Editor’s Note

Adear friend of mine brought the word “porching” into my vernacular a few years ago. e facade of her house had just been redone and incorporated a huge porch with comfortable, impossible-to-stain furniture. Now it’s common to receive a text from her saying, “we’re porching ... come over.” For me, these impromptu—come as you are, stay as long as you like—get-togethers are the very essence of July. I love the lazy days of summer.

But while I’m content to “porch” all month, there’s a contingent of remarkable people working their very hardest at this time of year. Take Michael Lawrence, for example, head coach and executive director of the Lake Forest Swim Club. Lawrence’s decades-long commitment to developing swimmers at the Lake Forest Swim Club, combined with his international service to USA Swimming, has produced five Olympic-level swimmers—including gold medalist Matt Grevers. Read about this local coaching legend in Aqua Man.

In Freshly Picked, we meet Kate Cole, who went from growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm to running Lake Bluff ’s popular Farmers Market. She has a knack for bringing people together and believes that strong families make strong communities, something you can see in everything she does— from starting a girls’ softball league to making Friday morning markets a place where neighbors connect.
e Women’s Board of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital recently completed its annual distribu-
tion of proceeds from the year’s philanthropic efforts. e Board’s innovative approach to grant-making— featuring “Shark Tank”-style presentations—has become the gold standard for community investment. Read about the Board’s thoughtful process in Shark Tank Innovation.
Amy Gordy’s profile in e Portrait highlights this fitness instructor’s genuine passion for health and wellness. Her energetic spirit inspires clients, friends, and racquet-sport opponents alike. Gordy shares her insights on fitness and her North Shore favorites in e Portrait.
In On Exhibit, we offer a sneak peek of Whispers of the Wild: Re ections on Giverny, the latest exhibit at e Gallery in Lake Forest. Featuring the stunning work of artist Susan Bloch, this exhibit will transport you to the lushest of French gardens.
Whether you’re inspired to dive into competitive swimming, discover fresh produce at the farmers market, or simply settle in with a good story, I hope this month affords you plenty of time to “porch” and savor both the season and this issue of Forest & Blu

LPLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE
VASER 4-D HI DEFINITION LIPOSCULPTURE PLUS RENUVION
FORESTBLUFF.COM
J. W. CONATSER FOUNDER & PUBLISHER jwc@jwcmedia.com
words by Steven Bloch, M.D.
iposuction has been in existence for close to thirty years. It continues to be refined and improved. Two years ago I discussed Hi-Definition Liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with significant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted, and enhanced. Like every procedure, over time one realizes that there are some limitations. e single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin. More specifically the level of the skin’s elasticity. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better, results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient, if there is significant laxity of skin, the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It is that middle group of patients who present the most challenge. Obviously, most patients want the best results with the least invasive method. For this group, I’m now combining Vaser Hi-Definition Liposculpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called Renuvion.

Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. e trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deeper tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with near-instantaneous tissue cooling. e delivery of energy beneath the skin and thru the helium plasma allows 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. e fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. e full effect of this treatment can take up to six months to see.

WHERE THE WILD WHISPERS BACK
In Lake Forest, Susan Bloch revisits Giverny—on her own terms
At a glance, the water lilies feel familiar. e suggestion of a willow, the soft implosion of lilac, a shimmer of blue barely held together by light. But look again, and you’ll find yourself in something else entirely: not Monet’s garden, but its echo—a modern wilderness rendered with equal reverence and more than a little reinvention.
Opening July 1 at e Gallery in Lake Forest, Whispers of the Wild: Re ections on Giverny is Susan Bloch’s latest body of work, a botanical series that doesn’t imitate its inspiration so much as respond to it—like a painter walking through Giverny at dusk, listening.
Trained as a sculptor, Bloch brings a sense of dimensionality to her canvases that makes them feel less like paintings and more like environments. A graduate of Syracuse University (BFA) and e Art Institute of Chicago (MFA), she approaches painting with a tactile intelligence. Her works are dense with flora, teeming with subtle motion. ere are glimpses of birds, hints of what might be just out of frame, and always, a sense of life breathing beneath the surface. ough impressionist in impulse, these are not period pieces. Bloch stretches the language of Monet
without mimicking it. Her palette is richer, her strokes more assertive. e light in her world doesn’t just land softly—it sparks, scatters, recedes. ere’s reverence here, yes, but also curiosity. And tension. A quiet wildness.
It’s tempting to view this exhibition through the lens of homage. But Bloch’s work does more than honor Monet—it advances the conversation. Her gardens aren’t merely beautiful. ey’re alive with questions. What do we see when we look at nature— and what looks back? Where does wildness end and memory begin?
Each painting feels like a moment suspended, inviting not just observation but immersion. ese are works that ask you to slow down, to stay a while, to listen.
e exhibition runs through August 31 at e Gallery, 202 E. Wisconsin Avenue in Lake Forest, with an opening reception on ursday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. And while the address is not Normandy, you may find yourself, for a moment, believing otherwise.

