This weekly fitness class is just one of the free activities offered at the RTC Pavilion. On many Sunday mornings, join workout classes sponsored by Athleta at 11am. Potomac River Running regularly hosts road races/walks from RTC including the July 4 Firecracker 5K, one of my favorites! NEW METHODS AND CLIMATE CHANGE EXTEND RESTON FARMERS MARKET SEASON CONTRIBUTOR: John Lovaas

The Reston Farmers Market (RFM) opened for its 20th season on Saturday, April 29th.

That’s right, APRIL 29! Furthermore, the Reston Farmers Market will not end its 2017 season until December 9th. That is, the Reston Farmers Market season will be 5 weeks longer this year.

We first opened the RFM in 1998 in response to a request from neighbors of Tall Oaks Village Center calling themselves “The Friends of TOMATO”. TOMATO was the acronym for The Organic Market at Tall Oaks. However, Giant Food, the “anchor” in Tall Oaks at the time, refused the request to have a local farmers market there. The Condo Association at Lake Anne had no such issue and gladly agreed to the Fairfax County sponsored Farmers Market. With that, the Friends asked for a little help from Reston Association, i.e., some signage and a volunteer to manage the market. I was RA Vice President at the time, and volunteered to manage the Market. We began in 1998, opening on May 16 with a ceremony led by Founder Robert Simon and Delegate Ken Plum. We closed Oct. 31 our first year.

What has happened since 1998 to allow us to extend the season by fully two months 1998 to 2017? There are three main reasons: 1) improved farm technologies and practices; 2) warmer weather in our region, up to 125 miles from here; and, 3) more farmers/ vendors—we began with 12, will have 30 this season.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION Parking in RTC “Being a lifelong resident of Reston, paid RTC parking comes as something that does not represent Reston values and comes as a major shock. Reston has grown from a small to a very built up place but it does not mean we have to charge for parking at the location favorite spot.

When I was in high school, my peers and I would use RTC as a hangout and now I don’t see many people using it as a hangout spot. People have a bitter taste in their mouths and are choosing to take their business elsewhere. Having to download an app to park is a deterrent for people to come by for even a simple lunch and the app is not even determined to be secure. I do think with continued push back that there will have to be some sort of compromise.

Eating Out Around Reston Red’s Table Lakeside Dining Recently, my friend, Brooke Silverman and I dined at Red’s Table in South Lakes Shopping Center. Red’s Table, formerly Lakeside Inn, opened about 2 years ago after a complete renovation. Red’s Table is owned by 3 brothers who grew up in Reston—Matthew, Patrick and Ryan Tracy, all graduates of South Lakes High School. The re-designed modern restaurant has a welcoming, upscale feel enjoyable for couples, groups, and families. An inviting raised bar placed in the middle of the restaurant is a hub of energy. There are always 14 local craft beers on tap, along with an average 15 beers in bottles or cans including the old favorites. Behind the large bar sits the open kitchen where Chef Adam Stein manages his talented cooking staff.

Red’s Table is one of the popular options in Reston for lakeside dining. Much of both bar and table seating enjoys views of Lake Thoreau, a 40 acre man-made lake built in 1971. In summer, diners can sit on the open air patio overlooking the lake. During the colder months, there is a second outdoor patio which also offers lake views. Heated by space heaters, it is open most of the year.

At our table, we were welcomed by our friendly, knowledgeable server, Robin. Robin’s food and drink suggestions were helpful and true to our liking. We started with a couple of specialty cocktails and an appetizer, Cherry Glen Goat Cheese Fritters. The house made chili-apricot jam that accompanies the fritters was wonderful.

Red’s Table offers high quality food sourced from regional growers and producers whenever possible.

They have seasonal menus and daily specials based on availability. Seared Duck Breast, Maryland Lump Crabcakes, Cassoulet, Cioppino, Toscano Kale and Brussel Sprouts Salad are just a few of the menu selections. The ½ lb dry aged beef burger with fries is a popular choice for meat eaters. There is also a Raw Bar. We enjoyed a little bit of everything—all delicious. For our entrees, Brooke ordered the Pumpernickel Pappardelle, homemade pasta in a butternut cream sauce and spinach pesto, and I had the Cavatelli Pasta with Braised Brisket. Each entrée was under $20.00. We both cleaned our plates with smiles! Desserts and bread are made in-house. Though we didn’t visit for brunch, we noticed the menu has a creative variety of options including fresh baked Cinnamon Rolls!

Relay FCelebrates or Life of Reston

At Relay For Life of Reston, the smell of barbeque is in the air, participants are taking turns walking a track. It’s a colorful celebration with decorated campsites, fun and games. Most importantly the spirit of bringing the community together to fight cancer is strong and celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

Approximately 700 people turn out annually for Relay For Life (RFL) of Reston at South Lakes High School. “We celebrate those recovering from cancer, commemorate those lost to cancer, and commit to fighting back against cancer,” says Reston resident Mary Saunders, the community manager for RFL of Reston of the American Cancer Society (ACS).

