Morning's at seven...
God's in His heaven. All's right with the world!
This familiar quote from a Robert Browning poem captures the tranquility of warm September days in a town that could be Kalamazoo. In fact, the playwright, Paul Osborn, grew up in Michigan. And the local legend has it that permission to produce Morning's At Seven in Kalamazoo was not granted until the people the play is about, Osborn's family, had passed away. And that the actual homes of those family members could be identified within blocks of this theatre.
As the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre approaches its 100th anniversary in 2029, we are looking back. This season sees the production of two plays that acknowledge the theatre's history. The Kalamazoo Civic was the first theatre outside of New York City granted permission, back in 1961, to produce A Raisin in the Sun, which was so successfully revived this January on the Auditorium stage. And Morning's At Seven's revival here in the Carver Studio honors the creation in 2006 of the Senior Class Reader's Theatre Program which included this play in its very first season. The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre celebrating 100 years of producing theatre in our community. All's right with the world!

RJ Soule (Playback Operator) has lived in Kalamazoo since 1987, though he had a 2-year hiatus in Houston. He has been involved in several shows at the Civic, both onstage and off, but his favorite show he’s done at the Civic was once of his own pieces, The Episodic Life, performed at the Parish Theatre last year. When not at the theatre, RJ enjoys mountain hiking.
Kris Tyrrell (Director) moved to Kalamazoo over 50 years ago from her native Chicago to join the Civic’s internship program and never left. Since then, Kris has performed in over 100 roles at virtually every theatre in Kalamazoo as well as serving in every possible role on technical crews. Making what feels like the inevitable segue to directing, she has helmed productions for our Mainstage, Carver Center Studio, and Parish Theatre, as well as for Whole Art Theatre, and API theatre. Most recently seen in Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express as Helen Hubbard, Kris hesitates to choose a favorite role. She has been featured in Arsenic and Old Lace twice, once as a senior in high school and once as a genuine senior. Kris has also played both female roles in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? In productions 20 years apart. Instrumental in establishing our Senior Class Reader’s Theatre, including last year’s production of Leaving Iowa. Kristin is the proud recipient of the Larkin Noble Award, Spirit of the Civic Award, and Robert McKenna Award from the Community Theatre Association of Michigan.
