A Glamping Birthday
A glamorous way to host an indoor birthday sleepover.
Birthday Party Guide
All the local resources you need for their big day.
Simple Celebrations
Rather than expensive extravagance, consider these for their special day.
Experts weigh in on the best ways to keep your teens as happy as possible.
Amelia Grace Godfrey (16 months), daughter of Bobby and Aly Godfrey and little sister to Coleman (14)and Winston (13). Grandparents are Kiwon & Sandy Allen, and June & Gordon Godfrey.
Amelia enjoys singing, dancing, and reading her books. She also loves playing and laughing with her brothers and having conversations with Mommy and Daddy.
As I have mentioned many times over the years, I LOVE planning for a special celebration. Be it a holiday dinner, a birthday party, or just friends over to watch a game, I am all in for it. As a self-proclaimed spreadsheet addict, I have Google Sheets filled with “to-dos” and party food lists, complete with links to recipes and, of course, Pinterest boards full of fun ideas. When the girls were younger and it came time to plan their birthdays, I was giddy. We would sit down and pick a theme, plan activities, make homemade decor, and menu plan. Of course, we always had to have a themed cake we would make together. They weren’t always pretty but they were fun!
As the girls got older, the birthday planning conversations changed from two girls chatting excitedly to something like this: “What about a mystery party?” “No, thank you.” “How About the Minute to Win It Challenge? Or a Karaoke Party?” “Mom...” “What about...” “I just want to have some friends sleepover.” “Cool! We can do a glamping theme and make...” “Mom, seriously, I just want a plain, simple party with some friends. No theme, no decorations.”
It was at that moment the Price is Right loser horn played in my head. No theme? No decorations? That is when I realized it was not the “stuff” that made it fun for me; it was the time spent planning with my girls. They were growing up and ready for more independence and I just had to accept it. After all, that’s part of our job as parents, right? Creating independence? Plus, knowing she was getting the celebration she wanted was all that mattered (she told herself as she pitifully closed the Glamping Pinterest tab).
On the positive side, a toned-down party was also so much easier on me! While I do love all of the planning, the execution of it all could be a bit much at times. Maybe, as Ashley Elizabeth shares in her feature “Why Keep Birthdays Simple?”, there are much easier and more fulfilling ways to celebrate than wearing yourself out.
Whether you are planning a full-blown party with all the extras or just a simple gathering of friends, you are sure to find some great ideas in this month’s Birthday Party issue! This issue is filled with party planning ideas, local businesses to help with your special event, and, of course, the annual Birthday Party Resource Directory, which is great to keep on hand all year as you plan your celebrations! In the directory, you will find places to host a party, rental companies, entertainment, and more! Also, if your ears perked up when I mentioned a glamping party earlier, you will want to check out Pam Molnar’s feature, Glamping - A Glamorous Way to Host a Camping-Themed Sleepover
There are always things to celebrate living on the Gulf Coast, and there is no shortage of events celebrating Independence Day this month, so make sure you check out the calendar for a variety of community events. Let’s remember too that we don’t need a birthday or holiday to celebrate life. Grab a cold glass of lemonade and watch the gorgeous sunset as a family, or send a last-minute invite to your neighbors to come over for game night. No frills are needed, just celebrating friendships and fun.

In a world overwhelmed with advice— from social media, grandparents, friends, and more—it can be hard to know what truly matters in parenting. After more than 25 years of experience as both a parent and clinician, I’ve come to believe that nearly all parenting challenges fall into three essential categories.
1. Focus on Task Completion.
Make sure your children follow through with what they’re asked to do.
For younger children, this means using physical, visual, and gestural prompts to guide them. For older children, it means staying present and checking that tasks are completed.
Parents often get sidetracked by a child’s emotional reaction to being asked to do something. When that happens, they either “give in” to avoid conflict or try to control their child’s emotions. Both approaches usually result in emotional and behavioral spirals that are hard
2. Teach Permission-Seeking.
Help your children learn to stop, think, and communicate by teaching them to ask before acting. As soon as they can communicate, they should be expected to ask for what they want or need.
Many parents confuse entitlement with independence. Entitled children grab a snack from the kitchen; independent children ask first and wait for permission.
