Le projet Grand Prix, entamé en 2018, incarne les grands thèmes explorés par le photographe montréalais Nicolas Ruel, à savoir, le temps et la vitesse, la technologie et l’urbanisme, l’art et l’architecture. Particulièrement fasciné par la chorégraphie mécanique exécutée à l’arrêt aux puits, où chaque millième de seconde compte, Ruel aborde ici le sport automobile avec la même rigueur, cherchant un équilibre fécond entre la technique, le sujet et le matériau. Ce premier corpus réunit ainsi les prises de vues réalisées au mythique circuit Gilles-Villeneuve à Montréal, à l’autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez à Mexico et au circuit Yas Marina à Abou Dabi, prémisse d’une série d’envergure qui évolue d’un circuit à l’autre, d’une image à l’autre. Nicolas Ruel est né à Montréal en 1973. Depuis 2006, il a parcouru soixante-dix villes disséminées dans quarante pays pour constituer un corpus duquel trois séries principales ont fait leur marque, nommément, Cityscape, Civilization et Industrial. Ces séries reconfigurent le tracé de villes emblématiques et rendent hommage aux splendeurs architecturales grâce à une technique de double exposition in camera. Les tirages grand format sur acier inoxydable mettent en valeur la monumentalité des sujets avivés par la surface métallique et les encres chatoyantes. Ses œuvres ont fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions individuelle et collective à Montréal, Toronto, New York, Paris, Tokyo, en plus d’intégrer plusieurs collections publique et privée, notamment Air Canada, Cirque du Soleil, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Museum Europäischer Kulturen, Microsoft, Power Corporation et The Rothschild Group. Il a également collaboré à des magazines internationaux tels que Vogue et National Geographic. Il est représenté au Canada par la Galerie de Bellefeuille.
Began in 2018, the Grand Prix project embodies the main themes explored by Montreal photographer Nicolas Ruel, namely, time and speed, technology and urbanism, art and architecture. Particularly fascinated by the mechanical choreography performed at the pit stop, where every thousandth of a second counts, Ruel approaches motor sport with the same rigor, seeking a fertile balance between technique, subject and material. This first body of works brings together the shots taken at the legendary circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, the autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City and the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi; the premise of a major series that evolves one circuit to another, from one image to another. Nicolas Ruel was born in Montreal in 1973. Since 2006, the photographer traveled seventy cities scattered across forty countries to produce his main series, Cityscape, Civilization and Industrial, featuring emblematic cities with a futuristic angle; a tribute to historial sites, architectural splendors and lifestyles of the earthlings of the 21st century. The artist has developed an in-camera double-exposure method to create unique visual signatures. The large-format stainless steel prints highlight the monumentality of his subjects, which bring the metallic surfaces to life with shimmering inks. His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Montreal, Toronto, New York, Paris, Tokyo. His photographs are part of numerous public and private collections, namely, Air Canada, Cirque du Soleil, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Museum Europäischer Kulturen, Power Corporation, Microsoft and The Rothschild Group. He has also collaborated to international magazines such as Vogue and National Geographic. He is represented in Canada by Galerie de Bellefeuille.
