The Sainsbury Institute was founded in 1999 through the generosity of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury to promote knowledge and understanding of Japanese arts and cultures. The mission of the Sainsbury Institute is to promote world-class research and to be a leader in the study of Japanese arts and cultures from the past to the present. Working with our academic partners and funders, the Institute furthers its mission through:

• creating collaborative and active global research networks

• disseminating the results of our research

• advancing outreach and educational activities

The Institute continues its close collaboration with institutional partners including the University of East Anglia (UEA); the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London (SOAS); the British Museum; and other institutions in the UK, Japan and Europe. It maintains a rich programme of research, fellowships, public lectures and international workshops. It is committed to widely disseminating the fruits of its scholarships and its research activities through its website www.sainsbury-institute. org and its e-magazine.

FOREWORD BY THE CHAIR OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

Once again it is my privilege to introduce the Annual Report of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures. It covers the year ended 31 July 2016 and is the first of these reports to be presented in digital format.

2015-16 was another successful and highly productive year for the Institute, as the following pages will show. Research, academic workshops, exhibitions, postgraduate research supervision, lectures and other outreach activities all feature strongly, while the publication record from SISJAC’s research and academic staff and associates is impressive. The visiting Fellowship and Scholarship programmes have continued alongside collaborative projects with the University of East Anglia, the British Museum, the School of Oriental and African Studies and many other institutions in the UK, Japan and elsewhere.

Funding for the Institute’s work comes from a wide range of grant-awarding bodies and individuals. I take this opportunity to thank them all for their generous support, especially the Trustees of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation whose annual grants cover SISJAC’s core staff, running and premises costs. Guided by the Management Board, SISJAC’s Executive Director (Ms Mizutori Mami), Research Director (Professor Nicole Rousmaniere) and Head of the Institute’s Centre for Archaeology and Heritage (Dr Simon Kaner) continue to build on SISJAC’s strengths while exploring new opportunities consistent with our mission. For example, research plans are in place in preparation for the next national assessment of the quality of research in UK higher education institutions (Research Excellence Framework) and proposals to offer courses in Japanese art and cultural heritage as part of an MA programme at UEA are under active consideration. In my Foreword to last year’s annual report, I noted the retirement of Graham Greene CBE as a member of the Management Board. One of the leading publishers of his generation and a former Chairman of the British Museum and Museums and Galleries Commission, Graham was among the first members of SISJAC’s Management Board. It was with great sadness that we learned of his death on 10 October 2016 at the age of 80.

Michael Barrett OBE retired from the Management Board in July 2016. As a former Director of the British Council in Japan, Chief Executive of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and Council Member of the Japan Society, he brought great knowledge and wisdom to our Board meetings. We are fortunate that we have been able to fill the vacancy left by Mike’s retirement with another distinguished former British Council Officer and Chief Executive of the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, Mr Stephen McEnally.

執行理事会理事長挨拶

2016年7月31日までの一年間の活動を紹介した、本年度の活動報 告書を皆様にお届けします。年次報告書を発行し始めて以来、今回 は初めて電子版のみにての発行となります。本報告書で明らかなよ うに、2015年—2016年も研究所にとって充実した実りの多い一年 となりました。研究、学術的ワークショップ、展覧会、博士課程研 究指導、講演、啓発普及など、その活動は幅広く確固としたものです。

研究所の研究職員や客員研究員による出版も充実しています。また、 フェローシップ制度は、イーストアングリア大学、大英博物館、ロ ンドン大学アジア・アフリカ研究学院をはじめとする諸機関との共 同プロジェクトとともに継続して運営されています。

研究所のこれらの活動は、多くの助成機関と個人の方々のご援助 により支えられています。この場をお借りして全ての皆様のご支援 に心より御礼を申し上げます。特に、研究所職員人件費、運営・設 備費などへの助成金を毎年提供してくださるギャツビー財団に深く

感謝の意を表します。

執行理事会の指導のもと、統括役所長（水鳥真美）、研究担当所 長（ニコル・クーリッジ・ルマニエール）そして考古・文化遺産学 センター長（サイモン・ケイナー）は、研究所の使命に則した新た

な可能性を求め続け、研究所の活動を更に強固なものにしています。

その一例として、英国高等教育機関を対象にした次回の研究評価に 向けて研究計画をたて、日本美術・文化遺産科目をイーストアング リア大学の修士課程プログラムとして設置する提案も積極的に検討 中です。

昨年の年次報告書で、グラハム・グリーン氏が執行理事会メンバー を退任されたことをお知らせしましたが、同氏が2016年10月10 日に80年の生涯を閉じられたことは、悲しみに耐えません。同世 代の偉大な出版人の一人であり、大英博物館そして博物館・美術館

評議委員会の理事長も務めたグリーン氏は、研究所の初期執行理事 会メンバーの一人でした。心よりお悔やみ申し上げます。

マイケル・バレット氏は、2016年７月をもって研究所理事会を 退任されました。ブリティッシュ・カウンシル駐日代表、グレイト

ブリテン・ササカワ財団事務局長、日本協会評議委員などを歴任し たバレット氏は、その幅広い知識と深い見識で研究所理事会に大き く貢献されました。氏の後任として、ブリティッシュ・カウンシル に勤務し、その後、グレイトブリテン・ササカワ財団事務局長を務 めたスティーブン・マカネリー氏が理事会メンバーに加わりました。

STATEMENT BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Over the past year, the Sainsbury Institute has continued energetically to extend its network of associated institutions and scholars, concluding collaborative agreements and welcoming a number of new fellows and scholars to our headquarters in Norwich.

I am delighted to report that the Sainsbury Institute signed collaborative research agreements with no fewer than four esteemed academic institutions between this reporting year, in addition to renewing our existing arrangement with one other. These institutions (in order of date of signing) are: the Organization for the Advancement of Research and Development of Kokugakuin University; the Niigata Prefectural Museum of History; the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (‘Nabunken’); the Research Centre for Non-Written Cultural Materials, Institute for the Study of Japanese Folk Culture, Kanagawa University; and the Global Exchange Organisation for Research and Education of Gakushuin University. Further, in August 2016 we added the University of Arts London (UAL) to our partners in the UK. A full list of our collaborative partners is provided in this report, proud testament to the recognition accorded globally to us as a centre for excellence for research, outreach and education on Japanese arts and culture.

