Happy New Year! There’s something magical about turning the calendar page—suddenly, we all get the irresistible urge to reorganize closets, buy new planners, or at least pretend we’re going to. Whether your resolutions are ambitious, simple, or still a work in progress, I hope your year is off to a bright and energized start.

The new year brings a burst of excitement—and stress—because it means it’s time to start gearing up for 2026–27 school registrations! That’s right: the school year is only about halfway through, and yet it’s already time to plan for the next one. Whether your student is taking their very first steps into kindergarten or changing schools, now is the moment to gather information, schedule tours, and submit applications or registrations. Fortunately, there is no shortage of wonderful school options in our area if your zoned school isn’t the right fit. To help you get a jump-start on your search, we’ve compiled a comprehensive listing of area school options in the 2026 Education Guide.

As I mentioned, we still have four and a half more months in this school year, and motivation can sometimes start to wane around this time. The good news is that while adults use the new year to hit the restart button, students can do the same.

This mid-year moment is one of the best times to reset, refresh, and refocus. It’s also a great opportunity to talk as a family about new habits, including healthy study habits and productive routines. They don’t have to be complicated—simple, steady strategies can help kids feel confident and capable. Of course, the new year is also famous for inspiring goal-setting, and kids are natural goal-makers. Whether it’s “read 20 books,” “learn how to multiply,” “make the soccer team,” or “finally keep my backpack clean for more than two days,” setting goals helps students take ownership of their learning. As parents and educators, we can guide them in creating goals that are specific, realistic, and meaningful. And don’t forget to celebrate progress—not just perfection! A sticker chart, a high-five at the door, or a quick family check-in can turn goal-setting into something fun instead of stressful. As we look ahead to another exciting year of learning, discovery, and growth, I hope you and your family feel encouraged and inspired. The beginning of a new year can be challenging with New Year’s resolutions and busy schedules, but it’s also a beautiful reminder of the journey we’re all on together—from our tiniest kindergarteners to our most seasoned seniors. Be kind to yourself, and remember: progress over perfection.

* Respond with Calm and Empathy: If your child acts out, focus on the behavior, not the child’s identity. Stay calm, name feelings, and follow through on your expectations and boundaries. This keeps communication respectful and maintains their dignity.

Why Communication Matters When I was in college, one of my favorite courses was Nonverbal Communication because I learned that 55% of communication is body language, 38% is tone of voice, and only 7% is spoken words. This knowledge helped me fully understand that our communication with our children is far beyond words alone. Our tone, body language, timing, and emotional openness all matter.

Here are some helpful principles to follow as you communicate in every way with your children.

Active Listening and Being Fully Present Let your child know they have your full attention. That means stopping other activities, making eye contact, getting down to their level if needed, and listening without interrupting. When you reflect what they say, it shows you truly care about understanding them.

Empathy and Validation All of us struggle with naming big emotions. As a parent, acknowledging your child’s feelings and becoming curious rather than dismissing them builds emotional safety. Over time, this helps children learn how to develop the ability to express emotions in a healthy manner.

Clarity Give clear expectations rather than vague commands. When you need to correct behavior, discuss the behavior without shaming your child. For example: “I don’t like it when toys are left out,” rather than “You’re always messy.”

Consistency, Honesty, and Follow-Through. Trust is built over time when your words match your actions. If you promise to listen or respond, follow through. If you set expectations, enforce them consistently.

When we send mixed messages like a harsh tone with kind words, we can cause frustration, confusion, and undermine the trust our children place in us.

* Model What You Want To See: Use “I” and “we” statements (“I feel worried when ...” rather than “You always...”), be honest about your feelings in an ageappropriate way, and show your children that expressing emotions is normal and healthy. All emotions are welcome, but not all behavior is. A gentle tone, a hug, eye contact, or a calm posture can communicate empathy, love, and respect.

The simple gift of our presence is often more powerful than a lecture. Children learn not only from what you say, but from how you show up for them and for others. * Make Time for Fun: Some of the strongest bonds are formed in relaxed, joyful settings. Conversations during play or shared activities often flow more naturally than in “serious talk” mode.

Sunken Treasures, Ancient Seas: Artifacts from the Deep

King Cake-Off

Join us for the History Museums new exhibit Sunken Treasures, Ancient Seas: Artifacts from the Deep from January 23-May 10, 2026. This unique and educational exhibition explores the fascinating underwater world of archaeology as it is practiced today.

Shipwrecks and the means and methods to retrieve ancient artifacts, buried treasures and historical evidence are the protagonists of a multi element exhibition.

A special focus is given to the Mediterranean Sea and traces of the ancient civilizations that flourished in the region.

According to one UN inventory, along these shores, some 1,255 underwater archaeological coastal sites have been identified.

Developed in collaboration with Italy’s leading underwater research organization, the Soprintendenza del Mare of Palermo, a selection of the submerged landscapes that surround the island of Sicily and the Italian coastline are brought to life through the use of various exhibition devices.

Modern video capabilities transport the visitor deep below the surface on a voyage of discovery and recovery. Original artifacts testify to past civilizations, while modern equipment and illustrations recount the stories of their rediscovery, excavation and restoration.