Reston’s founder and a cancer survivor, Robert E. Simon, Jr. was an annual fixture at RFL of Reston from its creation in 1997 through 2014.

Delegate Ken Plum, also a cancer survivor, has been with the event since the beginning, too.

RFL of Reston has raised more than $5.4 million for ACS, the largest non-profit funder of cancer research outside the federal government. ACS also provides free programs in Reston such as Road to Recovery (provides cancer patients with rides to treatment) and Look Good Feel Better (helps female patients cope with the physical side effects of cancer treatment).

“Relay is a festival combined with an athletic event,” describes Saunders. “We have activities for all ages. You can stay as long as you want— many groups camp overnight.”

The barbeque and fried fish is a fundraiser by the Omicron Kappa Kappa (OKK) chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and a 2017 Best of Reston honoree. “Since Relay aligns with our community service focus, it resonates with our fraternity,” says Dr. Gary C. Powell, a past Basileus (president) of OKK and ten-year Reston resident. “We have over 20 guys who formed a team. We bring our families, enjoy the outdoors, walk the track, and contribute to a great cause.

We raise about $1,000 annually for the Society, plus the barbeque proceeds. When the Relay participants smell good barbeque, they cannot resist it!”

“Everyone’s favorite part of Relay is the luminaria ceremony,” adds Saunders. “After dark, we light luminaria bags and spell out the word HOPE. We walk the track ringed with luminaria.

It’s inspiring.” There are more than 5,000 Relays For Life nationwide.

DAWN PRICE BABY Dawn Price moved to Northern Virginia from California. She earned her BS in Accounting and attended Santa Clara Law School for her law degree.

Most of her corporate career was in the Bay Area working for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

When she moved to VA, Dawn knew she wanted to run her own business. She opened her first store, Dawn Price Baby, a children’s specialty shop, in DC Eastern Market. She now owns 4 stores in metro DC including one in Reston Town Center. One of Dawn’s exciting challenges was expanding Dawn Price Baby.

Growth happened pretty quickly, and it required considerable change in the systems operations to go from a single store to a multi-store company. Dawn mentions, “I have always pushed myself to achieve more and do more. I have always worked, even at a very young age. I liked the freedom and feeling of power over the choices in life it gave me.” From early on, Dawn knew to surround herself with a supportive team environment to help reach her goals.

The changing economy creates challenges in the retail world. It requires due diligence on knowing what to buy, quantities to buy, changing trends—it can be a difficult but exciting process. ‘Raised Reston!’

Joe Camarda It was the spring of 1969 when Joe Camarda’s family moved their 4 boys to Reston, settling on Deerdell Lane in South Reston. Joe’s parents still live there today.

At the time, Lake Anne Elementary was experiencing overcrowding and the county had shifted the 6th graders to the old Herndon High Building on the campus of Herndon Middle School (or Herndon Intermediate School, as it was known back then).

There was no air conditioning and with 4 or 5 sixth grade classes located there, Joe says that it had a sort-of ‘Lord of the Flies,’ feel to it.

His education continued on the Herndon Intermediate School campus and in 7th grade, he took a class called ESG, or English Social Studies and Guidance. It was taught by Mr. Young and Mr. Watson. The class focused on integrating current events with History. Given the ongoing Vietnam War, Joe said rebellion was everywhere, and this class helped the students to make sense of what was going on in the country and the community.

One of the most memorable Reston experiences for young Joe was the day in 1971 that some monkeys escaped from the infamous ‘Monkey House’ (Hazelton Labs) at Isaac Newton Square. (1995 best-selling book, The Hot Zone) After escaping, the monkeys made their way to the roof of the Camarda’s home where they spent the day. The family called Vern Walker, the director of development and use of common outdoor lands in Reston (for whom the Vernon Walker Nature Center is named) for assistance. Vern attempted, unsuccessfully, to coax them down. The monkeys were intent on staying.

Joe and his brothers spent the afternoon and evening tossing up bananas and apples and watching them eat. By the next morning, the monkeys had moved on.

Joe and his wife, Marcia, have raised their two sons in Reston. Joe is the principal at Camvest, LP, a private equity firm. Some of his fondest Reston memories, both as a child and as an adult are of the fields at Baron Cameron. Joe coached both of his sons in soccer there and met many of his current friends on the sidelines.

Q What gave you the idea to start an Errand Service business?

