SERVICE what is the spotlight on service program?

The CNH Spotlight on Service Program (SOSP) was created by the Service Projects Committee to promote District and International Initiatives as well as to encourage active participation with organizations and initiatives. Monthly guides include tips and ideas on how clubs can complete the monthly service initiatives. The program also gives clubs the opportunity to showcase their unique service projects that positively impact their home, school, and community. The Spotlight on Service Program would love to receive project submissions from the District to showcase projects from the previous month in the District Newsletter. OCTOBER: UNICEF

A MESSAGE FROM THE SERVICE PROJECTS COMMITTEE This month of October is about promoting UNICEF and contributing to their cause of helping children all over the world! Focus on how you can contribute to UNICEF’s cause through fundraising or service! We have compiled event ideas, service projects, and fundraisers for inspiration! We hope you can find them useful in serving this month’s theme! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to our Service Projects chair, Jennifer Cheung, at sp.chair@cnhkeyclub.org.

Since 1950, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF has raised $177 million! Key Club International is partnered with UNICEF, raising funds for The Eliminate Project. Trickor-Treat for UNICEF works in 190 countries around the world helping save and improve children’s lives. A yearly campaign runs from early July to late June the following year. The busiest time of the year is October during Halloween as students go around with small cardboard boxes asking for coins as donations. These boxes can be ordered as early as late August as orders will start shipping before September 12th. The latest a club will be able to order is October 24th, so plan accordingly! When all coins are collected, do not send UNICEF any cash! Instead, make an equivalent donation to UNICEF using a credit card or writing a check. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a receipt in the mail.

SUNNY SOCIALS

On August 28th, 2021, Western Key Club held a social with Anaheim and Magnolia Key Club at Twila Reid Park from 1-3 pm. At this social, Nick, April, Diana, and I would lead the events and games we had planned for the day. The first game that we had started off the social with was poncho. We had four different poncho groups and after all the Fortnite dances and exercises, with the occasional dance moves, poncho 2 took the win. After poncho, we played dragon tail, where we had 3 different dragons, one representing Anaheim, one for Western, and the final one for Magnolia. I think in the end, Magnolia took the win. After all the activities we spent the remainder of our time working on our service project where we painted pots that we would either keep or donate. On mine, I painted a white background, and in the middle, I put a nice big sunflower with a smiley face, and the rim was painted sky blue. On my left was Kevin who painted the red mushroom from Super Mario where you’d grow bigger when getting it, which I thought was cool. For fundraising, we brought horchata, nachos, and water to be sold, so shout out to Diana and her restaurant for the hookups. In the end we never got to the water balloons so we all just started to throw water balloons at each other. Then that concluded the rest of the social and the next day Western Key Club had a social with John F. Kennedy Key Club.

On Sunday, August 29th, John F. Kennedy High School and Western High School had an in-person social at Veteran’s Park. From there they were able to participle in different crafts activities, play different games, and participate in a special fundraiser involving their President! The first event that happened was the icebreaker “Soulmate.” Soulmate is an activity where one person is chosen and asked a series of questions. If the other people participating have the same answer as the chosen person, they stay in until one person is remaining. This one person is now their soulmate! This is a fun icebreaker activity that anyone can participate in, and you may find that you have a lot in common with your chosen soulmate. The Service Project that was presented on this day was origami. Members could make different origami objects such as stars, cranes, flowers, etc. This was a fun activity that not only taught everyone something new, but also gave everyone something to do if they are ever bored at home.

