A benefit to help Donnie “Duck” Martin will be held at the American Legion Hall in Palmyra, Mo., on September 20 beginning at 6 p.m. A meal of BBQ pork, cheesy potatoes, baked beans and dessert will be served and a live auction will be held.

Martin was recently in an accident and spent over 45 days in Blessing Hospital ICU and recovery. He is self employed and father of two sons, Cody age 18 and Dylan age 16. The dedication of a new memorial at the American Legion Hall in Lewistown took place during Lewistown Appreciation Day on Sept. 13.

Relay for Life Event held September 20 The annual Relay for Life event will be held Saturday, September 20 at Martin Park from noon to midnight. In case of rain the event will be moved to the Canton R-V big gym. Signs will be posted at the park to direct attendees to the gym.

Events begin at noon with the Official Relay Opening. Walkers will begin their laps around the track and games will be open.

Survivor registration begins at at 1 p.m. and is open until 5:45 p.m The Heartland Christian Academy Band is scheduled to perform at 2 p.m. Bingo and the corn hole tournament also begins at 2 p.m.

Morgan Jennings musical performance, along with Bingo will be at 3 p.m.

Lewis County IDA Director To Retire William B. Smith, Executive Director of the Industrial Development Authority, and the Lewis County Port Authority, has announced his retirement. The IDA and Port Authority Board of Directors met September 9 and accepted Smith's resignation.

Smith has served as the Executive Director of the Authority since February of 2007. He was appointed Director of the Port Authority in 2011, and he as

served in that capacity without compensation. Smith said, “I am pleased and honored to have served in this capacity. I have truly enjoyed working with the citizens of Lewis County to improve the economic climate.”

During his tenure with the IDA, Smith was instrumental in establishing a county-wide Enhanced Enterprise Zone, obtaining a two million dollar Community Development

Block Grant, and the expansion of Ursa Farmers Cooperative's grain elevator serving area farmers throughout Northeast Missouri. Smith further stated “I am very grateful to Sharon Lambert and Jim Upchurh of Canton for their expertise and assistance in these projects.”

Bill and his wife, Barb, plan to spend more time with family and friends. They are the parents of Shawna Davis and

husband C.J., of Logansport, Indiana, and Nathan Smith and wife, Amy, of O'Fallon, Mo., Smith said, “We have five grandchildren, Caden, Colin, Tracy, Carter and Kathleen, that we want to spoil at every opportunity.”

Board President, Steve Ayers, has appointed a search committee seeking a replacement for Smith who will continue to serve until his successor is appointed.

Relay for Life Elects Catron As Hero Of Hope Rita Cox Editor rita@lewispnj.com Allen Catron was an inspiration with a wonderful smile and a faith in the Lord that helped him through the tough times. His wife Debby said that although he lost his battle with cancer on July 5, he never doubted where he was going and that his faith made him strong.

Each year Relay for Life chooses someone that has fought cancer to be the Hero of Hope and Allen Catron was chosen for the 2014 honor. He was happy to be chosen as the Hero of Hope, in fact his wife Debby said that when he got too ill to work, he would go with her to mow and sit in the truck and pick out Bible scriptures that he was planning on using in his speech at the Relay for Life event. Although he will not be at the event, his spirit of loving God and having a positive attitude will.

Allen was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in November 2012, after having acid reflex for years. The one thing his wife Debby said he would tell someone is not to ignore symptoms, if you feel something isn’t right get it checked out and if you are not happy with the answer, talk with another doctor to get another opinion.

Debby Catron said when her husband got the bad news, he smiled and said, “Well I know where I’m going.”

Debby said that faith in God was never questioned and he was at peace knowing that heaven was near. He also put up a fight against the cancer, a fight that was helped by his positive attitude. As a family man he was more

worried about his wife and family than he was himself.

During his battle he was always a positive force.

The couple were greeters at the First Baptist Church in Ewing. Debby said she would never wish cancer on anyone, but the illness made them stronger and she said they became even closer than they were. His attitude will be with his family forever. He was brave, kind, happy and is in heaven.

Allen Victor Catron, was born September 7, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Henry Wesley and Vera Katherine Clark Catron. He married his wife, Debby, July 31, 1989. Also surviving are five children David Catron and wife Tracy, Lisa Catron Grimm, Steven Hughes,, Dennis Hughes and wife Amy, and Aleesha Catron Roach and husband Austin, ten grandchildren, one great granddaughter.

Allen graduated from Lewistown High School. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1965. Allen was employed for several years as a water plant operator and supervisor in Brunswick, Canton, Edina and LaBelle, MO. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church and a member of the LaBelle Masonic Lodge 222 A.F. & A.M. and the LaBelle Eastern Star 316. Allen enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, hunting and fishing.

His legacy of caring for his family and people is one of the reasons he was named Hero of Hope. Debby Catron wants everyone to remember Allen's kind spirit of never giving up, keep fighting and loving your family.

