SAINSBURY INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF JAPANESE ARTS AND CULTURES

The Sainsbury Institute was founded in 1999 through the generosity of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury to promote the knowledge and understanding of Japanese arts and cultures. The mission of the Sainsbury Institute is to promote world-class research and to be a leader in the study of Japanese arts and cultures from the past to the present. Working with our academic partners and funders, the Institute furthers its mission through:

• creating collaborative and active global research networks; and

• disseminating the results of our research; while

• advancing outreach and educational activities

The Institute continues its close collaboration with institutional partners including the University of East Anglia (UEA), the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, the British Museum, and other organisations in the UK, Japan and Europe. It maintains a rich programme of research, fellowships, public lectures and international workshops; and is committed to widely disseminating the fruits of its scholarship and research activities through its website www.sainsbury-institute.org and its e-magazine.

セインズベリー日本藝術研究所は、その使命を果たすために、研究協 力機関及び支援者との連携を通じて、以下の目標を達成することを目指 します。

FOREWORD BY THE CHAIR OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD

The year covered by this report coincides with my first year as ex officio Chair of the Management Board of the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures. During the year, and also as a result of my first official visit to Japan in November 2015, I have been delighted to learn more about the range and impact of the Institute’s research, outreach and educational work; and to appreciate the extremely high esteem in which it is held in this county and abroad. The achievements of this small team – as evidenced in this and previous annual reports – are impressive, and it is worth noting that its senior members also have additional important responsibilities at the University of East Anglia and at the British Museum.

The Sainsbury Institute is guided at a strategic level by its Management Board, whose members give freely of their time and considerable expertise. I take this opportunity to thank them all and to pay particular tribute to two long-serving members who retired from the Board in 2015. Mr Graham Greene CBE was one of the first members of the Board and he played an important part in guiding the development of the Sainsbury Institute in its early years. Professor Paul Webley CBE joined the Board in 2006 following his appointment as Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and he became a passionate supporter of SISJAC and its close association with SOAS. He retired as Director of SOAS in September 2015 and stood down as a member of the Management Board at the same time although, with characteristic generosity, he agreed to continue to serve on our Development Committee. Sadly he passed away in March 2016 after a long illness. Paul Webley was a distinguished academic and an inspirational leader; we will miss him and his insightful contributions to our Management Board meetings. His successor as Director of SOAS, Baroness Valerie Amos, now joins the Management Board and we look forward to welcoming her.

Since its foundation in 1999, the Institute has been based in the Cathedral Close, Norwich. The lease on its building ends in 2019 and, as noted in last year’s annual report, the Management Board has been considering options for the future, in consultation with the University. As a result the Institute will move to the campus of the University of East Anglia, Norwich where it will join the other two art benefactions from the late Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury –the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (SCVA) and the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas (SRU). This plan has the agreement of Lord David Sainsbury,

the son of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury, and we thank him and the Trustees of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation for their continuing generous support for the Institute.

The Sainsbury Institute has an enviable track record across its activities, and a strong reputation regionally, nationally and internationally. The Management Board envisages many opportunities in the relocation to further develop research and educational activities, and we will ensure that the Sainsbury Institute continues to flourish in the period leading up to the relocation at UEA and thereafter.

本年報の対象期間である2014-15年度は、私がセインズベリー日本藝 術研究所理事長に就任した年でした。2015年11月には、私にとっては 初体験となる日本への公式訪問を行い、研究・啓発・教育の分野におけ る本研究所の活動の幅広さとその影響力、そして本研究所に対する英国 内及び海外からの評価の高さを知る機会に恵まれました。これまでに発 行された年報が示すように、本研究所における少数精鋭の所員は素晴ら しい功績を残しています。また管理職所員は、イーストアングリア大学 や大英博物館においても重要な役割を負っていることにも言及しておく 必要があるでしょう。

セインズベリー日本藝術研究所の戦略的なリーダーシップは執行理事 会が担っており、そのメンバーはそれぞれの時間と豊富な専門知識を惜 しみなく注ぎ込んでくださっています。メンバーの皆様にはこの場をか りて御礼申し上げます。また2015年には、長年にわたり執行理事会に 貢献していただいたメンバー2人が退任しました。グラハム・グリーン 氏CBEは執行理事会の創立当初からのメンバーであり、セインズベリー 日本藝術研究所における初期の発展に多大なる貢献を果たした人物です。 ポール・ウエッブリー教授CBEはロンドン大学東洋アフリカ研究学院 （SOAS）学長就任直後の2006年より執行理事会に参加し、本研究所と SOASの関係構築にご尽力いただきました。2015年9月にSOAS学長を退 任したことに伴い、本研究所の執行理事会メンバーからも退任すること になりましたが、寛大にも本研究所の啓発委員会には引続き従事いただ けることになっていました。同氏が長期にわたる闘病の末、2016年3月 に死去されたことが悔やまれてなりません。ポール・ウエッブリー氏は 傑出した研究者であり、力強く優れた指導者でもありました。同氏の死 に対してお悔やみ申し上げるとともに、執行理事会に対する同氏の貢献 に改めて感謝致します。SOAS学長後任のヴァレリー・エイモス女男爵が、 本研究所執行理事会メンバーの役割も学長就任と同時に引継いでくださ いました。メンバー一同、同氏の執行理事会参画を心より歓迎いたします。 　1999年の創立以来、本研究所はノリッチ大聖堂近くに本拠を構えて活 動してきました。この研究所建物の賃貸契約期間が2019年に満了となり ます。昨年に発行された年報でも報告申し上げた通り、執行理事会では イーストアングリア大学との協議を通じて、今後の選択肢について検討 を重ねてきました。その結果、本研究所は同大学のキャンパス内に移転 することが決定しました。イングランド東部ノリッチにあるこのキャン パス内には、本研究所と同じくサー・ロバート及びリサ・セインズベリー ご夫妻の資金援助によって設立されたセインズベリー視覚美術センター