The practice of bringing in academics to join us in Norwich through various fellowship and scholarship schemes is well established. Four excellent Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellows, one Handa Japanese Archaeology Fellow, and a Sotheby’s Senior Scholar were among the academics who visited and stayed with us during the year. The University of East Anglia (UEA) continues to enrich its Japanese Studies offerings. July 2016 saw the first cohort of students graduate from the new BA course in Japanese language. In addition to the four lecturers who teach this course, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UEA has made three new hires for Japanese History, and International Relations and Japanese Foreign Policy as of May 2017. We are excited that the presence of Japan is becoming

increasingly prominent on the campus and will continue to work together with the Centre for Japanese Studies, led by Dr Simon Kaner, to ensure the success of such endeavours.

We are very pleased to be able to report that in January 2016 Professor Toshio Watanabe joined our team at the Sainsbury Institute. Professor Watanabe is a leading historian of Japanese art who has taught in many of the most esteemed art institutions of the world, producing numerous highly original and award-winning publications and generating exciting programmes and projects; and we are delighted and honoured to have him on board.

I would like to add my own thanks to those of our chair Professor David Richardson’s and emphasize the deep appreciation we feel to Lord Sainsbury, the Trustees of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and all our patrons and supporters who have, with generous support, made possible the projects described in this report. My sincere thanks to you all.

研究所はこの一年間、学術協力関係にある機関や研究者とのネット ワークを積極的に広げてきました。その成果として、諸機関と提携 合意を結び、ノリッチの本部に新たなフェローや研究者を迎え続け てています。

本年度は、高い評価を得ている４つの学術機関と新規の研究協力 合意を結び、さらに１機関との既存の合意を更新しました。これら の機関とは、國學院大學研究開発推進機構、新潟県立歴史博物館、 奈良国立文化財研究所、神奈川大学日本常民文化研究所・非文字資 料研究センター、そして学習院大学国際研究教育機構です（合意を 締結した日付順）。さらに、2016年８月にはロンドン芸術大学(UAL)

が更なる英国のパートナーとして加わりました。連携機関一覧は本 報告書にても紹介しています。このような協力体制は、セインズベ リー研究所が日本芸術・文化の研究と教育を発信する重要な拠点と して広く認められてきたことを裏付けるものです。

本年度は４名のロバート＆リサ・セインズベリー・フェロー、そ してハンダ日本考古学フェローとサザビーズ・シニア・スカラー各 １名に加え、多くの研究者がノリッチに滞在し研究をすすめました。 また、イーストアングリア大学においては、日本研究科目を強化充 実させています。2016年7月には日本語を専攻する第一期学部生 が卒業していきました。更にイーストアングリア大学人文学部は、 現在日本語コースで教鞭をとる４名の准教授に加えて、２０１７年 ５月の現時点までに日本史、国際関係及び日本外交政策の分野で新 たに3名の准教授を迎え入れました。大学内で日本の存在がますま す大きくなっていることに期待も高まり、サイモン・ケイナー博士 が率いる日本学センターとともに、今後とも成果を挙げるよう努力 していきます。

2016年１月から、渡辺俊夫教授が研究所に加わりました。渡辺 教授は著名な日本美術史学者であり、長年にわたり各国の優れた芸 術機関で教育に従事されてきました。また、オリジナリティに溢れ た多数の著書を執筆し、数々の賞を受賞されている一方で、啓発的 プログラムやプロジェクトも企画されてきました。研究所職員一同、

渡辺教授を心より歓迎いたします。

理事長のデビッド・リチャードソン教授の謝辞に加え、この機会 をお借りして、私からもセインズベリー卿、ギャツビー財団の理事 の皆様をはじめとする研究所のパトロン及び支援者の皆様へ、研究 所の活動への惜しみないご支援に御礼を申し上げます。

ART AND CULTURAL RESOURCES

Art and Cultural Resources at the Sainsbury Institute is led by the Institute’s Research Director, Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere (currently seconded to the British Museum as IFAC Handa Curator of Japanese Arts) in collaboration with Toshio Watanabe, University of East Anglia Professor of Japanese Arts and Cultures and the Founding Director of Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation of the University of the Arts London; and it is enriched by the activities of our Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellows.

In the autumn of 2015, Professor Rousmaniere curated an Asahi Shimbun display at the British Museum titled Manga Now: Three Generations, which attracted over one hundred thousand visitors. The display focused on a trio of celebrated Japanese manga artists: Chiba Tetsuya, best known for his sports manga, a master who has been creating bestselling manga for over 50 years; Hoshino Yukinobu, who specialises in science fiction (and who created Professor Munakata’s British Museum Adventure); and the youngest of the three, Nakamura Hikaru, whose work is whimsical and centred on everyday life – she took the Japanese manga world by storm with her depictions of Jesus and Buddha living as flatmates in contemporary Tokyo. A highly popular graphic form and a huge business that has avid fans all over the globe, manga continue to go from strength to strength in Japan.

Professor Rousmaniere curated another exhibition in the Asahi Shimbun dispaly at the British Museum in the summer of 2016, this one titled Made in Japan: Kakiemon and 400 Years of Japanese Porcelain. The exhibition focused on a style of porcelain ware known as Kakiemon, named after the family who in the seventeenth century developed the firing technique that produces its superb quality of decoration. Featured in the display was an original film made by the British Museum at the Kakiemon kiln in the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture, which allowed visitors to see the methods involved in

the production of Kakiemon porcelain. The objects shown ranged from the charming figurine ‘Boy on a Go game board’ to an outsize dish made by the former head of the family Kakiemon XIV, and an exquisite octagonal lidded bowl by his son Kakiemon XV, made specifically for this exhibition and in the British Museum collection.

At the Sainsbury Institute, we consistently pursue projects that explore and celebrate the interface between culture and society. This year we have been busy preparing and executing the first part of our new project Tokyo Futures: 1868-2020 Tokyo’s successful bid to host the 2020 Olympics provided us with a unique opportunity to reassess the changes undergone by the city of Tokyo since the late nineteenth century and to imagine how the city may be transformed by 2020 and beyond. Four institutions, the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute, the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and the Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nations, University of the Arts London, collaborated to put on six lectures, which took place both in Japan and the UK with the three themes of Nature, City and Art. Details of the lectures can be found in the section titled ‘Other Lectures and Workshops’ in this report.