Signature Academy Showcase

Each January, MCPSS hosts the Signature Academy Showcase, which is a “one stop shop” for parents and students of seventh- and eighth-graders to decide which of our 12 high schools is right for them. (It is also recommended for ninth-graders at Barton and Clark-Shaw). Parents and students can meet with representatives and students from each school. Representatives from the Career-Tech Centers, Augusta Evans Special School, Student Support Services, Athletics, and Special-Education are there to answer questions as well. 2025-2026 Poetry Out Loud Competition Registration Open Now

Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies. The Mobile, Alabama program involves a FREE Find Your Voice Workshop in January, followed by the Region 1 Recitation Competition the following week. Winners at the Regional Level will advance to the Statewide Competition, who may advance to the National Competition.

The Region 1 Poetry Out Loud workshop will be January 24th, 2026 at the Ben May Main Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Only currently enrolled students in grades 9-12 are eligible, with an exception made for 8th-grade students participating in a 9th through 12th-grade class. A student may not advance to the state finals without competing in a lower-level competition. The deadline to register for the 2025-2026 Poetry Out Loud Region 1 Competition is January 24th, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. There will be an opportunity to register for the competition at this workshop.

Understanding Childhood Stress As a pediatrician, I often meet parents who sense something is off with their child but can’t quite identify what’s changed. Stress in children can be difficult to spot because it rarely looks like the stress adults experience.

Kids usually don’t say, “I feel overwhelmed.”

Instead, they communicate physically and behaviorally, often in subtle ways.

One of the earliest signs of stress is a shift in physical symptoms. These can appear as stomachaches, headaches, nausea, or difficulty sleeping. When exams and labs return normal, parents understandably feel confused. It can be helpful to track the timing of symptoms. If they consistently appear around school mornings, transitions, or busy periods, stress may be the underlying cause.

It’s helpful to remember that stress in young children often has specific triggers.

Major changes—even positive ones—can feel destabilizing. A new sibling can introduce excitement but also uncertainty as routines shift

and parental attention is redistributed. Family changes such as divorce, a parent traveling more than usual, or new childcare arrangements can also create a sense of insecurity.

Moves to new homes, switching schools, or even simply transitioning to a new class or teacher can feel overwhelming to a child who thrives on predictability. Young children rely heavily on routine, so even small disruptions may temporarily raise their stress levels.

Behavioral changes offer additional clues. Irritability is one of the most overlooked signs. Adults often associate stress with worry or sadness, but many children express it through frustration, emotional outbursts, or disproportionate reactions to minor problems.

If a typically flexible child suddenly becomes rigid, argumentative, or easily overwhelmed, it may reflect a stretched emotional capacity.

Stress can also show up as regression.

A school-age child may suddenly ask to sleep in your bed again. A previously toilet-trained

preschooler may begin having accidents. A confident child may suddenly fear separation at school drop-off. Regression doesn’t mean something is wrong with the child; it often means they are seeking reassurance while navigating internal stress.

Despite this reality, fortunately, children are remarkably resilient. Parents can help by offering consistent routines or slowing down overscheduled days. It can be helpful to make one-on-one time a priority, and, for children who lack the ability, to assist with verbal expression. If concerning changes last several weeks or more drastically disrupt daily life, a pediatrician can help guide the next steps.

LaShondra Herrine Chastang Fournier K-8 School

LaShondra Herrine has been teaching 2nd grade at Chastang Fournier K-8 School for just two years.

However, she is already making a significant impact.

“I nominated Ms. Herrine as MBP Teacher of the Month because her dedication and willingness to help her students is awesome to watch, and the sacrifices she makes to ensure they have her full attention and the resources to succeed are unmatched,” shared Jillesa Edwards, a long-time friend. “Her passion for teaching and children creates a safe space for their learning and development.”

For 15 years, Ms. Herrine worked as a daycare teacher, caring for babies and toddlers. While she loved her job, she ultimately felt a calling to do something greater.

“I felt like I could help shape the minds of young children and I wanted a challenge, so I decided to become a teacher,” she shared. “This has been my dream since 2013. I had to step out on faith and believe I could do what I was called to do.”

Armed with a blackboard and textbooks, Ms. Herrine believes that the best way to educate her

students isn’t through smart boards or complicated math but rather through an “old school way” of teaching and real-world connections that keep them engaged. Her greatest reward comes from verbal praise—not only from teacher to student but also from teacher to parents. She prioritizes informing guardians about their child’s growth and milestones.

“When I was in 12th grade, my teachers prepared me for the real world,” Ms. Herrine reminisced. “The way they cared about me and made sure I had the skills and knowledge to succeed in life really impacted me. This is why I became a teacher—I knew one day I would get the chance to give back by pouring love and nurturing others as they did for me.”

LaShondra Herrine earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Faulkner University in Mobile. She also plans to pursue a Master’s in Elementary Education soon. When she isn’t teaching, LaShondra enjoys shopping, making delicious salads, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. She also enjoys attending sporting events and staying productive in life.

