The North Grenville Photography Club officially opened its sophomore exhibit, 2 for 2, at the branch restaurant in Kemptville last Wednesday. The exhibit, featuring approximately 40 photographs taken by local artists, will be on display at the restaurant until April 3. President Heather Hughes founded the club two years ago with a fellow photography enthusiast because at the time there was no place for shutterbugs to get together outside of Ottawa. The first meeting drew 45 people, and numbers have held steady since. Today, the club includes a few seasoned professionals and many enthusiastic amateurs. The inaugural exhibit in September was a popular fixture at the branch, and Hughes is glad to have the chance to again share their work with the public. “It gives some validity to what you’re doing,” she said, proudly looking at the many diverse photographs lining the wall. “When other people look at (a photo) and say, ‘That’s really nice,’ (you think), maybe I’m not so bad after all.” Hughes and several other photographers sold a few of their works during their previous exhibit, though she modestly says, “I still don’t really call myself a photographer. I just love taking pictures.” Anda Rungis, one of the exhibit curators, likes taking photos of musicians and hanging the prints on what she calls the “groupie wall” in her house. “It’s the way I remember the concerts I’ve been to,” she explained. Rungis’ photo of Ottawa rocker Sue Foley in concert at the Municipal Centre is part of 2 for 2. She strikingly edited the picture to bring out Foley’s red guitar. The editing process “depends on emotion – what I want to convey,” Rungis mused. “I’m not a purist by any means. I’ll certainly edit things the way I want to. That’s the fun part.” Wednesday’s launch drew several dozen people, who chatted with the photographers about the techniques they used, and how they captured interesting perspectives. One eye-catching photo by Jancy Watkins, A Nose for Comfort, is an amusing closeup of a dog’s nose. The club participates in various workshops, tutorials and outings throughout the year. Members get a monthly assignment challenging them
