Discover Independents at Reston Town Center

Some may be surprised at the quantity of independent retailers at Reston Town Center— small businesses that earn their living here, and for many years. To gain overdue recognition, they’ve banded together to create Small Business Support Sundays as a way for locals to get to know these retailers and offering chances to taste, learn, and get savings. Led by Leslie Combemale, co-owner of ArtInsights Gallery of Film and Contemporary Art, the initiative began in June with an aim to reach more local residents by highlighting quantity and quality—and to have some fun. Some of the larger shops and restaurants are also supporting the initiative, as many of those retail managers are local residents. Some chains are D.C. region only and quite independently operated. Also in support of SBSS, popular restaurants are hosting Sunday happy hours and family dining specials.

BE A PART OF

Something Amazing!

Reston is home to one of the emerging global film festivals - and we’re all invited! Beyond the red carpets, Oscar-nominated films, and worldclass independent filmmakers, the Washington West Film Festival is a movement of hope for under-resourced communities. When a ticket is purchased to the Washington West Film Festival, those funds are used to do something amazing. The audience members themselves become story-creators as Washington West gives 100% of all box office net proceeds to projects which solve problems of childhood hunger, illness, and limited education in the DC region and around the world. The box office proceeds recipient in 2015 and 2016 is the DC-based Robert Duvall Children’s Fund. The Washington West Film Festival is a noteworthy occasion, worthy of marking your calendars. In previous years, the festival has hosted Q&As with Hollywood legends Julia LouisDreyfus, Robert Duvall, Ed Asner, and Christopher Lloyd; Academy Award-winning producer Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook, American Beauty, Big Fish, Milk); and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Bob Woodward and Ron Suskind. The festival has screened films produced by Frank

Marshall (Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, The Sixth Sense, The Goonies); Tom Hanks; and Bill Plympton; and films featuring Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones); Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family); Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins); and Matthew Modine (Stranger Things). Our 2017 line-up includes films produced by Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU); musician, activist, and filmmaker Common (Academy Award, Grammy, and Golden Globe winner); director, producer, and Academy Awardnominated cinematographer Bradford Young (Selma, Arrival, and the new untitled Han Solo film); Stanford Professor Jamie Meltzer; Emmy, Peabody, and Academy Award-winner Geeta Gandbhir; and Ava DuVernay (13th, Selma, A Wrinkle in Time). Films and events are open to the general public and will take place at Reston Town Center’s Bow Tie Cinemas, Reston Community Center’s CenterStage and with additional screenings in Arlington. Our Opening Night Film and Reception, Pavilion Party, and Closing Night are our hottest tickets. Be sure to mark your calendars for September 28 when tickets go on sale.

Unity in Live Theatre:

Reston Actors Give Rise to “Family-Like” Performing Community by Lauren Magnussen

There has never been a more important time for the unifying benefits of theatre than this moment. In challenging and dividing political times—which the Northern Virginia area feels so keenly—theatre has the ability to bring people together and solidify connections. Two local actors—one a veteran, the other a burgeoning talent—can attest to the way that theatre allows them to forge links with members of their town. Jennifer Lambert, a Reston resident who recently starred in NextStop Theatre Company’s popular production of Urinetown, The Musical, embodies the tie between locality and performance: “I’ve been working in local theatre in the Reston/Herndon area for about 15 years now… performers who consistently work in the area form special bonds with loyal audience members. There’s a comfort level and a tight knit community that forms from being familiar with each other.” Theatre transcends the stage and extends its reach out into the community that fosters it. Lambert has been involved at all levels of theatre in the area, from ardent supporter in the audience, to director of children’s holiday shows, from award winning performances in volunteer productions with Reston Community Players to professional roles at NextStop Theatre. Her dual role as a performer and supporter of theatre exemplifies the communal experience, one where the line between actor and audience is often blurred: “Performers recognize audience members almost as much as the audience recognizes the individual performers.” Another NextStop alum, William Price, of Reston, concurs: “It’s awesome to show up at an audition and see other actors that you’ve met through different shows. It’s like a theatre family.” William, a young man who has worked professionally in theatre, already observes how theatre allows us to form new relationships as much as it celebrates or excoriates current issues. The sense of unification that comes from a shared theatrical experience is an important way to nurture cultural growth and unity. In promoting local art, our neighborhoods around Reston are well poised to unite their residents through theatre, and both Jennifer and William are likely to continue inspiring (and being inspired by) their community.

Lambert adds, “everyone benefits from the community that theatre builds.”

PUBLIC ART RESTON

celebrates 10 Year Anniversary

Public Art Reston (formerly the Initiative for Public Art-Reston, IPAR), a non-profit with a mission to inspire an ongoing commitment to public art and create a new generation of artworks in Reston, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In recognition of the accomplishments of its first decade, the nonprofit has moved on from “Initiative” and officially changed its name to Public Art Reston. A bold rebranding is underway! The organization was established in 2007 through the vision of community leaders, notably Joe Ritchey, Ann Rodriguez, and John Alciati. They were following in the footsteps of Reston founder, Robert E. Simon Jr. who integrated public art in the original plans for his “New Town.” At the inception of Lake Anne Village Center, Simon commissioned sculptor, Gonzalo Fonseca and architect, James S. Rossant to create play settings and whimsical sculptures at Washington Plaza and the North Shore Drive underpass. Both structures remain and continue to delight young and old today. 14

The Public Art Master Plan for Reston laid out the specific needs for public art in Reston and designated a nonprofit organization to oversee, care for, and commission artworks. Since then, Public Art Reston, in collaboration with community organizations, has commissioned permanent and temporary artworks in every corner of Reston from sweeping sculptures to mosaic-covered underpasses to artist-designed fountains. Public Art Reston hosts annual community events, artist talks, public art walks, and film screenings throughout the year. On September 16, Public Art Reston, in partnership with Reston Town Center, will present the annual ChalkFest at RTC. This popular street festival transforms Market Street with chalk art masterpieces drawn by amateur and professional artists alike. All are invited to participate. “Reston is fortunate to have Public Art Reston. Its community- and arts-oriented volunteers curate so many and varied public art works of wonder for all to enjoy. Much has been achieved in its 10 years; the next 10 should be even more dynamic,” states Maggie Parker, chairman of the Public Art Reston Board of Directors. Public Art Reston will host its Annual Reception this winter at an exciting new dining venue in Reston (date and location to be announced). This fund- and friend-raiser will celebrate the achievements of the past decade as well as future visions. Information about the event can be found at www.publicartreston.org. Elements at ArtSpace Herndon

ArtSpace Herndon, located in historic downtown Herndon, is a gallery and performance venue created and supported by art lovers in the greater Herndon area. Join Reston resident, Andy Black and Herndon resident, Mercia Hobson as they exhibit their artistic journey using materials of the earth—August 8-September 2. CONTRIBUTER: Michelle Pepino