HCA Entrepreneurship Class Hosts Holiday Market During Thanksgiving Luncheon

Heartwood Christian Academy’s Entrepreneurship Class, led by Mrs. Shelly Kirk, added a festive and creative touch to this year’s Thanksgiving Luncheon by hosting a charming Holiday Market filled with student-made products and small business displays.

As part of the class’s hands-on learning experience, students were challenged to design, create, market, and sell their own items, giving them real-world insight into product development, pricing, customer service, and small-business management. The result was a lively marketplace showcasing the talent, imagination, and dedication of HCA’s young entrepreneurs.

Guests at the luncheon enjoyed exploring a vibrant selection of handcrafted items, including: Beaded bracelets and handcrafted jewelry, Vivid felt flowers, Crocheted items and coasters, Ornaments, holiday décor, and other creative crafts, Small art pieces and student-designed displays.

Several students from other classes also participated, contributing their own creative products and adding to the cheerful, bustling atmosphere. Together, the students created a festive treat for eager shoppers, making it a memorable highlight of the luncheon.

The market provided a real platform for students to practice communication skills, interact with customers, and confidently showcase their work. Families and staff members enjoyed watching students take on entrepreneurial roles, many for the first time, witnessing the joy and pride each student brought to their displays.

The Entrepreneurship Class did an outstanding job, and HCA celebrates their initiative, teamwork, and dedication in bringing this special marketplace to life.

Each day featured a different theme — students showed their spirit by being team players, “socking it” to drugs, tipping their hats to a drug-free lifestyle, “lei-ing” back from drugs, and ending the week by being You-Nique and drug-free in their Halloween costumes. Our kindergarteners added extra excitement by dressing up as community helpers and sharing what they learned about how these important workers keep us safe. CTS staff joined in the fun all week long, showing support for healthy, drug-free choices. A special thank you to our Red Ribbon Leader, Albert Pavelescu, for helping make this week such a success!

St. Nicholas Helpers at Little Flower Catholic School

HCA’s Archery Team Shines

Since the Feast of St. Nicholas fell on a Saturday this year, students at Little Flower Catholic School celebrated his feast day one day early. St. Nicholas had helpers who left treats for every student. Lessons were shared in the classrooms about the good that St. Nicholas did for the poor in his town so many years ago.

The Heartwood Christian Academy Archery Team delivered an exceptional performance at the Semmes Middle School “Nocked and Locked” 3-D and Bullseye Tournaments, securing top rankings, multiple personal bests, and two impressive team awards.

The Lions competed with focus, determination, and sportsmanship, representing HCA with excellence. They are gaining momentum early in the season, and their accomplishments showcase the heart, resilience, and teamwork that characterize Heartwood Christian Academy.

We are extremely proud of these athletes and grateful for their dedication and sportsmanship.

Covenant Scholars Bowl Teams Open Season With Strong Performances

The Covenant Christian Scholars Bowl teams are off to an exciting start this season, competing in two early matches against Cottage Hill and Faith Academy. What is Scholars Bowl? Scholars Bowl is an academic quiz competition in which students compete head-to-head by answering “toss-up” questions covering a wide range of subjects—history, science, literature, math, current events, fine arts, and more.

Players must think quickly, respond accurately, and work as a team to earn points across multiple fast-paced rounds. It’s a lively, competitive way for students to showcase their knowledge and sharpen critical-thinking skills.

This season, Covenant’s teams have already made impressive strides. On the A Team, Emilia W. leads with 70 toss-up points. On the B Team, Ray S. leads with 90 toss-up points.

Newcomers Charlie D., Aidan B., and Sam G. have also jumped in with toss-up points in match play, making valuable contributions early in their Scholars Bowl careers. Both the A and B Teams have secured one win each so far, demonstrating strong potential as the season progresses. The “A Team” will take on St. Luke’s in their next matchup. Go Eagles!

Fourth grader Lyric represented Corpus Christi beautifully at the USS Alabama Battleship Veterans Day Ceremony after earning 3rd place in the Parade of Flags Essay Contest for the Mobile County School District!

She even received some inspiring words from Azalea Trail Maid and Corpus Christi alum Lydia Stokes.

Our kindergarten and first-grade students had an unforgettable day when the incredible team from the Environmental Studies Center visited Council Traditional School. The excitement was off the charts as students met some amazing animal ambassadors up close — including an opossum, a diamondback terrapin, a corn snake, a red-tailed hawk, a great horned owl, and even a three-week-old baby alligator. A huge thank you to the ESC for bringing the wild world to our school and sparking curiosity in our youngest learners.

John Wesley Holt Legacy Run

Spend the day celebrating the life of John Wesley Holt with a 5K course and Fun Run beginning and ending at St. Luke’s Episcopal School in Mobile, Alabama. Both 5K and Fun Run are available to both runners and walkers! All proceeds from the 4JWH Run support the John Wesley Holt Scholarship Fund, which was established in memory of John Wesley Holt, Class of 2021. John Wesley tragically lost his life in a hit and run accident on February 18th, 2023. John Wesley was an Eagle Scout and a sophomore electrical engineering major at the University of South Alabama. To honor his memory, the Holt family has established the John Wesley Holt Legacy Scholarship awarded annually to a St. Luke’s senior who has shown the same passion and dedication that John Wesley exemplified in all parts of his life: Character, Academics, and Athletics. John Wesley Holt, an Uncommon Man. An annual John Wesley Holt Legacy Run will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal School to remember the many lives that John Wesley impacted. Pre-registration for the John Wesley Holt Legacy Run ENDS, Wednesday, February 5 at midnight.