A In 2005, my second child was born with a rare

genetic syndrome, Cockayne Syndrome. About the same time, my aging mother moved in with us. I was juggling a family with two children (one with special needs) my mother’s health needs, along with a full time job. I needed some extra help and figured other people did also. I decided to start an errand/care service, and in August 2010, A Second Me was launched.

What services does A Second Me offer? Do you specialize in any particular area?

Our most common asked for services include: grocery shopping (with or for our clients), Weekly To Do list tasks around the house, light housekeeping including laundry and dishes, driving to doctor appointments, companionship, research or ordering online, house organization, meal prep, donation drops and much more! The list is always growing.

What was your background prior to starting A Second Me? Worked at Freddie Mac for 21 years.

What is most rewarding about running your business?

I’m in the ‘Helping’ business—I find it very rewarding. As well, I like the freedom to adapt to client needs. Though some of our clients request us for just one specific time, most use our service regularly for various needs.

They become like family. I enjoy tailoring my business to each person/family. Since we are small, we can adjust quickly and offer the details that make a difference.

What is the biggest challenge of running your own business?

Starting and running a business is an interesting learning curve! There are many challenges. A few that come to mind for me are getting out of my comfort zone, wearing multiple hats, making the inevitable growth mistakes, adapting to new and changing technology, finding time for everything, and patience while the business grows. Learning how to live without a paycheck for a while is a challenge any new entrepreneur typically has to accept!

Do you have any suggestions for others considering starting a business?

First, I’d say stick to your gut and concept.

While others may not see your vision early on, trust that dedicating passion to your idea will lead to your success. Hire others to help with skills you don’t have or want to spend time doing. Learn to delegate. Join networking groups and associations. Adjust when needed.

Reston Community Center (RCC) is known for offering thousands of recreational, educational, social and cultural programs and events each year.

The objective of this diverse range of programming is to increase leisure opportunities for our community members while enhancing their quality of life. These programs continue to flourish but we realize that many individuals have competing priorities and very busy schedules. As a result, we launched “eLearning” – a robust catalog of online educational and professional certification courses.

Our online learning program features more than one hundred courses and certificate programs that can be used for personal and professional development. A sluggish economy and a desire to promote growth and opportunity have brought about a new initiative that offers great promise for the Commonwealth. The GO is about Growth and Opportunity in Virginia’s future by focusing on the economic needs of each region of the state.

The Virginia General Assembly and Governor Terry McAuliffe approved a statewide business-led, bi-partisan initiative aimed at providing a new framework for strengthening the economy of each region of the Commonwealth through collaboration among members of local business, education and government communities. It recognizes the great economic diversity of Virginia and the reality that single solutions applied statewide have not worked in the past.

Northern Virginia business leaders have organized a Northern Virginia Regional Council of GO Virginia made up of twenty-eight business and educational leaders.

A coalition of Northern Virginia Chambers and regional business, education and economic development leaders chose the membership from among applicants after a vetting process.

In a time of slow growth and uncertainty in the regional economy brought about by changes in federal government procurement and increasing competitiveness, the Northern Virginia Regional Council of GO Virginia is tasked with development of a regional economic development strategy. The Council will review and prioritize projects focused on the economic future of the region. Projects will be funded by the Commonwealth’s GO initiative in partnership with other private and public sector entities in the region. At the same time, councils in other regions of the state will be developing their plan to meet the unique needs of their areas. All plans and funding are subject to approval by the State GO Virginia Board.

Sometimes rapid changes in the economy along with an uncertain future require quick and targeted changes in workforce training and adaptation. GO Virginia and its local component Northern Virginia Regional Council offers hope for a growing economy filled with opportunities.

A quick refresher: In 2005, Northwestern Mutual bought into Reston National Golf Course, both the property and the business, for $5,009,819. Despite the fact that this land was designated in the County land records as permanent open space, Northwestern Mutual, working under the name RN Golf, attempted to assert rights to redevelop the golf course for residential purposes. Fairfax County, Reston Association, Rescue Reston, and Reston homeowners opposed RN Golf in a legal case that ended in December 2015 and was finalized in March 2016 when RN Golf attorneys filed a letter with the Supreme Court of Virginia indicating they would not pursue an appeal. They did say they were keeping their options open.

Northwestern Mutual bought into a golf course, and a golf course is what they have. In March, golf course management company Billy Casper Golf, headquartered in Reston and manager of RNGC, recognized it as regional “Top Performer of the Year.”

NOW NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL IS LOOKING TO SELL. Who will buy the property with this successful golf business but limited land use designation? This is an ideal property to put into a conservation trust. This may give the owners a tax break and will give Reston some much needed peace amongst the incredible amount of development which zoning does allow around the new metro stations.

For the non-golfers, wildlife lovers and staunch environmentalists: please remember that Reston National Golf Course is far more than a golf course. It follows Audubon International environmental management practices and is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program golf course. It is home to an amazing variety of wildlife, including foxes, deer, and birds.