This year we welcomed four new Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellows to the Institute: Kimura Tadakazu CBE, Dr Radu Leca, Dr Seung Yeon Sang, and Dr Tsuchikane Yasuko. In June 2016, Dr Radu Leca, an art historian who obtained his PhD from SOAS in 2015 and who focuses on the ‘spatial imaginary’, organised a two-day international symposium titled ‘Isles of Gold Revisited: New Approaches to the Study of Early Modern Maps’, looking into the Cortazzi Map Collection of the Lisa Sainsbury Library. In the same month, Dr Seung Yeon Sang, a historian of Japanese art with a focus on the Japanese practice of appreciating and collecting ceramics for the tea

ceremony, organised an international workshop titled ‘The History of Art Collecting and Patronage of Chanoyu’. Researchers from the UK, Europe, the States and Japan participated, with fascinating, lively discussion at both events.

The monthly Third Thursday lectures, supported by our sponsors Yakult UK and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, continue to be well attended. The lectures cover all the areas of our varied research interests. Over the course of the year eight lectures were delivered on topics in the area of arts and culture, including a lecture delivered in December 2016 by Professor Rousmaniere entitled ‘Manga Now’ at the British Museum.

芸術・文化資源分野の研究は研究担当所長であるニコル・クー リッジ・ルマニエール（IFACハンダ日本美術キュレーター として大英博物館に出向中）とイーストアングリア大学日本 美術・文化学教授兼ロンドン芸術大学トランスナショナル・ アート研究所初代所長の渡辺俊夫教授が中心になり、更には ロバート&リサ・セインズベリー・フェローの活動によって さらに充実したものになっています。

ルマニエール教授は大英博物館で日本関連の二つの特別展 を企画担当しました。2015年秋に朝日新聞ディスプレーで 開催された「Manga now:三世代の漫画家」展は大人気を博 し100,000人以上が来場しました。展示は、世代の異なる三 人の漫画家−50年以上にわたりスポーツ漫画を中心にベス トセラー作品を生み続けている日本漫画界の重鎮ちばてつや 氏、SF分野の傑作で知られ、過去に「宗像教授の大英博物館 大冒険」を制作した星野之宣氏、そしてイエスと仏陀の現代 東京での共同下宿生活を描いて話題となった、三人の中で最 年少の中村光氏−を紹介しています。高い人気を誇る視覚描 写であり巨大ビジネスにもなっている漫画は、世界中に熱狂 的なファンがいますが、本展ではその故郷日本で漫画の芸術 的表現がますます力強く進化していることを提示しました。

同じく朝日新聞ディスプレーで2016年夏に開催されたも う一つの企画展「メイド・イン・ジャパン: 柿右衛門と有田 焼の400年」では、柿右衛門様式の磁器に焦点を当てました。

柿右衛門様式とは17世紀に有田の陶工初代柿右衛門によっ

て確立された色絵装飾様式のことです。17世紀後半の色絵碁 盤唐子置物、十四代酒井田柿右衛門の力作「濁手つつじ文鉢」、

本特別展のために十五代が作陶し新たに大英博物館のコレク

ションに加わった繊細な「濁手団栗文蓋物」などを展示しま

した。また、会場では、特別な許可と協力を得て撮影した有 田の柿右衛門窯での制作工程の映像を上映し、数百年間受け 継がれてきた伝統技法と磁器制作を来場者に紹介しました。

研究所は文化と社会の交わりを精査するプロジェクトを進 めています。本年度に企画実施された「東京−未来への歴史 1868-2020」第一ステージはその一つです。2020年オリン ピック・パラリンピックの東京招致決定を機に、東京という 都市が明治から現在まで受容してきた変遷、そしてこの都市 が2020年までと更にそれ以後どのように変わっていくかに ついて再考する特別な機会を得ました。本プロジェクトの第 １ステージでは、セインズベリー日本藝術研究所、明治神宮 国際神道研究所、ロンドン大学アジア・アフリカ研究学院、 そしてロンドン芸術大学トランスナショナル・アート研究所 の四機関の協力で「自然」「都市」「芸術」の三つのテーマか

ら東京を検証し、日本と英国で6回の連続講演を開催しまし た。これら講演の詳細は本報告書のその他の講演およびワー クショップの項で紹介しています。

本年度は、木村伊量氏、ラドゥ・レカ博士、スン・ヨン・ サン博士、土金康子博士の４名をロバート＆リサ・セインズ ベリー・フェローとしてノリッチに迎えました。レカ博士と サン博士は2016年6月にそれぞれ自分の研究分野にかかわ るシンポジウムやワークショップをノリッチで主催していま す。2015年にロンドン大学アジア・アフリカ研究学院で博士 号を修得し、空間表現の研究をしているレカ博士が企画した シンポジウム「黄金の島再訪：近代地図研究への新たなアプ ローチ」では、研究所のリサ・セインズベリー圖書館所蔵の コータッツィ古地図コレクションを考証しました。一方、サ ン博士は「茶の湯における蒐集と保護の歴史」をテーマとす るワークショップを主導しました。それぞれの会合には、英 国内、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、日本各国から研究者が参加し、 活発な議論がかわされました。

月例の第三木曜日講演会シリーズは引き続きヤクルトUK とグレイトブリテン・ササカワ財団の助成により運営され、 毎回たくさんの聴講者が参加し、研究所が関わる広範囲の研 究分野を対象とした多岐にわたる講演内容を提供していま す。その中でも、本年度は研究担当所長による「大英博物館 『Manga Now』展」を含め、文化芸術分野に関する８つの講 演が行われました。

ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

Another busy year for the Centre for Archaeology and Heritage saw us building further connections between Japanese and European archaeology, welcoming the participants in the first Sainsbury Institute- University of Tokyo Winter Programme and saying farewell to some dear colleagues as well as welcoming some new ones. Full details of the various projects the Centre is involved in are now available on our website

The Centre was well represented at major academic conferences in archaeology and heritage, with members giving papers and organising panels. At the Mesolithic Europe conference in Belgrade, Serbia, we accompanied our former Academic Associate Taniguchi Yasuhiro to the famous Mesolithic fisher folk village of Lepenski Vir on the banks of the Danube, and organised a session marking 20 years since the landmark conference ‘From the Jomon to Star Carr’, which for the first time introduced a large cohort of Jomon archaeologists to their European counterparts. In this we were joined by Oliver Craig from the University of York, with whom we are collaborating on a major AHRC-funded research project on food residues in Jomon pottery. Our links to York were strengthened through the IN-PACE seminar series organised by Shoda Shinya, Academic Associate at SISJAC, and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellow at York University, which brought five specialists from Dr Shoda’s home institution, the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties (‘Nabunken’), to the UK for seminars in Norwich, London and York over the year. This series was funded by our SISJACSOAS collaborative fund, with Dr Charlotte Horlyck as co-organiser. In November 2015 we returned to Tubingen University in Germany for a workshop on ‘The Archaeology of Burial Mounds in Japan and Europe’, organised by our Academic Associate and former Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellow Werner Steinhaus. We were able to use this opportunity to launch an exciting new Online Dictionary of

