Happy New Year! There’s something magical about turning the calendar page—suddenly, we all get the irresistible urge to reorganize closets, buy new planners, or at least pretend we’re going to.

Whether your resolutions are ambitious, simple, or still a work in progress, I hope your year is off to a bright and energized start.

The new year brings a mix of excitement and stress as families begin gearing up for 2026–27 school registrations. Even though the current school year is only halfway through, planning for the next one is already underway. Whether your child is taking their first steps into kindergarten, transitioning to a new school, or in need of extra academic support, the January Education Issue is packed with helpful resources. Fortunately, our area offers a wide range of outstanding schools and educational support services. To help you get a head start, we’ve compiled a comprehensive listing of local schools, tutors, and educational therapies in the 2026 Education Guide.

As I mentioned, we still have four and a half more months in this school year, and motivation can sometimes start to wane around this time. The good news is that while adults use the new year to hit the restart button, students can do the same.

This mid-year moment is one of the best times to reset, refresh, and refocus. It’s also a great opportunity to talk as a family about new habits, including healthy study habits and productive routines. They don’t have to be complicated—simple, steady strategies can help kids feel confident and capable. For help getting started, flip over to Shannon Dean’s feature, “Study Strategies and Testing Tips: Simple Ways to Sharpen Study Skills and Boost Test Scores.”

Of course, the new year is also famous for inspiring goal-setting, and kids are natural goal-makers. Whether it’s “read 20 books,” “learn how to multiply,” “make the soccer team,” or “finally keep my backpack clean for more than two days,” setting goals helps students take ownership of their learning. As parents and educators, we can guide them in creating goals that are specific, realistic, and meaningful. And don’t forget to celebrate progress—not just perfection! A sticker chart, a high-five at the door, or a quick family check-in can turn goal-setting into something fun instead of stressful. As we look ahead to another exciting year of learning, discovery, and growth, I hope you and your family feel encouraged and inspired. The beginning of a new year can be challenging with New Year’s resolutions and busy schedules, but it’s also a beautiful reminder of the journey we’re all on together—from our tiniest kindergarteners to our most seasoned seniors. Be kind to yourself, and remember: progress over perfection.

* Respond with Calm and Empathy: If your child acts out, focus on the behavior, not the child’s identity. Stay calm, name feelings, and follow through on your expectations and boundaries. This keeps communication respectful and maintains their dignity.

Why Communication Matters When I was in college, one of my favorite courses was Nonverbal Communication because I learned that 55% of communication is body language, 38% is tone of voice, and only 7% is spoken words. This knowledge helped me fully understand that our communication with our children is far beyond words alone. Our tone, body language, timing, and emotional openness all matter.

Here are some helpful principles to follow as you communicate in every way with your children.

Active Listening and Being Fully Present Let your child know they have your full attention. That means stopping other activities, making eye contact, getting down to their level if needed, and listening without interrupting. When you reflect what they say, it shows you truly care about understanding them.

Empathy and Validation All of us struggle with naming big emotions. As a parent, acknowledging your child’s feelings and becoming curious rather than dismissing them builds emotional safety. Over time, this helps children learn how to develop the ability to express emotions in a healthy manner.

Clarity Give clear expectations rather than vague commands. When you need to correct behavior, discuss the behavior without shaming your child. For example: “I don’t like it when toys are left out,” rather than “You’re always messy.”

Consistency, Honesty, and Follow-Through. Trust is built over time when your words match your actions. If you promise to listen or respond, follow through. If you set expectations, enforce them consistently.

When we send mixed messages like a harsh tone with kind words, we can cause frustration, confusion, and undermine the trust our children place in us.

* Model What You Want To See: Use “I” and “we” statements (“I feel worried when ...” rather than “You always...”), be honest about your feelings in an ageappropriate way, and show your children that expressing emotions is normal and healthy. All emotions are welcome, but not all behavior is. A gentle tone, a hug, eye contact, or a calm posture can communicate empathy, love, and respect.

The simple gift of our presence is often more powerful than a lecture. Children learn not only from what you say, but from how you show up for them and for others. * Make Time for Fun: Some of the strongest bonds are formed in relaxed, joyful settings. Conversations during play or shared activities often flow more naturally than in “serious talk” mode.

