Director's Note

Without giving away too much, like age, I am a child of the ‘60s, born and raised in Chicago during the birth of the Civil Rights Movement led primarily by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and brought straight to the doorstep of Mayor Richard J. Daley. I witnessed kids I walked to school with disappear one by one overnight, as their parents fled the Brainard neighborhood and the supposed anger of their community and moved in the night.

But, it brought about a community of Black families who had an opportunity to access homes therein, all fueled by real estate agents who frightened the white population into believing their homes would be worthless if they waited to sell. Since we lived at the western edge of our parish, my parents chose to stay for 3 more years so my sister could graduate from 8th grade at the same school. I graduated with 2 Black girls in our class, while she graduated as 1 of 2 white girls in her class. 27,000 white families fled in 3 years.

The roots of racism run deep and long, like the roots of a dead tree that will not fall. We enact legislation that calls for change, but change in people’s hearts cannot be legislated. Racism to me, first and foremost, is about loss, and fear, and the anxiety of facing change. All is in flux. Times today regarding race are just as heated as they were in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and we are all still here. The pendulum continues to swing. As we learn to accept and treat each as we would be treated, racism will still exist, but it cannot overwhelm love.

My deepest appreciation for all the cast and crew of this important show.

At the 2019 AACT Fest he and Jack Reed were given the state award for Best Ensemble for their performances in Red.Dan notes that Clybourne Park is extremely timely given recent cultural events, and the efforts to restrict and push back freedoms won during the past half century. “Dedicated to my wife Linda Stieve, my true home and priceless treasure.”

Nora Hauk* (Betsy/Lindsey) holds a B.A. in theatre arts from Kalamazoo College and an M.A. in anthropology from University of Michigan. Favorite roles at Kalamazoo College include Rosalind in As You Like It and Anna in Pinter's Old Times. As an anthropology PhD student, she conducted several years of research in Seoul, South Korea, funded by Fulbright, Blakemore Freeman Foundation, Critical Language Scholarship, and Social Science Research Council. She has studied improv at Pointless School of Improv (Ann Arbor) and Crawlspace Comedy Theatre (Kalamazoo). Most importantly, she is a parent of two children.

Scott Holmgren* (Jim/Tom/Kenneth) is making his civic debut in this production and is studying pre-med at Western Michigan University. Having lived in Kalamazoo since last August, he is originally from Lima, Ohio. Past theatre credits include Mary Poppins (Robertson Ay), You Can’t Take it With You (Tony Kirby), Newsies (Albert), Peter and the Star Catcher (Smee), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Joseph), and The Addams Family (Uncle Fester). Last seen pre-covid in the Civic production of Romance Guaranteed, favorite roles include Chris in Calendar Girls, and Queen Elizabeth the first in Elizabeth Rex. “Thanks to Parker, Staci and all my soul family.”

Krista Roberson* (Francine/Lena) (she/her/hers)

The fine arts have always been in her blood, theater being no exception. Being the daughter of Marlyce Roberson-McCants, the late Rev. Rodney Tyiska and (bonus daughter of) Rev. Dr. John H. McCants, Jr. the stage had always been a special place. Her first mainstage debut was back in November 1997 for Once on This Island under the Civic Black Theater. Since then, her theater involvement has been mainly as a stagehand in various productions and shows. She has recently participated in shows with Queer Theater Kalamazoo and All Ears Theater. She would like to recognize all her friends, co-workers, and family for all the encouragement and support.

Mitch Voss (Karl/Steve) is thrilled to return to the Kalamazoo Civic stage! Kalamazoo Civic credits include Richard III, Richard III; Lennie, Of Mice and Men; MacDuff, Macbeth; Don Pedro, Much Ado About Nothing; Bellhop, Lend Me a Tenor. Mitch has performed professionally with Farmers Alley Theatre (Escanaba in Da Moonlight, A Few Good Men; A Man of No Importance), Tibbits Opera House, and Kentucky Shakespeare. In 2018, Mitch returned to WMU as an alumni guest artist to play Roy Cohn in ANGELS IN AMERICA: MILLENIUM APPROACHES. “Thank you to our amazing director, Mary, this incredible cast and crew, and my wonderful Mom for her constant love and support.”