Japanese-German-English Archaeological Terms

In Japan, a reception at International House in Roppongi, Tokyo in November 2015, on the occasion of UEA Vice-Chancellor Professor David Richardson’s first trip to Japan, allowed us to trailer the first programme of online lectures in our scheduled four annual ‘Winter Programmes’ in British Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, to be held jointly by the Sainsbury Institute and the University of Tokyo. This five-week online course was devised by Dr Sam Nixon, our Senior Research Associate, helped by colleagues in IT services at the University of East Anglia, and the aim is to provide an unparalleled opportunity for British and Japanese undergraduate students to study archaeology and heritage together, taught by leading scholars in these fields. This endeavour is just the first step in greater involvement in virtual heritage studies, building on foundations laid at the Centre’s inaugural events on Virtual Cities back in 2011.

The Centre for Archaeology and Heritage was also busy in the United States, at the Society for American Archaeology meetings in Florida, where Dr Sam Nixon spoke on the new AHRC-funded research project Global Perspectives in British Archaeology, along with our Handa Jomon Archaeology Fellow Dr Yoshida Yasuyuki from the Kanazawa University. Dr Yoshida currently leads the graduate programme in Cultural Resource Studies at Kanazawa, and in early June 2016 we were able to visit the Kanazawa University with the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and SISJAC Management Board member Professor Yvonne Tasker, to explore further collaboration with the city known as ‘Little Kyoto’. Simon Kaner was also involved in organising two sessions at the Society for East Asian Archaeology, which held its two-yearly meetings in Boston and Harvard, on the Archaeology of Religion and Medieval archaeology in East Asia.

Major research projects continue, including researching the historic landscapes of the Shinano

River. In 2015 we received support from the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature and the Small Scale Economies project directed by Professor Habu Junko (University of California at Berkeley), and investigated some of the contemporary dimensions of heritage in the region, in particular in the context of the tenth anniversary of the 2004 Chuetsu Earthquake. The highlight of summer 2016 was the concluding of the world’s first formal twinning of archaeological sites, between the Hoshikuso Prehistoric Obsidian Mines in Nagawa-machi, Nagano Prefecture, and Grimes Graves Neolithic Flint Mines in Thetford, Norfolk, associated with further bilateral exchanges.

In 2016 we bade farewell to Dr Matsuda Akira, Lecturer in Japanese Artistic Heritage in the School of Art History and World Art Studies (latterly the School

of Art, Media and American Studies) since 2011. Dr Matsuda has returned now to his alma mater, the University of Tokyo, to take up a lectureship in Cultural Resource Studies. Our PhD student, Mary Redfern, successfully defended her PhD on the importation of western ceramics to the Meiji court, and took up a position as Curator of the East Asian Collections at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, which coincidentally was the focus of a research trip by Fellows and staff from the Institute in the spring of 2015. This trip took in the Japanese art treasures at the Chester Beatty, as well as the World Heritage wonders of the Boyne River, including the Neolithic burial facilities of Newgrange, Knowth

and Dowth.

考古・文化遺産学センターにとって、多忙ながらも日欧考古 学研究の繋がりをさらに深めることができた一年となりまし た。セインズベリー研究所と東京大学の連携による第一回東 京大学文学部冬期特別プログラムの参加者をノリッチに迎え ました。また今年、何人かのセンター関係者がノリッチを去 りましたが、一方で、新たな出会いもありました。

センターの活動の全容については、本研究所のホームペー ジよりご覧いただけます。サイモン・ケイナーを中心とする センターのメンバーは、主要な考古学国際会議に積極的に参 加したほか、論文を発表し、研究会も数多く主催しました。

セルビアの首都ベオグラードでの中石器時代ヨーロッパ学会 に参加した際には、本研究所前客員研究員・谷口康浩教授と ともに、ドナウ河畔に位置する中石器時代の漁村レペンスキ・ ビル遺跡で研究会を主催しました。この研究会は、多くの日 本人縄文考古学者とヨーロッパの考古学者が初めて一堂に 会した画期的な学会「縄文からスター・カーへ」の開催から ２０年後に実施されたことになります。研究会にはヨーク大 学のオリバー・クレイグ教授も参加しました。クレイグ教授 とセンターは、芸術・人文リサーチカウンシル(AHRC)の助 成により、縄文土器に残る食物残滓の共同研究を進めていま す。また、センターとヨーク大学の繋がりはIN-PACEセミナー シリーズを通してさらに深まりました。研究所の 客員研究員

であると同時にヨーク大学でマリー・キュリー・スクウォド フスカ・フェローに就任している庄田慎矢博士が指揮をとり、 １年間を通じて、庄田博士が所属する奈良国立文化財研究所 から５名の専門家がノリッチ、ロンドン、ヨークで開催され たこの連続セミナーに参加しました。本セミナー・シリーズ はロンドン大学アジア・アフリカ研究学院とセインズベリー 研究所の共同研究プロジェクトであり、学院のシャーロット・ ホーリック博士が共催者を務めています。

2015年11月には再びドイツのテュービンゲン大学を訪れ、 ウェルナー・シュタインハウス客員研究員が企画した「グロー バルな視点からみた墳墓」と称したワークショップに参加し ました。本ワークショップでは、最新のオンライン版日独英 考古学用語辞典の発表も行っています。

日本での活動としては、2015年11月にイーストアングリ ア大学学長デビット・リチャードソン教授が初訪日した機会 に、東京六本木の国際文化会館に於いて本研究所と東京大学 の提携で4年間にわたり実施する「冬期特別プログラム」用

に準備されたオンラインレクチャーの一部をお披露目しまし

た。このプログラムは、研究所の上級研究員サム・ニクソン 博士がイーストアングリア大学のITスタッフの協力を得て考 案し、英国の考古学や文化遺産分野を中心に５週間のオンラ インコースを提供するものです。日英両国の大学学部学生が

