on the road network, the Department for Transport (DfT) asked DVSA to review the sanctions it issued at the roadside for vehicles with defective fuel tanks and systems.

Last year, HA reported 255 fuel spills, including on dual carriageways and motorways, resulting in lane closures and significant delays.

DVSA said aside from the obvious risks to road safety, it takes an average of five hours to clear a fuel spill, which causes major disruption to traffic.

“During roadside checks between 2013 to 2014, DVSA examiners detected 2390

fuel system defects and issued over 1500 prohibitions to vehicles with defective fuel systems,” the blog said.

“We’ve reviewed our sanctions for defective fuel systems and agreed some changes with DfT. The main difference is we’ll now only issue immediate prohibitions for defective fuel systems and leaks,” it continued.

DVSA said an immediate prohibition will be given for missing or ineffective fuel cap or sealing arrangement; fuel leak caused by a defect, contaminating the road surface; or insecure fuel tank where detachment is imminent.

PICKERINGS’ FM IS ‘PERFECT 10’

T

he ability to specify the new-series Volvo FM six-wheel rigid with a 10-tonne front axle has sealed the deal for Pickerings Plant, which has put two on the road and ordered another six from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, Bardon.

The trucks are the first Volvos to be operated by the Measham, Leicestershirebased company.

Pickerings’ transport manager Kevin Barber said the improved weight distribution and additional loading tolerance of a 10-tonne front axle on the FM 6x2 rigids suited its operation. The additional axle loading tolerance provided by the 10-tonne front axle is a vital part of the specification, he said, as the trucks are equipped with Fassi cranes, mounted behind the cab.

These are used to handle not only plant, but also the accommodation and welfare units used on construction sites, which form an important and growing part of the business.

Pickerings Plant currently operates 22 rigids at 26 tonnes gvw out of 11 locations in England and Wales. Barber said the

company is growing and is investing in new depots and new trucks. ”New depots were recently opened at Maidstone and Tiverton,” he said. “In addition, those at Stafford and Teesside have been relocated, and with purpose-built facilities now in place, this will suit our every need.”

The ongoing expansion was cited as the reason behind the specification of sleeper cabs on the new FMs, as they provide the operation with the option of nights out if and when needed.

The FMs were specified with Volvo’s Euro 6, D11K 11-litre engine rated at 330 bhp, and I-Shift automated gearboxes. The single drive axle and single-wheeled tag axle are air-suspended. The tag axle lifts, but does not steer.

According to Barber, unladen weight of the plant-bodied FM, including the crane, heavy-duty bodywork and steel wheels, is 16,464 kg. A typical load is around 9200 kg. The FM specified for the transport of accommodation and welfare units tares out at around 17,869 kg.

The 14.4 m reach of the five-stage chassis-mounted Fassi F455 crane enables the truck to be loaded in a straight line over the back of the body. The 7.62 m bodywork features extendible twist locks and a mechanically operated chain box to reduce the need for manual handling. Overall length

of the rigid is 11.60 m.

By way of contrast with the Volvo FM specified for carrying accommodation and welfare units, the truck spec for plant haulage utilises a Fassi 365, medium duty, knuckle boom crane with a 10.2 m reach and ‘cheese wedge’ loading ramps.

nack food firm Tayto Group reckons it has slashed its annual fuel spend by £72,000 and drastically reduced its carbon footprint after using TomTom Telematics to transform driver behaviour.

The Armagh-based firm said it has boosted its mpg by 15 per cent by reducing both speeding and idling through a programme to improve driving performance.

The scheme is underpinned by TomTom’s WEBFLEET service, which enables Tayto to monitor aspects of driving style including speeding, acceleration, fuel efficiency, idling time and harsh steering or braking.

“By gaining unprecedented insight into the behaviour of our drivers, we have been able to address areas of poor performance and drastically reduce inefficiency in the operation of our vehicle fleet,” said Peter Rush, purchasing and fleet manager at Tayto Group.

“The data delivered by WEBFLEET provided the perfect starting point for us

to work with our staff to help them better understand where improvements could be made and, ultimately, become better, safer and more environmentally-aware drivers.”

