D N A H G N I P HEL Massages aim to raise vital funds for Lioness Cubs Orphanage, Kenya

WHILE talking to Lexie Hearley owner ofTava Beauty &Tanning in Falmouth, theWave team discovered that she does a lot of charity work for an orphanage in Kenya... so we decided to find out more!

We asked Lexie how she became involved in this worthwhile cause. She said:‘I am a trustee for the Lioness Cubs Home in Kikimbala, Mombasa. I have been working with the home for the past 6 years now. ‘We are a small home with currently 17 orphaned, abandoned and abused children aging from 1 to16 years old,. ‘The purpose of the home is to provide a loving, safe and secure environment for the children, and to give them a future they may never have otherwise had. ‘Many of our children have HIV, and these children face the hardest struggles imaginable, they are abandoned by their families, often beaten, sometimes murdered because of the HIV. And many orphanages will not even take them in because of the extra costs an HIV child incurs, due to the medication they require and special provisions that need to be made for them. ‘Our home relies solely on donations, sponsorship, fundraising and our

volunteer programme to keep going, and to provide basic items such as food, shelter, clothing and medication. ‘This is why we are holding a fundraising charity massage day atTava on Friday, February 7, to raise vital funds for our children. We will be carrying out back, neck and shoulder massages for free but asking for a minimum donation of £10 towards the orphanage. If you would like to book yourself a massage call 01326 211911. Lexie then went on to tell us a bit more about the work the orphanage does. She said:‘It is important to us that all the children attend school and gain an education. In addition, the home provides employment for a small number of staff, which in turn enables them to support their respective families. As you can imagine the costs for running the home do not come cheap and it is a day to day struggle which is why we are desperately looking for people who may be in a position to fundraise and spread the word.’ ‘While I am in Kenya I will also be helping at the weekly feeding station. I will be taking out items that have been kindly donated to me at the salon for the home and surrounding villages such as Calpol, paracetamol, plasters, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, clothes, sanitary pads, pens, pencils and shoes.’

‘My life has been about taking risks’

MARY Gander was born and brought up on a farm in Buckinghamshire with her parents and four older brothers and sisters.‘It was great fun growing up on the farm, I had a great childhood,’ she said.

Being one of five, you can only imagine the type of things they all got up to! Mary added: ‘I am definitely the bossiest out of all of us.’ After education an adventurous 21-year-old Mary trained in complementary therapies before travelling in Australia, New Zealand and Bermuda. ‘All I ever wanted to do was to travel, so I saved all my pennies and sold everything I owned to get to Australia. I absolutely loved it, and was not afraid of doing any old job to get some money. I had some very scary but fun moments.’ During her travels Mary was lucky enough to work in a Bermuda spa. She said: ‘I met some brilliant people who I still keep in touch with today. We worked hard but played harder – such good times.’ Mary and her husband Paul met at secondary school, but their budding romance wasn’t to blossom for a few years. ‘I was the studious one and he was one of those rowdy boys at the back of the class. I used to think he was so annoying,’ Mary said. Soon after Mary’s return from her travels, the couple’s paths were due to cross again... ‘We were both in the pub – aged 24 – he was with his girlfriend and I was with my boyfriend. He was still very loud but not as irritating. We both attended the same ball, he came up to me looking very dashing and asked me if I wanted to dance. I refused him at least two or three times. Finally when he had enough I was dragged to the dance floor. And that was it really,’ said Mary, and the couple have not looked back. They have two children

By Student Journalist JAMIE-ANN WALL Benjamin (22) and Livvy (18), by the sounds of things they have both adopted the family’s creative gene! ‘Ben is doing a degree in architecture and is currently working in London for a year, at the Pinewood Studios.Whereas Livvy is in her first year at NottinghamTrent University studying Fashion Promotion and Communication, she is absolutely loving it. So the house has been very quiet since September.’ In 1996 Mary and Paul made the bold choice to move their family to Cornwall. ‘We always used to come down to Cornwall on our holidays and thought it was so special. When Paul was offered a job we just thought why not? And it is such a lovely county in which to bring up a family.’

