Following an extensive traffic study along Concession Road, North Grenville council has approved the installation of a new, illuminated crosswalk at Campus Drive. The results of the traffic study were discussed earlier in the spring after the study was conducted over the fall by WSP Consulting. It was recommended that a painted crosswalk with signage be installed as four collisions had been documented between 2011 and 2016 at the subject intersection. WSP Consulting representative Adam Howell said the leading cause for

the collisions was the failure to yield right-of-way. The initial recommendation for a painted crosswalk with signage would have cost less than $2,000. However, in consideration of the pedestrian traffic and emergency vehicles travelling through the area, with many schools, a daycare, and a hospital in close vicinity, council decided to amend the resolution to call for an upgraded crosswalk with street lights and a pedestrian push button. The improvements add $42,000 to the cost of the crosswalk. Coun. John Barclay requested the amendment, noting that the area is a community safety zone. He said the initial traffic study report reflected more technical research, and that the many phone calls and emails from residents local to Concession Road influenced his decision to move

The Grenville Community Futures Development Corporation's (GCFDC) annual general meeting on June 21 at the Kemptville Campus was well-attended. Local Conservative MP Michael Barrett was among the many attendees, including representatives from North Grenville council, the Old Town Kemptville BIA, the North Grenville Chamber of Commerce, Leeds Grenville Small Business Enterprise Centre, Mayor Doug Malanka (Edwardsburgh/ Cardinal), and Mayor Jason Baker (Brockville). The event recognized the growth of one local small business; on-campus catering company, Catered Affairs. The company has been

operating out of its new location within Heritage Hall on campus since January. Owner Natalie Castellas was presented with an $80,400 business loan from GCFDC to support leasehold improvements and the purchase of new equipment. To open the meeting, Peckford announced that 51 per cent of the buildings on campus are now leased, and that North Grenville's municipal audit for 2018 showed a surplus following the purchase of the campus. Peckford said council is facing difficult decisions every day as to what should be done on campus next. "I have a particular passion for ensuring that ag education comes back in new and interesting ways," she said, "and perhaps this new fund - the Rural Innovation Initiative - will be

had been the site of a thorough trashing by a rather angry rodent. Everything that could be eaten had been. Everything that could be shredded had been. The raccoon had even busted a window to let himself out, when he ran out of snacks and things to break. Back to the squirrels. Paulina had been really hoping that their mother would claim them. She placed the box outside several times (with a hot water bottle in a sock to keep the babies warm and cozy) and although the mama squirrel did approach, she had no inclination to peer inside the box or reclaim her babies. My mother had long been waging war against small rodents on her property, ever since a chipmunk built a small village of tunnels under her garage that caused the entire floor to collapse. She decided to go along with Paulina for the ride to the sanctuary, however, because although she was not really interested in the saving of the orphans ("we have plenty of squirrels already...") she was interested in the animal shelter. When she sat down in Paulina's car, two more babies fell out of the glove compartment and rolled out onto her sandalled feet. She screamed and recoiled in horror. Paulina was laughing so hard she had to pull over for a moment to compose herself. And then she scooped the new babies up and added them to the others in the shoebox, because her grandmother was in no shape to assist. I hope Mama squirrel is enjoying her new-found freedom. SEWER CONSTRUCTION BEGINS NEXT WEEK Sewer construction will impact traffic at the County Road 43 and County Road 19 roundabout in Kemptville next week. Paulina was late for Sunday dinner. That is not exactly an uncommon occurrence, but it was strange this time because we had just heard from her and she said she was on her way. Half an hour after we had all eaten, she finally showed up, with a small shoebox under her arm. I could see some fabric poking out from under the lid. "There you are! I saved you something to eat .... whatcha got there?" She carefully placed the box on the kitchen island and slowly lifted the lid. Two baby red squirrels lay curled around each other in the T-shirt. They were pretty cute, but I wasn't sure why she had decided to box and bring baby rodents into my kitchen. "I got into my car after my workout and these guys rolled out from under the passenger seat!" She was quite concerned about the little fellas. We decided the mama must have found a way into the car and decided it was a great, safe place to put her twins. Paulina had been driving all over the countryside all weekend, covering events for the newspaper. The squirrels had likely been with her the whole time. I don't know how long baby squirrels can go without food and water but I was pretty sure they need-

