Kamakura Buddha: Japanese Heritage Sites Stretching almost 45 feet in height, the Great Buddha of Kamakura (Kamakura Daibutsu) is a colossal bronze statue of Amida Buddha, which stands on the grounds of Kotokuin Temple. It is the second tallest bronze Buddha statue in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in Nara's Todaiji Temple. The statue was cast in 1252 and originally located inside a large temple hall. However, the temple buildings were destroyed multiple times by typhoons and a tidal wave in the 14th and 15th centuries. So, since 1495, the Buddha has been standing in the open air. Japan is divided for administrative purposes into 47 prefectures stretching from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south. Japan's four main islands are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. Hokkaido's History Hokkaido's history is shaped by its indigenous people the Ainu. Hokkaido, known as Ezo during the Edo Period (16031868) largely lay outside the control of the shogunate regime in Edo (Tokyo), however with the coming of the modernizing Meiji government in the 1870's, Ainu culture was largely subsumed during the 20th century, but there has been a recent welcome resurgence and interest in traditional Ainu culture and Ainu handicrafts of late. There are Ainu villages and museums of Ainu culture at Poroto Kotan and Nibutani north of Noboribetsu.
Niseko, one of the best ski resorts in Japan, 100 km west of Sapporo and increasingly popular with visitors from Australia and Asia. Asahikawa, centrally-located and Hokkaido's second largest city after Sapporo. Abashiri - the northern town of Abarashiri is known for its drift ice and Abashiri Prison Museum. Wakkanai, a laid-back northern port ideal for reaching the islands of Rebun and Reshiri and nearby Cape Soya and its many monuments. Rebun Island (Rebun-to), located off the north west coast of Hokkaido is known for its alpine flowers in summer. Rishiri Island is dominated by the 1700m-high Mt Rishiri and is ideal for hiking and cycling in summer. Cape Soya, near Wakkanai, is the northern most point in Hokkaido and Japan. Noboribetsu, Hokkaido's main hot spring (onsen) resort.
Hokkaido's Cities & Places of Interest Sapporo, the prefectural capital and arrival point for most flights to the region. Weather in Hokkaido Hokkaido has a different feel from the rest of Japan. The weather is cooler with less humidity in the summer and the region escapes the earlier monsoon. Winters are cold and long, stretching from November to March, but are ideal for winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding, the celebrated snow festival (Yuki Matsuri) in Sapporo and the frozen northern seas off the coast of Wakkanai and the islands of Rebun and Rishiri.

Ferry There are a number of ferry services operating to and from various ports in Hokkaido. Otaru to Maizuru, Niigata and Tsuruga. Hakodate to Aomori and Oma.

Tohoku
Tohoku includes the six prefectures of Aomori, Akita, Iwate, Yamagata, Miyagi and Fukushima. The Tohoku area has from historical times been one of the relatively less developed parts of Japan. Tohoku was historically occupied by the Emishi, before they were defeated by the Yamato during the Nara and Heian periods and driven north into Hokkaido or subjugated where they were.
Tohoku's main towns and places of interest are: Sendai - Miyagi prefectural capital with a vibrant history and modernity. Kakunodate - an old samurai castle town with many Edo Period buildings still intact. Hiraizumi - little now remains of Hiraizumi's former glory but during the Heian Period, the then city of around 100,000 people rivaled the wealth of Kyoto in its sophisticated arts and refined culture.
The region is marked by long and severe winter weather with cooler and more pleasant temperatures in summer.
Matsushima - just outside Sendai is known for the beauty of its coastline dotted with scores of pine-topped islands.
The Tohoku region's early history is dominated by its remoteness as the central authorities based in the center of Japan around Kyoto sought to impose their control from the 7th century on.
Aomori - in the far north is known for its unique Nebuta festival and related arts.
The north east coast of Tohoku was devastated by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Much of the damaged infrastructure and housing have been rebuilt but the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Incident is still ongoing with an exclusion zone still in effect around the damaged plant.
Hirosaki - has many architectural reminders of the Meiji Period and a popular castle. Morioka - Iwate's green prefectural capital is famous for its Wanko soba noodles. Akita - draws visitors for its summer Kanto festival, great art galleries and its famous sake. Oirase Gorge - in Aomori Prefecture is one of Japan's most beautiful river valleys especially in the autumn season.