Fitness coach Amy Gordy shares a glimpse of her life in Lake Forest, both on and o the courts.
photography by Katrina Wittkam
styling and hair by Theresa DeMaria / makeup by Emily Ann

While native Texan Amy Gordy says she’ll always have that signature “southern spirit,” Lake Forest is her forever home. “I’m a mom to two amazing boys who inspire me every day to lead by example and live a healthy, active lifestyle,” says Gordy, explaining how she met husband, Hunter, in Orlando. “After having kids, my passion for fitness and nutrition really took o ff, and I knew I wanted to help others feel their best too.” Soon after moving to Lake Forest for Hunter’s job, she discovered the Quest Performance Training community. “I was welcomed with open arms and that’s where I met Marquone Edmonds—first a friend, then a mentor,” she says. “You’ll even catch him popping up in my TikToks from time to time.” Gordy credits Coach Q, as Edmonds is known, for helping her launch her AG Well fitness coaching business, which empowers others to build sustainable, healthy habits. “Without him, I’m not sure AG Well would even exist!” A diehard racquet sports enthusiast, Gordy also serves on the board at the Lake Forest Club. “It’s become a huge part of my life,” she says. “It’s where I play all the racquet sports—even in winter—and connect with so many wonderful people in the community.” With summer in full swing, you can find Gordy in the gym, on the courts, or chasing her boys around. “And when I’m not moving, I’m probably posting or scrolling on TikTok—because wellness should be fun, and I always love a good laugh.” Gordy recently took time from her busy schedule to share a few of her best fitness hacks and other faves. If you could only play one racquet sport, what would it be? is is a very hard question because I love them all but if I had to choose I would say tennis. It’s the most challenging racket sport and the best workout both physically and mentally. Favorite way to stay in shape? I’m a very big fan of strength training because as we age we lose muscle mass. Everyone should be lifting weights! Guilty pleasure? emed cruises! I know that sounds insane, and it is, but the Hallmark Christmas cruise last year changed my life and now I’m hooked! You can catch me in November setting sail again! Favorite local restaurant to dine al fresco? e outdoor patio at the Lake Forest Club is the best! I also really enjoy the outdoor patio at the Deerpath Inn. Sportswear brand you can’t live without? Considering I live the majority of my life in sportswear, hands down my favorite is Lululemon. Movie you’re most looking forward to this summer? Probably Happy Gilmore 2 because I love an Adam Sandler movie. Favorite way to celebrate 4th of July? I love attending the Lake Bluff parade and I also enjoy the poolside activities and fireworks at the Lake Forest Club! Favorite workout music? Rap is my music of choice for strength training but when I’m playing tennis or paddle I prefer pop music. Your next vacation will be to where? is summer we are going to London and Scotland! Your ultimate beach picnic includes? ere’s nothing better than a sandwich and chips at the beach if it’s during the day. If it’s evening, then I’d prefer a charcuterie spread with a crisp white wine. TV show or podcast you can’t stop binging? I am currently binging One Tree Hill after reading Dinner For Vampires. I’m hooked! Favorite court to play racket sports on? My favorite is a clay court because it’s the easiest on the body. Dream vacation? My dream vacation would be to sail around the world (obviously on a cruise ship) and visit as many destinations as possible. Maybe one day when I’m retired I will be able to live out this dream. Social media in uencer who inspires you? It’s a toss-up between Alix Earle and Bethenny Frankel. ey’re both very true to themselves and unapologetic. I respect that! Next item to check o your bucket list? I have my sights set on heading to Iceland next August for the total solar eclipse. I’ve now seen two and it’s been an amazing experience both times. If you haven’t seen one yet, you’ve got to do it if you can!

