Donate to Lismore's official Flood Fund Lismore City Council has established a Flood Fund to assist victims of the flood. This is the official Flood Fund for Lismore that can be found on our website www.lismore.nsw.gov.au Council has become aware that numerous people have established GoFundMe campaigns to help flood victims. While many of these have been set up with the best of intentions, Council can not verify donated monies will be used to help flood victims. To ensure donations reach the people they are intended for, and that you do not become a victim of a scam, we ask everyone to only donate to the official Lismore Flood Fund. Lismore Flood Fund granted ATO tax deductibility The Lismore Flood Fund has reached another milestone with the Australian Tax Office (ATO) granting the fund tax deductibility status. This means that everyone who has made a donation to the Lismore City Council Flood Appeal fund can now claim the donated amount as a tax deduction. To receive a tax receipt for all donations already made, and for any future donations, donors can use an online form to request a receipt from Council that will allow them to claim the deduction. The Lismore Flood Fund has now raised more than $1.1 million from donations received from across Australia and overseas. Council has started the process to determine how these funds will be allocated by establishing a Flood Fund Committee. The Flood Fund Committee will include all Councillors, as well as Council staff and community representatives. Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg said Council receiving tax deductibility means Council can focus on the next important steps - the distribution of donations. “The response to our Flood Fund Appeal has been overwhelming with donations coming in from all over the country, and now everyone can claim their donation as a tax deduction,” he said. “This now means our Flood Fund Committee can continue to build a clear and transparent process for funds to be allocated in a timely way,” he said. “We’ve been very careful in how we’ve set up our Fund, so that we can build the best process for distributing the donations we have received. “Under our Fund Rules, we can not only support those directly impacted by the natural disaster, but also to consider help boost the amazing work being done by community groups working on the ground.” Council will continue to update our community with the latest Fund news and announcements. Music promoter Michael Chugg said he was horrified by the mind-blowing mess left by the recent floods and welcomed the opportunity to pull together a free concert for the community. The project reunites Chugg and Pope, who together powered the Wave Aid (2005), Live Earth (2007) and the Sydney leg of the Sound Relief (2009) benefit concerts.
"It's really a thank you to the people of Lismore for everything that they've had to put up with, everything that we've got to put up with in the future as well." Mr Chugg said concerts were not cheap endeavours, so it was a huge win to have the funding and support to run an event that could offer free tickets to so many flood-affected residents.

“About a week after the second flood hit us on March 30, I was talking with Council staff about what we could do to lift community spirits,” Krieg comments. “What we needed was a line in the sand moment that would mark a shift in the community’s mood of shock to begin the long hard road of rebuilding and restoring our homes and our community.” One of Council’s team reached out to Rick Sleeman, director of Sports Marketing Australia, and the call was put in to Chugg.