ed to be fed often. "Uh, you should probably take those babies back into the car before the cat smells them or they will be gone in about ten seconds. And when you go home, put them outside to see if the mom will collect them." That was the plan but it kind of fell through as soon as the sun went down and there was no sign of Mrs. Squirrel. Paulina had roommates that night. The Farmer and another friend advised her to feed the squirrels warm milk through an eye dropper. The surrogate squirrel-mother got to work, feeding her charges through the night. The next day I Googled "how to care for orphaned squirrels" and was enlightened. I texted Paulina. "Gah! No cow's milk! And apparently you have to massage newborn squirrels to make them urinate ..." The next text came back with something like, "No way." I think she put them back outside then, with a note for their mother. But we also left several voice and email messages for the local wild animal sanctuary. They eventually got back to Paulina, who had once again taken the animals into the house to protect them from marauding skunks and raccoons. Speaking of raccoons, the Farmer was busy trying to repair the damage done by one or more raccoons to his father's cottage on the Rideau. Unfortunately, after cleaning up the ceiling tiles, cardboard and carpet that the raccoon had destroyed, he accidentally locked said beastie in the building. The men went back a few days later to see a cottage that looked like it

WATCH YOUR HEAD: PLAY SAFELY THIS SUMMER

Summer is finally here, marking the end of school for millions of young people in Canada and the peak season for camping, cycling, paddling, rock climbing and many other sports and adventurous activities. While these activities are fun, it is important to prevent the possibility of injury for kids and adults alike, by keeping head safety tips top of mind. Concussions - an injury to the brain that affects the way a person feels, behaves and remembers - represent more than one in five Ontario student injuries treated by a doctor or nurse. Symptoms from a concussion can impact daily life for weeks, months or even years. Despite how common the occurrence is, one in two Canadians have little or no knowledge about what a concussion is, and only 15 per cent of individuals can correctly identify the best treatments for it, according to the Government of Canada. Recognizing the signs of head injuries and taking precautions to prevent them is essential to enjoying outdoor adventures. That's why Scouts Canada and Hydro One, leaders in safety and prevention, have teamed up to inspire others to work safe, live safe and play safe. Through their new Head Safe program launching this fall, young people and their families will have access to tips on how to be Head Safe this summer to equip them with the knowledge to prevent, identify and respond appropriately to head injuries. The best way to prevent a head injury is to protect the head. Always wear a properly fitted helmet that is appropriate for the activity. Following a blow to the head or neck, or any other jarring impact, watch for concussion symptoms like a headache or pressure in the head; sensitivity to noise, light, motion or odours; drowsiness; nausea; dizziness; blurred vision; neck pain; feeling emotional, irritable, nervous or anxious; inability to concentrate; and difficulty remembering facts or events from earlier in the day. If a concussion is suspected, stop activity and treat any swelling with ice, seeking medical advice immediately. A person with a suspected concussion shouldn't be left alone and an ambulance should be called if they lose consciousness. The time it takes to recover from a head injury will vary. Returning to activities, sports or work can be a slow process and should be done with a doctor's progressive plan. Play safe this summer. To learn more visit www.scouts.ca/playsafe.

With those words, Bruce Noble suddenly had everyone's attention, just mentioning the name of Canada's basketball God. With a sly smile, the events co-ordinator for the Friends of Ferguson Forest Centre and chuckled that "sorry, it's not that type of Raptor!" Maybe, just maybe, there was some kid in the crowd who thought that maybe Leonard was waiting behind a tree. If they were disappointed, it was not for long, because Mat-

thew Morgan, a presenter with the Canadian Raptor Conservancy in Port Dover, Ont., did appear - with several cool birds in tow for the Birds of Prey show at the Ferguson Forest Centre in Kemptville on Saturday, June 22. The centre is home to between 150 and 200 raptors birds. They are known for their hooked beaks, that they exclusively eat meat, and that they capture their prey with their feet. "People bring us injured birds of prey," said Morgan. The centre will then "nurse them back to health." None of those wild, injured animals are used in the various educational shows the centre puts on.

to the Golden Eagle and the Red-Tailed Hawk. Among the amazing facts about these birds: • The Harris Hawk, which lives in the desert, "can sit on his toenails," atop a cactus, if it has to. "Google Harris Hawk stacking. It looks as ridiculous as it sounds," said Morgan. • The Great HornRimmed Owl, "love to catch and eat skunks. He will get sprayed. (The skunk) does not want to get eaten." So what's the owl's secret? "He cannot smell a single thing!" said Moran. Put another way: "He doesn't give a hoot!" • Vultures have no voice box, according to Morgan. • When Golden Eagles "start to disappear, that's a problem," said Morgan, like when the decline of the Peregrine Falcon and the Bald Eagle were, if you'll pardon the expression, like a canary in the mine shaft, so, their declining numbers do not bode well.

