ome of the best known trailer and tanker builders in the business were present at the show to display their latest innovations. Among the exhibitors were Cartwright Group, Doll Fahrzeugbau, Don-Bur, Feldbinder UK, Fuller Tankers, Kässbohrer, Maisonneuve, Magyar, Montracon, SDC Trailers, Tiger Trailers, Whale Tankers, reefer specialists Chereau and Gray & Adams. Making its CV Show debut was Kässbohrer, which has manufacturing facilities in Germany, Turkey and Russia and is looking to expand its presence in the UK after returning to the British market very recently. “The CV Show is the ideal place for us to learn more about the UK market and to meet our customers and our suppliers, as well as to develop new business relationships,” said Kässbohrer CEO, Iffet Turken. “It’s a very cost-effective way for us to meet a lot of people in the road haulage industry, many of whom may not have seen our products before.” UK-based manufacturer SDC exhibited its latest Aeroliner, along with other

high-volume trailers. Meanwhile, French refrigerated trailer builder Chereau had a busy stand in the show’s Cool Zone, following news that the Normandy-based company has recently merged with Spanish builder SOR to form a new reefer giant. “Our aim is to become the biggest reefer manufacturer on the market,” said Chereau’s Christophe Danton. The firm also showed off its new Smart Open-C trailer, on which the roller shutter opens on the outside of the container to enable it to be open and closed quickly. Finally, Chereau’s 100,000-Series specialedition trailer was the centrepiece of the company’s stand, with 50 units already destined for the UK market. On the tanker side, regular CV Show exhibitor G Magyar showed a range of tankers, semi-trailers and swap tanks suitable for all purposes, from chemicals and petroleum to liquids and foodstuffs. Whale Tankers stole lots of attention with its latest Terminator-themed 44-tonne KaiserWhale tanker, which sported eyecatching bright orange paintwork and

railer-makers Cartwright and Transdek UK took to the NEC to announce an exclusive licence agreement between the two firms for the development and volume production of fixed double-deck trailers. Cartwright will add Transdek’s fixed double-deck trailer products and features into its product range engineered and manufactured at the company’s 40-acre complex, while Transdek will continue to develop innovations and specialist fixed double-deck trailer prototypes under the partnership. Included in the agreement will be Transdek’s Urban and Wedge double-deck trailers, both of which provide up to 100 per cent extra load compared to conventional, single-deck equivalents. “This new venture is very exciting for both Cartwright and Transdek and creates a partnership which will

maximise the complementary skills of both organisations in terms of high quality, innovative design, value engineering and market leading customer service,” said Cartwright Group MD, Mark Cartwright. “We are a market leader in the production of moving double-deck trailers and like Cartwright, Transdek has a proven track record as an innovator. Between us, we have a better and more comprehensive understanding of the doubledeck trailer sector than anyone else in the industry.” Transdek UK MD, Mark Adams, added: “Cartwright is the ideal partner as they have one of the most efficient bodywork and trailer manufacturing plants in Europe, along with a rental fleet of over 5000 trailers. This capability will help drive forward the volume production of fixed deck double-deck trailers that incorporate our innovative design features.”

T

he Freight Transport Association (FTA) announced the release of its new Truck Excellence scheme at the CV Show. Devised as a voluntary, industry-governed scheme, it has been designed to raise standards and recognise excellence in the operation and management of large goods vehicles. Developed and governed by FTA members, the Association said Truck Excellence is the only national scheme that accredits operators against the operator licence undertakings. Each standard maps entirely to obligations under the operator licensing regime and associated core legislation, which it said is what both regulators and industry agree is the desired standard for excellence. Core areas covered by the scheme include operator licensing, transport management, operating centres and vehicles, maintenance systems, driver’s hours, working time and records and good repute. In addition to the integrity of the