STARTING THE DISCUSSION: HOW TO BUILD BACK BETTER The natural disaster that hit Lismore on 28 February and the flood in March 2022 caused untold physical, social and emotional damage to communities in the affected areas. Lives were lost, hundreds of millions of dollars of critical infrastructure was damaged, thousands of people were made homeless and thousands of businesses were impacted. With rising temperatures predicted to significantly increase the likelihood of more frequent and heavier rain events leading to more frequent and severe flooding, Lismore is facing some big decisions about rebuilding and future growth. Lismore City Council has released a discussion paper that presents some broad brushstrokes for how Lismore can build back better. Some of the options identified include: A planned retreat of the most high flood risk areas of North and South Lismore. Council will advocate for a State and Federal Government funded land swap arrangement to allow residents to move to higher ground but remain close to existing social networks and jobs. Protection of the CBD and land on the eastern side of the Wilsons River through flood mitigation measures. Investigations into expanding the industrial precinct at Goonellabah. Preliminary design and feasibility work to establish whether a new commercial or mixed-use precinct could be located on the golf course land at East Lismore. New medium density zoning and increased height controls for strategically located flood-free sites. Ensuring affordable housing is included as part of Lismore’s growth by introducing an Affordable Housing Contributions Scheme (AHCS) for all land identified for future residential rezoning or a change in LEP controls to allow for greater density. An AHCS is a mechanism in the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act that allows Council to collect developer contributions for the purpose of providing new affordable housing. Review of the Infrastructure Delivery program to identify measures to fast-track infrastructure to new land releases outside of flood affected areas. Lismore City Council’s General Manager John Walker said now is the time for the community to have their say in how we plan for Lismore’s future. “This discussion paper will be out there for six weeks and we encourage businesses, landowners and the general community to have a look and to gives us their feedback,” he said. Bundjalung Country The Koori Mail newspaper has published two editions on April 20 and Wed 4th May, following two major floods in Lismore. Production of the newspaper was put on hold as the newspaper’s office in Molesworth Street, Lismore, was extensively damaged by flood waters. In the weeks following the first flood, general manager Naomi Moran has coordinated a relief centre, assisted by Koori Mail staff and hundreds of volunteers, that has assisted both Aboriginal and nonAboriginal residents of the Bundjalung nation in the Northern Rivers region of New
On March 30th, the relief centre, which provides food, clothing, medical care and other essentials, had to be quickly packed up as a second major flood hit the city of Lismore. The volunteers are back on deck assisting the city and surrounds.

OLLIE- (LISMORE FLOOD VICTIM) A few weeks ago I purchased toys in Sydney to donate to children in Lismore who have lost everything in the flood…. I wanted the firetruck to go to a child who really needed it and would love it. Ollie’s mum contacted me and shared her story, of how she, her husband, Ollie and their 6-month-old daughter were rescued by boat and kayaks in the first big flood.
In the end, the crews gave him the firetruck and he is now at home I am told playing with it. To see him smile so much today and laugh as he played with water was amazing.

Construction of the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is back on track and remains on schedule for completion by December, despite the impact of the recent floods. Workers from construction company Hazell Bros Group have returned to the rail trail sites after spending 6 weeks supporting the enormous flood clean-up in the Tweed.
The company made a significant contribution to the Tweed’s flood clean-up, diverting a fleet of 16 trucks, 5 excavators, 5 bobcats and up to 50 workers to work 6 days per week at Tumbulgum, Condong, Uki, Bray Park, Dulguigan, Tyalgum, Chillingham and South Murwillumbah. Scott Morrison wants the election to be about competence, but an examination of his record suggests that he is not capable of delivering good government.
Scott Morrison has never had a policy agenda. Rather he sees his role as reacting to and resolving problems as they arise, and not setting a policy reform agenda.
Consequently, Morrison is seeking to make the forthcoming election purely a choice based on who is the more competent to manage the government of the country. As Morrison put it: “This election is a choice between a government that you know and has been delivering and a Labor opposition that you don’t.”
But how competent is the Morrison Government really? How well has it in fact been delivering? There are in fact a stack of good reasons that lead to the conclusion that Morrison has repeatedly failed to deliver good government.

Trust
Climate Change
First, and very importantly, there is the question of trust. Good government depends upon people being able to trust that government. But we know, thanks to many of Morrison’s political colleagues, that even they do not trust Scott Morrison.
Turning to what the Government has actually achieved, for many people the most important problem for governments to tackle is climate change. Morrison is priding himself on announcing a commitment to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, but that is just it. It is an announcement and not a policy.
Secrecy Second, there is Morrison’s fetish about secrecy. The Hawke Government understood that it is impossible to successfully pursue a reform agenda without popular support, and this in turn is dependent on persuading people by making information available regarding the performance of the government and its programs.
But the Morrison Government has suppressed all such information, and further it relies on consultants who tell it what it wants to hear whenever it moves beyond policies based on whims and prejudices.
Integrity Similarly, public integrity is too often absent. Instead, we have had a series of grants to different communities with no due process. The same is true for most of the infrastructure projects, which do not have any business case when they are announced. And there is still no public integrity commission to help act as a deterrent to improper ministerial approval of grants and contracts, despite it being promised as long ago as the last election.