Demonstrating exceptional commitment, Ariadne manages advanced placement courses alongside 18 hours of training at Mobile Ballet, transitioning to virtual school for the daytime program. She finds joy in this demanding schedule; the scholarship guarantees her continued access to this core training.

Ariadne’s passion shines beyond the studio; she actively dances in her living room (dog interruptions aside) and lives for the pre-performance warm-up thrill. Maggie Grow W.J. Carroll Intermediate School

“I teach 4th grade because I believe this is the year students begin to see who they can become,” shared Maggie Grow, who is in her fourth year of teaching and third year at W.J. Carroll Intermediate School. “I want to be a teacher who encourages them, challenges them, and helps them discover their strengths. Watching them take risks, solve problems, and celebrate their successes reminds me every day why this job is such a blessing.”

Mrs. Grow earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Mobile and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Elementary Education from the University of West Alabama. She works hard to balance teaching and personal life by staying organized and setting boundaries. She prioritizes rest and time with her family.

“My faith is the foundation of why I became a teacher. I believe God called me to this work so I can be a light in my students’ lives and someone who encourages them, sees their worth, and reflects kindness and love each day,” Mrs. Grow shared. “Teaching gives me the chance to live out the purpose God placed on my heart: to guide, support, and inspire children in a way that honors Him.” Energetic, engaging, and student-focused would be how Mrs. Grow describes her teaching style. She works to develop hands-on lessons that make learning memorable in her classroom.

“Whether it’s through games, discussions, movement, or creative activities, I work to make each day fun and meaningful. When students are excited, involved, and able to relate the content to their own experiences, the learning sticks, and that’s what I aim for every day,” she shared.

The most challenging aspect of teaching so far is saying goodbye to her students after spending the entire year cultivating a family atmosphere in the classroom. This makes the most rewarding aspect of teaching the exact opposite. Mrs. Grow loves when her former students stop by and share how their lives were impacted positively.

“To me, relationships are the heart of teaching.

From the very first day, I work to create more than just a classroom, but I strive to build a family where every student feels seen, valued, and loved. Knowing each child personally allows me to support them not only academically but emotionally and to celebrate their unique gifts every day,” shared Mrs. Grow. “I am truly humbled and blessed to receive this award. This recognition isn’t just mine. It reflects the hard work, love, and support of my wonderful students and their amazing parents, who inspire me every single day.”

Maggie Grow and her husband, Trent, have been married for three years. They have a son named Gunnar (2). As a family, they enjoy spending time together and with their extended families, going to church, visiting the beach, fishing, and hunting.

BCBE Board Recognizes Spanish Fort High Volleyball Team

The BCBE Board recognized the Spanish Fort High School Volleyball Team who won the 2025 6A Volleyball Championship! If you think that sounds familiar, it’s because they won it last year too! Back-to-back state titles for these young ladies! We also have to give a big congrats to Head Coach Gretchen Boykin who was named the 2025 AVCA Girls High School Region 3 Coach of the Year. Coach Milam is also a part of the leadership for the team. Congrats ladies!

Bayside Kindergarten Students Enjoy a Christmas Surprise

Bayside Academy kindergarten students thought they were celebrating a Christmas pajama day on Friday, December 12, but instead, their parents met them on the Bluff for a Christmas surprise! Families celebrated Christmas together with breakfast, hot cocoa, carols, and family gingerbread signs.

St. Michael Catholic High Students Selected for Honor Band

Seven St. Michael Catholic High students were selected for the University of South Alabama Marching Honor Band. Addison Pratt, Emily Bastian,Grace Campbell, Sam Johnson, Alex Dominguez, Ellis Navarre and Eli Navarre represented us well at the event Saturday, November 22nd. Grady Christian was also selected but was unable to attend. Way to go, Cardinals!

Foley Middle Wrestler Places 3rd

Gresham Thrasher took 3rd place for Foley Wrestling at the JH Gulf Coast Clash! Several other middle school students wrestled and did great. We are proud of you!

Swift Consolidated Club Day

It is everyone’s favorite day, Club Day! Students participated in all kinds of fun activities from crocheting to robotics! The students have so much fun.