Hey Suns! Oxford Key Club recently pulled off another amazing social on August 29th, and this time, we collaborated with Savanna Key Club and Whitney Key Club. I was really excited for this social because I really wanted to get to know more people from both clubs, and the planning for this social was really fun! I was very happy that this social was a success, and this was a fun way to lighten the darkness that the beginning of the school year cast upon us. The first thing that was done at the social was announce the fundraisers that were happening. Oxford sold for $2, Ice Cream for $1, and both for $3. Whitney sold Milk Tea and Thai Tea with boba for $4 a cup. They were both pretty successful in my opinion, as both fundraisers were close to selling out. Then, Leia (Whitney’s Spirit Chair) and I let everyone introduce themselves by playing a game of Huggie Bear. When people were out after every round, they got to introduce themselves to the group. I feel like this was a good method to allow everyone to get to know each other, but I should’ve maybe kept everyone together instead of letting them go back so everyone got to hear each other’s name. After introductions were made, everyone got a 5-minute break to go continue supporting the fundraisers if they didn’t get a chance to do so already. After the 5-minute break, we played a couple rounds of Soulmate! The way Soulmate works is that everyone will be standing up, and a volunteer will be asked questions about the things they like. These questions are usually this-or-that questions, and everyone else will either remain standing or sit down after every response the volunteer makes. A person would sit down if they disagreed with the choice that the volunteer made, while a person would remain standing if they agreed with the choice that the volunteer made. Once someone sits down, they can’t stand up again until the game is over. The last person standing is the volunteer’s soulmate. We played 3 rounds of soulmate, and it was a fun game to play! It was interesting to hear each volunteer’s response to the questions that were asked, and it was even more interesting to see who agreed with each volunteer. After the rounds of Soulmate, the service activity began! The service activity for this event was Color-A-Smile, so everyone got a coloring sheet and began to color away. It was a nice service project that didn’t require too much thought and effort, and it allowed people to still talk to each other and enjoy their time at the social. It was also very cool to see how talented everyone is at drawing. A lot of the drawings were so pretty! After ~50 minutes of the service project, we transitioned to our final activity, which was a game of Spoons! Since we didn’t have spoons available to us, we used the color pencils from the Color-A-Smile service project instead. There were 3 games of Spoons going on simultaneously, and it was quite a sight to see when some people would grab for the color pencils while others didn’t notice. I enjoyed watching people play and get frantic over how someone was going very slowly to make sure they kept the cards that they wanted. I didn’t expect Spoons to take up a lot of time though, so I wish that Leia and I allotted more time to finish the game. Once the Spoons game was over, there were only 15 minutes left of the social. The rest of the time was used to take club photos and one big social photo. After the event, I spent some time to ensure that we didn’t leave any trash at the gazebo, since littering is NOT safe-key!!! All in all, the social was a success, and I couldn’t be happier at how it turned out in the end. Make sure to stay alert for the next social Suns! After how the past 2 socials happened, I can assure you that you don’t want to miss the next ones!!

PROVIDED BY: JOSEPH LUKAS | OXFORD ACADEMY

The next activity had everyone get together in pairs of two. Two people were to gather together and toss a water balloon back and forth. It was fun to see everyone try their best to catch the water balloon, but inevitably get splashed by water. This activity was one that was fun between friends and strangers alike, albeit it was more fun seeing others getting soaked with water.
One of the fundraisers that were held actually had to do with our presidents and spirit coordinators! For $1 each, members could buy a water balloon to toss at whichever president/spirit coordinator they wanted. It gave everyone who participated a big laugh and I would say it was a bang for your buck, though I don’t know if those who got splashed could say the same. John F. Kennedy’s president Marilyn Nguyen even stated, “I’m glad to see everyone have so much fun although it was a bit scary to see water coming at me.” The last fundraiser, and subsequently the last activity, was decorating a sun plushy. Sun plushies were sold for $3 each, and anyone who bought one was able to paint faces on them. This gave them a personal touch and a keepsake to remember the fun day that they had!