There is no policy that shows how Australia will reach net zero emissions. Sure, Morrison has a slogan – technology not taxes – but what is lacking are policies that will drive and facilitate the take-up of the necessary technologies. Market forces will ensure over time the take-up of the necessary new technologies as the cost of renewable energy falls but putting a price on carbon would be the best and most efficient way to achieve the necessary acceleration in the reduction of carbon emissions. Not only is the Morrison Government reluctant to introduce a carbon tax, it also is not actively facilitating the take-up of renewable energy, electric cars and other ways of reducing carbon emissions. Instead, the Government is still supporting the development of new sources of fossil fuels and intervening to prolong the life of existing sources.
In short, the Morrison Government is not managing the translation to a carbon free economy at all well. Of course, what Morrison is really hoping is that the public will judge him and his Government to be competent based on Australia’s relatively good record in limiting the Covid pandemic, the strength of the economy, and national security.

The Covid Response
Economic Management
But starting with the Covid response, it is arguable that it was not so much the Morrison Government that limited our caseload and death rates compared to other countries, but other factors.
Equally, there are questions about the Government’s vaunted claims about their role in the management of the economy. The key program in response to the economic threat posed by the pandemic was JobKeeper, but this program was first proposed by Labor before the Government was persuaded to adopt it. And even then JobKeeper was badly designed and managed, with at least $20 billion being paid out to businesses who turned out to have such strong revenue growth that they didn’t need JobKeeper and should not have been eligible.
First, Australia is an island and a long way from the principal centres of the Covid viruses. This gave us a degree of natural protection, greater than in say Europe. Second, most of the credit for limiting the spread of the virus should really go to the State governments. It was the State governments that ran the lockdowns and quarantine arrangements, and mandated masks that restricted the spread of Covid, despite quarantine traditionally being a federal responsibility as laid out in the Constitution.
Unfortunately, too often the Morrison Government sought to undermine the restrictions imposed by different State governments. Furthermore, the Morrison Government made a mess of its responsibilities for restricting the spread of the Covid virus. The vaccines were initially slow to arrive, as were the RAT tests later on. While the spread of the virus in aged care was a disaster for which the Morrison Government is primarily responsible.
Furthermore, a key reason why Australia’s economic performance has been better than many other developed economies reflects the fact that we were better able to contain the disease for the reasons explained earlier. As all economists have recognised, a healthy society is vital to a healthy economy. But the Morrison Government was constantly trying to remove the health restrictions as they thought these were limiting the economy. Looking ahead, a key question is how well has the Morrison Government set up the economy for the future? The Government has ceased ranting against debt and deficits, but many of the Government’s supporters are still worried about the mountain of public debt that has accumulated under this Government. In its argument that the nation’s finances are sustainable, the Government focuses almost exclusively on the debt situation, but largely ignores the budget deficits that are projected to continue long after the return to full employment.

Economic Management The Government is certainly correct in its conclusion that the “Australian Government’s debt burden remains manageable and Australia continues to have lower debt as a share of its economy than many other advanced economies”. But the Government’s Budget deliberately ignores the budget deficits that it forecasts will continue even after aggregate private demand exceeds the full potential output of the economy. The Budget forecasts show aggregate private demand clearly exceeding economic capacity. One consequence is that Australia will increase its reliance on imports to meet that domestic demand with the current account balance forecast to switch from a surplus equivalent to 3¾ per cent of GDP in 2021-22 to a deficit of 6 per cent in 2023-24.
This forecast deterioration in the balance of payments is bound to put downwards pressure on the exchange rate, and this along with the inflationary pressures from the excess demand risks an unacceptable increase in inflation. Already there are signs that inflation is picking up, and given this outlook, the Australian government should certainly not be adding to total demand by spending more than it recovers through taxation revenue. But that is exactly what it is proposing, with Budget deficits forecast forevermore, and as high 3.4 per cent of GDP in the forthcoming financial year. The responsibility for containing inflationary pressures will fall entirely on monetary policy, with fiscal policy undermining the Reserve Bank’s efforts. One result will be that interest rates rise even more than would be necessary if fiscal policy was working in tandem to support monetary policy.
Frankly, it is therefore doubtful that the Government’s fiscal policy settings are sustainable, which throws into question their vaunted capability as economic managers.