Move

At the this time in Mary’s life, the move to Cornwall seemed to be the right thing for her young family and grieving husband whose mum had passed away prior to their move. Their families thought they were mad for leaving ‘beautiful’ Buckinghamshire in search for a new life down south. ‘So we came down in our little cars, with next to nothing, bouncing down the motorway thinking were mad,’ adds Mary, she still giggles with excitement over the thought of it. ‘We look back and smile about our decision and think a little bit crazy but the best choice.’ Mary had worked in complementary therapies for more than 20 years. On their arrival in Cornwall she was offered the opportunity to developTruro College’s ComplementaryTherapy department. Her previous experience included seven years of dedicated hard work at Milton Keynes College, setting up its complementary therapy department.

SISTERS: Tricia and Mary in Sweet Pea & Betty

She said:‘I loved it, did it for a long time, travelled a lot with the job, which was fun.’ Sadly in 2005 one of Mary’s sisters died suddenly of a heart attack aged only 46. Mary added: ‘You get to the stage – especially with my sister tragically dying and other family bereavements – where you evaluate your life and where you’re going. ‘I used to talk to my other sisterTricia and say wouldn’t it be lovely to something creative? Tricia has always been into antiques for a number of years, she loves chandeliers, mirrors and jewellery. ‘We used to joke about starting something up together, and then one of the times I was visiting her in Buckinghamshire we decided to go into town and have a coffee and look around the shops, one of them being Fair Lilly. Inside they were doing a workshop with the Annie Sloan paints. When we came outside I looked at my sister and went there you see we can do something like that!’

That was the moment Mary began to see the type of shop her andTricia could perfectly run together. On returning to Cornwall Mary noticed the old West Briton office was up for rent, and thought it was a perfect location and price for their own Fair Lilly. ‘I rang up Annie Sloan and by chance she was looking for a stockist in Falmouth, so I hopped about a bit, spoke toTrish and things just started falling into place. All of our family thought we were mad as we had never owned a shop, never sold paint and never been in retail but, of course, we ignored all of their advice and they now look at us and smile.’ From the word go Mary and Tricia wanted to do something positive that showed off their creative side and bring a new lease of life to Falmouth. Not only does the shop hold beautiful hidden treasures, it also allows people to go in and experiment with all the arty goodies in Mary’s fabulous workshops.

Mary’s family: Husband Paul, daughter Livvy and son Benjamin and Mary (right) with her little dog

E F I L L U F R U C‘WhOen LlifeOgets blurry - adjust your focus!’ AS you can see Mary has had quite a colourful life, so let’s see what else she is willing to share...

Q What did you want to be when you were younger? A Well I think it was probably to go into nursing, I love the human body and learning about anatomy. Q What drives you to succeed? A I have to be very enthusiastic about what I am doing and providing for my family. Q What are your best qualities? A I asked my daughter this and she said it has got to be my baking and I absolutely love it. Q What are your worst qualities? A Oh I am very bossy. Q What is your favourite decade and why? A Definitely the 90s – I had Livvy when I was 31 and just

really enjoyed the kiddies being little and the move down to Cornwall, happy fun years. Q What is your favourite thing to do on a day off? A It would have to be long coastal walks; I love the walk from Falmouth right round to the Ferry Boat Inn. Q What do you love about Falmouth? A The quirkiness, the town’s energy, the students and the local characters. Q Who is your celebrity crush? A I think Bear Grylls is lovely – I love an action man. Q What the last film,TV show or book that made you cry? A Children in Need. Q What’s the best concert you have ever been to? A Queen and David Bowie Q What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod?

A Oooooh, Dolly Parton, she is my guilty pleasure! Q What couldn’t you leave the house without? A Clearly I have to take lipstick and my mobile phone. Q What’s your top beauty tip? A A regular facial, it’s relaxing and good for your skin. Q Apart from Falmouth, where would you like to live? A I reckon Sydney, Australia. Q What is the most daring or dangerous thing you have done? A Well it has to be a parachute jump, it was terrifying! Q If you could choose to stay a certain age forever which age would it be? A Awww wow, 35. Q What was your favourite food? A It’s got to be a roast dinner and, of course, cake! Q What is one of your favourite quotes?

