HIGHLAND KINDERGARTEN ROUND UP

Highland Elementary will be hosting it’s annual Kindergarten Round Up on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

This meeting is designed for and should be attended by any parent/guardian of a child, who is or will be, five years of age on or before July 31, 2015 and are planing for that child to attend Kindergarten at Highland Elementary beginning the Fall 2015.

During this meeting the HES staff will provide further information about this orientation process, as well as, answer many other related questions. Those who plan to attend please consider that this meeting is designed for adults and no childcare will be provided.

COUNTRY CORNER HOSTS CASEY BELL DAY

Casey Bell Day at the Country Corner Grocery in Lewistown will be held Feb. 28.

A percentage of sales will be donated to the Casey Bell fund to aid in her fight against colon cancer. Casey is a young wife and mother from Labelle, Mo. who is battling colon cancer.

Everyone is encouraged to come and shop for Casey.

A benefit for Casey Bell will be held March 21 at the Caldwell building in Canton.

(Photo by Rita Cox) The LaGrange Fire Department held their annual banquet on Feb. 21 at the firehouse. Current firefighters, auxiliary members, retired firemen and city council members attended. Several members of the fire department were recognized for their service.

Pictorial Cancellation Available in St. Patrick A pictorial cancellation will be available at the St. Patrick, Missouri USA Post Office March 1-30, 2015. The date changes daily. Two shamrocks with a scalloped border and the words “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Station, March ___, 2015, Saint Patrick, MO 63466” will be on the cancellation.

Stamped, self-addressed envelopes requesting the pictorial cancellation may be mailed to Postmaster, St. Patrick, Missouri 63466 USA. There is no charge for the cancellation.

Any day between March 1 and March 30 can be placed on the pictorial cancellation and the envelope will be mailed that day if the mailing date is specified. Customers who want the postmarked envelope returned under protected cover should include a large, stamped, selfaddressed envelope. Those wanting the shamrock cachet (designed by Father O’Duignan in 1936) on the envelope, mail to: Shrine of St. Patrick, Box 34, St. Patrick, Missouri 63466 USA and ask for the cachet. Shrine volunteers will hand stamp the green shamrock cachet on the envelope and mail the envelope on the requested mailing date.

The St. Patrick Post Office will be open on Sunday, March 15.

The Shrine of St. Patrick will sell a specially designed envelope with a greeting card inside. The commemorative envelope features a top hat setting upright with cascading

shamrocks spewing out of the hat. The greeting card has a photo of St. Patrick and an Old Irish Blessing. The envelope price includes the envelope, first class postage, pictorial cancellation, shamrock cachet, and a St. Patrick’s Day Greeting Card. Shrine volunteers will address the envelope, write the return address of the sender, sign the card for you and mail it on the day in March specified, if requested. The envelope can be mailed only on the day listed on the postmark unless it is mailed under separate cover. Make sure to specify postmark mailing date. Please make all checks and money orders payable to the Shrine of St. Patrick, as all proceeds go to the Shrine. Envelope orders may be mailed to: Shrine of St. Patrick, P. O. Box 34, St. Patrick, Missouri, 63466 USA. A different card, envelope and postmark are offered each year.

The five Shrine postcards may be addressed, stamped, postmarked and mailed for you by Shrine volunteers for 75 cents in 2015. An unstamped postcard sells for 40 cents in 2015.

A limited supply of previous March 17 postmarked envelopes are available. The 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1988 envelopes are sold out. These old envelopes must be mailed under separate cover so a large, stamped, self-addressed envelope should be included with the order.

The St. Patrick Novena will be

March 9 – 17. Novenas are prayerful nine-day preparations for an important feast day.

Shrine of St. Patrick parishioners will pray the novena at their homes and the novena will always be prayed when the faith community of the Shrine gathers for Mass, Word/Communion Services and parish meetings. Names to be included in the Novena will be placed on St. Patrick’s altar during the novena. The Novena names may be mailed to the Shrine address listed earlier.

Start March 15 at the Shrine of St. Patrick with coffee and donuts at 9 a.m. at the church hall.

Chinnis is charged with two Class A Felonies for distributing a controlled substance near a school.

He was being held on a $100,000 cash only bond.

ninth grade Student of Month at Canton High School for the month of February. Travis is the son of Travis and Kathy Gorrell. He is a seventh grade student who participates in in-door soccer. Travis has a 3.81 grade point average, and has received recognition as the Chart Teen Task Force Poster Contest Winner and the Student’s Choice for Scientific Thought at the 2015 Canton R-V Science Fair.

Travis plans to attend college after high school.

School for the month of February. Allison is the daughter of Richard and Luanne Pearl. She is a senior who is involved in Future Business Leaders of America, Soccer, Smokebusters, Student Council, Band, Science Olympiad, and Key Club. Allison is also the senior class secretary and the president of the Canton R-V chapter of National Honor Society.

Allison plans to attend the University of MissouriColumbia after graduation to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner.

Lewis County Memorial Auxiliary Unit 578 The Lewis County Memorial Auxiliary Unit 578 met February 9 in the Lewistown Legion Hall.

Following a 6:30 p.m. carry-in supper, the Post and Auxiliary held business meetings.