National Security Finally, there is the performance of the Morrison Government in managing national security. As the four articles by Admiral Prune recently posted in Pearls & Irritations (6-9 April) make clear Australia’s military capability is inadequate relative to the threats we face.
Australia has wasted an enormous amount of money buying the wrong ships and planes, and we now face a major capability gap. Far from ensuring national security, the defence of Australia looks very problematic over the next 20 years or so. Given Australia’s inadequate “hard power”, we will need to rely more than ever on “soft power” to minimise the external threats to our security. But funding of the diplomatic corps has been cut over successive budgets, and the latest budget is no different.
Now our diplomatic shortcomings have enabled China to negotiate a security agreement with the Solomon Islands, despite our belated protests.
Conclusion In sum, once the record of the Morrison Government as managers is examined in any detail it is difficult to think why Morrison would expect to be judged to be a competent manager of government business.
Although this failure also reflects a failure of intelligence, if Morrison is to be believed that we had no knowledge of this possible agreement before 24 March which, however, I am inclined to doubt.

But the biggest problem is that the Morrison Government seems to have no foreign policy. Instead, it waits to find out what America thinks and then falls into line, thus weakening further our influence elsewhere.

Q&A with Independent Hanabeth Luke 1. What are your most important qualities? I have the courage to stand up in the face of what may be terrifying. Having integrity means I do what I say I will do, I speak the truth and take responsibility when I make mistakes. My background in teaching and science gives me a sound understanding of communityengaged decision-making as well as farming, weather, climate, coal seam gas, energy and natural resource management. My training as a lifeguard and marine rescue crew member gives me clarity and process in emergency situations. I have the strength and tenacity to keep going when things are tough.

With our current Government lacking integrity, why is the Federal ICCA Commission needed?
A federal integrity commission with teeth is essential for a robust federal governance system. We also need real-time reporting of political donations and require truth in political advertising. An Integrity Commission can ensure that taxpayer funds are allocated fairly and on a needs-basis. My view is that a well-being dashboard should guide decision-making, rather than the rather blunt instrument of gross domestic product (GDP).

I am concerned that neither the proposed CISIRO study nor the Reconstruction Corporation have not shared their terms of reference, ie. given clear guidance about the scope of their actions and capacity.

5. What message do you have for voters considering of Voting for you? Several federal schemes have been based on postcode rather than need, which means that families on one side of the Richmond River are not able to access the same funding as their neighbours on the other bank. This inequity needs to stop. So many people are not receiving the funding they desperately need. Thousands of our local residents are still waiting on funding. I support a four-pronged response to this major flood: a) Technology: We need Climate-resilient infrastructure, including communications and back up power supply. Also, improved real-time and publicly available data from modelling systems so people can answer the crucial question: “How high?”. Also, 3D contour maps of planned and actual water hight should be made readily available during a weather event to aid planning, rescues, and streamline funding applications and support. People need only provide their address and it can be established whether they were in the flood zone. These maps would of course need to be verified by surveyors on the ground once the waters subside. b) People: A locally run and well-funded (ie. employed) rescue force is needed, who’s remit is strong connectivity between other agencies and non-agency community rescuers for both preparation and response to natural disasters. c) Housing: For now (ie. dongers on people’s rural properties while they rebuild), and for the future. This will require a level of certainty and cohesion about larger plans for the future, especially in Lismore. Fund our tradies and others from elsewhere to come together to work on the rebuild. Let’s create a $1Bn fund for this and work together to get people back in their houses in our river towns as soon as possible d) Climate action: We need a sensible transition away from coal and gas (a shift of subsidies from fossils to farmers) – and this could be a huge opportunity for our rural communities. Let’s work together with industry and all tiers of government towards a net zero emissions Northern Rivers plan.

