Il existe parfois une raison derrière la nébulosité d’un problème. En appréhendant du même coup d’œil plusieurs œuvres d’Anne Karin Furunes – des images-installations à grande échelle, réalisées à partir de photographies d’archives transformées –, il en surgit un nuage de sens en fluctuation constante. Dans un premier temps, la compréhension de ces œuvres est indéfinie, pour ensuite se transformer en une lisibilité partagée. Furunes réalise chaque œuvre en étendant la toile par terre afin d’y effectuer des perforations à même sa surface, à l’aide d’un marteau et d’un poinçon. Ces agencements de petits trous créent des effets optiques et donnent à voir les histoires cachées, crapuleuses, mais si humaines, d’occupations, d’expulsions, de stérilisations et d’exterminations. Ses images entraînent vers la surface l’expérience générale de ces histoires, jusqu’alors submergée.

Tout comme le débat sur la représentation de la Shoah, ce que ce type de représentation a de problématique, c’est son incapacité à représenter de façon juste l’atrocité. Les photographies en elles-mêmes produisent un effet certain – elles nous bouleversent, nous parlent de vies ordinaires vécues dans des moments extraordinaires. Mais Furunes superpose un écran sur ces images, détourne notre regard et ébranle le sens que nous pensons en tirer.

La question demeure : comment conférer à ces éléments de notre imaginaire collectif et de notre histoire partagée une voix unie et signifiante? Ici, la voix ne livre pas forcément un témoignage précis; elle se raconte, s’adresse à l’autre. Lorsqu’une histoire individuelle est racontée de façon conventionnelle – aussi palpitante et réelle soit-elle –, la compréhension qui en résulte ne peut sortir du cadre du ressenti. La puissante potentialité virtuelle de ces images floues, qui s’adressent à nous tous, pourrait facilement se réduire à une expression concise et éloquente, mais ce serait au risque de tomber dans le populaire et le sentimental. Ce n’est pas dire que le populaire et le sentimental n’ont pas leur place, mais dans les œuvres de Furunes, il ne faudrait pas voir des sérénades d’une chorale d’Anne Frank, aussi imbues de franc-parler ou de poésie soient-elles. Dans ces images d’archives – militaires allemands, combattants de la liberté finnois, réfugiés et autres persécutés, des femmes surtout –, il y a une certaine retenue qui maintient sa vibration dans un espace partagé.

La puissance de ces images découle du flou, dans lequel on perçoit des avatars fragmentaires du passé, des intermédiaires en mouvement qui suivent Furunes dans sa fouille minutieuse des archives, et de contexte en contexte. L’utilisation de ces contextes – galeries, espaces publics, stations de métro, entrées d’usines, d’écoles ou de bureaux – donne lieu à ce que le théoricien Leevi Haapala appelle « un rétablissement des images au sein de la culture visuelle mondiale ». Le risque ici est que la culture visuelle en soit rabaissée. La question est alors de savoir quelles parties de ces images – qui, d’après Haapala, existent dans un « état tendu… en mouvement entre les catégories » – doivent être condensées, canalisées en une pluie de significations peu nuancée et torrentielle. Mieux vaut que les nuages demeurent des nuages. Pour Furunes, la solution est dans l’écran, une sorte de défiguration poétique et caressante.

Séparons ces deux actions – la défiguration et la mise en écran – afin de comprendre leur fonctionnement, en général, et en ce qui concerne l’œuvre de Furunes.

Pour Gilles Deleuze, la notion d’écran est capitale, puisque l’écran est ce qui permet de faire « quelque chose » du chaos. Aux fins de la discussion, appelons ce « quelque chose » le sens. L’une des significations antérieures du mot « archive » est celle d’un coffre, souvent dans une prison, où les documents publics sont entreposés. Anne-Karin Furunes ouvre les archives et libère ces images de leur prison, vers le chaos de la culture visuelle mondiale. Cependant, en les sortant des nuages, elle court le risque de les rendre populaires ou sentimentales – d’où l’importance de la mise en écran.

D’une certaine façon, il est illogique de parler de chaos, puisque, comme le croyait Deleuze, le chaos est inséparable de l’écran, en effet, il constitue son revers. Alors comment fonctionne l’écran pour Deleuze, et peut-être pour Furunes?