Allen touched many people. He was an inspiration by

the way he lived his life. The family hopes that telling his story will be an inspiration to others and encourage anyone to never ignore symptoms as one of the best fights against cancer is early detection.

Culver-Stockton Presents Concerts in the Plaza (submitted photo) Aaron was recently recognized at the St. Louis and Metro Fireman’s Ball. He received an award for his efforts at the April Lewis County school bus crash. He was one of five recipients that were from Missouri and Illinois. An article on the honor will appear in next week’s edition of the Press-News Journal.

Culver-Stockton College has partnered with Quincy Historic District to host Concerts in the Plaza, which began September 11. Performances will be held on Thursdays in Septem-

ber and October, with a performance by CulverStockton students on Sept. 25.

Other performers include Adam Yates and Rodney Hart (Sept. 18), Seth “Freight” Wade

(Oct. 2) and Steve Rees (Oct. 9).

Admission is free and the concerts are from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Plaza at First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust, 636 Hampshire, Quincy.

Lewis County School Board Director of Experiential Opposes Amendment 3 Learning Appointed The Lewis County C-1 Board of Education has passed a resolution to officially oppose Amendment 3 on the November ballot, which would take away local control of our schools.

Randy Sharpe of Lewis County C-1 (Highland) had this to say about the board’s resolution to oppose the amendment: “Amendment 3 will strip away local control of our schools, and we, as a

board, are fundamentally opposed to that. The fact is Amendment 3 would implement unfunded, statemandated standardized tests that could cost upwards of $1 billion. School districts and taxpayers would be forced to pay for these additional tests in a time when public education is already drastically underfunded.

Additionally, Amendment 3 would prevent

school boards from hiring, promoting, compensating or dismissing teachers in accordance with board policy.

Our board believes that this amendment will have many unintended consequences for our school district. We know our schools and our students best, and it’s important that our community maintain control of the schools in our district.”

Farm Bureau Meeting Held

Dr. Scott Giltner

Dr. Scott Giltner, associate professor of history, has been named the director of experiential learning at Culver-Stockton College. This quarter-time position was created to assist Dr. Dell Ann Janney, asso-

ciate dean of instruction, with the College’s experiential education initiative.

C-SC has made significant efforts to advance experiential learning over the past several years.

The 12-3 semester calendar, the Travel Study program, and the promotion of various other forms of experiential learning have all been essential to C-SC’s progress. The College is now implementing the creation of a new general education curriculum with required experiential courses, as well as the expansion of service learning and the establishment of a College-wide leadership program. Giltner as the director of experiential learning is coordinating and leading these new

initiatives and continuing to promote forms of experiential learning such as research, classroom simulations, and creative expression.

Giltner is an avid proponent and practitioner of experiential learning.

He assumes this director position in addition to his teaching and chairmanship duties in the Department of History.

The director of experiential learning reports to the associate dean of instruction, serves on the Think Tank, coordinates the “Conversations” series on teaching and learning, and works closely with the chair of the General Education Committee and the director of instructional technology and design.

BBQ Contest Results

Linda Schmitz, Lewis County Farm Bureau Promotion and Education Chairwoman, presents Lezlie Taylor, Canton R-V Ag teacher and FFA Advisor, a check from the Missouri Farm Bureau Mini Grant Program. The Mini Grant Program is designed to enhance student knowledge of the contributions made by agriculture.

The Lewis County Farm Bureau held their annual meeting on September 2.

Robert Deters was elected President and Michael Hicks was elected VicePresident. Jennifer Wood was re-elected as secretary, and Ron Krueger was reelected as Treasurer; also re-elected as board members were Michael Hicks, Jeff Lay, Matt Bozarth and Jennifer Wood.

The new University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist, Brenda Arnold, introduced herself and announced the Century Farm awards.

Recognized this year were the Collins Family and the Doerr Family.

Local and state candidates running for election in November were present and each gave a short introduction of themselves.

Lewis County Farm Bureau ended their year with 592 memberships which is a growth of 14 members.

Steve Roberts, district for NE Missouri Farm Bureau, credited continued growth to new agent Jeff Whiston, Brenda Boltz, CSR; and the Farm Bureau board.

Roberts also announced

that MFB is thankful that after a long fight, Amendment 1 passed, even with a small majority. The video “Ditch the Rule” was also shown at the meeting. The Environmental Protection Agency and the US Army Corps of Engineers have proposed a rule to expand their regulatory authority under the Clean Water Act over and including almost any ditch or low spot as “waters of the US.” Farm Bureau says this means they could regulate or prohibit land uses and farming practices and is opposed to this expansion.

Canton School Board The Canton F-V School board met on Sept. 8. The annual budget for 20142015 was distributed to board members.

The PBS Leadership Team (Elementary Principal Cindy Whiston, Erin Allison, Ashley Knapp, Julie Lubbert and Kara Ruffcorn) had a informational presentation to the board regarding plans and goals.