ANDY BLACK As a child, Andy often sketched, drew cartoons, and copied the comics from the Sunday paper. Having known he wanted to be a graphic designer since middle school, he continued illustrating throughout his childhood and college days. In the late 1980’s, Andy began another form of art that was solely centered on painted wood constructions. “Wood has always been something that’s just kind of spoken to me” says Andy. In Andy’s earlier work, the wood surface was decorated with paint and found objects; the paint was always opaque and layered thickly. His earlier pieces were fairly large in size. However, after creating a scale model of a design, he modified his style and began creating smaller pieces—one to two feet long or wide. Andy feels a strong connection to vibrant turquoise, pink, orange, yellow, and red so he incorporates these colors into his works often giving off a Southwestern ambience. Recently, Andy has taken to a technique called polychrome. With polychrome, the paint is rubbed into the surface and becomes more of a stain allowing the wood’s grain to show through. He’s also returned to constructing more linear larger pieces. Rather than wood being just a framework for constructing shapes, he’s accentuating the wood. Andy states, “It’s a relationship between colored wood and uncolored wood. It’s about celebrating the beauty of wood.” Andy’s earlier and newer pieces show the progression of showcasing the natural materials, juxtaposing the colors as well as the arrangement of the wooden shapes. Andy has been a Reston resident since 1981, enjoys cooking and grilling at home with his wife, Candice, son, mother-in-law and her cat.

MERCIA HOBSON When it comes to art, Mercia believes in persistence. When something she is working on doesn’t seem to go well one way, she tries various ideas to see which one flourishes the best. “I just have to let go and let the clay guide me” says Mercia. This concept is a familiar one with clay, her primary art medium. Mercia first began her ceramic journey with molding and shaping clay on a pottery wheel during her college years.

A reception held during each exhibit provides the public with an opportunity to meet the artists. Artists’ Reception ArtSpace Herndon 750 Center Street, Herndon, VA Saturday August 19th, 2017 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

As Mercia’s wheel skills continued to develop, she wanted to expand her knowledge. She began slab work, a technique of rolling strips of clay to uniform thicknesses and creating vessels to form bowls, platters, and functional ware. She discovered that she enjoyed the process of being one with the clay and not fighting against the centrifugal force of the wheel.

In actuality, slab work and using an extruder hold a bit of “demon” in both of them. Clay always wants to return to its original shape. When cut or extruded and picked up without support, the piece will bend into a drape, returning to its first memory. Mercia says, “Maybe I won’t see it immediately, but that little devil will come out as the form dries from wet clay to leather hard, then to greenware.” Sometimes Mercia dominates in the clay’s tug-of-war, but most of the time the clay wins and becomes something other than what she originally planned. Mercia Hobson has been a Herndon resident since 1988. She is an active advocate for the local arts scene. She is an ArtSpace teacher specializing in special education and vice president of the Board of Directors for the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts. Mercia is a mother to five children and a lives with her husband, Allen.

Journey to the

CENTER

of Creativity As we look forward to cooler temperatures and vibrant colorful leaves, let RCC inspire and stir your artistic soul with innovative programs designed to take you on a personal artistic journey. RCC’s arts education classes offer high-quality visual arts instruction in clay, glass, mosaic and two-dimensional media. In addition to these traditional visual arts explorations, RCC instructors will be presenting two new programs this fall to consider. Music is integral to who we are, where we come from and what we represent. It can be a window revealing our cultural perspective and our preferences are a reflection of the sum of our life experiences. A new RCC arts education program, The Power and Wonder of Music in Our Lives, explores how music affects our moods, emotions and behavior; it covers music’s healing properties; and participants will discover the mysterious yet indisputable links between music, life experiences and memories. Another new option for patrons will awaken creative spirits through journaling and meditation in Mindfulness Painting for Self-Expression. This class uses paint, paper and brushes—combined with a safe and transforming environment—to make art work that emerges from both conscious and subconscious realms via this energizing combination. RCC partners with the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) to expand options for the community. At the GRACE Gallery in Reston Town Center, programs such as GRACE Art Family Day, Thank GRACE It’s Friday (TGIF) and several other workshops are offered. We are excited about a fall season rich with arts opportunities that lead to insight and discovery of the creativity in everyone. Come take the journey with us. www.restoncommunitycenter.com

LAKE ANNE BREW HOUSE: Lake Anne Brew House submitted four beers into the Virginia Craft Beer Cup competition for 2017, and won three medals.

BEER AND COMMUNITY Reston’s Lake Anne Brew House has been a busy place since opening in April 2016. Reston residents, Melissa and Jason Romano purchased the retail space at Washington Plaza, Lake Anne and renovated it, seeking an English pub concept. Jason has been a homebrewer for more than 21 years and is certified by the American Homebrewers Association to judge brewing contests. Melissa, whose professional background is in architecture, did renovation work at the 47-seat facility to make use of Lake Anne’s mid-century Brutalism feel. In addition to bar and inside seating, there is outside seating on the deck overlooking Lake Anne. “We try to really function as a community taproom,” said owner Melissa Romano. Although the family owned business has a focus on small batch craft beer, they keep high aspirations and standards. In May, Virginia Living Magazine named the brewery the “Best Local Craft Brewery” in the state. Lake Anne Brew House submitted four beers into the Virginia Craft Beer Cup competition for 2017, and won three medals. Governor Terry McAuliffe made a visit to LABH in June to celebrate the win!

Our purpose statement: “Brewing Beer. Building Community.” defines our goals... great beer with great people.

While the brewery does not sell food, they have partnered with local restaurants at Lake Anne. As for beers, the couple decided to begin with a flagship line and find out what their clients enjoy. “We decided we would use all hyperlocal Reston names,” Melissa said. Flagship beers include the Live-Work-Play IPA, Reston Red (a twist on traditional Irish red), Brown’s Chapel Brown Ale (dark brown with a caramel malt and light hop balance), Lake Anne Skinny Dip (a German-style kölsch, clean and smooth), and Simon’s Stout, taking its name from Reston founder Robert E. Simon, Jr., who lived at Lake Anne. The brew house also serves craft sodas and kombucha, a fermented tea beverage. Seasonal drinks are introduced throughout the year. In the fall, guests can expect to see Market Fest (an Oktoberfest-style Harvest Ale) make its return, along with a Dunkelweizen, and other fall favorites. “We’ll also scare up another batch of our Snakeden Stout as the cold weather rolls in. Lake Anne Brew House is excited to announce that Lake Anne Plaza will be hosting its first Oktoberfest/Brew and Boos event this fall,” said Romano. by Ryan Dunn @rdunnmedia

Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 35 years Serving Our Community CONTRIBUTOR: Tonia Chagnon On November 4, 2017, the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 35th year. The Chamber started as the Reston Board of Commerce in 1982 by Reston resident, Pat Kane when Reston had a relatively small, but emerging business community. The Reston Chamber is now the 6th largest chamber in the DC area serving members in Northern Virginia, Maryland and DC. With a strong community commitment, the Chamber prides itself on being unabashed business advocates, earning the moniker of “a chamber with a social conscience.” With almost 700 members, the chamber strives to strengthen effectiveness and ties between business and community. Chamber members consistently give back with their time and talents adding strength to Reston’s core belief, “Live, Work, Play.” Karen Cleveland, the first executive director of the Chamber, president of Leadership Fairfax