FTA launched its Truck Excellence scheme and unveiled the results of its latest Logistics Report standards, the auditing approach is designed to ensure approved operators have demonstrated they have systems in place to continue to be compliant beyond just the day of the audit. The audit uses

the ‘Plan, Do, Check, Act’ approach recommended by the HSE and Institute of Directors, looking at the role of the licenceholder as well as the transport manager. Because of this, an accredited operator

is in a position to demonstrate the steps they have taken to manage their risk and obligations under their operator’s licence should one of their vehicles be involved in an incident. Truck Excellence is open to FTA members and non-members, although FTA pointed out that membership “will make compliance easier to achieve”. The Association also used the show to launch its Logistics Report 2016, which outlines the fundamental changes in the way we shop and the impact they have on goods being delivered. The report showed Britain’s stronger economy is leading to increased demand for logistics, with online shopping having grown “phenomenally” in 2015, with an average weekly spend of around £816 million – an increase of 12.4 per cent since 2014, and double the amount spent in 2010. A key source of data for the Report was the Logistics Industry Survey 2015/16, responses to which said investment in road improvements, recognising the vital role of logistics in the economy and cutting fuel duty should be the top three actions for government.

argotec brand HIAB showcased its ‘BIG 5’ loader cranes at the show, alongside the introduction of its renewed HIAB T-series lightweight loader cranes ranging from 1.2 to 3.5 tonne/m lift capacity with hybrid technology. LOGLIFT and JONSERED forestry and recycling cranes were also on hand to celebrate their 50th and 55th anniversary in the market. The firm also launched a new JONSERED1200RS recycling crane with maximum capacity of 11.3 tonnes/m. The new construction crane is meant for collecting and removing residue material from digging applications, and also for transport and delivery of filling material such as sand and gravel. Another new arrival was the DEL full-closure tail-lift incorporating a rear frame, top door and tail lift in one. In addition, MULTILIFT XR24S hooklift and MOFFETT M5 compact truck-mounted forklift with 2500 kg lift capacity were also drawing attention on the stand. he Road Haulage Association (RHA) took to the show floor to launch National Lorry Week 2016, which will run from September 19-24. “The theme of this year’s event is the ‘The Next Generation’ and is designed to raise awareness of the vital role played by

this industry in everyday life,” said RHA national chairman, Jim French. “We want to improve the reputation of road haulage and logistics operators in the UK and we want to involve as many RHA members as possible. By working together we can improve the reputation of the industry and

by doing so, attract the front line logistics workforce of the future.” French said that following on from the 2015 event, the RHA will support members who want to run their own events at their own locations with event resources and promotional activity,

through local press and media. He said planning was already “well underway” for a vast range of National Lorry Week activities. These include two major ‘industry days’ – one in Scotland and one in England.

nless provided by the State or some other benefactor, everything we acquire and every service we use costs us money. However, until March 2013 this was not quite the position with most Personal Injury claims, as up to then anyone injured in an accident that was someone else’s fault could be assured that if their claim succeeded they would keep 100% of their compensation, as their solicitors’ costs in making the claim would be paid by their opponent (usually the opponent’s insurers). If the claim was lost they would have legal expenses insurance that would pay the expenses incurred by their solicitors during the case and also cover any liability to pay their opponent’s legal costs. Fuelled by the insurance industry lobbying, Government changes came into effect in April 2013 and transformed the landscape dramatically. Successful claimants could no longer recover all their legal costs from their opponent and instead became liable to pay their solicitors a proportion of their compensation towards these costs. Fortunately, legal expenses insurance remained available to meet costs liabilities in failed cases.

ADVERTORIAL

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers

“SOLICITORS’ COSTS IN PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU”

“Solicitors make a lot of money - why can’t they absorb the shortfall in costs so the injured person can still have 100% of their compensation?” Attractive as this argument may be, it is a fact of life that firms of solicitors are businesses and without sufficient income to cover their overheads and liabilities they will go bust. In fact, over the last 3 years or so a significant number of firms (both large and small) have failed, usually because they had to borrow too much from their banks to keep going and then found they did not have sufficient income to pay their debts. They fell victim to the new era in Personal Injury claims, which requires firms to be leaner and more efficient, while still maintaining professional standards. “Why do solicitors complain that life is tough, when they now take part of their clients’ compensation to pay their charges?” Even though an injured person now pays part of their own legal costs this usually does not come close to making up the shortfall in the costs previously recoverable from their opponent. In April 2013 when the Government slashed the level of legal costs the guilty party has to pay, it also imposed limits on the amount solicitors can deduct from their clients’ compensation. The formula is complicated, but generally there is a deduction limit of 25% of the compensation, but this can vary depending on the differing contractual arrangements offered by each firm. Usually, solicitors can deduct up to 25% of a client’s compensation, but this must include VAT and therefore just under 21% of the compensation relates to the firm’s actual fees. In addition, some firms charge the cost of a legal expense insurance policy, together with any expenses the opponent has avoided paying (eg for medical records or search fees). Insurance companies set premiums according to risk, and for a legal expenses policy the premium is higher in contested cases where Court proceedings have been issued, and higher still where the level of compensation recovered is more than £25,000 and here a premium of £2,500 would be commonplace. At the other end of the scale, for a low value uncontested claim the premium can be as little as £35. For example, if your claim succeeds at trial and your compensation is £30,000 and you had instructed Firm A, they could charge 25% of your compensation, plus an insurance premium of £2,500 and an unrecovered