I am a signatory to the Uluru Statement from the Heart and I support a first nations voice in government. This is absolutely essential for a just future for Australia, so we can all move forward together.

I love our strong bonds, our solidarity, compassion and mateship - our courage and resilience, our can-do attitude, and our ability to see the good in the sometimes impossibly difficult. I value the close soulful way of life and community spirit that thrives around solid local industry, farming, fishing, tourism, small business, agri-food, culture, the arts and family. I am so proud to call the Northern Rivers home. The past few months, years in fact, have been some of the hardest we’ve been through. But they are some of the most connected, humbling, brave and supportive experiences we have had to face. Our community is bound by a love of our region and a deep love for our community.

I’m doing good considering everything at the moment. I will be honest I have my bad days and good days but doesn’t everyone. It’s been great to get back to local sport, I play netball so it has been great to get out and enjoy. Arriving in Sydney for the Sydney Royal Easter Show representing the North Coast as the Royal AgShow NSW - Young Woman of the Year and representing Lismore and the North Coast. How was this experience for you? It was such an amazing time, being able to represent Lismore and the North Coast.

Farewell to these two North East Forest Alliance NEFA legends, Susie, Greg and Wim. This caring couple gathered a crew of volunteers from near and far to set up the Trees Not Bombs Community Recovery Café after the Feb 28, 2022 flood (Mk I) and have been feeding the community FREE, nutritious meals every day up to and beyond the second March 30 flood (Mk II). Each morning their love, compassion and kindness has buoyed many broken hearts under the canopy of their big tent. Thank you both from the whole community as you travel south on new adventures. We will really miss you. Don’t despair…Trees Not Bombs Community Recovery Café will continue on feeding our community and is open again tomorrow with a new team stepping up to the task. Volunteers to cook, serve, donate food, deliver food items, clean up and wash up are always needed. We’ve seen first-hand how long it can take to recover from disaster: after our region of Wherrol Flat, Caparra and Bobin was over-run by bushfires, people who had lost their homes were still living under tarps 18 months later. We donated about $700 worth of produce and a weekly pallet of fresh produce will go to Five Loaves in Lismore from early May. Lena Willis then co-ordinates the produce out to Lifeline and to the Trees Not Bombs Café. Simone, coordinator of the Lifeline Lismore Showgrounds food distribution, says 500-1000 people come daily for food. She has lots of packaged groceries but no fresh food. She’s been working tirelessly to ensure the Koori Mail Food Hub is sustainable for the long term, providing nutritious meal options for so many. I think she has a lot in common with many of us. She takes inspiration from the capacity and kindness of the huge ongoing community response. She’s passionate about what she’s doing. All the food we delivers disappears quickly, many hungry mouths still to feed.

I drove some of his vege rendang around to very grateful houses in North and South Lismore. I managed to catch up with two households we met in the early stage of crisis response after the first flood. They both have remained in their houses throughout in fairly dire conditions. One family said they’re moving to the Sunshine Coast, ‘got to get the kids out of here’, Mum was still standing in mud telling me this. I felt grateful I could give her some of Cam’s love and a new laptop and lego for the kids that I’d picked up in Sydney, kindly donated by The Sixth Child charity. Lismore really does still need a lot of love from far and wide.

The eerie, forlorn atmosphere of a place that is usually bustling with people but is now abandoned and quiet. This perfectly describes Lismore on a Sunday. Federal and surrounding communities stepped up again in supplying Koori Mail Hearts Kitchen with lunch. I delivered Ham and Cheese Quiches. Chicken Salad Turkish Rolls, Sushi, Zucchini and Fetta Muffins, Choc Chip Cookies, Sultana Cookies and Coconut Brownies! Thank you to all the amazing cooks and bakers contributing every week. Happening again next week, and for as long as Lismore needs us.

