WINCANTON CELEBRATES CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT WIN

H

ope Construction Materials, an independent supplier of cement, aggregates and concrete, has awarded Wincanton a six-year contract renewal to remain its supplier of choice for the provision of bulk and bagged cement road logistics. Under the agreement, Wincanton will be responsible for delivering just short of a million tonnes per year with a national delivery profile of over 600 road journeys a week. The new contract involves the renewal of the existing bulk agreement, with the addition of warehouse and bagged cement transport services from Hope’s flagship Dagenham facility, due to open this summer. “We have worked with Hope for many years and have supported them on their outstanding growth journey in recent times,” said Wincanton MD, Chris Fenton. Hope’s chief operating officer, Mike Cowell, added: “With the imminent launch of our bagged product, Wincanton’s expertise will be even more important, helping us to get our products to market on time and in the most efficient way possible.” Wincanton’s construction team delivers 400,000 loads to construction and building sites across the UK every year, operating through a network of 45 depots to provide a nationwide service.

DRIVERS HIT WITH INFLATED ROAD REPAIRS

rivers, fleet operators and insurers are being urged to challenge the costs associated with road surface and street furniture repairs following a crash, spillage or fire. If a driver damages Crown property – for example, by striking a motorway barrier, hitting a traffic sign or damaging a road surface – the driver or their insurer will be presented with a bill, usually from a council, Highways England, Transport for London or one of their contractors. Rather than simply paying it, specialist firm Claims Management & Adjusting (CMA) said it is wise to scrutinise the invoice to check for costly errors. The firm has published three recent examples to illustrate potential savings that can be made because of incorrect invoicing: Case 1: When an operator was hit with a £46,000 claim for a barrier repair from Highways England, it was pointed out that the length had been conveyed as yards when it should have been feet. A fair adjustment was to reduce the original invoice by two thirds, saving the client around £30,000 – but, as the contractor was described as ‘problematic’, the entire claim was written off. Case 2: When an insurer was hit with a £56,000 claim for resurfacing a stretch of road in South East England, CMA used the Freedom of Information Act to demonstrate a larger contaminant spill in Scotland had been addressed for just £750. Case 3: When a driver was presented with a £4700 claim for a small paint spillage, it was discovered the contractor had attended within half an hour and washed the road surface within 16 minutes. A new settlement figure of £700 was then presented, representing an 85 per cent reduction on the original bill. “I do not make these comments lightly, but certain Highways England contractors seem

SWEDISH CONCEPT HGV CUTS FUEL USE BY 30%

olvo Trucks has unveiled a new concept vehicle which combines a highly refined aerodynamic design and lower kerb weight to reduce fuel consumption by over one third. With support from the Swedish Energy Agency, Volvo said its new Concept Truck is the result of a five-year research project aimed at creating more energy-efficient vehicles. “We continuously work on developing more energy-efficient vehicles,” said Claes Nilsson, president and CEO of Volvo Trucks. “This is a high-priority area both out of environmental concern and in order to reduce our customers’ costs. We’re proud to be able to drive this development. Our concept truck showcases the immense power of on-going technical advances.” One of the key factors behind the low fuel consumption is a 40 per cent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency that benefits both the tractor and trailer. “We’ve modified the entire combination and optimised it for improved aerodynamics as much

as possible,” said Volvo’s chief project manager, Åke Othzen. “For instance, we use cameras instead of rear-view mirrors, which cuts air resistance, so less energy is needed to propel the truck.” In addition to the aerodynamic improvements, the concept vehicle is fitted with newly developed tyres with lower rolling resistance. The trailer weighs two tonnes less than the reference trailer, which translates into either lower fuel consumption or the possibility of a higher payload. The project also includes an improved driveline. The combination was test driven on Swedish roads in autumn 2015, and has been in development since 2011 with the aim of improving the efficiency for long-haul truck transportation by 50 per cent. Since the concept vehicle is part of a research project, it will not be available on the market. However, some of its aerodynamic features have already been implemented on Volvo’s seriesproduced vehicles, and the manufacturer said more of its solutions may be fitted in the future.

VAN DER VLIST SHIFTS 198-TONNE LOAD IN AMSTERDAM CMA said highway repair bills are frequently over estimated to be acting in an informal environment,” said CMA MD and former police detective, Philip Swift. “The tail appears to be wagging the dog, particularly where contractors have agreements to retain claims under a certain threshold, commonly £10,000. “My experience of dealing with hundreds of these below-radar claims, which Highways England acknowledge it does not supervise, has caused me to question whether many of the costs being presented are accurate or appropriate. There is a shocking lack of transparency – contractors are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act – and we frequently see cases of serious overcharging. In a not insignificant number of cases, no payment is warranted at all. “We advise any drivers or businesses who think they might be a victim of this behaviour – particularly insurers and fleet operators – to get in touch.”