Ajiaco Bogotano
Creamy Chicken Potato Soup with Avocado & Sweet Corn
words and photography by Monica Kass
Rogers
Ilove this unusual summery soup! It features heaps of fresh avocado, sweetcorn kernels cut off the cobb, tender chicken breast chunks, and cilantro over a silky base of blended chicken and potato soup. Adapted from famed chef Joyce Goldstein’s recipe, this beautiful bowl is a refined, easier-to-eat version of Columbia’s rustic Ajiaco Bogotano (chicken soup of Bogota). Also, although traditionally served with cream— (Goldstein’s recipe included a cup and a half of it!), the soup is just as tasty without, or, with just a swirl. We’ve garnished it with fresh chopped cilantro leaves, but you can substitute capers or snipped chives if cilantro is not your jam. A nice feature of the soup? You can make the potato and chicken stock base the day before, prepping the chicken breasts, avocado and corn right before you want to serve the soup. And if you like, you can grill the chicken breasts and corn on the cobb rather than poaching and steaming, to add a bit of smoky char to the soup.
INSTRUCTIONS
MAKE SOUP BASE: In a heavy-bottomed soup pot, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add onions and cover. Remove lid to stir the pot occasionally, cooking until onions are very soft and translucent. Once onions are soft, remove lid and stir in cumin. Cook for 1 minute. Add diced potatoes and 4 cups of the chicken stock. Simmer 20 to 30 minutes until potatoes are cooked through and tender. Using an immersion (stick) blender, or regular blender, pulverize soup until very smooth and creamy. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Set aside.
STEAM CORN: Grill corn OR add sweet corn cobbs to a pot with water over high heat. Cover and steam corn until kernels are tender. Remove from heat, strain off water. When corn is cool enough to handle, cut corn kernels from the cobbs. Set aside.
POACH CHICKEN BREAST: Add remaining 1 cup of chicken stock to a sauté pan and heat until simmering. Add bite-sized pieces of chicken breast and poach, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is tender and no longer pink inside. Remove from heat. NOTE: If you prefer, you can grill the chicken breasts whole, rather than poaching them, and then chop the chicken into bite-sized pieces after grilling.
PREP VEGETABLES: Dice avocado and chop cilantro.
TO SERVE: Just before serving, heat soup base to a simmer. Swirl in heavy cream to taste, if using. If soup is too thick, add in some of the 1 cup of stock in which you poached the chicken. Place poached chicken pieces in base of each soup bowl. Ladle soup over the chicken. Top each serving with generous portion of cubed avocado and several spoons of sweet corn kernels. Sprinkle with fresh snipped cilantro.
SERVES 6
INGREDIENTS
• 3 Tbsp unsalted butter
• 2 large onions, peeled and diced
• 1 ½ Tbsp ground cumin
• 1, 1 ½ lb bag mini yellow potatoes, scrubbed and diced into small pieces
• 6 cups chicken stock, divided (5 cups for soup base; 1 cup for poaching chicken)
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Heavy cream (optional) to taste
• 3 or 4 ears of sweet corn, steamed or grilled, kernels cut off cobbs
• 3 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
• 3 avocados, peels and pits discarded; flesh cut into small cubes

