A Welcome Message from the Ebony Pearls Foundation of San Diego Inc. President
Parents, Guardians, Family, Friends, and Guests,
On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Ebony Pearls Foundation of San Diego Inc., I welcome you to the sixty-seventh Annual Youth Leadership Gala, “Ebony Pearls… Excellence Personified”. This event marks a significant milestone in the lives of the young women being presented tonight. Not only is this an auspicious occasion for the Ebony Pearls but also for parents/guardians, friends and loved ones who are present to witness tonight’s gala…the culmination of a leadership development program that has spanned the past six months. We are very proud of this program and the significance it has had on the San Diego Community for almost seven decades.
With great perseverance, positivity, and patience, the 20 Ebony Pearls have participated in workshops, cultural and artistic experiences and community service projects. Participating in these activities has enabled each to bond with other young women and establish friendships that will transcend this season and continue for many years to come.
These beautiful and intellectually gifted young women are leaders in their schools and communities and are destined to continue as leaders making significant and historic contributions to their communities and to the entire world. They will be able to tap into their limitless potential and make their unique dreams and goals become reality.
On behalf of The Ebony Pearls Foundation of San Diego Inc., I thank the parents/guardians for entrusting us with your Ebony Pearls. The young men, our marshals, who participated in the program are also to be commended for their contribution and involvement in this historic event.
I salute the women who provided leadership to this year’s leadership program: General Chairmen Pamela Gray-Payton, Hollie Davis-Allen, and Co-Chairman Shawanda McGuire, along with the numerous others who served in leadership roles. The San Diego Community is enhanced and culturally benefited by the efforts and dedication of the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Xi Omega chapter and The Ebony Pearls Foundation of San Diego Inc. who continue the beautiful legacy of the annual Youth Leadership Program and gala.

A welcome message from our Alpha Kappa Alpha San Diego Graduate Chapter President

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Welcome to the San Diego Chapter (Epsilon Xi Omega) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and Ebony Pearls Foundation signature event. We are excited that you chose to join us in this spectacular celebration tonight, where we will honor the achievements of 20 outstanding high school young ladies who successfully completed the Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Academy. The purpose of providing a youth leadership academy to young ladies poised to begin their secondary education, is to ensure they are ready to tackle all challenges and to ensure that they are exposed to opportunities that may not have been known to them before.
For example, they may not have been familiar with the scholarship opportunities we sponsor. They may not have known about our assistance with college applications. They may have learned information about new careers by attending a mock trial in California Superior Court and banking workshop.
In addition to receiving assistance, these young ladies contributed to their community by donating supplies to the battered women’s shelter and supporting the community celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Day of Service. This culminating gala event allows the young ladies to showcase their ballroom dancing talents, honed by a multitude of rehearsals, while they glide gracefully across the floor and under the sparkling chandeliers.
Thank you to all the sorority members who volunteered to guide these young ladies through seven months of activities. Special thanks to the 2022/2023 leadership for this program: General Chairs Pamela Gray Payton and Hollie DavisAllen; and Co-Chair Shawanda McGuire.
Sincerely,
Dr. Emma Turner, President Epsilon Xi Omega Chapter Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®
67th Youth Leaderhip Academy Gala General Co-Chairman

Dear Ebony Pearls, Families and Friends,
As the Co-General Chairmen and Co-Chairman of this year’s 67th Annual Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Academy, it is an honor to welcome each of you to this evening’s culminating Gala, “Ebony Pearls: Excellence Personified.”
Congratulations to the 2023 Ebony Pearls. Tonight is your night! After several months of stimulating programming including educational workshops hosted by leading experts, participating in a mock trial hosted by The Honorable Terrie Roberts, celebrating African American culture and history during a beautiful Kwanzaa celebration with Dr. T. Ford, to attending high tea, our 20 Ebony Pearls have been busy. We hope the experience has helped them grow into more compassionate, curious, and culturally competent young leaders.
It has been an honor to work with our Ebony Pearls, marshals, families, and Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Committee Chairmen to present this year’s Program and Gala. We also want to thank the leadership of the Ebony Pearls of San Diego, Inc Foundation, and Epsilon Xi Omega Chapter for their support and guidance throughout the season.
We also want to thank our Co-Host the Honorable Council President Pro Tem Monica Montgomery-Steppe and Mr. Frank Robinson. Your commitment to our youth is inspiring and reminds us to never stop giving back to the community.

History of the Ebony Pearls Youth Leadership Academy Gala
TThe first Epsilon Xi Omega (EXO) Chapter Debutante Ball was in 1955 and founded by Barbara Anderson under the leadership of Anna Smith as President. The initial purpose of the Ball was to enrich the cultural opportunities for Negro girls. That purpose has been expanded to encourage and cultivate high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among high school females and their escorts, to enhance the social skills of youth between the ages of sixteen and nineteen, to develop leadership skills and to contribute monetary resources for maintaining an interest in college life. EXO has mentored over 1,000 future scholars and community leaders in its Leadership and Enhancement programs.

There will be hills, valleys, and rough terrain along your path. Always be proud of who you are, your rich history, and legacy of excellence because as Lorraine Hansberry would say, “though it be a thrilling and marvelous thing to be merely young and gifted in such times, it is doubly so, doubly dynamic to be young, gifted, and black.”

“Black Girls…
Don’t be afraid to use your voice. Your thoughts, opinions, and ideas are just as important as anybody else’s. When you speak, speak with boldness and purpose. Have courage, be confident, and always be true to yourself! Live your life fearlessly! Your voice has GREAT power; don’t be afraid to utilize it when needed. You’re NOT an angry Black woman; you’re a woman who has something important to say. Your voice matters and so do YOU.”

Dear Ciara

The world will try to tell you who you are, but I challenge you to define yourself. Be confident that you are an important and unique soul, created by God with intention and a purpose. We, your family, celebrated your birth and continue to be blessed by your life as you grow into a wonderful young woman. Live your life, unapologetically, without fear of ridicule or judgement from others. Take wise risks, and don't be afraid to fail. We all fall down, but as long as you stand up, learn, and seek the will of God in your next step, you will succeed. I support you always baby! -Love, Auntie Gabe So proud to call you my niece!

Watching you grow from an infant to a young woman has been a joyful and amazing journey! As grandparents, we share experiences and the knowledge we've gained during our lifetime, with the hope of imparting wisdom that will assist you on your journey. You are so loved and valued! Be strong, face challenges head on and walk in faith. Be the woman that God created you to be. Understand that knowledge is power and when you are committed, success will come. Be kind to others. A one-time encounter can leave a lifetime imprint on the minds or hearts of others.