People and their dogs hike and run the trails that run through the course. Reston National connects with the Walker Nature Center and 2 lakes. It is part of Reston’s unique fabric that makes Reston a desirable community.

When it comes to business makeup, we all want to look polished, professional and even a bit fashionable.

Depending on your work industry, those words can mean different things. However, most women, regardless of profession can agree that foundation should match the skin, and colors should complement the wearer, with all makeup blended well.

Recently, three Reston businesswomen met with me for business-minded makeovers and fun. Each lady has her own style and approach to skincare routines and makeup application, but all three know that looking sharp on the job leads to success! Ultimately, you’ll want to refine your business look to what makes you feel most comfortable.

You can find helpful makeup tips online, at cosmetic stores or by reaching out to a makeup/skincare consultant. Practice makes perfect!

JoAnne Adams, a Coldwell Banker real estate agent, is an active Reston Chamber of Commerce member and is in front of clients throughout her day. She knows that looking professional drives results. We started by applying a beige foundation, as well as concealer to lighten and open up her eyes. To bring out her pretty eyes, we applied a shimmery white eyeshadow to her lids, along with a muted dove gray to the crease area. We applied a soft gunmetal gray eyeliner to add emphasis and lift to her eyes and finished with black mascara. A cool berry color was used on her cheeks, and on her lips a shimmery berry crème lipstick. The colors coordinated beautifully with her outfit.

Susan Banville, a mortgage officer for Embrace Home Loans is an active member of the Reston Chamber of Commerce and the community. Susan prefers stylish but less structured clothes for work.

For makeup, she prefers a natural look, primarily earth tones, lightly applied. We started by applying a beige foundation to even out skin tone, along with eye concealer. We used a shimmery beige on Susan’s eyelids and a shimmery chocolate brown as an accent color, followed by dark brown eyeliner and black mascara. A neutral blush gave a natural-looking hint of color. We finished with a moisture-rich lipstick in rose, with brown undertones to complement her skin tone.

Heather Wreath lives in Reston and works at Mid-Atlantic Settlements.

She has a bit more flexibility in her style which is great since Heather likes a little bling. First, we chose a beige liquid foundation with luminous finish. Next, a shimmery oyster shell for her eye lids, and a smoky, matte lavender for her crease. The lavender was a fun change for Heather. It made her green eyes shine. We finished her eyes with black eyeliner and mascara. Her cheek color was a shimmery peach/ pink, followed with a hint of shimmer powder on the apples of her cheeks. For her lips, we chose a peachy pink gloss to complement her pink blouse. Heather is now ready to feel confident helping her clients!

Spring Real Estate Market Summary The big story today in the Reston real estate market is a lack of inventory. Buyers are finding it difficult to secure their chosen home. They are often forced to compete in multiple offer situations. Meanwhile, sellers are enjoying the benefits of a strong Seller’s Market. It’s not uncommon for prices to escalate above the initial asking price. Sellers may also benefit from more favorable terms including shorter escrow periods, waived appraisal contingencies, and buyers willing to purchase their home in “as-is” condition. We don’t know how long this market will last. If you have been thinking about selling in Reston it’s a good time to ask a Realtor for a free Comparative Market Analysis to find out how much your home is worth.

NEW LISTINGS: The number of new properties placed for sale each month has been increasing in 2017. However, March was down 7% from the previous year. Even though inventory is increasing this year because of the Spring housing market, it’s still relatively low.

Buyers may have over 200 homes to choose from yet there are fewer homes when compared to last year.

We currently have less than 2 months of supply in Reston, which means it’s a Seller’s market.

CLOSED SALES: The number of closed sales in Reston during the first quarter of 2017 was up compared to 2016. It’s been up year over year for the last three years. In fact, every quarter has been better than the same quarter in the previous year since 2014. With the number of new listings decreasing year over year and the number of closed sales increasing year over year we can expect to see strong demand for homes in Reston. This will continue to put upward pressure on home prices.

Historically, Single Family Homes, Townhomes, and Condos in Reston sold at about the same rate. In 2017, Townhomes are selling in less than 2 weeks while Condos are sitting for almost 2 months.

5 Costly Mistakes to Avoid when Selling a Home

1. DON’T SET THE PRICE TOO HIGH. Don’t set the price too low either. Longer days on market and price adjustments will likely net you less money.

2. DON’T SKIMP ON THE MARKETING. You’ll need more than a “For Sale” sign and a few flyers. Employ a powerful marketing strategy. To get the highest price you want as many people to see your home as possible.

3. DON’T NEGLECT TO TAKE ACTION. Be proactive on a daily basis. Call friends, family, and neighbors to see if they might know of a buyer. Network with local Realtors and business owners. Harness the power of word-of-mouth.