It’s normal and developmentally appropriate for children to get upset when told “no.” When you hold your ground, you’re building your child’s ability to handle frustration. A child who can effectively communicate wants and needs—and who can accept “no” without falling apart—is well-equipped to succeed in most settings.
3. See Problem Behaviors as Skill Deficits. Most challenging behaviors aren’t signs of deep psychological issues—they’re signs that a skill is missing.
A child who tantrums after losing a game, bosses others around, or throws toys at bed time isn’t broken. They just haven’t learned
how to respond appropriately yet. Your role is to teach them the skills they’ll need to manage life as adults.
For example, a child who always loses their temper when losing a game needs practice. Play games daily. Before starting, act out appropriate ways to respond and let them practice. At first, they may scream or flip the board. But with repetition and support, they’ll learn to express frustration calmly and show sportsmanship.
Avoid tiptoeing around problem behaviors. Instead, lean in and teach the missing skills. Think about learning to write a name—it takes holding a pencil properly, sitting still, and forming letters. These skills are learned one step at a time through repetition and support. Behavior is no different.
When we know better, we do better. Watch for the skill your child lacks, then practice it—consistently—and encourage every effort and improvement.
As a parent, I,too, was swayed by wellmeaning advice and pop psychology. My need for approval, desire for control, and discomfort with my children’s distress often got in the way of giving them what they truly needed.
Please learn from my experience. If you stay kind and honest—and stay focused on these three core areas—you’ll be far more effective in helping your children grow into the people they were meant to be.

The Pensacola Children’s Chorus (PCC) proudly announces that its Executive and Artistic Director, Alex Gartner, has been named the recipient of the prestigious 2025 Louis Botto Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship by Chorus America, the national advocacy and leadership organization for the choral field.
This distinguished award, named in memory of Louis Botto—the founder of one of the world’s leading choirs, Chanticleer—recognizes mid-career conductors who have demonstrated exceptional artistry, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in furthering the mission of their choral organization. Gartner’s selection places him among a celebrated cohort of choral leaders whose work is shaping the future of the choral field. He is the first director of a youth choir to receive this award in its 27-year history.
Since assuming leadership of PCC in 2016, Gartner has transformed the organization into a dynamic, inclusive and visionary force for music education and community engagement. Under his direction, PCC has expanded from its flagship Resident Choir to an impressive 14 distinct choral ensembles, serving a diverse array of young singers across Northwest Florida and Southwest Alabama. His pioneering “Triple-A Commitment” ensures Affordable and Accessible Arts for every child, removing financial barriers to participation through a sliding-scale tuition model.
Gartner’s visionary leadership has brought national and international acclaim to PCC, including performances at Carnegie Hall in 2022 and again under his own baton in 2026. His innovative programming fuses traditional choral repertoire with contemporary and cross-genre works, culminating in their large-scale choral theatre productions. These performances are complemented by over 25 annual community appearances in schools, retirement communities and local events.
Beyond performance, Gartner has embedded PCC in the cultural fabric of Pensacola through continued collaborations with the Pensacola Opera, Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, Ballet Pensacola, Choral Society of Pensacola and Pensacola Little Theatre. Additionally, he forged strategic partnerships with the Escambia Children’s Trust and the City of Pensacola to bring about programs like Sing to Succeed and Pensacola Sings, initiatives which bring tuition-free singing opportunities to under-resourced populations of youth, exemplifying his commitment to using music as a catalyst for social change.
Alex Gartner’s selection for the Louis Botto Award not only recognizes his extraordinary achievements but also shines a spotlight on the Pensacola Children’s Chorus as a national leader in choral innovation, accessibility and youth development. Tate High School recently hosted its 2nd annual FAST Fest, a two-day academic celebration that engaged over 1,000 ninthand tenth-grade students in a dynamic and interactive review of English Language Arts skills in preparation for Florida’s statewide FAST (Florida Assessment of Student Thinking) test.
The event, held on campus, transformed test prep into an exciting experience, thanks to the dedication of 16 enthusiastic teachers and 60 12th-grade student volunteers who led activity stations over the course of 2 days. Each station offered standards-based games, skill-building challenges, and opportunities for students to earn prizes—all designed to reinforce key English concepts in a fun, low-stress environment.