President Beverly Kern presided at the Auxiliary meeting. Gail Dietrich gave a report on the unit’s coupon project that began in March 2013. The 2014 totals were 55,129 coupons sent with a total savings of $84,601.13. Appreciation was given to all who clip

and collect coupons for the unit to send to servicemen and women and their families at designated military bases overseas. Some Auxiliary members and others in the community, including a church group, are involved in this project.

As part of the membership report, Linda Schmitz mentioned that most renewals have been paid for the 2015 membership year. Renewals and new membership applications are always welcome.

Goldie Smith and Linda Schmitz reported on the First District Auxiliary meeting Jan. 4 they attended in Palmyra. Linda had put together a Calendar of Events for January-August using information that had been learned at this meeting.

Following the American Legion and Auxiliary business meetings, a district oratorical contest and a meal were held. The next district meeting will be held April 12 in Callao, at 2 p.m.

Missouri Girls State

(MGS) will be held on June 21-27 at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. The Lewistown Unit 578 voted to sponsor Nicole Sparks as a delegate. The group also voted to list another student as an alternate if a nearby Auxiliary is not able to sponsor her. Unit 578 appreciates the cooperation of Sarah Adam, Highland High School Guidance Counselor.

There will be a briefing for MGS delegates on April 19 at the American Legion Hall in Palmyra, at 3 p.m.

St. Ann’s Annual Soup Supper St. Ann’s Annual Soup Supper will be held on Saturday Feb. 28 from 4-7 p.m., in Marquette Hall, 812 Lewis St. Canton, Mo. Delicious home-

Heindselman Reflections OATS Tax Credits

Russell Heindselman lives in LaGrange and is well known in the area for his knowledge of wildlife, farming and conservation measures. He shares the following.

I was born on a farm north of Monticello in 1928 during the depression years. We had a 26 Model T which was jacked up on blocks to keep the tires from rotting cause there was no money for gas to make it go.

Later on I migrated to LaGrange. To say I was still a farmer, I bought a Massey Model 50, plowed gardens and picked up the nite crawlers in LaGrange after the plow, money two ways.

Our great friends were Beulah and Phil Hackemack who lived west of LaGrange on Route where

P.J. Logsdon now lives. I plowed their garden each year. One time we were having a discussion about some trouble the First Baptist Church was experiencing, we all belonged to the church. Each one was leaning on a tire on each side of the tractor.

Beulah was a big lady, when she talked you could hear her from a good far away. She said to me, “Russ we can’t go on this way, all the troubles in the church.”

Phil said Russ I know the problem, Beulah said, oh shut up Phil, you don’t know nothing. I said to Phil what is the problem.

He said in the 1860s when they first built the original church, they got a bad load of lumber and the trouble is in the woodwork of the church. Beulah was a great cook and person and

when we had a reason for a dinner at the church, we all loved her cooking.

A dear couple that us ancient people remember.

For all my lifetime, I loved to hunt quail, the most beautiful bird in my opinion, a coat of many colors. For Sunday dinner a food fit for a king or queen. I would have made the quail a State Bird in 1927 when they made the bluebird the State Bird.

The quail, the multipurpose bird, everyone liked to hear their free music in the spring when the mail was looking for a mate.

If the quail could cry real tears as us humans can, they would of cried real tears when they saw the big bulldozer blade coming down the fence row or hallow they for centuries called home.

OATS, Inc. received an allocation of $15,000 in tax credits from the State of Missouri Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP). Through this program, eligible donors who make a contribution to OATS can receive 50 percent of their gift back in the form of a tax credit.

Donations made using the NAP tax credits will go toward the purchase of new buses in the community of the donor’s choice. Through the generosity of donors and the NAP tax credit program, OATS can maximize its fundraising efforts in the community. Those eligible for the tax credits include businesses, individuals who operate a sole propri-

etorship, operate a farm, have rental property or royalty income, as well as a shareholder in an Scorporation, a partner in a Partnership or a member of a Limited Liability Corporation.

“Businesses who donate through this program are able to keep their tax dollars in their own community,” said Dorothy Yeager, OATS Executive Director.

“These dollars allow us to continue providing transportation to get people to work, to the doctor, or to the store for their essential shopping and nutrition needs,” said Dorothy Yeager, OATS Executive Director.

March 12, 1920 Canton, Mo. March 8 – J. H. Wiss & Sons sold their elevator and interests in the grain business here to the Canton Co-operative Association Saturday the consideration being $30,000. Mr. Wiss has been in the grain business in Canton for practically 15 years and about a year ago the firm became Wiss & Sons.

The Missouri College of Agriculture is conducting a farm flock laying contest, and for the month of January, Mrs. W. F. Hamann of Canton won ninth place, with an average number of eggs per hen 10.7. She had a flock of 150 Buff Orphingtons.

Quite a little excitement was caused Saturday when it was discovered that the Baptist Church was on fire.

A fire had been started in the furnace to heat the church for the coming evening service. It is thought that the flue was burning out and a spark falling on the roof caught it on fire.

Several men rushed to the rescue and soon had it put out. It would be a very serious thing if a fire should get started here as we have no waterworks. We need some fire protection.

A number of the superintendents and principals of the high school of Lewis County met in Quincy Saturday and made plans for a series of high school contests to be held at Canton on April 16. This will be the first meet of its kind for this county. The program will consist of contests in stock judging, grain judging, athletic contests, and public speaking. Seven silver cups will be awarded the winning school. The contestants will receive medals and ribbons.

