UTOPIA: a perfect world. In which we are all healthy, free from illness and disease and where we know exactly what to eat and how to exercise for the optimum benefit of our bodies. If only!

#63,095.That’s the number of diet books available on Amazon. I think it’s fair to assume that if one type of diet worked for every human on the planet, then there would only be one book! And do stand-alone diets work? We are seeing incredible results from clients on our Kick Start Fat Loss Diet and Exercise Club (KSFL) running in Falmouth, Helston and Penryn. Many of these are clients who have tried counting calories, tried the two shakes a day, and many of the other ‘diet’ options that are really temporary fixes. KSFL advocates a change in eating habits and lifestyle, so it’s not just you who benefits but
also your whole family. #160,000 fitness books on the market. Do we really need that many? The simple answer is YES! There is no One Size Fits All when it comes to diet and fitness. We all have something about us that makes us unique, not just our fingerprints. Part of the fun is to find out what suits our bodies, our lifestyles, and our sense of fun. Step out of your comfort zone and try out some new forms of exercise, particularly the ones that sound a bit challenging. If you try something and you don’t like it or more importantly, it doesn’t give you the results you want, move on. #1 person can change your day – make you smile, inspire you or simply acknowledge you. New fitness products hit the market year on year. Last year we were the first in Falmouth to launch FitSteps, this winter we

YOU JUST CA ...That moment when someone who may not IN light of the recent high seas and stormy weather conditions I was very excited to meet Falmouth Coastguard’s rescue centre manager James Instance and hear about the important life-saving work of our Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.
I asked him how he first became a member of the Coastguard.‘After studying at Portsmouth University I started work as a beach lifeguard’, said James,‘I was working on a lot of beaches around the north Cornish coast in particular, including Portreath, Porthtowan, St Agnes, Hollywell Bay etc. I also travelled to South Africa and did some lifeguarding there.
Beaches
‘It got to the stage in September of 1996 when I was wondering what to do with my life. I had seen the Coastguards at work while I was on the beaches and I knew some people who were interested in the maritime environment so I applied to join the Cosatguard, went for the interview, and a lot of people had a history in the Merchant Navy, but they didn’t have too many people with experience on the beaches so it went from there. ‘I started at the bottom, not knowing any of the details and intricacies, but I found it fascinating and worked hard to get myself up the ladder in the organisation as quickly as I could. ‘When I got promoted I moved to other parts of the country but I wanted to bring the children up in Cornwall so came back here.’ James and his wife Amely have two children, daughter Seren (9) and son Joel (12). I asked James to tell me about the job he does now. ‘I manage the station to make sure that the team are on watch 24 hours a day and are trained and competent in what they are required to do.
By ASHLEY WALL ‘I make sure all the equipment works and am also on call - so in the event of a major incident I will come in and co-ordinate the operation. ‘The job of the Coastguard itself is to co-ordinate any search and rescue incident that is not military - involving the cliffs, coastline, coast path, beaches and the sea, out to 1,200 miles out from the Devon and Cornwall border on the north coast until Dodman point on the south coast and the Isles of Scilly, that includes 660,000 square miles of sea so it’s a massive area. ‘Falmouth also has a unique point that is different to any other Coastguard station which is that we are responsible for any British ship worldwide. So if any British ship gets into difficulty anywhere across the world (yacht, cruise ship, container vessel etc) we receive the information. ‘This can come via satellite phones or mobile phones but also emergency beacons. These can send off signals which will be picked up by us in Falmouth and this will give us a position via GPS. If the position is in an area which has a good search and rescue service we will pass the details of they alert on to them.
Rescue
‘If not - if it’s somewhere more wild or remote - we will co-ordinate the rescue from here.We send out messages via satellites to ships in the area to go and assist. So you can be sat in Falmouth co-ordinatng a rescue right over on the other side of the world.’ I was keen to find out how often that kind of rescue occurred.‘It’s not every day that we will co-ordinate, but every day we have an alert from a British ship somewhere around the world, whether it’s a false alarm or a genuine incident.’ So tell me a bit more about your team.‘Well we have the

