A&F HAULAGE HERALDS NEW VOLVO TIPPERS

A

&F Haulage of Bolton has taken delivery of 14 new FM and six FMX 8x4 tippers from Thomas Hardie Commercials in Manchester. The new arrivals increase the company’s fleet size to over 85 trucks. “Volvo represents good, strong and reliable trucks and with the B-Ride high suspension option offering excellent chassis ground clearance on both the FMX and the FM, these new trucks are ideally suited to the type of construction work with which we’re involved,” said managing director, Ali Majeed. All 20 of the new trucks are powered by 410 bhp 11-litre D11K engines. The vehicle’s I-Shift automated gearboxes are equipped with software to enhance off-road and construction capabilities. The new FMX eight-wheelers, which are fitted with Day cabs, feature Bulkrite insulated bodies with Edbro tipping gear

and Easysheet systems. Meanwhile, the 14 new sleeper-cabbed FMs are fitted with Wilcox Wilcolite bodies, Edbro tipping gear and Easysheets. “Our drivers are really happy with the new trucks,” Majeed said. “They have already commented on the enhanced comfort of the interiors and in relation specifically to the latest FMX trucks, they say the steering is now lighter and an improvement on earlier versions.” Approximately 75 per cent of business at A&F Haulage is the transportation of asphalt, with the remaining 25 per cent accountable to aggregate. “Last year we delivered some 4.1 million tonnes of asphalt for our three main customers,” Majeed explained. The new trucks are fitted with a five-way recording camera system covering front, rear, left and right, as well as one camera dedicated to an overview of the body.

ristol-based general haulier Saville’s Freight has added eight DAF XF 460 FTG tractors with Super Space Cabs and a 26-tonne CF 330 FAS with a Space Cab to its fleet of around 30 trucks. Now in its 31st year, the business began its life in warehousing and forwarding, but customer demands led it to begin running its own vehicles some 15 years ago. “We have been growing very steadily since starting to run our own trucks,” said director Darren Saville, who explained how the firm is now looking to rationalise its current fleet of four marques down to just two brands in the near future. “We have now dropped one manufacturer and refreshed the line-up with these new DAFs,” he said. “Right now, the feeling is we will try to rationalise further and finish the year with just two marques in the fleet.” Supplied through Imperial Commercials Western Region, the eight XFs are on threeyear Contract Hire packages through PACCAR Financial, with the CF rigid being acquired with a two-year R&M deal on outright purchase. The haulier had operated a couple of DAF tractor units “many moons ago”, as Darren Saville put it, but was tempted to look again at the brand following an abortive negotiation to take over the management of transport operations for an own-account operator running an all-DAF fleet.

“While we were not able to reach a positive conclusion on that opportunity,” said Saville, “the good thing that came out of it was our exposure to today’s DAF range and the meetings it required us to have with Imperial Commercials. They have been on top of every little detail for us since we expressed an interest in DAF in our own right, and came up with solutions to our used asset disposal that allowed us to focus on the new trucks we needed. “Price isn’t everything in a truck purchase of course, not by any means,” he added. “We also look very hard at things like reliability, fuel and driver acceptance.” Savilles Freights monitors fuel on the new DAFs through its own telematics system, as well as receiving weekly reports direct from the manufacturer. “It’s reassuring to see the two systems tally with fuel reports,” Saville continued. “These new trucks are already matching other Euro 6 vehicles in the fleet and have yet to get properly bedded in.” Saville said the new XFs also seem to be bringing new drivers to their firm. “We bought these to reward our current drivers for their loyalty and hard work. The fact others are seeing them and reacting is a bonus, and that’s without the very positive impact we know they have had already on customers and potential customers,” he concluded.