“FAST Fest was created to help students feel confident and ready for the FAST test, and it exceeded our expectations,” said the event’s organizer, Tate High School teacher Kristin Maum. “Not only did students enjoy themselves, but we’ve already seen measurable learning gains, with many students improving their scores from last year—some showing double-digit growth.”
Student feedback following the test echoed the event’s success. Many participants described FAST Fest as “fun” and said it “definitely helped” them perform better. One student said, “The hands-on activities really helped my memory recall for the test.” The combination of game-based learning and supportive teacher involvement proved to be both effective and inspiring.
FAST Fest is a shining example of how innovation in education can foster academic achievement while making learning enjoyable. Tate High School is proud of the hard work of its faculty and the enthusiasm of its students, and looks forward to continuing the success of FAST Fest next year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida is proud to announce sixteen local students enrolled in our mentoring programs have qualified for scholarships, providing vital support as they take the next step toward higher education. These scholarships are made possible through a remarkable partnership between Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), Florida Prepaid College Foundation and our Florida Big Brothers Big Sisters Association. In 2023, FPL partnered with the Foundation to contribute $4.2 million in scholarships for students from some of Florida’s most underprivileged areas. This initiative will provide 1,000 students with two-year scholarships over four years. FPL’s $2.1 million contribution was matched by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation, representing the largest single investment in the Path to Prosperity Scholarship Program since its start in 2021. This statewide initiative, supported by the Florida Chamber Foundation, focuses on combating childhood poverty by expanding access to higher education.
The Florida Prepaid College Foundation and Florida Chamber Foundation partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters Association of Florida and other organizations to identify deserving students. B ig Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida supported local high school participants throughout the application process, and this year, sixteen were selected to receive this incredible opportunity. These recipients can use their scholarships at Florida’s public colleges and universities, as well as technical and vocational schools. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Florida Power & Light Company for their continued investment in Florida’s youth and their unwavering support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida.
Creative Learning Academy’s Rock Band Camp hit all the right notes this past month, bringing together rising 2nd through 8th graders for a week of high-energy musicmaking and fun. Led by the CLA’s very own Mrs. Abigail Walker and Mr. Mac Jones, campers had
the chance to dive into the world of rock and roll, learning to play drums, ukulele, guitar, bass, and keyboards - even if they’d never picked up an instrument before!
The camp’s “School of Rock” vibe gave everyone a chance to perform, whether they were seasoned musicians or total beginners.
Throughout the week, Rock Band Camp was slightly frenetic, as students formed their own bands, tapped into classic rock tunes, and held “jam sessions”. Mrs. Walker’s hands-on approach made learning music engaging, encouraging campers to experiment with different instruments and discover their own musical strengths. The highlight for many was the chance to perform together live, creating real rock band music for the very first time.
The response from Rock Band campers was incredibly positive, focusing on the fun, friendships, and new skills they gained. Parents really appreciated the supportive, creative environment that made everyone feel like a rock star. Rock Band Camp was a huge hit, and we can’t wait to see what next summer brings for our future musicians at Camp CLA!

If your child loves the idea of camping but doesn’t want to battle the bugs, the elements, or sleep on the hard ground, then glamping is a great alternative. It allows you to enjoy the great outdoors while surrounded by the comforts of home. Glampers can even set up their camp indoors for nights
2. Shabby Chic Blankets - Purchase two twin-sized sheets from the thrift store. Prewash and lay them on top of each other, matching the edge. Cut about 4” from the edge of the fabric in 2” wide strips all the way around. Tie together to form a twosided blanket.
– Kits are available online on Amazon or Oriental Trading with everything you need to make a dream catcher. While kits include beads and feathers, you might want to offer other decoration options like ribbons, strips of fabric or dried flowers.
Conversation starters - Prewrite conversation starter questions on smooth rocks and add them to a fancy jar or vase. Have the guests take turns pulling them out and reading the question out loud.
lawn dice by decorating same-sized square boxes. To keep up with your Boho theme, you can decorate the dice in vintage wrapping paper and add the dots with solid colored paper. Make each girl a score sheet from an online printable or keep everyone’s score on poster boards nearby.