DESE will perform an Administrative Review (AR) of the district’s food service program on October 8-9. An AR is man-

dated for public schools and performed once every five years.

Secondary Principal, Jesse Uhlmeyer, discussed MAP results and the APR for the 2013-14 school year. Overall, the district showed improvement.

The APR was 93.3 percent.

Secondary Guidance Counselor, Kelli Oliver, was appointed ELL, ESL, and Homeless Child Coordinator for the 20142015 school year.

The second reading of the (MCE) policy and regulation updates oc-

curred.

The Board re-adopted the Assurance of Religious Expression Policy (Form 1110) Ms. Lezlie Taylor, FFA Advisor, requested approval to take students to the National FFA Convention in Louisville Kentucky on October 29- November 1. The board unanimously approved the request.

In executive session, student welfare was discussed.

The October Board meeting will be Monday, October 13, 2014.

Traffic Engineering Assistance Missouri Heart Gallery to show Program Funding Available display at Hannibal Arts Council

The Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking projects that could be funded with Traffic Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) funds.

The Traffic Engineering Assistance Program provides federal and state funds through a competitive selection process to local public agencies for traffic engineering related projects, including, but not limited to: Corridor safety and/or operational analysis; Intersection(s)

safety and/or operational analysis; Speed limit review; Sign inventory; Pedestrian/bike route analysis; Parking issues and Other traffic studies Local public agencies are reimbursed for eligible project costs at a rate of 80 percent with the local agency providing a 20-percent match. Funds administered by MoDOT will provide 80 percent of the TEAP project costs, up to $8,000 per project. If the total cost is greater than

$10,000, the local agency can pay more than 20 percent to complete the TEAP project, if desired.

Eligible projects must be able to be completed by fall of 2015. Applications are due November 15, 2014, with selected projects to be announced in January 2015.

Tenth Circuit Presiding Judge Rachel Bringer Shepherd has announced the Missouri Heart Gallery will be on display at the Hannibal Arts Council, 105 South Main St., Hannibal, Mo., on September 22, 24, 25, and 26, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Missouri Heart Gallery is a joint effort between the Missouri Department of Social Services and the Adoption Exchange of Missouri to raise awareness about children in need of foster and adoptive families in Missouri. The display contains pictures and information about many of the 1,400 children eligible for adoption in Missouri. Currently, the Tenth Judicial Circuit, which consists of

Marion, Monroe, and Ralls Counties, has more than 170 children in foster care, and more than 12,000 children are in foster care within the state. The Tenth Circuit has a great need for additional foster families.

Judge Shepherd said, “I greatly appreciate the opportunity to have the Heart Gallery display in Northeast Missouri to increase the awareness of the need for additional foster and adoptive families.”

Fleer Feeds Celebrate 60 Years of Business

Howard Fleer was born June 10, 1928. He passed away Oct. 25, 2003. He was a strong supporter of the Lewistown community and enjoyed visiting with all his customers and friends.

In his honor, the Fleer family had a brick archway entry erected at the corner of the beautiful park he enjoyed so much.

community members to tour the new addition. The annual customer appreciation day was held at all three of the bank’s facilities in Lewistown, Ewing and Edina. Each fall the bank serves lunch to community members.

Lorenzo Gnuse grew up on the family farm two miles west of LaGrange. After graduation from LaGrange College, he began work at the bank and continued to help in his spare time on the family farm with his father and younger brothers.

Lorenzo Gnuse was called to the Army in 1917 during World War I. When his father died in 1922, Lorenzo as the oldest son, felt an obligation to return to the family farm

Eventually, Lorenzo returned to the banking business and was commissioned to assist in the liquidation of banks throughtout Missouri that were failing due to the depression. Mr. Gnuse was sent to Durham to liquidate the Durham Savings Bank.

The citizens of the community desired a new bank

and Mr. Gnuse agreed to organize a new bank.

Citizens of Lewistown approached Mr. Gnuse to charter a new bank. Two banks in Lewistown had failed. Mr. Gnuse with his wife, Ida, and brother Solomon Gnuse, established the Lewistown State Bank in 1928. The Lewistown Bank and the Durham bank both stayed open during the depression. The two banks merged in 1936.

After opening a branch in

Ewing in 1973 and in Edina in 1991, the name was changed to United State Bank.

Chuck Gnuse expressed his appreciation for the award and also expressed his appreciation to all the customers of the bank and all the members of the community who support the local businesses.

On September 18 the Air Force was established in 1947. My husband, Deane, was an enlisted member in 1954. Deane passed away in 2010.

Stan and Charlotte Miner visited her brother, Steve McDowell at his New London home on Wednesday. They then went out for supper with Stan’s uncle, Fred and Maxine Tarpin.

Alice Solter stated she has a social life this week because of her house guests daughter Lee Ann and Mario Arrambide from Buffalo, New York.