Student Spotlight from the Art Room at FMS

Anthony’s School Joins the WonderED Learning Network

Students in Mr. Johnson’s art class were challenged to design the official 2025 Christmas card for FMS to send out this holiday season. With so many creative and talented entries, the competition was fierce.

Congratulations to 7th grader - Sophia Isbell, who was named runner-up for her fun and festive Grinchthemed Christmas card. Sophia received a $10 Chick-fil-A gift card for her outstanding work.

A special congratulations goes to 8th graderVictoria Fondren, whose Santa Winter Wonderland design was selected as the winning card. Victoria was presented with a $25 Visa gift card.

Daphne Middle Students Place in Shrimp Festival Art Contest

Two Daphne Middle School 8th graders placed in the Youth for Art Contest sponsored by the Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores. Jack Howat placed 3rd, and Annalyn Looney placed 2nd in the middle school division. They both received a ribbon and a monetary award. Along with the Shrimp Festival committee members and winners is Mr. Edwards, the principal, and Mrs. Bittinger, the art teacher.

Fairhope West Elementary Spreads Holiday Treats and Cheer

Thank you to our FWE community for sending in items to make goodie bags for our local nursing home residents. FWE Choir, Peer Helpers & Student Anchor Teams delivered 72 bags as Christmas treats to each resident of Fairhope Health and Rehab.

St. James Episcopal School Advent Service

Our first chapel service of Advent was extra special this year with a surprise visit from St. Nicholas! Our wonderful second graders assisted Mother Amanda by lighting the Advent wreath, reading Scripture, and leading the congregation in song. Bay Minette Middle Spelling Bee

We couldn’t bee-lieve the talent at this year’s BMMS Spelling Bee! Our students were un-bee-lievably brilliant, our judges were the bee’s knees, and a huge congratu-beelations to our champion, Vergil Keith —he truly earned the bee crown! Abigail Fowler was our 2nd place winner.

impacting his overall development. His doctors determined his best treatment option was a bone marrow transplant, and luckily Anders found his match and received his transplant. Now Anders is reaching new developmental milestones and is starting to get back to being a normal kid.

Bayshore Christian School Students are Super 7

Bayshore Christian School proudly announces that senior Allie McTaggart and sophomore Henry Barber have been named to the 2025 Southwest Alabama Regional Teams, also known as the “Super 7.”

Allie’s outstanding season earned her the additional honor of Coastal Runner of the Year, recognizing her as one of the top cross country athletes in the region. Henry’s performance also earned him a place among the elite Super 7 athletes.

We give thanks to God for the talents, discipline, and determination He has blessed these Eagles with. Their hard work, sportsmanship, and commitment to excellence reflect His glory both on and off the course.

Seven Bayside Academy Seniors Sign Letters of Intent

On Monday, December 8, Bayside Academy had seven seniors sign letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. The signing day was postponed from the December 4th national signing day due to several of these athletes competing in the state championship football game on that day.

BCHS Theatre Win State!

Our BCHS Theatre students have won STATE! They participated at the State Trumbauer Theatre Festival at UAB. Our one-act play, THE LAST MILE, received “Best in Show” and will be advancing to SETC (the Southeastern Theatre Conference) in March in Chattanooga. This is an enormous honor for our students and our program, and we are beyond grateful and excited for what’s ahead! Congratulations - we are so proud of y’all. Go Tigers!

Local High Cheerleader Named All American

St. Michael Catholic High Swim Team Shines at State

Matthew Kroll from Robertsdale High School and Brianna Harris from Daphne were selected as All Americans at UCA cheer camp this summer and spent a week in Hawaii to represent In the Pearl Harbor parade.

Over the Thanksgiving Break, St. Michael Catholic High girls swim team competed in The State Meet. The 200 yard medley relay won third and broke a school record with a time of 2:00.65 minutes! Sara Garlock broke the school record in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 0:58.99 seconds and placed 5th in the state!

Spanish Fort Elementary Student Accepted into STEM Program

Spanish Fort Elementary School is incredibly proud to share that Kauri Buxton was nominated by Mrs. Knapp, STEAM Coach at Spanish Fort Elementary, and has been accepted into the NYLF Pathways to STEM summer program!