4. DON’T WAIT FOR INSPECTIONS TO FIX THINGS. When buyers see things that are broken they also worry about things they can’t see.

5. DON’T LOSE YOUR COOL. Buyers want to get the best deal possible too. If you get a lowball offer or the buyer makes an odd request, you don’t have to accept it. Stay calm and respond based on what’s best for your situation.

Rita Bolle has lived in Reston since 1968. She originally lived on Lake Anne where she raised her 2 sons. She moved to Stratford House in 2001. Rita enjoys the convenience of living next to Reston Town Center. “It’s great to be able to walk across the street to the many restaurants or activities.” Many of my friends are also in condos in RTC, and we all meet regularly for happy hours, birthdays and fun. I don’t use my car very often. I live on the 14th floor so I have wonderful views including the Tysons skyline.

2. Midtown North is a mid-rise boutique building off New Dominion Parkway that was completed in 2007. The 78 residences are modeled after New York lofts and feature floor-to-ceiling windows and contemporary, open floor plans.

3. Stratford Park Place is a garden style low rise condominium development located across from Reston Town Center on Reston Parkway and adjacent to the W&OD Trail.

Bryce Greene grew up in Reston and knew early on he wanted to live in a condo when he returned to Reston after college. “It wasn’t as scary as owning your own home and the maintenance and expenses that come with a house or townhouse.” says Bryce. Though he had to work 2 jobs, 6 days a week to make it happen, Bryce was one of the first Stratford Park Place owners. IN THE KNOW! SOAPSTONE CAMPFIRE RING

On a warm and rainy Thursday evening in early June 2011, 10 rising first graders from Hunters Woods Elementary School celebrated their first year of Girl Scouts gathering at the Soapstone Campfire Ring to sing songs, play games, roast hot dogs and enjoy s’mores. While the quick downpour faded to a drizzle, parents, including myself, huddled under the small pavilion and remarked how fortunate we were to have access to so many community amenities, like this picnic area with campfire ring, as well as playgrounds and paved trails along the Glade Stream in the neighborhood. Sometime later, I learned the campfire ring was designed and built by a longtime Restonian—my neighbor, Allen Male.

In 1975, Allen was an active member of the Reston Home Owners Association (RHOA) youth maintenance group, which was responsible for landscaping around Reston pools and tennis courts. His outdoor volunteer efforts inspired his Eagle Scout project—to enhance a circle of stones on an open plot of land found off the beaten path with a functional fire circle, log seats, mulched trail, a waste bin and signage. Allen’s elaborate plan was approved by the Boy Scouts Troop 1970 Committee in March 1975. By September, with the help of friends including Jeff Walker, Mike Dawson, Pete Flynn and Frank Glang, the Soapstone Campfire Ring was completed. For six hot summer months, they had sawed fallen Maple trees, dragged logs into place and painstakingly secured them to the ground with rebar so that Reston would have a safe and dedicated recreational area to relax around a campfire. The Campfire Ring is still there today!

Maybe start with a visit to the Walker Nature Center to secure your campfire date! As you gather around the blazing fire, remember the many Restonians, like Allen Male and his high school buddies, who helped shape our community. Maybe you’ll be inspired to leave your mark too!

Birthday Bash for Truman!

At 70 years old, Truman, an Andean Condor that resides at Roer’s Zoofari is currently the oldest Andean Condor in the world living in human care, according to the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS). The next oldest Andean Condor is reported to be 62 years old and resides in Columbia, South America. According to zoo owner, Vanessa Roer, “Truman’s hatch day is definitely something Roer’s Zoofari staff is excited to celebrate!”

The celebration is scheduled for Sunday, June 18th (Father’s Day) —a few days prior to his actual hatch day of June 21st. Guests to the zoo will be able to sign Truman’s birthday card and participate in crafts and activities relating to condors all day long. At 2:00 pm Truman will be presented with a special meat cake and a piñata.

Cupcakes prepared by a local bakery will be available for zoo guests to purchase. All cupcake proceeds will go to benefit the Peregrine Fund which supports research and community education throughout the Andean Condor’s native range.

Truman was hatched June 21st, 1947 at the San Diego Zoo where he was hand-raised. Over the years, he has lived at several zoological facilities including the Kansas City Zoo, Omaha Zoo and Mill Mountain Zoo before coming to the Reston Zoo (now Roer’s Zoofari) in 2009.

“To our knowledge, he was never able to keep a mate or father offspring,” explains Roer, “Nonetheless he is an adored member of our zoo family.”