Chubu The Chubu (literally, "middle part") of Japan comprises nine prefectures that - as the name suggests - occupy the center of the main island of Honshu. Chubu basically stretches between Kyoto in the west and Tokyo in the east. The Chubu region has very different climates and landscapes. The weather on the Japan Sea coast is cooler than the baking southern Pacific coast around Nagoya in summer with heavy snow along the north coast in winter. Winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding are possible in Nagano, Niigata and Gifu, three prefectures whose mountains make up the majestic Japan Alps. The Winter Olympics were successfully held in Nagano in 1998 and the prefecture is a favorite with skiers and snow-boarders, who flock to resorts such as Hakuba. Chubu Prefectures On the Japan Sea coast - offering skiing in winter and rugged seascapes - are Niigata, Toyama, Ishikawa and Fukui prefectures. Inland - with national parks, hot springs (onsen) and natural forest - are Yamanashi, Nagano, and Gifu prefectures. On the largely industrialized Pacific coast (but still offering much in the way of outdoor beauty) are Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures. Aichi's capital city, Nagoya, is the Chubu region's main transport hub. From Tokyo to Nagoya takes two hours and a half by shinkansen, and Nagoya further west to Kyoto/Osaka, one hour and a half. Trains from Nagoya go to popular tourist destinations throughout Chubu such as Takayama, Nagano (gateway to
the Japan Alps), Shizuoka (home to Mt. Fuji), the hot spring town of Gero and historically restored Gifu. The Chubu region has many popular, bizarre and spectacular festivals to enjoy throughout the year including the Naked Festival at Konomiya and the Honen-sai in Inuyama. Tokai, Hokuriku & Koshin Sub-Regions Forming part of, and overlapping, the Chubu region are three unofficial regions: Tokai, Hokuriku & Koshin. The Tokai subregion comprises inland Gifu, the two Pacific coastal prefectures of Shizuoka and Aichi, and Aichi's neighbor, Mie prefecture (also on the Pacific coast, and part of the Kansai region). The Hokuriku sub-region comprises Ishikawa, Fukui, Niigata and Toyama - all on the Japan Sea coast. The Koshin region comprises Yamanashi and Nagano prefectures. Chubu's Cities Nagoya, the prefectural capital of Aichi Prefecture and arrival point for many international flights to the region at the recent, offshore Chubu International Airport. Nagoya is Japan's fourth largest city and a major industrial zone which includes many factories servicing the giant car-maker, Toyota Corp. Shizuoka, a modern, relaxing city within easy reach of Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula. Toyohashi, an historic, pleasant city on the Tokaido Highway. Kansai Kansai, also known as the Kinki region is located in the south central region of the main island of Honshu, about 400 km (250 miles) west of the Kanto region.
Osaka, is Kansai's major industrial city and transport hub for the region with many international flights arriving at the offshore Kansai International Airport.
The Kansai region includes both the Japan Sea and Pacific Ocean coastal areas and the seven prefectures of Hyogo, Kyoto, Mie, Nara, Osaka, Shiga and Wakayama.

The Kansai area has very different climates and landscapes. The weather on the Japan Sea coast is cooler than the hot southern Pacific coast around Osaka and Kyoto in summer with heavy snow along the north coast in winter. In prehistoric times, the plains below the mountain site of Fukano Village, contemporary Iga and Nabari cities, were part of the bed of Lake Biwa, which makes for fertile soil and bountiful rice harvests today. Proximity to the capitals (Nara and Kyoto) made it one of the areas where many aristocratic manors developed, and because the Taki-no-hara region of contemporary Nabari produced good quality iron-sand containing high concentrations of titanium, in antiquity it became home to many manors controlled by the Taira clan, attracting the attention of the centers of power of that time. Good quality iron-sand is used in the production of swords and armor, and for this reason prior to the appearance of the Taira, the Fujiwara clan controlled the manors. The Imperial Court also seems to have attempted to monopolize control of the area. Outcrops of megaliths are found at the old practice sites of Shugendo, or mountain asceticism, and because of the presence of sand-iron, leaders among the mountain ascetics with knowledge of mining technology became involved in extracting sand from these places, the production of military goods and the shipping of the finished product. Chugoku The Chugoku region consists of the south west part of Honshu Island. An alternative name for the region is the Sanin San'yo Chiho. Chugoku includes five prefectures: Okayama Prefecture, Shimane Prefecture, Hiroshima Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture and Yamaguchi Prefecture. Chugoku is heavily industrialized along its Pacific Coast but much more rural in its mountainous interior and along the Sea of Japan Coast. The weather in the region is similar to that in Kansai and Kanto with heavy snowfall in the winters along the Sea of Japan Coast and hot and humid days in summer. The northern coast of the region had cultural links with the Korean Peninsula in its early history and Hiroshima developed as a military port and garrison from the Meiji Period on.

Shikoku Shikoku's history was shaped by its relative remoteness from the main island. In the 12th century the defeated Heike (Taira) clan fled here to escape their Genji (Minamoto) enemies after the decisive sea battle of Dannoura near Shimonoseki in western Honshu. Still Shikoku has produced some of Japan's most influential historical figures including Kobo Daishi (Kukai), Sakamoto Ryoma, Itagaki Taisuke and the botanist Makino Tomitaro. There are also excellent onsen and opportunities for hiking in Shikoku as well as swimming on the southern coast around Kochi. The islands of Okinawa were part of the Chinese-influenced Ryukyu Kingdom until absorbed by Japan at the end of the nineteenth century and the islands retain vestiges of their traditional culture. Okinawa, still the poorest of Japan's prefectures and with a heavy US military presence, is now considered a tropical holiday destination with excellent beaches, snorkelling, windsurfing and scuba-diving.

HELLS OF BEPPU
Umi Jigoku One of the more beautiful hells, the "sea hell" features a pond of boiling, blue water. In its spacious gardens, there are a few smaller, orange colored hells and a clear water pond with lotus flowers whose large leaves are strong enough to carry small children.
Chinoike Jigoku The "blood pond hell" features a pond of hot, red water and a large souvenir shop. It is one of the more photogenic hells.
Oniishibozu Jigoku This hell is named after the mud bubbles, which emerge from boiling mud pools and look like the shaven heads of monks. There is also a foot bath with clear water.
Shiraike Jigoku True to its name, the "white pond hell" features a pond of hot, milky water. The pond is surrounded by a nice garden and a small, run-down aquarium that has seen better days.
Tatsumaki Jigoku The "spout hell" features a boiling hot geyser, which erupts every 30-40 minutes for about 6-10 minutes.

Beppu is a famously geothermal city on the island of Kyushu – more onsen water gushes from the ground here than anywhere else in Japan.