FARRELL, Stephen Kent It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Stephen Kent Farrell on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at the age of 53. Devoted son of Irene and the late Kent Farrell. Loving Brother of Gail Farrell and Scott (Amanda) Farrell. Best known as a very kind and fun loving uncle Steve to Autumn, Olivia and Ethan Farrell. Steve worked in Hi-Tech for many years starting at Digital Equipment in the early 1990’s. Later in life he found a home working at King’s Independent in Richmond. Steve’s early sports interests included hockey, curling and fishing. Steve was also an avid genealogist and golfer, had a love for music and playing the guitar. He thoroughly enjoyed life living on Lake Mississippi and spending summer holidays at Lakevale beach. He had a very warm heart and will be greatly missed by many. Joe passed away peacefully in the Perth hospital on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at the age of 86 years. Joe was a resident of Ompah. He retired from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) after thirty-one years of service. Born and raised in Barbados, Dick studied at McGill and married Mary in Calgary. Their shared lives took them to the South Shore of Montreal, where Dick headed CIL’s Explosives Research Lab. They raised their family of five in MontSaint-Hilaire and Otterburn Park, then moved on to Ottawa in the mid-80s (Dick assuming the role of Canada’s Chief Inspector of Explosives), and ultimately retirement in Perth, Ontario. Most recently, Dick moved to B.C. in 2017 to be with his children Philip and Margaret and their families. He maintained lifelong friendships that he had developed across the various communities that came to know him, with Perth most recently providing a network of close friends he treasured dearly, and who in turn supported him through what might otherwise have been very difficult years following Mary’s death. A gathering to remember his life will take place in Perth later this year. Donations in his memory would provide welcome support for the Perth food bank (“The Table”) or the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital.

MARGUERITE'S BOASTING CAME BACK TO BITE HER MARY COOK RECALLS MYSTERY OF THE LOST STORE-BOUGHT COOKIES MARY COOK Column

Lunchtime at the Northcote School seldom varied. First, we had to wash our hands in the basin at the back door, girls first, and then fresh water was brought in for the boys by one of the lads from senior fourth. Miss Crosby was high and clean hands. Only a few of us had lunch boxes. Everyone else

carried theirs in a wellused brown paper bag that had come from Briscoe's General Store. It may once have held bulk tea, sugar, or cookies, but was never discarded when brought home. My name was printed on the outside so that it wouldn't get mixed up with anyone else's lunch. Often, bad Marguerite brought both her fancy tin lunch box and something special in a brown paper bag. And she never failed to tell us what was in it either

... fresh fruit ... or storebought cookies. Why she didn't put everything in her tin lunch box was beyond me, but my friend Velma said it was just to show off how special her lunch was that day. One day Marguerite got her comeuppance. She put her box on the table at the back of the room, as we all did, and she then announced that in the paper bag was a fresh banana and real store-bought cookies. At recess, Miss Crosby ordered us all out of the school, and with her eyes on Emerson and Earl, said there was to be no nonsense. As she often did, to get out of the hot school-

house for a bit, she went over to the bench under the big maple and opened a book she was reading. My sister Audrey said that was when the deed was done. The next break was lunchtime - the big CPR clock at the front of the room had its hands at exactly 12 p.m. Grabbing our lunches off the back table after washing up, we headed outside to sit on the grass. I tried not to look at Marguerite's paper bag. "Guess I'll eat my banana first," she said loud enough that everyone could hear her. She dug into the bag, and out came, not a banana, but a round stone

covered with wet grass! Well! The roar could be heard in Admaston. She blamed Cecil, she blamed Emerson, both vowing they had nothing to do with it. The banana and the cookies were never found, but on the way home from school, I saw a banana peel in the grass leading out of the schoolyard. Velma said she saw a squirrel running away with a cookie. Miss Crosby turned a deaf ear to Marguerite's howling, who had to resort to eating what was in her fancy tin lunch box. And it was a long time before the hateful classmate again brought something special in a brown paper bag.