North Chicago welcomes the 100th Fisher House, bringing comfort to families of military service members and veterans receiving medical treatment.
words by Alessia Girardin / photograph courtesy of Fisher House
Ee North Shore celebrates a significant milestone this month with the opening of the 100th Fisher House, marking only the second such facility in Illinois following the one that opened in 2010 at the Hines VA in west suburban Chicago. is newest Fisher House will be situated at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, with a formal dedication ceremony scheduled for July 29.
Similar to Ronald McDonald House, which supports families of children receiving medical treatment, Fisher Houses provide complimentary accommodations for military and veteran families during medical crises. ese homes are strategically located near VA and military hospitals.
“We are very excited to open the 100th Fisher House,” says Michelle Horn, Vice President of Communications at Fisher House Foundation. “Fisher House Foundation has been around for about 30 years, and reaching 100 is a huge milestone.”
e new facility will accommodate up to 16 families, offering shared amenities including a common kitchen, laundry facilities, dining room, and inviting living space. At full capacity, Fisher Houses save military and veteran families more than $1.3 million annually, according to Horn.
Since the first Fisher House opened in 1990, the facilities have evolved to include wheelchair accessibility and meet ADA compliance standards—improvements made possible through the leadership of Ken Fisher, chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. While architectural enhancements have been implemented over the years, the mission and spirit remain unchanged.
“Every time you walk into a Fisher House, you feel this
great amount of love,” Horn explains. “Fisher Houses are truly a home away from home.”
Families arrive at Fisher Houses during vulnerable moments in their lives, creating natural communities of support.
“ e Fisher House is not just a place to sleep at night,” Horn adds. “It ends up being a place where people can give back and lean on each other.”
e houses are aesthetically beautiful, featuring highquality furnishings, linens, and thoughtful décor. e impact on families can be profound. Horn shares the story of Felicia, whose father, a WWII veteran, stayed at a Fisher House until his final days. “Families like Felicia’s had the chance to focus 100 percent on care, which relieved stressors that come from being in a hospital,” she says. is Fisher House addresses a significant need in the North Shore area.
“We couldn’t think of a better place,” Horn explains. “ e Midwest reaches many veterans and military families. e demand in the North Shore was huge.”
Local support has been instrumental, including organizations like Friends of the Fisher House Illinois and community leaders such as Cristina Lowe, whose family military service—including her WWII veteran father and brothers—inspires her advocacy.
“I want to find a way to give and volunteer for the Fisher Houses,” Lowe says. “It’s a very exciting project.”
Horn concludes with confidence: “We are certain this Fisher House will maintain high occupancy and make a meaningful difference for veteran and military families.”

From Summer Mode to Game Mode
Why your athlete’s struggles aren’t about e ort to look ready on the outside. On the inside, the pressure’s building. How to can I help them reset so their season doesn’t unravel before it starts.
words by Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo / photography by Maria Ponce Berre styling by Lillie Alexander /hair & makeup by Rabecca Ann Gaspard

Each month, peak performance sports psychologist (and fellow parent) Dr. E tackles your toughest questions head-on.
Dear Dr. E.—
My teen practices a lot over the summer, but when school starts up again, they tend to be mentally all over the place. How can I help them shift into a more competitive mindset without overwhelming them?
Dear Shifting Gears— is is such a crucial—and common—moment in an athlete’s year. On the surface, it might seem like your teen is just rusty or distracted. But what’s really going on beneath the surface is a full-blown mental transition. And most athletes are never taught how to make it.
Summer tends to bring looser schedules, lighter practices, and less pressure. Even when they train, it’s often at their own pace. en suddenly, the demands shift overnight: early mornings, structured team practices, academic expectations, pressure to perform, and social stress—all at once. e nervous system doesn’t flip that switch automatically. And when athletes haven’t mentally recalibrated, they enter the season with one foot still in summer.
at’s when you see the signs:
• ey overthink plays they used to execute with ease.
• ey have trouble getting past mistakes.
• ey seem unusually tired, irritable, or indifferent.
As a parent, you wonder—What happened? Here’s the good news: ey don’t need more pressure. ey need a pathway.
1. Create a “Mental Preseason”
Just like the body needs conditioning, the
brain needs calibration. Before the first game whistle blows, your athlete needs to mentally reconnect with why they play. Not just their goals, but their purpose, their identity as a competitor. e spark doesn’t come from pressure; It comes from alignment.
2. Anchor em with Routines
Athletes thrive on rhythm. Simple pre-practice or pre-game rituals can act like a mental switch: “Now it’s time to compete.” ese don’t need to be elaborate. What matters is that the ritual becomes a reliable cue to shift from chaos to clarity.
3. Address the Invisible pressure
Many athletes feel they’re supposed to “just be ready.” But that creates hidden stress— especially when expectations are high and confidence is still catching up. When athletes internalize pressure without tools to manage it, performance suffers. When they learn how to reframe pressure, it becomes fuel.
4. Ditch balance. Teach regulation e truth is, perfect balance between school, sports, and social life doesn’t exist. What does exist—and what elite athletes learn—is the ability to regulate their energy and focus. at means knowing when to push, when to pause, and how to reset fast.
is isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about training smarter
e athletes who learn to shift their mindset with intention—who build mental strength alongside physical skill—are the ones who don’t just start the season strong…
ey own it.
Want to give your athlete every advantage—not just physically, but mentally—this season? Dr. E equips young athletes with the strategies to stay composed under pressure, bounce back from setbacks, and bring their best when the stakes are high. Learn more at ELevive.com.

