FALL SEASON

in Reston

Fall is one of my four favorite seasons! I like them all… for different reasons, of course. For fall the reasons are clear. There is the feeling: fall is in the air. The air is getting cooler, for sure, but it’s difficult for me to describe that extra but unmistakable feeling that fall is here. The obvious changing of the color of the leaves signals the advent of fall. Thanks to Bob Simon and his vision for the community there are plenty of trees—an urban forest—to enjoy. The pace of change in the leaves turning color depends in part on the summer season: Did we get enough rain? How hot did it get? Climate scientists tell us that there are other environmental reasons for the differences in the color changes. Regardless of all those factors, the fall season never disappoints with its changing hues, tones and color. The deep reds, bright yellows and lush browns are difficult to match on an artist’s palette. Not only can we enjoy them on our streets and trails in Reston, but we are within hours of mountains including Skyline Drive where I worked in the summers and falls as a young person not as mindful of the incredible natural beauty we love in our region. The Shenandoah National Park even has a daily update predicting when the colors will reach their “peak” so that we can join in the traffic jam of the thousands who make their way to the area to enjoy the changing of the leaves. But the fall season is not simply about the changing rhythm of nature; it is also about the changing schedule of humans. The feeling of fall in the air brings back for me memories and expectations of being a student and a teacher as school gets underway. It’s about parents concerned about their little ones going off to school for the first time and about parents who are even more concerned when their children have gone off to college. I live close enough to South Lakes High School to hear the cheers from the football games, and I get to see children of all ages walking to school. As a politician I feel the anxiety and anticipation of another set of elections that occur every fall in Virginia. Fall may be my favorite season of the year in Reston, but then ask me again in a few months. I may have changed my mind. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

SUP!?!? My kids are ridiculously athletic. Me, not so much…. I’m the only member of the family who doesn’t own a bike. It’s better that way. Occasionally, I feel guilty about this parental shortcoming, which might explain why I suggested Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) as a family activity.

It sounded like a great idea until my 6 y.o. son woke up everyone at 6 a.m. on a Sunday yelling, “SUP!?!?” Images of me falling into the lake filled my head.

Despite my reservations, I drove our family to the lesson and listened intently when Steve Gurney of Surf Reston explained that kids get a kick out of seeing their parents fall into the water. I interrupted to ask when that happens. “It most often involves them trying to help one of their kids,” Steve said. During the 90-minute excursion, my motto became “Each person for herself.” The children had life vests. Steve hung back with my son. My husband stayed close to our 9 y.o. daughter. I practiced kneeling, standing, paddling and balancing enough to avoid a dip in Lake Anne. As I climbed off my SUP, I breathed a sigh of relief. Safely on land, I watched my son flailing in a shallow mix of water and mud near some cattails. Instead of playing the buffoon, I got to calmly wade in to extract him. Win-win. I have yet to fall off the SUP that we purchased through Surf Reston in early July. Furthermore, I now have countless photos of me looking graceful and athletic. That’s priceless! 1. DON'T GO OVER BUDGET. Get pre-approved early on in the process. Know the monthly payment your comfortable with and stay under it. 2. DON'T SKIP INSPECTIONS. Always allow time for due diligence. Instead of waiving inspections in a multiple offer situation, consider using 'For Informational Purposes only.' 3. DON'T NEGLECT TO GET IT IN WRITING. Make sure you know what conveys with the property. If there is any doubt, get it in writing. 4. DON'T GET TOO ATTACHED. It's okay to love your new home, but keep your emotions in check until negotiations are over. 5. DON'T FORGET YOUR LIFESTYLE. A Place Called Reston Growing up in Reston, I never thought much about the diverse architecture and amenities surrounding me. To me, it was just part of the scenery I knew. Now, as a Realtor and still living in Reston, I truly appreciate what makes Reston the community it is. Yes, it’s the people that make Reston special, but part of the uniqueness and what draws residents to Reston is its architecture. From traditional to contemporary, Reston has a style for every personality. Newport Shores, Mediterranean Villas, South Bay, Old Brookeville, Upper Lakes, Hickory Cluster, just to name a few. Understanding some of Reston’s history gives us insight into how some of Reston’s architectural style evolved. Reston was