Mrs. Martha Brown of Canton died last week of

old age. She was 111 years old and was remarkably well up to within a few months of her death, being able to perform the duties about the home with ease. She was born in Kentucky in 1809. When very young she was sold up the river and brought to Lewis County Lorenzo Ford. A few years later she was sold to Steve Briscoe.

J. B. Weldon and family, who for some time have been residing in Columbia, have moved to Canton and will occupy the property purchased last week from W. E. Underbrink on White Street. The consideration was $5,500. Dr. Weldon is financial secretary of Culver-Stockton College and district superintendent of the 6th Missouri District.

BACKWARD GLANCES From the pages of early Lewis County newspapers 25 Years Ago The Press-News Journal March 8, 1990 A lawsuit has been filed against a LaGrange tavern by family of a man said to be drinking there before he died in a crash March 22, 1988. The suit, filed Feb. 21 in Lewis County Circuit Court at Canton against Junior and Susan Slaughter, proprietors of the Tap Room tavern alleges the Tap Room served Kenneth Eugene Allen intoxicating beverages between 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The suit alleges Allen was served intoxicating liquor “when he was obviously intoxicated”, and allowed to drive his pick-up truck to go home. The suit said Juanita Allen had previously requested the tavern to cease serving alcohol to Kenneth Allen.

45 Years Ago The Canton Press-News March 12, 1970 Preliminary plans for a Big Brother program in Lewis County were made March 5, at a meeting in Monticello during which officers of the organization were elected. Rev. Sam Nickols was elected president with Judge Henry Lloyd as vice president; Mrs. Cathy Hubbard is secretary with Dr. Lacy Leftwich, as treasurer. A board of directors includes Rev. Robert Morrison, Mrs. Rosemary Taylor and Trevor Pilcher of Canton; G. W. Baltzelle, LaBelle; Chester Drawe, LaGrange; Linton Jenkins, Monticello; Lyle Shutts and Michael O’Brian, Lewistown.

Perkins Benning, 71, died at his home near Canton, March 17.

Plans to extend natural gas service to Ewing this year have been announced by Great River Gas Co. Construction of a gas pipe line from a point near Lewistown to Ewing will begin following the obtaining of necessary regulatory approvals. An estimated 150 customers are expected to receive service. Ewing will be the 20th community in northeast Missouri to be served

by Great River.

George A. Seeber, 74, of Steffenville died March 10 in his home.

Jerl Bowman, 38, of Maywood died Wednesday at North Kansas City memorial Hospital in Kansas City.

Thomas Hall, 78, lifelong resident of LaBelle, died Feb. 27 in GrimSmith Hospital, Kirksville.

A bookkeeper and accountant, Mr. Hall spent the greater part of his life in LaBElle and surrounding area – except a few years when he worked in Kansas City. He retired in 1962, but accepted the appointment of City Clerk of LaBelle. He was serving in this capacity until the time of his terminal illness and death.

65 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal March 16, 1950 The name of Dr. John B. Alexander, dean of the faculty at Culver-Stockton College since 1947, appears in the new “Who’s Who in America” for 1950-51.

Mac Bevans, 38, died at his home in Canton March 11.

An aerial view of St. Patrick is featured. St. Patrick, while actually in Clark County, would of necessity have to be pictured along with Lewis County towns. It is well over 100 years old. Originally the name of the village was St. Maryville, but it created confusion as there was another town in the state carrying that name.

Miss Bessie Floy McClain, 72, of Lewistown passed away March 13.

At the 2nd annual Music Festival held at CulverStockton College, awards were made to these outstanding high school seniors: Emma Ruth Smith, Canton; Jean Gaus, LaGrange; Dean Phillips, Lewistown; and Jean Fountain, LaBelle.

85 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal March 13, 1930 The Missouri Gravel Company’s new plant on the state tract near LaGrange, which has been in the course of construction for the last several months, was put into operation Thursday. The first material excavated will be used for the Quincy Memorial Bridge.

Mrs. Martha Couch, 54, who was the widow of the late Addison Crouch, died at her home at Second and Clark Streets Tuesday.

She is survived by three daughters and four sons, including Mrs. William Cambridge and George Crouch of Canton.

A checker tournament was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. E. G> Bailey Tuesday evening of last week. There were players from Keokuk, Canton, LaGrange, and Emerson.

Canton players were C. S. Todd, Nat Henderson, James Carty and Dr. Bailey, says the Canton Record. Roy Sherwood of Keokuk was the star player of the evening as he never lost a game but did play three draw games. Sherwood played four games at one time and did not lose any of them.

S. Thomson, who died in the Community Hospital in Canton, was held in the Baptist Church in LaBelle Tuesday. Mr. Thompson was 7p years old and had been a life-long resident of Lewis County.

J. E. Ashmead, 65, of Carthage, who was injured in an automobile wreck near LaGrange early Monday, died at the Canton Community Hospital Tuesday at 2:15 a.m.

Harrison Wooders, 95, died March 4 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. L. Matthews, Des Moines.

He was a resident of Lewis County many years and he had a host of friends at Durham.

On March 4, 1930 at 2 a.m. the life of P. L. Witzel passed out, his spirit going home to the God who gave it. He was born near Basco, Ill., April 5, 1852. The Witzel family came from Marion County many years ago and have since been residents in Durham.

