Highland Park will host a variety of festivals, street fairs, and other entertainment to keep residents in the summer groove.

Highland Park will be buzzing with activity this summer, offering a dynamic lineup of special event and festivals in the heart of the city’s downtown.

From the Taste of Highland Park on June 20 and 21 to a vintage car show on September 6 to the annual favorite Stews and Brews on October 11, residents and visitors can enjoy great food and entertainment throughout the warm season.

“We want to draw the local community and people beyond to get out where they can enjoy the weather along with sipping some wine, munching on gourmet food, and listening to live music,” says Diane Larson, Marketing Coordinator for the City of Highland Park. “Our summer events are a chance for people to see what makes Highland Park special and partake in some summer fun.”

Other events not sponsored by the city, including an additional live music festival and arts festivals, are also on the summer menu.

The Taste of Highland Park on June 20 and 21 is the city’s premier dining and music festival, located along Central Avenue between 1st and 2nd streets and in Port Clinton Square. Festival attendees can enjoy more than a dozen local premier food and beverage vendors along with live music by tribute artists spanning multiple decades and genres.

“This year’s family friendly entertainment will transport people back in time with Too Hype Crew’s tribute to old school hip hop, Queen Tribute Band Queenflash, and special performances of the musicals Rent and Hairspray,” Larson says. “Visitors can indulge in food options guaranteed to offer something for every palate.”

At the Vintage Car Show on September 6 in the St. John’s North Parking Lot (525 Central Avenue) classic car fanatics can check out an array of vintage cars while listening to a live radio broadcast and dining on a delicious food and cold beverages. Kids can enjoy activities just for them.

11. In what has become a local tradition, the event is described as “not your ordinary chili cookoff or craft beer festival” and includes comfort food from local Highland Park restaurants. Attendees can pair their dishes of chili, beef stroganoff, or Hungarian Goulash with dozens of beverages including craft beers, spiced wine, and other specialty drinks.

Most Friday evenings between July 11 and September 26, the city presents Downtown Concerts at Clinton Pavilion and a variety of performances from artists of different genres, as well as on-site food and beverage vendors.

Additional events include the weekly Ravinia Farmer’s Market every Wednesday (7 a.m. to 1 p.m.) through October, and Food Truck Thursdays, every Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to dusk through Sept. 18, (both at Jens Jensen Park). Music buffs will enjoy the Bitter Jester Music Festival on Friday June 6 and Saturday, June 7 in Port Clinton Square and National Night Out on August 5 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Hidden Creek AquaPark. This annual, nationwide event brings together police and the communities they service, and for the first time, Highland Park’s event will take place at the Park District’s Hidden Creek AquaPark.

The events are part of the efforts of the City of Highland Park to bring the community together and enjoy the summer weather.

“In the Midwest, we only have a few months of warmth where we can get out and feel the sunshine,” Larson adds. “We invite residents from Highland Park and the surrounding communities to partake in all we have to offer this summer in downtown Highland Park.”

Northbrook family competes in Red Bull’s soapbox car race on May 31.

Shooting into the air from a 24-foot-high ramp in a cart cobbled together from foam panels, plywood, pipes, and duct tape sounds crazy. But for Northbrook’s Leandro Martinez and his “Spin Cycle” crew, it was a dream come true.

One of 50 amateur racing teams accepted to participate in Red Bull’s Des Moines, Iowa Soapbox Race May 31, Spin Cycle had been vying to compete for years.

“We applied for the Red Bull Soapbox Race in 2022 but didn’t get in,” says Leandro, “so, we were thrilled to have the chance this year.”

Designed to look like a giant front-loading washing machine, Martinez’ soapbox car didn’t make it to the end of the race.

“Nevertheless, it was super fun for all of us,” Leandro sums for the team, which included his sister Maru, brother-in-law Bryce, friend Kenan Kantarevic, and wife Kandice. “Our 11-year-old daughter Luciana was our honorary member. She didn’t meet the age requirement to officially be on the team, but she helped build the outer shell of the car.”

Talking about the experience, Luciana says she loved the creativity that teams used to make cars look like everything from a ballet slipper to a shaggy dog to the catfish-shaped car that won the race.

“I really admired just how Red Bull set up the whole experience, and the opportunity our family had to spend time together in a new and more relaxed environment,” she says.

Leandro says he loved “the rush of adrenaline as I came down the tallest launch ramp ever in the history of the race! But more than that, it was a real bonding experience for me with family and friends.”