A ‘When life gets blurry adjust your focus.’ Q What sound do you love? A On a summers day and you can hear the birds and see the sunshine Q If you won the Lottery, what is the first thing you would do? A I would buy a lovely big family home with a sea view. Q What did you do growing up that got you into trouble? A One time my siblings and I were flying a kite on the farm and struck an electrical pole. All of the town’s power was cut and we ended up hiding in a ditch all day! My parents went crazy! Q What’s the best gift you’ve ever given/received? A I think it has to be Benjamin and Livvy, I am so blessed to have them both. Q What does your family call you and think of you? A My children call me monkey and think I am mad for doing things like the London Marathon.

YOUR DENTURE QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED

IF you I currently wear a denture, or you are concerned with your dental health and think that you may need dentures in the future, then you need to know that there are many ways of treating your dental problems.

Martin Docking from Changing Faces Denture Clinic, Cornwall, invite you for a free consultation so you can get all the advice you need to give the best solution for you. Before you visit, here Martin will answer some of the questions that you might be considering.

Why do people need dentures?

Teeth can be lost due to a variety of reasons like decay, gum disease, injury, neglect, medical and congenital problems.Without teeth, people have a difficult time eating and choosing their diet carefully, and their face appears sunken giving them an ‘old’ appearance when speaking and smiling. This results in a loss of self-esteem and confidence. Dentures can help reverse this.

I am anxious about visiting the dentist, why are you different?

Don't worry, we are a Denture Clinic only, not a dental practice. The clinic is set in a discrete location, where you will be greeted by Claire. Once you are settled and comfortable with a cup of tea or coffee, you will be invited to the clinic to meet Martin.

What can I expect?

Martin will introduce himself and ask you what it is that concerns you about your dental situation. Once you are relaxed, Martin will have a look in your mouth using just a mirror, it is completely painless, so no need to concern yourself. He will carefully assess your situation and discuss your case with you.

Complete denture with natural set up and gum tinting

How will dentures affect my appearance?

Your new dentures will improve the look of your smile and help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. We encourage you to bring old photographs of your smile or a picture of a smile you like, in order that we can replicate the smile you want.

D e n t u re s ? there’s n o n e e d to worry

“I feel so much more confident about smiling, speaking and eating” Jenny

Do you long for dentures that fit securely, are comfortable & look natural? You’re not asking too much!

What options are available?

Martin will show you examples of any proposed treatments and explain the pros and cons; the costs; the timings; and what you should expect during the procedure appointments. You have no obligation to proceed. If you wear complete dentures (replacing all the teeth), there are two options.... BPS dentures if you have good ridges to retain the dentures. These have great aesthetics and comfort. Swiss Dentures if you have flat ridges, these are the most stable dentures available, giving great aesthetics and incredible function. If you need partial dentures (replacing one or more teeth) there are two options.... A conventional plastic denture giving a secure aesthetic solution A delicate metal denture. These are very light, delicate and a delight to wear with the best in aesthetics and stability.

Keep the birds fed through cold winter Top 10 January gardening tips

IN January, your garden could need protecting from frosts, gale-force winds and heavy rain. Check stakes, ties, fleeces and other supports for damage and consider moving plants to sunnier positions to maximise light. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, food is scarce for them over winter. Top 10 jobs this month • Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch • Ventilate the greenhouse on sunny days

• Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already • Repair and re-shape lawn edges • Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out • Prune apple and pear trees • Start forcing rhubarb • Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season • Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds • Prepare a polythene shelter for outdoor peaches and nectarines, to protect them from peach leaf curl

3 ways 2... design with pots 1

2

3

1. Create a vignette A triangle always works. Containers can be grouped into vignettes the same way plants can. A triangular arrangement of pots will produce quick, pleasing results. In design terms, a triangle consists of a dominant central element flanked by components of smaller stature. Allow one pot to dominate - a container grouping will quickly fall into place if the tallest element is placed at the rear of the composition. 2. Add focal points The purpose of a focal point is to attract attention. If you are burdened with an area where nothing adequately does this job, a container will quickly fill the void. 3. Break up wall space The rigid, repetitive pattern of a brick wall can be tiring on the eye. But when blurred by lush masses of foliage and colorful flowers, the lines of mortar recede.

