Kat Toussaint, Publisher
We dedicate the Fall/ Winter issue of Around Reston to Robert E. Simon, founder of Reston who passed away quietly in his home on September 21, 2015 at 101 years young. Mr. Simon was a visionary. He was a leader. He was a friend. He will be missed by all.
Thank you to those who shared the photos and messages included in the following pages. This has been an emotional issue to compile, one of tears mixed with joy for the man who contributed so much to our lives and gave us ‘a place called Reston’. It was an honor for Around Reston Magazine to host the Candlelight Vigil held for Bob Simon at Lake Anne Plaza on September 25. Thank you to Pastor Tim Ward, Restoration Church, Lake Anne Coffee Shop, Reston Chorale, Amy Cox, Video: Mediavolution, Laurentina Photography, Jim McClave, Audrey Anderson, Rita Bolle, and Frank Sagstetter who donated their time and resources to help ensure the evening was a memorable, heartfelt event. Thank you to the speakers who shared their stories. And thank you to all who came out and made this a wonderful evening. Rest in Peace, Bob Simon. ~ Kat Toussaint

Ever-Present Bob Simon Seems like just yesterday that I saw Bob Simon, but it could not be so. He has been gone for some time now. Maybe it was Bronze Bob at Lake Anne that reminded me of him. Or maybe it was his initials RES in the name Reston that he gave to the community he founded. Whatever! Happily he is still with us in spirit in so many different ways. Bob Simon could have taken the more than 6,000 acres of Virginia farmland in which he invested and diced it up as allowed under the then existing land use laws and made a fortune creating another subdivision. Instead he had a vision to create a community where persons of all ages and backgrounds could live, work, and play. And he was more successful in breathing life into such a place than anyone else. So many of the amenities that those of us who live here take for granted are special as individual components of the community but truly are unique when taken as a whole. I will see you again soon, Bob, I am sure—not in body but in spirit. Maybe it will be on trails on which I walk almost daily that will remind me of you. Or it may be at events for little children we both always attend for it was always clear to me that you liked the children and were most concerned that they could get the best education possible, pre-school through college. Could be at Town Center events, the Farmer’s Market, musical performances, but you will be there in in our memory, of course. Our home in this community that you and we love so dearly is better because of your vision and your ever-present spirit. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

MESSAGES TO BOB SIMON FROM AROUND RESTON FANS I am truly saddened by my friend Robert E Simon’s death (Bob) as we all called him. This gentleman was truly an amazing person. His visions and ideas for Reston were extraordinary. To read his story will blow your minds. To meet him in person and to have conversations with him on the walking trails of Lake Anne was awesome wisdom at its best and a blessing. I will truly miss him on the trails with his walker and big smile and I will miss the conversations.... God Bless you Bob, A job well done. It’s time for you to rest now. — Cassie Gainey II
Thank you Mr. Simon to give the new generation of leaders a place to grow, learn and make friends. We will always remember your achievements!! — Laura Ramirez
I walked by the sundial at the Walker Nature Center this morning and remembered all the years he stood there sending us off on the annual Nature House Fund Run. He loved to see people being active! — Connie Hartke
Dear Mr. Simon, I was able to thank you in person a few times, and I will forevermore be thankful, for a place called Reston. I arrived Reston almost 4 decades ago and grew up in the Lake Anne area. My roots are here. Now my own children get to enjoy a very special place created by a very special person, and we thank you. — Mel Davidson
Thank you, Robert E. Simon, for this wonderful place that I have lived in for the past 30 years. Because of your vision and hard work, my three daughters were able to grow up in the best possible environment, and I hope to continue to enjoy Reston for many more years to come. Reston Peace, Mr. Simon! — Marcie Miller
I will miss seeing Mr. Simon on my walks around Lake Anne. He was always so cheerful and enjoyed talking. I’ve lived here since 1969 and raised my family here. Thanks for your vision. Lake Anne has been a special place to walk to with my children and grandchildren. — Barbara Eisner Kaufmann
It was truly our pleasure to have Bob as such an enthusiastic audience member and supporter of NextStop Theatre and Elden Street Players for so many years. We will miss you in the Front Row, but we suspect you’ll be leading ovations from our “Seventh.”
Bob Simon I have admired your dream of Reston for years...I pray that the Greed Mongers don’t destroy your dream and your master plan. Thank you for your creativity and hard work. RIP. — Donna Lannes-Robuck
Bob created an extraordinary hometown — based on 7 founding principles that combined a passion for nature, for sharing & ensuring access. — Susann Gerstein
Thank you, Mr Simon for making your dream community the reality where we are fortunate to grow as a family. — Shannon Geary
I came to know Bob Simon through my work leading the development team for the Lake Anne Redevelopment, and while always outspoken, his comments and observations were always thoughtful and constructive. I came to know him as a friend and even, if he did not think of himself this way, as a mentor to me as I continue down the road of real estate place making that embrace his principles. His bright smile and friendly demeanor will be missed, but his legacy will be with us for many generations to come, and will inspire thoughtful work elsewhere as well. — David L. Peter