Andean Condors can live up to 70 years in the wild. They are threatened or endangered in much of their native range that stretches from Columbia to Tierra del Fuego. These birds of prey are sometimes shot or poisoned and even killed for rituals. Condors are strict carnivores that scavenge for their meals. Feeding primarily on large animals that are already dead, they are nature’s clean-up crew. By consuming dead and decaying meat, the condors reduce disease-causing bacteria that could make humans ill and contaminate the environment.

... a Mom Around Reston Of Dogs and Humans Four humans to one rescue dog sounded like overkill when we parked outside Reston’s PetSmart for our first puppy training lessons. We exited the vehicle cautiously. While I juggled paperwork, Bubba carried the treats, Hubs remained tethered to our 45-lb mass of furry energy while Riley lopped alongside Goldie. Making it through the parking lot without causing a car accident was a huge feat.

Goldie had won her way into our home only weeks earlier by rolling on her back to give us her belly at an adoption event.

Then there were the eyes. I didn’t closely read her medical file estimating she was one year old and spayed until after I forked over the check and took her home with us. Four weeks later, she acted more like a young puppy than the calmer dog we’d hoped for.

As we approached the PetSmart entrance, Goldie recoiled. Sliding doors were a novelty. A chorus of encouragement from us coaxed her through the opening. I’d scouted the training location prior to our arrival and knew exactly which aisle to navigate to avoid too many canine interactions that might get ugly if our eager puppy tried to jump on a geriatric dog or mistook a small dog for a squirrel. We were nearly to the room when I noticed the line up of other pet owners waiting outside a closed door.

“Just keep circling,” I ordered Hubs.

When the time came, I corralled my gang. Inside the room, I discovered our dog weighed twice as much as the next largest puppy. Three dogs were smaller than the throw pillows Goldie had obliterated the previous week. As the instructor began introductions, Goldie barked and lunged towards the center to meet her fellow trainees. I growled at Bubba to distract her with treats and Riley physically blocked Goldie’s path. In the midst of our mayhem, I noticed one entire wall consisted of windows where our neighbor magically appeared and waved as she pushed her shopping cart filled with kitty litter.

For an hour, our trainer hovered near us, placating Goldie with sweet potato treats while instructing us how to get our animal to “sit,” “down,” and “look at me.” She did get a chance to meet some canine friends too. Back at home, I watched the kids practice with Goldie and realized I’d been so busy managing my human crew, I hadn’t paid attention to training the dog.

Making an IMPACT Michele Bresnick Walsh In early October 2008, Michele Bresnick, a 1988 South Lakes High School graduate, became engaged to Mike Walsh. Three weeks later, Michele went to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a routine blood test. Fifteen minutes later, Michele’s doctor informed her that rather than going directly to work at Gordon Feinblatt, the Baltimore law firm where Michele was a partner, she would immediately be admitted to the hospital.

Michele recalls: “The doctor said, ‘You have acute myeloid leukemia.

We are finding you a bed. You will start chemo tonight. Plan to be here for the next 4-6 weeks.”

Michele endured four weeks of intense chemotherapy, but in order to survive, she would need a bone marrow transplant. Her sister, Wendi Bresnick Runyon (SLHS class of 1990), was tested however was not a match. Michele had to hope for a match via the national bone marrow registry.

In January 2009, an anonymous perfect match was identified, and the person agreed to provide the marrow for Michele’s transplant. Michele needed more chemo first and then suffered a bout of pneumonia. Finally, on March 4, she received her transplant at what she fondly refers to as “Hotel Hopkins,” where she had spent 70 days.

The road to recovery continued for several months, during which she and Mike Walsh planned their wedding, marrying on August 29, 2009.

Today, Michele is still a partner at Gordon Feinblatt and provides pro-bono services as president of There Goes My Hero, a non-profit organization founded in 2009 by Erik Sauer, a fellow leukemia patient at Hopkins when Michele was there (www.theregoesmyhero.org). The organization recruits people for the bone marrow registry and provides nutritious meals for families of blood cancer patients. Michele says with understandable pride, “We have added almost 13,000 people to the registry and have found 186 matches, of which 23 have gone on to life-saving transplants.

We have also provided over 100,000 meals to patients in need.”

Michele volunteers for numerous other non-profit organizations, and has been named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women three times by The Maryland Daily Record.

Albert Mensah: Wrestler

Junior Albert Mensah is a star wrestler for the wrestling team, who recently went to the state wrestling competition in Chesapeake, Virginia, after winning the regional championship. He began wrestling during freshman year when Coach Brown, history teacher and wrestling coach for South Lakes, introduced him to the sport. In his first tournament at South Lakes, he lost against Yorktown, but that didn’t stop him from working hard to become an amazing wrestler.

Albert goes to the arranged South Lakes practices and some off-season ones as well.

In addition to practicing, he eats healthy, exercises, and lifts weights. He has been to eleven wrestling tournaments this year alone.