Tayto worked in partnership with TomTom reseller partner Fleet Simplicity to develop processes that enabled them to make best use of the data provided by WEBFLEET to meet their specific business goals.

Drivers are provided with weekly communications on speeding, idling and driver behaviour, as well as twice-weekly fuel awareness updates, monthly group reviews and targeted training. WEBFLEET also profiles each driver, giving them a score from one to 10 based on how safely and efficiently they are driving in terms of speeding, incidences of harsh steering or braking and mpg. As a result of being able to manage and communicate using the score, Tayto said it achieved a 42 per cent improvement in average scores in 12 months.

Keith said: “One of the main qualities of the MAN truck is its reliability. Mat will be upgrading his truck with the styling of the new MAN Euro 6 cab.

“He is hoping to upgrade the engine to the new A-Class MAN Race engine and will be modifying it to deliver 1250 bhp on the track. He will be looking for further success in Britain and again in Europe.”

The new MANs are the first Euro 6 models into the Tempur fleet and enter the fleet alongside a number of existing Euro 5 TGL lightweights.

by Newland Coachworks. All the vehicles were supplied by Cordwallis in Heathrow, which will also undertake repair and

maintenance duties.

“We have used MAN trucks for the last two years,” said transport manager, Marilia Pinto, “and we have been very happy with performance from the trucks and with the service support from the MAN dealer.

“The MANs deliver a striking on-road presence,” she added, “reflecting our own image for high quality. MAN was also able to provide an excellent whole life package as the basis for the Euro 6 acquisition.

“All round, it made for an easy decision when selecting the new fleet,” she concluded.

hropshire-based haulage and storage company AJ Maiden & Son – which trades as Maiden’s of Telford – has taken delivery of three Stralis Hi-Way tractor units, marking the first Ivecos to join its fleet for more than 15 years.

The family-run company operates a fleet of 66 vehicles and 130 trailers, with the new Stralis replacing older units.

The firm said it had been seeking a vehicle that could provide it with increased reliability and performance as it grows its business. “We were keen to see what a Euro 6 vehicle could do for us and we wanted to explore what was available, so we jumped at the chance to take an Iveco demonstrator on competitive trial,” said Maiden’s commercial manager, Hefin Rees.

Rees said the company was so impressed with the performance of the demonstrator, supplied by Guest Truck & Van, that it soon placed an order for a trio of matching Iveco trucks.

“Our drivers were really positive about getting their hands on a Stralis and the feedback has been excellent since our new vehicles arrived,” Rees said. “We’ve already seen the demonstrator show fuel savings

compared with our fleet average and we’re confident the new Stralis will continue to give great service.”

Maiden’s said it was particularly impressed with Iveco’s solution to Euro 6, and the ability of the manufacturer’s HISCR system to meet the latest emissions standard without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

“Iveco secured the order for its unique approach to Euro 6,” Rees concluded.

“They’ve devised a technical solution which is not only innovative, but durable and focused on helping fleets like ours to keep running costs as low as possible.”

Each of the firm’s new Stralis is powered by a Euro 6 Iveco Cursor 11 engine which can produce up 460 bhp between 15001900 rpm, and 2150 Nm of torque between 925-1500 rpm. The engine also features a new Super Engine Brake, which uses an exhaust throttle valve to improve the performance of the engine further compared to the previous generation.

The tractor units will remain in the fleet for a minimum of five years and they are expected to clock up an average of 100,000 miles a year.

The derogated Euro 5 DAF 7.5-tonne and 18-tonne curtainsiders are a mixture of replacements and additions to the existing Tara fleet, and will be used on urgent and overnight air freight deliveries across the UK. Tara RoadAir recently celebrated its first decade of business and operates at the East Midlands airport and across the region.

“I started the company with just a couple of vans and during the past 10 years have established a reputation for service excellence that has helped the business to continue to develop and grow,” said Tara’s managing director, Dave Courage.

“We now have a fleet of 12 vehicles that are mainly used for transporting commodities such as aircraft parts and paper products to major airfreight terminals across mainland Britain, as well as Northern Ireland.