とセインズベリー・アフリカ・オセアニア・アメリカ芸術研究所があり ます。この計画に賛同を示してくれたサー・ロバート及びリサ・セイン ズベリーご夫妻のご子息であるデビッド・セインズベリー卿と、本研究 所への財政支援を続けていただいているギャッツビー財団に改めて御礼 申し上げます。本研究所は、その様々な活動において、目を見張るよう な業績を残し、地元、国内、海外から高い評価を受けてきました。執行 理事会としては、新天地において研究や教育活動を拡張させ、本研究所 がさらなる発展を遂げるよう努めていく所存です。

STATEMENT BY THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The academic year 2014–15 was yet another exciting and innovative year for the Sainsbury Institute, one in which we embarked on several new, thrilling initiatives. In particular, we decided to add to our established selection of lecture series, inspired by the success of our Carmen Blacker Lecture series and Ishibashi Foundation Lecture series.

Concluding our decade-long series of Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Culture, we began a new series, the Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science. These were launched with three fascinating lectures, each on distinct topics, delivered by Professor Suzuki Kazuyoshi from the National Museum of Nature and Science, Tokyo, in which he investigated the roots of modern Japanese science and technology in Edo-period Japan. We also instituted a new UK-Japan Lecture series, a project drawing on a partnership with the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute in Japan, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and the Research Centre for Transnational Art, Ideology and Nation at the University of Arts London. This year, six lectures (three in Tokyo, three in London) under the broad title of ‘Tokyo Futures, 1868-2020’, were delivered with the objective of looking into Japan’s past to find clues that might prove helpful in pondering the country’s future, as we head towards the second Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

We also welcomed a record number of Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellows this year, with five scholars conducting their research while based in Norwich. Some of these Fellows were young scholars who had just obtained their PhD degrees, but we were also honoured to be joined by the distinguished senior scholar Professor Edward Kamens, Sumitomo Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University. All of our Fellows delivered a Third Thursday Lecture, and some of them also organised workshops around their research themes, details of which can be found in this report.

We will continue to expand our research-related activities and to deliver diverse outreach and educational programs, as we prepare for our relocation to the UEA campus in 2019, a year in which we shall also celebrate our twentieth anniversary.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude to our patrons and supporters without whom none of the projects described above would have been possible. My sincere thanks to you all.

セインズベリー日本藝術研究所では2014-15年度も、様々な新規事 業などに取り組むことを通して、大変充実した、また刺激ある一年と なりました。とりわけ、カーメン・ブラッカー・レクチャー・シリー ズと石橋財団レクチャー・シリーズの成功を受けて、さらなる講演事 業の開催が決定したことは特筆すべきことです。

日本美術・文化における新たな研究成果を一般の方々に発表する機 会として10年にわたり継続してきた東芝レクチャー・シリーズに代 わり、新たに日本の芸術と科学技術に焦点を当てた東芝レクチャー・ シリーズを開始しました。同シリーズの初回には、江戸時代に見られ た近代日本の科学技術の起源を探るため、国立科学博物館の鈴木一義 教授が3回にわたって異なるテーマで講演しました。また明治神宮国 際神道文化研究所、ロンドン大学東洋アフリカ研究学院（SOAS）、そ してロンドン芸術大学のトランスナショナル・アート研究所とのパー トナーシップを基にした事業として、英日レクチャー・シリーズを始 めました。本事業では、シリーズ・タイトルを「東京 -- 未来への歴史 1868－2020」と銘打ち、2020年に東京で2回目となる五輪の開催に 向けて、過去を見つめ直すことを通じて日本の将来を計画するための ヒントを得ることを目的とした 6回の講演（東京にて3回、ロンドン にて3回）が行われました。

また本年度は、ロバート & リサ・セインズベリー・フェローシップ 制度を通じて、過去最高である5名の研究者を迎えた年でもあります。 フェローに選ばれた研究者の中には、博士号を取得したばかりの若手 研究者も含まれている一方で、著名な研究者として知られるイェール 大学東アジア言語・文学研究科のエドワード・ケーメンズ教授もフェ ローとして迎えるという栄誉に恵まれました。フェローにはそれぞれ 第三木曜日講演会シリーズでの講演を行っていただいており、また各 自の研究テーマにちなんだワークショップを主宰したフェローもいま す。その詳細については本年報に記載されています。

本研究所では、設立20周年にあたる2019年にイーストアングリア 大学キャンパス内へ移転するに向けて、今後も研究関連活動を拡張し、 様々な啓発及び教育プログラムを実施していく所存です。

この機会を借りて、本研究所をご支援いただいている皆様に御礼を 申し上げます。皆様のご協力があってこそ前述の事業が実現しました。 心より感謝いたします。 水鳥真美

ART AND CULTURAL RESOURCES

The research area of Art and Cultural Resources is led by the Institute’s Research Director, Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere.