His greatest wrestling achievement is winning the regional championship. Winning this title led him to the state tournament.

Although he lost both of his matches, they were very close; the matches went into overtime and were lost by only one point.

This is just the beginning for him, though; he says that he can see himself wrestling in college, if he gets the opportunity.

Albert is a talented wrestler, who has put in hard work to his sport. He is very passionate about wrestling and loves the sport. For those looking to start wrestling, Albert has a bit of advice.

Afua Biney: Speed Skater

Student by day, speed skater by night, South Lakes High School boasts student Afua Biney, a junior who won bronze at the Junior Short Track Championships for speed skating. Speed skating, for those unfamiliar, is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other while travelling a certain distance on skates. Her medal is the first in 21 years for the USA. Afua first started figure skating when she was five years old. Once skating, she was told that she was too fast and should try speed skating. She started speed skating when she was only six years old, having her father drive her to Washington DC early in the morning for five years to train. She started competing between the ages of 10 and 11 and has been to countless events since.

“My biggest achievement is definitely competing at the Junior Short Track competition this year,” Afua said. This is not her first time trying to make it to this competition though. Last year, during junior trials, she unfortunately broke her ankle. She almost thought of quitting, but through determination to make it in next year stayed.

“My best speed, and what I won the bronze medal in, is a 500, which is also the shortest distance,” Afua commented on her bronze medal. She also competed in the World Cup Short Track Speed Skating in Dresden, Germany.

Afua spends 6 days a week preparing, with breaks on Thursday. She is working on getting better for her future competitions, hopefully making it to the olympics in the near future. She says for those who are looking into skating to, “have fun and don’t let coaches say you can’t do it, because you can.”

“Keep on practicing,” Mensah said, “Practice will make you a better wrestler. Get more exposure and wrestle as many people as possible. The best thing you can do is just be in the wrestling environment”.

The “Whole Child” Thrives at Local Private School Imagine a child wholly prepared for advanced education, civic engagement and life-long success by the time they graduate the eighth grade. Edlin Director, Linda Schreibstein and her staff have created a unique academic program that prepares students for increasingly competitive and rigorous advanced education, while cultivating the development of the whole student.

On Saturday, March 4, 2017, Edlin School sent four eighth grade students to the You Be the Chemist competition at Marymount University.

The national, interactive academic challenge encourages students in grades 5–8 to explore chemistry concepts and apply them in real-world applications. Students competed in a quiz bowl format, answering several rounds of multiple choice questions. Most of the team will move on to the state championships in Richmond.

Edlin’s students perform well in multiple subjects. “We give them the opportunity to work with hands-on experiences,” per Science Department Head, Ryan Epp. “By using the inquiry method and open-ended questions in all instruction, our curriculum allows many approaches towards solving problems.”

The opportunities available at Edlin prepared the students to excel at You Be the Chemist, and many other competitions. Edlin School took first place at the Future City Mid-Atlantic Competition, and were recognized for Most Sustainable Environmental Practices at the National level. Edlin students fielded a strong team at the Mathcounts competition as well.

Eight Edlin students were finalists in the school National Geographic Bee; three Edlin students advanced to Virginia’s State Chess Championships; and the Edlin team was recognized for creativity and risk-taking at the Odyssey of the Mind competition, earning the Renatra Fusca Award - the first time in 20 years that a K–2nd grade team took the award.

Reston Children’s Center Celebrates 50 Years in Reston Reston Children’s Center marks its 50th anniversary this year! RCC began operations in 1967 with a $1,000 donation from the Reston Foundation and just 30 children from preschool to school age. At that time, the school met in the United Christian Parish building on North Shore Drive. In 1980, Reston Children’s Center broke ground at its current home at 11825 Olde Crafts Drive. Today RCC serves more than 250 children.

Over its 50-year history, RCC has maintained its 501(c)(3) status. The award-winning child care center has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1988 and the National School-Age Care Alliance (NSACA) since 2001. The center has been featured as a national model for child care and coops in numerous local and national television segments, articles, and even a book.

“This year marks a significant milestone in the history of our center, the Reston Children’s Center community, and the lives of those who were and are privileged to be part of this remarkable community,” said Executive Director Fahemeh Pirzadeh, who recently celebrated her own 30year anniversary with RCC. “This year gives us a chance to celebrate our founding, reflect on our success, revel in the sense of community we have built over five decades, and imagine our next 50 years.”

It’s spring, and that means baby farm animals! Did you know that there are cows, goats, pigs, sheep, ducks and other livestock living just around the corner on West Ox Road?

Who knew?! If you time your visit right, at this time of year, you’ll meet lots of adorable animal babies.