Last-minute hiccups didn’t prevent Van der Vlist from completing its mission

A

bnormal load specialist Van der Vlist has reported the successful move of a 198-tonne generator house from the Hemcentrale power station in Amsterdam to the city’s port using a modular trailer and heavy-haul MAN tractor unit. The firm said a period of extensive preparations consisting of route surveys and bridge calculations preceded the receipt of the required permit. One working day before the transport was due to be executed, it was advised the height of the generator house had been increased by 95 cm – which meant the height of the cargo was 3.80 m instead

Read the paper online at www.transportcafe.co.uk

of 2.85 m. As a result, a new route survey had to be completed that same evening to ensure the movement, with the increased driving height of 4.80 m, could be carried out. Height restrictions on the route meant the place of discharge had to be changed at short notice to enable the move to be carried out within the original planned time frame. Van der Vlist said the road authorities of Amsterdam and the RDW (government road transport agency) pushed a new permit through at very short notice, which ensured the movement could be completed safely.

Owen Morgan photographed this superb customised Scania outfit at Immingham Docks After being passed some information from friends on Facebook, I was lucky enough to catch this stunning truck on the way back to the ferry at Immingham after it had been over to the Full of the Pipe truck show in Ireland. It had travelled over all the way from Finland – now that’s commitment! It has been customised by Ristimaa Customs. I managed to get quite a few photos and a short video clip, which has been really popular – and it would be great if you could

use these in your paper. I have started up a page for my truck-spotting photos so drivers and enthusiasts can all find and view them easily. The link is www. facebook.com/truckinggoodphotos I’d like to thank Jamie Farthing, the escort van driver; and Kevin Mulqueen for the information and timings; and the driver Juha Ylhainen for taking the time to bring her over and to chat.

RIP RON NEWCOME (1959-2016) Truckstop News reader Ron Newcome was recently taken on his final journey to Easthampstead Park Crematorium on a 1950 Leyland Beaver. Ron had spent most of his working life in bulk haulage with BAM Nuttall, delivering to major engineering projects. He also spent five years with TJ Transport in Fareham serving building and waste industries, and the last 18 months with MH Haulage based at Henley. Martin Hyam had a chance meeting with Ron Newcome on the road, found that they lived close to one another and got on very well. Ron joined Martin’s company, MH Haulage, driving a Volvo artic tipper, moving mainly aggregates, and he loved the challenge of getting into very tight spots. He was away Monday to Friday, sometimes sleeping in his motor in the yard. Ron was old-school; he believed

Driver Ron Newcombe was taken on his final journey aboard a 1950s Leyland Beaver in doing things properly and he would help anyone he could. When cancer was diagnosed three years ago, he kept on working and he thought he could beat it. However, his last day at work was January 24, when he had to go to hospital because he was so ill. Martin never employed a new

full-time driver until Ron had passed away, because he was hopeful Ron could fight the cancer and get back to work. Ron is deeply missed by his partner Marion, his family and Martin Hyam.

My name is Otis Griffith and I am a self-taught artist and welder. Over the last two decades, I have created countless pieces – and my art has advanced and I am continuously creating bespoke one-off pieces. I am near to finishing my latest piece: a 6 ft long truck-based BBQ with a traditional grill and separate slow roaster compartment. I am wondering if it would be possible for you to feature it in your publication? I have attached an image of the BBQ, as it is very close to completion and its first fire up!

BOOK

This hour-long DVD gives viewers a glimpse of what heavy haulage was like in the days of yore. The subjects tackled include shifting stators, transformers and oversize tanks, and the quality of the archive footage is pretty good on the whole. It’s a bit rough-and-ready in places and the starchy voiceover can grate a bit, but overall this is a good watch.

Again following the exploits of Will Jaeger (aka, The Hunter) – introduced in Grylls’ prevous novel, Ghost Flight – this book is a globe-trotting tale of long-lost Nazi cargo, a missing family and illegal biological experiments – all thrown into the mix with a threat of a world-wide outbreak of a new supervirus. There’s plenty of survival tips woven into the story, as you may expect, and the action rips along at a great pace - though if we’re honest, the ending felt a bit disappointing. Still well worth a read, though.

ife-based general haulier Gordon Hunter Transport Ltd has selected a Renault Range T as the latest vehicle to join its fleet. The 26-tonne Range T430 6x2 rigid with sleeper cab was supplied by Renault Trucks Scotland and is fitted with a 31 ft fully galvanised curtainsided body by Lothian Vehicle bodybuilders. It also features a two-tonne Dhollandia Cantilever tail-lift which forms a complete rear closure on the vehicle, as well as internal load restraints and v-groove side rave. The new Range T, used for general haulage nationwide as well as palletised deliveries for shop re-fitters and wine and spirits distribution across central Scotland, has photographs of owner Gordon Hunter’s young daughters Cali and Ellie, who feature on all his trucks. “I’ve run Midlums in the past and had no

trouble at all,” said Gordon. I’ve also received first-class service from Renault Trucks Scotland, so moving to the new Euro 6 vehicles was a logical next step for me. “The new Range T has already done 14,500 km in four weeks including runs to Southampton, Swansea and Inverness, and the fuel consumption has been an impressive 12.5 mpg – which I expect will improve further as the engine runs in,” he added. “I’m just one of the boys and very hands on in the business. I can honestly say the new Range T goes like a dream and it’s attracting loads of attention from drivers on deliveries. Other hauliers are stopping me to ask about the truck and I often hear the words ‘nice wagon’. All I can say is wow, what a truck, it’s a real show-stopper and I absolutely love it,” Gordon concluded.