第一線で活躍する学者達から考古学と文化遺産学を学ぶとい う、他に類を見ない機会を提供することを目的としています。 このプログラムは、2011年のセンター設立時に企画したバー チャル・シティ（仮想都市）を起点として発展したものであ り、バーチャル・ヘリテージ・スタディ（仮想文化遺産研究） 分野に、センターが今後より一層深くかかわっていく上での 第一歩となります。

フロリダ州で開催されたアメリカ考古学協会学会では、本 研究所の上級研究員サム・ニクソンと金沢大学の吉田泰幸博 士（本年度ハンダ日本考古学フェロー）が、英国考古学をグ ローバルな視点から研究するAHRC助成の新規プロジェクト について発表しました。吉田博士は金沢大学で文化資源学の 大学院課程を指導しており、2016年６月には、「小京都」と して知られるこの都市との協力関係をさらに深めるために、 ケイナー・センター長は、イーストアングリア大学人文学部 長兼セインズベリー研究所理事会準メンバーのイヴォンヌ・ タスカー教授とともに金沢大学を訪問しました。更に、ケイ ナーは、東アジア考古学協会が2016年6月にボストンとハー バードで開催した宗教考古学と東アジアの中世考古学の学会 で、二つの研究会を主催しました。

信濃川沿いの歴史的景観の変遷調査を含め、センターが 主導する主要な研究プロジェクトは現在も継続しています。

2015年には、羽生淳子教授（カリフォルニア大学バークレー 校）が率いる総合地球環境学研究所・小規模経済プロジェク トの援助を受け、2004年に中越地震に見舞われた地域の文 化遺産の現状を調査しました。また、何と言っても2016年 夏のハイライトは、長野県長和町にある星糞峠黒曜石原産地 遺跡とノーフォーク州セットフォード町に位置する新石器時 代のフリント石の産地、グライムスグレイブズが国際姉妹都 市提携を結んだことです。この提携は、考古学遺跡同士が正 式な提携を結んだ世界初の事例となりました。

松田陽客員研究員は、2011年から日本芸術遺産を指導し ていたイーストアングリア大学美術史・世界芸術学部（現 芸 術・メディア、アメリカ研究学部）を昨年去り、現在、母校 の東京大学で文化資源学の准教授を務めています。また研究 所の大学院生、メアリー・レッドファーンは、明治の皇室が 使用した西洋陶磁器の研究で博士号を取得し、2015年10月 よりダブリンのチェスター・ビーティー図書館で東アジア担 当学芸員として活躍しています。 2015年春の研修旅行とし て、研究所フェローとスタッフは、チェスター・ビーティー 図書館を訪れました。この研修旅行では図書館が所蔵する日 本美術作品の鑑賞に加え、ニューグレンジ、ノウス、ダウス の新石器時代大型石室墓に代表されるボイン川の世界遺産を 巡りました。

JAPANESE CONTEMPORARY VISUAL MEDIA

At the Sainsbury Institute, one of our many aims is to examine how Japanese arts and culture can contribute to engaging with important issues faced by society. We place a strong emphasis on working in collaboration with institutions in the UK, Europe and Japan to maximise the impact of our activities. With these broad objectives in mind, a wide variety of research-led outreach programs took place in the field of Japanese contemporary visual media during the year covered by this report.

Tokyo’s successful bid to host the 2020 Olympics provided us with an opportunity to examine and reassess developments that have taken place in the city of Tokyo from the start of Japan’s modernisation period and over the ensuing one hundred or more years. This project, titled ‘Tokyo Futures: 1868-2020’, and comprising a six-part lecture-series, was carried out in collaboration with three other institutions: the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute (MIRI); the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS); and the Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nations (TrAIN) at the University of the Arts London, which led the project. Six lectures under three broad themes of ‘Nature’, ‘City’ and ‘The Arts’ were presented in Japan and in the UK between April 2015 and March 2016.

November 2015 saw the second of our annual Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science, usually held in two venues in Norwich and London: This year

the lectures had the title of ‘Beauty and the Robot: Future Innovative Collaboration between Science and Design’, and the venues were the Norwich Cathedral Hostry and the Science Museum, London. The lectures were delivered jointly by Professor Furuta Takayuki, a leading scientist, and Professor Yamanaka Shunji, a leading designer, who have collaborated on a number of fascinating robotics projects. The professors envisage their robots as playing a major role in the way society functions, for example helping with the challenges posed by a super-aging society, or improving support for disabled people – as well as being deployed in high-risk tasks such as the dismantling and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. The lectures included participation by Professors Furuta and Yamanaka’s robot creations, and vividly demonstrated the potential for robots to be made a useful and interesting part of our everyday lives.

Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science

In December 2015, a one day international conference held at the Norwich Cathedral Hostry, exploring the ambitious contemporary art festivals in rural Japan, offered suggestions on dealing with aging and depopulating communities. The event, titled ‘Contemporary Art, Social Activism and Social Crisis in Japan: Echigo-Tsumari, Setouchi and Beyond’, was organised by Professor Adrian Favell, Chair in Sociology and Social Theory at the University of Leeds and a Professorial Academic Associate of SISJAC. The keynote speaker was Mr Fram Kitagawa, a renowned art director, who has initiated and indeed produced many of these festivals. Curators, artists and academics from Japan and the UK engaged in a passionate discussion on whether and

how art can be effective in dealing with the issues faced by society in Japan and other developed countries.

Contemporary Art, Social Activism and Social Crisis in Japan: Echigo-Tsumari, Setouchi and Beyond

Finally, our collaborative manga publication project led by Dr Ryan Holmberg, in coordination with Breakdown Press, has produced a fascinating new line-up of manga works that are featured in the publications section of this report.