This summer, Kauri will attend the program at Emory University, where she’ll have the unique opportunity to build a robot, investigate a mock crime scene, and explore the medical field through hands-on activities that mirror real doctor training.

Bayside Academy Lights the Trees for the Holiday Season

On Tuesday, December 2, Bayside Academy held its 5th annual Lighting of the Trees on the bluff.

Families were able to enjoy hot cocoa and cookies while the snow fell from above. It was a magical night for all!

As part of the festivities, families were encouraged to bring toys for FOX10TV’s 10 Caring Gifts program, and we are happy to report that a bus-load of gifts were taken to FOX10 by our Lower School student government representatives.

Ordo Amoris Scripture Memory Challenge

This fall, students at Ordo Amoris Classical Academy take part in a schoolwide Scripture Memory Challenge that encourages them to hide God’s Word in their hearts.

Nature Connect Kindergarteners Learn with Gratitude

The Kindergarten Class at Nature Connect School had a fantastic week. Their letter of the week was L, and the students came up with all kinds of animals that began with that sound. The theme for the week focused on gratitude, and together they created a “gratitude chain” by writing down what they were thankful for. The students worked hard on several math activities, including countand-color exercises, continuing patterns, and matching quantities to written numbers. They had so much fun learning & playing outside!

Winter Wonderland at Rosinton!

Rosinton’s Library was transformed into a magical Winter Wonderland! Students have enjoyed crafts, music, movies, and fun handson activities that brought the holiday spirit to life.

Our campus has been sparkling with winter vibes, joyful smiles, and sweet moments we couldn’t wait to share with you!

Ordo Amoris Welcomes Dr. Louis Markos

Students at Ordo Amoris Classical Academy were delighted to welcome author and scholar Dr. Louis Markos for a special visit that brought literature vividly to life. Dr. Markos read aloud portions of his book The Dreaming Stone, captivating students with both the story and the experience of hearing an author share his own words.

Along the way, he spoke with students about storytelling, imagination, and the great myths that inspire his writing. The visit left students inspired, eager to read more, and reminded them that the books they love are written by real people who delight in sharing stories with young readers.

When my daughter turned 15, she had outgrown summer camps but wasn’t yet old enough to work at most places, which required a minimum age of 16. Since she loves learning and is highly independent, we started researching college summer programs for high school students. As far as I know, these programs didn’t exist when I was growing up, so I had to start from scratch—researching their offerings and determining which one would be the best fit. She was eager to enroll in a program about 45 minutes from where we live, but when the pandemic hit, she was unable to attend.

Even though she didn’t go, I can share what I learned so you can hopefully find the right program for your teen.

What is a summer college program for high school students?

“College summer programs offer high school students an incredible opportunity to explore academic interests, experience campus life, and build essential skills, like independence,” says Marc Zawel, the co-founder and CEO of AcceptU. A summer college program for high school students, typically referred to as a pre-college program, is when a high school student enrolls in classes at a college or a university. Programs can range from one week to seven weeks. Students can either live on campus, commute, or take classes online.

“These programs essentially allow students to ‘test-drive’ college. Beyond academics, they help teens prepare for the challenges of higher education in a supportive environment,” says Zawel.

Where are precollege programs offered?

You’ll find precollege programs are available at most colleges across the U.S., including private and public schools. If you opt to be a resident, you will live in the same college dorm rooms that college students typically live in.

How do you select a pre-college program?

Choosing a pre-college summer program is like selecting a college as a high school senior. Students should consider their interests, location, and cost to determine which program is the best fit.

What do you do in pre-college programs?

In addition to enrolling in a college course, most programs also offer social activities. This may include field trips to explore the local area or classic camp-style activities like talent shows and arts and crafts.

When do you sign up for pre-college programs?

Most pre-college programs have March deadlines, so you should have your selection finalized by then. Applications may also have age requirements, GPA minimums, fees, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays. The process is similar to applying to college as a high school senior, though it’s generally easier to be accepted.

Some programs are open enrollment, meaning anyone who applies is accepted.

How much do summer college programs for high school students cost?