Saraland High School’s annual Career Day featured more than 40 professionals representing fields such as athletic training, engineering, piloting, marine biology, and respiratory therapy. Career Day provides students with real-world connections, exposure to diverse career options, and inspiration for their future paths.

Council Honors Veterans Through Art

Students at Council Traditional School celebrated Veterans Day by creating meaningful artwork to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. In addition to their artistic tributes, our 4th grade students proudly led the Parade of Flags at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park on Veterans Day, representing Council Traditional School with patriotism and pride. We are also thrilled to congratulate 4th grader Patricia Cushman for earning 2nd place in the Mobile County Public School System Veterans Day Essay Contest. Patricia’s thoughtful essay earned her a $150 gift card, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishment.

Covenant Middle School Basketball: Building Character On and Off the Court

This season, Covenant Middle School Basketball is embracing a clear mission built on three core team pillars: teamwork, attitude, and effort.

These foundational values guide everything the boys do—from their daily practices to how they carry themselves during competition.

“Our players have been working hard and truly learning what it means to live out these attributes as we learn the game of basketball,” the coaching staff shared. “Basketball is merely a vehicle to teach our young men life lessons. Covenant Basketball players know that academics come before anything that happens on the court.”

The team’s approach is rooted in growth, discipline, and personal responsibility. Each practice focuses on improving not only skills and game knowledge but also character and leadership. Coach Hii emphasizes getting a little better every day and approaching each challenge with integrity and resilience.

“I am excited about what the future holds for our young men,” the coach added. “This group is truly special—if you don’t believe me, come watch us play.” Covenant Basketball also continues to invest in future athletes through the Youth Development League (YDL) for 3rd–6th graders, which focuses on building strong fundamentals, fostering a love for the game, and preparing younger students to step confidently into the middle school program.

Coach John Hii was recently named Covenant Christian’s Athletic Director. He excels in fostering inclusivity, teamwork, and a positive culture among student-athletes. His leadership goes far beyond the court—he brings the broader school community together with a strong sense of school pride and unity. We are grateful for his vision and encouragement to students and families.

Grandparent’s Day Fun at St. Ignatius

St. Ignatius welcomed 500 grandparents to Mass, classroom visits and a warm reception recently. Students were asked to write about what they would do with their grandparents if they were to babysit them for a day. Father Shields, pastor, had the congregation in merriment as he shared some of the student’s submissions during his Homily. Here are a few memorable ones: I would take my grandparents to Old Dutch and then home for a nap. I would tell them if they ate their broccoli, I’d take them to Surge after. I would take them to Disney World and let them ride as many rides as they wanted. Or, as Gaines Callaway (pictured below) shared, he would turn on “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd and jam out in the car since it is his grandmother’s favorite song. Students all made gifts for their grandparents and enjoyed donuts together after Mass. It was a sweet day for both grandparent and grandchild alike.

8th Is Great At St. Ignatius!

One of the distinguishing features of a K–8 school is the abundance of leadership opportunities to which twelve- to thirteen-yearold students are exposed.

As eighthgrade campus leaders, students experience numerous benefits.

Eighth-grade students are distinguished by a blue blazer; earn leadership pins to adorn their blazers throughout the year; lead the campus in service projects; enjoy the privilege of multiple overnight field trips and retreats; and—one of the most coveted opportunities—demonstrate their skills in the Eighth-Grade Games. Students have the opportunity to challenge their parents in volleyball, basketball, and kickball, and the resulting spirit is unparalleled. Real referees are brought in, uniforms are worn, and the competition is fierce. The St. Ignatius Class of 2026 defeated the parents in both volleyball and basketball. They have truly set a precedent for the Class of 2027 to continue this tradition of excellence. Congratulations to the eighth-grade students!

MAEF Public Charter Schools Receive First “B” from State Report Card

MAEF Public Charter Schools (MPCS), commonly known as ACCEL Academy announced a major performance milestone following the release of the 20242025 Alabama State Report Card by the Alabama State Department of Education. For the 2024-25 academic year the district achieved an 80 (B) grade, reflecting a 38% improvement and three-letter-grade increase from its 2022–2023 grade. MPCS leaders attribute their “B” grade and accelerating improvements to a comprehensive transformation plan launched in the summer of 2023. The plan included an organizational restructuring, the onboarding of new leadership, educators and staff, and the deployment of best-in-class instructional practices. All elements of the transformation plan supported the core objective of improving organizational performance and scholar outcomes.