セインズベリー研究所の目的のひとつとして、社会が抱える重要 な課題を解決する上で、日本芸術・文化がどのようにかかわり、 貢献しているのかを考察することがあります。また、研究所の活 動でを最大限効果的に実施するために、英国、ヨーロッパ、日本 の機関との協力に力を注いでいます。本年度もこのような目的を 念頭に、現代日本視覚メディア分野での研究成果を広く紹介する 様々なプログラムを実施しました。

2020年夏期オリンピック・パラリンピック開催地は東京に決定 しました。研究所はこの招致を機に、日本が近代化の道を歩み始 めてから百数十年間にもたらされた東京という都市の発展につい て検証し再評価するプロジェクトを企画しました。「東京-未来へ の歴史 1868-2010」と題するこのプロジェクトは、全６回の講演 シリーズで、ロンドン芸術大学トランスナショナル・アート研究 所（TrAIN）、明治神宮国際神道研究所、ロンドン大学アジア・ア フリカ研究学院（SOAS）の三機関との共同企画です。６回の講演 は「自然」「都市」「芸術」という３つのテーマのもと、2015年４ 月から2016年3月の一年間にわたり日本と英国で開催されました。

2015年11月には、ノリッチ大聖堂講堂とロンドン科学博物館 において、第二回日本芸術・科学に関する東芝レクチャーを開催 しました。「美とロボット：科学とデザイン〜ともに未来へ」と称 した第二回レクチャーでは、現代を代表するロボット科学研究者

の古田貴之教授とデザイナーの山中俊治教授が発表をおこないま した。数々の画期的なロボット工学プロジェクトを共同開発され ている両氏は、高齢化社会が提起する様々な問題への対応、障害 者支援の改善、原子力発電所の解体や閉鎖にともなう危険性の高 い任務への利用など、ロボットがこれからの社会で重要な役割を 担っていくと指摘されています。講演には両教授が共同開発した ロボットも登場し、日常生活を有益で楽しいものにするにあたっ て、ロボットが活躍する可能性を見事に証明しました。

2015年12月にノリッチ大聖堂講堂で開催した学会「コンテン ポラリー・アート、社会運動、社会の窮状」では、日本の村落で 催される意欲的な現代芸術祭をとりあげ、過疎・高齢化に直面す

る地域社会への取り組みについて提言しました。本学 会はリーズ大学のエイドリアン・ファベル教授（セイ ンズベリー研究所客員研究教授）が企画し、著名なアー ト・ディレクターとして、日本における芸術祭を多数 手がけてきた北川フラム氏が基調講演を行いました。 はたして、芸術は日本や先進国社会が抱える問題の対 策に役に立つのか、それはどのようにして可能になる のか、という課題について日本と英国から参加した学 芸員、芸術家、研究者たちは活発な議論を交わしまし た。

Scholars who become our fellows have the opportunity to work on their own research and publication programmes in the fields of Japanese arts, contemporary visual media and archaeology, as well as delivering public lectures and organising workshops at the Institute, adding considerably to the Institute’s research culture. All of our Fellows have gone on to make landmark contributions in their fields, with excellent teaching careers and acclaimed publications.

ROBERT AND LISA SAINSBURY FELLOWSHIPS

Established in 2000 through the generous funding of Lord Sainsbury of Turville, these fellowships provide recipients with the opportunity to work in a scholarly environment conducive to completing a publication project.

The Institute offers several Fellowships of either six months or one year, to scholars who, in principle, have received a PhD in any area of Japanese culture, although preference is given to applications focusing on the history of art, cultural heritage, archaeology or architecture. Fellows are given office space at the Norwich headquarters.

ROBERT AND LISA SAINSBURY FELLOWS

2015-16

KIMURA TADAKAZU CBE

Kimura Tadakazu was the Institute’s Senior Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellow from January to July 2016. He is an experienced journalist and former President and CEO of the leading Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun. Kimura received the Award of Tokyo Art Director Club (ADC) in 2009 and was decorated Honorary Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for his longtime contribution to enhance the UK-Japan relationships in 2014.

Kimura used his fellowship to increase his knowledge of the future of the modern nation state system, continuously threatened by a wave of runaway globalisation and IT innovations. Another area of major interest for him is the role of media in promoting democratisation and mutual understanding among the diverse global community.

He gave the May 2016 Third Thursday Lecture ‘The Japanese Newspaper Past and Present – its troubled legacy in the pre-war era and its new challenges’.

ロバート＆リサ・セインズベリー・フェロー (2015—2016年度)

木村伊量氏CBE

2016年１月から７月までシニア・ロバート＆リサ・ セインズベリー・フェローとして在籍した木村伊量氏 は、経験豊富なジャーナリストであり、朝日新聞社前 代表取締役社長を務められました。2009年にADC賞 （東京アートディレクターズクラブ授与）を受賞し、 2014年には長年にわたる日英関係強化への貢献に対 し、英国政府より大英帝国勲章CBEが授与されていま す。

フェロー在籍中は、急速に広がるグローバル化の波 とIT革命に晒されている現代国家制度の今後について 研究を進めました。木村氏はまた、多様性に富む国際 社会において相互理解を促進し、民主化を押し進める 上でのメディアの役割についても研究されています。 　2016年５月の第三木曜日講演会では、「日本の新聞 の過去・現在–戦前禍根と新たな課題」という題の講 演を行いました。

DR RADU LECA

PhD, SOAS, 2015

Radu Leca is an art historian, focusing on the lateseventeenth-century impact of representations on the vernacular experience of space in Japan, expressed by the concept of the spatial imaginary.

His interest in cartographic sources was met by SISJAC’s extensive collection of historical maps donated by Sir Hugh and Lady Cortazzi, close examination of which is feeding into a forthcoming monograph on the spatial imaginary of early modern Japan. This collection was also the focus of a symposium, ‘Isles of Gold Revisited: New Approaches to the Study of Early Modern Maps’, that Radu organised at the Sainsbury Institute in June 2016. He gave the April 2016 Third Thursday Lecture ‘Myriad Countries: The Outside World on Historical Maps of Japan’.

DR SEUNG YEON SANG

PhD, Boston University, 2016

Seung Yeon Sang is an historian of Japanese art with particular focus on the Japanese practice of appreciating and collecting ceramics in chanoyu. Her primary research interests are transnational forms of ceramic production, the impact of Japan’s modern transformations on aesthetics and history-writing, and the meaning and uses of the museum. Her dissertation examined the trajectory of ceramic scholarship in modern Japan from its emergence in the 1910s to the first pinnacle of its development from 1924 to 1931.

She organised an international workshop ‘The History of Art Collecting and Patronage in Chanoyu (Japanese tea ceremony)’ in June 2016 and gave the June 2016 Third Thursday Lecture ‘The New Way of Tea and its Art in Modern Japan’.