The Sainsbury Institute has been the centre of a large number of exciting art-based initiatives, spearheaded in large part by our Fellows. The fruits of their research and workshops are listed elsewhere in this report but it should be emphasised that, while the intellectual and physical centre of the Institute is firmly placed in Norwich, events held throughout the UK and in Japan reach a wide, international audience and help disseminate the important research undertaken by the Fellows.

As a result of these activities, the Sainsbury Institute has become a vital part of a much larger scholarly network and its activities have flourished as well. Activities in the area of art and cultural resources included a workshop on ‘Creativity in Contemporary Japan: Art, Industry and the Everyday’, a symposium on ‘Deconstructing Boundaries: Is “East Asian Art History” possible?’ and the start of the lecture series ‘Tokyo Futures, 1868-2020’. Several publications have resulted from research carried out by Fellows and others associated with SISJAC, such as Dr Christine Guth’s Hokusai’s Great Wave (University of Hawai’i Press, 2015).

The Sainsbury Institute’s impact on Japanese arts and cultures in the UK is going from strength to strength.

One of the important events of the Institute is the Third Thursday Lecture series, held every month since 2000. The list of lectures shows the sheer diversity of research being undertaken at the Institute. The series started out as a kind

Research forms a major part of the Sainsbury Institute’s core mission and objectives and has three main strands: Art and Cultural Resources, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage and Contemporary Visual Media.

セインズベリー研究所の使命及び目的において研究活動 は大きな位置を占めています。この活動は、日本美術・ 文化資源、日本考古学と文化遺産学、現代日本視覚メディ アの3つの領域に分かれています。

日本美術・文化資源

美術と文化的資源についての研究は、研究担当所長を務めるニコル・ クーリッジ・ルマニエール教授の指導の下で行われています。 　セインズベリー研究所では、主に本研究所のフェローが主宰する数 多くの美術関連事業を実施しています。こうした研究やワークショッ プの成果については、本年報内の該当箇所よりご覧いただけます。　 　セインズベリー研究所はノリッチを拠点として活動を展開していま す。しかし、その研究成果は英国全土及び日本において開催されるイ ベントを通して、より広範に国を超えて発信しており、本研究所のフェ ローが取り組んだ重要な研究の内容を広めるための一助となっていま す。 　こうした活動を通じて、セインズベリー研究所はさらに広範な学術 ネットワークを築き上げ、またそれぞれの活動がさらなる発展を遂げ るという好循環を生み出してきました。美術および文化資産の領域に おける活動には、「現代日本の創造性: 美術、産業、そして日常」をテー マとしたワークショップや、「境界の脱構築:『東アジア史』の編纂は 可能か」と題したシンポジウム、さらには「東京 – 未来への歴史　 1868－2020」という講演シリーズを開始したことなどが含まれます。 またフェローや本研究所と連携したその他の研究者による研究には出 版に至ったものもあります。クリスティーン・グース氏による「Hokusai’s Great Wave」（ハワイ大学出版、2015年）はその一例です。英国にお ける日本美術および文化研究にセインズベリー研究所が与える影響は 強まっていく一方であると言えるでしょう。

本研究所が開催するイベントの中で最も重要なものの一つが、2000 年より毎月開催されている第三木曜日講演会シリーズです。その多彩 な講義内容は、本研究所が取り組んでいる研究の多様性を反映してい ます。本シリーズは創作版画の先駆者である恩地孝四郎に倣う形で開 始されました。

恩地は1939年、様々な芸術家を月1回の頻度で自宅に呼び寄せ、 版画についての議論を行う「一木会」を1939年に始めました。この

of homage to Onchi Koshiro (1891–1955), the father of the sosaku hanga (creative print) movement in Japan. In 1939 Onchi founded the Ichimoku-kai (literally, First Thursday Society), which held artist gatherings once a month in his house to discuss subjects of prints. The meetings continued even during World War II and the ensuing Occupation, and were an important source of comradeship and inspiration to aspiring young artists. The Third Thursday Lectures have become a similar vehicle for the exchange of information and ideas, and making the fruits of the Sainsbury Institute research available to the community at large in the Norfolk area.

As the IFAC Handa Curator of Japanese Arts at the British Museum, Professor Rousmaniere spends a great deal of her time furthering projects undertaken there. These include the twice-annual rotations of the Mitsubishi Corporation Japanese Galleries and yearly Asahi Shimbun Display exhibits, as well as curatorial upkeep, acquisitions of the 3D materials in the Japanese collections and welcoming visitors to the Japanese Galleries from Japan. Professor Rousmaniere gave a lecture at the Gardiner Museum’s 30th Anniversary Lecture Series in November 2014 on ‘The Importance of Being Kakiemon: The Origin and International Impact of the Kakiemon Style’. The topic will become the focus of an Asahi Shimbun Display exhibit at the British Museum in June–August 2016.

Professor Rousmaniere made several important acquisitions for the British Museum, especially in contemporary works. One new work, an inlaid wooden box, represents a new collecting field for the Museum. The artist, Suda Kenji, from Gunma Prefecture, is the youngest designated Living National Treasure in Japan. He creates one major work a year and is now represented in the British Museum’s collections.

Professor Rousmaniere gave a number of talks and participated in symposiums in Japan and in the UK. She gave the keynote lecture at the conference ‘Promotion and Utilization for Japanese Art in American and European Museums’ organised by the Tokyo National Museum in November 2014; and participated in a lecture with the maki-e urushi artist and designated Living National Treasure Murose Kazumi at the International House of Japan in Tokyo. She continues to conduct handling sessions at the British Museum and to give lectures and gallery talks there.