Swimming has taken longtime coach/ USA Swimming administrator Michael Lawrence to natatoriums in countless countries, but what continues to mean the world to him is located right here— the Lake Forest Swim Club.
words by Bill McLean photography by James Gustin styling by Theresa DeMaria

ALYSE MAURO MASON
KNOWS ALL about Michael Lawrence, the exceptional head coach/executive director at the Lake Forest Swim Club (LFSC), and Michael Lawrence, the revered USA Swimming administrator.
She swam fast for him. She also watched and heard elite folks at an Olympic venue express waves of appreciation for him.
“I was assigned lane one (a low seed’s spot) for the 500-yard freestyle race at a club meet in Wisconsin,” recalls Mauro Mason, a 2003 Lake Forest High School (LFHS) graduate and 10-year member of the LFSC. “Coach Mike told me to take it out fast and hold on for as long as possible.
“I couldn’t believe the strategy at first,” she continues. “Take it out fast, in the 500? Are you kidding me? at’s something you try to do in the 100 free or the 200 free, not in a distance event. I remember thinking, ‘ is is going to hurt.’”
Lawrence’s charge had just turned 15. e event’s top seed, slotted to start from a middle block, was
Years later, Mauro Mason walked alongside Lawrence at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and surmised the man next to her must have been a Hollywood Walk of Fame honoree.
“Coach Mike was treated like a celebrity everywhere we went, with all these people coming up to him to shake his hand or give him a high five or say something nice to him,” says Mauro Mason, the co-event director of the Chicago chapter of Swim Across America, a nonprofit dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and treatment. “He has passion for coaching and passion for everything he does for USA Swimming because he wants to help make athletes and the sport of swimming better.
“I will be forever grateful that I have the privilege and honor of calling him ‘Coach’.”
Lawrence, 68, became LFSC head coach in 2018, succeeding Maureen Sheehan upon her retirement. Lawrence and Sheehan had been partners for 42 years when she passed away in 2024.

18. Mauro Mason—uber-versatile swimmer Alyse Mauro back then—held on, endured searing pain, and won in impressive fashion, stunning the favorite by at least three body lengths.
“ e hug Coach Mike gave me on deck afterward, you don’t forget a moment like that,” Mauro Mason says. “He was laughing hard; I was laughing hard. I think he went with that unusual race plan because he had noticed I had something left at the end of previous races.”
“We first met on a pool deck in1984,” Lawrence says. “I was working in Glen Ellyn (at B.R. Ryall YMCA) at the time and Maureen was coaching at the Lake Forest Swim Club. She was a hall of fame coach, very humble and compassionate, with an incredible work ethic.”
Lawrence joined Sheehan’s staff in late 1984.