cottish demolition, asbestos removal and recycling specialist Central Demolition has taken delivery of its first Renault Range Cs. Its two 32-tonne Range C430 RKs with Weightlifter Muckaweigh hardox build tipping bodies have been fitted with Kelsa top and bottom light bars, comfort seats, comfort pack, vertical exhaust and have the Night & Day cab. Supplied by Renault Trucks Scotland, the tippers join Central Demolition’s 30-strong fleet on a four-year repair and maintenance deal following previously favourable experiences with Renault Landers. Servicing is through David Philp Commercials in Edinburgh. The tippers will be well travelled across Scotland and beyond delivering recycled aggregates, removing demolition rubble from sites and transporting back to the company’s Bonnybridge yard for crushing and then washing at the wash plant. All crushed

material is graded and sold on to a range of Central Demolition’s customers. “Over the past couple of years we have won several major contracts, invested significantly in all areas of our business and received widespread recognition for our efforts,” said owner, Ross Craig. “So when we needed additional new vehicles to keep up with the demand, I turned to the team at Renault Trucks Scotland. “We’ve previously used Renault Landers and have been extremely impressed by their robustness and overall performance, so the Range C was the natural progression for us. Access in and out of demolition and recycling sites can be tricky, so we needed tippers with exceptional mobility to give us easy access to all types of terrain. We’ve found the Range C to be well up to the challenge; it’s a well-constructed vehicle, very well accepted by our drivers and provides good value-formoney overall,” he added.

Moira Nicol, Dingwall

BEFORE A short time ago, we found a photograph of the articulated lorry my husband drove about 21 years ago. My grandson is mad on lorries, so he put the photo on Facebook as “My Grandad’s old lorry”. We were amazed at the response – and lo and behold, the firm that now owns the lorry – TS Transport – replied and sent a photo of it as it is now. The colour has changed from yellow to red, and it now has some beautiful horses

AFTER

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

I was going to bleat on about roping and sheeting, but after 22 years I am sick of the job. Why have factories stopped kids going with fathers in the lorries for years? Just why have we got that driver shortage again? Why are blokes bullied around just because big companies won’t invest in better up-to-date machinery? As a driver, why are there a million problems in front of you, and not one solution? Why, as a driver, when you need the most control to put your lorry where it has to be, are there speed humps everywhere? I could go on and on and on. I am just trying to find a path to some improvement somewhere. Somebody saying ‘yes we can’ rather than ‘no you are not allowed driver’. And with the fact that health and safety has almost closed this country down, is it not time to start shouting ‘enough is enough’? It’s just as easy to talk a job up as it is to talk it down. I called DAF the other day as a driver helping another driver that had run out of diesel. “Is there a quick way to bleed up an 07 DAF?” I asked. The answer came back: “Call DAFaid!” What is going on in the world of transport? It’s not one I remember. Simon Goodjohn By email

ACCIDENT

SPOT

I

n the last issue Steven Hinchliffe looked at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News, whose accident resulted in a claim for personal injury compensation. Part 1 looked at the initial steps taken. You will remember that my client, Mr P D Butler of Wednesbury was trying to release a shelf from inside his truck, which he did not know was spring loaded, when it trapped his hand causing a broken finger and crushed nail. A claim was made to the company he was working for (via an agency) and who had provided the vehicle, principally on the basis that he was not trained in its use and not alerted to the hazard the shelf might present. CASE STUDY - TRUCK DRIVER INJURED BY SPRING LOADED SHELF - PART 2 The letter of claim had been sent and we were waiting for a response from the company. In the meantime we obtained copies of Mr Butler’s medical records from his GP and the hospital where he was treated. This gave us a better understanding of the extent of the injury that