“We switched to sourcing our trucks on contract hire from Ryder at an early stage in the company’s growth, as it provide us with the benefit of fixed costs, operational reliability and a superb brand image. ndependent chilled and frozen food sales and distribution specialist PRM Group has marked its silver anniversary by commissioning its first Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz trucks.

The Lisburn-based company purchased a 15-tonne Atego 1518 and a 26-tonne Antos 2532 from Newtownabbey dealer MercedesBenz Truck & Van (NI).

Both are fitted with insulated, temperaturecontrolled bodywork by Gray & Adams – the Atego is also the first truck in Ireland to be fitted with the manufacturer’s latestgeneration, aerodynamically efficient cappings.

The Antos has joined PRM’s general distribution fleet, while the Atego is dedicated to the distribution throughout Northern Ireland of ice cream brands from the Unilever portfolio – including Cornetto, Magnum and Twister.

A Mercedes customer since its foundation in 1989 by husband-and-wife team Philip and Lynne Morrow, PRM Group runs a fleet of 15 rigids of varying sizes, as well as 17 tractor units and 22 semi-trailers.

The company’s latest Atego has an S ClassicSpace cab and 177 bhp four-cylinder engine mated to a standard-fit, eight-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmission.

The six-wheeled Antos has a lifting tag axle and M ClassicSpace cab, while its 320 bhp straight-six drives through a 12-speed version of the same auto ’box as its smaller sibling.

“With their comfortable, well-designed and comprehensively equipped cabs, advanced high-torque engines and outstanding driving dynamics, our latest Atego and Antos trucks are a big hit with their drivers,” said managing director, Philip Morrow. “Meanwhile, we’re benefiting from the fact these vehicles consume less fuel and significantly less AdBlue than their Euro 5 equivalents, while also dramatically reducing particulate and nitrogen oxide emissions.”

PRM Group, whose customer portfolio includes some of the biggest names in food retailing, provides daily deliveries to depots and retail stores across the Ireland from its hub in Lisburn. Its tractor and trailer combinations undertake UK as well as Irish haulage, while the larger rigids are on general distribution duties and the smaller vehicles are used for more local deliveries and van sales.

Built at Gray & Adams’ production facility in Newtownabbey, the 15-tonner’s 6.1 m body has upgraded insulation for enhanced thermal efficiency, and a high-performance Thermo King T-1000 Spectrum refrigeration unit.

While the smaller vehicle’s body is brand new, the 26-tonner’s 8.9 m box had already provided eight years’ reliable service when it was removed from a previous six-wheeled chassis by Gray & Adams, which then carried out a comprehensive refurbishment programme before re-fitting it to the new Antos.

CEMEX LAUNCHES DRIVER APPRENTICESHIP

One-year programme nets candidates a DGV apprentice qualification

N

ine driver apprentices have embarked on the first ever driver apprentice scheme run by building materials supplier CEMEX UK. The one-year scheme is being conducted in conjunction with Systems Training, and at the end of the year candidates will achieve a DGV apprentice qualification.

CEMEX said the apprentices joined the scheme after a national recruitment drive to encourage young people into the industry. All the apprentices are 23 years old and under, and the national recruitment initiative resulted in 50 applications for the nine positions based at CEMEX quarries and logistics depots throughout the country.

“This is the first time we have introduced a scheme in logistics to deal with an-industry wide issue,” said Matthew Wild, VP cement

commercial, logistics and building products.

“The scheme is in response to a national shortage of drivers. Only 0.2 per cent of our drivers are under 25 years old, and 10 per cent of our LGV drivers are aged 60 or over. In the next five years, 10 per cent of our drivers will retire.

“This scheme will help to fill the gap and if successful, we plan to run it every year,” Wild concluded.

As well as producing skilled drivers trained to put safety first, CEMEX said the apprentices will graduate with a sound knowledge of the business and undergo significant personal development.

Each driver has a driver and logistics manager to mentor with two regional logistics managers, Carl Milton and Rob Wilkinson, overseeing the scheme.

