GOLFING FAMILY: Steve with his two younger brothers David & Jonathan on the golf course

Meet Steve - always the practical joker

I HAD heard a lot of things about Steve Burrows, so I was excited to meet the man behind the stories. Practical jokes aside, it is clear to see that Steve is the guy with a big heart and even bigger laugh!

Steve was originally born in Manchester before moving to St Ives when he was five, after his father had left the Army and decided to start up his own building company. In 1963 Steve started boarding atTruro School and, upon leaving, he joined Lloyds bank in 1969, where he stayed for slightly less than 30 years. ‘I was a manager for Lloyds Bank inTruro in 1991 and then took over as the manager of the Falmouth group of branches in 1993. ‘I had many good times at the bank – lots of funny memories – and I met some lovely people.’ Steve met his wife Ann in 1971, when they both worked at Lloyds Bank, Helston. They were married in 1972 and haven’t looked back since. ‘We’re really good friends and we laugh every day. We celebrated our Ruby wedding last year, which was lovely. As a belated treat I took Ann to Wimbledon this July. I managed to get tickets to see Andy Murray win the final – it was absolutely brilliant. I also met Ainsley Harriet. ‘In 1997 I had quite a serious

By Student Journalist JAMIE-ANN WALL accident. I was playing in a bank meeting at Carlyon Bay golf course when I was struck just below the temple by a golf ball. ‘Luckily a good friend Jim Armstrong ran the length of the course, in the pouring rain, and called the Cornwall Air Ambulance, which probably saved my life. (I am still buying beer for him to this day!).’ This accident was a real turning point in Steve’s life. After five months off, he went back to work at the bank – but the accident had made him take stock of his life and he realised he wanted a change. Being too young for a pension, he decided that he needed to find a new career. ‘A friend of mine owned a company called Brewers in Helston, which dealt with printing, stationery and office furniture. He asked me if I would be interested in heading up the sales team. I knew nothing about printing or stationery but I knew about managing people and getting the best out of them – they are, by far, the most important thing – so I took up the challenge and stayed for seven years!’ Steve started playing golf at West Cornwall Golf Club at the age of 12 and his father Charlie was captain of the club in 1971.

‘Dad always told me that if I ever got the chance to be captain to take it on but always do it for the right reasons.’ In 2004 Steve became captain of Falmouth Golf Club and became friends with David Hughes, who had just purchased the club. In 2007 Steve joined David as a director and has been running the club ever since. ‘It’s an exciting time at the moment; we have just received the planning for a new club house and we have a super membership. ‘There is a lovely mix of people here and there is always a great atmosphere. I could write a book about what goes on; it would be as funny as anything.’ Anyone who has ever worked

for Steve will know how understanding and considerate he can be. He couldn’t emphasise enough how much he loves and appreciates all of his staff at the golf club. They have even introduced him the world of touch screen phones! ‘It’s much easier to have that pint half full and help people on their way. I like giving people a helping hand and try to open that door for them.’ Steve has two younger brothers David and Jonathan, both builders. ‘Along with Ann they’re my best friends. Jonathan was the best golfer of all of us with a handicap of six. David and his wife, Karina, have just had a baby boy, Beau. He’s a little beauty – I’m sure he’ll run me ragged and keep me young in years to come!’

STAR ENCOUNTER: Steve meets Ainsley at Wimbledon

! S G E L N E E R G Y M ’ it m er K e m ed ll ca s d n ie fr y m y h w t u o ‘Find

LET’S see what else this golfing gent has to reveal about himself...

Q What did you want to be when you were younger? A I wanted to go into acting; I used to be in school plays. But then I went into banking! Q What are your best qualities? A I think I’m kind, I empathise with people and I like to help and encourage wherever possible. Q What do you most dislike? A I can’t stand bullies of any kind, they are just cowards and they make people’s lives a misery. Online bullying has become prevalent recently and needs stamping on hard to put a stop to it. Q What is your favourite decade and why? A Ummm, I think probably the 70s. I met Ann and we got married, they were good days, pretty wild but good fun. I don’t know how I survived! Q What is your favourite thing to do on a day off? A I just like to spend time pootling around in the garden or doing a crossword with Ann. It’s nice just shutting that door, getting into old clothes and getting away from everything. Q What do you love about Falmouth? A It’s diverse, it’s got a bit of everything and I feel comfy here. Q Who’s your celebrity crush?

