Loon Festival to be held July 20
A5-day-oldloonchick isfedaminnowbyone ofitsparentswhileitssibling hitches a ride on Pleasant Lake in New London. If you see an adult loon with chicks, make sure to stay at least 150 feet from them so the parents can concentrate on feeding and caring for their chicks.
TheLoonPreservation Committee(LPC)will conductitsAnnual LoonCensusonJuly20 from8to9a.m.Duringthat hour,LPCstaffandvolunteerswillsurveylakes acrossthestateforloons. FollowingtheLoonCensus, theLoonPreservation Committeewillhostits 45thAnnualLoonFestival, afamily-friendlyeventofferedfreeofchargeto membersofthepublic, from10a.m.to2p.m.at TheLoonCenterinMoultonborough.

difficultforbiologiststoget anaccuratecount.
“Duringthecensus,our goalistohaveasmany peopleaspossiblesurveying NewHampshirelakesatthe exactsametime,which helpsustogetasnapshotin timeofourloonpopulation andnaildownexactlyhow manyofthosepairedand unpairedadultswehavein thestate,”Hughessaid.
TheLoonCensusalso helpsLPCtomonitorthe progressofknownloon
nests,discoverpreviously unknownnests,checkon thesurvivalofchicksthat havehatchedinthepreviousweeks,anddetectnew loonchicksthatmayhave hatchedsincebiologistslast surveyedagivenwater body.LPCisseekingadditionalLoonCensusvolunteers,andthosewhoareinterestedshouldcall603476-5666formoreinformation.

TheHonorBearProjectis amilitarysuicideflaginstallationthatbringsattention tothisnationaltragedy.
Attendeesareaskedto participatebyhelpingto ‘plant’over660American flagstorepresentthe numberofveteranswelose tosuicideeverymonth;one largeAmericanflagtorepresentthe40+activeduty, NationalGuard,andreservistsandanotherfive Americanflagstorepresent the120+firstresponders losttosuicideeachmonth. Thisinstallationwillremain atNHTMfor30days.