ech company 3M has revealed details of the first vehicle wrap to be completed in the UK using its latest non-PVC vinyl film: Envision Print Wrap Film SV480Cv3. 3M said it provided on-site support to the team at Positive Design – a Tamworth-based vehicle graphics, signage and digital printing specialist – to wrap a refuse truck with the material. A new Isuzu Forward F120.240 Euro 6, 12-tonne chassis belonging to local waste management and recycling business Wm. M Briers & Son (Tamworth) Ltd was used as the test vehicle, and the resulting wrap combines striking type and a vibrant, leafy graphical theme.

“As a signage company, we keep a close eye on new materials,” said James Nicholls of Positive Design. “We knew the latest Envision Print Wrap Film SV480Cv3 from 3M would be ideal for this and future projects with Briers and other environmentally-aware customers.” Non-PVC and phthalate-free, the new material is manufactured with no added chlorine or halogens and 58 per cent less solvents than conventional films, and is also recyclable. At the same time, 3M said printability, ease of application and durability are equal to or better than the current range, thereby ensuring no performance trade-offs in exchange for improved environmental performance.

ACCIDENT

SPOT

I

n the last issue Steven Hinchliffe looked at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News, whose accident resulted in a claim for personal injury compensation. Part 1 looked at the initial steps taken, the estimated value of the injury and impact of the Government’s proposed changes. You will remember that my client, Mr P B Hanson of Great Yarmouth suffered a whiplash injury when he was involved in a head on collision. An American serviceman had drifted across the road into the path of his vehicle, and a claim was therefore made against his car insurance policy. CASE STUDY - HEAD ON COLLISION - PART 2 The main purpose of this 2 part article is to highlight the injustice that will be suffered by everyone in England and Wales should the Government introduce further drastic changes to Personal Injury claims in 2017. As I write this at the end of May 2016, a poll commissioned from IPSOS Mori by the Legal Services Board and the Law Society

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers “THE OUTCOME FOR THE INJURED DRIVER AND THE FUTURE OF LOWER VALUE ACCIDENT CLAIMS”

has just reported that only 30% of people who have a legal problem seek legal advice and only half of them contact a solicitor, ie 15% of the population. The poll of 8,192 people also revealed that the most common reason for not speaking to a solicitor was the belief that to do so would be too expensive. From 2017 the Government proposes to completely ban all Personal Injury claims for soft tissue injuries (eg whiplash, torn muscles, sprains, etc) and remove the obligation for the guilty party to pay any of the injured person’s legal costs when the compensation recovered for any non-soft tissue injury is less than £5,000. This is likely to affect approximately 80% of all current Personal Injury claims. The question will then be whether innocent accident victims will bother to make a claim at all. Also at the end of May came another kick in the teeth when the Government declared that the report of the Insurance Fraud Taskforce is to be accepted in full and implemented. As its name suggests, the Taskforce was set up by the Government to look into current levels of insurance fraud and recommend ways to reduce it. You will not be surprised to hear that the report was written by the defendant insurance industry and none of the statistics they rely on are capable of being verified, suggesting they may have been plucked from thin air. Is the Government very gullible, or complicit in the removal of the legitimate rights of the population in favour of big business? Currently most people injured in an accident have 3 years to make a claim, but the report recommends the following:● Claims made within 6 months of the accident to proceed as they do now, otherwise to be dealt with under the Small Claims process, meaning the defendant pays no legal costs if the claim is successful. ● Reducing the legal costs recoverable from a losing defendant by 50% if a minor Personal Injury claim is not started within 6 months of the accident. ● Introducing set amounts of compensation for soft tissue injuries. The likely intention being at a lower level than the current system of calculating what an injury is worth.