www.melonelawpc.com Piece of Mind – Your Estate Plan There are two essential pieces to any estate plan, the healthcare directive and the power of attorney. In the case of an unforeseen accident, these two documents can help your family members avoid costly and time-consuming litigation and ensure your desires are accomplished. Whether your estate plan is a simple will or involves a complicated trust, the healthcare directive and power of attorney is essential for protecting your estate and your loved ones. Without these pieces in place, your loved ones will
have to pursue guardianship and conservatorship proceedings through the court, adding time, cost, and complexity to an already difficult time. Having an attorney review, and if necessary, revise your estate plan now can save your family from costly litigation in the future. Whatever your estate planning goals are, your plan will be customized to your specifications to ensure your wishes are fulfilled. Call today for a free consultation.

Did you know that Reston has its own museum?! The Reston Museum first opened its doors on Lake Anne Plaza in November 1997. The initial idea for the Reston Museum came from Sarah Larson and Susann Gerstein, owner of Small Change Consignments in Lake Anne. The two were inspired by the recent designation of Lake Anne Plaza as a Fairfax County historic district. Larson believed that public events based on Reston’s history would attract more visitors to the Plaza. In 1996 the two women formed the Lake Anne Historic District Task Force, and with input from a number of prominent citizens, their effort began to reach beyond Lake Anne to include all of Reston’s many and diverse neighborhoods. Susann Gerstein
In February 1997, Larson and Gerstein announced the formation of the Reston Historic Trust and its goal to open a museum. When the Museum opened its door in November 1997, its exhibits included the famous Reston Model, formerly used in the visitors’ center. Featured as well was a quilt made by 100 Langston Hughes eighth graders, commemorating Reston’s 30th anniversary. The Museum also launched a series of programs, including art workshops and lectures. Over the years the Museum’s collection of artifacts, written materials, photographs, exhibits, and art has continued to expand. A rehabilitation in 2009 created a modern space with exhibits showcasing Reston’s history in new, dynamic, and interactive ways. In addition to enjoying the exhibits, you can shop for Reston focused souvenirs, apparel, signature glassware, and gift items at the museum. The helpful volunteer staff is always available to answer questions. Portions of this article were taken from www.restonmuseum.org