It’s not cheap! The cost varies depending on the length of enrollment, which ranges from one to seven weeks, and whether you choose to live on campus. Most residential programs cost between $4,000 and $15,000. But there are some federally funded programs that are free or inexpensive, such as Upward Bound Program and The National Conference of Governor’s Schools. Some programs, like those offered at the University of Delaware, provide options to commute or attend online, with costs around $1,000-$2,000.

Will you receive college credit at pre-college programs?

It depends on the program. Some offer college credit and typically last four to seven weeks, while non-credit programs are usually around two weeks long. For example, George Washington University offers a two-week non-credit class referred to as “Summer Immersion.” They also offer a six-week program where students can earn college credits and is referred to as “College Intensive.”

Will enrolling in a pre-college summer program help you get into that college?

Attending a pre-college summer program is unlikely to significantly increase a high school student’s chance of being accepted there. However, it can help the student determine if the school is a good fit and provide valuable experiences to craft a more targeted personal essay when they apply.

“Participating in a summer program can strengthen a student’s college application by supporting their academic area of interest and demonstrating intellectual curiosity,” says Zawel. “Attending a program at a specific college can help a student show admissions officers why that school is a particularly good fit, given their previous experience on campus.”

What are some benefits of a precollege program?

In addition to experiencing college life, students will have the opportunity to meet professors, explore their academic interests for a potential major, and develop independence—especially if they choose to live on campus. They can also enhance their social skills by connecting with other teens and learning how to live with others.

These experiences will help ease their transition to college when the time comes.

Words Matter

What Our Kids Are Learning I work with families and kids every single day. I hear their stories...the heartbreak, the confusion, and the quiet moments when they say, “I just don’t know why people are so mean.” I’ve sat in those still, sacred spaces while children have cried from sadness and fear. I’ve spoken with parents who have lost their children to bullying. And in so many cases, it all started with words.

Lately, I can’t help but think about what our children are watching and hearing. The tone, the language, and the public examples being set by adults, especially those in positions of authority, are louder than we realize. Whether we want to believe it or not, kids are paying attention.

They listen to what adults say and how we say it. And when people in power resort to insults, name-calling, or intimidation, they’re not just expressing frustration --they’re modeling behavior. And our kids are watching every. single. second. of. It. So how are we supposed to talk to our teens about kindness, empathy, and resilience when so many adults are normalizing the opposite?

I say it in every school assembly and youth conference: Words have power. They shape how we see ourselves and others. They build culture. Children learn that culture from us. Every word we speak, post, or shout in anger teaches something about how power is used. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that verbal aggression has the same longterm emotional impact as physical bullying.

The brain processes social rejection and humiliation in the same regions that register physical pain. In other words, when some-

one is demeaned or mocked, their body reacts as if they’ve been hit. Words bruise.

They just don’t always leave visible marks.

I know this firsthand. From the age of two until thirteen, I experienced daily verbal abuse. The words left deeper wounds than any physical harm ever could. That’s why I am passionate about helping parents and educators teach children that being verbally abusive is not normal — and it’s not okay.

The reality is that bullying doesn’t start in middle school hallways; it starts long before that. Studies show that children exposed to demeaning communication by adults are far more likely to mirror that behavior. They grow into adults who use the same tactics.

Sometimes as parents, sometimes as leaders. When adults use intimidation or mockery, children internalize it as a model for how power works. Children learn that empathy is optional. That’s not leadership. That’s insecurity disguised as authority.

Then throw social media into the mix.

Our kids are growing up in a world where cruelty can be broadcast, shared, and amplified in seconds. Pew Research reports that nearly 60% of teens have experienced online harassment. I believe the number is even higher. I ask students in every presentation what they think the biggest problem with social media is — and their answer has been the same for twelve years: cyberbullying. What truly breaks my heart is that many of them have stopped speaking up.

“Everyone talks like that,” they say. Cruelty has become normal. When adults use bullying language, online or offline, they validate that culture. They teach kids that 33

cruelty is entertainment, that humiliation is a punchline, and that tearing others down is a form of power. But it’s not. That’s not leadership. That’s cowardice.

So what is the real impact? Words can kill. Victims of online harassment are more than twice as likely to attempt suicide.

Mockery can turn into tragedy. Language can fuel hate crimes, normalize violence, and destroy empathy. Every time an adult belittles another human being, kids are learning that empathy is optional. We cannot afford that lesson — not now, not ever.