28

and Reston resident comments, “The Reston Chamber has always been known as the Chamber with a heart. Since the beginning we embraced Reston’s founder, Bob Simon’s vision to create a community where all are welcomed so all can prosper. The Chamber is a critical partner in sustaining that unique culture while positioning Reston for a strong future.” Chamber member businesses make up one of the three legs of the “community stool” by providing housing, jobs, and services. Non-profit and government sectors provide the other two essential legs. The Reston Chamber produces long standing events and programs that benefit both the businesses and the community at large. One of the chamber’s very popular community events is the Taste of Reston. Held each June, Taste of Reston recently celebrated its 27th year. This community give-back provides attendees the opportunity to experience food from local restaurants and visit business

AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

exhibitors while providing companies an opportunity to showcase themselves and build brand awareness. Taste of Reston has earned “Best Outdoor Food Festival in NOVA six times in a row by Virginia Living Magazine. Each year, the event brings tens of thousands of visitors to the Reston community. “Our staff looks forward to volunteering at Taste of Reston and Oktoberfest each year! We find Chamber involvement very rewarding on all fronts.” says Ellen Jennings, CEO of BEI Networks. Ethics Day is another highly respected Chamber program. It was introduced in 1992 by Chuck Veatch, born Restonian and principal of Veatch Commercial. Ethics Day is an educational program held annually in November with the SLHS senior class. South Lakes High School seniors spend the day with 80+ chamber volunteer Room Facilitators and Table Leaders addressing real life ethical dilemmas and behaviors. Using a series of probable scenarios, students review, discuss and reach decisions on numerous topics such as personal relationships, accountability, medical emergencies, texting and driving, and unconscious bias. Laura Kowalski, former student and now a facilitator comments, “As a student participant in Ethics Day, my classmates and I experienced issues that we would not have had to think about in our everyday lives. The message was driven home that at some time in our lives, we may be faced with an ethical decision. Some sessions have followed me into adulthood. Now as a facilitator at Ethics Day, it is fulfilling to see these young adults challenge one another in tough discussions and experience something new. This is a unique experience that has a lasting impact.” Rick Hogan, 20 year Reston resident, Chamber member and CEO of Bleevit Interactive states, “The Chamber is a core part of this community’s vibrancy and diversity of people and business. As the Chamber carries out its mission as the catalyst for business growth, it touches companies large and small and has helped Reston achieve prominence as the center for business in the region.” Celebrating 35 years of supporting business growth and entrepreneurship in the Reston/ Dulles Corridor is certainly a major milestone, however, the Chamber has even more exciting plans ahead! The Chamber is evolving as an “Innovation Chamber.” It is using the newest technologies to innovate the services and delivery method provided to members. As the world changes how it engages in commerce, social activities and overall communications, the Reston Chamber is adapting. Both chamber members and the community benefit.

Reston Citizens Association 50 Years serving the Community CONTRIBUTOR: Reston Citizens Association

In the last few years, Reston has made several top lists: Money Magazine’s top ten best places to live and Data Fox’s number one city for tech grads. For Reston to receive these types of accolades, groups of volunteer citizens, including the Reston Citizens Association, have been working behind the scenes to ensure the community is a destination for residents and employers. In 1967, Gulf Oil took over from Bob Simon as the master developer. Community residents were concerned that their views were being overlooked by the developer, the newly-formed Reston Homeowners Association and Fairfax County government. To help ensure Reston citizens had a voice, Dick Hays, Joe Stowers and 15 others organized Reston Community Association (RCA), later changed to Reston Citizens Association.

Hays, Dennis sident RCA Pre

For the past five decades, RCA has been involved in key community-wide efforts that have led to Reston’s growth and crystallization of the community’s tagline—a great place to live, work and play. In the past, the group has monitored and participated in zoning cases before the county government, initiated the original development of commuter bus service from Reston to D.C., solicited renter involvement in community-wide activities and was behind the inception of the annual Reston Festival—now a Reston Town Center event. “Reston today is as vibrant as ever, but we face challenges unlike those our predecessors faced before,” said Dennis Hays, president, RCA. “Finding the right path forward will allow our children and grandchildren to thrive in a community that believes in the live, work, play—and get involved—philosophy we cherish.” Today, the group has its eyes on Fairfax County’s rushed and controversial Planned Residential Community (PRC) zoning amendment, possible redevelopment of Reston National Golf Course and proposals for the new Reston Library. To get involved with RCA and learn about the latest issues impacting Reston’s livability, visit www.RCAreston.com.

Reston’s future is NOW, so be a part of it. 30

Ken’sGolden Anniversary It was fifty years ago that I moved to Fairfax County as an intern teacher from the University of Virginia. I had a Bachelor of Arts degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, but I found that the job market was not strong for historians or political scientists. The master’s program at UVA offered the course work necessary for teaching as well as an intern year of teaching at half pay. Having grown up in the Shenandoah Valley, my move to Northern Virginia gave me strong credentials as a Virginia native who had lived in every major region of the Old Dominion. Only years later would I come to recognize how fortunate I was to have made the move into education and to Northern Virginia. To supplement my half-time pay as an intern teacher I taught in the evening adult high school. That experience led to my becoming administrator for all adult education programs in Fairfax County Public Schools. The other good fortune is that my move to Northern Virginia led to my eventually settling in the new town of Reston, and I have loved it ever since. Only later when I decided to run for office did I realize how fortunate I was to represent the wonderful people of Reston. I was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1977 after two unsuccessful attempts. I served for one term, lost the next election, then was re-elected in 1981 and have been in office ever since. I am currently the longest serving member of the House of Delegates. For many years I had two jobs. I worked for Fairfax County all day and did my legislative work that is considered a part-time job in the evenings and on weekends. I took leave without pay when I had to go to Richmond, and the modest pay as a legislator came close to making up for the unpaid days. Life was not all work of course. I loved teaching but became an administrator after a couple of years for a better salary to support my family. I still teach but now in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at George Mason University. A great honor in my life was when soon after I retired from Fairfax County Public Schools in 1996 a school building was named

in my honor—The Plum Center for Lifelong Learning is on Edsall Road near Annandale. Serving in the legislature is a great honor as well. Some struggles are long—I introduced the first bill in the state and one of the first in the country in 1982 to establish an independent redistricting commission, and I hope to realize success on that measure before I’m finished my legislative career. As a progressive Democrat, I have worked hard for Medicaid expansion in Virginia to extend health care coverage to 400,000 uninsured persons and to pass common-sense gun safety laws. Back in 1989 when I realized the need for focused attention on extending Metrorail through Tysons Corner, Reston, Dulles Airport and into Loudoun County, I organized the Dulles Corridor Rail Association as an advocacy group. I was chairman of the group until this year when we merged with the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance as our mission had essentially been accomplished. My wife Jane and I love the trails and walk on them most every day in the early mornings. We both enjoy our flowers and enjoy sharing their beauty with others on social media as we do with our travels. Our four children live in the region along with our six grandchildren. We enjoy keeping up with friends and supporters on Facebook. I am a blessed person to live in a community like Reston, to work with so many outstanding people, and to represent all our citizens as an elected Delegate County Public. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum

TONI REINHART

DR. DAWN DEVANEY GAMMON

Toni Reinhart was born in Hagerstown, Maryland and grew up in Falls Church. She and her husband, Bill moved to Reston in 1981. They chose Reston because of all the green space, the lakes and trails and the balance of urban and suburban.