EURO 6 BLAMED FOR TRUCK SALES DECLINE

F

igures for new commercial vehicle registrations have revealed 2014 was a predictably slow year as the market continued to feel the effects of the introduction of Euro 6 legislation.

Speaking at a media briefing at the end of last year, David Smith, UK managing director for tyre manufacturer Continental, described the results for 2014 as unsurprising, due in part to the rush to register Euro 5 models before the legislative cut-off dates.

Year-to-date figures released by the SMMT show total registrations for trucks in 2014 are down by nine per cent.

Despite this, the month of October saw truck registrations jump by around 70 per cent, which Smith attributed largely to the introduction of the European Directive for Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA), which came into force on November 1.

“WVTA requires any new commercial vehicle to have an approval certificate for both the truck and body before registration,” Smith said. “The spike seen in October indicates the natural rush to beat its introduction.”

an increase in trailer production of over 20 per cent compared to 2013 figures, and an increase of nearly 45 per cent from 2012.

Smith cited a buoyant UK economy within the transport sector driving demand for new trailers as a reason for the rise in production, as well as a number of older existing trailers which should have been replaced during the recession and are now in desperate need of renewal.

For the UK tyre market, the replacement sector again saw an increase in 2014, following on from the previous year’s strong results, and Smith said Continental was forecasting an increase of around eight per cent on 2013 in the UK. In the Republic of Ireland, figures suggested the Irish market finished five per cent down on 2013. However, Smith suggested this could be ascribed to a surge in imports of European brands which are not recorded in the statistics as Irish sales. A broader view of Europe showed the market was up by three per cent in 2014, with the strongest growth (seven per cent) recorded in Western Europe.

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention.

A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call.

In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”.

So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. ISSUES OF BREAK, REST & POA

One of the thorny issues which I get a number of queries about is what exactly is a break or rest period – in particular, when considering periods of availability. The first place to look is Regulation 561/2006. Right at the outset in Article 1, it states this Regulation lays down rules on driving times, breaks and rest periods for drivers engaged in the carriage of goods and passengers by road to harmonise the conditions of competition between modes of inland transport, especially with regard to the road sector, and to improve working conditions and road safety. This Regulation also aims to promote improved monitoring and enforcement practices by Member States and improved working practices in the road transport industry.

It goes to specify certain definitions which are essential to understanding whether a driver is complying with break and rest requirements. At Article 4, it states that ‘break’ means any period during which a driver may not carry out any driving or any other work and which is used exclusively for recuperation; ‘other work’ means all activities which are defined as working time in Article 3(a) of Directive 2002/15/ EC except ‘driving’, including any work for the same or another employer, within or outside of the transport sector.

No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500.

ROAD PLANS SECURED AS DRIVER SHORTAGE WORSENS

T

he government has cemented its promise to invest £15 billion into improving Britain’s straining road network with the issue of chancellor George Osborne’s Autumn Statement in December – though no steps were taken to deal with the escalating driver shortage.

As Truckstop News reported last issue, the government has pledged a series of developments and upgrades aimed at improving the country’s road infrastructure – from spending £1.5 billion on adding more lanes to some motorways, to improving junctions on the M25 and building a tunnel under Stonehenge to carry more traffic on the A303.

The plans have been broadly welcomed by the industry, which has cited the UK’s poor highway network as a constant obstacle for British hauliers.

The RAC’s chief engineer, David Bizley, labelled the road investment strategy “a victory for common sense”.

“The announcement is a clear blueprint for investment in England’s strategic road network which will deliver long-term benefits for all road users and for the UK economy,” he said. “The strategy is primarily aimed at improving the existing network with only

a small minority of schemes involving new routes and in this way, environmental impact is minimised.”

Bizley added the challenge was now to secure the commitment of the next government to complete the plans “to ensure they are delivered on time and within budget, and that the strategy does not become just another set of empty promises.”

But while roads upgrades were welcomed, the government came under fire from the Road Haulage Association over its refusal to make funding available to help new truck drivers pay for training – which the Association said would help tackle the mounting driver shortage.