What can we do? Our kids deserve better examples. They deserve leaders.

In homes, classrooms, and communities.

Leaders who lift others up instead of tearing them down. Real power isn’t proven by who we silence but by who we support.

So yes, I’m frustrated. Maybe a bit angry. Angry that I have to keep writing about this. Angry that cruelty has become casual.

Angry that kids are scrolling through the chaos of adult behavior online and wondering if kindness still matters.

It does.And it starts with us.

Let’s teach our children through how we speak, how we post, and how we lead that strength is kindness, that respect is power, and that real leadership never needs to bully to be heard.

“Take out your number two pencils.” Again. Your child probably hears this phrase often. A study by the Council of the Great City Schools found that a typical student takes an average of 112 mandated standardized tests between pre-K and graduation.

The results of these tests are taken very seriously by educators, parents, and administrators. Sometimes they even affect a child’s future placement in school. While our children have more academic opportunities than ever before, they also have more demands.

“Pressure by parents and schools to achieve top scores has created stress levels - beginning as early as elementary school - that are so high that some educators regard it as a health epidemic,” says Denice Clark, author of Overloaded and Underprepared: Strategies for Stronger Schools and Healthy, Successful Kids.

Yet, as schools continue to raise the academic bar, few offer instruction on how to effectively study for tests. Luckily, parents can encourage these important skills at home.

Engaged Learning and Efficient Note Taking Improves Test Scores: Jay Klusky, Ph.D., author of

Easy A’s: Winning the School Game, says active learning involves only two things: “getting information into your head and getting it back out again.” Without the ability to comprehend and then retain what is being taught, your child will likely miss key information.

Experts say that kids can train themselves to actively watch for clues about the information that may appear on a test.

Parenting coach Ronit Baras says most teachers drop hints about what might be on the test. Some hints may be obvious, like your teacher telling you, “Pay attention to this because it will be on your exam.” Some will be less obvious, such as the repetition of stressed information in lectures and on homework, since teachers will repeat the concepts they value.

Another necessary skill for high test scores is active note-taking, which enhances memorization. Using a recall column can make this process easier. Draw a light vertical line about 3 or 4 inches from the left margin. The right side of the line is for lecture or reading notes. After class, the student should digest, extract, and record key information into the left recall column while the topic is still fresh.

(This process will reduce study time later.)

As the test approaches, use the recall column to make flashcards or invent sample test questions for key points. (Students who prefer to do this electronically can use websites like Quizlet or Canva.)

Experts suggest a loose-leaf notebook for upper-grade students so they can easily remove pages or change the

order. The process would be the same for students too young to have lecture notes.

They would just use any information provided by their teacher or in books.

Repetitive, Scheduled Studying Increases Confidence: As test

dates approach, many students experience anxiety or dread. As a student pulls out all of his notes, homework, and textbooks, he sometimes becomes overwhelmed or discouraged. Make the process more manageable by encouraging him to break down relevant information into smaller pieces that can be reviewed a little each day.

Klusky says one key to effective studying is to review material actively rather than passively, a practice he calls “active encoding.” With this method, the student digests the information and then turns it into something else entirely.

Examples include teaching someone else what you’ve learned and reworking information into your own words. “Instead of just highlighting and going over your material repeatedly, try to really memorize it by asking questions that demand you pull the information back out of your head again,” he explains.

Experts agree that it is far better to study for shorter periods over more days than it is to cram a significant amount of study time into a limited number of sessions. It is usually beneficial to tackle difficult topics first.

Rotate a combination of various active exercises, such as reviewing old homework for future test topics, working with flashcards, and answering your own essay questions. Remember that practice increases confidence.

Test-Taking Tricks: Arm your student

with a watch, several sharpened pencils (if the test isn’t digital), spare batteries for calculators, and a positive attitude. Remind him that he is well-prepared and can use the test as an opportunity to show off his hard work.

Studies show that children who use relaxation techniques do better on tests. Teach your child deep breathing and encourage him to use this skill if he starts to tense up.

Encourage your student to do the following on any test: 1. Carefully but quickly read each set of questions twice to ensure he understands what’s being asked of him. If not, immediately ask for help.