Ten Reasons to Visit
Lake Anne in the Winter! 1. Great nightlife. Anyone who shrugs off Lake Anne during the winter would be surprised by the crowds that fill Cafe Monmartre and Kalypso’s Sports Tavern on weekends. On Friday and Saturday nights, both restaurants offer live music by a variety of performers. Kalypso’s also has trivia on Tuesday nights, karaoke on Wednesdays, and sports events all week on TV. (Photo credit: Alec Berry of Roxplosion.com)
2. Cozy places to read. Watch snow fall outside a large window as you surround yourself with literature. Reston’s Used Book Shop is set up like a living room, with a sofa, fireplace, and more books than you could finish during even the longest Snowmageddon. If you prefer to read your book with a giant latte in hand, head over to the newly renovated Lake Anne Coffee House. Choose from their locally roasted coffees and freshly baked treats, then find a seat by the window and relax the afternoon away. (Photo credit: Charlotte Geary)
3. Fun events are happening. In early December each year, there is a holiday celebration called Jingle on Lake Anne, which includes crafts, a petting zoo, and other family activities. The highlight of the day is Santa’s arrival by boat, an annual tradition cherished by many Reston families. This year Jingle on Lake Anne will takes place on December 5, 2015. Another great annual event is the Virginia Polar Dip, a hilarious polar plunge where hundreds of people, many in costumes, leap into the frozen lake to raise money for Camp Sunshine. This year’s plunge will take place on February 6, 2016. (Photo credit: Charlotte Geary)
4. Visit a brewery. Lake Anne Brew House is an exciting new addition to the Plaza! It is owned by Lake Anne residents who brew their own signature recipes in this stylish, waterfront nanobrewery. Even on a wintry day, you’ll love the hip, mid-century vibe of the interior while drinking a cold one. (Photo credit: Michelle Schoening) 5. See and Create Art.
Lake Anne Plaza is the home of two art galleries: Jo Ann Rose Gallery, located inside the Reston Community Center, and Reston Art Gallery and Studios, located in the ground level of the Heron House condo building. The Reston Community Center at Lake Anne also offers an open ceramics studio with drop-in hours for you to create sculpture and pottery. It’s a way to experiment with a new art form without long-term commitment. If you happen to get hooked, you can visit during the ceramics open hours any time your creative mind is needing it. (Photo credit: Reston Community Center)

6. Have fun with the kids. On days when melting snow has made your neighborhood park muddy, bring the kids or grandkids to Lake Anne to run off some energy. The Plaza is filled with structures designed for climbing, such as the children’s pyramid and the boat playground. Climbing on the fountain in the middle of the Plaza when the water is turned off is a whole new adventure. Since the whole Plaza is paved, it’s mudfree. (Photo credit: Charlotte Geary)
7. Take classes to get in shape. The Lake Anne location of the Reston Community Center is the home of most of the RCC’s fitness and wellness classes. Classes include strength and conditioning, slow flow hatha yoga, joint-friendly fitness, tumbling for kids, strength training for seniors, and plenty more. (Photo credit: Reston Community Center)
8. Shopping. Lake Anne Plaza’s Small Change Consignments is a children’s shop that specializes in gently used clothing. Every January they hold a sale where all clothes, shoes, boots, books, and baby gear are 50% off their already low prices. You can score some huge deals here in the winter months. Just next door, visit Baby Blossom, a boutique that sells high-quality baby supplies, clothing, and toys. For the finest pet food and supplies, shop at PetMAC. As you’re walking towards PetMAC, stop at Chesapeake Chocolates for ‘made in house’ chocolates, gift items, wine and craft beers. (Photo credit: Charlotte Geary)
9. Delicious food.
With three large restaurants, Lake Anne has delicious dining opportunities with international flair. Cafe Monmartre specializes in French and Vietnamese cuisine. Kalypso’s Sports Tavern is best known for its Greek and Mediterranean food, but also offers a variety of American-style kids’ meals. Singh Thai offers some of the best Thai food in Northern Virginia. (Photo credit: 123rf.com)
10. Support local businesses that help make Reston special. The winter can be a slow season for many
Lake Anne businesses. If you appreciate Lake Anne Plaza and what it adds to the Reston community, go out and visit these businesses and help them thrive all year long. (Photo credit: Charlotte Geary)

Toilets – Pour some cleaner in the bowl to soak. Next, wipe down the seat and outside of the bowl with an antibacterial wipe or spray cleaner. After that scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and finally wipe down everything again with a dry cloth to make it shine. Showers & Bathtubs – Use a cleanser that will foam or bubble. This allows you to “soak” your tub or shower, even on the vertical walls. After short soak, scrub down with scrubber and rinse. Oven Cleaning – One day, when you’re not using your oven, give it a quick spray of oven cleaner and keep it like that for 24 hours. Before you turn on your oven the next day, give it a quick wipe down. The baked on stuff comes off easier than ever.