Dr. Dawn Devaney Gammon, originally from Staten Island, graduated from S.U.N.Y Albany and received her Doctorate of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She completed her residency at the V.A. Hospital in Tucson, AZ. She moved to the DC area in 1999. Dr. Dawn started wearing glasses for near sightedness in the 3rd grade. Feeling self-conscious, she switched to contacts as a teenager – it was life changing. She felt so much more confident and wanted to help others feel the same way. Fast forward – Dr. Dawn is now a successful optometrist and owns The Eyewear Gallery at Reston Town Center.

For much of her career, Toni was an IT Training Manager. In spring 2001, with a recession looming, she knew that computer training would be one of the first cost areas her company would reduce. She evaluated her career goals and came up with a list of priorities. Her list included—to own her own franchise business, to be engaged with her community, to work in a field that allowed her to improve the quality of people’s lives, and to provide a service. Having been a successful manager for many years, she felt that if she could meet her list criteria that it didn’t matter the field she chose as long as she was passionate about her choice. After reviewing franchise options, she decided that Comfort Keepers, an elder care service business that offers customized home care, would be a perfect fit. Toni states, “Elder Care is an incredibly rewarding line of work. To make it possible for people to live out their lives in their own homes is an honor.” As with any business, there are challenges. Finding the most qualified and caring staff, educating the public about the elder care industry, and the health care system can all be complicated. “It takes a 24/7 commitment to run a Home Care Agency. There is many a night or holiday that Toni has left her family to assist someone in need. Toni credits her management skills, compassionate heart, good business plan and surrounding herself with good people as helping her lead Comfort Keepers to become the agency it is today. Toni serves on various committees including helping shelter dogs, advocating for seniors and working with the local chambers. She enjoys an active lifestyle. You will often see her at RTC events dancing swing, lindy or jitterbug! She cycles, gardens, and skis. www.seniorcarenova.com

Though she had never managed her own business before, Dr. Gammon purchased the practice in 2007 after having worked as an employee there for two years. She literally made her ‘vision a reality’. With a passion for fashion and travel, in addition to providing professional eye care services, she expanded the business to include the most fashion-forward frames from around the world. At the time she bought the business, Dawn had two toddlers at home – she quickly learned to balance motherhood with the responsibilities and hours of owning a business. A friend gave her a bracelet engraved with the French word, “Intrepide’ which means “fearless.” That’s the way she strives to live her life every day. Dr. Dawn is proud of what she has accomplished and is excited to serve the Reston community in her professional, stylish way! She was named 2016 and 2017 “Top Eye Care Provider” by Virginia Living Magazine. When not working, taking care of two teenagers or caring for her aging parent, Dr. Dawn is an avid west coast swing dancer and traveler. “Whether you choose to be the doctor in the exam room, the optician who designs, fits and dispenses the glasses, or supporting staff, the eye care field offers many career options for women both for professional and personal fulfillment. Whichever avenue you choose, surround yourself with positive people. I am so fortunate to have a talented, creative, and caring team in my practice. I couldn’t do it without them.” www.eyewear-gallery.com

BOOK REPORT 34

ABOUT THE AUTHOR, PAT WILLIAMS Pat Williams, MAT, CSA, is a senior expert and founder of GraceFul Care, a Reston based elder care agency. She founded the Lifetime Leadership Program at Leadership Fairfax, started two Memory Café’s and senior Villages, and chaired Fairfax’s Long Term Care Coordinating Council. Some of her honors include the Community Trustee Award from Leadership Fairfax and the Heroine of Washington Lifetime Achievement Award from the March of Dimes. Pat is a sought after speaker for her interactive presentations on topics she writes about in her book—brain exercises, power networking, social entrepreneurship, and more. In addition, Pat helps people find ideal solutions for their aging loved ones and counsels families affected by Alzheimer’s.

Pat sat on a Board of Directors with a mind full of ideas but never expressed them. Her approach for challenging situations was to avoid them, or shy away and say nothing. She began to research and study leaders who demonstrated appropriate and sensitive ways to communicate. Her book, Say The Right Thing, a guide written to help others who may have experienced similar insecurities, is a result of that research. Pat William’s book is filled with gems from CEO’s, pastors, caregivers, coaches, community leaders, and even her mother, Grace. Say The Right Thing teaches us how communication makes a difference whether we are growing our businesses, serving on boards, confronting a bully, calling on a friend in grief or who is terminally ill, dealing with introversion, or other. The book includes 40 chapters of

solution options for these often uncomfortable situations. In addition to business leadership, readers learn useful approaches for communicating with seniors, teaching children about the cycle of life, reconnecting broken family relationships, and more. Her eBook is online at Amazon, and her print book is available at her speaking engagements and directly from Pat@GraceFulCare.com.

consider a will with a testamentary trust, or creating a revocable trust that can spell out your wishes and instructions. This can also provide protections for the child and the assets to ensure they are used for what you intend (think paying for college verses buying a Maserati). Sit down with an experienced estate planner today to discuss your options, and make sure your loved ones are prepared and protected. By Jesci Norrington

Uncomfortable Massage Questions To get the most out of your massage experience, it is important that you are able to communicate freely with your therapist about what you want and expect from your massage session. Following are some common questions you may want to ask your massage therapist, but are uncomfortable doing so. Q: DO I HAVE TO GET NAKED? While many people prefer to get fully undressed, others prefer to keep their underwear on. I suggest that men wear a brief, boxer-brief or running shorts with a built in liner as opposed to loose boxers or long swim trunks. For women who want support, I suggest a sports bra since the oils in massage lotion are unkind to the materials of your regular bra. Whether you prefer to be fully or partially undressed, you will always be covered with a sheet and only the body part that is being worked on at the time will be undraped with the utmost care and respect for your privacy. Q: AM I SUPPOSED TO TIP? In a spa or salon tipping is customary. Because my office is in a clinical setting, I don’t anticipate, but will happily accept, gratuity. If you are paying for your massage with a credit/debit card that is attached to your Health Savings Account, do NOT add gratuity. Gratuity is not a medical expense.

Q: WHAT IF I DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO SHAVE/SHOWER? While you will certainly feel more comfortable if you arrive for your massage fresh out of the shower, it is not always possible. Working with athletes and knowing that many people come straight from work, I generally have some wipes in the massage room that you are welcome to use to freshen up. Hairy legs/back/shoulders do not impede my ability to give you a massage. Q: WHAT IF I SNORE, DROOL OR PASS GAS? These are all normal bodily functions, and not a reason for embarrassment. Trust me, you won’t be the first or the last, and I certainly will not be offended. Having been in practice for nearly two decades, there aren’t many questions that I haven’t been asked. I hope that you will feel comfortable knowing that whatever questions you might have about your massage session, they will be answered honestly and with respect.