In the month of August, one event that I went to that really stood out to me was August DCM on August 21st at Modejska Park. Since the pandemic, Key Club really has been virtual for the past 18th months and for me, it was my first in-person DCM I had been to. Since I am a sophomore, I did not get to experience in-person DCMS before the pandemic, so I was very hesitant at first cause I did not know whether It would still be as fun as if it were held two years ago. But to my surprise, it was one of the best Key Club events I had ever been to. Even though in the beginning it was raining as soon as I got to the park I saw everyone laughing and having a great time. I met up with some of my friends, enjoyed DCM, and bought from many school’s fundraisers to support PTP. I then sat down in a circle with Cypress Key Club to make bookmarks for children. It was such a great bonding experience and watching everyone make bookmarks and take pictures with their bookmarks made my heart glow so much. Then we played games, school vs school. We first played poncho, which I had previously played before at Cypress’s first social with Magnolia and Whitney, so I knew how the game worked, and playing with my friends, fellow officers, members all from Cypress Key Club made it ten times better. During this game I realized how much spirit we had as a club and it really showed during this game. We did end up I believe coming in third, but what I noticed about us coming in third was, we all were actually so happy and so proud of one another and we still held so much spirit until the game finished. A fashion show was then held, and all I could remember was throwing jackets, headbands, and Ikea keychain onto our secretary Jordan. I feel like we may have had more excitement getting him dressed for the fashion show than actually watching it. The fashion show finally started and all I could hear was the sound of my own scream, cheering everyone on while laughing at the amazing poses everyone was giving out. Another game that stood out to me that really showed our spirit was a balloon game. Balloons were tied to peoples ankles and it was Red vs Black vs Yellow. Once again all I could hear was the sound of my screams telling my friends that they got this. It was as if I was my dad watching baseball and he was watching the world series. As Spirit chair I love to see members, officers, and so many others have fun and during this DCM it truly inspired me to have even more spirit for this term. I do truly love watching everyone become a family at these events and I seriously cannot wait to see what this term can bring us.

spotlight:

WHITNEY KEY CLUB

PRESIDENT’S PROFILE name: EMILY THANG school: WHITNEY KEY CLUB class: 2022 WHAT'S POPPIN' D30S! My name is Emily Thang and I am honored to serve Whitney Key Club as President for the 2021-2022 term! Ever since attending one of my first Key Club events at HOPE Food Bank as a freshman, I have fallen deeper and deeper in love with Key Club as each day goes by, and I don't regret any minute of it. From meeting new people to making unforgettable memories at Fall Rally, Key Club has given me so much—and I hope to reciprocate that same energy and care back to YOU GUYS. Stay shinin' suns! 💛

- fun facts -

1. My all-time favorite musical artist is Lorde! Her highly-anticipated 3rd album since 2017 is rumored to be coming out this year :) 2. My fingers are crooked and not straight! They curl upwards at the ends, which is kind of weird HAHA 3. I LOVE OATMEAL! I used to hate it, until I was forced to eat it everyday during the summer for volleyball. Now, I often have oatmeal each morning with some strawberries—yum!

what legacy do you want to leave behind?

I hope to be a source of support and motivation throughout our members’ Key Club journey and give them the same care and warmth that I first felt in Key Club. Key Club has taught me so much about what it means to be a resilient leader and caring individual, not to mention all of the unforgettable memories and treasured friendships that I would not trade for the world. For that, I am compelled to give back all that Key Club has given me and lead our club to success through active community service and fundraising as much as possible.

why did you join key club? I joined Key Club because of the free shirts (lol) and all the Instagram posts I kept seeing about Key Club. I knew I wanted to do something worthwhile and engage in meaningful community service during my high school experience, so I ended up joining as a freshman during Club Rush, and the rest is history!

what are your goals for the 2021-2022 term?

My goals for this term include: fostering a passion for Key Club within every member, ensuring a positive environment at all times, and securing the Diamond Distinguished Club 3peat! I would also love to get to know each and every one of our members better, and encourage them to be more active in Key Club. As this is my last year in Key Club, I want to cherish every moment and make the most out of my term.

when was your key club moment? My Key Club moment occurred at my second service event ever: HOPE Food Bank. Here, I made some of my first non-Whitney Key Club friends! To this day, I still vividly remember passing out Costco croissants and cream cheese danishes, while joking with other Key Clubbers and staff.