1. COMMUNITY IS PARAMOUNT. We all have a desire to connect with people and socialize. Take time to build relationships and be involved in your community. 2. SPEAK YOUR MIND. Let your voice be heard even if other people disagree with you. Think things through and share your ideas. 3. MAKE TIME TO PLAY. Have fun and enjoy life. Take a break and get outside. Leisure time is important so think about what you love to do and then make time for it. 4. PUT PEOPLE FIRST. Appreciate the people around you regardless of age, race, beliefs, or social status. Be grateful for the people in your life. 5. NEVER GIVE UP! The bigger your dream the more troubles you'll face. Stay focused and keep moving towards it.

A Message from the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce
Who’s Calling...? I miss picking up my phone and hearing Bob Simon’s voice on the other end. At first, mind you, it took me a few moments to know who it was because Bob never would identify himself (and why should he since he was the founder of this great community where businesses thrive), he would simply tell me what the Chamber needed to do regarding the latest hot topic or issue and then simply… hang up. Bob’s first call to me was my first month on the job as President and CEO of the Chamber when again, not identifying himself, he congratulated me on my hire and provided me a laundry list of initiatives and issues I need to make myself aware of if I was going to represent the businesses in the community. Bob Simon was a visionary until the very end. His ideas were many and relevant to the day. He kept current on business trends and was never shy to express his opinion. We talked often about business issues and there was never a time when I didn’t learn something or take away a nugget of information that I could use in my role with the Chamber. I would find myself actually calling Bob to obtain his opinion on many business related topics. I came to think of myself as a friend of Bob’s. When I would call or see him, I would always ask him how he was doing and his one word answer was his calling card “healthy.” He would always reach out his hand and shake mine with a sturdy grip that let me know he was present and still having an impact on this…his community. We have many pictures of Bob in our Chamber archives but what I will miss most is his signature voice which never needed identification. Goodbye Bob, rest easy!

I Was‘Raised Reston!’ by Norman Gardner, Owner, Denny + Gardner
Reston is home. I have lived here most of my life. And there was no question that Reston was the community where I wanted to raise my own children. My parents, who were with the foreign service, bought a town house near Lake Anne in 1970 right before I was born. Right after I was born, they were stationed overseas to return in 1979. My father continued to work with the government but developed quite a reputation as the ‘Go To’ handyman for Reston. I spent many a summer helping him on odd jobs around the neighborhood. As a kid, I really enjoyed growing up in Reston – going to Forest Edge School, playing soccer and attending RHOA day camp (before it was called RA). My fondest memories are from Lake Anne Plaza. Where Café Montmarte is now was once an ice cream shop/ arcade called Sweet Tooth, which was heaven for a boy with a bunch of change in his pocket. Larry Cohn was my pharmacist and was always there with just what the doctor ordered (and a lollipop too). My father spent a lot of time at Lakeside Pharmacy helping Larry with electrical and plumbing issues, and I was always there to hold a hammer or pliers. My first job when I was 16, was working for the Reston Association on the EYM crew (environmental youth maintenance) with a bunch of other kids my age. We went around Reston and pulled weeds, mulched flowerbeds, picked up trash, etc. It was a fun summer job and we made a difference in the community. After finishing college at Virginia Tech, I moved back to Reston and continued to work with my father. My best friend, Jason Denny joined us and we eventually took over his business and began to do bigger projects. Today my father still works with us, and we specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, additions, decks and screen porches. The diverse community and architecture that the late Bob Simon created presents a lot of opportunity and challenges for us after all these years. I still love living, working and playing in Reston. Our family lives about 3 blocks from where I grew up. Both kids go to Forest Edge School where I went. Many a Saturday you will find us at Lake Anne for the farmers market and then having brunch at Café Montmartre. See you there!