– Check online for an outdoor scavenger hunt list or make your own. When the sun goes down, you can also do a glowstick hunt around the yard. Assign each guest or team a color for an added
corn, beans, meat and avocados. Seal foil and cook 4-5” from fire for 10 minutes or until cheese melts.
2. For your main meal, warm up mugs of tomato soup and make grilled cheese paninis. Offer the guests cheese options and add-ons like bacon, avocado, tomatoes, and spinach.
3. Chocolate fondue is an alternative to birthday cake. Use strawberries, bananas, pound cake, or marshmallows for dippers.
4. For breakfast the next morning, let the kids make cinnamon rolls on a stick. Use kabob sticks (presoaked in water) to secure the rolls and let them cook slowly (about 15 minutes) over the low heat of a firepit. Drizzle with icing and serve with a fruit cup.
Choose a great kid-friendly camp movie to end the night. If you are screening the movie outside of the Glampground, try filling an inflatable pool with blankets and pillows for a cozy viewing setup. Camp movie ideas might include Parent Trap, Camp Rock, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 or The Great Outdoors.
An easy glamping goody bag is filled with all the fixing for s’mores –chocolate bar, Teddy Grahams and marshmallows. Add a simple note that says, “Life is s’more fun with friends like you”. You can also fill a dollar store cinch bag with travelsized items like toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, makeup removers and lip balm.
For an easy appetizer or movie snack, make campfire nachos. Fill individual foil packets with nacho chips, cheese, tomatoes,
Community and creativity are what comes to mind after talking with Temera Strather. She is a wife, mother to young kids, and small business owner. She is passionate about creating experiences for those around her, whether it be an ordinary day or an important celebration.
Temera and her husband Jonathan are high school sweethearts going on 12 years of marriage. He is in IT, serving in the US Navy.
“In our early years of marriage, we had a little apartment and a tub of games. Every day, I’d be waiting at home with a new board game ready to play when John got off duty,” Temera reminisced. “This grew into a love for throwing a good game night with friends and family. Being a military family, we’ve made some unbreakable connections and it’s just so beautiful to have such an extended family.”
Together, Jonathan and Temera have two children - Kali (6) and Jamari (4). Kali is spunky and creative, just like her mother. She loves being outside and can tell you all the interesting facts about animals, bugs, and nature. She enjoys school, arts and crafts, dancing, and tumbling. Jamari, on the other hand, just earned himself the nickname ‘Jamario’ because he has a newfound love for the Nintendo character Mario. He also enjoys being outside and is very silly.
“We love to go to the beach and, of course, play board games,” Temera said. “I think our all-time favorite thing to do as a family right now is have an indoor movie night. Our go-to snack for that is a fresh bag of AMC popcorn EXTRA butter and s’mores!”
The family has full days of work and school, but they always eat dinner together.
“We do eat out a bit, but will also do a quick Publix run to put dinner together! We eat around the kitchen table, and cooking is pretty split in half,” said Temera. “I’ll be honest; my husband has been doing more cooking than me lately since I started my business. We’ve grilled out 4 weekends in a row this month! He’s really perfected his ribs on the smoker.”
Temera recently opened the doors to her own business called ‘A Sweet Party’. She says that many people think she is a bakery, but actually, she is a venue and creative studio offering everything from creative play to children’s camps and workshops to fun-themed parties.
“I love putting together fun parties and seeing the joy on kids’ faces while they create beautiful things,” she shared.
Kali’s favorite meal that Temera makes is a quick weeknight lasagna. It is affordable, and dinner can be on the table in under an hour. They usually enjoy it with a side of corn on the cob or broccoli and buttery rolls.

By Ashley Elizabeth
Over the past decade, children’s birthday celebrations in America have seen a significant shift towards more elaborate and costly events. A study by Everyday Health Group revealed that parents now spend an average of nearly $314 on their child’s birthday party, excluding gifts. This figure underscores the growing trend of hosting extravagant, Instagram-worthy celebrations that often rival weddings in scale and splendor. This trend is driven by a desire to provide memorable experiences and perhaps a sense of competition or societal pressure to host standout events.
However, this move towards grandi osity has sparked discussions about the true essence of birthday celebrations. Many parents are beginning to question the necessity of such extravagance, con sidering the financial strain and the poten tial loss of genuine, heartfelt celebration. Ultimately, the goal is to make your child feel seen, loved, and celebrated in a man ner that aligns with your family’s values and resources.