A That’s easy actually, Michelle Pfeiffer, she always been lovely. Q Who would you invite to your ideal dinner party, dead or alive? A Well, I would invite Ian Hislop as I think he is very clever; Steve Delaney who plays Count Arthur Strong and Michael McIntyre because I think he’s funny. I’d try and tell them some jokes they don’t know! Q What is the most daring or dangerous thing you have ever done? A I once ate an After Eight mint at a quarter to seven (we both laugh). Q If you won the lottery what would you buy? A I would pay off family debts, give some to good causes and I would keep my promise of giving all of my staff a cheque each! Q What was the lastTV show, movie or sporting event that made you cry? A Events on news often bring a lump to my throat. I’m reading It Could HappenToYou by Helen Newlove at the moment. Her husband, Gary, was murdered by yobs when he tried to stop them vandalising his car. It is sad but very moving. Q What was the first thing you bought with your own money? A Probably matches actually, or stink bombs! A practical joke of some sort. Q So what is the best practical

joke you have ever played? A Too many to list here but I remember once when I was working in the bank, one chap used to always have a hardboiled egg with his lunch, so I swapped it for a normal one. When he went to crack it, it went everywhere! Safe to say he never had eggs for lunch again! Q Do you have a hidden talent? A I wish I did! I have been trying to play the guitar for 40 years. I have got to do it before I eventually die. I’m not bad at snooker – I played two frames against Alex Higgins in the 70s. The first frame wasn’t bad, a black ball game, but in the second I broke off, sat down and only got up again to shake hands – he cleared the table in around six minutes – brilliant! Q What is your favourite food? A Don’t ask my staff, they think I eat all sorts of weird things! To be honest I like roasts and my wife’s stew. Q If you could live anywhere in the world, apart from Falmouth where would it be? A Ann and I go on lots of these little Euro city breaks by train as we enjoy train travel. It would be nice, when I retire, to see more of the rest of the world. Q Blondes or Brunettes? A Both – but I married a brunette! Q What films do you enjoy?

A I enjoy comedies likeTrains, Planes & Automobiles and Meet the Parents (Robert De Niro is brilliant in it) but I also like a good thriller, Leon for example, and the kid in me enjoys cartoons like Despicable Me and Shrek. A mixed bag really! Q Do you listen to the radio? A I have been an avid Archers fan for about 30 years. That one and a quarter hours in Ambridge on a Sunday morning is a must! I also really enjoy a good story on the radio. It is nice to be read too – perhaps I’m entering second childhood! Q What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you? A Oh no, so many! I remember once playing a round of golf wearing a new pair of dark green trousers. Half way through the round the heavens opened so by the time I got back to the clubhouse I was soaked through. When I took off my trousers my legs were bright green! The dye didn’t come out for about a fortnight and I got called Kermit in the changing room for months afterwards. Very embarrassing! Q What’s next for Steve Burrows? A I would like to retire in the next few years to do some more travelling... and to learn to play that guitar!

IT’S TIME TO GET SET, GO! Get in gear before you can travel

WHEN people look back at the distance travelled in their lives, they refer to it as their journey. No two journeys will ever be exactly the same.

Now I’m not a gambler but if I were, I would bet that all the journeys have one thing in common: obstacles along the way. How we deal with obstacles is what ultimately shapes our characters. So how doYOU deal with obstacles? Give up straightaway? Make an effort to overcome but give up when it becomes more difficult? Or do you keep trying until the obstacle is a thing of the past? In the health and fitness world, we must have heard about every single obstacle to exercising on the planet. No time. No money. Too tired.Too fat.Too thin.Too embarrassed.Too scared. Are these starting to sound like the excuses they are yet? If you imagine jumping in a car to start your journey to your fitness world, you’d first need to think about your destination. (SatnavTR11 3QA if you don’t have time to read any further!) But seriously, what’s your goal? Be realistic. If it’s taken you 20 years to create the spare tyre which is more like a tractor tyre, it’s not really going to disappear after a month of doing two sessions in the gym followed by a beer when you get home! Strive for progress, not perfection. If you’re driving from the UK to Portugal, your first stop is the ferry. It’s a manageable goal. Then look towards your next goal. As fitness Professionals we can help you with goal setting and create personal training plans for the gym. We also have the knowledge and motivation to get

you to each goal, with the extra option of personal training if needed. What speed are you travelling at? That’s up to you as you’re in the driving seat. Let’s face it, no matter how slow and steady you go, you’ll still be lapping the people dormant on their sofas. You don’t have to go fast, you just have to GO. When exercising with weights, the slower movements reap the greatest rewards. Our new Plate loaded Smiths Machine can help you with maintaining the correct form and it’s really easy to use. Are you stuck on a roundabout? Most people at one stage in their lives will have succeeded in

losing a bit of weight and getting more toned. Then you don’t bother to exercise. A FEW weeks ago we had some holidaymakers call the practice. As a Cornish veterinary hospital we get our fair share of holidaymakers in the summer and usually they are dog related, occasionally cat related, sometimes even horse related, but even we were surprised by this call.