Professor Rousmaniere is now in the process of completing her book Desire and Diplomacy, 400 Years of Japanese Porcelain, based on the British Museum’s extensive collections and her long-time research. Her other recent publications include an article in 30 Objects 30 Insights, published by the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, articles on ceramics and on manga, and two essays, on Lady Sainsbury and SISJAC, which will be published by the Japan Society in Britain and Japan: Biographical Portraits.

会合は第二次大戦とその後の占領期間中も継続され、若手芸術家たち が交友を広げ、刺激を得るための重要な機会になったと伝えられてい ます。第三木曜日講演会シリーズも同様に、情報と意見を交換し、さ らには本研究所における研究の成果をノーフォーク地域社会と共有す るための場所となりました。

大英博物館のIFAC ハンダ日本美術キュレーターであるルマニエー ル教授は、同館が取り組む事業展開のために尽力しています。同館で の任務には、三菱商事日本ギャラリーにおける半年ごとの展示替えや、 年1度の朝日新聞ディスプレイにおける特別展の担当に加えて、キュ レーターとして所蔵作品の保護管理と新たな日本関連作品の収蔵 、日 本ギャラリーを訪れる日本からの来訪者の対応などが含まれます。ル マニエール教授は2014年11月、ガーディナー陶磁器博物館の30周 年記念講演会シリーズにおいて「柿右衛門様式の重要性: その起源と 国際的な影響」と題した講演を行いました。この講演で扱った内容は、 2016年6月から8月、大英博物館の朝日新聞ディスプレイで開催さ れる特別展示の中核をなすこととなります。

ルマニエール教授は、これまで日本や英国で多数の講演を行い、ま たシンポジウムにも参加してきました。2014年11月には、「米欧ミュー ジアムの日本美術コレクションとその活用」と題した東京国立博物館 主催のシンポジウムで基調講演を担当しました。また、漆芸家で蒔絵 の分野で重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）に認定されている室瀬和 美氏と共に、東京の国際文化会館で行われた講演会に参加しました。 大英博物館でのイベントの運営業務と並行して、引続き同館において 講演やギャラリー・トークなども行っています。

ルマニエール教授は現在、大英博物館の膨大なコレクションと 彼女の長年の研究を基にした著書「Desire and Diplomacy, 400 Years of Japanese Porcelain」の完成に向けて執筆を続けている最中です。その 他にも、トロントのガーディナー陶磁器博物館が出版した「30 Objects 30 Insights」掲載の論文や、陶磁器や漫画に関する記事、さらには英国 日本協会から出版予定の「Britain and Japan: Biographical Portraits」に掲載 されるリサ・セインズベリー夫人と本研究所についての論文の執筆な ども手掛けています。

ARCHAEOLOGY AND HERITAGE

This year, while continuing with ongoing research projects, ranging from historical ecology to surveying the Kofun collections at the British Museum, the Sainsbury Institute focused on ways of further promoting Japanese archaeology and nurturing international collaboration in the wider field. We continue to pioneer innovative ways of attracting new audiences.

The launch of the Online Resource in Japanese Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (www.orjach.org) in September 2014 marked a new engagement for the Institute with secondary schools. The content of this website includes nine modules introducing different aspects of Japanese archaeology and cultural heritage, an interactive map and model teaching plans. Our team, including Nakamura Oki, former Handa Japanese Archaeology Fellow, and Don Henson, previously Head of Education at the Council for British Archaeology, has developed this resource over the past two years, sponsored by Hitachi Europe Ltd and Hitachi Solutions Europe Ltd.

Dr Simon Kaner, Head of the Centre for Archaeology and Heritage at the Sainsbury Institute, was invited to give lectures on Japanese archaeology in various countries in Europe and further afield. At the Central European University in Budapest, home to an important Centre for Medieval Studies, Dr Kaner spoke on the archaeology of medieval towns in Japan and Europe. He also gave a lecture to the Maltese Archaeological Society, in Valetta, Malta, on flame pots and figurines from Jomon Japan. Malta boasts an exceptional Neolithic civilisation providing fascinating comparators for Japanese Jomon material. Other visits were to Oregon and Beijing, where he took part in an ongoing series of collaborative workshops on the cultural ecology of ancient East Asia.

In October 2014 Dr Kaner and Dr Oliver Craig of the University of York gave two lectures for the second Ishibashi Foundation Lecture Series at the Tokyo National Museum. The lectures explored the history of relations between Japanese and British archaeology, first through the eyes of the nineteenth-century ‘foreign specialist’ William Gowland, who had a passion for burial mounds, and then through an exploration of the application of cutting-edge archaeological science, which is now revealing what people ate in prehistory, from Jomon Japan to Stonehenge.

