DISTRICT DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Kegalle, the City of the entrance to GEM CITY of Sri Lanka brought fame by bringing a Toastmasters Club at Kegalle. A group of individuals identified the need of building communicators and leaders sew the seed from the club. As a community club, Kegalle club too had difficult times retain members. But, the dedication and commitment of some members made the club dynamic by having a fun-filled yet quality club meetings. This shows that your club officers working as a team and making an impact on members.

Your members' success is your club's success.

Progress of your member achievement shows that how efficiently you plan your club activities. Kudos to all triple crown achievers and members who earned educational awards.

Featuring the Kegalle club in Toastmasters Magazine twice a year shows your members' interest in the club and its members. Being an outstation club clubs always find challanges.

PROGRAM QUALITY DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE ‘Time and tide wait for no man’ It seems just a few days ago but six months have swiftly flown by. It is now time not only to look forward to the next six months but also to look back and learn as it is never too late to begin again as a strong team.

One of the most important aspects of an effective team is having clarity of purpose and direction.

It is always good to question ourselves and re-question ourselves to help us understand the purpose of our team. If we ask the question ‘What is the objective for this team?’ there would be various answers.

However, this is a key question as some of us might think it is communication, while others will say it is leadership and so on . . .

However, it is essential that we as a team decide what our objectives are and those objectives should include the many different objectives of our members also, while we walk

Your club is an example to show to the community clubs to show how you serve your members better. Congratulations to each and every member of this club who take initiative to engage in club activities/projects/meetings.

Toastmasters Club is a self-service club where we take an opportunity to improve ourselves and serve others too. However, being a club located in Kegalle City which is surrounded by hundreds of villages Toastmasters service is needed by Thousands in numbers. This does not limit to form more clubs but in many formats. Each and every member can be part of such volunteer projects/events. Look for a vision and make your long term plan which will make your club as a unique club.

Congratulations on all your achievements and best wishes to each and every one of your club members to become an extra achiever.

That is why we need to communicate; that is why we need to ask questions; that is why we need to see to the individual needs of our members. In doing this we should see the value of each toastmaster in our club which in turn would benefit the entire club. Some would be good speakers, others would be good evaluators.

However, if we look at the objectives of Toastmasters International we should make our good speakers into good evaluators and our good evaluators into good speakers. If we do this within the next six months our club will become strong. We would have been able to achieve not only a wide variety of good speakers and good evaluators but also good listeners. Walk together to achieve your dreams as time and tide will wait for no man.

CLUB GROWTH DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE It is my pleasure to write a few words for the Kegalle Toastmasters Club Newsletter.

"Smooth seas don't make skillful sailors.", just like the saying Kegalle Toastmasters Club has done something magical during 2020, the year of uncertainty. Within the first six months of the toastmasters year, the club has achieved 9 DCP points, which is not easy, and this shows that the club contains quality and excellence.

While some clubs were struggling to adapt to the online platform during the pandemic time, I admire club members adopting the online platform and continuing the toastmaster's journey.

DIVISION DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE I am humbled to be able to add a few words in the newsletter of Kegalle Toastmasters Club.

My real interaction with the club started with me being invited to join an education meeting as the General Evaluator. What gave away the spirit of the Club is when I was given the brief introductions of the role players, where the usual due recognition was given to each role player.

But the spice came in as each one was also introduced as part of a large family. There were Big Brothers, Sisters, Babies, Mother of the Club,etc. This is what really enthralled me.

Tony Robbins says, "Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.".

So let's set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-based) goals for 2021 and strive to achieve your goals with the same momentum which you had during 2020.

And when you do that, you can grow yourself, and at the same time, you can enjoy the journey.

I wish all the very best for all the Kegalle Toastmasters Club members and looking forward to celebrating your success end of the toastmasters year.

AREA DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE It’s my great pleasure to share my thoughts through the first Newsletter of Kegalle Toastmasters Club, in the toastmasters year 2020/2021.