There’s something quite beautiful about this ongoing effort! Lismore is still in the depths of crisis. Still no power for many, caravan and tent living on properties, trying to hold down jobs and send kids to school, no answers about long term housing stability and what to do with broken houses.
Food is a small offering we can give and many are still relying on Hearts Kitchen for daily food as essential. But I know, it’s easy to get back on with life when you’re removed, so to sustain this as long as we have and not forget Lismore is a testament to the good heart of this community.

Lismore Food Co-op? With our community limited to the large corporate supermarket chains in Goonellabah, might a community food co-operative be a viable alternate? A food co-op is a community managed initiative to source bulk produce directly from local farmers to provide at wholesale cost to the community. Initially this might be as simple as a small group of community members who pool their resources (or raise funds and donations), and purchase foods collectively, trading out of a local community centre and growing as resources and membership expands. A volunteer run community bulk food co-operative may be beneficial for food security as grocery prices soar and supply chains are impacted. Additionally, as a community lead initiative, the pride of collective endeavour and ownership will strengthen community bonds and connections. Interested? STREET SHAKESPEARE A NORPA YOUTH FILM PROJECT FROM THE HEART OF LISMORE Be a part of NORPA Youth’s next Street Shakespeare film project!
CALL FOR ACTORS AND DIRECTORS. The next LTC production in late June/early July is two short plays, both comedic. 1) Lockdown in Little Grimley, a 40 minute play about an amateur theatre contemplating on what to perform after opening up after Covid lockdown and 2) Alan Grimaldi and the 183, a 25 minute play about a man who finds himself unexpectedly dead and awaiting entry to heaven.
Both require male and female actors in the 30 to 65 age range who can commit to a four week rehearsal period, plus two weekends of performance. This project is an intensive workshop in acting for camera. Participants explore and rehearse selected works of William Shakespeare, developing professional techniques in the analysis and performance of classical text for the camera. The scenes and monologues are shot in urban locations across the region — we want to demystify and have fun with Shakespeare, and transpose it to our culture. This project will be directed by Scott Johnson. HOW TO GET INVOLVED To be considered for Street Shakespeare you’ll need to: Complete an Expression of Interest Submit a short video (approx. 2 mins) in which you introduce yourself to the NORPA Youth team and perform 10 to 12 lines of any Shakespeare speech or monologue that you like. Successful participants will be notified by Monday 06 June 2022. TOXINS IN PET FOOD If you buy pet food, please check the ingredients and the integrity of the manufacturers. Pet food in Australia is not regulated so there is no standard to uphold. Cheaper pet food may come at a cost to your animals. As well as being questionably nutritionally sound, some pet foods in Australia are regularly contaminated with plastic, metal and rubbish. A study found the presence of heavy metals in pets thought to be present due to ingestion via pet food. Doggie Broth Powder and Snacks (lamb or chicken available)
Ideally, fresh home-made food is best for your pets and it’s not that hard to do. Ask your local vet for advice or check out some information online. I always recommend bone broth for dogs as it’s so good for their health. I also make pupsicles for my two, Stanley and Winnie (that’s them in the photo!). For more than a decade, our dedicated research focussed on regions has firmly informed us that now is the time for an ambitious national plan for life outside of our capitals. The latest jobs vacancy figures are testament to that fact, with more than 84,000 jobs advertised in regions in March – yet again another record broken. Just three years ago that figure was around 46,000. As we travel around the country, we know employers are looking for staff and they need appropriate housing to accommodate them. Australia has no single national framework which draws together the various themes that are required to unlock the potential for regional Australia. Our National Regionalisation Framework aims to fill that void. Since launching our Consultation Paper last month, we've been engaging broadly across the nation with industry, government and community stakeholders to bring this to life — and I am delighted to say it's been well supported. To help develop the Framework, we are asking you to let us know what aspects of regional Australia must be strengthened, promoted or preserved. How can we continue to grow sustainably, optimising future opportunities, whilst ensuring the quality of life in our regions is not undermined? What are the best levers to achieve this?