HELLEBORES (sometimes known as the Christmas or Lenten rose) are perennial garden plants with elegant flowers, perfect for brightening up shady areas during late winter and early spring. Some species are grown for their striking evergreen architectural foliage.

COMMEMORATIVE WWI BEER LAUNCH

FOLLOWING a successful first year of trading, Penryn-based Granite Rock Brewery and Home Brew Supplies (GRB) will be launching a new beer to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War next year. Penryn Company takes inspiration from the local people who enlisted in the war effort between 1914 and 1918, many of whom died on the Front Line. Individual photographs of local servicemen have been used in the set of four labels, each one depicting the name and rank of its subject, on a background of

Penryn town centre as it looked in the early 1900s. The beer, sold from the brewery premises in Penryn, will be sold in support of various charities dedicated to helping the families and veterans of war. Granite Rock Brewery has always had local themes and ideas at the heart of its philosophy. Glasney College Porter, a firm favourite with regular customers of GRB, takes its name from the highly influential institution set up in Penryn in 1265 by Bishop Bronescombe. Another beer, a bitter named Bronescombe’s Vision, is based on the

hallucinations that led the bishop to establish the ecclesiastical college. ‘We want to emphasise the region’s historical identity with a range of beers that people from all over could enjoy and connect with’, says Frances Williams, GRB’s co-Director. ‘The fact that we also supply everything you need to start brewing your own beer or wine at home really cements our commitment to keeping it local.’ The Porter was a sell-out in Falmouth’s recent autumn Beer Festival, and is also available from The Front in Falmouth.

Set up early in 2013, Granite Rock Brewery and Home Brew Supplies provides an informal and friendly atmosphere to chat about beers and the making process, learn new techniques, and sample current works in progress. Quickly establishing itself as the region’s leading supplier of home-brew equipment, ingredients and advice, GRB continues to develop its micro-brewery products. They are open MondaySaturday 9-5, with monthly events featuring demonstrations and discussions on home-brewing.

Often found in contemporary hotels, wet rooms are a trendy way to achieve a streamlined bathroom. But before you remodel your existing bathroom to embrace this open-plan style, consider carefully whether a wet room would make the best use of the space..

What is a wet room?

A wet room is created when the whole bathroom area is tiled or finished in the same material as the shower. There is also no tray so the floor is level with the rest of the room. Often, if the floor area is large enough, there will be no shower enclosure at all and there might not even be bathtub. Why not add some under floor heating, to give a warm feel under foot. Perhaps use a wall hung toilet and basin unit, to give the feeling of a bigger room with everything off the floor.

Is a wet room right for me?

A wet room can be a good way to make the most out of a modestly-sized bathroom as you can fit in all your bathroom components without creating awkward corners that you have to squeeze around.

Sore hips? sore joints?

If getting in and out of the bath is difficult, have you thought about taking the bath out and replacing it with a wet room or shower tray? This process is relatively quick, and would make a huge difference to you, young or old; this form of adaptation is extremely popular. If you are interested in having a free estimate from one of our team, please contact Jo on 01326 379911 or call into the shop.

while every day. They need sunlight to produce vitamin D. Whatever the size of the hutch, rabbits need exercise and the safest way to achieve this is by using a run. However, the run must be escape - and predator - proof as well as providing shelter. The run should be moved daily so that the rabbit has fresh grass to nibble. Make sure that the grass has not been treated with weed-killer or any other harmful substance. The run should only be used for day-time exercise and the rabbit placed back into its hutch at night. Ensure that other pets are not able to frighten the rabbit. Cats appear to love to use runs as a resting place and are greatly entertained by the stress of the occupant. Also bear in mind that rabbits love to dig - so make sure they can’t dig out from under the run and escape. The benefits of pet ownership have been known for a long time so let’s look after them as well.

Wheel Alignment

The Pro-Cut lathe works on the vehicle, by attaching itself directly to the hub. The technology includes an automatic, electronically controlled, gyroscope system which measures run-out in the hub and corrects for this to an accuracy of better than 0.05mm. The automatic surface machining of a disc is completed in around 4

We use a John Bean 3D Visualiner that is second to none for setting up the geometry on cars. Whether it’s just the tracking or all the angles on the car that need adjusting, this machine is proven to be one of the most accurate on the market.