At the beginning of the year, Area F1 set the goal with the theme of “Grow Together” which focuses on enhancing quality, strengthening membership, and providing more opportunities for our members within and outside the clubs and support each other in the area to grow themselves.

The new leadership of the Kegalle Toastmasters club had the challenge to move the club in the right direction while focusing on the next level of club quality and standards with the achievement of the President's Distinguished status last year. I’m delighted to experience how TM Prarthana and the leadership of Kegalle have driven this club with a splendid effort to achieve numerous goals and milestones.

CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE A leader is completed only when there is a team with spirit and strong bond. I am very much fortunate to be surrounded by one such wonderful team.

I am overwhelmed to add a note in the first ever newsletter of our club, after spending splendid six months of the Toastmasters year,2020/21.

At the beginning of this year, Kegalle Toastmasters put their faith on me as their President and the only intention I had was to give their faith a validity by ensuring the quality standards of both the club and the members which would last not only in this year, but in the coming years also.

Planning and execution goes hand in hands. On the other hand, it must create positive vibes among members to be volunteered to take part in that whole process.

Strengthening membership during the first membership drive of the year, 100% pathways enrollment, the progress of district goals submission, creating many channels of member engagement with fun full events, the performance of members at Area contest were some of the memorable achievements that I witnessed throughout.

Team Kegelle has invested time in planning for the year and executing the plan effectively. As a result of that, they have already achieved 10 DCP points, Smedley award, 8-80 award, and leading the way of CLUB QUALITY AND ENGAGEMENT TRACKER. On the other hand, the way how members of Kegalle are enjoying themselves at every point that they will be connected and working together, reflects the positive culture that supports members to grow with a positive learning experience.

I would wish all the members of the Kegalle Toastmasters Club all the best to achieve the pinnacle of success this year.

That was how the theme of integrity and the concept of family bonding came into our main focuses of this year. Our beloved members also absorbed these focuses and today we call ourselves as “Kegalle Toastmasters Family” which roots for each other to create member satisfaction and enthusiasm.

As a sequence of this member satisfaction and enthusiasm we have been able to create many success stories. Earning DCP 9 points by November,2020 itself while securing the glory of being the second club in District 82 and the first in Division F and Area F1 to achieve the same is only one such success story. We as a family were also blissed with the happy news of being among the top 5 clubs of the District to remark DCP 10 points just before launching this newsletter.

The journey to success cannot be defined by a single face. It is multimodal and we have understood this fact thoroughly. We are on our way endlessly, selflessly and continuously.

It is our immense pleasure to present the very first issue of Kegalle Toastmasters Club Newsletter, "KEGALLE KEEN" to you. The Toastmasters year 2020/21 is giving our club many opportunities to grow as a club while empowering our valuable members in many ways. It is true that the Covid-19 outbreak has created many challenges to everyone's life, but with the enthusiasm of our members and guests, our club has been able to take those positively to step forward. This historical newsletter issue is also one of those steps.

In this issue we have mainly focused on the Club activities, Club achievements and the members achievements of last six months. During this year our main focus is to work as one family to create healthy bonds among members while sustaining the integrity to bring out the quality of the club.

This concept has allowed us to feature as a team, instead of individuals and that has widen our scope to root for each other. That was the reason for many success stories mentioned here and that is why we thought to name this issue as "Let's Root For Each Other".

The same family concept was applied while designing this newsletter. The chief editor was surrounded by a committed panel and we all worked together as one family with the utmost support of the rest of the club members to make this issue a success. Not for this team effort, launching a newsletter for Kegalle Toastmasters Family would have remained a dream.

Finally, We, as the editorial team are very much thankful to our lovely members and our beloved District officers for their selfless contribution not only for the publication of the club Newsletter, but also for the betterment of the club. In fact, these small steps will let Kegalle Toastmasters Family to climb up the ladder.

KEGALLE TOASTMASTERS CLUB - AN OUTLOOK Kegalle Toastmasters Club is an excellent club where a person can reinvent himself. Not only public speaking, but the member will also get to learn time management, organizing, punctuality, prioritizing, and great fun at their meetings. The club now has 28 members and one of the youngest clubs with existed since its charter in June,2017 and is currently under Area F1, Division F, District 82.