Steven Hinchliffe expense of say £350. This would total £10,350. However, if you had instructed Firm B, who agreed at the outset to cap all deductions at 25% of your compensation (including the insurance premium and unrecovered expenses), they would only charge you £7,500. The difference between what the 2 firms would deduct would therefore be £2,850. This shows how important it is for you to double check what your total costs exposure might be before you chose which firm of solicitors to instruct to handle your accident claim. There are other limitations on what solicitors can apply the 25% deduction to. Firstly, they must have done enough work to justify the deduction as the 25% is not a commission. Also, if the claim includes compensation for future losses (eg lost income if the client can no longer work) these must be excluded from the calculation. Generally, if the compensation is a few £1,000 in most cases the full 25% deduction will be justified, but if it is around £50,000 or more and the work done by the solicitors was fairly modest, the injured person can expect a much lower percentage to be deducted. Legal costs is a complicated issue. Do not be afraid to ask your solicitors exactly what their arrangements are as once you have signed their contractual papers it will be too late to change your mind. You do not have to be a professional driver to seek our help - anyone hurt in an accident (eg members of your family or friends) can contact us for advice. Following a recent article, I have had a number of calls and emails asking for more information. The article in question related to travelling time, and whether travelling to a vehicle which is in-scope of the tachograph 2. Accident Spot Feature in Truckstop News - Issue 368.indd 1 regulations needs to be recorded.

Article 9 of Regulation 5612/2006 says the following: ‘Any time spent travelling to a location to take charge of a vehicle falling within the scope of this Regulation, or to return from that location, when the vehicle is neither at the driver’s home nor at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, shall not be counted as a rest or break unless the driver is on a ferry or train and has access to a bunk or couchette.’ It goes on to say: ‘Any time spent by a driver driving a vehicle which falls outside the scope of this Regulation to or from a vehicle which falls within the scope of this regulation, which is not at the driver’s home or at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, shall count as other work.’ So the default position in the legislation is that the travelling time to an in-scope vehicle should not be counted as rest or break unless the vehicle is at the driver’s home or at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, or unless the driver is

on a ferry or train and has access to a bunk or couchette. In situations where the driver is driving a vehicle which is out of scope of the regulations to, or from, a vehicle which is in scope of the regulations, it shall count as other work unless driver’s home or at the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based. The European Commission’s Guidance Note goes into this in more detail. It states a driver travelling to a specific place, other than the employer’s operating centre, indicated to them by the employer in order to take over and drive a ‘tachograph vehicle’ is satisfying an obligation towards their employer and, therefore, does not freely dispose of their time. So, in accordance with Articles 9(2) and 9(3): any time spent by a driver travelling to or from a location, which is not the driver’s home or the employer’s operational centre and where the driver is supposed to take over or to leave a vehicle in the scope of the Regulation, regardless of whether the employer gave instructions as to when and how to travel, or whether that choice was left to the driver, should be recorded as either ‘availability’ or ‘other work’ depending on the Member State’s national legislation; and any time spent by a driver driving a vehicle which is out of scope of the Regulation, to or from a location which is not the driver’s home or the employer’s operational centre and where a driver is supposed to take over or to leave a vehicle which falls within the scope of the Regulation, should be recorded