La mise en écran comprend trois mouvements. Dans un premier temps, un élément est étendu par-dessus plusieurs autres éléments, créant la possibilité d’une série illimitée. Furunes puise dans une vaste archive, et étend les éléments choisis sur les séries infinies que recèle la culture visuelle mondiale.

Le deuxième mouvement permet l’émergence des qualités innées des images. C’est ainsi que « la hauteur, la teinte, l’intensité, le timbre du son, une valeur, une saturation de couleur » peuvent dénoter un agencement précis : cette image-ci. Chez Furunes, les images sont maintenant en montage. Le troisième mouvement se produit quand « l’ambiance démonstrative » de la mise en forme de l’œuvre cède sa place à une ambiance personnelle ou individuelle, où l’assemblage objectif, le mariage entre artiste, pratique et matière devient subjectif. Dans cet ultime déplacement, l’œuvre acquiert un sens subjectif, à la fois pour l’artiste et le regardeur. L’œuvre devient « quelque chose », distincte du nuage chaotique, soigneusement filtrée pour en distiller un sens affectif et un pathos qui échappe cependant au sentimental.

Ces manœuvres de mise en écran deleuzienne ne se transposent pas sur le travail de Furunes de façon précise – ce qui serait anti-deleuzien –, mais jettent néanmoins un certain éclairage sur le cadre conceptuel de l’écran, tel qu’elle l’utilise dans sa pratique.

L’écran perforé est aussi une défiguration. Souvent, les monuments, les statues, les tableaux – ainsi que les probantes images d’archives – s’animent, deviennent présents et effectifs seulement quand ils sont défigurés. Dans l’enceinte des archives, ces photographies inaltérées demeurent entières, muettes, indéfectibles, impénétrablement masquées. Toutefois, quand on les passe par l’écran perforé (ou le masque défiguré?) leurs latents pouvoirs mystérieux se manifestent. Ce masquage secondaire, qui est autant restauration que défiguration, devient alors une mise en écran active. Comme pour Deleuze, l’écran est maintenant inséparable de la matière sombre qui constitue son revers : le masquage est l’image. Pour l’anthropologue Michael Taussig, dans son livre Defacement : Public Secrecy and the Labour of the Negative, cette mise en écran donne lieu à une situation où la face et l’arrière du masque sont inversés. Pour Taussig, la défiguration se manifeste souvent sous forme de déchirure, d’autant plus agissante, car partielle. Pour Furunes, la restauration et la mise en surface se font par un transpercement volontaire, mais partiel, de l’écran.

C’est par ces transformations – mise en écran, masquage, défiguration-restauration – que les histoires collectives et images muettes arrivent à faire sens. Le projet de Furunes n’est pas postcolonial, dans le sens de dévoiler et de raconter d’inédites microhistoires d’oppression. Son objectif est plutôt d’explorer les possibles que permet le travail de ces images, en examinant leur fragilité au sein des archives, puis leur vie agitée dans le nuage de la culture visuelle. C’est seulement à ce moment précis qu’elle peut les ramener sur terre ferme, avec respect et efficacité, sans sensationalisme ni sentimentalisme.

Sometimes issues are clouded for a reason. Anne-Karin Furunes’ large images/installations of transformed photographs from various archives, when taken collectively, produce a cloud of oscillating meaning. Later on a more common understanding of her work precipitates, but in the first instance things are kept quite general. For each new work, Furunes lays, or stretches the canvas on the floor and starts to perforate it by hand. Using the hammer and the punch-tool she is producing a variety of optical effects but also permeations in our understanding of occluded, often shameful but very human histories of occupations, deportations, sterilizations and exterminations. It is general, if submerged, knowledge that her selected images bring back to the surface.

The problem with this kind of knowledge is that, as has been debated in relation to representing the holocaust, there just doesn’t seem to be a direct representational imaging that can do justice to these horrors. The photographs on their own have a particular effect - poignant, they speak to us of ordinary lives in extraordinary times - but now Furunes screens them, removing their direct apprehension of our gaze and throws our understanding of them into disarray.