“We face a serious and worsening shortage of lorry drivers, which is already holding back growth, and significant government funding is needed to reverse that,” said RHA chief executive, Richard Burnett. “This is fast becoming the biggest issue that the road haulage industry has ever had to cope with.

“There is a 45,000 driver shortage now, 35,000 drivers are due to retire within the next year and only 17,000 drivers are joining the industry,” he said. “The opportunity was there to end the long trend of under-investment and

The bill, which provides the legal framework for the government’s £15 billion ‘Road investment strategy’, includes major reforms to the Highways Agency (HA) – which is now set to become a government-owned company.

The Highways Agency will be renamed as Highways England from April 2015, and will be responsible for delivering over 100 new road schemes between now and the end of next parliament.

“It is only right that the new government-

owned company has a name that reflects its new role, as a road operator that delivers a fast, efficient and better service for road users and the country,” said roads minister, John Hayes.

A strategic road network monitor role will be undertaken by the Office of Rail Regulation, which will publish information on the performance of the new Highways England and will have the power to take action for poor performance.

The bill will also see Passenger Focus renamed Transport Focus, to provide road users with a stronger voice in how roads are managed and maintained. It is expected to receive Royal Assent by March 2015.

The government shored up plans to upgrade British roads, though no help was given to stem the lack of skilled drivers entering the industry wholesale reliance on bringing in drivers from Eastern Europe.

“Thirty months ago, the logistics sector skills council identified the lack of funding as a key reason why we would soon have

a serious driver shortage. Funding is readily available in many other, less vital sectors of the economy, with a limited level of availability for training lorry drivers, which is inaccessible and wholly inadequate,” Burnett concluded.

he UK’s first right-hand drive 6x2 newseries Volvo FE Low Entry Cab (LEC) has entered service with Neales Waste Management in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The new truck is the company’s first Euro 6 vehicle in its predominantly Volvo fleet. Power is provided by the Swedish manufacturer’s D8 eight-litre engine rated at 320 bhp, driving through an Allison Automatic transmission.

It is also equipped with a Farid TISM-22 RCV body.

The new FE LEC is based on the latest generation of Volvo’s medium-duty Volvo FE – meaning the chassis, driveline, design, instruments and controls are all more or less identical.

Letter CYCLISTS, STAY BACK! I write concerning a recent topic on the Radio 2 Jeremy Vine Show about cyclists taking offence to a simple sign/sticker stating ‘CYCLIST STAY BACK’.

Let me make it perfectly clear that I’m not just an HGV Class 1 driver, but also a keen mountain biker with a £3000 bike. However, I can understand the reasons why even car-derived vans have started displaying these stickers on their vehicles, let alone trucks and buses.

What they are doing is ‘covering their own backs’ like the ‘MIND THE STEP’ sign and ‘MIND YOUR HEAD’, because no matter what they plaster on their vehicles, they

I unfortunately had this experience in Central London when I collided with a cyclist, but when the CPS took me to court and the cyclist was under oath, she said she had seen these signs before but never took any notice of them because WE DRIVERS should be looking out for them.

Luckily, the judges threw it out and it was an experience I never wish to repeat.

The point I’m trying to make is that no matter what cameras, stickers or sensors transport centre of the vehicle, which begs the question: are the chassis and engine configuration going to be totally redesigned, or is the driver going to be basically sitting on top of the radiator with his/hers legs dangling out front?

There needs to be a great deal of thought to avoid a significant increase in leg and lower body injury to HGV drivers, as any frontal impact would put the driver’s legs and lower body

4X4 FL HEADS OFF-ROAD

olvo has introduced a four-wheel drive (4x4) version of its compact FL chassis specifically targeted for service and off-road applications.

The Swedish manufacturer said the FL 4x4 will cater for those who require off-road capabilities in a compact distribution truck suitable for payloads of 6-8 tonnes. The new 4x4 range is available at 12-, 14- or 16-tonnes GVW. For compatibility with cherry pickers, cranes and fire tenders, the FL 4x4 is available with a day cab, a three-person comfort cab with the option of bench seat or a seven-seat four-door crew cab.