Friday dinner guests were Riff and Susan Scholz of Quincy. On Sunday Alice, Lee Ann and Mario were guests of Riff and Susan Scholz.

Jimmy Wolfmeyer was pleasantly surprised when he arrived at the home of Larry and Maxine Wolfmeyer on Sunday evening.

His Wolfmeyer relatives were there to wish him a Happy Birthday. Present were Anita Wolfmeyer, Randy, Gretchen, Thalia and Conall Wolfmeyer, Jeff and Heather Wolfmeyer of Quincy, Philip and Ann Wolfmeyer of Spring Hill, Kansas and Jessica and Bella Hagen from Fort Benning, Ga. Gloria Meyer has her best friend and classmate from the Philippines, Julie Koch as a house guest.

Julie graduated nursing with Gloria and arrived here from Germany. They plan to sit by the fire, enjoy some fine wine and go boating on the Mississippi.

Besides reminiscing they plan to do some sight seeing in Hannibal and Nauvoo.

Although the September temperature was a mere 52 degrees Thursday morning it did not keep Ray Job, Charlotte Miner and Myrna Hoteling from driving to Keokuk to take their cousin Norma Jean Clay to lunch at the Hawkeye. Lots of visiting left a warm feeling in our hearts.

Stan and Charlotte Miner visited her sister, Marsha and Nick White while in Bettendorf, Iowa, on Monday. Saturday evening they met Janet Gaus and attended the Ridge Runner Jamboree in Ewing. The huge S.E. Iowa Pigeon Flea Market in West Burlington was their destination on Sunday. Later they enjoyed a tour of the Big River Resource plant, the biggest grain bin in Iowa where nephew Jordan McDowell has been a lab tech for a year.

Mark Murphy from Kasson, MN brought his mother, Jenny Reid home from Mayos where she had been a patient. Many callers welcomed her during the week several she worked with at the bank

It has been a week of rain and high water in our area. We had over seven inches of rain and many had more than that.

Grassy and North River were out of their banks. It is sad to see the beautiful crops standing in water.

Hopefully the weather will be better this week!

South Union Baptist Church is looking forward to the “Fall Roundup” planned for October 5 after the worship service.

The service, lunch, fellowship and entertainment will be a day you won’t want to miss.

It was a night of celebration at the home of Craig and Nikki Brinkman on Saturday. It was their daughter’s birthday.

Emma was three years old and a lovely little girl.

Family and friends joined in the birthday fun with food and gifts.

Loretta Bringer and Rachel Bringer Shepherd attended the Foundations of Freedom and Faith lun-

cheon in the home of Dr. and Mrs. Anthony Allen on Monday. Dr.Dorothy Patterson brought the inspiring message. Dr. Patterson is the wife of Dr. Paige Patterson, the President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and she is the Professor of Theology in Women’s Studies at Southwestern.

Friday, Jack Fountain and Kevin Kelly went to Kirksville to work with the Mo Baptist Chainsaw Unit. Due to storms last week several places around there had trees blown down. Also helping from around our area were Jill Feldcamp and Aaron Moore, former Pastor Tim Smith and his wife, Lori, who came from Eldon, Mo to help. They brought a man from their church who was newly trained.to help too. I also saw Bethel Baptist Association helping with clean-up in the Palmyra area on Highway 168.

Larry and Dorothy Gillespie, Pam Stewart and Dorothy Logsdon attended the Agatha Christie play “And Then There Were None” at the Quincy Community Theater Saturday evening. They all enjoyed the exciting mystery. Courtney Stewart played Vera Claythorne in this production.

Phyllis Heindselman enjoyed lunch on Tuesday with Elaine Jamison, Tudie Stahl and Georgia Richter.

On Wednesday she joined members of the Symphony and Saturday she had breakfast with brother Matt and Ann Keller. She and Russell joined others at the new home of Zach Heindselman to celebrate Zach on his birthday. Zach fried fish for his guests. On Sunday Phyllis and her sister Mary Lou Reinebagh attended the performance of Courtney Stewart..

She also enjoyed a grilling done by Mike and Joni Sliger for the church group.

A card shower is being requested for longtime LaGrange resident, Viola Tracy who will be 95 years old on September 22.

Cards may be sent to Viola Tracy, care of the Lewis County Nursing Home, Box 266, 17528 Hwy. 81, Canton, Mo. 63435. Mrs. Tracy is now living at the Lewis County Nursing Home and taught piano lessons for years and still enjoys playing for the other residents.

Shepherd attended the Presiding Judges Missouri Conference in Kansas City this week and attended a meeting of the Children’s Justice Task Force in Jefferson City on Friday. Judge Shepherd has been serving as a member of this task force.for some time now.

She stopped in Columbia on Friday evening for dinner with Dalton Shepherd.

Saturday, Jack and Pete Fountain went to Palmyra to take their granddaughter and daughter in law, Sydney, and Tracy Fountain, out for Sydney’s birthday supper.