Lismore’s U3A Northern Rivers Rehab pioneer became a prizewinning local artist For more than 50 years North Coast artist Margaret E. Brown suppressed her passion for painting. Instead, she devoted herself to helping others. For example, she became the first therapist on Australia’s east coast to design a house that allowed disabled people to live largely independently. Margaret also lectured in geology, taught science and French in high schools, managed her first husband’s GP practice and learnt welding to help build a personalised 13m (43ft) ocean-going yacht. As a very young child Margaret showed great artistic promise. “I just loved drawing. I just would draw anything and everything when I was small,” she said. However, her Scottish-born parents insisted that she forget art once she was in in high school to concentrate on science and languages. Her father, an irrigation engineer, dismissed Margaret’s ambition to become a professional artist (“You need to get a proper job”) and her alternative suggestions that she study architecture (“No, boys do that”) or medicine (“No, that’s too long a course”).
Her mother, a university-trained language teacher who spoke French so fluently that Parisians assumed she was native born, was not supportive either. An aunt in the U.K. suggested she spent a year there in the late 1940s visiting family. Margaret’s dad was the youngest of 15 so she had many relatives to visit. When Margaret returned to Australia her mother said she had two surprises for her. One was that the family had sold Margaret’s childhood home and moved to a suburb completely alien to her. The other surprise? They had enrolled her at Sydney University. She had a choice of three years of occupational therapy, physiotherapy or speech therapy.

Margaret chose OT. Later, as head of OT at Royal North Shore, Margaret was asked to design Australia’s first display home for disabled people, specially stroke victims.
She became a geology lecturer and later married Doug, a yacht designer after he had returned from a four-year, solo yacht voyage round the world. He designed a bigger boat so that he and Margaret could sail around the world again.

In the late ‘80s a friend asked Margaret to make up the numbers at a painting workshop being organised by one of the “Brushmen of the bush,” Eric Minchin. That workshop rekindled her passion for art. That passion had lain unexpressed for more than 50 years. Today Margaret’s delicate landscapes, in oils, watercolours and pastels hang in public and private collections. At 89 she still paints, though not as much as before, and enjoys activities and friendships she has made through Lismore’s U3A Northern Rivers, of which she was a founding member.

Men & Family Centre wins national contract to develop online Men’s Behaviour Change Program for regional men The Northern Rivers-based Men & Family Centre (M&FC) has won a contract from No to Violence to develop and implement an online Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) for men in rural, regional and remote locations. The project could dramatically improve access to MBCPs for men in the regions, which are often unavailable outside of metropolitan or major regional centres. M&FC Co-Manager Lainie Rees said the organisation was chosen to lead the project because of its recognised expertise in the Men’s Behaviour Change field, and its understanding of the needs of regional communities. “Our established Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP) is normally delivered through face-to-face group meetings.
“Over the past two years, however, face-to-face group meetings have been difficult to deliver due to COVID restrictions. This has forced us to look into online options to keep clients engaged with our service. “We’re excited by the opportunity to take the lessons we’ve learned over the past two years and apply them to the development and delivery of a full online behaviour change program for men living in rural, regional, and remote areas.” MBCPs aim to support men's behaviour change by directly challenging attitudes and behaviours that are driven by gender inequality and increasing men's understanding of the impacts these attitudes and behaviours have on affected family members. MBCPs attempt to increase the safety of women and children by supporting men to hold themselves accountable for their violent and abusive behaviours. The project is being managed by No to Violence – the largest peak body in Australia representing organisations and individuals working with men to end family violence. No to Violence CEO Jacqui Watt said the project was an important step in understanding online MBCPs for marginalised men. “We know that men living in rural, regional, and remote areas are too often unable to access MBCPs because of geographic limitations. "This project aims to understand the extent to which MBCPs designed specifically for the online space and for particular audiences are effective—and the implications for future programming.” “We are excited to work closely with the Men & Family Centre on this pilot as part of our ongoing commitment to collaborating with our member organisations to strengthen our practices and keep women, children and families safe,” explained Watt. The Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre has been contracted to conduct a full program evaluation.