ADVERTORIAL

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers

“THE OUTCOME FOR THE INJURED DRIVER” he suffered. The next step was to instruct an independent medical expert to prepare a written report about the injury, and in this case the appropriate expert was a Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine. In our instructions to the expert we set out details of how the accident had happened, and requested that he review the GP and hospital records and illustrate in the report what Mr Butler’s preaccident health had been, the nature of the injury and a prognosis for full recovery. It is very important for a medical expert to be comprehensively instructed as we will base our valuation of the compensation appropriate for the injury upon their report. Once Mr Butler had been examined and we received the report, this indicated he had had a crush injury to his left index finger that caused a flake fracture to the tuft, and damage to the nail and pulp. The expert confirmed that after a couple of months the pain had subsided, except during cold weather, but there was still tenderness and numbness at the tip of the finger. His nail fell off 4 months after the accident, but then grew again. Overall, the expert anticipated that Mr Butler would be symptom free by 18 months from the accident date. During this time we also considered any financial losses that Mr Butler had suffered because of the accident, but they were nominal and amounted to only a few pounds for his travel expenses. However, this can be an important part of a claim as if the injuries prevent a client from working for several weeks, their loss of wages during this period can run into thousands of pounds. We had sent the letter of claim in mid-October 2013 and although the company’s insurers quickly acknowledged receipt, it was not until mid-February 2014 that they completed their investigation and confirmed responsibility for the accident was admitted. By early March Mr Butler had approved the medical report and details of his financial losses, and with his permission we sent copies to the insurers with proposals for settlement. After a little chasing from us, a couple of weeks later the insurers made an acceptable offer and the case settled. Mr Butler accepted £3,500 compensation for his injury, plus his financial losses of £6.30, making £3,506.30 in total.

Steven Hinchliffe The next step was to try and agree the legal costs with the insurers. We prepared a detailed schedule setting out all the work we had done and the expenses incurred in making the claim and sent this to the insurers. As often happens in Personal Injury cases, the insurers sent this schedule to a firm of costs negotiators, who promptly offered 50% of what had been claimed. In my experience costs negotiators frequently make a completely unreasonable first offer, perhaps in the hope the solicitors will settle cheaply for the sake of cash flow, but we always negotiate hard for a realistic amount. After a few weeks terms were agreed and the file could then be closed. I am indebted to Mr Butler for allowing me to report his case, and when asked to provide a quote about his experience of using my firm’s services he said:“Very pleased with the way Hinchliffes Solicitors dealt with my claim. Hinchliffes Solicitors handled everything from start to finish.” All of my Truckstop News articles appear on my firm’s website at www. hinchliffes.co.uk in the “Latest News” blog link on the homepage. This issue, we’re looking at goods vehicle operator licencing and what is known as the ‘small trailer exemption’. This is in response to a query from one of our readers, and in answering this I have quoted the DVSA publications which 12. Hinchcliffes - Truckstop news - 367 - 10th May - Half.indd 1 provide good guidance on operator licencing. For a motor vehicle with a drawbar trailer, you need a licence if: (where both the motor vehicle and the trailer are plated), the total of their gross plated weights is more than 3500 kg; or, in any other case, the total unladen weight is more than 1525 kg. However, if the use is for the carriage of your own goods and if your trailer is no more than 1020 kg unladen weight, you do not need to include its weight when adding up the total gross weight or unladen weights for drawbar outfits. This is an important exemption because it is an offence to operate a goods vehicle without a valid licence if one is required. It could result in prosecution and the vehicle could be impounded. You will need a goods vehicle operator’s licence if you use a goods vehicle of over 3.5 tonnes gross plated weight or (where there is no plated weight) an unladen weight of more than 1525 kg to transport goods for hire or reward or in connection with a trade or business. (In this instance, ‘goods’ means goods or burden of any description). For a vehicle and trailer combination, generally you will need a goods vehicle operator’s licence if the gross plated weights or unladen weights of the vehicle and trailer combined exceed the limits stated above for a single vehicle.