ラドゥ・レカ博士

ロンドン大学アジア・アフリカ研究学院博士課程 2015年修了

ラドゥ・レカ博士は日本美術史の専門家として絵画・ 挿絵・地図などの空間表象を対象に17世紀後期の日 本視覚文化における空間想像について研究していま す。地図資料に関心を持つレカ氏は、サー・ヒュー・コー タッツィ及びレイディー・コータッツィが研究所に寄 付された古地図コレクションを精査し、その成果は近 刊予定の近代日本の空間想像に関する研究論文に活か されています。 　コータッツィ古地図コレクションは2016年６月の シンポジウム「黄金の島再訪：近代地図研究への新た なアプローチ」の主要な研究対象となりました。また、 レカ博士は2016年4月の第三木曜日講演会では「坤 輿万国:日本古地図に描かれた世界」というタイトル で講演しています。

スン・ヨン・サン博士

ボストン大学博士課程2016年修了

スン・ヨン・サン博士は、日本での茶の湯における陶 磁器の評価と蒐集の研究をしています。国境を越えた 焼物生産、日本の近代化が美意識と史料編纂にもたら した影響、そして博物館の意義と効用などを研究主 題としています。博士論文では、1910年代に芽生え 1924年から1931年に最盛期を迎えた、近代日本の陶 磁器研究の軌跡を考察しました。

2016年6月には「茶の湯における蒐集と保護の歴史」 という国際ワークショップを企画開催し、同月の第三 木曜日講演会では「近代日本の茶道と芸術」について 講演しました。

DR TSUCHIKANE YASUKO

PhD, Columbia University, 2009

Tsuchikane Yasuko teaches as an adjunct assistant professor at Cooper Union in New York. One of her major interests is to investigate Japanese modern artists’ engagement, beyond the art world that comprised art professionals, with other social sectors committed to patronising, producing and evaluating specific types of art with their respective social, political and ideological agendas unlimited by solely artistic concerns. Currently, her focus is the interdisciplinary examination of art history and religious studies of the parties dedicated to the production and reception of modern art in historical Buddhist temples, which she is exploring through her current book project for Brill on a Nihonga artist, Domoto Insho.

She spent her fellowship developing a book manuscript, tentatively entitled, ‘Domoto Insho and the “Sacred Art World”: the Making of Modern Temple Art in the Twentieth Century’. The book will introduce and analyse the patronage and social functions of Japan’s twentieth century art works produced for medieval Buddhist temples by focusing on the case of a single artist, Domoto, a painter whose career has been understudied.

Dr Tsuchikane’s Third Thursday Lecture in March 2016 was on ‘What Can “Religion” be in Art and Architecture in Modernity? Some Thoughts on Kyoto/Japan and Norwich/ England’.

HANDA JAPANESE ARCHAEOLOGY FELLOW DR YOSHIDA YASUYUKI

PhD, Archaeology, Nagoya University, 2008

Yoshida Yasuyuki is an archaeologist working on a number of research projects that investigate Japanese prehistoric Jomon culture, Southeast Asian prehistory, and archaeology and contemporary society. He is concurrently based at the Centre for Cultural Resource Studies, Kanazawa University, and at the Kanazawa University Graduate School as project associate professor to coordinate the Graduate Programme in Cultural Resource Management, Human and Socio-Environmental Studies.

During his year as a Handa Japanese Archaeology Fellow, he promoted current research on the characteristic ‘richness’ of Jomon culture and Japanese archaeology to an international audience. He set up three objectives: to introduce Jomon as an affluent prehistoric culture to the English-speaking world, to pave the way for access to mass data on Japanese archaeology for non-Japanese archaeologists and to expand the possibilities of study of relationship between archaeology and contemporary society.

土金康子博士

コロンビア大学博士課程2009年修了 土金博士は、ニューヨークのクーパーユニオンで助教 授（非常勤）として教鞭をとっています。主要研究分 野の一つとして、美術界の枠を越えた業界と近現代の 日本画家のかかわりについての研究があります。パト ロン、生産者、鑑定家など美術に携わる専門家たちは、 美術への純粋な関心に限らず、それぞれの社会・政治・ 理念的思惑を抱きつつ美術に関わっており、その関連 性に興味を持っています。現在は美術史と宗教学とい う異なる学問分野をまたがるテーマを研究しており、 特に近現代美術作品の制作と受容に従事した伝統ある 仏教寺院について探求しています。この研究成果は、 現在準備中の堂本印象についての著書（ブリル出版社 から刊行予定）にて論じられます。

本フェローシップ在籍中、上述の著書「堂本印象と 『聖なる美の世界』：20世紀における寺院芸術制作（仮 題）」の原稿執筆を進めました。本著は、中世に建立 された寺院に納める目的で20世紀に制作された日本 美術作品のパトロネージュと、そのような作品が持つ 社会的機能について、画歴の研究が遅れている堂本印 象に焦点をあてて分析しています。

２０１６年３月には月例の第三木曜日講演会で「近現 代芸術における『宗教』を語る試み：京都とノリッチ の比較を通して」という題目で講演しました。

吉田泰幸博士

名古屋大学考古学専攻博士課程2008年修了　 吉田氏は、日本列島先史時代の縄文文化、東南アジア 先史学、考古学と現代社会というテーマを追求する 様々な研究プロジェクトを手がけています。金沢大学 国際文化資源学研究センターと金沢大学大学院での任 務を兼任し、特任准教授として人間社会環境研究科で 文化資源マネジメントのプログラムを担当していま す。

ハンダ日本考古学フェローとして研究所に在籍中 は、縄文文化の特徴である「豊かさ」ならびに日本考 古学についての研究を日本国外に広く紹介しました。 吉田氏はフェロー期間中、（１）豊かな先史文化として の縄文文化を英語圏社会に紹介する、（２）日本人以 外の考古学者が膨大な日本考古学データにアクセスで きる道を拓く、（３）考古学と現代社会の関係性を研 究する可能性を広げる、という三つの目標をもって活 動しました。

ハンダ日本考古学フェロー

SOTHEBY’S SENIOR SCHOLAR DR ASANO SHUGO

Dr Asano is a leading art historian who specialises in the areas of history of pre-modern Japanese paintings (ukiyo-e and genre painting, fūzoku-ga), history of Japanese woodblock prints, and illustrated books of Edo period. The Sainsbury Institute has previously worked with him on assessing the ukiyo-e collection of the Museum of Asian Art, Corfu where he identified some very important works. He is currently the Director of two museums in Japan, namely, the Abeno Harukas Art Museum in Osaka and the Museum Yamato Bunkakan in Nara.