as ‘other work’.’ In the following three cases, the time spent travelling can be regarded as ‘rest’ or ‘break’. The first case is when a driver accompanies a vehicle 04/05/2016 which is transported by ferry boat or train. In this case, the driver may take his/her rest or break provided he/she has an access to a couchette or a bunk (Art. 9.1). The second case is when a driver is not accompanying a vehicle, but is travelling by train or ferry to or from a place where he/she will take charge or has relinquished control of a vehicle within the scope of the Regulation (Art. 9.2) provided he/she has an access to a couchette or bunk on that ferry or train. The third case is where a vehicle is manned by more than one driver. When a second crew member is available for driving when necessary, is sitting next to the driver of the vehicle and is not actively involved in assisting the driver driving the vehicle, a period of 45 minutes of that crew member’s ‘period of availability’ can be regarded as ‘break’. There is no differentiation as to the character of the employment contract of the driver. Thus, these rules apply to both permanent drivers and drivers employed by a temporary employment undertaking hiring out of labour. For a ‘temporary driver’, the ‘employer’s operational centre’ means an operational centre of an undertaking using the services of that driver for its road transport (‘user undertaking’), and not the head office of the ‘temporary employment undertaking’.

Letter LIFE ON THE ROAD I felt compelled to write this poem and my husband said I should send it to you for your readers’ letters page. I hope you find it fun!

Louise Gray C J Gray Plant Hire Ltd

A TRUCKER’S LIFE

My husband’s up early with things on his mind, Must check those tyres and light boards behind. The things he must do to comply all the time, With safety rules and audits, it’s a mountain to climb. I follow behind, to witness one day, The things that the other car drivers say. “You are going too fast.” “You are going too slow.” “I’m on my way to work, you know.” “Get out of my way, let me pass, I have a Mercedes S-Class!” “You’re not passing me,” says the pushbike rider, “I own this road too, so move out wider.” Look out! Look out! The boy racer’s about, Now there is trouble as he weaves in and out. We reach the village to everyone’s distaste,

“Don’t come through here, you’ll make us late!” “Move over,” you say, “Get OUT of my way.” “No I won’t cut my hedges, the council should pay.” The wing mirrors cost 400 each, But will you cut your overgrown beech? There is no crime in Amazon Prime, We all want our goods on time, But use a large lorry to cut your costs? “Yes,” you say “and you must work at a loss.“ “Get out of my way, For I’m going to aunt Flo’s, Get out of my way, TRUCK – you get up my nose.” I watch my husband navigate the bend, With his 18-metre trailer, it’s tight end to end. He’s got a lot on his mind, but he’s not blind, He sees you tutting, your windows unwind. “Move over,” you say, “Get out of my way My daughter’s got a ballet class, How dare you cause delay?!” I’m not joking, now she’s poking fingers in the air, As if my husband really doesn’t, ever, have a care! Be kind, I think, Don’t cause a stink, I see your indignation,

MY PRECIOUS!

But if you looked beyond your needs, You’d see his indication. The blinkers are saying: be aware, I need to go just over there. But for all his size, there’s no compromise – All you do is stare. Now we’re travelling through the village, You would think it was rape and pillage, The looks he got Can’t be forgot; It’s a rather dismal image. The destination soon appears In the form of a hospital – old in years, My husband delivers the much-needed digger To make the West Ward even bigger. “Hooray!” says the customer. “Did you find us alright?” “Yes,” says my husband, “but I had a hefty fight.” “Sorry,” says the customer, “But the bypass was rejected.” “By who?” says my husband. “By those that were elected.” I follow him home; I don’t know what to make of it. The people think he drives for the sake of it. The road is for everyone, not just for you. The world is getting busier – what can we do?

I took this photograph of a Lord of the Rings Scania in Newton Abbot. I hope you like it!

Quentin Tarantino’s latest Western is a bit like Marmite – and whether you’ll like it or not depends largely on your capacity to indulge the director’s penchant for extended scenes of dialogue. It’s a good story, chock-full of fine performances and it looks stunning, but it’s lacking the drive of Tarantino’s previous – and in our book, more accomplished – Django Unchained. Rating: 

This new thriller written by road transport journalist Peter Rowlands weaves an intricate plot around a world instantly recognisable for those in the haulage industry. The story concerns disillusioned transport journalist Mike Stanhope, who manages to get mixed up in a fast-moving mystery when he selfpublishes a novel based on a true story – and someone begins to hunt him as a result. As the repercussions mount and the stakes get higher, Mike is forced to unravel a series of events that will test him to the limits. An engrossing, thoroughly enjoyable read that is all the better for having an ‘everyman’ hero at its centre.