Embracing simpler celebrations can alleviate stress and financial burden, allowing both parents and children to enjoy the occasion fully. Maybe all three of your kids have summer birthdays, like mine. Maybe you have five (or more!) kids, and you want them to feel special without turning your home into a never-ending birthday party war zone.
Let’s make 2025 the year we ditch the “post-worthy” birthday performances and refocus on what actually matters: celebrating our kids in ways that fill their hearts (without emptying our wallets or sanity reserves). Here are some unique, stress-free birthday ideas that honor your child without overwhelming you.
1. Choose an Experience Over a Party.
Instead of hosting a big party, create memories with a meaningful experience. One friend woke his son at sunrise, drove to Legoland for the day, and returned home as the sun set. It wasn’t extravagant—just cost him tickets and gas—but spending one-on-one time made it unforgettable. If time or money is tight, a simple outing can still feel special. For my son’s birthday, we took him to a free bike park—his happy place. Doing the thing he loved most with his family enjoying it alongside him, filled his cup more than any party could.
2. Throw ONE big party.
We’ve done this for the past three years, and my kids love it. We rent a bounce house (just once a year), bake a
big cake, cook lots of food, and invite every member of the family and everyone’s friends for one big celebration. Each child wears the number of their new age, and when we sing “Happy Birthday,” we include all their names. It’s perfect for our homeschooling family—our kids share friends, and our guests only need to come to one party, not four. We ask guests not to bring gifts, and we give our kids presents on their actual birthdays.
3. Let Them Choose a Special Outing with a Friend.
Instead of inviting the whole class to an expensive trampoline park, let your child choose one or two close friends for a special day tailored just for them. Growing up, my best friend’s mom worked at a hotel, so we spent her birthday lounging by the pool—effortless yet unforgettable. For a quieter, cozier option, host a doll or stuffed animal tea party with just a few friends. Picture little ones in fancy dresses, sipping tea with their beloved plush companions—adorable, intimate, and refreshingly stressfree. If your son is more of an adventurer, skip the party chaos and take him and his best buddies fishing at the lake—no sisters allowed. The goal isn’t extravagance, but creating moments they’ll cherish forever (and ones you won’t need to prepare for weeks to do).
4. Make It About Their Favorite Things.
Birthday parties are a modern invention. In many cultures and throughout history, individual birthday celebrations weren’t the norm. If the goal is to make your child feel special, let them pick the day’s meals or desserts. I love cooking my kids’ favorite dishes all day and adding little touches—like a banner over the table or candles at dinner—to make even a simple family meal feel like a celebration. Do they love trucks or horses? Add those embellishments to the decor, if you feel like making it extra fancy.
5. Have a ‘Yes Day’. Give your child a day where (within reason) they get to make the choices. From picking meals to choosing activities, let them take the lead. Maybe they want to have a pancake breakfast in pajamas, go on a nature walk, or build forts in the living room. A Yes Day is a simple yet powerful way to make them feel special and celebrated.
6. Create a Memory-Making Opportunity. Make birthdays about story telling and reflection. Have family members write notes, draw pictures, or share favorite memories about the birthday child. Collect them in a scrapbook so they can look back on years of love and celebration.
Over the past decade, the pressure to throw extravagant, Instagram-worthy birthday parties has skyrocketed, with parents now spending an average of $314 per celebration—excluding gifts. While lavish themes and big venues may create picture-per fect moments, they often come at the cost of financial strain and unnecessary stress. But here’s the good news: your child doesn’t need a five-tier cake or a petting zoo to feel celebrated. At the end of the day, birthdays should be about joy, connection, and honoring the beautiful person your child is becoming. Wheth er it’s a simple backyard festival, a Yes Day where they call the shots, or a cozy scrapbook tradition filled with heartfelt memories, the best celebrations aren’t the ones that impress social media— they’re the ones that leave your child feeling deeply loved. And that’s a gift no amount of money can buy.