In January 2015 a new Senior Research Associate, Dr Sam Nixon, joined the Institute. Dr Nixon is working on developing new programmes and online resources to bridge East Anglian and Japanese archaeology. For some time the Institute has explored the interface of art and archaeology by delving into the connections between manga and archaeology and working with artists inspired by

本年度は歴史的生態学から大英博物館の古墳コレクション調査に至 るまで継続中の研究プロジェクトに引続き取り組むとともに、日本考 古学をさらに促進し、またより広く国際的な協力関係構築に向けて活 動しました。セインズベリー研究所では日本の考古学研究を広めるた めの革新的な方法を模索し続けています。

2014年9月に立ち上げた、日本の考古学と文化遺産についてのオ ンライン・リソース（www.orjach.org）は、中等教育に関する本研究 所の新しい取り組みの成果です。このサイトのコンテンツには、日本 の考古学と文化遺産に関する様々な側面を紹介する9つのモジュール や、インタラクティブ・マップ、教師用の学習指導案などが含まれて います。元ハンダ日本考古学フェローである中村大氏や元イギリス考 古学評議会教育担当のドン・ヘンソン氏等が名を連ねる本事業のチー ムは、日立ヨーロッパ社と日立ソリューションズ ヨーロッパ社の財 政支援を受けて、2年の歳月をかけてこのリソース構築を進めてきま した。

セインズベリー研究所の考古・文化遺産学センター長を務めるサイ モン・ケイナー博士は、欧州諸国などで日本考古学に関する講演依頼 を受けてきました。中世研究センターが置かれているブダペストの中 央ヨーロッパ大学では、日本と欧州の中世都市についての考古学研究 についての講演を実施し、またマルタの首都バレッタにあるマルタ考 古学協会の依頼を受けて、縄文時代の火焔土器や土偶に関する講演を 行いました。マルタは類まれな新石器時代の文明を築いた土地で、日 本の縄文文化と比較研究するのに大変興味深いところです。ケイナー 博士は、オレゴンや北京でも、既に進行中の古代東アジアの文化生態 学に関する共同ワークショップに参加しました。

2014年10月には、ケイナー博士とヨーク大学のオリバー・クレイ グ博士が、東京国立博物館で開催された第2回石橋財団レクチャー・ シリーズにてそれぞれ講演を行いました。この講演では、2つの観点 から考古学における日英関係の歴史を考察しました。まず日本の古墳 に高い関心を持っていた19世紀のお雇い外国人ウィリアム・ガウラ ンドの目を通して、次に日本の縄文時代や英国の先史時代に当時の 人々が何を食べていたかを明らかにする最先端の考古科学の成果検証 を通して、考古学における日英関係というテーマを探りました。 　2015年1月にはサム・ニクソン博士が新たな上級研究員として本 研究所に加わりました。ニクソン博士は、イーストアングリア地域と 日本の考古学の架け橋となるための新規事業やオンライン・リソース の開発に従事しています。

長年にわたり、本研究所は漫画と考古学の関係性を探ったり、古代 日本に影響を受けた芸術家との連携を図ったりすることで、美術と考 古学の関係について考えてきました。本研究所は本年度、2016年に 京都で開催される世界考古学会議に向けての学術的な議論や芸術的分 野からの協力に参画しました。また九州大学人文学部長を務める古谷 嘉章教授が3月に本研究所を訪れ、縄文時代の日本と南アメリカの美 術及び考古学の比較論について発表しました。

考古・文化遺産学センターでは、日英の考古学者が交流を図るため の催しも開催しています。2014年9月にはロンドンの大和日英基金 でワークショップを開催し、英国のイングリッシュ・ヘリテッジと日 本の文化庁の各代表者が日本とイングランドの遺跡の保護のあり方 やその未来について議論を繰り広げました。続いて、2011年の東日 本大震災が考古学および文化遺産に対して現在もなお与えている影響

the ancient Japanese past. This year we have been involved in academic discussions and artistic interventions preparing for the World Archaeological Congress in Kyoto in 2016. Professor Furuya Yoshiaki, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Kyushu, visited us in March and spoke on comparisons in art and archaeology between Jomon Japan and South America.

The Centre for Archaeology and Heritage continues to organise events bringing together Japanese archaeologists with their British counterparts. In September 2014 we held a special workshop at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London at which senior representatives from English Heritage in the UK and the Japanese government’s Agency for Cultural Affairs discussed issues affecting the preservation and future of archaeological remains in Japan and England. This was followed by a public symposium on the continuing impact of the 2011 Great East Japan Disaster on archaeology and cultural heritage. As the Head of the Centre, Dr Kaner visited Fukushima and some of the other affected areas later that autumn, guided by Professor Kikuchi Yoshio, leading to an article in the magazine British Archaeology. This formed part of our ongoing project monitoring ‘Cultural Properties Loss’, which we began with lectures at the Embassy of Japan in London in September 2011.

Finally, it is with deep sadness that we note the death in June 2015 of Professor Matsui Akira, former Director of the Centre for Archaeological Operations at the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. A long-time friend and supporter of the Institute, Professor Matsui lead the ‘Bunkazai Rescue’ project in the immediate aftermath of the Fukushima Disaster in 2011, and did an enormous amount to promote Japanese archaeology internationally

最後に、元奈良文化財研究所埋蔵文化財センター長の松井章教授が 2015年6月に死去されたことをお悔やみとともにお伝え申し上げま す。本研究所を長年にわたり支援くださった松井教授は、2011年の 東日本大震災直後に被災した歴史資料を救う「文化財レスキュー」運 動を牽引しました。また日本の考古学を国際的に広めるため尽力され ました。