The question is: how might we give these figments of our collective imagination and history a unified, meaningful voice (voice in the sense of refrain, general address, rather than pointed testimony)? When their individual stories are voiced conventionally (fascinating and real though they are) they often produce only sentimental understanding. The irreducible, virtual potential of these hazy images, and their commonly felt address to all of us, might easily be reduced to popular and sentimental, though articulate, expression. All well and good in another context, but we should not, in the presence of Furunes’ work feel that we are being serenaded individually by a chorus of plain speaking, or even poetical, Anne Franks. There is a reserve in these archival images of German soldiers, Finnish freedom fighters, deportees and otherwise persecuted people, mainly women, that maintains their vibration in common space.

Some of the power of these images is that they remain hazy - partial avatars of the past, now mediated and circulating, following Furunes’ labours in the archives, in different contexts. These contexts (galleries but also the public spaces of metro stations, and the external or threshold spaces of factories, schools, and offices) has meant, as art theorist Leevi Haapala has written, “restoring the images to global visual culture.” The concern, however, with a lot of visual culture is that it doesn’t become cheapened, and so what part of these images (that are, as Haapala also states, in a “tensed state” and “on their way somewhere, between categories,”) should condense into a rain of meaning that might pour down on us giving us a none too subtle drenching? We like our clouds to remain clouds. The answer to this, for Furunes, is the screen, a kind of poetic and caressing defacement.

Lets separate these two actions - screening and defacing - and see how they might work generally and in relation to Furunes’ work.

For Philosopher Gilles Deleuze the concept of the screen is vitally important because it produces `something` out of chaos (we might call this something meaning for the sake of argument). AnneKarin Furunes has broken open the archive and liberated these images: they have gone from a state of incarceration (one of the original meanings of archive is a chest or box, often in a prison, that stored public records) into the chaos of global visual culture. However, in bringing them down from the clouds and working with them in an art context she runs the terrible risk that they will become popular or sentimental - hence the necessity of screening.

In some ways it makes no sense to speak of chaos here because, as Deleuze suggests, chaos is inseparable from the screen, merely its `bottom side`. How does the concept of the screen work for Deleuze and, perhaps, for Furunes?

There are three movements. First screening occurs when an element is stretched and extended over a trailing line of other elements, producing it an infinite series - this would be Furunes selecting from an archive that is vast in itself and tensing it in the potentially infinite series of global visual culture.

The screen then allows intrinsic properties to emerge and so “height, tint, intensity, timbre of a sound, a tint, a value, a saturation of color” begin to point to a specific unity - that one, that image. In Furunes’ case her images are now in a process of assembly. The third movement of screening is when the `demonstrative mood` of that one (the shaped form of the work) gives way to an individual or personal mood, when the more objective assemblage, or coming-together-as-event of artist/practice /material, becomes something subjective. In this final shift the work itself accrues more subjective meaning, for both artist and audience. Now it becomes `something`, distinct from the chaotic cloud; carefully screened into affective meaning, inducing a pathos that is not sentimental.

These screen manoeuvres of Deleuze cannot precisely map onto Furunes’ work - this would be quite un-Deleuzian - but I hope that they in some way illuminate the conceptual side to the screen in her practice.

The perforated screen is also a defacement. It is often the case that monuments, and this could also refer to evidential archival imagery, only become charged, alive, present and noticeable when they are defaced (think of statues or paintings that are vandalized). In their archives these, as yet untouched, photographs remain resolute, mute, unyielding, as if inscrutably masked. But when they are altered by the perforated screen (or defaced mask?) their latent powers of secrecy come to the fore. This secondary masking, an enfacement as much as a defacement, is now an active screening and, just as for Deleuze, the screen is inseparable from the apparently dark matter that is its underside: the masking is the image. For anthropologist Michael Taussig, in his book Defacement: Public Secrecy and the Labour of the Negative, this is a circulation of the back of the mask to the front. For him the defacement is often a tearing of the surface - all the more enacting when it is partial - and for Furunes the enfacement of the surface is the deliberate, but partial, puncturing of the screen.

It is only with these mutations - screening, masking and de/enfacing - that the generalized histories and mute images grace us with their significance. Furunes’ project is not a post-colonial one of uncovering or telling for the first time (micro) histories of the oppressed, instead it is much more about exploring how to work with these images, observing first their fragility in the archives and second their swirling lives in a cloud of visual culture. Only then can she respectfully and effectively bring them down to earth without sentiment or sensation.