Steven Hinchliffe ● Introducing a presumption that no injury was suffered if a claim is not made within a specified time following the accident, with that timescale yet to be determined. Therefore if you are hurt at work and decide not to make a claim for a year or so, it will be assumed that you are a fraudster. The prospect of Personal Injury lawyers being put out of business may not cause many to lose sleep, but if you have an accident and cannot find a qualified lawyer to help you, or cannot afford to use them, you will then be at the mercy of the other party’s insurers who are likely to defend the claim - leaving you with no justice and no compensation. I do not climb on my high horse very often, but I fear that fundamental rights will be lost. Turning back to Mr Hanson’s claim, I asked at the end of the first part of this article whether he would have a happy outcome and what the situation might be if his accident happened after 2017. I am pleased to report that he recovered £2,000 for his whiplash injury and just over £270 for financial losses (including lost wages). However, as indicated above I doubt he would be able to make a claim after 2017 due to the type and value of his injury. You do not have to be a professional driver to seek our help - anyone hurt in an accident (eg members of your family or friends) can contact us for advice. This week I received a query regarding daily rest, in particular regarding the rules relating to ferry journeys. In Regulations 561/2006, it states at Article 8 a driver shall take daily 5 - Hinchcliffes - TSN andSolicitors weekly rest- 371.indd periods.1 Within each period of 24 hours after the end of the previous daily rest period or weekly rest period, a driver shall have taken a new daily rest period. If the portion of the daily rest period which falls within that 24-hour period is at least nine hours, but less than 11 hours, then the daily rest period in question shall be regarded as a reduced daily rest period. A daily rest period may be extended to make a regular weekly rest period or a reduced weekly rest period. With regards to reduced daily rest, a driver may have at most three reduced daily rest periods between any two weekly rest periods. As a derogation in relation to multimanning, it states that within 30 hours of the end of a daily or weekly rest period, a driver engaged in multi-manning must have taken a new daily rest period of at least nine hours. For weekly rest, in any two consecutive weeks a driver shall take at least: two regular weekly rest periods, or one regular weekly rest period and one reduced weekly

rest period of at least 24 hours. However, the reduction shall be compensated by an equivalent period of rest taken en-bloc before the end of the third week following the week in question. A weekly rest period shall start no later than at the end of six 24-hour periods from the end of the previous weekly rest period. Any rest taken as compensation for a reduced weekly rest period shall be attached to another rest period of at least nine hours. Where a driver chooses to do this, daily rest periods and reduced weekly rest periods away from base may be taken in a vehicle, as long as it has suitable sleeping facilities for each driver and the vehicle is stationary. A weekly rest period that falls in two weeks may be counted in either week, but not in both. Regarding ferry or train journeys, Article 9 states that by way of derogation from Article 8, where a driver accompanies a vehicle which is transported by ferry or train, and takes a regular daily rest period, that period may be interrupted not more than twice by other activities not exceeding one hour in total. During that regular daily rest period, the driver shall have access to a bunk or couchette.

“CAVALIER APPROACH” TO DRIVER OFFENDING LEADS TO VEHICLE LICENCE REDUCTION

S

cotland’s traffic commissioner has marked her “severe displeasure” at the behaviour of a Glasgow-based fruit and veg wholesaler by restricting the company’s vehicle licence for four months. TR Caledonian Fresh Produce Ltd, based at Glasgow Fruit Market, has been limited to running three vehicles following a public inquiry in Edinburgh. Industry regulator Joan Aitken said she was “seriously unimpressed” by the company’s behaviour after it had previously been warned about driver offending in 2012. At the latest hearing, held in March this year, investigators from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) reported drivers working for the company had committed a number of offences, relating to the breaks and rest they are legally required to take. Subsequent investigations revealed that the company was not undertaking any analysis of infringements committed by drivers or keeping a record of any warnings that had been issued for offences. Aitken also heard that following a visit by DVSA, police stopped one of the firm’s vehicles in November 2015. A DVSA examiner identified the driver, the firm’s director Ramzan Hussain, had committed 12 offences, including for insufficient daily rest, exceeding 10 hours driving and failing to take a break. In evidence to the traffic commissioner,

Hussain said there had been difficulties with journeys to Heathrow to collect fruit and vegetables. Hussain added he would get held up by customers and sometimes had to wait many hours to load. He told the traffic commissioner the operator’s licence was very important to the business as they could not do anything without it. In a written decision issued after the hearing, Aitken concluded the licence should have given more priority by director Ramzan Hussain. “Given the operator’s licence is so very critical to this business, the husbanding of it should have received more care and attention from persons aware of operator licensing obligations, ie director Mr Hussain, the person most responsible for directing this. “What was happening was that the runs to Heathrow had become difficult to manage and Mr Hussain was managing them by interrupting rest. The impression I formed of Mr Hussain was he was not prepared to be constrained by the rules. “Compliance is an inconvenience for lots of operators and their drivers, but balanced against road deaths and injuries from driver fatigue, the balance favours the rules.” Aitken also suspended the professional driving licence of Ramzan Hussain for eight weeks. Another driver, Rabnawaz Hussain, had his professional driving licence entitlement suspended for four weeks.