2. Scan the test for any sections that are worth more points. Complete those first.

3. Finish the easiest questions in each section first, saving the hardest and most time-consuming for last.

Achieving success in any activity means learning, fine-tuning, and finally mastering the skills involved. Studying is no different than learning a new sport or musical instrument. Yet, children often receive more help with their fastball than with preparing for the exams that could impact their academic futures.

These small shifts may mean greater competence, less anxiety, and eventually, higher test scores and grades. ESP

Rewards, Responsibility and Teachable Moments Q. Our son is a freshman in high school, and he has the opportunity to take a school-sponsored, week-long trip next year with the rest of his class. The student fee is $500. Over the past couple of years, he has started making money mowing lawns and doing odd jobs around the neighborhood. We’ve always taught him that money comes from work, and he has always been very focused on being smart with the money he earns. Do you think we should cover the entire $500, or should he have to contribute something?

A. When it came to making these kinds of decisions at our house, my wife and I would always take a look at a few things.

Is the kid behaving? Are they getting good grades? You know, just basic things that can reasonably be expected from

most teenagers. Most of the time, if they were living like well-behaved, responsible young people, we’d pay for things like this as a reward.

But, there’s a good argument to be made for a kid having some skin in the game at that age, too. If you and your husband can pay for it without causing yourselves any financial stress—and your son is fulfilling his responsibilities at school and at home—there’s nothing wrong with you paying the fee. Then, here’s an idea. If you want to make this a teachable moment, another learning experience, you could require him to work, and save up his own spending money for the trip.

I’m glad you and your husband are thinking of your teenage son as an adult in

training. I know you love him, but it’s also a parent’s job to teach their children what they need to know for that moment when you send them off to college, trade school or even their own apartment and their first real, full-time job. Trust me, you don’t have to be a finance professor to teach your child how to save money and wisely manage their finances.

I’m so impressed with the young man you’re raising. To have that kind of drive and maturity at his age is a testimony to him, and to how well you and your husband have taught and guided him throughout the years. I have no doubt your son will be well-prepared to take on the world one day.

In the meantime, I hope he has lots of fun on his upcoming trip!

Setting goals is nothing new for many grown-ups (I’m looking at you New Year’s Resolutions!) But goals are not just for the new year, and they’re not just for adults. Kids benefit from working toward something they want to achieve. Whether it’s a cleaner room or less screen time, kids will benefit from setting ageappropriate goals.The secret is setting them up for success.

Once they have succeeded in that area, they can build on it.

• Walking the dog twice a week becomes four times a week.

• Making the bed grows to put dirty clothes in the hamper too.

• Allow each goal to grow over time.

Here are 6 ways to help your kids set and achieve goals: Talk About These Details Right Away

Set a start date and an end date. Kids often need quick wins, so shorter time frames are great. Have young kids go for a few days and build up to a week. Older kids and tweens can go longer stretches, but usually no more than a month. Offering quick wins gives them confidence and momentum to stick with it.

Interaction is a surefire way to help kids make progress on their goals.

How to Handle Setbacks

None of us wants to believe there will be setbacks in goal setting. The whole point is moving forward. But perfection isn’t realistic. There will be days when things don’t go perfectly. The key is how you handle it. Three ways to handle a setback: • One missed opportunity isn’t a failure.

Give grace and keep going.

• Losing steam feels frustrating. Look back at the progress they made.

• Things sometimes go haywire. Give a fresh start with a shorter time frame.

No matter which method you use, your kids will learn that goals are not a pass/fail system. It’s all about progress.

The Key to Rewards

If the satisfaction of a clean room was enough of a motivator, I wouldn’t have three books, a random recipe cut out from a magazine, and a screwdriver on my nightstand. We need a reward to motivate us to keep going to the finish line. Kids need that too.

Before kids even start working on a new goal, decide how they will celebrate at the end of the time frame.

Will it be going out for ice cream or watching a favorite movie? Maybe a campout in the living room or a trip to the bookstore? What about an extra story at bedtime?

Whatever reward you give, make sure it doesn’t undo the hard work your

child has done. The reward should be clear at the beginning and it should be finite. Having ice cream every night now that your child is eating more veggies doesn’t support the goal.

The reward is a singular experience to celebrate the progress they made.