“At ACCEL, our customer-driven mindset is uniquely ingrained across our leadership, educator and staff teams. School customers – students and their families – are often not the priority in certain education environments, so in the summer of 2023, our mantra became a “Relentless Focus on Our Customer,” said Jordan Jones, Chairman of the MPCS Board of Directors.“Our positive trajectory reflected by the state Report Card validates the effectiveness of our relentless mindset, focus on classroom fundamentals and our unwavering belief in the capabilities of our scholars. Santa visited St. Dominic Catholic School at the annual Christmas dance sponsored by the Student Council.

St. Luke’s 8th Grade Students Explore Through Hands-On Dissection in Medical Detectives Class

Our middle school students participated in a hands-on learning experience by dissecting sheep brains, which are structurally and functionally very similar to the human brain. This engaging lab allowed students to explore the structure and function of the brain up close, reinforcing their study of the nervous system in a meaningful and memorable way. We love seeing our students dive into science with such curiosity and enthusiasm!

St. Mary’s Catholic School Students Study Financial Literacy

St. Mary’s Catholic School middle schoolers are putting real-world skills into action in Mrs. Arensberg’s SEL class through a Consumer Education Project that connects financial literacy and gratitude!

So far, students have calculated their (pretend) annual and monthly income after taxes and learned how to budget for groceries—discovering just how quickly expenses add up!

This ongoing project will continue over the next several weeks as students learn additional real-world budgeting and life skills, helping them gain perspective, appreciate the value of hard work, and practice gratitude for the things their families provide.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year at E.R. Dickson

Christmas came early for a group of “Littles” at E.R. Dickson Elementary, as New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson brought gifts for them through a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Gulf Coast. Joining her to greet the students were Saints mascot Sir Saint, Pelicans mascot Pierre T. Pelican, and two members of the Saints Cheer Krewe. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Gulf Coast provides mentorship, goal setting, and life long relationships with students. It was because of the generous heart of Ms. Benson that each child received a bag full of toys and experienced a day full of joy that they will never forget!

Public Speaking Is Prioritized at St. Ignatius

St. Ignatius forms leaders in mind, body, and spirit.

One method of formation is the development of public speaking skills. Public speaking is a foundational life skill that significantly enhances students’ capacity for effective leadership.

This skill is practiced in the classroom; during Mass; at school performances; in service projects; and every day during school announcements. Students voluntarily sign up to lead morning announcements and do an excellent job shepherding the herd of Impalas each day.

St. Ignatius prioritizes this formation beginning in the 2K program, making volunteering for morning announcements in later grades a positive opportunity rather than something to be feared. Special recognition to these two Impalas who frequently sign up for morning announcements and do an amazing job: Elizabeth Rigrish and Louise Clarke.

MGM Assistant Principal Brenda Box is State’s Assistant Principal of the Year

Mary G. Montgomery High School Assistant Principal Brenda Box has been selected as the Alabama Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP) Assistant Principal of the Year. The MGM Vikings surprised her with the announcement at a special assembly and pep rally in the school gym, with Lonnie Parsons of the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners among the special guests. This is a once-in-a-lifetime recognition, and we are very excited and proud of her,” said Principal David Diaz.

MGM has played a big role in Box’s life since she was a teenager. She graduated from MGM and attended the University of Mobile on a softball scholarship. She taught and coached at the school and worked her way up to assistant principal. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education, a master’s degree in instructional leadership, and an education specialist degree. She is now in her 21st year on the staff at MGM. AASSP is an affiliate association of the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS). As the 2025-2026 AASSP High School Assistant Principal of the Year, Box will be recognized in Washington, D.C., as part of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) High School Assistant Principal of the Year program. There, the Alabama winner will join other state winners from across the country and compete for the title of National High School Assistant Principal of the Year, showcasing the exceptional leadership and impact of Alabama’s school administrators on a national stage. Box is one of four MCPSS administrators to earn district awards from the AASSP and the Alabama Association of Middle School Principals (AAMSP). They include Leroy Jones of Booker T. Washington Middle, the AAMSP Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year; Tiffany Buchanan of Vigor High, the AASSP/AAMSP’s High School Principal of the Year; and Rashad Stallworth of Scarborough Model Middle School, AASSP/AAMSP’s Middle School Principal of the Year.

Our precious K5 students kicked off the season with the sweetest Thanksgiving program— complete with songs, prayers, and plenty of enthusiastic wobbles and gobbles. When my daughter turned 15, she had outgrown summer camps but wasn’t yet old enough to work at most places, which required a minimum age of 16. Since she loves learning and is highly independent, we started researching college summer programs for high school students. As far as I know, these programs didn’t exist when I was growing up, so I had to start from scratch—researching their offerings and determining which one would be the best fit. She was eager to enroll in a program about 45 minutes from where we live, but when the pandemic hit, she was unable to attend. Even though she didn’t go, I can share what I learned so you can hopefully find the right program for your teen.

What is a summer college program for high school students?

“College summer programs offer high school students an incredible opportunity to explore academic interests, experience campus life, and build essential skills, like independence,” says Marc Zawel, the co-founder and CEO of AcceptU. A summer college program for high school students, typically referred to as a pre-college program, is when a high school student enrolls in classes at a college or a university. Programs can range from one week to seven weeks. Students can either live on campus, commute, or take classes online.

“These programs essentially allow students to ‘test-drive’ college. Beyond academics, they help teens prepare for the challenges of higher education in a supportive environment,” says Zawel.