Exemptions from goods vehicle operator licencing include the small trailer exemption include, in these circumstances a trailer with an unladen weight of less than 1020 kg need not be taken into account in the weight calculation for a vehicle pulling a trailer. It therefore can be ignored for the purposes of adding up total gross weights or unladen weights to determine whether they are above the threshold for requiring an operator’s licence. However, this exemption does not apply if you are carrying other people’s goods for hire or reward (eg, working as a courier or freight transport business). In such circumstances, the weight calculation must include any trailer attached (irrespective of the trailer’s weight). In this case, if the vehicle and trailer combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes gross

plated weight or (where there is no plated weight) an unladen weight of more than 1525 kg, a standard licence is required. Unladen weight For the purposes of legislation relating 21/04/2016 to the use of vehicles and trailers on roads, the unladen weight shall be taken to be the weight of the vehicle or trailer: inclusive of the body and all parts (the heavier being taken where alternative bodies or parts are used) which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle or trailer when working on a road; but exclusive of the weight of water, fuel or accumulators used for the purpose of the supply of power for the propulsion of the vehicle or, as the case may be, of any vehicle by which the trailer is drawn, and of loose tools and loose equipment.

AUCTION-BOUGHT F86 FOUND TO BE 42-YEAR-OLD USED CLASSIC

Jon Burgess is particularly pleased with his latest internet auction win!

J

on Burgess, a Volvo Used Trucks customer of Stockton and supplier of new and used livestock transporters, based in Newton-on-Derwent in in the East Riding of Yorkshire, recently placed the winning bid on an internet auction site for a 1974 Volvo F86 three-axle rigid in original condition. On bringing the former JO Adams & Son Volvo F86 to Yorkshire from Daventry, Jon booked it in for an MoT at which the only fault found was a failed valve in the brake pedal assembly. “Fortunately, I managed to find a replacement part and, once fitted, I drove home with a valid certificate,” said Jon. The overall condition of the truck is both original and of a surprisingly high quality. “As it stands, the flatbed body was built by Barham Truck Bodies of Northamptonshire

and on this sits a potato bulker manufactured by Cranford Engineering of Knutsford, Cheshire,” explained Jon. “If you look under the conveyor, you can even see soil that’s been there for 25 years! “My plans are to take this wonderful truck on commercial rallies, as you cannot have something as magnificent as this truck without sharing your good fortune with other enthusiasts,” he added. Jon’s most recent acquisition was an FH13-500, although in the main his regular requirement is for six-wheel rigid trucks on which he then places livestock bodywork. “Volvo Used Trucks, like the F86, consistently show themselves to be reliable and parts are easy to get. Ultimately I would say a Volvo Used Truck is a great starting point for a sensible livestock wagon.”

Renaults will work on the firm’s paper and compost recycling service

F

ollowing an expansion in its business, Lincolnshire-based JL Priestley Bulk Services (JLP) has selected five new Renault trucks as the latest additions to its fleet. Three 44-tonne Range T460 6x2 tractor units and two 32-tonne Range C430 8x4s with high-roof sleeper cabs join the 10-strong line-up and are being used for the company’s paper and compost recycling services across Derbyshire and Yorkshire. Supplied by Renault Trucks dealer Thompson Commercials (Boston), the new trucks are on a four-year full R&M contract. The Range Cs were specially adapted to meet JLP’s requirements, fitted with an Aliweld

fixed high-side monocoque tipping body with hydraulic-operated tailboard, purposedesigned to match JLP’s recycling operations. “As we have been running Renault Premiums successfully for many years, taking the Range T was the next logical progression for our company,” said JLP’s transport manager, Paul Clark. “We found the Range C’s cab layout to be excellent and with all the strength and protection around it, coupled with the vehicle’s impressive payload of 19,860 kg, it’s an excellent choice for our operation. “Our drivers love them too and the icing on the cake is that we are getting an initial MPG increase of 0.4 per cent – and it’s still very early days,” he concluded.

Mechanic cover

Q

I am planning on setting up business as a mobile mechanic working on commercial vehicles at my customer’s premises. What type of insurance will I need if I am purely a sole trader?