Mrs. J. C. Cason was notified of the death of Mrs. Gladys C. Hibbard, wife of Frederick C. Hibbard, which occurred in Chicago Monday.

105 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal March 11, 1910 Robert L. True sold the celebrated draft stallion, Arundle 28641, known in this section as “Old Jim,” at Johnson & Marks public sale in Canton last Saturday. Charles Batten of Canton being the purchaser.

From the number of divorce cases on the Canton Circuit Court docket, which will be found on page eight of today’s paper, it would seem Cupid’s darts were not hurled with force enough in the eastern part of the county.

The “honeymoon” is in total eclipse and the matrimonial boat that should have sailed smoothly and peacefully down the Stream of Time has been capsized and the occupants hurled into the great raging sea of unhappiness and distress, and as a last resort they have to call on our civil laws to rescue them ere they perish.

It has been another cold week and a lot of events to attend in the area. The Cattleman’s Banquet in Palmyra was well attended with a number of folks in our area enjoying the evening. The scholarships offered thru this banquet make it a very worthy event.

Bobby and Rachel Bringer went to Jefferson City, Mo on some snowy roads Saturday morning. Rachel was a Judge

for the State American Legion Speech contest.

They returned home and attended the Cattleman’s Banquet and the Nutrition dinner and auction in Hannibal.

Charilyn Stalder accompanied Bill, Brenda, Meg and Quinn Stalder to see her grandson, Jay Stalder, making his professional debut at the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. Jay is a second year acting major at Webster

University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts. The play is “The Winslow Boy� and he plays the starring role of Ronnie Winslow. They were there opening night and there will be a total of twenty-eight performances. Congratulations to Jay and I am sure we will be hearing more about his career. Jay was active in the Quincy Community Theatre in Quincy during High School.

I spoke with Buddy (Clyde) Renner this week.

I had reported he had a heart attack earlier and he is doing well after having some stints put in. The

Bill Renner family lived in Maywood a number of years and all of them were very musical. Bill and Norma Renner are deceased and Buddy had two brothers, Steve and Dale. Steve is seriously ill with MS and in a special home in Minnesota and Dale is in Kansas City.

Dale and his son still pursue Christian music together and perform as “ Brad and Dad�.

Marvin and Loretta Bringer attended the anniversary celebration for Kenny and Irene Meyers on Saturday evening at the Old Stone House Inn

in Palmyra. It was a great celebration and they had the best wishes of many friends and family in attendance.

The Maywood Cemetery Board met Sunday afternoon in preparation for the upcoming annual Maywood Cemetery Meeting on March 8 at South Union Baptist Church at 2 p.m. The current board is Loretta bringer, President, Danny Griesbaum, Treasurer, Darrell Eisenberg, Secretary, Angela Walbring, Jolene Briscoe and Jeff Reid.

I visited with Steve

Griesbaum, a former Maywood resident, and he is doing well after a serious illness. He lives in LaGrange now and has almost completed his current treatment plan. His brothers, Dan and David still reside in Maywood.

We had a strange bird at our feeder this week. It was gray and the size of a small hawk, had a head with no crown, or marking and was clinging to the outside of the bird feeder. The size drew my attention and it was not a pigeon. If you know what it was I would appreciate hearing from you.

I didn’t see the seven year old youngsters, Chevelle McCutchan was one of them, who performed at cheer camp at a basketball game in Canton on Tuesday night. It did remind me of some seventh grade Jr. High Cheerleaders at La Grange in 1950.

These were not the athletic one of today. In fact, sorry Barb, we were possibly the worst group ever. I do recall one cheer; Boom a lacka, Boom a lacka bow wow wow, Chicka lacka, chicka lacka, chow, chow, chow.

Wilma Weathers of La Grange passed away last week. Wilma was a fighter and walked many miles over coming one health issue. This time it was not to be. She remained positive and gave of her time to the Headstart program, her Church and family. I shall miss her and join others in extending our sympathy.

Curtis Farr was one of the five people featured in the Quincy paper Saturday giving his view to a number of questions. Should you ever have a question about his home town of La Grange, he is the one with the answer.

Even at my advanced age I added two more wrinkles to my grey matter. I had seen the sign on a farm between Hannibal and Palmyra about Polled Hereford. Now I know this means naturally hornless.

The second thing I learned was when you take a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise and scrape out the flavorful seeds they are called caviar. I thought caviar was only fish eggs. Now you know too.

Kim, Aren and Brock Schneider purchased fish from the Lions and took their meal and one for Bessie Stambaugh to her home on Friday evening.

This was a delicious meal with easy clean up and supported the Lions and gave their get together a party feeling.

Lent Services began Ash Wednesday at St. Peters Lutheran Church in La Grange. Services will be held every Wednesday at 11 am and 7 pm until Good Friday, April 5. Anyone is welcome to attend.

It is always nice to visit with our grown children

but was especially so for Larry and Joyce Solter when they received a telephone call from their son, Bruce Roy. Bruce Roy is in the Army and has been sent to Dkibouti, Africa.

They were very relieved to her his voice and he was doing fine.

Saturday Greg and Melinda Heindselman had lunch with his parents, Russell and Phyllis Heindselman. On Sunday Corey and son, Simon Fast were dinner guest of Phyllis and Russell. Simon, age two, entertained the group easily and Phyllis is amazed at how verbal he is. Made me wonder if he got some of this from his great grandfather, Russell.