rescue team, who most people don’t realise are volunteers. They carry pagers so when we get an incident alert they drop what they are doing and carry out their search, patrol or rescue then go back to their day jobs. ‘If people want to volunteer they should look out for notices locally, but also give the Falmouth office a call for more information. ‘There is a fitness test but we can take people from all different backgrounds and all manner of environments. The only necessity is that you are local and are able to attend the majority of incidents.’
Bikinis
What’s the strangest incident you have ever come across? ‘Probably one of the funniest ones was an emergency call about people shouting for help. It turned out to be two women in bikinis who were at a barbecue and had decided to see if their kids’ inflatable bouncy castle floated. So they jumped on it and, of course, not only did it float but rivers move... so they started drifting out towards the sea. ‘Surprisingly enough there was an overwhelming response from all the local emergency services to attend to the two women in bikinis - everybody was available for that one.’ What’s the most frightening rescue you have had to deal with? ‘Well we have had lots of major
incidents, from rescuing 113 people from a burning fishing boat - the Athena - off the Isles of Scilly, to a fire and explosion in a large container ship 1,000 miles out into the Atlantic, which was a worst case senario for us, because it’s within our area but out of reach of lifeboats, helicopters and our direct search and rescue team. ‘People were badly injured and we had to get other ships in the area to help out. So that was a complicated incident. The ship was still on fire and there were people badly injured who weren’t able to reach land for three or four days so that was very difficult. ‘Then you have closer to home incidents that involve fatalities, these are really difficult to deal with too.You have to tell the families what has happened.’ What advice would you give people?
Dogs
‘Have a healthy respect for the sea, it is much colder at this time of year and with the recent storms it is more difficult to get rescued. If you are going out on a ship, wear a life jacket. If you are walking, know the times of the tide and see whether you are going to get cut off. ‘One of the most common things we deal with are people with dogs. People take their dogs on clifftop walks and let them off their leads. The dog runs off, goes over the cliff or gets injured and it’s traumatic for people. Then they tend to try and rescue their animals and put themselves in danger too. We then go out to look after the people involved and their animals. But it’s so easy to prevent this by just not letting your dog off the lead when you are on the cliff path. ‘In here we deal with all sorts, to whale and dolphin strandings to bombs on beaches and old mines to pollution events.’ What is the best thing about your job.‘It has to be that it is so rewarding, you can’t beat that moment when somebody who may not have survived without your help is rescued.’

CLIFF RESCUE: A volunteer scales the cliff and (below) James playing rugby
! S K C O R R E U C RES
IWANTED to find out a bit more about James himself, so it’s time for the questions...
Q What did you want to be when you were younger? A A professional athlete. I used to play a bit of rugby, but the only chance of me being a pro now would be a darts player! Q What are your best qualities? A Good looks and modesty, ha! No patience and perseverance is a big thing here. If we have information about something we will keep going until we have helped in some way. Q What are your worst qualities? A I have to be more tolerant. Q What is your favourite decade and why? A The 90s – I was a young adult working on the beaches, I loved the music, I met my wife and I got this job too. Q What is your favourite thing to do on a day off? A I love surfing on the north coast and getting out and about enjoying the coastline. Q Who is your celebrity crush? A Cameron Diaz. Q Who is your sporting hero?
ON CALL: James at work in the Co-ordination Centre
A I think Martin Johnson was incredible. Q Which person in history would you most like to meet? A WilliamWilberforce, he was responsible for the abolition of slavery. Q If you could witness any event past present or future, what would it be? A The birth of my great great great great grandson. Or the Battle of Hastings - to find out what really happened. Q What’s the first thing you bought with your own money? A Records. I remember at the age ten buying some singles. Q What was your first single? A Gary Newman, Cars. Q Who are your three ideal
dinner party guests? A Jeff Bridges, Muhammad Ali and Joan Rivers. Q If you could have a superpower what would it be? A To fly quickly so I could go anywhere in the world. Q If you could learn anything what would you like to learn? A Guitar. Q What is the most daring or dangerous thing you have done? A I’ve done stupid things that were quite dangerous like surfing in some big waves! Q Do you have a hidden talent? A No. Q What was your favourite film? A The Big Lebowski
Q If you won the Lottery, what is the first thing you would do? A I would buy a place in London so I could go up there for sport and culture. I would also go abroad and I’d watch the Barbados test match! Q What is your most embarrassing moment? A I do a few talks to groups and on one I was 10 minutes late, plugged in my computer, and my battery was flat. Then I couldn’t get the pictures up on screen. I spluttered all the way through it. So out of so many talks I have done - that’s the one that sticks in my mind. Q What is your favourite food? A Pasty, andThai food. Q What sort of music are you in to? A Rock! ACDC, Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Nirvana,The Foo Fighters. Q What’s the most romantic thing you have done for your wife? A Well last year was out 15th anniversary so I took her to Fifteen atWatergate Bay. Q What are your plans for this year? A We are restructuring here so the very first thing I have to do is make sure I have a job here.

