Christmas &PROSPEROUS M E R R Y

With Christmas just around the corner and the end of 2022 in sight, we reflect on a year that will be remembered for many things, but mostly for the devastation caused by the catastrophic floods that hit our region.

As we contemplate on the year that was, may we be able to focus on the glimpses of light that have penetrated the darkness. May we remember how our faith was restored in humanity, as people came from far and near to assist in our time of need. May these glimpses of light so flood our minds that it enables us to face the year ahead with hope in our hearts for a brighter future.

Our churches pray for you this Christmas and New Year is, that you will also remember the greatest gift ever given to humanity and allow His light to so penetrate your lives that you will experience the true peace that only He can give. As stated of Jesus who was birthed into our world in John 1:9 “He is the true Light who gives light to every man coming into the world.” And Jesus Word’s in John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

On behalf of the Lismore Seventh Day Adventist church, we wish you and your families a beautiful Christmas, along with a faith, peace and light filled 2023.

This year I can’t help but think how these gifts are needed more than ever. The world has teetered dangerously close to all-out war again, surely the gift of peace is needed now more than ever. Peace though is not just for the nations it is for our homes too. The coming of peace must also be in our homes. We have been through such sorrow, destruction and despair into our city that we need to hear again the message of hope and joy. As the long road to recovery for our city continues it is evident to me that to get us through all of this, wewillneedmoreloveofeachotherthanwehavehadinthepast.

These four gifts, things that Jesus showed in his life, are needed now just as much as they were needed 2000 years ago. We need not just an end to war, but a beginning of lasting peace, built on justice and respect. We need peace in our homes and an end to intimate partner violence and domestic violence. We need hope in our efforts to rebuild our city, hope for those who have lost businesses and jobs, hope for those rising costs of living that are growing beyond their ability to pay. We need joy to counter the sorrow we feel, for without joy life loses some of its sweetness. Finally we need love to tell us we are not alone inlifeandthatwearecaredforandvalued.

The child, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas, grew into a man who showed all of those things to people he encountered. He talked with, healed, welcomed, embraced the outcast. Brought people back together, restored the lonely and despised, shared love with allpeople.

As we celebrate his birth take a moment to reflect on the gifts he brings to our lives and ask yourself can I work to bring those gifts to others. I have seen, as we all have, how those gifts have been on display this year in Lismore but let us take this moment to rededicate ourselves to living out hope, joy, peace and love in our lives, just as Jesus did for his whole life.

Supporting someone who's finding things tough during the holidays

The holiday season can be one of the toughest times of the year. Some people experience feelings of loneliness, isolation and grief while for others the impact of added financial and social pressure is significant. Psychologist and Suicidologist Annie Fardell Hartley shares her tips for supporting someone who might be finding the holiday period difficult.

The end-of-year period can be a difficult time for many. Missing loved ones who are no longer with us, being unable to travel to join family and friends, financial pressure, illness or not being able to meet seasonal expectations and demands. For some it can also be a time of increased work stress, deadlines and conflict. The lead into Christmas and the New Year with carols playing on loop in shopping centres, neighbourhood lights and garden displays and invitations to parties can be a constant reminder of the season and add pressure to be jolly when someone might not feel that way. Instead of feeling festive, happy and loved, people might feel lonely, be grieving, sad, nostalgic, frustrated or stressed.

By giving the gift of conversation you can make a difference and help someone better

REGIONAL ARTS FUND TO SUPPORT 15 NEW PROJECTS IN 2023

The Australian Government has announced the Regional Arts Fund (RAF) will provide $379,719.00 to support 15 new projects in regional, rural and remote New South Wales in 2023.

The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government program administered by Regional Arts Australia and Regional Arts NSW (RANSW) that supports sustainable, cultural development in regional and remote communitiesinAustralia.

The funding is targeted at activities that will have long term cultural, economic and social benefits for individuals and the community through the development of partnerships and cultural networks, by providing artists with professional development and employment opportunities, and by supporting arts and communitydevelopment.

RANSW CEO, Dr Tracey Callinan, strongly believes that the projects selected for RAF funding in 2023 reflect the creativity and strength of the arts in NSW’s regional communities.

"Despite the challenges being experienced acrossourregional, ruralandremotelocations, our regional arts practitioners and organisations continue to find ways of responding, showing how the arts can tell our regional stories, explore the identity of our regional places and contribute to the recovery of our regional communities," Tracey commented.

"The value of the arts outside NSW’s major metropolitan centres is clearly on display through the 15 projects funded from across thestate."

Music Bizarre has been operating for over 20 years now in Lismore, Northern New South Wales.

It was originally established by David Lacey & Marcus Bowden who employed me as a book keeper in the early years.

Marcus decided to move on in 1998 and l, Deborah Ray, became business partners with David for the next 16 years.

David retired last year and so l became the sole owner and what a total pleasure & a privilege it has been to be sharing the love of music with all my beautiful fellow music enthusiasts.

Asoloshow byChrisLego Asoloshow byChrisLego

After three postponements (2 Covid,1 flood)

Lego is finally presenting his first solo show in 6 years!

A prolific creator of collages, paintings, sculptures, screenprinted treasure, zines and his infamous and unique badges which sometimes morph into 3D brooches, this has been a long time coming.

Just like one of his roasted tomato chilli sauces in the slow cooker, all the flavours have been given time to simmer and coalesce into a smorgasbord of CHEAP MAGIC.

A few hundred intricate badges never seen before, thoughtful sculptures that would be the perfect addition to your favourite room and a cast of paintings that were saved from floodwaters by being stacked on the bed (which floated like a raft stacked with weirdness) this show will be a playful and raucous celebration of tenacity and staunch goodhumour.

Limited Department of Nothing merch will also be for sale on the night. Lego wears a lot of hats for someone with such great hair. Come alongforacircusofmusicandsidewaysideas.

There will truely be something for everyone, worksstartingat$9andupwards.

DJs, food, and a whole bunch of what the mediausedtocall‘colourfulracingidentities'.

Nottobemissed.