KEEP THE SMALL CLAIMS TRACK LIMIT FOR PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS AT £1,000, SAYS SOLICITOR STEVEN HINCHLIFFE

T

he Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, announced in the Autumn Statement that the Small Claims limit for Personal Injury claims will be increased from £1,000 to £5,000, likely sometime next year. If this comes into effect it will in practice mean that insurance companies will avoid paying compensation for injuries suffered by hundreds of thousands of people every year. Following heavy lobbying from the insurance industry, the Government says it is concerned about the number of whiplash claims from road accidents and the impact on car insurance premiums. However, the plan is for the new limit to apply to all accidents, including accidents at work. A petition has been started to keep the limit at £1,000 and once there are 100,000 signatures the issue will be considered for

oad transport specialist Pentalver reckons it is saving more than £50,000 a year by using telematics to improve driver behaviour across its 107-strong Cannock truck fleet. Following the introduction of a performance improvement programme underpinned by TomTom’s WEBFLEET, a software-as-a-service solution for businesses to increase fleet efficiency, the company said it has seen fuel efficiency rise from an average of 8.5 mpg to 9.6 mpg per vehicle. OptiDrive 360, a key component of WEBFLEET, scores drivers on a range of performance indicators from fuel consumption, speeding and idling to driving events, gear shifting and constant speed.

Pentalver has incentivised improvement with drivers receiving a quarterly bonus if they hit agreed performance targets. “WEBFLEET has given us the tools to introduce the bonus scheme and has empowered our drivers to optimise their mpg by giving them real-time feedback and advice,” said Nick Matthews, Pentalver general manager. “Idling time in particular has been cut dramatically since we introduced the initiative, and we have been able to offer driving training support for those employees that have most needed it.” Pentalver has also integrated WEBFLEET with container transport management system TOPS, enabling more accurate job planning, scheduling and customer service with full fleet and journey time visibility.

SCOTLAND’S TC DISQUALIFIES LIVINGSTON AND EDINBURGH SKIP OPERATORS

T

he owners of two skip firms have been disqualified from running vehicles for five and three years respectively by Joan Aitken, Scotland’s traffic commissioner. Kevin Thomson, of Cedric Rise, Dedridge, Livingston, and Darren Whytock, of Gogarloch Skye, Edinburgh, are both banned from operating heavy goods vehicles as a result of the Commissioner’s orders. Mr Thomson, who traded as Capital Skips, will be prevented from holding or obtaining an operating licence for five years. Mr Whytock, who also traded as Capital Skips, is disqualified for three years. The operating licences held by both individuals were also revoked by the traffic commissioner. In a written decision issued after a public inquiry in April, the industry regulator said neither of the licences could survive after adverse reports from government inspectors, including the issue of a safety critical prohibition for a vehicle defect (loose wheel nuts) and the lending of a licence disc to an illegal operator. She added: “There is a history of non

compliance by Mr Thomson going back to 2013 when he did not have the financial resources for a restricted licence, such resources being required to secure proper maintenance of the vehicles. He went into partnership with Darren Whytock but did not advise my office of this material change. He was instrumental in another company operating a goods vehicle under the Whytock licence. He affected to have years of experience and used that allure to mislead others who would otherwise have sought proper advice and guidance.” On Mr Whytock’s conduct, the traffic commissioner said he had not looked after his operator’s licence. “He was out of his depth. In so many ways Mr Whytock had ceded his operator licence responsibilities to Mr Thomson. Any holder of a licence has to take the licence undertakings seriously as they are there to protect road safety and the environment and for fair competition. He has imperilled all of these by not looking after the licence as his own. ‘I cannot excuse him. However, this was his first encounter with the Public Inquiry proceedings and thus I will limit the disqualification in this case to three years.”

JACOBS REVEALS “REVOLUTIONARY” NEW BRAKING SYSTEM

H

eavy-duty diesel engine retarding system and valve actuation mechanism manufacturer Jacobs Vehicle Systems has launched a new High Power Density (HPD) Engine Brake to vehicle and engine-makers in Europe. The production-ready Jacobs’ HPD Engine Brake is claimed to realise one-and-a-half times the braking performance of traditional compression release braking over the engine’s entire operating range and more than two times the braking performance at lower rpm (the same retardation at 1400 rpm as at 2100 rpm previously). It delivers 2000 Nm of retarding torque at 1300 rpm and beyond and 611 kW power at 2500 rpm in a 13-litre engine. This, said Jacobs, provides large engine displacement retarding power in small and medium displacement diesel and natural gas engines. While delivering increased braking performance, Jacobs said the HPD system is quiet in operation, being fully integrated into the customer engine’s overhead design. It can assist with exhaust aftertreatment thermal management by preventing the catalyst from cooling during descents. Jacobs’ HPD Engine Brake was developed in response to the drive by global