Elio
Overwhelmed by the death of his parents, Elio doesn’t feel like he belongs anywhere. In desperation he decides that he wants to be abducted by aliens – and when his dream comes true and he lands in the Communiverse, he finds himself negotiating with violent would-be conquerors, befriending an eyeless, wormlike alien, and learning lessons about honesty, loyalty, courage, self-sacrifice, and family. Original, heartwarming, and beautifully animated, this Pixar production also features dazzling visual design. Parents will enjoy this movie along with their kids.

Scorned by the fierce Vikings of Berk, Hiccup wants to prove himself by killing a dragon. Then he injures one and winds up befriending the creature who he names Toothless. This unlikely pair will change the lives of both the dragons and people of Berk. A live action reboot of a 2010 animated film, this production is competently made and despite being considerably longer is well paced. The plot is compelling, the actors capable, and the jokes funny. Throw in numerous positive messages and it’s a win for family movie night.
Orphaned young, Lilo is cared for by her frazzled big sister, Nani. Then their lives are upended by an alien who crash lands on earth, bringing mayhem, laughter, and a new perspective on family. A live action remake, this version sheds the charm of the original animated film, while amping up the annoyance factor. Plot changes are pointless and Inexplicably for Disney, the digital animation quality is uneven - a rookie mistake for a legendary studio That said, kids will still enjoy the zany action.
After his brother’s death, Li promises his mother that he’ll give up kung fu. But when they move from China to New York, Li learns that he might need to master karate to defend his honor – and his new girlfriend’s family. Luckily, Li’s shifu from Beijing is able to persuade Daniel LaRusso to help him learn from both martial arts traditions. Well cast, tightly plotted, and delivering themes of courage and selfrespect, this family-friendly flick is a solid reboot of the classic original film. Photo ©Sony Pictures
When his grandson is diagnosed with a brain tumor, Joe has only one way to earn the hundreds and thousands of dollars needed for his medical care: returning to the sport that nearly killed him. Can he stay on a raging bull for long enough to save Cody’s life? Intense themes make this movie too scary for little ones, but it’s a competent, sincere underdog sports flick with strong messages about love, courage, commitment, persistence, and resilience. Genre fans will approve. Photo ©Angel Studios
Q. How do you feel about moving credit card balances to other companies to get lower rates when you’re trying to get out of debt? I just paid off my first credit card, and a friend suggested this idea for paying off the others faster.
A. Lots of people think they’ve really done something big to solve their debt problems when they do this. And I’m sure your friend is trying to help with this suggestion, but you’ve got to remember that getting out of debt, and gaining control of your finances, is all about changing the habits of the person you see in the mirror every day. You’ve got to make a commitment to a lifestyle change that includes getting out of debt, staying out of debt, and sticking to a written, monthly
budget. That includes keeping track of every, single dollar, giving it a job to do and living on less than you make.
Now, your friend’s idea might help speed up the process a tiny bit. But the habits that got you into debt in the first place won’t change just because you’ve switched credit card companies. What you’re talking about is an easy way to lower the interest rates—temporarily, in most cases—but it doesn’t change your everyday behavior with money.
When people have problems with debt, it’s often the result of dumb financial choices and living above their means. I’ve run into
so many folks who got into trouble with money just because they wanted to impress other people. But guess what? When you change, interest rates don’t matter nearly as much. And when you shift your mindset about money, it will make a huge difference in a way that changing credit card companies and chasing lower interest rates can’t.
I hope this helps. And take a look at my Baby Steps plan while you’re at it. I promise, if you follow those steps, it will help you move forward, get ahead and put you on the road to a debt-free life and financial peace!
To parents of teens, the title of this article may seem surprising. Teens and happiness? What could that possibly mean? Teens often walk around with a sullen demeanor, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There’s a lot that parents can do to help their teens stay happy – at least most of the time!
Here’s what the experts suggest:
Teens spend their time and energy worrying about how they look to others, especially friends. But too much introspection doesn’t really make anyone happy. Happy teens are those that are able to look beyond themselves and engage with others. One of the best things you can do for your teens is encourage them to take up extracurricular activities like art and crafts, music, or sports. “Extracurricular activities,” says Kaela Scott, a well-known therapist, “create structure and research has shown that those involved in these activities have higher self-esteem.” Simply put, participating in extracurricular activities make teens feel good about themselves.