LET US PUT A SMILE BACK ON YOUR FACE Patient Comments I am thrilled with the result! You have given me my confidence back and I feel much better about myself
Thanks to your team for the lovely welcome each time I visited and you for understanding and caring chair side manner
ALLOW me to introduce myself, my name is Claire and I am the receptionist at Changing Faces Denture clinic. I am the voice you will hear when you call our clinic which is in a discreet, rural location on the outskirts of St Agnes.
Our patients often talk to me about the problems they are having with their current dental situation, commonly patients have ill-fitting, uncomfortable or unsightly dentures which make it difficult for them to eat or speak properly. My job is to talk to you about your current dental situation and find a time suitable for you to come and have a free consultation with us over a cup of coffee about how we can help you. Some patients visiting our clinic are often very embarrassed about their current dental situation - although there is no need to be - and often speak with their hand covering their mouth. I see a quick change in them after their consultation with Martin Docking our Clinical Dental Technician. They have had the opportunity to discuss their current dental problems with someone who really cares and has listened to their individual needs, leaving our clinic fully informed, however under no obligation.
Comfortable
They are informed about the treatments that are available and are aware that there is a solution to their denture problem. Often they are relieved that they do not have to suffer any longer. During their treatment patients often tell me how comfortable they feel in our clinic and that it doesn’t feel like going to the dentist at all. I personally believe this is because we never rush appointments, patients understand and are confident in the treatment process and know that their bespoke dentures are being made by Martin in our onsite laboratory. During treatment I get to know our patients very well, therefore I’m almost as excited as they are when they arrive for their final appointment. To see a patient who when they first entered our clinic had little self-esteem, leave with confidence and wearing a huge smile is wonderful. Sometimes patients become so emotional they shed a few tears and I get a big hug or I hear them discussing what they would like for supper as they haven’t eaten properly in such a long time. So if you are one of the many full or partial denture wearers who are suffering with ill-fitting, uncomfortable dentures please call me to make a no obligation appointment - 2014 could be your year to smile!
Just a note to say how thrilled I am with my new dentures
My new teeth are so comfortable
I am so pleased I was able to have such great care and attention to detail at Changing Faces

Chocolate Heart Cake Ingredients
Oil or melted butter for greasing 175g/6oz self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 55g/2 oz cocoa powder 3 eggs 140g/5oz light muscovado sugar 150ml/5fl oz sunflower oil 150ml/5 fl oz single cream Fresh mint sprigs to decorate Filling & topping 225g/8 oz plain chocolate 250ml/9fl oz double cream 3 tbsp seedless raspberry jam 200g/7oz fresh or frozen raspberries
Method
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease a 20cm/8 inch heart shape cake tin and line the base with baking paper. Sift the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder into a large bowl. Beat the eggs with sugar, oil and single cream. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the egg mixture, then stir to mix thoroughly, beating to a smooth batter. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake in the preheated oven for 25-30
minutes or until risen and firm to the touch. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out and finish cooling on a wire rack. For the filling and topping, place the chocolate and double cream in a saucepan over a low heat and stir until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until the mixture cools slightly and begins to thicken. Use a sharp knife to cut the cake in half horizontally. Spread the cut surface of each half with the raspberry jam, then top with about 3 tablespoons of the chocolate mixture. Scatter half the raspberries over the base and replace the top, pressing lightly. Spread the remaining mixture over the top and sides of the cake, swirling with a palette knife. Top with raspberries and decorate with mint sprigs.

When did it all start? THERE are various theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 AD. Claudius didn’t want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, he was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor’s daughter, signing it,‘From your Valentine.’ Sound familiar?

See early signs of spring approaching Top 10 February gardening tips
IN February there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and birds and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. There’s plenty to do indoors this month, all in preparation for the season ahead. Outdoors, the garden is coming to life again, and it’s time to prune shrubs, such as Wisteria. Top 10 jobs this month • Prepare vegetable seed beds, and sow some vegetables under cover • Chit potato tubers • Protect blossom on
apricots, nectarines and peaches • Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off • Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering • Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting ‘in the green’ • Prune Wisteria • Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges • Prune conservatory climbers • Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter
3 ways 2... use plastic bottles 1
2
3
To help keep plastic bottles out of the landfill, here are three ways that you can reuse them in your garden. 1. Bottle Carrot Garden By cutting off the top of a bottle, you can add soil and carrots seeds. You won’t have huge yield, but you can get a few carrots from a very tiny space. It is certainly possible. 2. Bottle Hanging Planter Have you ever thought about lining up plastic bottles in a row and planting herbs in them? It’s a great project to work on with kids because you can decorate the bottles together. 3. Self-Watering Bottle Container All you’ll need to create one of these is a plastic bottle and some old cloth for the wick. They are smaller versions of self-watering containers, but just as effective for more shallow root vegetables.