founded in 1964 as a planned community by Robert E. Simon. It was one of the first modern planned communities in America. Conklin Rossant Architects served as master planners, incorporating higher density housing to conserve open space, as well as “mixed use” areas — a new idea at the time. The first section of the community developed was Lake Anne Plaza, designed by James Rossant to emulate the Italian coastal town of Portofino in Italy. Lake Anne Village was designed with modern architectural themes that extend to a nearby elementary school, a gasoline station, and two churches. It is home to Reston Art Gallery, Reston’s first condo highrise, Heron House, the Reston Historic Trust Museum, Washington Plaza Baptist Church, restaurants, shops and residential.

Hickory Cluster, just across North Shore Drive is one of the original developments centered around Lake Anne and is a key element of Robert Simon’s original historic Reston First Village. Designed by renowned architect, Charles M. Goodman, Hickory Cluster is an “International Style’ townhouse development representing an ideal application of contemporary townhouse design. Set in a natural setting integrating indoor and outdoor living, it offers striking architectural elements and treehouse views. A large community of artists, architects, designers and photographers enjoy calling Hickory Cluster home. So much of architecture has to do with how surrounding nature is used. Daniel U. Kiley, the nation’s foremost postwar American Modern Landscape Architect, was hired to help design landscape for the original Reston villages and clusters, including Hickory Cluster. Diverse architecture, natural amenities and spirit of community make for A Place Called Reston!

Eating with the Season! Now that I’m hooked on the tasty, fresh products at our summer farmers markets, what will I do and where will I go this winter? Yes, summer is the season of bounty, but rest assured you can eat fresh all year round! Though most local farmers’ markets close for the winter at the end of October,

we’re lucky here in Reston! Lake Anne Reston Farmers Market is extending their 2014 season, staying open into early December! Check their website and/ or Facebook for updates and schedule. www.restonfarmersmarket.com & www.facebook.com/groups/go.rfm Between now and closing, speak to the local producers at the market, specifically the meat producers, and inquire where they will continue to sell or drop-off products. Even though both Reston markets close, the Smart Market – Oakton remains open year round on Saturdays from 10 am – 2 pm. Keep up with them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/smartmarketsoakton. Weather impacts opening and closing times. Most of the producers you find on summer Wednesday afternoons in Reston are at the winter Oakton market located at 2854 Hunter Mill Road. There, you will find apples, pears, root vegetables, herbs, greens, dairy, eggs, chicken, pork, beef, prepared foods, canned items, etc. Prepare to be impressed with what you find!

Helpful sites for locally sourced products and resources during the winter: • Maple Avenue Market: www.mapleavenuemarket.com/index.html • The Organic Butcher – McLean: www.theorganicbutcherofmclean.com • Seasonal Produce Chart: www.vdacs.virginia.gov/vagrown/pdf/producechart.pdf • Virginia Grown Recipes: vdacs.state.va.us/vagrown/recipes.shtml • INOVA Buy Fresh, Buy Local: www.inova.org/inova-in-the-community/buy-fresh-buy-local

Additionally, Whole Foods and Mom’s Organic Market carry locally sourced items year round. More traditional grocery stores are stocking local too! The demand for local and fresh keeps growing and so does the availability.

Happy Eating…..happy endings!

A Conversation

w/ Victor R. Lopez, Owner and Director of Lopez Studios Inc. Performing Arts Preparatory School

Q

Hi Victor, Great to meet you! How long have you been operating Lopez Studios?

A

18 years

Give us a brief description of your school?

Sure, we are an Award Winning Performing Arts School for ages 4 - adult. We offer premium programs in acting, piano and voice. Our quality instruction, character education, attention to detail, and qualified staff has made us a trusted partner in providing arts related programs to Reston and surrounding communities.