With the September 2014 Driver CPC deadline fast approaching, this was a prize coveted by all who entered, not only saving them a great deal of money, but also ensuring

YOUNGSTERS TAKE THE WHEEL FOR EDUCATIONAL DRIVING EVENT Roadking has worked hard to deliver a top-class truck stop at J12 on the M6

O

ne year on and the newest truck stop in the UK has gone from strength to strength. Roadking Holyhead opened its doors in May 2015; the second instalment by Fred Done and his team was made after identifying that the transport industry was steering into lay-by living and fast food takeouts. Surely our kings and queens of the road deserve secure parking, a warm welcome and wholesome, home-cooked food with secure parking. Fred and the team believed they did, therefore Roadking was born! It began with Greasy Lil’s (now known as The Hollies) just off J12 on the M6. This is the oldest truck stop in the UK (and an institution) which has always welcomed anyone passing by. Main meals, snacks and the best breakfast in the country 24 hours a day! However, in the past you had to wear wellies to get from the carpark to the café, hoping that puddles didn’t breach your boots. Now in 2016, Roadking (Hollies) in Cannock has an extended truck park for 200+ vehicles, minus the rough ride. A pitstop without the potholes, allowing for a much smoother drive on concrete. Next, the café is due to be refurbished and extended – again, due to demand. The park refurbishment also accompanies the wide range of freshly cooked food by Kelly and her friendly staff. It also boasts highsecurity CCTV, free wifi, showers, an ATM, a laundrette and rooms to rent. Not forgetting Sky Sports and a friendly bar to relax in downstairs. This brings The Hollies back to its best ever form within the 21st century. It has always been congestedN in North Wales at Holyhead Port, which makes trips to and from Dublin, Ireland more difficult than they needed to be. Huge numbers of HGVs parking in residential areas, lay-bys and supermarket carparks was always going to cause a stir. This was not only for the town and locals, but also for the drivers and companies forced to run a business like a back-street vendor. There were no showers, no toilets, the cuisine was limited to the chippy or kebab shop – and that’s if it was open. This isn’t a way of life for the Kings and Queens of the road!

Roadking Holyhead is situated one mile from the port on J2 of A55. For local knowledge, this is 10 minutes’ walk to the shopping centre and five minutes to the leisure centre. It’s open 24/7. This brandnew, modern hub offers a welcome break to drivers who were once stuck in their cabs on a lay-by, avoiding a ticket for illegal parking. It offers a wide range of freshly cooked food at truck stop prices, 24 hours a day. Not forgetting a bar open to drivers who are parked up. It also offers a TV lounge, pool table and free wifi inside and outside for the 200+ space truck park. There is 24-hour secure parking, huge showers, a laundrette, a meeting room, an ATM, rooms to rent, and again, friendly staff to make sure your stay is as easy as possible. It’s the first truck stop in Wales to achieve the ‘Park Mark’ and ‘Safer Parking Scheme’ accreditation. Life now in this part of the country is happily organised, and not a chore. Now that the bar is raised for the quality of life of drivers and security for companies, Roadking hopes more – and especially, younger – drivers will be attracted to the industry. With the current short supply of drivers, there is a huge need to employ more. Once that happens, because we know it will, Roadking are looking to open more truck stops around the country in the very near future. All sites accept SNAP, most fuel cards, cash and credit card payment. Accounts can be opened depending on volume of business and certain conditions. Please contact Roadking directly with any queries.

Event enabled young people between 11 and 17 to try driving in a controlled environment

A

t the end of May, 68 11-17 year olds in Scotland got behind the wheel of a car well before reaching legal driving age thanks to an event sponsored by twice former British Touring Car champion John Cleland and hosted by IAM RoadSmart (formerly the Institute of Advanced Motorists). The Borders under-17 driving day allowed young people of just 11 years upwards to drive a car, off the main road, with expert tuition. The event was supported by more than 30 volunteer instructors from local emergency services, giving each participant five hours’ driving, one-to-one. Starting off with the basics of car control, the attendees developed their skills over the day, working up to braking and understanding safety systems, as well as a test of their handling ability, through a slow-speed slalom. Modern and future technology was also a theme on the day, with a demonstration of autonomous braking. The event was supported by Police Scotland, Scottish Fire Services, Scottish Ambulance Service, Scottish Borders Council, John Cleland and Henry Trotter of Charterhall Estate. Vehicles were supplied by Clelands Volvo, D.S.Dalgleish Citroen and Belmont Suzuki Selkirk. The event was attended by Calum Kerr MP (Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk), John Lamont MSP (Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire), Rachael Hamilton MSP (South Scotland) and Paul Wheelhouse, SNP Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy. Kate Thomson, Assistant Chief Constable, Local Policing East, was also there on the weekend. Sixteen-year-old Daniel Paterson said:

“I really enjoyed my driving experience. I feel I learnt a lot about vehicle control and handling and it was great to try out different make/models of cars, especially the Jaguar XE. I mean what 16-year-old ever gets the opportunity to say that! It was a great day and a relaxing atmosphere. When telling all my mates today they are all really interested in trying this for themselves.” John Cleland said: “This event was the first of its kind in Scotland and our aim is to make this the start of many that might help make our youngsters better drivers and cut down on road accident fatalities. “Our long-term aim would be to get this activity added to the education curriculum and train the youngsters in the enjoyment they can get from driving and cut down the dangers by making them more aware and alert behind the wheel.” IAM RoadSmart operations director, Pat Doughty, added: “Anyone who ever doubts the value of pre-licence driver education needs to see it in action. You cannot fail to be moved by the level of skill young people develop quickly when you do the right training. “As a charity whose mission is to make better drivers and riders, we are naturally particularly conscious of younger drivers. It’s no secret this group is overrepresented in the accident stats. We set up this event because we wanted to show future drivers how enjoyable driving can keep them safe on the roads. After just five hours, many of the participants were already showing brilliant driving ability and awareness. And most importantly, they had fun too.”

FL RIGIDS COOK UP A STORM ON KITCHEN DELIVERIES

W

aterline of Newport Pagnell has taken delivery of 15 Volvo FL 4x2 12-tonne rigids from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London, Milton Keynes. The vehicles are the company’s first Volvo trucks and are being used for the nationwide distribution of kitchen components, from worktops and units to appliances and even lighting. “Driver and road-user safety, environmental impact, fuel economy, driver comfort, reliability, usability and network support were all identified as prerequisites when it came to renewing what is essentially over one third of our entire 40-strong fleet of trucks and vans,” said group logistics manager, Matt Elborough. “In choosing the new trucks, we started with a blank sheet and looked at all the options. Through this exhaustive process it was the Volvo FL that stood out as the only truck that met all of the criteria we’d defined at the outset.” For overnight accommodation, the new trucks’ day cabs are fitted with Super Sky Cab conversions by Hatcher Components of Framlingham, Suffolk, and bodywork is in the form of ‘Cheetah’ fast back bodies from Cartwright Group of Altrincham for enhanced aerodynamic performance. “We take the environment extremely seriously,” said Matt. “Everything about these new trucks, from the fuel-saving curved roof through the six-speed overdrive I-Sync automated mechanical gearbox to the high torque at low revs 210 bhp engines is about efficiency and limiting our impact on the environment. “This attention to detail has already been borne out in fuel figures that show we’re

Waterline boss said new FLs have boosted driver morale returning over 16 mpg,” he added. “This has really impressed.” Running a low chassis frame height of 850 mm above ground and with two-bag rear air suspension, the new FLs have been specified with safety and comfort in mind. “The Hatcher conversion is the most comfortable for our drivers,” said Matt. “Air suspended and heated driver seats with additional lumbar support continue that comfort theme into the cab and our drivers appreciate it. I am positive this investment has boosted their morale.

”Driver safety is massively important to us, as is that of vulnerable road users,” he added. “To these ends, the new trucks are specified to FORS and CLOCS standards and include forward, rear and nearside facing cameras. Additionally, we have supplementary lights fitted in the steps on the driver’s side as well as additional lighting at the top of the box body to illuminate the loading area plus a Dhollandia tuck-away tail-lift. “Furthermore, the box has been specifically tailored to precisely meet our needs in respect of safe loading and fixing,” he concluded.

he Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet has unveiled a new exhibit for 2016: a 1941 Bedford OMD from resident family business, HJ Bennett, which will be on display at the entrance to the show. Peter Vail, general manager of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, said: “When HJ Bennett first approached us with the idea, we immediately saw the opportunity to enhance the visitor experience and work with a likeminded Island business that, like us, cares about the Island’s heritage.” The truck is in the well-known HJ Bennett Admiralty Grey livery and reflects the company’s original Bembridge 108 telephone number on the side. It was originally used by the RAF during WWII, and subsequently acquired by HJ Bennett. In 2012, the vehicle underwent restoration as part of the company’s heritage fleet. “We are really pleased to have been able to work with Peter and his team on this new exhibit to bring more of the Island’s proud transport heritage to Island residents and visitors to the Steam Railway,” said Nigel Bennett.

Driving impressions

The look of this truck alone tells you it’s something special. Volvo has given the FMX a non-aggressive appearance, yet it still looks like it means business. With a clever paint job that makes it look as though parts of the bodywork have already been spattered with mud, the front end has a tough-looking three-piece bumper, with a centre section covered in thick polypropylene which returns to its original shape if it gets bashed. A tough underbelly, including a 3 mm thick skid plate protecting

no driver could match, making steep hill climbing and descents on loose or other poor surfaces easier and safer. Here, we took the truck into the sand pit just to experience driving it in an offroad situation. Its mud-plugging ability and manoeuvrability shone through, while the turning circle for this 5100 mm wheelbase rigid was equally impressive. Pushing the big Volvo into a tight turn in the soft wet sand, the tyres dug in and prevented excessive slide and understeer. That manoeuvrability also comes into its own when you are negotiating urban streets, where many a demolition job will require trucks like this to enter city centres to take out the spoil for recycling to make way for new environmental developments. The FMX is gaining a reputation among operators for its robust build and you will see more of them in fleets now, although most of those will likely have the more standard sleeper or even day cab. Volvo continues to improve its fantastic I-Shift automated transmission so it is now