Curtis Farr visited with Lola Brumbaugh in the nursing home last week and had a nice visit. He also visited with Steve and Jeannie Dean in Quincy.

He was one of the mourners at the funeral visitation for Regina Musholt and visited with her family.

Bert and Pat Cottrell attended the Firemen’s Banquet in La Grange on Saturday night. The meal was delicious followed by a program and award ceremony. Firemen, past and present, city council members and spouses and others were at the yearly event.

Edith Schmuck had another birthday dinner on Tuesday. Her long time friend Nancy Blum from Loraine met her in Quincy and they had a delicious lunch at Sprouts. She and Nancy became friends years ago when they joined the same church in Mendon and have remained close ever since. Edith still does not know her “watchful angel.�

Bruce Solter celebrated his 87th birthday Sunday.

As his birth occurred on February 22nd and was a home delivery the doctor insisted his parents name him George Washington.

As the doctor was so insistent they did this but also named him Bruce which they call the boy. This same doctor delivered a girl that day and insisted she be named Martha.

Joyce Solter prepared a dinner for Bruce which they took to his home and enjoyed that evening. Also present were his son Larry and granddaughter, Carrie Romero. Happy Birthday to a fine gentleman.

Together with their friends and family, Tyler Shirey and Kayla Estes are excited to announce their engagement. Kayla is the daughter of Stephen and Tanya Kirby of St. John, Kansas and David and Gay Estes of Arlington, Kansas.

She is the granddaughter

Tyler is the son of Kevin and Maria Shirey of Canton, Mo., and the grandson of Robert and Rita Kirchner and Alice Shirey, all of Canton, Mo., and the late Art Shirey.

Kayla is employed by Blessing Hospital, Quincy, Ill. Tyler is employed by Kempe Farms, Lewistown, Mo. The couple will be married March 28, 2015 at the Shrine of St. Patrick, St. Patrick, Mo and will reside in Lewistown, Mo.

Obituary

REGINA MUSHOLT Regina (Gina) Joleen Musholt, 59, of Quincy, Ill., formerly of LaGrange, Mo., died February 16, 2015 at her home.

Gina was born on March 30, 1955, a daughter to Norman Henry and Bettie Isabella (Smith) Daugherty. She graduated from Highland High School in 1973. She married Daniel (Dan) Dean Musholt on July 23, 1977 in the LaGrange Christian Church. Gina worked at Jo-Ann’s fabric and the Art Craft Company as a cartographer.

From 1978 to 1985 Gina was employed at Culver-Stockton College in the admissions office. She later worked as a paraprofessional in special education for the Quincy Public School District.

Gina enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren in a variety of their activities, She was a Cub Scout Den Leader and a Girl Scout Volunteer. Gina was very talented with craft and enjoyed sewing, making specialty birthday cakes, reading, and taking vacations to the beach. Gina also loved animals and had many beloved. pets throughout her lifetime.

Gina is survived by her husband Daniel Dean Musholt, two children, son Sterling Thomas Musholt and his wife, Heather Lynette, Quincy, IL.; daughter, Tiffany Danielle Musholt and boyfriend, Ward Jason Cole, Beavercreek, OH.; mother, Bettie Isabella Walker, LaGrange, MO.; two grandchildren, Carter Thomas Musholt and Regan Joseph Musholt, Quincy, IL.; two siblings, Harley Ray Daugherty and his wife, Katherine Louise; Dixie Elaine Kennedy and her husband, Ivan Eugene (Gene), all of LaGrange, MO.; brother-in-law Bernard Wayne Musholt and his wife, Maurice Bigger, of Sun City Center, FL.; sister-in-law Mary Marlene (Sissy) Shuman of Canton, Mo.; and sister-in-law Caroline Rene Gaus and her husband, Dwain Daggs, of Melissa, TX. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews; Harley William Daugherty and wife, Jessica; Rhonda Daugherty; Jesse Kennedy; Grant Kennedy; Jeff Shuman and wife, Sherry; Crystal Metz and husband, Walt; Angela Griesenauer; Mark Shuman, and wife, Sherry; Vicki Krueger and husband, Roger; Sherry Hallemeir and husband, Dan; Aron Gaus and wife, Jennifer; Tim Gaus and wife, Sherry; Nicole Bettinger and husband, Nick; Fletcher Shuman and wife, Michelle. She is also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Norman Henry Daugherty in 1974 and stepfather, Keith Lyndell Walker in 2010. Funeral services were held February 21, 2015 in the Duker & Haugh Funeral Home.

Interment will be in Quincy Memorial Park.

WILMA WEATHERS Wilma Louise Tate Weathers, 74, of La Grange, Mo., died February 20, 2015 in the Lewis County Nursing Home.

She had suffered a stroke in early December.

Wilma was born in LaGrange, Mo. on April 3, 1940. She was the youngest child of Helen Arletha and George Lee Tate and graduated from LaGrange High School in 1957. She married Donald Lee Weathers on December 21, 1957 at the parsonage in LaGrange.

Wilma was a lifelong member of Green Chapel Baptist Church where she served as the superintendent of the Sunday school for over twenty years. She also served as the president of the Pastor’s Aide, leader of the Girls Auxiliary youth group and a member of the choir.

