A Brief History of of Maryland, Inc. THE ALLIANCE

OF BLACK WOMEN ATTORNEYS

The Alliance of Black Women Attorneys of Maryland, an affiliate of the National Bar Association and the American Bar Association, was established in 1979.

As Maryland’s first bar association developed by and for black women, the primary purpose of the founders was the creation of a network to enhance the professional development of African American women attorneys.

The Alliance provides strength, encouragement, resources and support to its members. Initially, the Alliance sought to advance its objectives by way of three primary means: promoting the interests of African American attorneys; improving the skills for the efficient practice of the profession; and increasing the viability and recognition of African American women attorneys.

To these ends, the Alliance has been successful.

“We honor the past presidents and members whose work allows us to contribute to our mission.”

Congratulations Alliance!

During my term, the Alliance has increased its membership and with it, its involvement and support of local communities. Our members volunteered at the VA Hospital on Patriot’s Day, the MD Food Bank and the Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson Charter School We held school supply, winter coat, and even a “rebra” drive for Breast Cancer Awareness month The theme of my presidency was “Inclusion,” with that goal in mind, the Alliance partnered with other specialty bar associations to bring its members a variety of programming. From our first training with Free-State Ju stice to our last panel discussion “Having it All” we have remained constant in our mission to promote, uplift, and enhance the professional development of African American women attorneys

Dear Esteemed Colleagues:

Congratulations to the Alliance of Black Women Attorneys (Alliance) on the occasion of the 45th Anniversary. The Office of the Public Defender (OPD) applauds the Alliance for an unwavering commitment to ensuring that the diverse voices, experiences, and perspectives of Black women are represented in the legal profession. OPD is proud to share in the work of building an equitable Maryland.

The consistent work of the Alliance in identifying, nurturing, and supporting Black female leaders has been and remains critical to continued progress in Maryland. I am particularly grateful for the role that the Alliance has played in nurturing my professional growth and development. The path created, wisdom shared, and support given by the phenomenal women of the Alliance were instrumental in my journey to becoming the first person of color to lead the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. The Alliance’s ability to promote personal well-being and nurture professional growth is nestled in the creation of a safe space where Black women can connect and share experiences. The heart of the organization is community; a community of phenomenal Black women lawyers which has and continues to forge the path for individuals to break barriers, navigate challenges and make a positive impact in the legal profession.

The road to dismantling systemic barriers and establishing a truly equitable legal system remains long and many are needed to pave the way. The Alliance’s legacy of mentoring future leaders, enhancing skill development and empowering women who advocate for justice continues to be an inspiration to us all. OPD looks forward to continuing to support and collaborate with the Alliance in our shared mission to amplify the voices of underrepresented groups and create a more inclusive legal environment. Thank you and congratulations on 45 years of great service!

Best regards,