To make your child’s goal-setting successful, consider how your child will track their progress and work toward an appropriate reward that is motivating and works for you. For most kids, the reward needs to be right away to associate it with their hard work.

After a week of making their bed, day 7 gets the extra story.

When they have walked the dog twice a week for a month, a walk to the ice cream shop is on day 30.

ESP: How do you juggle running a business and being a mom? Do you have any tips on how to stay balanced and focused?

AC: When I started the business in 2021, we didn’t have kids, so I spent all of my time pushing to get the business and my name out there. I worked as many birthday parties in a day as I could, and my husband helped me on the weekends. Anytime we had free time, we did anything we could to bring kids into the store. Whenever he had an off day, we were trying to book field trips.

Fast forward to now with a two-year-old — I’ve slowed down a lot. We prayed for a child for years, and now that this moment is here, we’re enjoying it, and I try not to give all my time to work. I’ve prioritized 3–4 days a week to visit as many schools as I can, and I stay home with my son one weekday, as well as the weekend. I still work birthday parties, but usually just one per weekend.

I do still pour all of my energy into summer camp as that is our busy season and my favorite time with the kids! Having an employee who can step up and help at any moment has been wonderful. She is someone who has helped grow the business and keep everything running smoothly, even when I’m unavailable.

ESP: What inspired you to start a STEM business?

AC: I taught in the classroom for nine years before leaving to run a business. The last school I taught at was Bayside Academy, where I was encouraged to pursue a master’s degree. Since our third-grade team held a STEM Day every Friday, I decided it would be best to earn my master’s with a focus on STEM. I found an incredible program through Clemson and received my Master’s Degree in Teaching and Learning with a STEM Certification.

After completing my degree, I moved to sixth-grade science at Bayside, and I loved it! However, I wanted to see if there was something out there that would allow me to teach STEM full-time because I had fallen so in love with it. While teaching that year, I spent a lot of time searching for the best place to do that and found STEM For Kids. After lots of prayer and meetings, we decided that was the route for me to take!

ESP: What do you feel is your greatest strength as a mother?

AC: I think my greatest strength as a mother is patience. Having a background in education has really helped me grow as a mom, because there was so much I already knew and understood from being in a classroom with several kids at a time. My husband jokes all the time about how much patience I have with other children, and with our own child, when I have almost none for myself when completing tasks on my own! Kids can test you in so many ways, and things can get chaotic, but I’m able to go with the flow and adapt quickly.

ESP: What type of legacy do you want to leave for your children?

AC: There are so many things I hope to leave as my legacy for my children. The most important thing is for them to know Jesus—to know how deeply loved they are by Christ, even long after we are gone. I want them to know they are loved unconditionally. From the moment we found out about them, our world changed, and we have loved them exactly as they are. I also want them to always remember to find joy in the small moments. Those memories are just as precious as the big ones.

I want my children to know what hard work looks like. They need to understand that they can work for anything they want in life, even when it’s difficult. I hope they see the work ethic my husband and I have and grow up to be hard workers, no matter what job title they hold. I want them to work just as hard and show respect to everyone they meet.

ESP: How has being a mom influenced the way you lead and innovate?

AC: Even though I’ve only officially been a mom for two years, I feel like being a teacher influenced and shaped me into the mom I am today. During those years in the classroom, you have different sets of “kids”. You learn to love all kinds of children and adapt to what each one needs. You want the best for all of your students and work hard to reach them in meaningful ways. I’m able to take everything I’ve learned and continue to learn from those students, and it helps me be a better mom.

ESP: As a mom, how do you hope for your work to impact the next generation?

AC: I hope that the students I teach become interested in and confident enough to pursue a career in STEM, if that’s what they choose to do. One of the best parts of teaching STEM is watching students fail and persevere through the process. When they don’t succeed at one of our challenges, there is so much learning that comes from that failure. They come up with new ways to solve problems, and the best part is they’re learning without even realizing it because we’re always having fun. I pray that these lessons stay with them and that they aren’t afraid to try something they’re interested in, even if it’s hard. I hope this for my own kids as well.

The family loves to travel, watch football and softball games, go swimming, and play outside. They enjoy feeding the fish off their dock every night, Mardi Gras season, and going to church.