Matt Grevers is LFSC’s most decorated ex-member, having captured six Olympic medals, including four gold medals. LFSC coaches also developed Conor Dwyer (owner of an Olympic gold medal); siblings and two-time Illinois high school state champions Mitch and Rachel Stoehr; siblings and former Puerto Rico Olympians Douglas and Kristina Lennox; and former LFHS swimming coach Carolyn Grevers, who swam at the University of Kansas.
Lawrence, of Grayslake, has coached more than 200 individual Illinois state age group champions, 217 nationally ranked age group swimmers, six world-ranked swimmers, and five future Olympians.
“We try to focus on the big view, emphasizing growth—physical, social, emotional—through swimming and the health benefits of the sport,” says Lawrence, who swam and played water polo at Oak Park and River Forest High School, helping the Huskies’ polo squad capture the 1973 state title as an all-state wing. “You want the kids (beginning at the age of 6) to develop a love of the water and physical literacy, learning how the body works in water versus during dryland workouts.
“I really like teaching the little ones and watching them learn to float and overcome a fear like diving at the start of a race. And there’s nothing like the sight of a smiling kid’s head popping up in the pool, realizing he had just done something right.”
“Michael is a coach who commands respect,”

Team USA’s assistant swimming manager then? Lawrence.
“I’ve been lucky, because swimming has taken me all over the world,” says Lawrence, who was a member of the USA Swimming Board of Directors from 1999-2012 and an Olympic International Operations Committee member from 1996-2014. “My first international trip representing Team USA was to Fukuoka, Japan, in 1995, ahead of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. We visited Hiroshima—such a solemn place.”
Exmoor Country Club (Highland Park) Aquatics Director Cindy Dell, another former LFHS swimming coach, served as an LFSC coach with Lawrence and Sheehan for nearly 18 years.
“Michael is a coach who commands respect,” Dell says. “But he doesn’t just teach swimmers; he also teaches coaches. I became the coach I am because I got to observe Michael and Mo (Sheehan). At the Lake Forest Swim Club, I learned what it takes to motivate athletes and how important it is to put athletes first.
“Michael,” she adds, “is an amazing coach, leader, mentor, peer, and friend.”
Laurel Whittington marvels annually at the time Lawrence commits to teaching and coaching in Lake Forest and to serving USA Swimming in a slew of volunteer capacities.
“Michael is an amazing coach, leader, mentor, peer, and friend.”
“He kind of does … everything,” says Whittington, an LFSC coach since 2004 and head manager of Team USA’s marathon swimming at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. “Michael loves to be involved in developing young local swimmers and in governance at the national level. He’s a really good, patient

teacher. And those governance opportunities, they’re like hobbies to him, but I know he takes them seriously because he cares deeply about swimming.”

Shark Tank Innovation
A er five years using a “Shark Tank” model as part of its Grants Initiative, the Women’s Board of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital funds grants that make the hospital a warmer, more holistic, and more e ective destination for healing and wellness.

LAKE FOREST’S LESLIE BASEDOW AND AMY WELLS—with nearly 20 years of service between them to the Women’s Board of Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital (NMLFH), co-chair the grants committee that oversees the board’s Grants Initiative. e Grants Initiative is a special fund the Women’s Board established in 2011 to support new technology, clinical services, and breakthrough research at the hospital. e Women’s Board raises funds for the initiative exclusively through their annual appeal that is mailed to thousands of homes throughout Lake Forest and Lake Bluff each fall.

“ e Women’s Board grant initiative has funded a number of impactful projects at the hospital,” Wells explains. “Doctors, nurses, and other staff use the funds to develop new programs and care models that enhance the care available to the Lake Forest community.”
e Women’s Board of NMLFH dates back to 1946. e board is comprised of more than 150 talented and committed regular, honorary, and sustaining members. Over the past 76 years, the board has raised more than $15 million in support of Lake Forest Hospital.
“Each year we take the full amount we raise from the appeal and give it all away,” Basedow adds. “It’s inspiring, it’s immediate, and it’s high impact. Our entire grants ini-