A Conversation
w/ Meaghan Maillet, Connective Touch Therapeutic Massage
Hi Meaghan, Thank you for getting together with me. I’m excited to learn more about you and your business!
Q. When did you start Connective Touch Therapeutic Massage? A. I started CTTM in Miami in 1999, shortly after graduating from massage school and becoming licensed. I moved to Virginia in 2007. I just celebrated my 2 year anniversary of my office here in Reston.
What made you decide to open CTTM in Reston? One of the things that really appealed to me about Reston is how active the community is. I remember driving to see the office space and being impressed by the numbers of people out walking or riding bikes on the neighborhood trails.
What were you doing before you started Connective Touch Therapeutic Massage? Before becoming a massage therapist, I was a Recreation Therapist and worked primarily in psychiatric and physical rehabilitation hospitals. My health care background has really helped me as a massage therapist. I have confidence working with people facing different health challenges.
What education and training did you need to become a massage therapist? I completed a 650 hour program of massage therapy education to become licensed to practice massage, but over the past 16 years I have taken several hundred hours of continuing education in areas such as Advanced Sports Massage, Orthopedic Massage, Prenatal Massage and Thai Massage.
I understand you are an athlete? Tell me a little about that. I was a competitive gymnast as a kid, but in my more modern history I have been a runner and triathlete. That helps me as a massage therapist not only because it keeps me in shape for the physically demanding nature of the work, but it helps me relate to my clients, many of whom are competitive athletes themselves.
fully dressed, so it is a good option for someone who would like to experience bodywork but might be uncomfortable getting undressed for a traditional Swedish style massage. Sports massage is focused on maintaining the health and well-being of the athlete throughout different phases of training and competition. It requires a more complex understanding of anatomy, physiology and kinesiology.
Do your hands get tired? Haha! People ask that all the time, or comment on how strong my hands are. The truth is that the strength you feel is actually coming from my legs and core, my hands are simply the point of contact.
What are the greatest benefits of massage? Oh, there are so many, from pain relief and relaxation to stress reduction and decreased blood pressure, the list goes on. Personally I think one of the greatest benefits of massage is increased body awareness. People who get massages regularly are better able to catch and correct the little aches and pains before they become debilitating problems.
Meaghan, this has been great! Sounds to me like we can all benefit from getting massages, no matter our age or physical endeavors. And it sounds like, with your extensive training and work experiences, you would be the one to call in Reston! Thank you for talking with me today.
What is Thai Massage? Or Sports Massage? Thai Massage is an ancient form of bodywork that combines rhythmic compression with yoga-like stretches. It is done

A New Home for Brown’s Chapel constructed a Greek Revival-style church on the site, completing construction around 1879. This church was located in an area near the juncture of Route 7 and Baron Cameron Avenue. Over the 90 years, the church saw a lot of activity, including ice cream socials, family picnics and Christmas events. In 1967, the government wanted to expand Route 7 with extra lanes and the chapel sat on land needed for an eastbound lane.
As you drive along Reston’s Baron Cameron Avenue toward Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and look to your left, you’ll catch a glimpse of a white building nestled behind some trees. This building, Brown’s Chapel, serves as a community center for many people. But did you know when Brown’s Chapel was built, it didn’t sit in its current location across the road from Lake Anne? Around 1850, Methodist Episcopal minister Reverend Jesse Brown and his son Reverend Augustus Brown moved their families from New York to Virginia, seeking a milder climate. The Browns helped their new neighbors by passing on their knowledge of advanced farming techniques and formed a missionary church to serve local religious needs. Augustus Brown used a one-room schoolhouse on Springvale Road to hold services. Reverend Augustus Brown planned to build a better place of worship for his parishioners. In 1874, he and his wife Sarah deeded a half-acre of land to church trustees for the church’s construction. Augustus and his sons Joseph and Irving cleared the land and
Bayard Evans of the Fairfax Historical Landmarks Preservation Commission, Martha Pennino of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and Helen Dupre Bullock of the National Trust for Historic Preservation contacted Jane Wilhelm of Gulf Reston, Inc. for help. Wilhelm discussed the church’s preservation with Robert Ryan, Gulf Reston’s Board Chairman, who agreed to sponsor the move. Gulf Reston’s Resident Planner, Irving Wasserman, found a new site for the chapel off Baron Cameron Avenue. In May 1968, Gulf Reston and HEMCO Inc., working in conjunction with local police and utility companies, gently lifted the church with steel supports and hydraulic jacks and transported it at four miles an hour to its current location. Now managed by the Reston Association, this small country chapel still acts as a place for people to worship and marry. The chapel also hosts craft classes, sporting events and other fun activities for children and adults.