A

You will need a Motor Trade insurance policy which will include the Public Liability cover, which is your first requirement. The policy can also include insuring your tools and equipment, but if you intend leaving such items in your own van overnight, please check the policy wording as some insurers exclude overnight or when a van is left unattended. If you will be driving any customers’ vehicle, say for testing purposes, you will need Road Risk cover included and for commercial vehicles, though this can be very expensive. Finally, a Motor Trade policy can include Defective Workmanship cover, which is essential in protecting yourself and indeed your customers. Fitting the wrong part or not tightening whee nuts can lead to a substantial claim, and I cannot overemphasise the importance of this cover. Motor Trade insurance is a very specialist area and in particular for a newstart business specialising in commercial vehicles, and I would strongly recommend you speak to a specialist broker. I should

Read the paper online at www.transportcafe.co.uk

be able to put you in touch with the right specialist; alternatively, try adverts within trade magazines or recommendations from fellow mobile mechanics.

Pension schemes

Q

I set up my own business last year and now employ two drivers and one part-time office worker, and they tell me I have to have a pension scheme by law. Is this correct, and if so, who do I contact to set it up?

A

Following relatively new legislation, every business in the UK has to provide a facility for its employees to contribute into a pension, and for existing businesses this is being phased in between 2014 to 2017. As you only set up your business last year, you will need to find out your specific company’s start date – you will receive a letter from the Inland Revenue and Customs giving you sufficient notice. You will then need to contact an independent financial advisor, who will set up your scheme normally for a one-off fee and then it is administered by whomever looks after your wages administration. The company I used myself was very good and, I thought, very reasonable, so if you would like a recommendation, please give me a call.

AN Truck & Bus UK has extended its sponsorship deal with darts champion James ‘The Machine’ Wade for a second year. Under the sponsorship extension, Wade will sport the MAN logo on his shirt at all major events across the world and will make personal appearances as an MAN ambassador on behalf of the company. In 2016, as well as major tournaments in the UK, he’ll play in Australia, Germany, China, the Netherlands, Dubai, New Zealand, Japan, Austria, Gibraltar and the Middle East. Wade has won eight major titles, making him one of the most successful players in the history of the Professional Darts Corporation. He has won the World Grand Prix and the UK Open twice and has also triumphed in the Premier League, World Matchplay, The Masters and the Championship League. “The increase of our brand awareness is a key focus for the UK business in 2016,” said MAN UK’s marketing chief, Ralf Schueler. “The signing of this latest sponsorship deal will help us gain greater brand presence within the truck driver market.” Wade added: “I started life as a mechanic, so having a brand like MAN on my shirt is the perfect partnership. The first year was great for me, so the second year is a real bonus. I’ve played well so far in 2016 so hopefully there will be lots of wins to come.”

When a hitman’s money goes missing in a seedy hotel in Stockholm, a string of mishaps unfolds that are in turns exciting, hilarious and zany - and guaranteed to raise many a chortle. AHERN MOVES AHEAD WITH ANTOS BIN TRUCK

Revised Range T sports a number of improvements

L

ess than three years after its launch, Renault Trucks has given its Range T a major upgrade which it said improves fuel efficiency. According to the French manufacturer, the new Range T has an improved chassis and driveline which delivers a further two per cent reduction in fuel use, as well as increasing payload by up to 114 kg. The truck is also fitted with Optivision predictive cruise control system with GPS. “Customer feedback shows us the Range T offers unrivalled performance in terms of fuel consumption and driving quality,” said Nigel Butler, commercial director at Renault Trucks UK. “We have been working along three tracks to make our customers even more cost efficient: improve the aerodynamics to reduce fuel consumption, reduce the weight to increase payload and encourage ecodriving by means of a predictive GPS navigation system.” To improve aerodynamics, Renault said it drew on its recent research carried out with its experimental Optifuel Lab 2 vehicle,