engine suppliers to provide higher levels of engine braking performance at lower engine speeds and improve thermal management to match industry trends such as down speeding and downsizing of engines, which are driven by the need for better fuel economy and lower total cost of ownership. Engine brake retarding performance is becoming increasingly important because key strategies for improving fuel efficiency are reducing the natural retarding of the vehicle caused by wind resistance, engine, drivetrain and rolling resistance from the tyres. Another effect of market demand for improved fuel economy is the conversion of some fleet vehicles to natural gas engines, whose smaller turbochargers and lower compression ratios can diminish brake retarding power by up to 25 per cent. HPD compensates for this loss so fleets can still haul standard load sizes safely. During a week-long test drive event at Millbrook Proving Grounds in Bedfordshire, Sergio Sgarbi, Jacobs Vehicle Systems, said: “The UK market is already switched on to the benefits of engine braking. Approximately 90 per cent of all heavyduty trucks in the UK use it, with Jacobs’

Jacobs held a demonstration at Millbrook as part of the European launch of its High Power Density (HPD) engine braking technology compression release engine braking having been adopted by Daimler, Renault, DAF, Deutz and Volvo. “Our High Power Density Engine Brake is a significant technological step forward that, because it uses standard, proven technology components, also offers a cost advantage,”

he added. “At a fraction of the price of hydraulic retarder devices, it delivers on average a return on investment of six months compared to an average two-and-a-half years for hydraulic retarder devices. It also provides €3500 lower total cost of ownership over comparable retarder devices.”

I-SHIFT CRAWLERS LAUNCHED INSTARMAC GRABS FIRST FOR HEAVY HAUL OPERATIONS MAN FOR BULK FLEET BOOST Volvo said new gearing will help with low-speed manoeuvres

S

pecialist cementitious and bitumenbased products manufacturer Instarmac has invested in a new MAN TGX in a move to expand its bulk deliveries capability. The Tamworth-based company has traditionally run MAN rigids, relying on rentals or contractors for some deliveries. But Andy Ryan, logistics manager at Instarmac, said the firm wanted to be able to deliver full trailerloads to its customers and get more pallets to clients in one go. “The decision was made to buy the MAN TGX quite simply because it offered the best value for money in terms of price,” Ryan said. “When we bought five new TGS last year, we had listened to the drivers and the MANs TGX was taken to enable firm to offer bulk deliveries of its construction products

V

olvo is now offering its I-Shift automated transmission with crawler gears for improved startability for trucks carrying heavy loads in demanding situations. The manufacturer said it can add up to two new crawler gears, which would enable a truck to ‘possibly’ move off from a standstill and transport a GCW of up to 325 tonnes. “I-Shift with crawler gears offers an entirely new scope for heavy trucks with automated transmission to regulate their speed when crawling slowly and reversing,” said Peter Hardin, product manager FM and FMX, Volvo Trucks. “The driver can haul a heavy load without worrying about getting into situations that may lead to costly downtime.” With the new crawler gears, the truck can drive at speeds as low as 0.5-2 kmh, which will be a boon during precision manoeuvres for heavy haulage and construction applications. “I-Shift with crawler gears makes it possible to start off from a standstill in extreme situations. Depending on the application, I-Shift is available with one or two forward crawler gears and with or without two reverse crawler gears. Reverse crawler gears make it possible to reverse extremely slowly – an advantage when reversing manoeuvres require immense precision.

were their first choice for cab size – and the feedback appears to be just as positive this time. “After just his first run out, the TGX driver told me it is the best tractor unit he has ever driven, and he is an experienced driver who has held his licence for a number of years,” he added. Instarmac offers six brands, UltratCrete, UltraScape, UltraTile, UltraFloor, Granfix and Wondertex – and the new TGX will be delivering throughout the UK. The company has taken the truck with an R&M contract though MAN Nuneaton, and the vehicle will be covering about 120 km per annum delivering throughout Scotland, England and Wales.