SAME DAY CROWNS In the past several years, new dental advances have changed the way that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentist alike. Chief among these new technologies is 3D milling. Over the past several years, Cerec 3D milling has quickly become the preferred method that dentists use to actually make crowns in one visit. No more sending them off to the lab and delivering your crown at the next visit. The result is that patients can be diagnosed and treated with their new crown on the same day. Not every dentist has this technology; in fact, less than 15% have the ability to mill crowns in their office while you wait. Make sure your dentist is using the most modern technologies to improve your dental experience.

The END of Alzheimer’s STARTS with You! CONTRIBUTOR: Cindy Schelhorn

Over 1,400 people and 175 teams are expected to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions at the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® in Northern Virginia on Sunday afternoon, September 24 at Reston Town Center. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds helping to fight this disease and support those who face its daily challenges. Originating in 1989 with just 9 chapters and raising $149,000, the Walk is now held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. In 2016, nearly 500,000 participants across the country raised more than $786 million through this special event supporting the Alzheimer’s Association, the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. More than 1,200 people participated in the Walk in Reston last year, raising $195,000 that helped to provide free programs and support in the local community, a 24/7 Helpline, and online resources at alz.org, as well as critical research funding. According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2017 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s every 66 44

seconds. Two thirds are women. More than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death and the only top 10 cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed. Last year, almost 16 million family and friends provided over 18 billion hours of unpaid assistance to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, a contribution to the nation valued at just over $230 billion. Participation in the Walk is free. Walkers are encouraged to fundraise. During the event, participants can learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, the Association’s programs and services, advocacy and volunteer opportunities, and clinical trial enrollment. Before the Walk begins, all attendees join in a meaningful tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s. This walk is personal. Whether you’re walking for your family or friends, a caregiver or a person living with Alzheimer’s, or to stop rising health care costs and fight the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death, we all have a reason to Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Start a team. Join a team. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s. Visit alz.org/walk to register. AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

Meet the Chef at Tall Oaks Assisted Living Center

while working at the Park Hyatt Washington DC. He received ‘Top Instructor’ from the National Restaurant Association for the Food Safety Class he teaches. As a member of the ANFP, Chef Robert was awarded the Dietary Manager of the Year for excellence in the healthcare field.

Chef Robert McKeon One of Chef Robert’s early fondest memories was being four years old and spending time in his grandmother’s kitchen licking mixing beaters dripping with delicious batter from desserts she would make. Fast forward years later, and Chef Robert McKeon is now a culinary leader in the DC Metro Region and the Dining Service Director at Tall Oaks Assisted Living in Reston. He is also founder of FoodSafetyChef.com Chef Robert started cooking professionally as a teenager and has been sharing his appreciation of food and giving back to others ever since. He learned early the value of a strong work ethic from his grandmother, Gretel Von Lisk. Since graduating from the Culinary Institute of America Hyde Park, Chef Robert has successfully pursued his career in many top culinary cities choosing to settle in the Washington DC area in 1991. Chef Robert received the prestigious James Beard Award

46

Chef Robert came to Tall Oaks Assisted Living in 2008. He refers to his current position at Tall Oaks as ‘a calling.’ “Nutrition for the elderly is of critical importance, not only in terms of food safety, but for comfort and enjoyment, says Chef Robert. I enjoy taking simple and healthy food and preparing it in a way that is nourishing and satisfying.” Tall Oaks residents look forward to delicious meals in Chef Robert’s dining room. Special requests are always welcomed, and Chef Robert happily rises to the challenge of recreating an old family recipe. Resident Betty Fertel shares, “Robert cooks all my meals; I feel he is my private Chef. I never ate so well in my life.” Mary Lee, daughter of resident Joe Tangredi and a regular visitor to Tall Oaks comments, “Robert makes us all feel so special, he is our second family.” Chef Robert is passionate about cooking and food. He enjoys sharing his passion with the residents at Tall Oaks and our community, hosting many food events at the Reston Community Center that are open to all. “Food has so many meanings to me. Food is nourishment, yes, but it is also social, community, connection and medicine, says Chef Robert. “To be a true chef, you must love people, be passionate and giving.” Regardless of whether Chef Robert has spent his day in the kitchen or the classroom, he shares, “My day never feels like work because I love what I do. Enriching the lives of others through food is a privilege.”

ENCORE CHORALE OF RESTON CONTRIBUTOR: Lee Lipsey

It’s Tuesday afternoon. Singers arrive for their weekly rehearsal. Alto Pat Williams drops her black choral folder on a chair and chats with a friend. Pat’s husband Dave takes a seat in the bass section and reviews Va Pensiero. Today we sing in Italian! Next week, we’ll rehearse a medley from Les Miserables. Director David Lang begins the vocal exercises: “Don’t be afraid to sound awful when you warm up your voice.” David demonstrates sounding awful for our amusement. We recite Italian lyrics. He urges us to “exaggerate your Italian accent—fake it ‘til you make it.” Welcome to Encore Chorale of Reston, for singers age 55 and older. The program offers two 15-week semesters yearly. Some Encore singers have years of vocal music experience; others are “shower singers.” Some read music fluently; others have never seen a choral music score. The music is in four voice parts. Auditions are not required. Pat Williams says, “I don’t read music well, so in my car I play the Encore Chorale CD with my alto part plus all parts together. I practice, practice, practice!”

48

in the National Capital Area. Singers from communities nearby are welcome to join Encore Chorale of Reston. Encore Creativity also sponsors Encore ROCKS Greater Fairfax, directed by David Lang. They rehearse Fridays 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Oakton, VA. ROCKS singer Dan Tearno says, “The tunes we sing are ‘the soundtrack of my life and that makes it enjoyable to rehearse them.” All Encore Chorales sing together at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts each December. Soprano Kathy Brooks marvels: “Me? Onstage? At the Kennedy Center? What a thrill to sing at one of the most respected venues in the world.” The thrill of performance and the shared effort keep these singers practicing, joyfully!

Singers share their passion for music. Soprano Karen Thomann had set music aside during her career. Joining Encore Chorale in 2015, she found “a reawakening of my lifelong love of music!”