Additionally, he likes setting goals and achieving them. “I think seeing me do that helps my daughter understand there is value in this,” he adds.

More than 35,000 gathered at the Iowa State Capitol Complex for this year’s Iowa race—a 10,000 person increase over 2022.

Making it more challenging than the previous iteration, Red Bull made the launch ramp taller to help soapbox cars gain greater speeds, and added more obstacles and intersections to test racers’ navigation skills.

While fast speeds through the 1,000foot course improve racers’ scores, teams are also judged on creativity and showmanship.

Towards that end, the Spin Cycle team began their run with a skit about a laundry day mis-

hap in which a clueless culprit puts a giant red sock into the wash with white shirts.

“We got pretty good scores for both the skit, and the creativity of the car,” says Leandro. “So, all in all, a nice showing.”

He came up with the concept for the washing machine soap-box car while working for Whirlpool’s internal advertising agency.

“One of their brands is Maytag,” he explains. “So that inspired me to draw up the idea of a washing machine on wheels!”

Although he now works for a sports marketing agency, Leandro decided to stick with the Spin Cycle theme for his car in this year’s race.

“Kandice’s great grandparents were some of the first Maytag factory employees,” he explains. “So, it was kind of a full circle moment to race in a washing-machine soapbox car so close to Newton, Iowa, where the Maytag company began.”

Rules for the race required that the homemade car couldn’t be put together from a prefabricated kit, had to use environmentally friendly materials, couldn’t include an engine, and had to have fully functional brakes and steering. For Leandro, designing the mechanical components proved most challenging.

“My degree is in marketing, and I have a hobby in woodworking, but neither me, nor Bryce who helped me build, had ever made a soapbox car. So, figuring out axles, brakes and steering was tough. We made a few mistakes, which is why the axle broke,” Leandro sums, “But I would absolutely do this again.”

Next time, though? He says “it’s going to be for the win!”

Ellie Bornhoeft will play women’s lacrosse for Cornell University’s Big Red next spring.

In her final game as a member of the New Trier Township High School (New Trier) girls’ lacrosse team on June 7, the 5-foot-10 middie came up huge, scoring the gamewinning goal off a free-position shot in the Trevians’ 8-7 overtime defeat of Loyola Academy (LA) in the state championship game at Hinsdale Central High School (HCHS).

“I was ready for the moment because we practiced a situation like that all season,” said Bornhoeft of the tally that completed her hat trick.

“The shot,” said New Trier assistant coach Abigail Squirrell, “wasn’t from Ellie’s favorite hash mark.”

A rhapsodic celebration ensued instantly.

Bornhoeft and seniors Sonja Keneally, a Tufts University-bound attack, and Allie Trukenbrod, a defender, served as New Trier’s captains. Keneally’s goal at the 9:02 mark of the fourth quarter upped New Trier’s lead to 6-4, and then she assisted on senior middie Meghan Riley’s goal a tad more than two minutes later.

But a three-goal lead on LA—the 16-time state champion, including 15 first-place finishes under current coach John Dwyer—is never a safe one. LA senior attack Annie Devine struck for a goal 82 seconds after Riley’s. Dwyer’s granddaughter Grace Dwyer then netted backto-back goals, with the second tally squaring it at 7-7 with 2:02 left in regulation.

“I’m proud of our girls,” said Dwyer, whose other granddaughter on the team, sophomore middie and leading scorer Molly Dwyer (85 goals), recorded a hat trick in the championship game. “They all played hard, played with heart.”

New Trier junior middie Avery Anderson authored a pair of goals, including one with only 2 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Trevians junior attack Riley Nolan’s goal off the first of senior Matty Meier’s two assists opened the scoring on June 7.

But Nolan’s big day was June 5, in New Trier’s 7-6 double-overtime defeat of HCHS in a state semifinal. Not only did she force overtime with a goal in the final minute of regulation, she also secured the win with a free-position goal with 32 seconds left in overtime.

LA senior middie Emily Couri poured in five goals in the other semifinal, a 13-6 defeat of Crystal Lake’s cooperative team.

New Trier junior and Northwestern University recruit Megan Gallagher (eight combined saves in two Final Four games) played a significant role in helping New Trier capture its second state title in four seasons.

“Our big thing this year was, ‘Play in the moment,’” Collins said. “Play that way and you’ll put together a series of wonderful moments.”