Wilma was a supervisor at Harris Broadcast for twenty years and recently volunteered as a foster grandparent at the LaGrange Head Start and Highland Elementary School. She enjoyed puzzles, traveling to visit her kids and sports, especially Tiger Woods and Serena Williams.

Wilma is survived by her husband, Donald and three daughters: Donnetta Scribner (Kurt), Tonya Philpot (Kenneth) and Dorothea Henderson (Percy). She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Jordan and Jurnee Henderson, one step-granddaughter Domonique Philpot, and a great, great niece Marikia Abbey, four sistersin-law, three brothers-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Green Chapel Baptist Church in La Grange with Rev. John H. Mims officiating. Pallbearers will be: Cecil Weathers, Gary Weathers, Tommy Woodson, Charles Dade Jr., Wayne Lewis Jr. and Gary Tate Music will be provided by Pam Mims Visitation will be held Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in La Grange.

Burial will be in Marks Cemetery in La Grange.

The family suggests memorials be made to Green Chapel Baptist Church.

Obituary LEO E. OLSON

Obituary JOHN THOMAS BOLTZ John Thomas Boltz, 89 of San Marcos, Calif, and formerly Kahoka, Mo, died Feb. 8, 2015 in Oceanside, Calif.

"JT" was born Nov. 14, 1925 in La Grange, Missouri, the son of Cena and Oval Boltz. He moved to Keokuk at the age of 14. He graduated from Keokuk High School in 1945.

John served his country on the front lines in the Korean War and later joined the National Guard.

As a young adult, John hitchhiked to the west coast and arrived in California with just fourteen cents in his pocket. In 1954, he met and married, Tove Pedersen.

They lived in California for 30 years. John built a career in consumer products distribution working for Sterling Liquor, Max Factor and Jafra Cosmetics.

Not to be outdone by his mother Cena, a hometown bowling star herself, John loved and excelled at bowling, a passion he enjoyed weekly for decades.

In 1988 John retired and moved to Kahoka Missouri.

Joining the local Lions Club and American Legion in Missouri and California. He served as a Missouri “Elder Ombudsman” and participated in hearings supporting the rights and needs of the elderly in the State Legislature.

John is survived by daughters: Linda DuBois of Encinitas, CA, Georgia Worden of Sammamish, WA and Melissa Ontiveros of Carlsbad, CA, 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, siblings: Wayne Boltz, Robert Boltz and Carol Rose of Keokuk and Donna Clark of Montrose.

John is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Tove, daughter Teresa, grandson David, brother Roy, sister Louise and parents Cena and Oval Boltz.

Funeral services were held , February 21, 2015 . at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka with Rev. Rodney Underwood officiating.

Burial with full military honors were in the Day Cemetery at Winchester, MO. Memorials suggested to the Kahoka Lion’s Club.

Leo E. Olson, 77, of Kahoka, Mo., died February 20, 2015 at the Clark Co. Nursing Home surrounded by family and friends.

Leo was born March 13, 1937 in Kahoka, Mo., a son of Oscar and Media Shotten Olson.

He married Bettie Edmondson in 1958. She died September 13, 1995. On April 27, 2002 he married Mildred “Millie” Sherwood Cook.

Leo attended high school in Granger, Mo.. He was an excellent mechanic, especially when it came to Volkswagons. At his retirement, he was a twenty-year employee of Hollister Whitney Elevator Co. in Quincy.

Leo was a former member of the LaGrange Christian Church and attended the Peaksville Christian Church.

He enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets and was a huge Green Bay Packers Fan. He and Millie loved wintering in Texas and playing many hands of cards and other games with friends there. He also enjoyed the time he spent at the Clark Co. Nutrition Site visiting and playing cards with friends there also. His family was very important to him and time spent with them was very special.

Survivors are his wife, “Millie”, of the home; his children, Leo W. (Sheri) Olson of Maywood, Mo., and Debra (Mrs. Robert) Smith of LaGrange, MO; step-children: Odie (Cathy) Cook of Canton, Mo.,, Susan (Mrs. Tim) Roberts of Wayland, Mo., and Mike (Hila) Cook of Keokuk, Iowa; four grandchildren: Aaron Olson (Kalynne Mickan) of Maywood, Mo., Rachel Olson of Maywood, Mo., Julianne (Mrs. Ethan) Messer of LaGrange, Mo., and Catherine Smith of LaGrange, Mo.,; two greatgrandchildren, Joseph and Aleah Messer; seven stepgrandchildren;thirteen step great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law: Lorene Harris of Okqwaka, IL, Jane Cook of Macon, MO, Katherine Sherwood of Lewistown, MO and Gary Sherwood of Canton, Mo.; dear family friend, Vivian Perry, of Memphis, Mo.; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bettie; a step-son, Glenn Cook; three brothers, Richard, Donald and Stanley Olson and a sister, Betty Elder.

Visitation was held February 23, 2015 at Wilson Funeral Home in Kahoka followed by a Time of Remembrance and Sharing.

Farm Bureau Members Attend Leadership Conference

Lewis County Farm Bureau to Host Scholarship Contest The Lewis County Farm Bureau is again hosting their annual scholarship speech contest. The contest is open to all graduating seniors whose parents are current Lewis County Farm Bureau members.