the sump, hoses and cooler ensures everything vulnerable is kept safe, even when reversing. The truck is fitted with Volvo’s well-proven I-Shift automated gearbox – one of the best transmissions in the business. Sealed against dust and muck ingress so they are now safe for use in challenging conditions, enhanced software designed for construction and offroad applications gives faster gear changes that make operating in more demanding conditions safer. We took the truck from Volvo’s headquarters on a run over a mixture of roads and surfaces both in and around Warwick and were lucky enough to be given permission to take it off-road in a privatelyowned sand pit before our return run. As you’d expect from a truck built for heavy-duty operations involving a lot of off-road driving, on standard road surfaces ride in the FMX is what is best described as ‘stiff’. The steel suspension is set to keep the wheels from whacking the insides of the wheel arches or the chassis from bottoming out over very rough terrain, but Volvo boasts an air-suspended seat that offers 20 cm fore and aft and 10 cm vertical adjustment, with a more comfortable cushion which, combined with the mechanical cab suspension, absorbs any jolts the driver might otherwise experience. The redesigned ‘smart’ steering wheel carries a number of controls, and these and thick spokes help the driver keep from wrapping his fingers around the steering wheel rim while driving off-road – a definite no-no should the steering wheel be suddenly jolted by the truck striking ruts, rocks or other obstructions that could cause hand/finger injuries. The 540 horses quickly take the truck up to the top legal road running speed and you can slot into traffic pretty nifty. The 12-speed I-Shift automated transmission undoubtedly adds to the slickness of this truck’s on-road agility, slipping through the gears like a hot knife through butter. The enhanced software package for construction and off-road applications enhances the truck’s agility when you take it off-road and into the mire. Once selected, gearshifts are made with a speed

ome construction chassis whether four-, six- or eight-wheeler can be something of a compromise. Generally, if a truck isn’t going to undertake any heavy-duty off-road work – hauling tarmac or running on general aggregates operations – they can be of a fairly standard specification, with a mid-power engine, basic day cab and a road-going chassis. But add a bit of drama to the mix – nights away, more trips off-road and in harsher conditions – and you’ll need to beef the specification up with strong steel springs, flitching to reduce any flexing of the chassis, a decent sleeper cab and you will also require some sort of extra assistance for the drivetrain should the going get rough, boggy, or slippery. Then there are the trucks built for the serious end of the market, where power and strength are king, and where the requirement is for specially-designed chassis built strong enough to take harsh a continuous punishment. This requires a heavy-duty body, purpose-built chassis and designed-in component protection. This Volvo FMX 540 bhp 8x4 rigid falls into the latter category. Introduced as an alternative to the more standard versions on offer from the FM stable designed for hauling sand, aggregates and construction materials, FMX was produced to satisfy the requirements of customers who liked the FM package, but wanted something with more strength which could handle working in ultra-tough conditions and be able to haul heavy loads over challenging terrain.

suitable for virtually any type of transport operation, from high street deliveries to heavy haulage. It has also developed it to cope with heavy-duty off-road work. The software reacts to differing terrain and driving situations incredibly quickly. There’s no doubt the Volvo FMX is one of the top off-road and heavy-duty tipper/ construction chassis available today.

Downton is celebrating after a string of recent contract wins

U

K logistics company CM Downton has secured a three-year contract extension with aluminium extrusion producer Sapa Profiles UK, worth around £4m a year. The renewal comes following a competitive tender process and sees Downton further extending its operation for Sapa to include new services. Downton will continue to run all of Sapa Profiles UK’s national distribution, delivering from four main sites – Cheltenham, Tibshelf, Redditch and Birtley – out to the company’s national customer base. Downton also runs a significant inter-site transfer operation and handles shunting at three of the main sites. Under the new contract, Downton will be increasing the operational support team, with seven members of staff now operating out of three of Sapa’s facilities, supporting the complex requirements of the client and their national customer base. “Sapa Profiles UK has been a key Downton client for over six years,” said managing director, Andy Downton. “It is a successful

partnership that has strengthened with every passing year. We are extremely pleased to be continuing and extending the contract, and look forward to working with Sapa for many years to come.” Yann Beck, managing director of Sapa Profiles UK Ltd, added: “In an environment of constant challenging needs, it is imperative Sapa’s transport partner be flexible and proactive, with on-time delivery and customer service remaining at the forefront of our core business. “The Downton team has continually delivered an exceptional service where they are often the face of our business when the customer is in receipt of goods. The dynamic relationship and shared business knowledge gives us the confidence our logistics operation is in the right hands.” Downton also recently secured a new contract with the packaging division of global paper and packaging company Saica, which followed three contract renewals in February 2016 with Holmen Paper, Norske Skog and RPC Promens – worth around £3.5m a year.