The 4x4 chassis has a 2.1 m cab and wheelbase options from 3350-4100 mm. ”The most noticeable difference with the new FL with 4x4 is the raised off-road defined chassis and 22.5 inch wheel, which increases its ground clearance by just over 6 cm at the front and 10 cm at the rear,” said John

Comer, product manager at Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland. “The higher chassis also increases the vehicle approach angle to 25 degrees, making it easier for the truck to drive out of ditches or deep ruts.”

The FL 4x4 is equipped with the sixcylinder Volvo D8K engine at 250 bhp or 280 bhp, matched to a standard six-speed manual gearbox and deep rear axles of 5.86:1 or 6.31:1. Volvo said an automatic ’box will be available to special order.

The truck has permanently engaged fourwheel drive, and the distribution gearbox has a ‘high gear’ and a ‘low gear’ setting. The high gear is used during normal operation; but for challenging conditions, the low gear can be engaged by pressing a button on the instrument panel The truck can also be equipped with an extra air nipple on the chassis for operating various accessories or inflating tyres.

hancellor George Osborne has confirmed fuel duty will remain frozen until the end of the current parliament in May 2015 as part of his recent Autumn Statement.

Osborne also confirmed the pricebased trigger point for changes to both the supplementary charge and fuel duty, set by the Fair Fuel Stabiliser in 2011, will be scrapped.

The government added it will continue with its plans to install special signage on motorways that will show drivers the price of fuel on offer at service stations, which it said should help promote competition between retailers and subsequently lower diesel prices.

PROHIRE PICKS DAF FOR RENTAL FLEET UPGRADE

C

ommercial vehicle contract hire and fleet management firm Prohire PLC has added new LF and CF trucks to its short-term rental fleet based on the performance of its early DAF Euro 6 trucks after their first six months of operation.

It’s new 18-tonne LF250s are fitted with six-cylinder, 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 Euro 6 engines, while the CF290 FAR 6x2 vehicles are rated at 26 tonnes with six-cylinder, 10.8-litre, PACCAR MX-11 Euro 6 engines.

The trucks are used exclusively for Prohire’s short-term rental division and are based across the UK, sometimes driven by a different driver every day, and expected to cover around 500,000 km during their fiveyear lifecycle.

They were supplied via Lancashire DAF in Preston, and as the majority of Prohire’s customers operate in the haulage and distribution sectors, it chose rigid bodies fitted with curtainsides by commercial vehicle bodybuilder, Martin Williams (Hull) Limited.

When procuring its new trucks last year, Prohire said it opted for Euro 6 vehicles due to their enhanced efficiency and environmental credentials.

“At the time, we could easily have chosen well-proven Euro 5 models, but that seemed like a backward step – and DAF gave us the confidence to invest in its new LF and CF Euro 6 models as we wanted to offer our customers the latest technology and best fuel economy,” said Dave Barlow, commercial director, Prohire.

“And we haven’t regretted it. After six months on our busy short-term rental fleet, used by a wide variety of commercial operators, any worries about the new Euro 6 technology has been completely unfounded in our experience as we haven’t had any issues or negative comments, which is a really positive sign.”

DAF trucks represent around 50 per cent of the vehicles on Prohire’s total HGV fleet.

A

joint charitable project involving DAF Trucks and members of the Transport Association has raised £12,000 for Helen & Douglas House, the world’s first children’s hospice when it was created in 1982.

Located in Oxfordshire near DAF’s HQ in Thame, the hospice offers care for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions as well as support for their families.

On the last day of term, children and staff at the Addington School in Reading had a surprise visit from one of the three DAF XF Helen & Douglas House charity demonstrators. The three demonstrators, which have been built for the exclusive use of members of the Transport Association, are currently operating across the UK.

Addington is a special school which caters for 205 pupils with moderate, severe or profound learning needs. The purpose built school opened five years ago and many of pupils and their families rely on Helen and Douglas House for respite care.