This year’s topic is Future Generations in Agriculture: Opportunities or Obstacles. All eligible seniors are encouraged to contact their school counselor or the Lewis County Farm Bureau office for an application. The short speeches will be presented to a panel of three judges, and win-

ners will be announced at the contest. Applications are due by Wednesday, March 11.

Over $1800 in scholarship funds were awarded last year to graduating Lewis County seniors and Farm Bureau is looking forward to giving away at least that much in scholarship funds this year.

The public is invited to the speech contest, which will be held at the Monticello Methodist Church on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m.

Canton FFA Breakfast The Canton FFA had to postpone their annual pancake breakfast due to weather last weekend.

The new date is, Saturday February 28 at the CanFarm Bureau members from Lewis County attended the Missouri Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Leadership Conference. Attending from Lewis County included: Jonny Wood, Jennifer Wood, Billy Joe Rash, Lea Munzlinger, Matt Bozarth, Kaley Bozarth, Ethan Durst, and Lezlie Taylor

Farm Bureau members from Lewis County were among more than 500 young farmers attending the Missouri Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) Leadership Conference Feb. 6-8.

The conference, held at the Lake of the Ozark’s TanTar-A Resort, was a time to learn from experts in agriculture and swap stories of life on the farm with fellow farmers.

The conference is organized by Farm Bureau’s state Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee and is designed to appeal to a wide range of agricultural interests. Mini-seminars covered topics ranging from a market outlook and estate planning to home food canning and creating your own web blog. Speakers came from Missouri Farm Bureau, MFA, FCS, the University of Missouri

and other businesses.

Featured speakers included Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst, a farmer from Westboro, Missouri Director of Agriculture Richard Fordyce, who also has a row crop farm near Bethany, and comedian Damian Mason from Huntington, Indiana. The underlying theme among all of the speakers was to get involved in speaking up for agriculture so the next generation of farmers can be equally successful.

Young Farmers and Ranchers Committee Chair Jeremie Nothdurft of Cape Girardeau closed out the conference. He told the group if they as farmers and ranchers don’t speak up for themselves, then others who don’t share their interest will speak up for them.

“At first, I didn’t want

to be the chairman of this committee. My thought was like many farmers who just want to be left alone and take care of the farm. Like many young farmers, I work two jobs, off the farm and on the farm, trying to raise a family. Who the heck has time to do anything else?” said Nothdurft. “But, now I understand I would rather someone get their information about agriculture from someone involved in it than from someone that has no idea. Don’t miss an opportunity to tell others about agriculture and what you do.”

There were plenty of fun events as well. Both children and adults took part in a pedal tractor pull. A super farmer contest was a friendly competition pitting teams of young farmers against each other for the best times and most

points. Some of the events included a culvert course, tire roll and wheelbarrow race. Bingo and cards were part of the mix of meeting fellow farmers from other parts of the state.

The MFB YF&R Conference is hosted by a committee of up to 30 young farmers. More than 100 businesses and individuals sponsor the conference with Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Companies the presenting sponsor. National FFA Week February 21-28, 2015

Canton FFA Busy In Many Activities The Canton FFA chapter has been very busy. The Annual Alumni Auction was held in March where members of the community helped to bring many items to sell and came to bid on auction items. The Auction has been of great benefit for the chapter and the Alumni organization has been instrumental in helping the chapter achieve new heights.

On March 3 Arthur Campen competed for an Area Office. During the month of March students competed in various Missouri Agriculture Skills Knowledge Assessments with seven students achieving an Industry Recognized Certification.

Another highlight of the contest season Canton FFA was able to send their

first Nursery and Landscaping team to the State Contest. During April the Chapter elected new officers,attended State Convention and held their chapter banquet.

The 2014-2015 Chapter Officers arePresident- Arthur Campen;;Vice Presidents- Heather Stainbrook and Katie Elder; Secretary- Lane Kennedy; Treasurer- Emily Dochterman; Reporter- Taylor Hudnut; Sentinel- Jackson Barry In May FFA members helped at the Lewis County Farm Safety Day by giving a presentation on safe animal handling. Three Canton FFA trapshooting members also competed at the State Trap Shoot in Linn Creek Missouri.

The summer started off

with Missouri FFA Camp in June, members earned their state leadership medals and enjoyed lots of summer actives including water sports. The Canton FFA chapter assisted with the Palmyra John Deere Day of Play by helping to run a petting zoo station. The chapter officers traveled to Columbia Missouri to take part in a leadership training obstacle course and enjoyed planning the activities for the following year. Many of the chapter members exhibited livestock as well as indoor projects at the Lewis County Fair.

In August the school year rolled back around and students were back in class. The Canton FFA membership grew this year to 41 members. In

public at the breakfast Monsanto will help with signing up for the Chapter Challenge and Grow Education items Friday – Official Dress Day, FFA members read at the elementary and school wide FFA/Ag Knowledge contest.

September FFA members participated on the Canton FFA Trapshooting team. They competed at in 4 different locations during the season including: Boscos in Schuyler Co, 63 Gun Club in Macon, KaTonka in New London and at the Area III Trapshoot.

In October Canton FFA participated in Culver Stockton’s Homecoming Parade with a float pulled by Rick Hinton, President of the Canton FFA Alumni Association.