he European Pallet Association (EPAL) has said it has made a “major breakthrough” in its battle against counterfeiters of EPAL Euro pallets. EPAL representation in Ukraine and independent inspection company Bureau Veritas have been working together to identify a producer of illegal pallets. In a joint campaign with the local police force, Bureau Veritas and Ukrainian lawyers, EPAL said it has located and seized large quantities of counterfeit pallets, as well as counterfeit branding plates, and is prosecuting the counterfeiter for the commercial infringement of trademark laws. If goods are exported into the EU from Ukraine on counterfeit EPAL pallets, customs authorities can hold the complete load for up to 10 days. If it is confirmed the suspect pallets are counterfeits, the entire load must be repalletted at the expense of the haulier or exporter. There is also the risk the delay in delivery could incur contractual penalties or the delivery being rejected. Counterfeit pallets are destroyed on behalf of the customs authorities. This also applies if the counterfeit pallets have been bought in Ukraine and shipped abroad. In such cases, there is the risk of losing the entire value of the goods. “The use of illegally produced pallets for transportation and storage facilities conceals considerable risks for logistics and retail companies,” said EPAL CEO, Martin Leibrandt. “Investigation of the counterfeit pallets has revealed the overwhelming majority are produced from low-grade materials and undersized boards. Counterfeit pallets therefore do not have the stability and safe working load of original EPAL Euro pallets. “The use of counterfeit pallets can lead to extensive disruptions to transportation and warehouse logistics, which can create additional costs and claims for compensation,” he concluded.

Going third-party

Q

I have a crane fitted on my flatbed vehicle and a customer of mine has told me it should be inspected every year and given a certificate. Is this correct?

READ BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner has delivered a taut, twisting debut thriller with this promising book featuring ex-SBS commando Luke Carlton. When a British intelligence officer is murdered in the Columbian jungle, Carlton is drawn into a terrifying international plot that sees London in the crosshairs of a deadly terrorist threat. Crisis By Frank Gardner Publisher: Bantam Press £6.49 (Amazon, hardback)

While it may or may not be a legal requirement, from a point of view of defending a claim being made against you following the crane’s failure, it is essential you do have up-to-date certificates. Your insurers will be able to arrange the annual inspections for which they will use a suitably approved engineering inspection company. Alternatively, you can use a local company as long as they are qualified and approved to do so. The costs of these inspections are relatively inexpensive, however failure to have up-to-date certificates could invalidate your liability insurance and even lead to you being sued personally.

Motor trader

Q

I have several cars and vans and regularly buy and sell at auctions. Can you tell me how I would qualify to be able to have a motor trader’s policy?

The main insurance companies would only offer you a motor trader’s policy if your business is actually buying and selling and/or repairing vehicles, so if this is just a hobby, so to speak, then that would not qualify. However, there are one or two insurance companies who will offer motor trade insurance to “part-time traders”, so it is really a case of searching the

Q

As my tractor unit is now worth only perhaps £5000 or £6000, I am thinking of reducing the insurance from comprehensive to third-party, fire and theft. Will this make a huge saving? I am currently paying £3500 for comprehensive cover.

A

Different insurance companies will have different percentages, but as a very rough idea the difference in cover may reduce your premium by about £500. This is because the majority of any motor insurance risk is that of third-party cover; a small part is then for the fire and theft, sections with a similar part for the accidental damage (ie, if you need to claim against your own policy for damage you have caused to your own vehicle). Even though the saving is only a few hundred pounds, it may still be worth considering as if there is a policy excess of another £500, it would not be worthwhile claiming when you would also lose no-claims bonus. However, a very important consideration is that of the trailers you may pull, as these would then also fall under whatever cover you have on the unit itself. Therefore, if you will be pulling customers’ trailers, they then will most probably insist on these being covered under a comprehensive policy.

The EZ-Cast streaming dongle from Kuma allows you to easily stream any content from your phone, tablet or laptop straight to your in-cab TV via HDMI. The EZCast will work in Mirror Mode, meaning the screen of your phone or tablet can be replicated exactly on your TV; or in Casting Mode, where you can send content directly to the TV from your device. Bluetooth keyboards can also be used to make operation easier.

Mini Coffee Press Manufacturer: Aozora Web: www.firebox.com Price: £12.99

Yeah, we know - another day, another new coffee-making widget. We had to include this one though, as it’s able to squeeze a particularly decent java hit into a cup of hot water with an absolute minimum of fuss. All you have to do is fill it with fresh coffee grounds, stick it in a cup of boiling water for a few minutes until it’s to your taste, then remove. It doesn’t require any filters or batteries, and it’s also super-easy to clean – always a bonus!