DAF said it is donating the use of a specially liveried 6x2 44-tonne XF tractor unit with a Cartwright 13.6 m curtainsider semi-trailer together with two further XF tractor units. Members of the Transport Association can rent these at competitive weekly rates, with 100 per cent of their rental payments being donated to Helen & Douglas House.

The Transport Association is made up of around 60 haulage companies, largely family-owned and run and operating a total of 4000 vehicles.

Mack Transport’s Isuzu N75.190 is fitted with versatile Recovery World transporter body

arwich-based Mack Transport Ltd has taken delivery of a new Isuzu N75.190 with twin-deck transporter body from Recovery World.

Mack Transport runs 10 trucks, with the bulk of its fleet made up of full-size transporters capable of carrying up to 11 cars. However, the firm needed a smaller vehicle for work at a car auction site in Peterborough – and operator Steve Mack said the N75 fit the bill.

“We usually buy new vehicles, but started this operation with a used Isuzu. It worked well, and we’ve now invested in this new truck and trailer combination from Recovery World.”

The trailer is designed as a cross-over unit allowing cars to be loaded or unloaded from the truck without uncoupling the trailer,

which can help speed up deliveries.

“It’s versatile and is working really well,” Mack said. “We’re working well within the vehicle’s weight limits, and have the ability to move heavy four-by-fours on the trailer while carrying two cars on the truck.”

The N75.190 is a 7.5-tonner powered by a 5.2-litre 190 bhp Euro 6 Isuzu engine coupled to a six-speed manual gearbox. The body is constructed from galvanised steel and has aluminium chequerplate decking.

The bottom deck is 20 ft 6 inches long and 7 ft 6 inches wide, while the hydraulically raised upper platform is 15 ft 5 inches long and 7 ft 2 inches wide and has a capacity of 1500 kg.

Aluminium slide-out ramps are fitted, and the truck has a Warn M6000 winch with wander lead.

ehicle cameras have been shown to have a significant impact on road safety and insurance costs – including a reduction in accident frequency of 45 per cent – according to a recent study by Intelligent Telematics.

The findings were taken from the analysis of 2000 commercial vehicles using the company’s IT1000 camera over a sixmonth period, which also found that as well as actually preventing accidents from

happening, the cost of those that did occur were 27 per cent less as a result of instant intervention.

“The cameras are not only preventing incidents and discouraging other road users from making a fraudulent or inflated claims, but when an accident does happen, the footage is available from the scene within seconds so first notification of loss is helping achieve substantial insurance claim cost savings,” said the firm’s CTO, Nick Plowman.

FARRALL’S FIELDS DEESIDE DEPOT UPGRADE

heshire-based Farrall’s Transport has invested £3.5 million expanding its warehousing capacity with a further 81,000 sq ft food-grade facility at Deeside Industrial Estate, Deeside.

The firm said its new warehouse complements its existing 80,000 sq ft distribution centre on the same industrial park.

Located on one of the largest commercial sites in North Wales, Farrall’s new Deeside warehouse is close to Liverpool Docks and the new Liverpool SuperPort, due to open in 2015, which the

new version of trucker parking guide HGVparking has been released for Android smartphones to help drivers easily find places to rest up while out on the road.

The app shares a variety of drivercontributed parking sites across the UK, uniquely categorised into six specific types (lay-bys, car parks, industrial areas, truck stops, garages and MSA). In addition, the developer has also gathered sites across Europe for Continental drivers.

Fuel bunkering sites and low bridge data is also included in the new app.

“With the launch of the HGVparking app for Android, HGVparking.com has an opportunity to make significant changes in the way drivers plan their routes,” said Phil Walker, HGVparking.com founder. “Advances in technology have come along way, even in the last year, and more and more drivers – and even their transport offices – rely on and plan with the increasing information rich technology available to them.”

PLANS TO BIN COUNTERPART LICENCES POSTPONED

T

he government has delayed plans to abolish the paper counterpart to the driving licence to June 8 after the Freight Transport Association (FTA) argued the proposed replacement online system was “not fit for purpose”.