FFA members also came together in October to host Food for America, this is an event where the chapter members teach the elementary students about agriculture through a series of stations. Some of those stations includ-

ed a petting zoo, bugs, Missouri furs and trapping, and ice cream. The monthly chapter meeting also included a Hayride.

Through the last part of October to the beginning of November, four girls and four boys from the Canton FFA attended National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky.

In November members attended Area III Barnwarming in Kirksville, where students danced and had a chance to meet new people. Thanksgiving Dinner, FFA members along with their parents were invited to enjoy a Thanksgiving style meal and the Greenhand members were awarded their very own personal copy of the FFA Official Manual.

In December the Can-

ton FFA held a blood drive, the chapter met their goal of 30 blood donors. They also hosted a movie night in the Ag Room to celebrate the Christmas Season. In January 3 chapter members submitted their application for the Missouri State Degree and are awaiting to find out if they receive the award.

All throughout the busy FFA years members are also caring for livestock projects, working at local business, growing crops, mowing lawns and repairing machinery as part for their individualized Supervised Agricultural Experience. In addition to this members and officers attend monthly chapter meetings and are involved in community service projects.

Canton Celebrates FFA Week A variety of activities were scheduled at Canton to celebrate FFA Week.

On February 23, FFA member held Teacher Appreciation by providing a cake in the cafeteria.

FFA members wore Blue and Gold and had an FFA Meeting with an Open Gym. On Tuesday, FFA

members tried something new with Donuts for Doing Good. Members were asked to bring in canned food for a doughnut. Members wore camouflage to school and went to play Bingo at the Lewis County Nursing Home.

The group was to read to Elementary students

and Wear Official Dress on Wednesday.

On Thursday February 26 FFA members were totour Kinze Manufacturing and Wear Chapter Tshirts.

Truck and Tractor Day is held Feb. 27. FFA members wear Ag Equipment Apparel and the FFA Alumni Dinner is held.

Lewis County has always been rich in agriculture and the FFA Chapters ensure that future generations will have the opportunity and knowledge to continue the tradition.

National FFA Week February 21-28, 2015

Upcoming Canton FFA Alumni Auction

The FFA Alumni consignment auction will be held March 14.

The Canton FFA Alumni will be having their fourth annual farm consignment auction on Saturday, March 14, 2015 with Sullivan Auctioneers assisting with the sale. The Alumni uses the commission from the sale to put toward scholarships and

small projects for the Canton FFA members. It is also used to help with trips such as the National Convention.

The Alumni sell all types of farm equipment: tractors, livestock equipment, all vehicles, trucks, trailers, small farm items

(such as hay, straw, and posts). Most everything used on the farm may be consigned. Sellers receive the monies from the sale of their items, minus a commission fee. This is a good opportunity to sell items and at the same time help the future of agricul-

ture in the community.

It has also become a social event where friends and neighbors gather.

The Canton FFA members will have a food concession inside the Caldwell building. The homemade tenderloins are delicious.

FFA Alumni officers are Rick Hinton, President; Ed Sweet, Vice President; Connie Dochterman, treasurer; LeAnne Cary, secretary.

There are four meetings

a year. The next meeting is March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Caldwell building in Canton.

Lewis County Agricultural Fair

FFA members have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of farm life and agriculture. Many members are also members of the local 4-H clubs and dedicate many hours caring for their animals.

The Lewis County Agricultural Fair is held each year in July and many FFA and 4-H members participate by volunteering, showing animals, entering contests and attending. Pictured are two longtime fair volunteers and former FFA members Doug Wilson and Alva Farr.

National FFA Week February 21-28, 2015

The annual FFA Officer retreat gives chapter officers the opportunity to come together as a team to build trust and friendships. All members are given opportunities throughout the year to travel, build friendships and learn to work together as a team.

Lewis County C-1 FFA members find a variety of ways to serve the community. Holding pedal tractor pulls for children, serving meals for various organizations, decorating the nursing home, planting flowers and helping prepare for the fair are some of the many activities that members participate in each year.

Lewis County C-1 FFA members developed a raised be garden at HHS to encourage healthy eating and introduce gardening to students. The Seventh grade Exploring Ag Students maintained the garden in the fall and harvested over 80 pounds of tomatoes, 19 pounds of cucumber and 3 pounds of peppers that were served on the school salad bar and used in students homes.

Over 60 Lewis County C-1 FFA members and agriculture students welcomed National FFA Officer Mitch Baker in the fall. Mitch worked with the student to understand their potential and encouraged them to make the best of their FFA experiences.

Highland Basketball Highlights

The Highland Lady Cougars were to begin Class 3 District 7 action with a game against Centralia on Feb. 24. Highland was 12-11 going into post season play.

Canton Basketball Highlights

The Canton Lady Tigers post season play ended on Feb. 23 in the Class 2 District 5 tournament with a loss against Sturgeon 40-31. The Lady Tigers record was 1114.

The Canton Tigers began post season play in the Class 2 District 5 tournament winning against Paris 70-52.

Canton future cheerleaders performed at a home game. They performed cheers learned at cheer camp. The audience enjoyed the cute cheers and the youngsters had plenty of team spirit.

The Canton Tigers have provided much excitement and thrilling action this season. Gabe McKenzie became the all time career points scored by a Canton Tiger.

The dance team performed in front of a large crowd at Canton. The team is instructed