which led to the new Range T having an optional built-in spoiler under the bumper. “This spoiler can better direct the flow of air passing beneath the truck and considerably reduce aerodynamic disturbance, a potential source of increased consumption,” said Mike Stringer, senior sales engineer at Renault Trucks UK. “Furthermore, the new Range T introduces a new, lighter roof deflector without any metal framework, enabling the truck to penetrate the air more easily.” Depending on the version, Renault said this can save customers a further two per cent in fuel. Further weight saving has been achieved through redesigned or lightened components, and the truck can also now be fitted with an aluminium fifth wheel. The DTI 11 and DTI 13 engines have also been upgraded, and now all comply with the upcoming Euro 6 Step C standard, which will become mandatory on December 31. Common rail injection has been introduced on the DTI 13, and the engines are coupled to a new generation of Optidriver automated manual gearbox.

E

ssex-based operator Ahern Waste Management & Recycling Services has added its first Mercedes-Benz truck to its fleet in the form of a 26-tonne Antos. Supplied by S&B Commercials, the Antos 2530 has an M ClassicSpace cab and packs a 299 bhp engine and 12-speed PowerShift automated transmission. Its Heil compactor body, meanwhile, was removed from a previous truck, refurbished and fitted to the Merc chassis by Gloucestershire specialist Refuse Vehicle Solutions. It is capable of lifting trade waste bins with capacities of up to 1100 litres. Family-owned Ahern Waste Management & Recycling Services runs a fleet of 22 trucks and works for commercial customers throughout the South East, although local authorities also tip at the waste transfer stations located on its headquarters site in West Thurrock, and in Basildon. “These are still early days, of course, but the mpg returns are very encouraging and the driver loves his new Mercedes-Benz,” said the firm’s resources co-ordinator, Tony

Anderson. “I’ve taken the wheel myself and it’s a very nice, driver-friendly truck; well laid out and comfortable, with a really good ride. “I particularly like the automated transmission, which has a Creep mode but can also be switched off if the driver prefers for low-speed manoeuvring,” he added. The truck is being inspected and serviced under a seven-year Mercedes-Benz R&M contract by the workshop team at S&B Commercials’ Thurrock branch.

VOLVO TWEAKS BUILD FOR MEDIUM & HEAVY TRUCKS

V

olvo Trucks is adding a range of improvements to its FM, FMX, FH and FH16 model ranges which it claims can reduce fuel costs by up to five per cent. As part of the upgrade, Volvo has updated its engines to comply with the Euro 6 Step C regulation and has made aerodynamic optimisations to the Volvo FH cab, plus shaved a bit more weight off the chassis. Changes have primarily been made on the D11 and D13 engines, which now feature low-friction pistons, an all-new improved turbo, a higher compression ratio, an enhanced camshaft and refined management software. Among the measures that will improve the trucks’ aerodynamics and reduce air resistance include re-designed front spoiler, air deflectors, mudguards and a tighter wheel housing on FH models. “Since fuel accounts for a third of hauliers’ costs, every drop counts,” said Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks. “We are constantly working on improving the fuel efficiency of our vehicles. It is a philosophy of utilising every possible improvement and optimisation, small and big.” How much fuel these improvements can save will depend on the truck specification and application, the manufacturer said. For an FH driving long-distance, Volvo said combined optimisations can improve fuel consumption by up to three per cent. In severe applications, such as timber transport, a fuel saving of up to four per cent can be realised when the truck is combined with Volvo’s new I-Shift automated transmission with crawler gears (see NIB) and the new liftable tandem axle. The manufacturer said the advantage of better startability combined with a suitable rear axle ratio that optimises engine revs at high speeds when carrying heavy loads, and lifting the tandem axle when not fully loaded, will result in lower fuel consumption on highways.

