Local Cuisine: Try the fresh fish, the unique fish soups and the famous shrimps from Symi. You must also try galeopita, which is basically a pie with silversides.

Where time stops Once you step foot on the port of Symi, Gialos, you will instantly be transferred to a scenery dating back to the 18th century. The island of the spongers with the two-story mansions and the picturesque paths retains its authenticity unchangeable throughout time. Symi got its name from the princess of Rhodes who eloped with Glafkos, the Greek god, and is a preserved area of rare architectural tradition. Before you get to your room, do admire the tower with the municipal clock built in 1880 at the entrance of the natural port. Later, you can wander around Ano Symi to the top of the hill dominated by the castle and Megali Panagia. When you go up the 500 stairs of Kali Strata that unite the two settlements you will admire the scenery of Gialos with its port as well as the Minor Asia coasts. You can visit the Arcaeological Museum and the Nautical Museum of the island and get on the boat that will take you to the impressive beach of Agios Georgios with the steep breathtaking cliff of a height of 300 meters or Nanou beach surrounded by thick greenery and cypresses. The organized beach of NOS near the harbor lends itself for relaxation without you having to move too far away from your base. If you have a vehicle, do not miss admiring the Monastery of Panormitis built in the thick pine forest and the closed bay. Look for the Twelve Caves (Dodeka Spilaia) in Niborio with the byzantine influences only three kilometers northwest of the capital.
