The coup of ’64 in Brazil did not introduce prejudice against the queer community, but during that period, the LGBTQ+ population was considered an enemy of the traditional family, morality and good behaviour. This documentary recounts the unprecedented stories of persecution and violence with which the Brazilian civilmilitary dictatorship acted against the LGBTQ+ population, and how this same group constituted its resistance, transforming itself into fundamental subjects of the re-democratization process.

Luis Carlos de Alencar is a director, screenwriter, researcher and partner of the production company Couro de Rato. He is known for documentaries that chronicle famous social movements and political processes, and the cross-section of the two. In his career of nearly two decades, he has won over 20 awards. He is known for films like Homem Invisíveis and Bombadeira. It’s Not the First Time We Fight for Love is his latest documentary.