tiative is funded through gifts to the appeal. Without the support of the community and Women’s Board, the program just doesn’t have the fuel.”
During the first quarter of every year, the grants committee solicits applications from all areas of the hospital and from varying levels of experience. Typically, the committee receives about 20 grant applications, and they make awards to between seven and 10 of them. Applications are carefully reviewed by the Women’s Board Grants Committee.
“We have established a rigorous, collaborative vetting process to ensure that funds are allocated to the most impactful programs,” Basedow says. “We are fortunate to have Clinical Advisors Dr. Michael Bauer and Karen Mahnke sitting on our committee, whose invaluable knowledge and guidance support the initiative.
ey encourage staff members to apply and work alongside the Women’s Board during the vetting process. In addition, Karin Mohar has been the driving force behind our operations for over a decade. Her unwavering support has ensured the seamless execution of processes, from mailing appeals to managing social media campaigns to overseeing the application review process.”
In 2018, when Susan Loiacano was President of the Women’s Board, she introduced the “Shark Tank” format for applicant reviews. is game-changing idea allows applicants to pitch their ideas, engage directly with board members and clinical advisors, and receive immediate feedback. Dr. Bauer and Mahnke also actively participate in the Shark Tank and assist with decisionmaking.
“ e applications are impressive, and seeing the presentation can change our minds about a finalist,” Wells say. “ e presenters bring more details, data, impacts, and always remind us of the WHY we put our time into fundraising and support the innovative projects NWLF staff bring to the table. Being a part of the team that supports those ideas is a gift.”
Once the Shark Tank committee reaches a decision, the participants are immediately notified, and the winners are funded. On May 21, the grants committee held its annual Shark Tank and funded the following applicants for 2025:
• Utilizing 3D images to enhance orthopedic explanations
• Providing a comprehensive dementia support series for caregivers
• Advancements in technology for enhancing neonatal warming protocols
• Training to enhance initial IV success in children
• Advanced technology to improve pressure injury diagnosis and treatment
Basedow’s work on the Grants Initiative also has personal meaning.
“I’m grateful to contribute to health care innovation in our community,” she says. “My mom, Ellen Stirling, was deeply committed to the hospital and received exceptional care throughout her life. My Dad, Jim Stirling, is a Life Trustee of Northwestern Memorial Hospital and co-chaired the Our Legacy, Our Future campaign that raised more than $100 million with Debbie Saran. I’m proud to continue our family’s tradition of supporting Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital.”

“I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin,” says Cole, the married mother of two. “Whenever I can bring some of my childhood into our village, I do. e Farmers Market has been a great way for me to reconnect with some of that, and I’m hoping to help those who come to the market experience that, too.”
For those unfamiliar, Lake Bluff Farmers Market is a seasonal outdoor market that brings people into Lake Bluff ’s Central Business District and provides easy access to highquality fresh produce plus appetizers, baked goods, cheeses, flowers, sauces, soups, and more. It gives shoppers the satisfaction of knowing they’re supporting small farms and small businesses. e Farmers Market was started in 1993 as part of a plan to revive downtown Lake Bluff, which is now a vibrant shopping area full of cafes, restaurants, pubs, stores and more. e market is open on Fridays from 7 a.m. until noon until October 10.
“ e village and our volunteers actually run the market,” Cole says modestly. “My job is to be on site every Friday to make sure all of the vendors are safe and have what they need to be successful.”
For this year’s market, Cole hopes to unveil children’s programming to create a more meaningful relationship between the vendors and those who visit them on Friday mornings.
“I love that I get to welcome everyone to the market,” she says. “For someone who loves her community, being the market manager is the perfect job for me. It doesn’t feel like work at all. It feels like family.”

Cole’s position with the Farmers Market is just the latest of the community roles she’s embraced since moving to Lake Bluff four years ago.
“I came to Lake Bluff with a lot of experience helping children and families,” Cole says, owning a consulting business called Parent Like a Pro where she shares her insights on raising young children. “ at’s my passion. Everything I do now has a piece of that built into it.”

