Project Description: The master planning exercise for Florida Atlantic University Honors Campus takes a non-traditional approach to campus planning, mitigating contextual issues of displaced suburban sprawl, introducing a versatile housing fabric with diverse, more communal forms of living.

1) Increase density

Currently, the existing campus for the Florida Atlantic University Honors College sits within a disengaged, commuter-driven, South Florida suburb. Majority of attendees have at least a 30 minute commute to campus and consequentially, live a more car-dependent lifestyle. Demographically, the campus presents a unique perspective on the idea of a ‘college town’, with the average age of a Jupiter resident being 53 and access to about 20 surrounding senior living and retirement communities.

An extension of the pedestrian friendly social spine running through campus, the plaza creates a smooth transition between campus and Abacoa Public Plaza

Within the new campus master plan, clusters of non-traditinal housing, a neuroscience facility, a multi-purpose hub, and a public plaza were implemented to further accomplish the project goals of increasing density, improving walkability, and promoting communal living.

The hub provides amenities for both students and visitors from the surrounding community, acting as a gateway to the campus Hub

The relationship between the programmatic needs for the neuroscience facility and the socially activated context of the [BAND]Scape master plan was explored through a generative matrix.

SocialLab

Project Description: Social Lab exists within the context of the [BAND]Scape master plan. This facility for the education and research of neuroscience, explores how architecture can have the capacity to adapt to the specific needs for lighting and exposure, based on and as a result of an intensely regulated program, located within a socially activated context.

Tools Used: Rhino 5, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Lumion

Project Considerations: 1) Natural Light 2) Privacy

The matrix initally organized each programmatic element around the needs for natural lighting and privacy in relation to one another. Then, taking into account the square footage each element of program would require, dividing further vertically, proposing three different levels of privacy between the facility and the public realm.

Within the [BAND]Scape master plan, SocialLab sits at the southern opening of the interactive ‘social channel’. The channel itself took on a distinct formal language that would now further inform the language of the neuroscience building.

The generative matrix produced diagrammatic floor plans, which, when extruded into 3D masses, laid the foundation for the buildings formal exploration

The “Maker Economy” within the Jefferson Terminal District provides a unique and concentrated activity center unlike any other area in the city.

JTD’s current residential densities do not align with the city’s planned growth.

The district faces large scale flooding issues that impair commerce and mobility.

Scenario #1: Terminals

The Wards scenario divides the district into four single wards, each with their unique character: Mercer Residential, Old Okee Corridor, the Warehouse District, and Australian Ward.

The Terminal Scenario pinpoints four intersections in the district in which has the main growth potential. Resources will be focused on urban equipment, including private and public infrastructure.
