Cook Mulls Mandatory Sick Time

he Cook County Board of Commissioners is considering an ordinance that would require businesses to provide sick leave to their employees. Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer (10th district) is sponsoring it. It follows a similar paid sick leave ordinance that the Chicago City Council approved in late June, requiring nearly every employer in the city to provide some paid leave to employees. According to The National Law Review, the idea coincides with a nationwide trend to mandate that employers provide paid sick leave. The “Cook County Employer Paid Sick Leave Ordinance” covers any employee who works at least 80 hours within a 120-day period. It requires employers to provide workers the right to accrue up to 40 hours of paid sick leave per year at a rate of one hour for every 40 hours worked. In other words, employees Continued on PG 12

West Nile Reports On The Rise hough the closest report of a person contacting West Nile Virus in Illinois comes from the Bloomington area, the number of mosquitoes carrying the disease has increased on the North Shore and concern remains high. Since the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District and Lake County Health Department began testing in late spring, the percentage of sampling sites reporting the Culex Mosquito, which carries the virus, has grown. In Cook County, 148 of 718 testing sites from Wilmette and Glenview on the south through Glencoe and Northbrook on the north have reported positive tests as of August 23, according to the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District. When Evanston, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles and Skokie are included, the number grows to 368 of 1,270. The highest percentage is in Northbrook (37.9) and the smallest next door in Glencoe (12.4), according to the district's report. The percentage is 31.0