“ It doesn’t feel like work at all. It feels like family.”
in first through fourth grades. We now have two leagues with more than 90 players who participate. It’s all in-house, which means we only play other Lake Bluff teams. We focus on teaching the skills needed to play softball. is is my full-time volunteer job and I’ve been rewarded non-stop for it. Today, families in our community can watch their girls compete on the diamond at Artesian Park and have a picnic afterwards. is is the perfect way to spend a summer night.”
As if being a market manager and softball commissioner wasn’t enough, Cole is also the Director of Community Life for the Community Church of Lake Forest & Lake Bluff where she leads community outreach.
“Immediately after the pandemic, our pastor, [Rev. Dr.] Tom Dickelman, asked if I would be interested in helping out with the children during our services on Sunday. Today, with Rev. Sean Miller, we’re delivering programming for small children and families that encourages coming together through meaningful play,” she says. “I can’t help myself. If I see something I can do, or a process I can make better, I have to do it—especially if it can add to our community. I am all about that.”
at includes Lake Bluff ’s newly founded softball league for girls.
“Baseball is such a part of living in Lake Bluff,” Cole says. “I was surprised when I got here and there wasn’t a team specifically for girls. A year after my daughter started playing T-ball, I joined the Lake Bluff Youth Baseball Association and organized a softball league for girls

HIGH NOTES
Bringing Nashville to Lake Forest for a unique fundraising event this summer also brings hope to children in Haiti, India, and Venezuela.
words by Bill McLean / illustration by Tom Bachtell
Lake Forest and Nashville, Tennessee, are separated by 500 miles. For the fourth year in a row, Music City will come calling—and singing, via the appearances of three esteemed singer-songwriters— here in Lake Forest on July 10. “It’s going to be another special evening of performances in a spectacular setting (the renowned estate of Nancy and Adrian Smith) promises Lake Forest native and ISTO Advisors cofounder Chris Fisher, whose brother Pete, a former Grand Ole Opry general manager and Academy of Country Music CEO, will serve as the executive producer and MC of the house party featuring Jacob Davis, Lauren Hungate, and Ray Fulcher. “Artists behind some of the biggest hits by Luke Combs, Jordan Davis, and many more will take turns in a songwriter-in-theround format, sharing the stories behind the songs before performing them,” Chris continues. But the priceless entertainment value is only part of the engaging evening. e event doubles as a fundraiser, auction included, for Music Heals International (MHI), founded in 2014 by singersongwriter Sara Wasserman after she witnessed the impact music education had on helping children heal and discover hope in Haiti, in the wake of that country’s devastating earthquake in 2010. MHI now also serves children in India and Venezuela through the power of music. MHI emboldened 65 students at two schools at the outset. ose numbers today include more than 1,600 students

at more than 10 sites. MHI inspires achievement, resilience, and creativity through music. “ ese young kids, who live amidst violence and poverty, can find inspiration and hope as they escape to a world of musical instruments and instruction,” says Chris, adding that ISTO Advisors (a financial planning firm) is the Lake Forest house party’s presenting sponsor for the fourth year in a row. Other sponsors include the Smith Family, Just Rite IT, Epic Burger, Freshie, e Long Drink, and Miller Cooper. “Our team at ISTO loves to serve and MHI exemplifies an organization dedicated to serving others.” After all, ISTO stands for In Service To Others. Chris and his wife, Lesley, danced to music long ago—we’re guessing to a genre other than country—at consecutive proms as members of Lake Forest High School’s Class of 1990 and later raised Danny, Jake, and Molly in Lake Forest. “As the father of three children who have access to so many resources in Lake Forest, I’ve always considered myself fortunate to live in such a supportive and inspiring community,” Chris says. “I’m thrilled we get to be part of something here in Lake Forest that will help make a difference for these children.”
e Smith estate is located at 830 North Green Bay Road, Lake Forest. For more information about MHI, to donate, or to purchase tickets for the Lake Forest house party, visit https://mhinternational.giv.sh/b8c3. e house party runs from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on July 10. ISTO Advisors, LLC is an SEC Registered Investment Advisor.
