Beta Kappa, the first chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® chartered in San Diego, CA., began in 1935 on the San Diego State University campus. Beta Kappa was initially a combination chapter, comprising both Graduate and Undergraduate members. As Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® experienced significant growth, the organization eventually phased out combination chapters to better serve its expanding membership.
Epsilon Xi Omega Graduate Chapter was chartered on October 25, 1949. The chapter was chartered by 25 visionary women: Clara Bailey, Gladys Ross Bartlesson Williams, Betty Brown, Lucille Culbertson, Ruby Hubert, Verna King, Jane Leigh, Itaska Lewis, June Lewis, Evada Long, Ira McAllister, June McCann, Elizabeth McGee, Ruth McGregor, Helen Nelson, Ruth Parker, Octavia Payne Coleman, Mercedes Ritchey, Marie Roberts, Gladys Robinson, Hallie Dell Quinn, Alma Fry Shaw, Bernice Small, Eunice Simmons, and Alice Whatley. These charter members laid the foundation for EXO’s enduring legacy of service and sisterhood in the San Diego community.
EXO is a distinguished chapter that has enriched lives for over three-quarters of a century, composed of college-educated women who uphold high ethical standards and remain dedicated to the sorority’s founding principle of “Service To All Mankind.” As members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, we have a collective responsibility to serve those in need and lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy. This commitment extends to supporting and guiding the Mu Iota Undergraduate Chapter across UCSD, USD, and SDSU campuses. In 2020, EXO expanded its impact by establishing The Ebony Pearls Foundation of San Diego, Inc. as its philanthropic arm.
Decades of Transformative Community Initiatives include:
• Mentoring over 1,200 Female High School students through the Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Academy Program. The program includes leadership workshops, cultural events, social experiences, and community service projects.
• Hosting the annual Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Academy Gala (formerly known as the EXO Debutante Ball), a celebration of Black Excellence since 1955.
• Awarding hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to college bound High School Seniors.

The first Epsilon Xi Omega (EXO) Chapter Debutante Ball was in 1955 and founded by Soror Barbara Anderson under the leadership of Anna Smith as Basileus. The initial purpose of the Ball was to enrich the cultural opportunities for Negro girls. That purpose has been expanded to encourage and cultivate high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among high school females and their escorts, to enhance the social skills, of youth between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, to develop leadership skills and to contribute monetary resources for maintaining an interest in college life.
Over a period of 61 years, EXO has mentored over 1,000 future scholars and community leaders in its Debutante Leadership and Enhancement programs.

Any time women come together with a collective intention, it’s a powerful thing. Whether it’s sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, or planning a birthday party, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens.

From the moment we knew you were coming, you have brought us excitement and a joy without end. We are so proud of you and all that you have accomplished. You have a way of bringing a smile to our hearts with your actions and with your words. You always bring laughter to any environment with your sense of humor. Thank you for being a delightful young lady. As for your academics, I have not seen someone wo time. You’ll always go the extra mile and put in the extra effort. I am thrilled to see you engage in ways that you do in school. It is hard to believe that your senior year is finally here. You’ve managed to stick through with all of your commitments such as band, sports and the different clubs and organizations that you belong to you have managed, and you are doing well a life is coming to an end.

Dearest CeeJay,
Your voice has always been your biggest defining feature. As a child, we knew it was something special. From letting us know you were not happy about something you wanted or didn’t want, to blessing us with a song in the Children's Choir in church, your voice has always rang out. Watching that voice mature and grow with you into a beautiful and strong instrument of God's good works, grace and mercy, has been our greatest joy.
We love you and are so proud of you!

Dearest Charley,

Your smile has been a beautiful part of our lives from day one. When you were a few days old, we both recall looking at that wonderful smile at 3:00 a.m. as you were up and ready for the world. Your spirit of joy and eagerness has kept us all on our toes. We, as a family, have all grown because of your ‘let’s go’ attitude and fun loving heart. God has blessed you and you have blessed us! We love you and are so proud of you!

Nevaeh, my first, my lifeline, My favorite human! Words could never express how proud we are of the young lady you are becoming. God definitely did His big one when he created such a humble, caring, lovable young lady like yourself to be my daughter. It’s been an honor raising such a sweet girl. Over the past 17 years you truly taught me patience and how to love unconditionally. Remain humble and never change who you are to please man. Keep an open mind and always be open to learn and grow. Let your light shine and allow God to move through your bright soul! I’m so confident that you will be great. All the many accomplishments you’ve had this far, there has to be many more to come. Remember who you are and Who’s you are; child of a the most high which makes you royalty! Keep your head high, shoulders back and remind yourself: I am beautiful, I am smart. Mommy loves you so does the Lord. Love you more Mommy!!

“Not to let anyone convince you that your dream, your vision to be an entrepreneur is something that you shouldn’t do. What often happens is that people who are well meaning, who really care for us are afraid for us and talk us out of it.”
- Cathy Hughes, Entrepreneur

“We must together. Work together. To see where we are. Where we are headed, where we are going and our vision for where we should be. But also see it as a moment to, yes. Together, address the challenges and to work on the opportunities that are presented by this moment.”
- Kamala Harris, Former Vice President, United States

We stand in awe of the remarkable young lady before us. Your character has always radiated brightly, a testament to your authenticity. May your friends and family shower you with their warmest wishes as you embark on the adventures that lie ahead.

You entered our world like a “tornado” impatient and ready to turn our lives upside down. Your beautiful smile, infectious laugh, and questionable “side-eye” looks draw others like a magnet where everyone wants to be with you.

As your godmother, I have watched you grow from a precocious baby who had everyone wrapped around her finger to the young woman actively involved in her family, church, and community. You are truly a blessing to me and the family as Yaya’s Baby, Mommy’s Mini-Me, and Forever will be Fish for Grandma Megofna. I am so proud of you and your accomplishments, especially becoming an Ebony Pearl.
You are quick to learn things and work gracefully with others [most of the time :) ]. But what I love most about you is your tenacious spirit and fierce loyalty to those who are blessed to call you family and friend. I love you to the moon and back, SoMyJo, my favorite, as you love to tell others. May Our Father continue to bless and protect you as you navigate your Senior year and beyond.

Love always, Nina