Fall 2017 rehearsals start Tuesday, September 5, at United Christian Parish Reston, 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Reston is lucky to have one of 15 chorales sponsored by Encore Creativity for Older Adults

WORDS MATTER When it comes to services for older adults, Reston is a leader Aging, Geriatric, Retirement, Senior Citizen. These are all words that are used to describe a variety of products and services for individuals over a certain age (usually 50, 55 or 62). However, if you ask a handful of folks who are over that certain age if they would go to a senior center, move to a retirement community, or enroll in a geriatric program, you will more than likely hear “That’s not for me,” or “I’m not ready for that yet.” The programs and activities are not the problem; the words are. The way that programs geared toward older adults are described frequently makes them less appealing to the very audience they were designed to serve. In Reston, many programs and services for older adults are included under the umbrella of the Reston Community Center (RCC). Because there is not a sign in front of the building that says “Senior Center,” the services offered are more appealing to older adults, whether they are a part of the 55+ programming or not. A shining example of how our words matter is a popular educational program in Reston—Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Residents are more likely to attend a class at a Lifelong Learning Institute than at an “Elderhostel.” In fact,

Elderhostel changed its name to Road Scholar in 2010, and they have seen an exponential increase in enrollment. Beyond these programs, Reston has seen many recent developments that are making our community more walkable—and more livable—for all generations. Many of the condos and apartments in Reston offer services and amenities that rival those found at retirement communities while offering the additional attraction of no signage designating them as senior housing communities. In 2014, Reston was recognized by Met Life Foundation and Generations United as one of the Best Intergenerational Communities in the nation. The Reston community is committed to meeting the needs of young and old residents together ensuring all residents have a place and a voice. Part of that commitment is choosing words carefully. We all make assumptions about people based on perceived age. It is important to choose words wisely when talking to and about older adults. Likewise, it is important for older adults to be open-minded when it comes to programs and services. Do not shun an otherwise great program because it is marketed to “seniors,”— whoever they are.

Community Helpers

Young children are taught about friendly helpers in our community who provide assistance and safety for them and others in their neighborhood. Atop the list are always the public safety officers—the police men and women, the fire fighters and the ambulance drivers. The sanitation workers often get mentioned because the children see them come and go with their loud, large trucks. But that is a short list of the many people who make our neighborhoods function. My office is in my home, and I am aware of the many persons who come and go in my neighborhood. I suspect that where I live is not unlike other neighborhoods in Reston. Early afternoon is when the postal carrier comes by my house, but before that arrival there will have been several other delivery persons from UPS, Federal Express and private carriers using their own vehicles to deliver on our streets daily. Some homes get deliveries several times per week. Internet buying has resulted in a proliferation of carriers some of whom bring our groceries or our prepared meals. School buses pass through most neighborhoods, but it is more than the big yellow public school buses. Buses for day care services and after-school activities come by as well. Throughout the day on most streets where everyone in a household is employed outside the home there are pet walkers coming to walk the dogs. Their vehicles are not typically marked, but it is evident that the essential service they provide is in demand. Lawn care services swoop into the neighborhoods in their trucks filled with mowers, weed whackers, and other machines to maintain yards. Another service that truck side panels promise perfect lawns comes by regularly to dispense some environmentally safe chemicals that will beautify the lawns. To keep our homes working perfectly there is a parade of mostly white panel trucks with ladders on the top that are driven by persons who make needed repairs, fix the plumbing or the heating or air conditioning, paint, destroy pests, or install our electronics. We live in a beautiful community, but it takes a lot of people to keep it that way. Take some time to observe the number of people who help us to maintain our lifestyle. We need to respect and thank our community helpers! Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

AROUND RESTON— 2017

Summer Real Estate Market Summary Did you know that October is one of the best months to sell your home? Many people prefer to buy in the Fall when vacations are over things have calmed down. The weather is better for moving and people are planning for 2018. Many buyers have the goal of being in their new home for the Holidays or before the New Year. Hard to believe that’s right around the corner! For now, it’s still a Seller’s Market in Reston.

AVERAGE SALES PRICE: Good news for Reston homeowners! The average sales price jumped 7.4% since last quarter. Of course, values do go up and down during the year. Overall we’ve seen a steady increase since 2009. The low that year was $351,353. We finished the second quarter at $467,508, a 25% increase since then. The second and third quarters are normally the best so we can expect this trend to continue into the Fall.

CLOSED SALES: In the last issue we looked at the increasing number of closed sales in Reston. This time we see more of the same. In fact, 412 homes were sold in Reston in the second quarter alone. That may not seem like a lot of homes but that’s the highest it’s been since 2005! The Spring market is typically the most active so that will likely be the high water mark for the year.

MEDIAN DAYS ON MARKET: Typically, homes in Reston are still getting contracts within two weeks. Buyers have been quick to make offers when the right home hits the market. This chart shows the changes per quarter separately for detached homes, townhomes and condos, with the top yellow line representing condos. Condo owners will be happy to hear that the median days on market for condos dropped significantly since last quarter. It’s refreshing to see the trend lines converge below the five year average of 25 days on market. Reston is comprised of many unique neighborhoods and home styles. If you would like to know how your neighborhood compares to Reston overall, then simply contact a local Realtor. We can provide these statistics for your neighborhood and home specifically. 54

Tim’s Tips 5 Tips to Get the Best Deal on your Next House

TIM FINEFROCK

1. HIRE AN EXPERT. Find a Realtor early in the process. Look for strong knowledge of the market and good negotiating skills. They can also help find hidden inventory. 2. STAND YOUR GROUND. Know your finances. Figure out your total monthly cost for the house. Know your limit and stay in your comfort zone. 3. MAKE A REALISTIC OFFER. Know the market and comparable sales. Homes in Fairfax typically sell for 98% of their asking price. You can get a good deal without making a low-ball offer. 4. CONSIDER A DEADLINE. For example, this offer expires in 24 hours. This can help seal the deal and avoid competing offers. 5. PRICE ISN’T THE ONLY THING. If the seller is stuck on a certain price, ask for other things like closing costs or repair items that can really affect your bottom line.

Golf Course Living on Fairway Cluster Ever wonder what it’s like living on a golf course? If you lived in Fairway Cluster, you would have just that! Fairway Cluster townhomes, clustered in groups of 4 to 6 units, are arranged in a U-type configuration surrounded on three sides by fairways of Hidden Creek Country Club, Reston’s original golf course.

more young families are moving in. Resident, Peter Kardel says “The location is ideal. We are in convenient walking distance of Reston Town Center, Lake Anne Plaza, and Plaza America. We love our nice green view, and the golfers are very respectful. There is the occasional golf ball in the backyard—fun for the kids!”

Developed in 1972, Fairway Cluster is located on N. Shore Drive. It is a small modular development consisting of 22 townhomes. With so few homes, the owners self-manage their own Home Owners Association. This is a friendly community where neighbors watch out for each other and enjoy regular gatherings—a community picnic, bonfires, and progressive dinners to name a few.

Most residents are drawn to the neighborhood by the peaceful and beautiful scenery of the golf course. Resident Kim Lockhart says “It’s like living in a park that is mowed, manicured, and in perfect condition.” This past May, Lockhart started a watermelon garden enlisting the help of the cluster kids who all enjoy participating on the Watermelon Committee!”

Original Restonians may remember these unique homes coming in on trucks, placed on site and built! The homes have a boxed, modern style architecture. Each home is 3 layers with the front entry on the 2 nd level and a walk out lower level. Homes average 2,000 square feet with 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 bathrooms. Most recent sale was for $450,000.

Joan Fletcher has lived in Fairway Cluster for about 8 years. She is the current president of the Board of Directors. She loves the close community within the small cluster and watching the interesting wildlife from her deck.