Growing the grassroots of a club is not easy.

Developing an identity, strengthening the presence in the community while attracting new members were the main challenges that Kegalle Toastmasters Club had frequently faced. Now the club has overcome those challenges by many implementations.

Joint Meeting With Kandy Toastmasters

The club has conducted 18 vibrant meetings including themed meetings, visiting Toastmasters sessions and 4 joint meetings with Wayamba Toastmasters, Gampaha Lyceum Toastmasters, Kandy Toastmasters and all 4 clubs of Area F1 during last six months. The meetings give the opportunity to build a rapport among the club members and to expose them to various club cultures.

Amidst the COVID 19 pandemic situation Kegalle Toastmasters decided to have online meetings once in every two weeks since March,2020. This initiative began to provide exposure to online platforms and managing online meetings even to the older generation up to recent school leavers while breaking the isolation at the pandemic period.

While retaining the membership but also the new members are welcome to the Kegalle Toastmasters Club because newcomers always provide a fresh breathe and new life into a club.

Kegalle Toastmasters is always visually appealing to the guests and greet them warmly.

An In-person Meeting After 1st Covid Wave With Safe Distance

Kegalle Toastmasters Club pays attention not only to the newcomers, but to the existing members also by providing friendly environment with proper educational programs including pathway adoption, appointing personal mentor, providing special educational sessions and enhancing opportunities like role playing and going beyond the club.

Social media is a powerful tool that Kegalle Toastmasters Club does not want to miss out on because of today’s digital age, the users are more than likely to be hanging out on platforms. The club is keeping a bank of photos, videos, and other content to regularly update on Facebook to standing out and getting those eyeballs to the club activities.

Kegalle Toastmasters always have a plan with customized trackers for members and the club which are aligning with club success plan and they review the progress through executive committee meetings and through Moments of Truth programs with members. These are useful to omit the missing of sparkle and to get back to the basics of excellence. Learning from the mistakes and Improving the lacked areas are the key elements of the club and that has taken the club to a higher extent during last six months as mentioned in Page 12 and 13.

INSTALLATION CEREMONY 2020/2021 The Fourth Installation Ceremony of Kegalle Toastmasters Club was held on 20th September 2020 for the year 2020/2021 at Hotel Sleek, Kegalle with the theme “Let’s Root for Each Other”. This event was vivid with Eco friendly decorations, tokens and the dress code with shades of green.

The ceremony was illuminated by many great figures in District 82 Toastmasters arena including the chief guest, District Director- DTM Noorul Munawwara, Club Growth Director- DTM Nisal Weerakoon, Past District Director- DTM Sarma Mahalingam, District Chief Judge- DTM Zameen M Saleem, Division DirectorDTM Shazuli Raheem, Past Division Director- DTM Ganga Fernando, Assistant Division Director(Club Growth)- TM Saman Walisinghe, Area Director- Area F1 TM Chamil Madusanka and club mentor- TM Padmajith Jinadasa. Not only them, but all the presidents of area F1 also joined hands to make the ceremony more glorious. The keynote speaker, Mr. Malcolm Machado who’s a lawyer and an actor presented an influential speech giving the key message that unity among Sri Lankans matters the most, not racism or ethnicity.

The ceremony was full of various types of events.

Including the main event, New Member Induction and Club Officer Installation, which was conducted by the Area F1 Area Director. New Member Induction happened for the first time in Kegalle Toastmasters history. Some enthusiastic members presented entertaining events as well.

The most fascinating part was the award ceremony. Not only all the educational award winners, but the mentors of club members also were recognized.

BEYOND BOUNDARIES Social media is one of the best platforms to connect with anyone and Kegalle Toastmasters Club has covered it to the fullest even though the club owns only a Facebook page.

On the page, flyers are being uploaded for each and every educational level completions, special life events, regular meetings, etc. Apart from that the usual meeting photographs, outdoor and theme meeting photographs, and all the other special event photographs are separately uploaded to the page.

