Garrett Spurgeon of Canton recently competed at one of the highest levels of competition in the shooting world for Team USA in the 51st World Rifle and Pistol Championships held in Granada,

Spain. The Championship event is held every four years. Over 2000 athletes from 94 countries competed in 15 Olmypics and 39 non-Olympic events, for twelve days with 64 Olympic quota spots up

for the taking. This was the opening of the qualifying path for the 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio. Spurgeon left from Morgantown, Va., on Sept. 10 and returned on Sept. 21. He previously qualified during two separate matches this year. Spurgeon was one of only two Jr. Rifle shooters that had qualified for all three events. The first event was the Jr. Men's 10m Air Rifle and Spurgeon finished with a score of 613.4, a few points shy of his average. The team finished 12th in the event. In the second prone event, Spurgeon was battling a case of food poisoning finished the prone event with a 611.7, which put Spurgeon

in 32nd place and the Jr. Team in fifth place. The third and final event was the Jr. Men's 0m 3-position event, which is considered Spurgeon's strongest event. Having the highest kneeling score of all the shooters with a 392 andranked one or two thru the prone portion (394), Spurgeon finished in 11th place after standing (379) and fell short of the finals by only two points. The USA Men's Jr. Team finished in sixth position. Spurgeon competed against some of the best shooters in the world, and he believes it was an honor to be included. The scores are determined by just fractions of inches. With time to reflect on his ac-

complishments, and his 11th place finish, Spurgeon will continue to work hard before the 2016 World event. His dedication, determination and strong work ethic will continue to be strong factors in his success. During the stay in Spain he was able to meet Vince Hancock, Gold Medal Olympian shotgun shooter and they became friends. Spurgeon returns to West Virginia University to help his Mountaineer teammates contend for their 17th NCAA Rifle Championship. The Mountaineers begin competiton on Oct. 12. Garrett graduated from Canton R-V High School. He is the son of Larry and Joann Spurgeon of Canton.

Missouri Child Identification Program The Monticello Masonic Lodge 58 AF&AM will host a free MoCHIP Child ID Program event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 11 at Highland Elementary School near Ewing. No one wants to think that the unimaginable could happen, but according to statistics, nearly 2,000 chidlren are reported missing or abducted each day in the United States. Gathering all

of the information law eforcement officials need after the fact can be a daunting task, especially under duress. Girls and boys ages 1121 are statistically most susceptible to become missing. The MoCHIP Child ID Program consists of five major components: digital photographs, digital fingerprints, vital child information and emergency contacts, a dental bite impression, and two laminated

identification cards. The photographs, fingerprints, and child data are burned onto a CD that is compatible with the Amber Alert system already in place. Previous to the day of the MoCHIP event, parents are urged to gather pertinent information about their child such as his or her doctor, dentist and emergency contact and phone numbers, allergies, medications, and parent’s work, cell

and assorted phone numbers. Information collection forms can be downloaded from the MoCHIP.org website and completed in advance of the event. Once the child is processed through the program, which generally takes only 10 minutes, the parent is armed with a single preprinted envelope that instructs authorities in the event of an emergency, something

a parent in crisis would undoubtedly have trouble with, and a proactive measure to combat the time sensitivity involved in recovery. Within a matter of minutes the MoCHIP CD can be loaded into a computer directly form a police officers automobile and entered into the Amber Alert system. The event is free of charge. For more information, visit MoCHIP.org.