Teens are even happier when they’re doing something meaning ful for others instead of just hanging out with others. As educational psychologist Dr. Michelle Borba, the author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World and many other parenting books, puts it: “Kids are happier when they give to others, not when they get for themselves.” Encourage your teens to look for volunteer opportunities like coaching a little league baseball team or being a companion to elderly people in an assisted living facility.
Another thing that makes teens happy is when parents treat them as friends and not just as kids. Teens need you to guide them into adulthood and to teach them how to make good choices, but they also need you to be there for them as people that they can trust and confide in. “Teens crave the security of knowing their parents understand them, appreciate them, and love them no matter what,” says clinical psychologist Dr. Laura Markham, author of Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids. “So they do want the relationship to be a form of friendship.”
To be a genuine friend to your teens, listen carefully to what they share with you and try not to judge them. “Teens want to feel heard but don’t necessarily want advice,” says developmental psychologist Jessica Cleary. “Validating their experience without judgment will result in your teen confiding in you more often, bringing you closer together.” For example, if they tell you about a problem they’re having with a close friend, don’t try to come up with a solution to the issue right away. Show them that you understand what they’re going through, assure them that it’s a common experience, and recount similar experiences you had as a teen.
To raise happy teens, you need to be happy yourself. “When you’re in an emotionally generous mood,” Dr. Markham says, “everything changes: You’re patient, you’re warm, you’re giving, and your kid blossoms.” Conversely, she says, “if you’re in a bad mood, what unfolds with your kid is going to be tense, they’re going to act out to get your attention, they’re going to be anxious, they’ll begin to echo your tone of voice.” So, do things that make you really happy. It’s good for you – and for your teens.

“Kristi was here.” The age-old signature pre digital age that we all scribbled (insert your name of course) in yearbooks, bathroom stalls, or carved into trees — it was more than just a scribble. It was a small, silent act of claiming space, of making a mark that said, “I was here, I existed, I was part of something.” For kids growing up before the digital age, leaving a signature was a tangible, lasting gesture. It was a moment of connection, however fleeting, that made you feel seen. It was personal and immediate — a hand touched a wall, a pen touched paper, and that small act carried weight because it was real, imperfect, human. If you were lucky enough to pen your signature onto your crush’s arm, that floating, excited feeling could last for days.
Fast forward to today, and that signature has gone digital. Now, kids leave their mark online—an “instant” comment, a like, an emoji, a post. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it reaches a lot of people. But it’s also less personal, less human. Gone are the mornings of flipping through yearbooks and stopping to trace a name
or a message that carried the weight of their moment in time. Now, a “like” or a quick emoji reaction is supposed to carry the same meaning, but it often falls flat. It’s a fleeting notation, a digital scribble in a sea of thousands, easily erased or ignored with a swipe. The sense of permanence has shifted—what once was a deliberate act of claiming space now often feels impersonal, almost disposable. And therein lies the quiet, pensive truth. That childhood ritual of marking your presence with a signature, while imperfect and sometimes rebellious, was a form of human connection. It was a tactile, shared experience—one that fostered a sense of belonging. You could see it, touch it, and know that it was real. When you wrote “Kristi was here” on a bathroom stall, you hoped someone might see it someday, smile, or even respond. When you carved your initials into a tree, it meant you had left a part of yourself behind, forever, in a place you loved.
Today’s digital signatures lack that physical intimacy. They are often disconnected from the tangible interac -
tions that make us human. The post, comment, or emoji is quick, transient, and often stripped of the messy, beautiful imperfections of real life. It’s hard to feel the weight of a moment when your marker is a tap on a screen. The sense of permanence is blurred by the endless scroll, the temporary nature of a trending meme, or the viral wave of an impulsive comment.
Maybe that’s why so many of us feel a quiet nostalgia for the days of real signatures—those small acts of connection that required effort, intention, and presence. Because beneath all the digital noise, what we yearn for is authenticity. The slow, meaningful process of leaving one’s mark—whether in ink or in human connection—that says, “I was here,” and, more importantly, that someone else was truly there with you.
Our signatures may have changed, but our need to be seen and connected remains. Perhaps the challenge isn’t in trying to make online signatures mean the same—but in remembering that true connection is still rooted in the authentic, imperfect, human touch.