A few of the original homeowners still live in Fairway Cluster. As townhomes turn over,

Not many Fairway Cluster properties come on the market each year. But if you happen to get lucky and buy in this neighborhood, sounds like you will have some nice new neighbors and enjoy a wonderful back yard you don’t have to mow!

In The Know explores the “hidden gems” of Reston—people, places and things known only to a few people —and shares their stories with Around Reston readers so that others can also be “in the know.” Now you Know!

IN THE KNOW! HUNTERS WOOD PUBLIC ART

Some Reston “hidden gems” are actually out in the open for all to see … if you know where to look! After 14 years of living in Reston and spending a lot of time exploring our community, I was pleasantly surprised to recently discover a colorful masterpiece at the entrance to the Glade Drive underpass. Made of colorful mosaic tiles, mirror pieces and stained glass, and arranged in a whimsical design, the “Emerge” mural was created in 2010 by local artist, Valerie Theberge, who was commissioned by Reston Public Art in collaboration with Reston Association and Reston Community Center. It is one of many pieces of public art in Reston; however, what I like best is the inclusion of students in the creative process. Each school year, sixth grade students from the Hunters Woods Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences (HWES) are provided an amazing opportunity to collaborate with an artistin-residence to create a signature art project. The recent Class of 2017 made a mural of mosaic bubbles containing images reflective of common school themes like reading, math, music and their beloved mustang mascot. The students spent one week with the artist to create their masterpiece. They applied techniques learned from their art teachers, Mrs. Norma Morris and Ms. Elise Napolitano, and gained sincere appreciation for creating something so special. Over the years, HWES has amassed a large collection of unique art located both inside and outside of the school building. As kids go “back to school” next month, I invite you to visit and explore the art at the front entrance, including the 165 square foot mural depicting HWES values, as well as the side of the building towards Kiss and Ride; look for a painting of Reston founder Robert E. Simon surrounded by children. When you are done, remember to extend your local public art tour by walking towards Glade Drive and taking the path down the hill. You’ll be amazed by the colorful art “hiding” at the Underpass! Ashleigh Dorfman is a Reston mom of three daughters and enjoys exploring our community.

Walker Nature Center

Katie Shaw

When is the last time you had a forest bath? Katie Shaw, Reston’s Nature Center Manager and employee of 25 years says, “It’s important to balance the stresses of modern life with the joys of nature. Here, at the Walker Nature Center, you can do just that.” A nature center was part of Bob Simon’s original Master Plan for Reston. In 1967, Vern Walker, for whom the center is named, launched the nature education program. People called him the “pied piper” as he led nature walks throughout Reston’s green spaces, operating a “nature center without walls”. Some Restonians may remember the small, seasonal building that was located on the 72-acre property. It was built in 1986 to accommodate the growing nature programs. In 2001, Friends of Reston launched a capital campaign to build a year-round education building that raised more than $1.5M. In 2009, the new building, named Nature House, was opened and gifted to Reston Association. Nature House is a model of sustainable design and green construction. Nature House received LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and may be rented by community groups and individuals. The building, designed by Travis Ritenour, Architect and LEED AP, is located at 11450 Glade Drive and surrounded by walking paths, picnic tables and benches. Visitors come to enjoy peaceful walks on the natural surface trails and adjacent paved paths or sit by the pond listening to the birds and croaking frogs. People gather in the multipurpose room for classes, nature camps, environmental films and receptions. Nature education programs, including bird walks, campfire evenings and photo scavenger hunts are held regularly. The Nature House 5K, hosted by Friends of Reston each April, is an annual event for many families. Funds raised from the run benefit Walker Nature Center.

I grew up in Reston, very close to the Nature Center so it was a big part of my life. To this day, I often walk my dog there in the mornings. My children also grew up here enjoying activities at Walker Nature Center including the very popular Halloween walk where glowing mushrooms and happy ghosts are ready to surprise families following the Jack-o-lantern lit trail. Through the use of direct experiences and interpretive media, the mission of the center is to foster good environmental stewardship in the community. Be sure to visit Walker Nature center soon. www.reston.org

RIDE-ALONG WITH FIRST RESPONDER CONTRIBUTOR: Susan Banville

I recently had the pleasure of taking a ‘Ride-Along’ with Reston police officer Jimmy Jones. As a member of the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce First Responders Committee, I was offered the opportunity to learn firsthand what duties and responsibilities our policemen and women perform each day, experiences they have while working to make our community safer and to learn more about behind the scenes tasks officers perform. Officer Jimmy was an incredibly friendly and caring person, not the stereotype we often assume. No reflective glasses, no stern unemotional personality—just a nice guy interested in ensuring Reston was a great place to live, work and play. As we traveled around the Reston area, it quickly became apparent how deeply Jimmy is involved with all aspects of the community especially with those who are struggling. He knows every homeless person, their family difficulties and has personally supported many of them in obtaining support from local substance abuse programs and social service opportunities. Not surprisingly, Jimmy was awarded First Responder of the Quarter the end of 2016 for his outstanding service. Our first stop was at a make shift community where many of those struggling with drug and alcohol addiction “live”. As we approached, Jimmy spoke very kindly to those there, assessed the situation and determined that one gentleman was so intoxicated that he needed to call for backup which included additional police, a rescue squad, fire truck and transport to the Reston Hospital. Another stop was pulling over a car with expired tags. I appreciated Jimmy’s kindness towards the driver. Instead of ticketing her, he provided information on how she could rectify the situation and the timeframe in which it needed to be done. One call was to a local elementary school because a 2nd grader brought in a “roach” (the butt of a joint) for Show and Tell. The parent was called into the principal’s office and agreed to let me observe. This parent had been dealing with substantial issues at home and had no knowledge her child brought in this item. No charges were filed—counseling was offered. I watched a First Aid Training session in which all officers worked together as a team to shut off a main artery. If a similar real situation occurred and officers were not trained together, possible deaths could result. As a long time Reston resident, this Ride-Along was very impactful. It allowed me to better understand what many First Responders deal with on a daily basis. I saw how well the officers are trained and their amazing commitment to our community. 70