They also brought some birthday cupcakes for her. They enjoyed a quick visit with Tristan Fountain who was home from college for the weekend.

Rachel Shepherd attended the 100 year anniversary of Olivet Christian Church in Center, Mo.on Sunday afternoon.The church was established in 1830 and the pastor is Bro. Drew Sutor of Palmyra.

Little Miss is Jessica Fountain, age four. She is the daughter of Robin and Bill Fountain. Deb O’Brien and Brandi Frederick, Lewis County REC employees, emceed the event.

40, O.E.S., had a surprise visit from the Worthy Grand Matron elect, Sister Cinda Reeder and her husband Brother Mike at their regular meeting Thursday evening. It was revealed that Brother Shawn McAfee had been appointed as Grand Sentinel of the Grand Chapter of Missouri and that Sister Gloria Macomber was appointed as District Deputy Grand Matron of the Third District for the upcoming year. Both will be installed in the Grand Chapter session in Columbia in October. In other business balloting was conducted on two candidates and three new petitions were received. New officers elected were Delma Smith and Joe Humes in the East; Paula and Kevin Fox in the West; Betty Stutz and Kathy Frazier will remain as secretary and treasurer, Esther Justice and Kathy Blythe will be Conductree and Associate Conductress. All other officers will be appointed by the Worthy Matron.

We are saddened by the death of John Eldon VanMeter and extend sympathy to his family. He was

a 1947 graduate of Lewistown High School and was a successful farmer.

Lewistown Appreciation Day was well attended in a sunny and cool atmosphere. Judy Davis and Erma Dee Jones went for the parade and afternoon activities. Erma Dee was so pleased to meet and greet her square dance friends who put on a demonstration. Her dancing stopped with the broken hip five years ago but still has a heart for the dance.

Judy and Erma Dee also attended Maywood Church Sunday morning.

Highway 16 resurfacing has been completed in fine shape with bright lines and rumble strips and added width to the shoulders.

Another improvement to our county.

Denise Goodwin was one of the large group of member who attended the We Moderns Club meeting Monday night at the home of Jan Sellers. Wednesday and Thursday she and other Democratic candidates were waitresses at Stanley’s Diner in Lewistown.

They worked for tips and donated them to Hadley’s Hope, a charitable need in Canton which provides

book bags and weekend meals for children of Canton R-V and Lewis County C-1 School districts.

Friday Denise Goodwin, Donnette Carter and Jen Wood attended the appreciation day at US Bank in Lewistown and later David and Denise attended the 60th anniversary days at Fleer’s Feed. Saturday they participated in the Lewistown parade. Denise also helped in the We Moderns stand serving tacos and in the 5-K walk for cancer for Tina Lay’s team and helped the Methodist Church members as they took a turn at serving the evening meal. Others who helped were First Baptist and Freedom for Christ.

Several other local candidates also attended the event USB bank and Fleer’s and also participated in the parade and other activities the following day in Lewistown, including bingo, car show and where ever help was needed.

The candidates have done a great job volunteering and participating in local events.

Remember Saturday is Relay for Life event at Martin Park in Canton, please support Lewistown’s Tina Lay’s team and all the other teams and survivors.

Thought for the Day: God is looking for people to use, and if you can get yourself usable, He will wear you out.

Lexi Lu’s Opens in Lewistown

Grimwood Celebrate 40 Years of Marriage

A new flower shop has recently opened in Lewistown in the front suite of Country Corner Grocery Store. Robyn Stark believes it is a good fit for the community and compliments the existing grocery business that she and Brad Stice own and operate.

Stark said the empty space had been used for storage but they recently redecorated to turn it into a beautiful floral and gift shop.

Lexi Lu’s offers fresh and silk floral arrangements that are perfect for special occasions. They can provide florals for weddings, funerals, birthdays, anniversaries or any occasion.

The shop also offers gifts, balloons, candles, wreaths, etc. Stark said they will soon offer more inventory such as jewelry, memorial statues and plaques and other gifts. Live plants are also offered and displayed in the shop.

Stark said they felt

that Lewistown needed something where community members could purchase a gift or flowers without having to go out of town. Delivery is available and seasonal florals and gifts will be offered.

The shop is able to send flowers anywhere in the world.

Along with Robyn Stark, Wendy Geisendorfer is also helping the shop and Meggan Herr is the manager in the grocery store. Stark hopes the

community will welcome the new addition to Lewistown and is very grateful for the support the Country Corner Grocery store has had since opening a few years ago. She invites everyone to stop in and see what the shop has to offer.

Daugherty is Central Eagle Band Member Chanel Daugherty is a member of the Sound of Central Marching Eagle Band. The band is a performance ensemble in the Swinney Conservatory of Music at Central Methodist University.

The Marching Band

performs at home football games and also presents an exhibition at the Central Methodist University annual Marching Festival, Band Day which will be held on October 11. The first home game was September 13.