Optimised bumper and spoiler aerodynamics are part of the refinements

t’s still there at the top of the tree. Volvo’s FH16-750 retains the title of the world’s most powerful production truck – although we reckon there must be a lot of drivers who’d like to see Scania take back the top power crown from its Swedish arch rival. Volvo calls its mighty FH16-750 ‘a beauty on the surface’ and ‘a beast under the hood’. And that’s quite an accurate description. If you like bling, this truck has a heady mixture of tasty items to set your pulse racing. For example, the colour on the outside is a strange black which is certainly dark, but has a tint to it – an undertone Volvo calls ‘Mystic Fjord’. Of course the cab is also the top model – the Globetrotter XL that gives the driver lots of interior space. Since Volvo redesigned the cab, lost some of the rake at the front and rejigged the interior, useable and useful interior space has been increased. The upholstery is black with yellow design, and the special seats – available in either leather or leather/textile combination – can be specified with ventilation. They call the steering wheel – in dark leather with yellow stitching – ‘The Raven’ and this is only available on the FH16. The dark silver grille, mirrors and sun visor and subtle chromed bits around the truck make it stand out from the crowd and make a bold statement. This is one classy truck. Volvo’s powerful straight-six motor has been upgraded to Euro 6 using both selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), as well as having a diesel particulate filter (DPF). So not only is this engine a top-power unit, it is also ultra-clean. The engine is mated to an I-Shift 12-speed overdrive automated transmission. The unit provides silky smooth gear changes and is simple to use. Volvo has stuck with its stubby gear lever which protrudes from a console that is attached to the left of the driver’s seat. It’s ideally situated and is a more natural design for a driver to use. Two items have changed on the later models: the ignition key is now on the dash rather than on the side of the steering column – which takes a bit of getting used to as you naturally aim for the steering column when you first get into the truck – and the parking brake is also dash-mounted, but is now a switch rather than a lever. Both these design changes have been made to reduce equipment

Top power: You don’t really need 750 horses for UK operations, but there’s no denying this is a premium drive! incursion in the cab, lessening the likelihood that a driver moving around on the inside will snag on knobs and levers that are sticking out and causing obstructions.

Driving impressions

When we road test Volvo trucks, we follow a route out of Volvo’s Warwick headquarters that includes some steep climbs and descents which can really show up any truck lacking in the power department. Wending our way along the A429, the road is surprisingly clear of other trucks, the odd car speeding past us on the intermittent long straights. Anyone familiar with this road (we were driving in the Warwick to Cirencester direction) will know there are a couple of places where you drop down into hollows, before climbing steep hills out – one of which has traffic lights at the bottom of it which are invariably red! Neither gives you the chance of taking a run at the hill,

as the descent on both is steep and winding. Undoubtedly in the early days, driving trucks with low-powered motors and slow and clunky manual gearboxes on this route saw many a half-shaft sheared, or gearbox destroyed through panicstricken gearchanges. The infamous Birdlip Hill in Gloucestershire is another climb that still catches drivers out and has seen many a truck come to grief half way up. But there are no dramas here in the FH16750. Whereas most trucks are down to a snail’s pace on the climb out of the hollows, the mighty Volvo powers up the hills – we actually overtook a brick and block wagon and drag near the top of one of them. You could see the look of envy in the driver’s face as we surged past him, gaining speed over his truck even though the hill was levelling out and he was also gaining momentum. You do need to keep an eye on your speed. The truck doesn’t give the impression you are belting along in it, and with the number of speed cameras and police and so-called ‘safety partnership’ mobile speed checks now operating on the roads, as well as the need to get the best mpg from the truck, it’s wise to engage cruise control as much

as possible. Once onto the M5 at Junction 11A, the drive became totally uneventful. Off the motorway at Junction 9 (the Tewkesbury interchange) and picking up the A46, to skirt Evesham and follow the road back to Warwick, we may as well have been driving in the flat land of Holland. Then it was just a case of handing the keys back and heading home, job done! It’s been said before but we have to say it again: you really don’t need all this power. The 750 horses are better suited to heading up road trains in Australia, hauling the 60 tonne-plus gross weights in its native Sweden, or tackling heavy haulage work anywhere in the world. It is certainly overkill here in the UK running at our ‘meagre’ 44 tonne gross weight. But what a superb tool this truck is. It is sure to put a smile on any driver’s face, knowing all that power is lurking there, just waiting to be unleashed. You don’t have to fear any road or any route. Hills can be climbed with absolute ease, the Volvo Engine Brake feeding the truck effortlessly down the steepest descents.