flower of the month
ROSEMARY, or Rosmarinus officinalis, is a woody, perennial herb with fragrant, evergreen, needle-like leaves and white, pink, purple, or blue flowers. It is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae, which includes many other herbs. The name ‘rosemary’ derives from the Latin for ‘dew’ (ros) and ‘sea’ (marinus), or ‘dew of the sea’.

CYCLE MANIA!
THIS year Falmouth is in for another cyclying treat as a event is heading for the Penryn Campus for the second year running.
The Urban Downhill Bicycle Race in Cornwall. will be taking place on Sunday,April 13th. For anybody unfamiliar with this type of event it takes a big, strong, hard, tail or suspension bike and a lot of guts to race down a track which includes steps, jumps and tight turns on a set course of only about 60 seconds through the middle of the university campus. It will be professionally timed and organised through Carrick Riders, your local mountain bike club based in Falmouth. It will be exciting viewing and spectators are welcome to watch and cheer on the competitors for free. There will be PA commentary, food and other entertainment to support the event. Practice will start from 9.30am and the main race will begin at 1pm. This is a properly organised event approved by British Cycling, the
governing body of the sport. The race is open to all categories of rider from junior up to senior and veteran groups. If you need to know more about this event details are available from
the main sponsors: Falmouth Cycles, Tregoniggie Ind Est,contact telephone number:01326 373399.This is a good time for cycling in Falmouth. The Falmouth Bike Hub aims to help develop the growth of cycling.

Often found in contemporary hotels, wet rooms are a trendy way to achieve a streamlined bathroom. But before you remodel your existing bathroom to embrace this open-plan style, consider carefully whether a wet room would make the best use of the space..
What is a wet room?
A wet room is created when the whole bathroom area is tiled or finished in the same material as the shower. There is also no tray so the floor is level with the rest of the room. Often, if the floor area is large enough, there will be no shower enclosure at all and there might not even be bathtub. Why not add some under floor heating, to give a warm feel under foot. Perhaps use a wall hung toilet and basin unit, to give the feeling of a bigger room with everything off the floor.
Is a wet room right for me?
A wet room can be a good way to make the most out of a modestly-sized bathroom as you can fit in all your bathroom components without creating awkward corners that you have to squeeze around.
Sore hips? sore joints?
If getting in and out of the bath is difficult, have you thought about taking the bath out and replacing it with a wet room or shower tray? This process is relatively quick, and would make a huge difference to you, young or old; this form of adaptation is extremely popular. If you are interested in having a free estimate from one of our team, please contact Jo on 01326 379911 or call into the shop.

Page... Paul the Vet’s Pet PHD MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA VETMB
l Has more than 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large anima veterinary practice and is a director of Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd
I HAD a consultation the other day with a client I hadn’t seen for some time, and when I checked the records it was clear that we had not seen them since their pet was a puppy.
Honestly, this is how we wish it was the entire time – healthy pets enjoying a good life, and a few visits to the vet at the end. There are thousands of books on what to do with a new pet, how to train them, how to cope with them, how to choose them, and many of them are useful tools. However, there is very little written about what happens at the other end of the timeline. When we take on a new puppy or kitten it seems almost inconceivable that they won’t be around forever, but in truth, 15 or 16 years is probably about a reasonable life expectancy for a cat, and with dogs the reality is often a lot less. While small breeds of dog like a jack russell or Yorkshire terrier can often live to a ripe old age of around 16 years, larger breeds often don’t manage anything like that and, sadly, the average life span of giant breeds, such as Irish Wolfhounds or Great Danes, can be as little as 4-6 years. Obviously we don’t like to dwell on such things when our pets are young, but old age creeps up very quickly and the prospect of them dying or suffering from debilitating illnesses is something that often has to be addressed. I think I am pretty much right in saying that for most people the idea of dying peacefully at home in our own bed would be the least frightening prospect, and a lot of people I talk to with elderly pets often express the wish that they would come down one morning to find their animal has died in their sleep. That perhaps is the ideal – and one of the great advantages of it is that it ‘lets us off the hook’, so to speak. The prospect of bringing one’s dog or cat to the surgery in order to have their life ended is not a