This year the club launched the ‘They Talk’ project where each member shares his/her gratitude towards Kegalle Toastmasters and the whole Toastmasters fraternity. We expect to launch another project called ‘Mentoring Matters’ in which all the mentors and mentees share gratitude towards their mentor and mentee.

Not only that, Kegalle Toastmasters Family has reached Toastmasters International magazine in August 2020 and District 82 page for the very first time through the ‘My Mentor’ column of magazine in which TM Sonali Subasinghe showed her gratitude towards her first official mentor TM Prarthana Liyanaarachchi.

Kegalle Toastmasters' whole family did not stop at that point. We could feature in Toastmasters International magazine in the month of December, with the group photo which was captured while we visited our mother President’s residence at Higgoda. It is a great pleasure that beloved Kegalle Toastmasters family is getting to the peak day by day, step by step in Toastmasters.

VISIT TO OUR MOTHER PRESIDENT “Beep beep”. A message to Kegalle toastmasters' whatsApp group from our President,TM Prarthana Liynaarachchi. “Guys we have an invitation from TM Padmini for a lunch at her home on 4th July 2020” Wow! An invitation from our mother president. What a joyful news after a hectic time with corona for almost 3 months? In a second all the members started to appreciate and enjoy the news. All were eagerly waiting to meet after a long time to enjoy. Finally, the long-awaited day arrived, July 4th, 2020. Around 8 o'clock we started our journey from Kegalle to TM Padmini’s place with loads of enthusiasm and energy. Although it was started as a normal day, the day was full of surprises as well.

After about an hour’s journey through a beautiful area away from Kegalle town, we arrived at a house in a very peaceful village called Higgoda. We were late than the others thanks to our loving Mr. Driver, TM Chamira who drove the car very slowly. Including myself (TM Deshanie), TM Prarthana, TM Dulani, and TM Ruvindu didn’t get why he was slow. But later we got to know that it was a plan to take time to arrange a surprise. We were warmly welcomed

by TM Padmini and her family members. From the moment we entered the house celebrations started, for the great achievement of our loving President TM Prarthana, as the newly appointed TLI Coordinator for Western Clubs and Assistant Area Director- Club Quality and for the birthday celebration of our birth day boy , TM Ruvindu.

After spending some time with greetings, celebrations, chitchats, photoshoots, and laughter we were ready to meet the great adventure. A wonderful time in Gurugoda Oya. After we arrived at the place we started the photoshoot for the group photo in Gurugoda Oya (Photo on cover page). After the photoshoot adventure, everybody was ready to jump and play in the water. Our photographers TM Sonali, TM Ruvindu, and Sithum (Son of TM Padmini) were very busy capturing different poses. What a great time with jokes, laughter, and playing! The time flew quickly and it was time for lunch. With great effort got everyone on board and went back for lunch. The lunch was full of different mouth watering food items.

Everybody enjoyed the food and hospitality with hearts full of gratitude. After having delicious food and long and small talks, all of a sudden it was the time to leave the place.

With hearts full of gratitude, satisfaction, and beautiful memories we said goodbye to our mother president and her family. It was a blessing to have such a humble, caring, supportive, and strong lady as our mother president who helps us to create beautiful and unforgettable memories in all our hearts forever. We are always grateful for her guidance, support, and leadership not only in our Toastmasters journey but also in our life’s journey.

NEW MEMBERS SPEAK After I entered the world of toastmasters via the Kegalle Toastmasters club, I have experienced a positive change in my life. I understood that this is a place where we can learn and improve yourself not only in public speaking but also our confidence, leadership qualities, communication skills, personality, situation handling, time management, and many more. The friendly and supportive learning environment I experienced inside the KTMC motivated me to join soon with them after first visit as a guest.

Before joining Toastmasters, I was afraid of talking in front of an audience, but after joining Kegalle Toastmasters, now I can talk anywhere with confidence. I’ve become an optimistic person who can face any challenge.

Kegalle Toastmasters Club follows this path helping its members to become the best possible version of them.