HOLE LOTTA CASH: GOV PONIES UP FOR POTHOLE PROBLEM

T

he government has set how out its £250 million Pothole Action Fund, revealed in the March Budget, will be deployed to fix up British roads. It said £50 million of funding will be used to repair nearly 1 million potholes across the country over the next 12 months, with over 100 councils in England receiving funding to help remove around 943,000 potholes from local roads. The government said it has earmarked the fund to fix over four million potholes by 2020/21. “I know how important well-maintained roads are to people across the country,” said transport secretary, Patrick McLoughlin. “Almost every journey starts and ends on a local road, so the government is giving councils £250 million specifically to tackle the blight of potholes in their area.” In total, the government has promised to spend £6.1 billion on local highways maintenance between 2015/16 and 2020/21,

which it said gives councils “long-term certainty” for the first time to plan future work with the aim of preventing potholes and improving local roads, bridges and street lighting. But Matt Dyer, managing director of vehicle management group LeasePlan, queried whether the current fund is enough. “According to local authorities last year, it will take another £10.5 billion to fill in every single pothole currently on the road,” he said. “With this in mind, we might ask whether this socalled permanent pothole fund is enough.” He added that filling in potholes was no substitute for modernising Britain’s road network. “Part of the reason why there are so many potholes in the first place is because the roads are aged and decrepit,” he argued. “Only time will tell, but with the extreme wet weather, more cars on the road than ever and the lowest fuel prices since August 2009, it’s looking more like potholes may be a permanent ongoing fixture on our roads.”

Gov said it will fork out £50m each year for five years to rid our roads of potholes

EUROPEAN TRUCK PLATOONING CHALLENGE BRANDED A SUCCESS

A

number of major truck manufacturers have taken part in a Truck Platooning Challenge, organised by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and designed to demonstrate the viability of convoys of automated trucks using the European road network. Platooning involves trucks driving closely behind each other while communicating wirelessly, and the theory is the vehicles’ fuel economy is improved as a result of the reduction in drag. Drag accounts for up to 25 per cent of a truck’s total fuel consumption, and the closer the trucks drive to each other, the greater the fuelsaving potential. By reducing the gap between truck combinations as far as possible and making the most of slipstreaming, it’s thought fuel savings of up to 10 per cent can be achieved along with equivalent reductions in CO2 emissions. The trucks automatically match each other’s speed and braking via communication through wifi. This means that, in principle, reaction time is reduced to zero when braking, which should lead

Flemish minister of transport, Ben Weyts to improved safety and a reduced ‘accordion effect’ linked to traffic congestion. DAF, Daimler, Iveco, MAN, Scania and Volvo took part in the challenge, which saw convoys from each manufacturer undertaking a run from several European cities to Rotterdam in early April. Scania had the longest route, departing from Södertalje, south of Stockholm and driving through Sweden, Denmark and Germany on a trip totalling more than 2000 km. Volvo’s convoy travelled from Gothenburg,

Six manufacturers took part in the challenge, crossing Europe from various starting points while Daimler started from Stuttgart. MAN departed from Munich, Iveco set off from Brussels and DAF began from its production site in Westerlo, Belgium. “The results of this first ever major tryout in Europe are promising,” said Dutch Infrastructure and the Environment minister, Schultz van Haegen. “As the test shows, the technology has come a long way already. What it also makes clear is we Europeans need to better harmonise rules of the road and rules for drivers. This will open the door for upscaled, cross-border truck platooning.