What do you do in pre-college programs?

In addition to enrolling in a college course, most programs also offer social activities. This may include field trips to explore the local area or classic camp-style activities like talent shows and arts and crafts.

When do you sign up for pre-college programs?

Most pre-college programs have March deadlines, so you should have your selection finalized by then. Applications may also have age requirements, GPA minimums, fees, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays. The process is similar to applying to college as a high school senior, though it’s generally easier to be accepted. Some programs are open enrollment, meaning anyone who applies is accepted.

Where are pre-college programs offered?

You’ll find pre-college programs are available at most colleges across the U.S., including private and public schools. If you opt to be a resident, you will live in the same college dorm rooms that college students typically live in.

How much do summer college programs for high school students cost?

It’s not cheap! The cost varies depending on the length of enrollment, which ranges from one to seven weeks, and whether you choose to live on campus. Most residential programs cost between $4,000 and $15,000. But there are some federally funded programs that are free or inexpensive, such as Upward Bound Program and The National Conference of Governor’s Schools.

How do you select a pre-college program?

Choosing a pre-college summer program is like selecting a college as a high school senior. Students should consider their interests, location, and cost to determine which program is the best fit.

Some programs, like those offered at the University of Delaware, provide options to commute or attend online, with costs around $1,000-$2,000.

Will you receive college credit at pre-college programs?

It depends on the program. Some offer college credit and typically last four to seven weeks, while non-credit programs are usually around two weeks long. For example, George Washington University offers a two-week non-credit class referred to as “Summer Immersion.” They also offer a six-week program where students can earn college credits and is referred to as “College Intensive.”

Will enrolling in a pre-college summer program help you get into that college?

Attending a pre-college summer program is unlikely to significantly increase a high school student’s chance of being accepted there. However, it can help the student determine if the school is a good fit and provide valuable experiences to craft a more targeted personal essay when they apply.

“Participating in a summer program can strengthen a student’s college application by supporting their academic area of interest and demonstrating intellectual curiosity,” says Zawel. “Attending a program at a specific college can help a student show admissions officers why that school is a particularly good fit, given their previous experience on campus.”

What are some benefits of a pre-college program?

In addition to experiencing college life, students will have the opportunity to meet professors, explore their academic interests for a potential major, and develop independence—especially if they choose to live on campus. They can also enhance their social skills by connecting with other teens and learning how to live with others.

These experiences will help ease their transition to college when the time comes.

Words Matter

What Our Kids Are Learning I work with families and kids every single day. I hear their stories...the heartbreak, the confusion, and the quiet moments when they say, “I just don’t know why people are so mean.” I’ve sat in those still, sacred spaces while children have cried from sadness and fear. I’ve spoken with parents who have lost their children to bullying. And in so many cases, it all started with words.

Lately, I can’t help but think about what our children are watching and hearing. The tone, the language, and the public examples being set by adults, especially those in positions of authority, are louder than we realize. Whether we want to believe it or not, kids are paying attention.

They listen to what adults say and how we say it. And when people in power resort to insults, name-calling, or intimidation, they’re not just expressing frustration --they’re modeling behavior. And our kids are watching every. single. second. of. It. So how are we supposed to talk to our teens about kindness, empathy, and resilience when so many adults are normalizing the opposite?

I say it in every school assembly and youth conference: Words have power. They shape how we see ourselves and others. They build culture. Children learn that culture from us. Every word we speak, post, or shout in anger teaches something about how power is used. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that verbal aggression has the same longterm emotional impact as physical bullying.

The brain processes social rejection and humiliation in the same regions that register physical pain. In other words, when some-

one is demeaned or mocked, their body reacts as if they’ve been hit. Words bruise.

They just don’t always leave visible marks.

I know this firsthand. From the age of two until thirteen, I experienced daily verbal abuse. The words left deeper wounds than any physical harm ever could. That’s why I am passionate about helping parents and educators teach children that being verbally abusive is not normal — and it’s not okay.

The reality is that bullying doesn’t start in middle school hallways; it starts long before that. Studies show that children exposed to demeaning communication by adults are far more likely to mirror that behavior. They grow into adults who use the same tactics.

Sometimes as parents, sometimes as leaders. When adults use intimidation or mockery, children internalize it as a model for how power works. Children learn that empathy is optional. That’s not leadership. That’s insecurity disguised as authority.

Then throw social media into the mix.

Our kids are growing up in a world where cruelty can be broadcast, shared, and amplified in seconds. Pew Research reports that nearly 60% of teens have experienced online harassment. I believe the number is even higher. I ask students in every presentation what they think the biggest problem with social media is — and their answer has been the same for twelve years: cyberbullying. What truly breaks my heart is that many of them have stopped speaking up.

“Everyone talks like that,” they say. Cruelty has become normal. When adults use bullying language, online or offline, they validate that culture. They teach kids that 33

cruelty is entertainment, that humiliation is a punchline, and that tearing others down is a form of power. But it’s not. That’s not leadership. That’s cowardice.

So what is the real impact? Words can kill. Victims of online harassment are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.

