Katherine High School Principal’s Update
Nanotechnology
It has been a busy term with many highlights. Thank you to all the staff and students for their contributions. Term 4 starts with our Stage 2 Trial Exams, so good luck to our Year 12s in their final weeks of School. I hope everyone enjoys their break and comes back fresh for what will be a very busy Term 4. Nathan Baunach Acting Principal
Term Three Reports
Teachers have been working hard to complete reports for their students. Student reports will include assessment items that have been submitted and marked up to and including Week 7. Students who are completing Stage 2 subjects, this will be the final report for these subjects for the year. Students in Year 7 and 9 and who completed NAPLAN earlier this year, their results have been released and will be included in the mail out. We thank all the teachers for their hard work. Kylie Murphy Specialist Teacher
Nanotechnology
A nanometre is a billionth of a metre (10-9m). Nanotechnology deals with particles of that magnitude. Paul Lyons from CSIRO visited the School to present a workshop on Nanotechnology on 21st September. Students and staff who participated in the event found it highly useful and interesting. There were two hands on sessions done with two selected classes from Year 9 and Year 10. Roy Joseph Science Senior

The Smart Handed Program
The Smart Handed Program is a new hands-on initiative offered to a number of Middle School boys as a means of increasing their understanding and enjoyment of Science as well as providing numeracy and literacy through real world applications. Community support in the form of expertise and advice has been gratefully provided by Katherine Watershed™ and Katherine Repco™. In addition, an enormous thankyou is given to the Katherine Emergency Services for giving permission for the program to access wrecked vehicles and for providing safety instruction and advice. Additional community members have offered to support the program next term. Please refer to the KHS website for the full article. Frank Holland Teacher
Rugby 7s
On Wednesday September 12, 9 students attended the NT Rugby 7 aside tournament at Marrara. Game One saw KHS take on Taminmin and run out victors 22-14 with 2 tries to Matt Govan and several try saving efforts in defence to Matt Travers. Game Two saw a 33-27 loss to Marrara Christian College. Daren Alimboyong scored 2 tries in the heart breaking loss. Game Three was the knock out Quarter Final against Casuarina Senior College. KHS led 19-7 at half time. Unfortunately the Katherine team added no further points in the second half losing 24-19. A great day had by all, and with a little training, this team could well come home with the silverware next year. Nathan Baunach

Last week 6 boys from the Tier 1 School Ready class travelled to Ngukurr for a night. Whilst at Ngukurr the boys participated in the program run by Ngukurr School about horses. The boys learnt to saddle a horse, brush a horse, wash a horse and many got to ride a horse for the first time. Overall a great trip which the students enjoyed.

Congratulations
NIDA Ethan Grahek, James Hewitt and Ian Arguilles are off to Sydney for an all-expenses paid course at NIDA during Week 10. These students won a national Cyberbullying competition with a video they made. Well done to these students. NIDA Denis Barritt, Ian Arguilles, James Hewitt, John Bolesworth and Owen Soundron have taken part in the National Computer Science School (NCSS) Challenge. This is a competition using the computer coding language of ‘Python’. Students are presented with various problems and have to write a program to provide a solution
SLC Handball
The SLC handball competition was a great success with many students participating and more wanting to so an extra day of competition was added. The final winner of the Tuesday competition was Luke Scattini who was given a run for his money by Year 7 students Scout Parker, William Ashley and Robert Henderson. Congratulations to everyone who participated. Sarah Earle SLC Coordinator
Enrichment Update
The Enrichment Faculty continues to work with students in a wide range of learning activities. Our performing arts students in Year 7 are currently preparing for a performance at the presentation night next term. Video students are filming peer interviews and these will be screened at our fortnightly Assembly. Technical Studies students are creating some interesting devices to clean BBQs. PE students are focusing on basketball and oztag with another class commencing golf in partnership with the Katherine Country Club. Art students have been creating some wonderful work using screen printing techniques. Ceramics students are currently discovering the whims of the potting wheel and enjoying every minute of it. Home Economics continues to influence our students’ attitudes to food and nutrition. Students have been using herbs and vegetables grown in the school garden which is satisfying for those students who study in both areas. The Stage 2 students are about to complete their final practical and we wish them every success. John Green Enrichment Faculty Senior

Katherine High School A Note From Middle Years
Middle Years students have worked hard this Term and I encourage families to look carefully at the Term 3 Progress Report. This Report should be seen as a snap-shot of your child’s progress, keeping in mind that much teaching will be happening in Term 4. Students in Years 7 and 9 also receive their 2012 NAPLAN results. Again, I encourage families to carefully read the results. Middle Years teachers will begin analysing the data next term in order to improve student outcomes. Parent Teacher Meetings will be Wednesday 24 October where families can discuss their children’s progress with teachers. John Sarev Middle Years Assistant Principal
NAPLAN Results
The NAPLAN results have been obtained from a limited testing situation and therefore provide a ‘snapshot’ of the child’s achievement. They do not replace the more extensive, informative and on-going classroom assessment made by class teachers. It is important to note that a different writing scale has been used to score the 2011-2012 persuasive writing. For this reason, a comparison cannot be made of the child’s writing performance with previous narrative writing assessments from 2008-2012. Examples of reports and a short two minute animated video on how to understand the student report are available on the ACARA website: www. nap.edu.au/Test_Results/Student_reports/index.html. John Sarev Middle Years Assistant Principal
Year 10 Rewards Lunch
To celebrate our Year 10 Students academic achieve from Semester 1, nine of our Students went down to the Katherine Country Club for a lunch in light of them achieving an ‘A’ grade. It was a great afternoon to sit down and have a lunch listening to their stories and what they wanted to achieve as they grow up. The most exciting things of the day though came from the jumping pillow which really had the Students on the edge of their seats to jump on. Well done to Dezlyn Coetzee, Bekky Millikan, Darcy Lye, Ian Arguilles, Denis Barritt, Aidan Carusi, Lauren Dawes, Tasha Dack, John Bolesworth, Chantelle Brennan, Eugene Ferreras, Clarissa McLennan, Asha Tonkin-Reeves and Georgia Walker. Sandy Creek Fishing Trip Words by Leith Waterbury Photos by Leith Waterbury
The Katherine Academy ventured out to Oenpelli with our Year 11 boys to experience the fishing of the Top End coast. We made the trek up the Kakadu Highway to meet up with Marius Clarke (Gunbualanya Academy) and some boys from West Arnhem College who were eager to show us their country at the tip of Cobourg Peninsula. Once we made it across the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land it was a short drive to Oenpelli to pick the boys from West Arnhem College and head straight out to the coast. Marius Clarke form Gunbualanya Academy took us to a camp spot that his family has been use for many generations. We all slept out under the stars with a great sea breeze all night. With boys all catching fish in the morning we had a big cook up of Barra and Mangrove Jack for lunch. A big thank you to Marius Clarke and the boys from West Arnhem College for a great trip all the boys had a ball.