Daugherty is a Senior Music Education major from Bethel.

The Grimwood’s currently operate Smurfwood Trails ATV Park and are members of Queen of Peace Church in Ewing.

They enjoy visiting with family and traveling, especially during the winter months. They will celebrate their 40th anniversary with a trip to Australia.

Mrs. Grimwood is the daughter of the late Charles and Henrietta Schaefer of Wellsville, Mo. Mr. Grimwood is the son of the late Ted Grimwood of Monticello and the late Betty Grimwood of Canton (formerly of Montgomery City, Mo).

They are the parents of Lisa and her husband, Kevin Novinger, of Quincy, Ill. and Cheryl and her husband, Adam Hinrichs, of Imperial, Mo. They have two grandchildren, Owen and Ellie Novinger.

Ruth is a retired elementary teacher, serving 31 years. She taught first and second grades and was the elementary librar-

Clayton LaCount sold over $11,000 of popcorn during the 2013 popcorn sales period. With that amount he was able to donate $750 to the Great Rivers Honor Flight, which sponsored two veterans. The bike Clay uses to ride around town was built by his grandfather, Ron LaCount, a Vietnam War veteran, and his father Joe LaCount. Clay is planning again to donate to the Great Rivers Honor Flight with the 2014 popcorn sales in honor of family members that have served. He appreciates all those that purchase popcorn and support him in his goals.

LaBelle CWF The La Belle Community CWF met at the La Belle Fire House Sept. 6, 2014, with the following present: Judy Pitford and granddaughter, Georgia Arndt, Lois Parrish, Sue Sharpe, Lucille Noble, Margaret Miller and Ida Byers.

Judy opened with prayer. Lucille passed around a small yarn and plastic cross with an attached note about the cross and what it means to us, made and passed out to people on the streets of Palmyra on “wear a cross

day” in July by Josephine Waller and her daughter, Joyce.

Judy offered a ticket to a Joyce Myers concert in St.Louis the last weekend in Sept. as she is unable to attend. Judy also read John 15:5, Ephesians 6:10 and Genesis 1:26-27 and Ida read Ecclesiastes 3:22. This was followed by much discussion.

The prayer list was updated and cards signed to be mailed to those on the list. Meeting was dismissed by repeating the Lord’s Prayer.

FOR THE RECORD Obituary TERRY TYRONE TOOMEY Mr. Terry Tyrone Toomey, 74, of Maywood, Mo., died September 8, 2014 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill. Terry was born December 22, 1939 in Quincy, Ill., a son of Terrance Arnold and Rosemary Krogman Toomey. He married Carol Standbridge in Quincy, Ill. She survives.

A graduate from Quincy High School, Terry enlisted in the Marine Corp on June 20, 1957 receiving an honorable discharge on June 19, 1960 with the rank of corporal. He was recognized as a marksman and a Teletype

Obituary JOHN ELDON VAN METER John Eldon Van Meter, 85 of Lewistown, Missouri died September 14, 2014 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

The son of John P. and Emma L. Ragan Van Meter was born on August 29, 1929 in rural Lewis County, Missouri.

He was united in marriage to Margie Adkins on September 2, 1950 in the First Baptist Church of Lewistown in Lewistown, Missouri.

John Eldon was a Deacon of the First Baptist Church of LaBelle. He served on the LEMO School Board and Grassy Creek Watershed Board and was a member of the Missouri Cattlemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Association. He lived and farmed in Lewis County all his life and was a member of the Lewistown High School basketball team in 1945-46 that won 49 games.

He is survived by his wife Margie Van Meter of Lewistown, Mo.; three children, John D. Van Meter and wife

operator while in the service. Terry was a member of the Elks in Silverton, Oregon for many years.

He worked with his father at the Parkview CafĂŠ and the Bee Hive in Quincy for several years before moving his family to California in 1964. There he worked for McDonald Douglas Aircraft as a printer.

In 1972 the family moved to Silverton where Terry worked for Stayton Canning as a Sanitation Supervisor.

In 2003 Terry and Carol retired and moved to their current residence in Missouri.

Terry was proud of the Toomey name, being a Marine and very proud of his children and grandchildren.

He respected and honored the American Flag, which he flew with pride at every home he lived in.