Mockery can turn into tragedy. Language can fuel hate crimes, normalize violence, and destroy empathy. Every time an adult belittles another human being, kids are learning that empathy is optional. We cannot afford that lesson — not now, not ever.

What can we do? Our kids deserve better examples. They deserve leaders.

In homes, classrooms, and communities.

Leaders who lift others up instead of tearing them down. Real power isn’t proven by who we silence but by who we support.

So yes, I’m frustrated. Maybe a bit angry. Angry that I have to keep writing about this. Angry that cruelty has become casual.

Angry that kids are scrolling through the chaos of adult behavior online and wondering if kindness still matters.

It does.And it starts with us.

Let’s teach our children through how we speak, how we post, and how we lead that strength is kindness, that respect is power, and that real leadership never needs to bully to be heard.

“Take out your number two pencils.” Again. Your child probably hears this phrase often. A study by the Council of the Great City Schools found that a typical student takes an average of 112 mandated standardized tests between pre-K and graduation.

The results of these tests are taken very seriously by educators, parents, and administrators.

Sometimes they even affect a child’s future placement in school. While our children have more academic opportunities than ever before, they also have more demands.

“Pressure by parents and schools to achieve top scores has created stress levels - beginning as early as elementary school - that are so high that some educators regard it as a health epidemic,” says Denice Clark, author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids.

Yet, as schools continue to raise the academic bar, few offer instruction on how to effectively study for tests. Luckily, parents can encourage these important skills at home.

Engaged Learning and Efficient Note Taking Improves Scores: Jay Klusky, Ph.D., author of Easy A’s: Winning the School Game, says active learning involves only two things: “getting information into your head and getting it back out again.”

Without the ability to comprehend and then retain what is being taught, your child will likely miss key information.

Experts say that kids can train themselves to actively watch for clues about the information that may appear on a test.

Parenting coach Ronit Baras says most teachers drop hints about what might be on the test. Some hints may be obvious, like your teacher telling you, “Pay attention to this because it will be on your exam.” Some will be less obvious, such as the repetition of stressed information in lectures and on homework.

Another necessary skill for high test scores is active note-taking, which enhances memorization. Using a recall column can make this process easier. Draw a light vertical line about 3 or 4 inches from the left margin. The right side of the line is for lecture or reading notes. After class, the student should digest, extract, and record key information into the left recall column while the topic is still fresh.

As the test approaches, use the recall column to make flashcards or invent sample test questions for key points. (Students who prefer to do this electronically can use websites like Quizlet or Canva.)

Experts suggest a loose-leaf notebook for upper-grade students so they can easily remove pages or change the order. The process would be the same for students too young to have lecture notes. They would just use any information provided by their teacher or in books.

Repetitive, Scheduled Studying Increases Confidence: As test dates approach, many students experience anxiety or dread. As a student pulls out all of his notes, homework, and textbooks, he sometimes becomes overwhelmed or discouraged. Make the process more manageable by encouraging him to break down relevant information into smaller pieces that can be reviewed a little each day.

Klusky says one key to effective studying is to review material actively rather than passively, a practice he calls “active encoding.” With this method, the student digests the information and then turns it into something else entirely.

Examples include teaching someone else what you’ve learned and reworking information into your own words. “Instead of just highlighting and going over your material repeatedly, try to really memorize it by asking questions that demand you pull the information back out of your head again,” he explains.

Experts agree that it is far better to study for shorter periods over more days than it is to cram a significant amount of study time into a limited number of sessions. It is usually beneficial to tackle difficult topics first.

Rotate a combination of various active exercises, such as reviewing old homework for future test topics, working with flashcards, and answering your own essay questions. Remember that practice increases confidence.

Test-Taking Tricks: Arm your student with a watch, several sharpened pencils (if the test isn’t digital), spare batteries for calculators, and a positive attitude. Remind him that he is well-prepared and can use the test as an opportunity to show off his hard work.

Studies show that children who use relaxation techniques do better on tests. Teach your child deep breathing and encourage him to use this skill if he starts to tense up.

Encourage your student to do the following on any test: 1. Carefully but quickly read each set of questions twice to ensure he understands what’s being asked of him. If not, immediately ask for help.

2. Scan the test for any sections that are worth more points. Complete those first.

3. Finish the easiest questions in each section first, saving the time-consuming for last.

Achieving success in any activity means learning, fine-tuning, and finally mastering the skills involved. Studying is no different than learning a new sport or musical instrument. Yet, children often receive more help with their fastball than with preparing for the exams that could impact their futures.

Level the playing field by encouraging your child to practice active study and testing habits. Set a start date and an end date. Kids often need quick wins, so shorter time frames are great. Have young kids go for a few days and build up to a week. Older kids and tweens can go longer stretches, but usually no more than a month. Offering quick wins gives them confidence and momentum to stick with it.

ful, not just for the sake of goals but for our sanity. I want my kids to get off their screens, clean their rooms, and clean the house top to bottom for me (too much?)

While we may not get the whole house cleaned for us, we can help them find success with the one thing that always helps: do it together.