Minutes from busy Reston is Kidwell Farm, situated on Frying Pan Farm Park, a working demonstration farm that preserves and interprets a 1920‘s thru 1950’s farm with year round farm animals that you can visit any day of the week! At 4:00 pm each day, enjoy watching the farmer milking cows or feeding the animals. You may even get to give milking a try yourself.

Established in the 1700’s, Frying Pan Farm Park is a local gem.

It is run by Fairfax County Park Authority. It is open daily from 9am – 5pm. In 2016, there were 700,000 visitors. The park offers year round fun, but the spring is a favorite time for many visitors.

With spring comes amazing new animal births and farm life. Wobbly feet and wiggly miniatures, snuggled under heat lamps, entertain the crowds. The farm is fun for all ages!

Farmer, Paul Nicholson who keeps tracks of births and weaning gave us a general schedule for the 2017 season.

“Baby goats and lambs are usually weaned by June 1.

Squealing baby piglets arrive in April or May. This year, two sets are due around mid-May,” says Nicholson. That means prime visiting cuteness in May and June! When was the last time you were up next to snorting piglets?! According to Nicholson, while some Hereford cows were born in April, an Angus is due in June or July. The calves will stay close to mom and nurse until near year end.

Visitor, Ashley from Herndon tells us, “This is one of the few places in the area we can go for a nice long walk or hike and get lost back in the trails. It’s great we can visit the animals for free. It means we can come often! The history of this place is kind of neat and deserves to be preserved.”

What’s New at Greater Reston Arts Center

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) has a new CEO and Curator, Lily Siegel, who hit the ground running in January with preparations for the busy seasons to come at GRACE. Siegel arrived in her position already familiar with GRACE’s reputation as a gallery, and its renowned Northern Virginian Fine Arts Festival held annually at Reston Town Center. She says “I am truly looking forward to experiencing the festival for the first time and connecting with all of our artists and viewers.”

Now on exhibit through August 18 at GRACE is The Great Dismal Swamp, a show of works by nationally recognized painter, sculptor, and mixed-media artist, Radcliffe Bailey. The free exhibition is open Tuesday–Sunday from 11 am–5 pm, making it an added benefit for festival-goers as well as locals.

All year round, GRACE presents intriguing events such as talks by artists and curators, art-making activities for all ages, educational programs, new exhibitions, and “GRACE Art” education in schools.

GRACE’s acclaimed offerings are supported through its largest fundraiser, the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival, now rated in the top 20 of thousands of outdoor art fairs in North America.

At this year’s festival, on May 20 and 21, many favorite artists will return along with many that are new, coming from across the nation, Canada, and Japan. The original art displayed in more than 200 mini-galleries never fails to amaze—classic and surreal images in paintings and mixed media, uniquely designed jewelry at all price points, functional and decorative works in ceramic and glass, amazing photography, large and small sculptures for indoors and out, and much more.

The Friday night Festival Launch Party at Reston Town Center Pavilion is also a benefit for GRACE, and everyone is invited to buy a ticket to celebrate and mingle with the artists before the weekend begins.

Our Community Comes Together

Community Matters Reston

is a volunteer group recently formed to promote community-building initiatives and outreach. It grew out of a meeting of friends & neighbors of Margot Lebow & Donna Shaffer. The first meeting was held at Cafe Montmartre, Lake Anne Plaza, in November 2016.

Many of the attendees at the first meeting were concerned about upholding the legacy of Bob Simon—embracing the values of inclusion and diversity and kindness that were woven into the fabric of Reston when it was first built. As we stood up to speak, we each shared our hopes and fears, hugged people recently met and old friends we had known for 30 or 40 years. The group decided to begin with a focus on an organization that already had programs in place to help vulnerable families and children. I reached out to local artist and friend, Dana Scheurer and commissioned a graphic to represent a welcoming and safe hometown, incorporating the safety pin icon from Britain.

That piece of art is now a decal, thanks to Fairfax Screen Printing. It can be purchased at small change consignments store (Lake Anne Plaza) & Cornerstones offices (11150 Sunset Hills Drive) for $5 each, or 5 for $20. You can see the decal around our community on shop windows, on homes and houses of worship, on backpacks and diaper bags, cars and bikes. Every dollar raised goes directly to Cornerstones, which runs the Embry Rucker Family Shelter, Laurel Learning Childcare Center, transitional housing placement, a food pantry, and much more.

Community Matters Reston has set up a Facebook page, formed a FB community group, and setup a website, thanks to Judy Johnston. The group holds regular meetings thanks to Eileen Minarik, owner of Sunset Hills Montessori School and a group member. All are welcome to join. We are working towards a partnership with RestON Opportunity Neighborhood, an organization that focuses on academic achievement and readiness, family resiliency and self-sufficiency, and connected and engaged youth.