Terry enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting a passion for canines and especially his Boston Terrier Lady In addition to his wife Carol of Maywood, survivors include a son Thomas W. Toomey of Colorado; a daughter Patricia Ann Konigsmark of Salem, Oregon; a sister Sandra K. Toomey of Quincy; two brothers, Mike Toomey (Karen) of Quincy and Brian Toomey of Fowler, Ill.; five grandchildren, Terrance W. Toomey (Elsa) of Colorado, Jacqueline H. Toomey of Colorado, Caleb S. Kim of Lewistown, Mo., Dennis E. Van Meter and wife Sharon of Peoria, Il. and Holly J. Henze and husband Darrell of Quincy, Il.; six grandchildren, Justin Van Meter, Mark Motter and wife Kristin, Suzanne Noonen and husband Chris, Rebecca Van Meter, Hilary Fessenden and husband Todd and Kindra Henze; five greatgrandchildren, Matthew Motter, Noah Motter, Sophia Noonen, Michael Noonen, Bailey Vice, Brad Fessenden, Wade Fessenden and Grace Fessenden; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Robert Van Meter, brother, J.W. Van Meter, sister, Delores Stephenson and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Arnoldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Funeral Home in Lewistown, Missouri with Dr. Elmer McCully and Rev. James Renot officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday evening, Sept. 18 from 4 until 8 p.m. at Arnoldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Funeral Home in Lewistown. Pallbearers: Chris Noonen, Todd Fessenden, Dustin Van Meter, Larry Stice, Mike Wright and Jason Legg.

Honorary Pallbearers: Leland Phillips, Mike Van Meter, Tom Kitch, Bill Logan, E.H. Smith, Kenneth Rush, Steve Whitaker and Dick Vaughn.

Burial will be in the Lewistown Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.

Bronson, 83, of Krebs, Okla., formerly of Lewistown, Mo., died September 11, 2014 in McAlester, Okla.

He was born May 19, 1931 to Melvin Lillard and Marie (Fann) Bronson May 19, 1931 at Lewistown, Missouri. John graduated from Lewistown High School. He served in the US Air Force. John graduated from University of Missouri-Rolla with an electrical engineering degree. He worked for PSO in McAlester and Tulsa before retiring. He married Sylvia Brown June 1, 1993 at DeQueen, Arkansas. John enjoyed playing golf and handcrafting golf clubs. He enjoyed attending sporting events especially to watch his grandchildren play. John was of the Methodist Faith.

Surviving are his wife: Sylvia Bronson of the home; son, Richard Bronson of Wichita Falls, Texas; daughter, Patricia Bronson of Lawton, Oklahoma; granddaughter, Hallie Bronson of Mustang, Oklahoma; step-daughters: Kimberly Clift of Russellville, Ark., Kelli Halliburton and husband, David of Duncan, Okla.; six step-grandchildren; nine step great grand-grandchildren and other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

A gathering of remembrance was held September 13, 2014 at Bishop Funeral Service, McAlester, Okla.

HAZEL FERN BEVANS Hazel Fern Bevans, 87, of Lewis County, Mo., died September 15, 2014 at Country Aire Nursing Home in Lewistown, Mo. She was born on August 4, 1927 in Lewis County near Williamstown, Mo., the daughter of Abe I. Bevans and Linnie Glisan Bevans.

Hazel attended Providence Baptist Church with her family and the Morris school located near the family farm. She also attended Williamstown High School. She was employed by Western Auto in St. Louis, Mo., where she worked for over 30 years. She later moved to Winfield, Mo., where she resided until coming to the Country Aire Retirement Estates in 2011.

Survivors include one niece, Tara Burke Leas, and family of San Antonio, Texas. ; and one brother-in-law, James E. Burke of Amarillo, Texas and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Robert Bevans; three sisters, Mabel Lynn Burke, Ella Tompkins, and Ola Walker English; two nephews, Gary and Larry Tompkins; and William â&#x20AC;&#x153;Billâ&#x20AC;? Jack, her beloved friend and companion for over 35 years.

Visitation will be held Sunday, September 21 from 5 -7 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo. Graveside service will be held Monday, September 22 at 11a.m. at Providence Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. James Lackey officiating.

JAMES (JIM) LEE HURT Mr. James (Jim) Lee Hurt, 92, of Lewistown, Mo., died September 14, 2014 at Country Aire Retirement Estates in Lewistown.

He was born June 24, 1922 at Ewing, Mo., a son of Dora James and Claudy May Brown Hurt. He married Laura Louise Waggener on March 10, 1945. She died August 29, 1996.

Mr. Hurt was a Marine Veteran of WWII. He had worked for Motorola in Quincy for 30 years, retiring in 1985. Jim had a passion for gardening and shared the harvest with friends and neighbors. Jim enjoyed fishing and spending time with family and friends on the Mississippi. He was an astute card player.

Survivors include one daughter Debra (Debbe) L. Johnson of Hawthorn Woods, Ill.; two grandsons, Grant A. Johnson of Chicago, Ill., and Lee A. Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and infant son Danny.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing with Rev. Elmer Hagood officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, September 19, 2014 from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Ball-Davis Funeral Home in Ewing.

Music will be recorded selections. Pallbearers are Grant A. Johnson, Lee A. Johnson, Members of Lewis County Memorial Post 578 of the American Legion.

Highland Cross Country

Holiday Bazaar and Craft Show The Lewis County Youth Football League is planning the second annual Holiday Bazaar/Craft Show to be held at Highland Elementary School on Oct. 25, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Vendors will be allowed to set up at 7 a.m.

on Oct. 25. Vendors will be accepted on a firstcome, first-serve basis.