The removal of the counterpart to the driving licence was planned to go ahead on January 1, 2015 as part of the government’s drive to reduce unnecessary burden to business.

The move was originally supported by the FTA on the condition a suitable online replacement agreed by business users was in place prior to its removal. However, the FTA said a workable alternative has not

materialised.

It said the delay was good news for employers who rely on the counterpart to ensure their drivers are legally able to drive.

“Businesses that employ a large number of people who have to drive for a living have a critical role in ensuring these drivers are safe and eligible to be on the road,” said Ian Gallagher, FTA head of policy for driver licencing. “FTA members desperately want a sophisticated electronic system for monitoring their drivers – but the system the government is currently proposing is not suitable for business needs.”

The Driver Vehicle Licence Agency (DVLA) proposed a replacement that relies

on the individual driver logging into the ‘View Driver Record’ system and printing off a copy of their counterpart details. This can be given to an employer, who will be able to verify the information within 48 hours by also going online.

While this process may work for some employers, FTA said its members who employ many thousands of drivers and have their licences checked up to three times a year, will find the new scheme both time consuming and costly.

lantrisant, South Wales-based plant hire specialist Tom Prichard Contracting has taken delivery of a new custombuilt plant body from Andover Trailers after receiving recommendations regarding the product’s durability.

The firm has a fleet of 30 trucks that are used to transport a wide range of plant equipment to customers across Wales and the South West.

Prichard’s new LPPB32 body is mounted to a 32-tonne Scania 8x2 rigid and fitted with hydraulic power toe ramps, hydraulic steady legs and six sets of lashing points in the floor, as well as an electric Superwinch and plastic toolbox to ensure equipment can be securely stowed away.

In addition, the deck is five inches lower than a regular plant body which enables Tom Prichard Contracting to make use of low ramp and beavertail approach angles – making it easier to load and unload machinery when visiting customer sites.

The new plant body is being used to transport a variety of equipment from the company’s 400-strong fleet on a double-shift basis, seven days a week.

“We chose to work with Andover on this latest order for one simple reason – reputation,” said business owner, Tom Prichard.

“Andover has a fantastic reputation in the industry for building durable and reliable equipment, and that’s exactly what we need.

“The service we have received has been excellent and we won’t hesitate to work with the team at Andover again when we’re next looking to update our vehicles,” he added.

Tom Prichard Contracting was founded in 1995 solely as a plant hire company, but now offers a comprehensive service including demolition, site clearance, bulk earthworks, drainage, ground remediation, recycling and waste management.

heffield-based specialist entertainment logistics provider Stardes, which transports equipment for concerts and touring artistes throughout Europe, has taken four Schmitz Cargobull FP25 dry freight box van trailers to provide more capacity for its operations.

“Our trailer needs are quite different from that of a typical haulier and require a lot of customisation, such as extra internal lighting, load security equipment and bespoke loading ramp carriers,” said Stardes transport manager, Tim Stansbury. “Even with our extra demands, Schmitz Cargobull offered us a very short lead time, which is a critical factor for us.”

Stansbury said the firm plans to run the

new trailers for at least 15 years across Europe. “Schmitz Cargobull is probably the only manufacturer we know we can trust to have that kind of parts support and a reliable pan-European service network,” he added.

The trailers were delivered right on time for the start of a busy winter touring season.

Stardes said the FP25 trailer was a good fit for its operation as it sits lower on a unique Mega full chassis design, offering greater capacity while still remaining under the 4 m height limit imposed for international European transport.

The trailers were manufactured as a bespoke build from the factory in Vreden, and further modifications were carried out in the UK at Schmitz Cargobull’s Doncaster site.

To accommodate the double-deckers’ extra height, Morrisons called upon Buffaload’s engineering team to modify a number of their existing loading bays, while two new bays were purpose-built.

Cambridgeshire-based, family-owned Buffaload’s double-deck trailer fleet stands at 72 and is complemented by a number of urban, single-axle refrigerated trailers.

The company has recently expanded its cross-docking facility at its 16 acre Huntingdon site, and during 2014 took delivery of 31 new double-deck trailers.