JAPANESE CONTEMPORARY VISUAL MEDIA AND PERFORMANCE ART

At the end of the academic year 2013–14 our Sasakawa Lecturer in Contemporary Japanese Visual Media, Dr Ulrich Heinze, who led the Institute’s academic activities in this area since September 2008, relocated to Hamburg, his hometown in Germany. We would like to thank Dr Heinze for his contribution to the Institute. We also thank the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and the Nippon Foundation, which generously supported this post for the first five years. We were delighted to welcome Dr Ryan Holmberg, an art and comics historian, who was appointed as an Academic Associate of the Institute in the autumn of 2014. Dr Holmberg completed his Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowship in the summer of 2014. He is a frequent contributor to Art in America, Artforum, Yishu, and The Comics Journal; and has edited and translated a number of historically important Japanese comics, including Tezuka Osamu’s The Mysterious Underground Men (PictureBox, 2014), winner of the 2014 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material: Asia. Dr Holmberg launched a manga publication project in collaboration with Breakdown Press, to publish seminal manga in English translations. The Man Next Door is a collection of four of Matsumoto’s ‘komaga’ stories, which are here translated into English for the first time. The volume includes an essay by Dr Holmberg on the importance of Matsumoto’s work in the history of Japanese manga, as well as an explanation of ‘komaga’ by the artist himself. Further details can be found in the Publications section of this Annual Report.

This year, we also had an event that was a ‘first’ for the Institute: a performance art event. As part of a workshop organised by Dr Iza Kavedžija, one of our Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellows, the Japanese avant-garde collective Eggore and the painter-performer Tesshu came to Norwich from Osaka to present a unique live painting and dance performance, ‘Neriya Kanaya: The Roots of Beyond’. Inspired by the Japanese contemporary dance tradition of butoh, Eggore explored a range of human emotions and a sense of common humanity through a mesmerising and energetic presentation.

現代日本視覚メディア及びパフォーマンス・ アート

2008年9月より本研究所における関連分野の学術活動を指揮して きた現代日本視覚メディア専攻ササカワ研究員のウルリッヒ・ハイン ツェ博士が、2013－14年度末に彼の故郷であるドイツのハンブルク へと拠点を移しました。ハインツェ博士は本研究所に多大な貢献を果 たしました。同博士が着任した当初の5年間に寛大な支援をいただい たグレイトブリテン・ササカワ財団と日本財団に深甚なる感謝の意を 表します。

The Sainsbury Institute is proud to have a very fine and wellestablished research fellowship programme. Scholars who become our Fellows have the opportunity to work on their own research and publication programmes in the fields of Japanese arts, contemporary visual media and archaeology, as well as delivering public lectures and organising workshops at the Institute, adding considerably to the Institute’s research culture. All of our Fellows have gone on to make landmark contributions in their fields, with excellent teaching careers and acclaimed publications.

ROBERT AND LISA SAINSBURY FELLOWSHIPS

Established in 2000 through the generous funding of Lord Sainsbury of Turville, these fellowships provide recipients with the opportunity to work in a scholarly environment conducive to completing a publication project. The Institute offers both full-year and half-year fellowships to scholars who have received a PhD. Fellows are given office space at the Norwich headquarters.

Associate Professor of Japanese Art History at Sophia University, Tokyo

Dr Hirasawa’s publications focus on medieval and earlymodern Japanese hell paintings, pilgrimage mandalas, and images of salvation. Her book Hell-bent for Heaven in Tateyama Mandara: Painting and Religious Practice at a Japanese Mountain (Brill, 2013) treats the history, literature, and images of a cult that developed around Tateyama mountain (Toyama prefecture) in which the volcanic landscape was seen as a portal to hell and paradise.

Dr Hirasawa gave the April 2015 Third Thursday Lecture: Watching Women Fall in Japanese Hell Painting: Defining Sins and Punishments Specific to Women between the Twelfth and Sixteenth Centuries.

Her academic workshop, co-organised with Dr Lucia Dolce at the School of Oriental and African Studies, From the Ephemeral to the Eternal: Modest Materialities of the Sacred in Japan, was held at the Institute in July 2015.

平澤博士の出版物は、主に中世および近世における日本の地獄絵図、 参詣曼荼羅、救済の様子を描いた絵画などを扱っています。彼女の著 書「Hell-bent for Heaven in Tateyama Mandara: Painting and Religious Practice at a Japanese Mountain」（ブリル社、2013年）では、火山帯が天国と地 獄への入り口と見なされている富山県の立山で発展した歴史、文学、 崇拝の絵画などを取り上げました。

2015年4月の第三木曜日講演シリーズでは「日本の地獄絵図に見 る女性像: 12世紀から16世紀にかけての女性特有の『罪と罰』の定義」 と題した講演を行いました。

DR IZA KAVEDŽIJA

Dr Kavedžija is a social anthropologist whose current research interests centre on the social dimensions of creativity, motivation, life choices and wellbeing. Her fellowship project was based on an ethnographic study of a group of young contemporary artists in Osaka, focusing on their experiences of the creative process as well as their ideas of meaningful work and a good life.

In June 2015 she organised a live painting performance, Neriya kanaya: The Roots of Beyond. The Japanese avantgarde collective Eggore and the painter-performer Tesshu presented an energetic painting and music performance to delve into an ancient future: a sense of the world as it once was, and may one day be again. This was followed by a one-day academic workshop at the Institute, Creativity in Contemporary Japan: Art, Industry and the Everyday, which explored the creative process in various cultural domains in Japan. Later in the same month, Dr. Kavedžija gave a Third Thursday Lecture on The Work of Art: an Ethnography of Contemporary Art Production in Osaka

Dr Kavedžija continues her association with the Institute as an Academic Associate.