No one owned up to the deed, but my sister Audrey, who sat behind Cecil in school, was pretty sure she could smell banana off him when we came back in for afternoon lessons. GIRLS INC. SUMMER PROGRAMS RETURN TO KEMPTVILLE PAULINA HREBACKA phrebacka@metroland.com Non-profit organization Girls Inc. is creating safe spaces where girls are enabled to feel strong, smart, and bold through hands-on learning. Every summer, they offer week-long programs in Kemptville for girls aged six to 13 that introduce purposeful and inspirational activities building on selfworth and self-awareness. Each day, the girls take part in a variety of handson activities exploring the fields of math, science, technology, and engineering. This summer, Blast Off with Girls Inc. week will take place at Kemptville Pentecostal Church (1964 County Road 43) from July 8-12 and

Go Wild with Girls Inc. week will be held Aug. 19-23. Program facilitator Kim Fenn said it teaches the girls that they can have fun while learning. The themes for this year's programs are 'Blast Off with Girls Inc.,' which will explore outer space and aviation, and during 'Go Wild with Girls Inc.,' participants will learn about local wildlife and the ecosystem. The Girls Inc. network is designed to support, mentor, and educate girls in an affirming and inclusive pro-girl environment. Program facilitators are proactive with the girls in making sure that they know they have rights. While they play lots of games and have fun during the program, they also discuss more seri-

ous things like consent, unrealistic media perceptions of women, and even learn self-defense. Fenn said the program also explores healthy stress relievers and how to combat stress in safe ways that prevent violence, such as with yoga and other types of exercise. Girls Inc. serves more than 400 cities across the United States and Canada, providing the tools necessary for participants to navigate gender roles and social and economic barriers. The first time I encountered a washroom attendant was in Belgium in the 1990s. I'm referring to someone who monitors and cleans public conveniences while they are in use. On this occasion our tour bus had stopped at roadside services just across the border from France. Like most passengers on a lengthy road trip my first target was the toilets. The attendant in the men's room was female

which was somewhat startling. But she was working too hard to pay attention to the flood - pardon the pun - of customers moving in and out of the place. I had to pay the equivalent of 20 British pence for the privilege which, at the time was also a rarity in my personal experience. So yes "20 p for a pee!" Although in Europe paying to use restrooms is commonplace. There is payback for such an experience though. A quick glance around the facility showed that it was very clean. Nearly spotless in fact! Since that pit stop, 25 years ago, I have found

myself comparing all public washrooms ("toilets" to the British) to that incredibly clean, well-managed place in southern Belgium. I'm sorry to say that very few come even close to that level of excellence, especially in this country. Washroom attendants are now commonplace. One of our community's big box stores employs restroom staff and, in comparison to most places, that puts them well ahead of the pack. That store's toilets are almost always in good condition. My only experience is with men's rooms of course, something I'm sure you'll be glad to read. I depend on my wife, other female family members and friends for intelligence on the condition of ladies' rooms.

Based on my conversations - yes, when you are travelling this is sometimes a topic of discussion - ladies' washrooms almost always come out ahead. Well, in many instances they do! I think that says something rather unflattering about my own sex. After all why do attendants have to be on hand in order to keeps public conveniences clean? A little "restroom etiquette" would go a long way. Things like flushing the toilet or, in the case of men, lifting the seat when required! The fact of the matter is that many men are evidently oblivious to the fact they are using facilities which others will be visiting following their departure. Sometimes the mess they leave behind is quite

extraordinary. Sometimes it's downright disgusting! No, it's not restroom attendants we need it is common sense on the part of what I trust is a minority of public washroom users. Surely those same people wouldn't leave their bathroom at home in such a state? If they do then there is no hope. My sense is that thoughtlessness is an issue here. That along with others who, in a rush (everyone today is in such a hurry), conveniently forget that the facility in question is being used by others. The truth is that this is everyone's concern. Because eventually you too will be faced with a similar situation. It's inevitable. Clearly not all public conveniences can be mon-

itored and cleaned regularly. Seasonal roadside facilities are particularly vulnerable to this unfortunate scenario. And not every restaurant, bar or other business which provides toilets for their customers can begin to match what larger corporations are able to manage in terms of monitoring and cleaning restrooms. The point I'm attempting to make this week is that there are standards to shoot for with respect to so many things in life.