‘Raised Reston!’ Stevens Family Margaret and Harry Stevens moved from Alexandria to Reston in 1972, purchasing a home from Gulf Reston on Hunters Green Court. Shortly after the move, their daughter, Samantha, was born. In 1975, the family moved to a home on Soapstone Drive where Margaret and Harry still live today! Reston was a great place to raise their daughter and was also fun for the adults. The Stevens’ took advantage of all that the community had to offer. They remember when Reston Country Club, now Hidden Creek Country Club, was a ‘bottle club,’ (a place where members are served drinks from their own bottles). They remember movies at the International Center and horseback riding where the Reston Animal Hospital is now located. Margaret’s father would visit from Falls Church and take Samantha on long walks on the paths, often returning with handfuls of blackberries that they would put into pancakes or scones. In their retirement years, the Stevens’ have opted to remain in Reston because they still enjoy all of Reston’s amenities. Of course, it has been easy to stay local with their daughter and grand-daughter nearby! Daughter, Samantha has fond memories of growing up in Reston. She enjoyed a childhood filled with family activities and the freedom to move around the community. Living near the golf course, she would set up a lemonade stand to provide refreshment to the golfers in the summer and in the winter, she would sled on the golf course hills. She and her friends would bike or walk everywhere! They enjoyed spending time at several pools, but they mostly enjoyed the fun of riding their bikes all around Reston. Samantha took both ballet classes and photography classes at Reston Community Center. She knew early she wanted to pursue photography. Today, Samantha is a professional photographer with her own business, Sweet Memories Photography. Samantha attended Tara Reston Christian School (where Edlin School is now located) and remembers fondly her favorite teachers, Mrs. Suder and Mrs. Ada Evans. After having her daughter, Victoria, Samantha and Victoria moved to a condo in Hunters Woods. They remained there, close to her parents, until they moved to Loudoun County when Victoria was 5. Although some of Victoria’s childhood was spent out of Reston, she spent much of her summers at her grandparent’s home on Soapstone Drive. She attended school at The Academy of Christian Education in Reston. She loved going to North Shore Pool with her friends. She reminisces about time spent at South Lakes Shopping Center hanging by the lake and visiting the book store in Lake Anne. Victoria took classes at the Reston NOVA campus before moving on to George Mason. She has moved back to Reston and lives close to her grandparents. She again is enjoying going to South Lakes Shopping Center for coffee and lunch! The story of Margaret Stevens, Samantha Stevens Marshall and Victoria Stevens is one of three generations of women who have lived their lives in and around Reston—just as Bob Simon had intended! Lake Anne Nursery Kindergarten Serving multi-generational families for over 50 years! By Joan Wain

The idea for Lake Anne Nursery Kindergarten, or LANK as it is more familiarly known was born of the genius of Robert Simon. Simon’s vision for Reston included an integration of buildings, recreation, leisure, commerce and learning. His vision for learning included creating the area’s first preschool which is now 52 years old. It is rare to find a preschool that boasts a 52-year-old history, but one very interesting outcome of that rich history is a student population that is multi-generational. Children whose parents and even grandparents have a strong attachment to LANK have created a close knit and vibrant community. The school’s former director Marilyn O’Neill is a great example of one such family. Marilyn has two grown, married sons that attended LANK as two year olds in the late 1970’s. Marilyn began subbing in the school in the early 1980’s and eventually taught almost every age group until becoming the school’s director in 2005. When Marilyn’s son Michael had his own children, LANK was the natural and only choice for preschool. For Marilyn, watching her grandchildren attend the same school as her sons and play in the same space that she taught in for over 20 years, brought a sense of continuity, comfort and joy. Many other teachers have experienced those same feelings when their own children and grandchildren attended LANK. Another family that shares in that same emotional investment, is the Carlson family. Erika Carlson couldn’t wait for her three girls to attend the same beloved school that she attended as a three-year-old. Her youngest daughter Hannah is currently attending LANK’s five-day pre-K program and will follow in her older sisters’ footsteps by attending kindergarten there next fall. For Erika, there is no better feeling than knowing her daughter is being nurtured in the same space that she loved as a little girl. In fact, Erika can point out her own childhood cubby space and can even remember being taught by Mrs. O’Neill.

Many other families can also claim this unique family legacy and attachment to LANK. It seems Bob Simon’s vision was spot on; his dream to instill a sense of community has endured and is thriving at Lake Anne Nursery Kindergarten. AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

SOUTH LAKES GRAD

Making an IMPACT Mike Ellison For Mike Ellison, South Lakes High School Class of 1989 president, growing up in Reston was the launch point for a career that has allowed him to implement his family’s mantra: “Nobody can help everybody, but everybody can help somebody.” After graduating South Lakes and then the University of Virginia, Mike worked in public relations for the U.S. Tennis Association during the Arthur Ashe AIDS Tennis Challenge. “Learning more about the late legend’s life and contributions was truly inspiring,” Mike says.

That experience, and others, resulted in Mike moving to Detroit, where he lives with his wife and two small children, and embarking on a major career shift. Detroit’s music scene “inspired me to do a 180 and pursue the arts—music, acting, voice over work and community outreach.” Mike admits he was “incredibly gun shy” at first about his newfound talents, but he plunged his energy into songs about hope and helping others. He created a song called “Ethiopia (Everything Will Be Alright),” found creative partners, and took his message to Ethiopia, his birthplace. He recalls “being greeted by children emerging from the Nile River near Bahar Dar, Ethiopia singing my song. Thinking about it still gives me chills. To have a song and video embraced by the whole country and the diaspora was more than I could have ever dreamed or imagined.” The song’s popularity allowed Mike to partner with several organizations and work with them to improve healthcare, support orphan outreach efforts, and aide in fundraising for several clinics. But his outreach efforts did not stop in Ethiopia. Mike has performed at the Festival of Pan-African Dance in Rwanda, after which he toured the country and visited the Genocide Memorial, an experience he calls “painful, beautiful and inspirational.” For the American Cancer Society, he has spread the word about tobacco abuse among youth worldwide. He has created AfroFlow, African-inspired hip-hop that teaches teens about their musical roots, and he has developed “BROKEN MIRRORS: Bullies & Bystanders,” which employs interactive multimedia entertainment to address bullying. Did Reston have anything to do with Mike’s social commitment? “We all owe whatever level of success we’ve experienced to that village of unselfish souls,” he says. Scholarships

—Not the only option By Leana Travis

As high school students, we are often just trying to get through the week. So when we are asked about our plans after high school graduation, for most of us, a sort of panic starts to set in. Many students plan on going to college, and although it is certainly not for everyone, if it is your path, there are resources available to assist with the obstacles you may find along the way. One of the most challenging aspects of going to college is finances. While you may have the motivation and the grades, maybe you’re ruling out college because of expensive tuition and expenses associated with it. There are solutions. The most common form of financial aid is a scholarship; however, many don’t qualify, so it is important to determine other options. Another type of financial support is a grant. Grants are more focused on financial need. There are both federal and state grants. They are much easier to come by and are offered to many more students. Some federal grants available include the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), the Academic Competitive Grant (ACG), the SMART Grant, and the Teach Grant Program. While they all serve the purpose of defraying college tuition, some are more appropriate than others for some students. For example, the ACG is for freshmen and sophomores, and the SMART Grant is for sophomores and juniors. The Teach Grant is specifically for those who want to become teachers. Aside from federal grants that apply to all U.S. citizens, there are programs specific to residents of Virginia. To name a few, there are the Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program, Virginia Commonwealth Award Program, the Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant, and the Virginia Higher Education Teacher Assistance Program. As high school comes to an end, it is important to savor the remaining moments of this chapter in our lives, but it is equally as important to have at least a basic plan for the future. The most important takeaway is that you can accomplish anything if you put in the hard work and explore all the options. At South Lakes High School, we are surrounded by supportive adults anxious to help. Do not be afraid to inquire and take charge of your future, even if it feels scary and feels a long way off.