DR ERIKO TOMIZAWA-KAY

Dr Tomizawa-Kay specialises in Nihonga, Japanese-style painting. She was co-organiser of the International Japanese Modern Art History Symposium (JAMAHS) held at SOAS in June 2013. Following the completion of her doctorate, she was awarded an Andrew W. カヴェジヤ博士は、創造性、モチベーション、人生における選択肢、 幸福度といった社会分野についての研究を行っている社会人類学者で す。フェロー期間中は、大阪の若手現代アーティストたちについて民 族学の観点から研究し、彼らが体験する創造プロセスや彼らにとって やりがいのある仕事、あるいは良い人生とは何かを調査しました。 　2015年6月にはペインティングのライブ・パフォーマンス「ネリ ヤカナヤ: The Roots of Beyond」を開催しています。このイベントでは、 日本のアバンギャルド・ユニットであるEggoreと画家・パフォーマー の鉄秀が情熱的なペインティング（舞描）と音楽のパフォーマンスを 通じて、かつてあった世界が再び現れるかもしれないという感覚を基 にした「古代未来」の様子を表現しました。翌日は本研究所にて学術 ワークショップ「現代日本の創造性:　芸術、産業、そして日常」を行い、 日本の様々な文化領域における創造プロセスを探りました。

また同月下旬には第三木曜日講演会シリーズで「芸術作品: 大阪に おける現代アート創造に関する民族学的考察」と題した講演を行いま した。現在は本研究所の客員研究員を務めています。

Associate Professor of East Asian Studies, University of Arizona

Dr Pinnington teaches Japanese literature at the University of Arizona. He trained as a Hindu priest in his youth before taking up a career in computer sciences. After several years in Tokyo he returned to academia, studying at Waseda and SOAS before gaining his PhD in medieval Japanese thought at the University of Cambridge in 1993.

Dr Pinnington’s interests include Japanese literature, poetry and theories of the arts. He used his tenure at the Sainsbury Institute to investigate the sixteenth-century revolution in comic performance (Kyogen), and he gave the May 2015 Third Thursday Lecture on The Crystalisation of Kyogen, Japan’s Classical Comedy: Refinement or Loss of Vigour. He is currently writing a history of Japanese medieval performance. His last monograph was Traces in the Way: Michi and the Writings of Komparu Zenchiku (Cornell East Asia Series, 2006) in which he elucidated the theories of the fifteenth-century Japanese Noh performer. His recent articles include ‘The Early History of the Noh Play: Literacy, Authorship, and Scriptedness’, Monumenta Nipponica, 68, 2, 2013; and ‘Buddhist Structures and Secular Themes in Zeami’s Narrative Style’, Journal of Religion in Japan, 2, 2-3 (195-221), 2013.

Professor Shimao is an expert on ink painting with a special focus on Sesshu (1420-1506), the most prominent ink painter of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) in Japan. His research covers a wide area, ranging from the history of ink painting, including its origins in China, to contemporary ink painting in the whole of East Asia, and he has published numerous books, essays and articles on these subjects.

LISA SAINSBURY LIBRARY

The Lisa Sainsbury Library, located at the Norwich headquarters of the Institute, holds books, journals, exhibition catalogues, slides, prints, maps and other materials relating to all aspects of Japanese arts and cultures. Its collections include general introductory works and key reference materials in English and Japanese. Its study collections support research by staff and students in Japanese applied arts and ceramics, archaeology, material culture and trade, cultural heritage and architecture, as well as East Asian cultural history, archaeology and art history. These collections rank among the best in Europe in their fields, and they complement other existing Japanese collections in the UK. The Library catalogue is fully accessible online through the Institute’s website, as is the database of high-resolution images of the Cortazzi Collection of early Japanese maps and ukiyo-e, created in conjunction with the Art Research Center at Ritsumeikan University.

Our Librarian, Hirano Akira, is actively engaged in networking with libraries related to Japanese studies throughout the UK and Europe and is also Honorary Librarian of the Japanese Section, Department of Asia at the British Museum. We are very happy to be continuing our exchange programme with Keio University Mita Media Centre and we welcomed our third librarian from Keio University, Asao Chikako, who was seconded to the Institute, in the autumn of 2014 and our fourth, Kuramochi Takashi, in the autumn of 2015.

研究所のリサ・セインズベリー圖書館は、書籍、雑誌、展覧会図録、 スライド、版画、地図、その他の資料を収蔵し、その内容は、日本の 芸術・文化のほぼ全ての領域にわたっています。資料は、入門書や日 英両語の主要参考書のような基礎レベルの一般用書籍から、日本の美 術・工芸、考古学、物質文化・交易、文化遺産、建築関連をはじめと して、東アジアの文化史、考古学、美術史などの分野も含めて、研究 所の研究員やフェローによる学術研究に必要な高度な研究用書籍まで を含む幅広い内容になっています。リサ・セインズベリー圖書館の蔵 書は欧州屈指の日本美術・文化関連の学術資源であり、英国内の他の 図書館が所有する日本関連の一般的蔵書を補強する役割を果たしてい ます。図書館目録は研究所のホームページを通してすべて検索可能で す。さらにコータッツィ日本古地図・浮世絵コレクションの高画質デー タベースも、立命館大学アートリサーチセンターの協力を得て、検索 が可能となっています。