I am sure that some of you will have noticed that the alignment is not absolutely perfect and true. You’d be correct – but sometimes in orthopaedics you only really get one shot at it and when the bones are so tiny you have do what you can. At points you will see the bone is only 3mm across. So actually it is a pretty impressive bit of surgery. The bones were sufficiently aligned to ensure that they would start to grow together. To help Happy Feet recover he was put in our small incubator to keep warm. Within a few hours Happy Feet was eating again and bearing weight on his leg. He was sent home from the hospital with a note to his own vet in Derby to X-ray again in four weeks and see how the healing was progressed – if all was well then the pins could be removed. On Friday last week, Happy Feet had his pins removed and is now fully recovered and at home with his owner and able to stand on his own two feet.

angles and then you join a third metal pin to those two and it should be as close to parallel to the actual bone, this means the stress on the bone is removed and passed to the metal pins on the outside of the leg. I hope you are still with me here but that is as technical as it gets. The skill is in actually doing it not just talking about it! Hopefully the X-rays will explain it better. Here you can see the Intra Medullary bone pin (the one running from top to bottom) and the start of the ex-fix is being created. And above is the finished job with all the ends trimmed off. The funny blobs you can see outside Happy Feet are a fasthardening putty that will hold all the pins in place – often with larger animals we will use special clamps but an eightweek-old African grey is just too small to be able to do that and the clamps would be too heavy You then have to close the wounds you have made in the skin to get the pins in with a very fine HAPPY Feet is fully recovered at home suture material.

FILM REVIEW REEL 1: Free Birds

IN this irreverent, hilarious, adventurous buddy comedy, directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!), two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the holiday menu for good. Release Date: 1st November 2013

REEL 2: Last Vegas

THE ensemble comedy follows four old friends who decide to throw a Las Vegas bachelor party for the only one of them who has remained single. Last Vegas is being produced by Laurence Mark (Julie & Julia, Dreamgirls) and Amy Baer. Nathan Kahane and Lawrence Grey are serving as executive producers. Good Universes Matt Leonetti is co-producing. Release Date: 8th November 2013

REEL 3: Saving Mr. Banks

WHEN Walt Disney’s daughters begged him to make a movie of their favourite book, PL Travers’ Mary Poppins, he made them a promise – one that he didn’t realise would take him 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights,Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short,Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation. For those two short weeks in 1961,Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers,Walt launches an all-out onslaught on PL Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history. Release Date: 29th November 2013

Often found in contemporary hotels, wet rooms are a trendy way to achieve a streamlined bathroom. But before you remodel your existing bathroom to embrace this open-plan style, consider carefully whether a wet room would make the best use of the space..

What is a wet room?

A wet room is created when the whole bathroom area is tiled or finished in the same material as the shower. There is also no tray so the floor is level with the rest of the room. Often, if the floor area is large enough, there will be no shower enclosure at all and there might not even be bathtub. Why not add some under floor heating, to give a warm feel under foot. Perhaps use a wall hung toilet and basin unit, to give the feeling of a bigger room with everything off the floor.

Is a wet room right for me?

A wet room can be a good way to make the most out of a modestly-sized bathroom as you can fit in all your bathroom components without creating awkward corners that you have to squeeze around.

Sore hips? sore joints?

If getting in and out of the bath is difficult, have you thought about taking the bath out and replacing it with a wet room or shower tray? This process is relatively quick, and would make a huge difference to you, young or old; this form of adaptation is extremely popular. If you are interested in having a free estimate from one of our team, please contact Jo on 01326 379911 or call into the shop.

Have you got brake judder? Let us sort it out with the new Pro-Cut on car brake lathe. How it works!

Wheel Alignment

The Pro-Cut lathe works on the vehicle, by attaching itself directly to the hub. The technology includes an automatic, electronically controlled, gyroscope system which measures run-out in the hub and corrects for this to an accuracy of better than 0.05mm. The automatic surface machining of a disc is completed in around 4

minutes. The complete process takes less then 9 minutes per disc.

We use a John Bean 3D Visualiner that is second to none for setting up the geometry on cars. Whether it’s just the tracking or all the angles on the car that need adjusting, this machine is proven to be one of the most accurate on the market.

We don’t just fit tyres!

We also do EBC Brakes for performance & standard cars. We have a comprehensive stock with hundreds of part numbers available off the shelf.

Tyres: We keep thousands of tyres in stock. If we don’t have what you need we can usually obtain it for next day.

Other Services Puncture Repair, Wheel Balancing. Exide Batteries For cars, boats and commercial applications.

Alloy Wheels many available from stock and most makes available next day.