Have you got brake judder? Let us sort it out with the new Pro-Cut on car brake lathe. How it works!
Wheel Alignment
The Pro-Cut lathe works on the vehicle, by attaching itself directly to the hub. The technology includes an automatic, electronically controlled, gyroscope system which measures run-out in the hub and corrects for this to an accuracy of better than 0.05mm. The automatic surface machining of a disc is completed in around 4
minutes. The complete process takes less then 9 minutes per disc.
We use a John Bean 3D Visualiner that is second to none for setting up the geometry on cars. Whether it’s just the tracking or all the angles on the car that need adjusting, this machine is proven to be one of the most accurate on the market.
We don’t just fit tyres!
We also do EBC Brakes for performance & standard cars. We have a comprehensive stock with hundreds of part numbers available off the shelf.
Tyres: We keep thousands of tyres in stock. If we don’t have what you need we can usually obtain it for next day.
Other Services Puncture Repair, Wheel Balancing. Exide Batteries For cars, boats and commercial applications.
Alloy Wheels many available from stock and most makes available next day.

MORE THAN JUST S L E S E I D Wide range of new services available
INDEPENDENT garage, Falmouth Diesels unlocked its full potential when it joined the Bosch Car Service network, developing the business to cover a wide range of automotive services.
Having started out as specialists in selling diesel cars,as the name suggests,Falmouth Diesels has been able to expand its capabilities since joining the Bosch Car Service network. It can now provide servicing, MOT testing, diagnostics and repairs for all cars, vans and motorbikes, including all petrol vehicles. The company now also specialises in the latest hybrid technologies. As a result of joining the network, the independent garage
has invested greatly in new Bosch workshop equipment, providing both reliability and safety alongside the highest level of service. In addition to a number of Bosch testing and diagnostic tools - including numerous pieces of manufacturer specified equipment, - Falmouth Diesels has recently added a motorbike MOT test bay and is now approved byVOSA as a class 1 & 2 MOT test centre.
Specialist
Now able to develop as a hybrid specialist, the garage can demonstrate how it is at the forefront of the industry when it comes to new and rapidly developing technologies, giving customers the comfort that the BoschTrainedTechnicians have
the knowledge required to service their car,van or motorbike effectively. Falmouth Diesels technicians regularly attend Bosch training courses and,as a result, have two fully trained Bosch Diagnostic Technicians on site.By being able to demonstrate that staff have received training above and beyond that of many other independent garages,Falmouth Diesels is able to offer a genuine, value alternative to a main dealer. Mark Fernihough, director of Falmouth Diesels, has overseen the full transition of the garage and commented: ‘Being a member of the Bosch Car Service network has enabled us to take the business forward in ways we wouldn’t have been able to before.
‘Even though we began as diesel car sales specialists, the name now means so much more than that. Our workshop specialises in all engines, petrol, diesel and all upcoming technologies, such as hybrid vehicles.’ All Bosch Car Service garages are members of theTrading Standards Institute approved customer code and have access to the leading technology in the industry developed by Bosch. These two factors together can reassure customers that the service they receive from Falmouth Diesels will compete with any alternative local garage. For more information on Falmouth Diesels and the range of services they offer visit www.falmouthdiesels.co.uk or phone 01326 210773.

‘ We work hard to be a female friendly garage and we’ll never overcharge, patronise or sell women anything they don’t need’
The UK motor industry is held in low esteem by many motorists, especially women drivers, after bad experiences in garages, dealers and new car dealerships alike. We hear stories about women being charged more than TEAM: New S ES R men, indifferent customer service, shoddy garage XP E JOINING TH workmanship, the use of baffling jargon and a tendency to aron Gribble Sh r be em m f staf patronise females despite the importance of their custom. With a large percentage of our customers being female here at Xpress there is such a thing as female friendly garage and while this won't be at the top of your shopping list, when the time is right, a genuinely good garage makes all the difference! Not intended to be sexist, we have simply set the bar for females because you are professional and increasingly independent shoppers who know what you want, are used to getting it and go elsewhere when you aren't happy. Having left this area to men for too many years, we have realised that the time has come to invest and become more female friendly than all the others.
Claire Wylie from Penryn said: ‘What every woman wants from a garage! 1st time visit. A friend recommended Xpress as I had been very unhappy with a previous garage. I have visited this garage several times now. They are always honest and not patronising. It is nice to be treated as an intelligent woman, rather than someone who knows nothing about cars.’