Kids have a hard time saying no when mom or dad sits down to play cards with them or challenges them to race to the mailbox. Even a contest to make your bed the fastest motivates kids to do the work.

Interaction is a surefire way to help kids make progress on their goals.

How to Handle Setbacks

None of us wants to believe there will be setbacks in goal setting. The whole point is moving forward. But perfection isn’t realistic. There will be days when things don’t go perfectly. The key is how you handle it. Three ways to handle a setback: • One missed opportunity isn’t a failure.

Give grace and keep going.

• Losing steam feels frustrating. Look back at the progress they made.

The Key to Rewards

If the satisfaction of a clean room was enough of a motivator, I wouldn’t have three books, a random recipe cut out from a magazine, and a screwdriver on my nightstand. We need a reward to motivate us to keep going to the finish line. Kids need that too.

Before kids even start working on a new goal, decide how they will celebrate at the end of the time frame.

Will it be going out for ice cream or watching a favorite movie? Maybe a campout in the living room or a trip to the bookstore? What about an extra story at bedtime?

Whatever reward you give, make sure it doesn’t undo the hard work your

child has done. The reward should be clear at the beginning and it should be finite. Having ice cream every night now that your child is eating more veggies doesn’t support the goal.

The reward is a singular experience to celebrate the progress they made.

To make your child’s goal-setting successful, consider how your child will track their progress and work toward an appropriate reward that is motivating and works for you. For most kids, the reward needs to be right away to associate it with their hard work.

After a week of making their bed, day 7 gets the extra story.

When they have walked the dog twice a week for a month, a walk to the ice cream shop is on day 30.

time, there’s this little ache knowing how fast it’s all going. I don’t know if you ever feel fully “ready” for the empty nest, but I’m trying to focus on gratitude and be present instead of rushing through a season we won’t get back.

MBP: Do you and your partner divide household and parenting duties differently than you did years ago?

KB: Not really. Our roles are fairly established at this point. We’re pretty practical about it—we both do what needs to be done. Some weeks I’m doing more, some weeks he is, and we both jump in where the other needs help. It’s less about keeping score and more about keeping our house (and sanity) running. The kids have also picked up some household duties, which is great!

MBP: How do you stay connected with kids who are more independent (and often very busy)?

MBP: What’s one thing about parenting older kids that surprised you compared to the early years?

KB: Family dinner is really important to us, so we try to all sit down together as much as we can. It’s a great time to reconnect and talk about our day. Some nights are crazier than others, but we always try to squeeze in a little time together.

KB: One thing that really surprised me is how much I enjoy our conversations. When they were little, everything felt so hands-on.

Now I get to see their personalities, opinions, and humor in a whole new way, and it’s honestly one of my favorite parts of parenting.

MBP: How do you handle giving them freedom while still setting boundaries?

KB: We try to give our kids as much freedom as possible, while still keeping clear boundaries. It’s about finding that balance between allowing them to make their own decisions and giving them guidance to stay on track. We’ve learned to trust them more as they get older, but there are still certain expectations and rules we stick to, like curfews, chores, and open communication. It’s a work in progress, but having those boundaries in place helps them feel supported and gives us peace of mind as they navigate more independence.

MBP: How would you describe your family dynamic now that your kids are more independent?

KB: Even though life is busy and everyone’s running in different directions, we’re in a stage of life with a little more breathing room. We still make time together and stay in the loop on what’s going on in each other’s worlds.

Summer is really our family time.

My in-laws have a house on Mobile Bay, and you can pretty much count on us being there as soon as school is out. It’s our happy place.

MBP: What’s one thing you wish you knew when your kids were little?

MBP: How have you and your spouse navigated parenting as a team through different stages?

KB: It might sound cliché, but how fast the time goes really hits home.

When you’re in the thick of raising three kids under five, it’s all about surviving each day, and you don’t always get to appreciate the little moments. Now that my kids are older, I make a conscious effort to pause and soak in these times. You really must cherish every moment!

KB: We’ve tried to stay on the same page by communicating and adjusting as we go. Unfortunately, parenting does not come with a handbook, so what may have worked when they were little doesn’t necessarily work now.

MBP: What changes have you noticed in your marriage now that the kids are older?

KB: We love finding a good Netflix show to binge and enjoying a great meal together—nothing fancy, just time to slow down and hang out. Every fall, we also take a trip with just the two of us. It helps us stay connected in the middle of the chaos of raising teenagers. We know that one day the house will be quiet again, and it’ll be just us, so we’re trying to keep “us” a priority now.

Kelli Beckmann and her husband, Paul, just celebrated their 19th wedding anniversary this past November. Together they have three kids — Thomas (17), Grace (14), and James (13). They also have a golden doodle they rescued named Rosie.

Paul is a partner at Hand Arendall Harrison Sale Attorneys Office, and she works full-time for Petra RMS, a local insurance agency that focuses on employee benefits.

For fun, Kelli is pretty simple; she enjoys a walk and a great podcast. This is her reset button in the middle of those busy days. Beyond that, her kids are truly her favorite “hobby” right now. MBP: How are you dealing with the empty nest moments now, and how are you preparing for the real “empty nest” coming up in the next 10 years?