In the month of August alone, Gretchen Whitney Key Club served over 524 hours and raised $287.67 for PTP. Gretchen has been hard at work, initiating a tremendous amount of service projects (food banks, marathons, Love Anaheim, etc.), socials (OA x Savanna Back 2 School Social), fundraisers (pizza/boba sales, food nights, giveaways, etc.), and more! Our Club Rush was on September 21st and our first General Meeting was on the 28th, both of which were quite successful and fun! We’ve also been very active on Instagram by featuring event recaps, cabinet takeovers/Q&As, and vlogs on Instagram Reels! We will host our annual school-wide School Supply Drive from September 29th to October 7th, in which we will be collecting and donating unused school supplies to a local elementary school in need. Stay tuned for even more to come in October, including a joint service project with the Kiwanis of La Palma, an afterschool Service Week, Canned Food Drive, and more!

question

are you do you introverte have

Christina Nguyen | Lieutenant Governor

Michelle Kim | News Editor

introverted… i hate talking :’)

I believe I am an ambivert! I can adjust to my surroundings well and can be more extraverted or introverted depending on the situation and the people!

Natalie Sheng | Executive Assistant

Ashlyn Wong | Service Projects Coordinator

I used to be introverted but Key Club helped me open up and now I’m more extroverted<3 I hope to make good friends with all of you!

I like to think that I'm more extraverted, though recently in quarantine I've become more shy. When I took the 16 personalities quiz, I got ENFP, which means that I'm supposedly extraverted as well!

Helen Tran | Executive Assistant

Sofia Ysabel Gange | Fundraising Coordinator

i definitely think that i’m more of an extrovert, though i do have lots of moments where i make a lot of more traditionally “introverted” decisions!

I think I'm more of an extroverted introvert. If you're quiet and alone, I'll go up to you and strike a conversation. BUT, if you're outgoing, I won't make the first move :D

Sania Usmani | Executive Assistant

Anika Kasula | Fundraising Coordinator

I'm definitely more extroverted! Although I enjoy my alone time, I really love being outgoing because it allows me to meet new people, form new bonds, take risks, and experience new things!!

I like to describe myself as an ambivert, but I do think I am a bit more of an introvert than an extrovert.

Beverly Nguyen | Service Projects Coordinator

Raquel Romero | Publicity Coordinator

I'm more introverted. Staying inside while watching anime is how I want to spend my weekends :^)

def more introverted

| 16

n box

ed or extraverted?

Itzel Huerta | Publicity Coordinator

Mia McMurray | Spirit Coordinator

I would say I’m more of an ambivert :0 but maybe a bit more on the extroverted side.

I AM INTROVERTED!!!!!!!!! And probably one of the loudest introverts you’ll ever meet. Yes, I can be very very loud but it really depends on who I am around so if you don’t know me well, you will mainly see the quiet side of me <3

Joanne Lee | Historian

Megan Tran | Spirit Coordinator

i’m more of an extravert in person, but introverted online if that makes sense?? like i don't really talk in zoom meetings but in person it's really easy to express yourself.

I would call myself an extravert because I thrive in busy environments, but I have my days where I don't talk to anyone just people I feel like it.

Annie Le | Historian

Jasmine Tai | Spirit Coordinator

I could be an introvert and extrovert at the same time because according to my personality test, I am a 50/50 introverted and extraverted.

i’m more extroverted especially because i love to be around/talk to people!

Kaylin Chan | Historian

Saadhvi Narayanan | Spirit Gear Coordinator

At the moment, I would say I am an extrovert who may or may not act introverted at times, depending on the mood or how I read the atmosphere. Please feel free to talk to me about literally anything, because I love conversations and more friends! No matter how introverted I may seem at times, have no doubt, I am definitely more extroverted at heart.

I am definitely more introverted, but I can be extremely extroverted in certain situations.

Tina Tran | Tech Editor

Allan James Quintos | Member Recognition Chair

I am more extraverted. At some points of my life I was an introvert or ambivert, but I think I will stay an extrovert for a long time...

I would say that I am more of an extraverted-introvert... if that makes sense. Basically, I never really start new conversations (unless I am forced haha), but when someone matches my vibe or energy, I will be able to showcase more my extraverted personality.