What would you say is one of the school’s missions?

Our programs integrate four basic principles of development that capitalize on the skill-building qualities inherent to arts instruction. Through instruction at Lopez Studios, we help our students develop the facets of character, integrity, discipline and service through interactive instruction, practice, sharing, and performance. We encourage our students to be the best they can be while understanding that their talent is only a small part of their development.

What sets Lopez Studios Performing Arts School apart from others in the field? Character development is the foundation on which our business was built and remains the same today.

Why should someone interested in performing arts choose your school?

We are serious about the performing arts. It is more than a recreation for us. Lopez Studios is a place where students not only have fun but truly hone in on their skills and develop their talents helping them to grow as a person.

Tell us a little about your background.

I am a native of the Washington area. My musical study began in elementary school taking piano and voice lessons. During high school, I was involved in the Youth Ministry leading worship and founding a youth choir which sang and performed most all works composed and arranged by me. After having won many titles in County Wide, District, and State vocal and piano competitions, I continued my education at Oral Roberts University completing my BA Degree in Music Education with concentrations in both piano and vocal studies. In the early 1990’s while working in various churches, I founded Victor Lopez and Company, a traveling gospel group singing original contemporary and worship material that I composed. This experience led me to a successful teaching career which I did for many years. As the demand and popularity of my teaching style and philosophy grew by word of mouth, I opened the doors of Lopez Studios, Inc. Performing Arts School. Today, we have over 200 students participating in our programs. Our school has become one of the fastest growing performing arts schools in Northern Virginia!

What do you enjoy the most about owning your own business?

What keeps students coming back?

Being able to see your dream and vision come to life and be able to sustain that vision.

Do you offer any promotions?

How important is the support of your family when running your own business?

The quality of instruction and measurable skill growth

We offer talent and merit based scholarships as well as word of mouth promotions.

What about the school makes you the most proud?

To see the progression of our students not only in their talent but in their personal character. We are also proud of our many alumni who have moved on to greater things.

What motivated you to start this business?

Extremely important!!! They have been supportive and understanding during all of the company’s ups and downs and when I have had to work long hours.

Knowing what you know now, would you do it again? Absolutely

How long will you stay in this business? For as long as I can!

As a music teacher in a private school, parents were asking me to teach their children privately. It all began with one student and grew from there.

THAT’S INTERESTING! …about Reston The Home Life Of Dr. Max Wiehle It’s an often-told story in early Reston history. Dr. Carl Adolph Max Wiehle, a wealthy and German-born doctor from Philadelphia, bought over 3,200 acres of Northern Virginia land in 1886 to form Wiehle, a self-sufficient utopian community near the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad. Although Wiehle had some success in establishing his utopia, including a post office, several businesses, a town hall and a hotel, ultimately the town languished after Wiehle’s death from pneumonia in 1901.

Less is known, however, about Dr. Wiehle and his personal life. According to Bertie Poston, the last resident of Wiehle, Dr. Wiehle was a perfectionist, dedicated to supporting local education. He established a one-room schoolhouse and paid the teacher’s salary so that local children received a good education. Dr. Wiehle built a two-story summer home in Wiehle so that his family could enjoy the countryside. Their house featured six bedrooms and a wide front porch with trellises. Other features included a lakeside gazebo over a dairy, a peach orchard, stables, and a covered porch connecting the house with a kitchen, bathroom, pantry and servants’ quarters. Dr. Wiehle’s office was a short walk away, in a nearby warehouse. Though the Wiehle home is no longer there, the gazebo stands today next to a small lake with a fountain off the W&OD trail. In addition, there was a 30 x 30 foot icehouse, one of the area’s largest. The cutting of the ice from a local lake was a huge local event, and the Wiehles would travel out from D.C. to attend the ceremonies.

Traces of Wiehle still linger. The W&OD Railroad has become the W&OD Railroad State Park and the Wiehle town hall (later the Bowman Distillery) is still visible on Old Reston Avenue.