All proceeds will go to the Lewis County Youth Football League. To reserve a booth space or for more information contact Laura Meyer at (217) 2427308.

Cross Country is a new event for the athletic department at Highland High School this year.

New Superintendent John French was instrumental in bringing the sport to the Highland campus.

French’s oldest son was a state champion in the sport at their previous school and his younger son is participating in the sport at Highland Superintendent French is the sponsor and coach of Highland Cross Country, along with physical education teacher Coach Chris

Prewitt.

The Highland Cross County team members and coaches held a 24 hour fundraiser this past weekend at Highland. Pledges were given miles ran by member and coaches of the team. The event started Friday evening after the football game and a total of 204.25 miles were completed with most of the runners each completing about 15 to 16 miles each.

Mr. French said that the event was a huge success and he acknowledges the hard work and dedication

of the grueling challenge that team members accepted and took in stride.

He is extremely proud of them all. He also said he appreciates everyone who contributed to the success of the event by donating, sponsoring a runner and providing moral support and encouragement. The runners had to overcome cold chilly temperatures and a long night with little or no sleep to make the event a reality.

He also appreciates and give thanks to Lisa and Chris Leppert for supply-

ing the breakfast pizza and his wife Janet for supplying the spaghetti and all the other parents who provided snacks. USB bank also made a donation. The team has several competing events scheduled this fall and will participate in district tournament action in early November.

The team is still accepting and needing donations and anyone who would like to donate can contact Superintendent/Coach French or Coach Prewitt at Highland High School at (573)209-3217.

Culver-Stockton College has announced that Greg McVey has tendered his resignation as the athletic director of CulverStockton College. McVey has been employed at the College since 2010.

“Everyone at C-SC wishes Greg well on his next chapter,” Dr. Kelly M.

Thompson, president of Culver-Stockton College, said. “Moving forward, the College will continue to grow and see success in athletics.”

Culver-STockton College will begin the search for the next athletic director immediately.

Highland Wins Tournament

The Highland Lady Cougars softball team took home first place in the Elsberry tournament.

She had a 2-run double that tied the game, she tagged up and scored the go ahead run (at the time) on a sacrifice fly by Brooke Miller, and then had the bases loaded walk-off rbi single in the bottom of the 7th to win it.

Avery Johnson led off the bottom of the 7th of a tied game with a triple to deep right field and Zumwalt intentionally walked the next two batters to set up the force out.Kara worked it to a full count and singled to the right side to win it. After the win the Lady Cougars had a 9-3 record.

Highland and Canton softball teams were to play at Highland on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The game was rescheduled after rain forced the cancellation of the Sept. 15 game.

Swingle Named Player of the Week Culver-Stockton College quarterback Chris Swingle has been named the Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) last Saturday.

Swingle, a freshman from Blue Springs, Mo., made his first career collegiate start a memorable one as he completed 16 of his 28 passes for 385 yards and a school-record tying four touchdowns in the Wildcatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 57-0 victory

The Highland Football Cougars faced Macon at their second home game of the season. The Cougars were defeated 26-0 against the Tigers.

The Highland Lady Softball Cougars won the Elsberry tournament Saturday, Sept. 13. The beat Christian 13-0, Silex 105, and Fort Zumwalt East 6-5.

In the first game, Avery Johnson pitched the complete game and gave up two hits, walked two, and struck out 12. Casey Hinkle was 3 for 3 with three runs scored, Amber Garner was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two rbi and three runs, Avery Johnson was 3 for 3 with 2 triples and 5 rbiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

In the second game, Dana Flanagan pitched the complete game and got the win, giving up five hits, three walks, and struck out two. Offensively, Casey Hinkle was 2 for 3 and scored twice, Avery was 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, Karley Smith was 1 for 2 with a 3-rbi double, and Kara Baker was 2 for 2 with 3 rbiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

Volleyball League Honors Culver-Stockton College outside hitter Kamrin Gold and setter Casey Giovanazzi have been named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Volleyball Player and Setter of the Week, respectively, for their play during the Wildcatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; 5-0 week last week.

Gold, a junior from Flint, Mich. (CarmanAinsworth HS / University of Maryland), averaged team highs in kills (3.41) and dig (4.18) per set last week. She hit at a 29.8 percent clip, committing just 16 errors on her 141 attempts. In addition, Gold added six service aces, six blocks and was perfect on

29 serve receive attempts.

She was also named the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hitter of the Week.

Giovanazzi, a senior from Baltimore, Md. (Catensville HS / Towson University), averaged 10.68 assists per set in the five matches last week. She also recorded 2.24 digs per set, added eight service aces and garnered one kill per set.

The Wildcats, now 9-2 overall and winners of eight straight matches, travel to Fayette, Mo., Sept. 16, to face Central Methodist University.