図書館司書を務める平野明は、図書館資料の収集・目録作業のほか、 英国とヨーロッパにおける日本研究図書館の総合目録の構築管理に関 わっています。同氏は、大英博物館アジア部日本セクションの名誉司 書も務めています。また慶應義塾大学三田メディアセンターの研修プ ログラムは引き続き実施されており、同大の司書としては3人目とな る浅尾千夏子氏が2014年秋に、また2015年秋には4人目となる倉持 隆氏が本研究所に滞在され、英国の図書館システムなどについての研 修に従事されました。

The Toshiba Lectures in Japanese Art and Science series, begun in 2014, represents one of the Sainsbury Institute’s core outreach activities in the UK. Continuing on from the decade-long Toshiba Lectures for Japanese Art and Culture, this new lecture series will run for a projected period of three years, focusing on the close links between science and art. The Sainsbury Institute is extremely grateful to the Toshiba International Foundation for its generosity in supporting these lectures.

Professor Suzuki Kazuyoshi’s series of three lectures in 2014 shed light on the expansion of education, discovery, science and the arts in Japan’s early modern period, as well as providing an examination of craft innovation and monozukuri, making of things.

The Carmen Blacker lecture series was established in 2010 to honour the life and work of Dr Carmen Blacker (1924–2009) and is generously supported by a bequest from Carmen Blacker and the executors of her estate. Each year a senior scholar is invited to give two lectures, one in Norwich and one in London, relating to Japanese religion or folklore.

Note 1: The creation of a Strategic Reserve Fund and a Development Fund to receive donations are parts the Institute's response to the plans of the Gatsby Charitable Foundation to spend out its capital in the medium term and eventually to bring its annual grant funding to an end. A Friends' scheme was launched in 2012-3 and the subscriptions are kept in a separate fund which may be used to contribute to the cost of Friends' events. The building maintenance sinking fund is a provision for long-term maintenance and/or building repairs. At the end of 2014-5 the total amounts held in Funds were: Strategic Reserve £510,213; Development £6,855, Friends' Membership £9,391, Building maintenance £20,000; Carmen Blacker Lecture Fund £31,127.

Note 2: Part of the balances carried forward at the end of each financial year covers expenditure commitments on projects which span more than one year.

本研究所はイーストアングリア大学（UEA）と連携して研究活動を行 う非営利団体です。

研究所の財源は理事と執行理事会メンバーの指名のあり方について 規定する信託規約によって管理されています。理事は信託基金の原資 を運用し、その運用益を信託規約に基づいて研究所の運営に当てる責 務を負っています。また執行理事会は、研究所の運営母体として、事 業活動の内容、予算、人事に関する承認権を有しています。

研究所はそれ以外に外部支援団体にも助成を申請し、ワークショッ プや講演会の開催、出版事業やフェローシップ制度の実施等を行って います。また図書館への図書寄贈などの非財政的支援も受けています。 　設立当初から10 年の間は、信託基金からの運用益及びギャッツビー 財団より得る財政支援を全て毎年度の事業に当て、内部留保金を積み 立てないことが慫慂されていました。一方、ギャッツビー財団が中長 期的にはその資本を全て使い切るという目標を設定し、この結果いず れは当研究所への毎年の助成も打ち切られることになることに伴い、 研究所としては、今後財政計画を見直ししていくことが必要となって います。かかる状況の中で、研究所は節約に努めて内部留保を積み 立てていくとともに、収益をもたらす事業取組みに努力しています。 2015年7月31日締めの年次事業会計決算報告書では、50万ポンド以 上の戦略的留保金が積み立てられていることが示されています。この 積立金の一部は2019年、イーストアングリア大学キャンパス内移転 に際して発生する費用の一部に充てることができると見込まれていま す。 DetailfromPlanduportetdelavilledeNagasaki, Paris, 1763. MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE

2014－2015年度事業会計決算報告書（2014年8月1日―2015年7月31日）

本セインズベリー日本藝術研究所財務概要は、各会計年度終了後、当研究所執行理事会にて承認された財務諸表に基づくものである。

The Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures was founded in 1999 though the generosity of Sir Robert Sainsbury and Lady Lisa Sainsbury. It is an independent charity affiliated to the University of East Anglia (UEA).

The funding of the Institute is governed by a Trust Deed that provides for the appointment of Trustees and a Management Board. The Trustees have the responsibility for investing the original Trust Fund and applying the income to support the costs of running of the Institute in accordance with the provisions of the Trust Deed. The Management Board acts as the governing body of the Institute, agreeing the nature of its activities and approving its budget and staffing.

The Institute raises funds from other sources to support workshops, publications, lectures, fellowships and other projects. It also receives non-financial donations, especially library materials and other support in kind.

The Institute is expected to manage its activities within the grants and other income available to it and, during its first decade, was encouraged to deploy the funds available each year and not to build a financial reserve. Although the Institute’s income from its endowment and from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation will continue to be used primarily for funding current activity, the decision by the Foundation to spend out its capital in the medium term and eventually to bring its annual grant funding to an end, requires the Institute to develop plans to replace that core funding. In these circumstances, building a financial reserve to be used to pump-prime income generating initiatives and to ease the transition is a necessary strategic objective. The Statement of Financial Activities for the year ended 31 July 2015 shows that a strategic reserve of over £0.5m has been built up, which will help meet some of the costs which it is expected will be incurred in the move of the Institute to the UEA campus in 2019.