ongthorne of Hebden has taken delivery of three Volvo FH 6x2 tractor units and two FM 8x4 rigid trucks from Crossroads Truck and Bus, Birstall, West Yorkshire. The new trucks are already working on the aggregate and asphalt side of the family-owned business, which is also known for the transportation of livestock. “Our relationship with Volvo and the Crossroads dealership dates back to the 1960s when our father, Ken, took delivery of a Volvo F86,” said company manager, Mark Longthorne. “Whenever we buy new trucks, we always do so in conjunction with our drivers, as they’re the ones that will be in them each day. Volvo is always their first choice.” The three new Volvo FH tractor units were specified with the 13-litre D13K engine producing 540 bhp and up to 2600 Nm of torque. Longthorne also specified the I-Shift automated gearbox for better fuel economy. For improved off-road drivability, all three tractor units are equipped with enhanced I-Shift software. All three also feature low-maintenance Jost fifth wheels incorporating composite wear

pads, which eliminates the need for greasing. Along with the new FH tractor units, Longthorne has taken delivery of three 36 m³ capacity Wilcox plank-sided aggregate tipping trailers featuring PM Onboard weighing systems and equipped with Dawbarn Hydroclear, electro-hydraulically operated rollover sheeting systems. With the trucks, Mark specified the Volvo Drive Plus cab package, which incorporates leather steering wheel, leather upholstered armrest, electrically controlled air conditioning, electrically heated and operated main mirror and near-side and off-side wide-angle mirrors. He has also opted for the Volvo Living package with single bed. “While the three FH tractor units came with standard white cabs, the factory did paint the chassis for us in China red,” Mark said. “Ultimate Bodywork in Rotherham subsequently painted the cabs in our Aztec blue, and then Andy Scott and his son added our livery and stripes. We have also added Kelsa light bars.” The two FM 8x4 tippers are equipped with Day cabs and the enhanced I-Shift software as found on the FH tractor units. Powered

Q

We have a fork lift truck which we occasionally operate on a joint car park used by the other tenants on our industrial estate. If we caused damage to a parked car would that be covered under our public liability insurance ?

A

Your Public Liability will cover damage to third party property or vehicles when it is being operated however there would be a “grey area” when the fork lift is being driven in the car park area. It is essential therefore that you insure the truck for road traffic act cover and this you should be able to arrange through your current insurers. As a guide you should expect the road risk premium to be under £200 per annum if arranged a a stand alone policy.

Q

We have a fleet insurance policy which is due for renewal next month and we have asked some other brokers to quote to check that our premiums are the best available. Our current broker says we should not ask more than two other brokers as it will go against us somehow if we ask any more, is this right or are we just being told this to stop us finding the cheapest premium ?

A

It is entirely true that having anymore than three brokers marketing your policy at the same time can have the negative effect of an insurance company feeling it is a waste of their time quoting. I know this sounds unusual and it could be argued that if the insurance company quotes their best premium to each broker it would then just be case of you deciding which broker to use, however as I say I can assure you that your broker is giving you good advice. There are exceptions to this general rule such as if one of the brokers

Business spec’d three new Volvo FH tractor units and two FM rigids for it latest fleet additions by D13K 12.8-litre engines producing 460 bhp and up to 2300 Nm of torque, the Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) provides up to 375 kW of retardation. The bodies, one for aggregate and one insulated for the transportation of

asphalt, are by AJ Heyton. “Like all of our trucks, these latest additions to the fleet are equipped with Brigade camera systems providing all-round coverage,” Mark concluded.

CHIPPENHAM PIT STOP LAUNCHES TRUCKER STROKE CAMPAIGN

has its own specialist scheme which other brokers would not have access to. When I am asked to quote I would always prefer to be told by a client how many brokers they were approaching as this would mean that rather than cause problems for them, I would only approach exclusive schemes.

Q

I have been offered some work carrying plant and machinery and I will therefore be having a hi ab crane fitted onto one of my trailers. Will this affect my insurances ?

A

Firstly any change of the types of goods you carry must be disclosed to your liability, motor and transit insurers. As you are carrying general goods under RHA conditions at the moment your Transit policy will need to be increased to include All Risks cover so that the loading and unloading of the plant and machinery is covered. The Crane itself will need to be inspected by a qualified and approved Engineering Inspection Company and there may be increases in your liability insurance or motor policy dependent upon the individual insurance company and possibly the value of the crane and trailer.

