top of the feather mattress in my flourbag underwear, not sure how I got

there. But in those moments of darkness, I would again marvel at how rich my family was, while everyone was talking about something called the Depression, which to me was happening in some other land. talking about the hay he had cut that day, the brothers about the catch of mud pout from the Bonnechere, Audrey asking Mother if she thought the wild strawberries along the train tracks would be ready for picking. As for me, sitting on the grass at Mother's feet, I just listened, knowing I had little to add to the talk around me. Our arms and legs had been covered with something that came in a bottle from Ritza's Drugstore, so the mosquitoes stayed well away. Mother had her mouth organ, and as I knew she would, the first tune she played was The Sidewalks of New York. Sometimes, if Audrey knew the tune, she would sing softly in her sweet high voice, and I would again marvel at her talent. The three boys played a game where you had to come up with a word that started with the last letter

the first time she attended an herb walk, she was blown away. "I thought it was incredible," she said. "We had about 12 people then, and it's only grown bigger and bigger, and Shawn is just amazing." One of the first plants the group discovered on the Settler's Trail was achillea millefolium, better known as yarrow. "The uses of yarrow are many," said Yakimovich. "First and foremost, it's what we call a vulnerary and a hemostatic, so it helps heal wounds and stop bleeding - whether that's internal or external bleeding." He shared an interesting historical tale about yarrow, and where its scientific name is derived from. "The name 'achillea' comes from the Greek warrior Achilles, and it's said that after battles, (the soldiers) would grab handfuls of yarrow off of the battlefield and stick it in their

wounds to heal up." Yakimovich recommends the best practice of bruising the plant's leaves before pressing them against a cut to stop the bleeding much faster. He explained that yarrow also helps relax blood vessels, so it is useful for those with high blood pressure if it's taken as a tea on a daily basis. Yakimovich added that yarrow is very useful, plentiful, and it grows wild everywhere. "Once you have some, you'll always be able to harvest it," he said. "The nice thing about herbal medicine is most of them replicate themselves for free, very easily. That's one of the many advantages." Another common plant discovered on the herb walk was clover, which can be dried and consumed in the form of a tea to ease swollen lymph nodes - or tonsillitis, a possible result of congestion in the lymphatic system. "Pick the pink flowers when they're vibrant and

colourful and lay them out to dry until they're crispy," said Yakimovich. "It makes a nice, mild herbal tea and it's very safe - you could drink litres of it a day if you wanted." Yakimovich added that clover is also a particularly helpful plant for dry skin eruptions, such as psoriasis or eczema, because it helps clean out the lymphatic system, allowing blood to be filtered of its waste more effectively. "The skin is what's called the third kidney," he said. "So, if our normal organs of elimination, like the kidneys, liver, lungs, and the colon, can't get rid of stuff fast enough, then the skin takes over as well and things get pushed to the surface of the skin to get rid of it." As such, Yakimovich says that whenever we see a skin eruption, we have to treat it internally. "You can put things on externally, but that's never going to cure the reason why the eruption is happening." Another medicinal ben-

efit of clover is that it is helpful in alleviating whooping cough, a dry and spasmodic cough. "Clover is very gentle, but also very powerful in many ways," said Yakimovich. Along their journey, Yakimovich taught the large group of herb walkers about the medicinal benefits of countless other native plants including coltsfoot, cedar, jewelweed, and Ontario's provincial flower, the trillium. They were married nearly 66 years and together raised six children: Lydia (Bernard), Jane, William (Cathy), Michael, Robert (Rosanne) and James (Linda). Her greatest joy was her adored grandchildren Maisie and Ava. Also left to mourn her passing are her many Tysick nieces, nephews to whom she was very devoted and whose company she so enjoyed. Shirley was an amazing woman, strong, fierce and full of spark. She was a born warrior who had a streak of mischief and a ready twinkle in her eye. Her last day was spent at the family cottage on Christie Lake that she loved so much, listening to her birds and taking a dip in the lake. That was her heaven. Memorial to be announced.

DEVITT, Robert (Bob) - In loving memory of a dear father and grandfather who passed away July 31, 2006. Time speed on, 12 years have passed, Since death its gloom, its shadow cast. Within our home where all seemed bright, And took from us a shining light. We miss that light and ever will, His vacant place there is none can fill. Down here we mourn, but not in vain, For up in Heaven we will meet again. Always in our thoughts and sadly missed, Loving daughter Crystal, John, Meredith and Bailey

PHILLIPS, Beverly Rose (Dixon) In loving memory of my special sister who passed away August 2, 2016. When I lost you! I wish I could see you one more time, Come walking through the door. But I know that is impossible, I will hear your voice no more. I know you can feel my tears, And you don’t want me to cry, Yet my heart is broken because I cant understand why someone So precious had to die. I pray that God will give me strength… And somehow get me through, As I struggle with the heartache, That came When I Lost You. Still missed and Loved more each day. Barb

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