Dr Asano shared his expertise with our academic staff and other scholars in the UK, including helping with research led by Tim Clark for a major exhibition on Hokusai which opened at the British Museum in May 2017. During his time in the UK he also assisted with a survey on the Japanese prints collection of the Maidstone Museum in Kent.

浅野秀剛博士

浅野氏は、近世日本絵画（浮世絵、風俗画）、版画、 江戸時代の読本を専門とする著名な美術史研究者で す。本研究所とともにギリシャ国立コルフ・アジア美 術館所蔵の浮世絵コレクション調査を行った際には、 この美術館で眠っていた貴重な作品を確認していま す。現在は大阪あべのハルカス美術館館長と奈良大和 文華館館長を兼任されており、国際浮世絵学会の理事 長も務めています。

浅野氏は、英国内の研究者達と共同研究を行なって おり、大英博物館で2017年５月から８月に開催され る葛飾北斎特別展にむけてのティム・クラーク氏との 研究はそのひとつです。また、サザビーズ・シニア・ スカラーとして英国滞在中、ケント州のメードストー ン博物館が所蔵する日本浮世絵コレクションの調査も 行いました。

LISA SAINSBURY LIBRARY

The Lisa Sainsbury Library, located at the Norwich headquarters of the Institute, holds books, journals, exhibition catalogues, slides, prints, maps and other materials relating to all aspects of Japanese arts and cultures. Its collections include general introductory works and key reference materials in English and Japanese. The aim is to support research by staff and students in Japanese applied arts and ceramics, archaeology, material culture and trade, cultural heritage and architecture, as well as East Asian cultural history, archaeology and art history. These collections rank among the best in Europe in their fields, and they complement other existing Japanese collections in the UK. The Library catalogue is fully accessible online through the Institute’s website, as is the database of high-resolution images of the Cortazzi Collection of early Japanese maps and ukiyo-e, created in conjunction with the Art Research Center at Ritsumeikan University.

Our Librarian, Hirano Akira, is actively engaged in networking with libraries around the world that have Japan-related collections, and is also Honorary Librarian of the Japanese Section, Department of Asia at the British Museum. We are pleased to be continuing our exchange programme with Keio University Media Centre and we welcomed our fourth librarian from Keio University, who was seconded to the Sainsbury Institute in the autumn of 2015, Kuramochi Takashi.

FRIENDS OF THE SAINSBURY INSTITUTE

TOSHIBA LECTURES IN JAPANESE ART AND SCIENCE

The Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science lecture series ran for three years from 2014 to 2016, and were one of the Sainsbury Institute’s core outreach activities in the UK.

This idea of this lecture series has been to focus on how the two disciplines of art and science have long been intimately linked in Japan, and the various ways in which this linkage has found expression in Japan’s modernisation period; and equally importantly how monozukuri (‘making things’, ‘production’, ‘craftsmanship’), has been a strongly esteemed mind-set and value in Japan from Edo times.

The Sainsbury Institute is extremely grateful to the Toshiba International Foundation for its generosity in supporting these lectures.

In the second year of our Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science, two leading figures in the field of robotics visited the Sainsbury Institute to discuss their achievements, which have, in the words of one of them, involved both ‘making things’ and ‘making things happen.’ The audience listened spellbound while Professor Furuta Takayuki and Professor Yamanaka Shunji provided us with a rare glimpse into the intellectual design and production process involved in creating robots which, they argue, will come to play ever more vital roles in society. The evening also welcomed a special guest, Halluc IIχ, a semiautonomous mobility robot from Japan.

2014年から2016年までの３年間にわたり開催された 日本芸術・科学に関する東芝レクチャー・シリーズは、 本研究所の英国内における啓発活動の旗艦事業の一つ です。

本シリーズでは、芸術と科学が、古くから日本にお いていかに密接に関係してきたかという点に着目し、 日本近代化の時代に多様な形をとって発現した、この 二つの分野の間の繋がりや、江戸時代以降の日本にお いて尊重され高く評価されてきた「ものづくり精神」 についても焦点をあてました。

このレクチャー・シリーズ実現への東芝国際交流財 団の多大なご支援に感謝申し上げます。

第二回目のレクチャー・シリーズでは、ロボット工 学界から古田貴之教授と山中俊治教授という著名な研 究者二名が「ものづくり」と「実現する力」につい て自らの業績を交えて語りました。知的デザインとロ ボット製造という日頃馴染みの薄い世界の一端を垣間 見、聴衆は講演に聞き入っていました。両教授によれ ば、ロボットは今後の社会に於いてますます重要な役 割を担っていくことが予想されます。また講演には日 本からの特別ゲストとして、両教授の共同作品である 半自律移動ロボットHalluc IIχも登場しました。

STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2016

This summary of the Sainsbury Institute’s finances is an extract from the financial statements approved by the Institute’s Management Board after the end of each financial year.

Note 1 The creation of a Strategic Reserve Fund and a Development Fund to receive donations are parts the Institute’s response to the plans of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation to spend out its capital in the medium term and eventually to bring its annual grant funding to an end. A Friends’ scheme was launched in 2012-13 and the subscriptions are kept in a separate fund which may be used to contribute to the cost of Friends’ events. The building maintenance sinking fund is a provision for long-term maintenance and/or building repairs. At the end of 2015-16 the total amounts held in Funds were: Strategic Reserve £610,213; Development £7,316, Friends’ Membership £12,134, Building maintenance £20,000; Carmen Blacker Lecture Fund £23,394.

Note 2 Part of the balances carried forward at the end of each financial year covers expenditure commitments on projects which span more than one year.

本セインズベリー日本藝術研究所財務概要は、各会計年度終了後、当研究所執行理事会にて承認された 財務諸表に基づくものである。

中期的に資金を全て使い切り、最終的には年間助成金を打ち切るというギャツビー財団の計画を受けて、計画的保留金ならびに、寄 付金の受け皿として支援開拓積立金が新設された。友の会は2012-13年度に開設し、会費は会員の為の行事に充てられており、別途 積立金として管理されている。建物維持費は施設の長期的な維持・修理のための減価償却積立金。 2015-16年度末時点での保留金残高は以下の通り：計画的保留金 £610,213; 支援開拓積立金 £7,316; 友の会会費積立金 £12,134; 建 物維持費£20,000; カーメン・ブラッカー資金 £23,394。

注２： 各会計年度末に次年度に繰り越される資金の一部は、多年プロジェクトにかかる予算である