Staff at the Chippenham Pit Stop are hoping the new campaign will help drivers lead healthier lifestyles

A

campaign to warn UK truckers their ‘on the road’ life-style makes them potential stroke victims has been launched by The Chippenham Pit Stop in Wiltshire. Around 100 lorry drivers a day from all over the country and Europe who pull in at the facility, located just off Junction 17 of the M4, are being handed a leaflet called Keeping the Road Ahead Clear. The Pit Stop crew said the initiative is to encourage truckers to avoid strokes by adopting more healthy lifestyles, and comes after the truck stop opened an outside gym to enable customers to keep fit during rest stops. Pit Stop health coordinator and former nurse, Lisa Hatherell, said spending long hours sitting behind a wheel all day and

every day was not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. “The risk of a stroke approximately doubles for each decade of life from aged 55, and the UK’s truckers are already an ageing generation because with all its disadvantages, most young people are not interested in being truckers any more,” she said. “Our leaflet provides tips on how to avoid becoming a stroke victim and is part of our on-going drive to offer customers the opportunity of living more healthy lifestyles,” she added. The Pit Stop was also seeking to provide truckers with more healthy eating options in its restaurant by using healthier cooking processes, she concluded.

APP PLEDGES TO PAY PARKING FINES FOR UK MOTORISTS

A

new app has launched with a promise to help Britain’s cashstrapped motorists pay their parking fines for free. The app, called Park My Fine, is the brainchild of a parking industry worker who believed there must be a way to help the nation’s drivers pay the £30 million worth of fines issued by councils every month for parking contraventions. Tim Bealey created the app, which he recently pitched to Virgin tycoon Richard Branson as part of the entrepreneur’s Voom (formerly Pitch To Rich) initiative. He said: “We’re really excited to launch Park My Fine. As an app that promises to pay parking fines for motorists, it’s a totally new concept, made possible by the power of advertising.

“Nobody likes getting a parking fine, but there approximately 12 million parking fines are issued in the UK every year, so this app could really make a difference to people’s lives.” Users downloading the app can watch adverts to increase their chance of having their fine paid. The more adverts each user watches, the better chance they have of winning a payment for their parking fine. Each advert watched acts like a credit, which goes into the daily draw. After they win, users have 24 hours to get in touch and have their fine paid for them. Those currently without a parking fine can still use the app to watch ads and collect credits then cash those in if they do get a parking fine further down the

road. “Advertisers benefit from a focused audience, allowing them to easily reach all sectors of the motoring public,” Bealey said. “The app covers an extensive demographic which enables us to target adverts for any product, using full-screen interactive video, native, interstitial and banner ads. It’s a real marriage of technology and advertising to bring a bit of cheer back to the motoring public.” Park My Fine is free to download for iPhone and Android devices.

S

pecialty bulk and packaged chemical distribution specialist Brenntag UK & Ireland has placed an order for 12 Globetrotter-cabbed Volvo FM-460 6x2 tractor units from Thomas Hardie Commercials, Middlewich. “Safety is our foundation principle,” said operators director, Fred Worle. “We are constantly considering ways how to contribute towards greater sustainability in all industries and applications we serve and striving to minimise the ecological impact of our business activities. “Logistics is a big part of what we do, so sustainability is a very important factor. Volvo’s core values in the areas of safety

and environmental care align with those of Brenntag UK & Ireland, which helped influence our purchase of these 12 tractor units.” Brenntag UK & Ireland operates a fleet of 100 trucks, of which approximately 50 per cent are Volvo. The new FMs provide traction for a variety of road barrels that carry bulk liquid chemicals for use in just about every market sector. They also service Brenntag UK & Ireland’s distribution sites, where the product is diluted, packed and distributed. Although they are mainly based at Brenntag operating centres in North West England, they have a UK nationwide operational brief, Worle said.

Occasional international work is also undertaken and each truck will cover in the region of 140,000 km each year. While a number of the vehicles are double-shifted, all work with a variety of road tanker trailers. The 3.9 m wheelbase, ADR-specification trucks were specified with the 13-litre DK13 engine rated at 460 bhp, I-Shift gearbox with Long Haul fuel and economy software, and Volvo Engine Brake +. They are also fitted with upgraded communications, a forward-facing and side-view camera system and additional driver comfort options. Maintenance is carried out overnight and at weekends by Thomas Hardie Commercials, Middlewich on a Volvo R&M contract.