Lake Forest High School’s resolute boys’ lacrosse team wins second straight state championship with an 8-5 decision over New Trier Township High School.

Emmett Lee should have been writhing in pain instead of scoring a critical goal in last weekend’s boys’ lacrosse state championship game in Hinsdale.

The Lake Forest High School (LFHS) sophomore attackman sustained a slash to his left collarbone with his team leading New Trier Township High School (New Trier) 5-4 midway through the fourth quarter on June 7.

Moments later, he received a pass from senior middie Jack Walsh and whipped a low shot past the Trevians’ outstanding goalkeeper, senior Graham Stuart (eight saves).

“Adrenaline helped,” said Lee after his four-goal game powered the Scouts to an 8-5 victory and the program’s second straight state championship.

“I didn’t feel anything.”

But Lee and his fellow champions felt pure joy afterward. The Scouts (24-2), who trailed 3-1 after one quarter and 3-2 at intermission, outscored the Trevians 6-2 in the final 24 minutes, using a searing combination of skill and grit to become the first team to repeat as state champion since the Illinois High School

Association started to sanction boys’ lacrosse in 2018.

“First half, we took a lot of shots (20) and didn’t make many,” said LFHS coach and former Villanova University lacrosse player David Hone. “We did a much better job in the second half (6-for-16 shooting) deciding when and where to shoot against a highly skilled and well-coached team.

“We gained composure.”

New Trier (19-6) fired only 15 shots, five after halftime, in muggy conditions. But the Trevians trailed only 6-5 when senior attackman Trevor Martay scored his second goal of the game at 6:32 of the fourth quarter.

LFHS senior middie James Rappel came through with a quick reply, tallying an unassisted goal 32 seconds later.

“Lake Forest was overwhelming on ground balls,” said New Trier coach Adam Dickson, who guided the program to its best state finish since Tom Herrala coached the Trevians’ state title team in 2019. “Ton of credit to Lake Forest. They thwarted us and never stopped.”

middie and Lafayette College-bound Lucas Kroner (82 goals), scored twice and released a slick behind-the-back assist to Lee to cap the game’s scoring 28 seconds shy of the final horn.

“Sticking to the team mentality won it for us,” said Kroner, who, with 9:57 left in the fourth quarter, popped straight up to snare a pass from freshman middie Dante Federighi (goal, assist) and flicked a shot past Stuart before returning to Earth.

The entertaining goal gave the Scouts a 5-4 lead.

LFHS senior defender Daniel Van Camp caused a game-high three turnovers in front of stellar junior goalie Thomas Walsh (three saves vs. New Trier, 12 vs. Neuqua Valley High School in a 13-9 state semifinal win on June 5), and Walsh delivered a pair of assists before drawing two late fouls while burning the clock via his scrambling and dodging.

“Jack has been dealing with an ankle injury for a while,” Hone said. “What you saw from him there at the end was the heart of a Scout.”

At first glance, the water lilies seem almost familiar. A willow leans into the canvas with languid grace, lilac hues bloom and collapse into one another, and light scatters like breath across the surface of a pond. But step closer, and you’ll find that this is not Giverny—at least not the one you’ve seen on postcards.

This is something else entirely: not Monet’s garden, but its echo. A reimagining. A place where wildness and memory intermingle, rendered with both reverence and bold reinvention.

Opening July 1 at The Gallery in Lake Forest, “Whispers of the Wild: Reflections on Giverny” is the latest exhibition from artist Susan Bloch, a painter whose botanical works possess an immersive, almost cinematic quality. The series is not a recreation of Monet’s gardens but rather a response to them—a visual dialogue across centuries, one that invites viewers to wander, question, and linger.

Trained as a sculptor, Bloch brings a depth and dimensionality to her canvases that sets them apart. Her brushstrokes are confident, almost architectural, building layered compositions that feel at once lush and lived-in. A graduate of Syracuse University and the Art Institute of Chicago, Bloch approaches painting with a tactile intelligence. Her floral environments are not just seen; they are sensed. There’s a tangible sense of atmosphere—almost as if the paintings exhale around you.

Her works teem with quiet life: birds barely glimpsed in flight, reeds leaning into imagined wind, shadows that suggest something just out of sight. Rather than aiming for softness or sentimentality, Bloch’s paintings embrace subtle tension.

Her palette—while grounded in the hues of Giverny—ventures further, richer in saturation, bolder in stroke. Light behaves unpredictably. It sparks and recedes, glancing off surfaces or sinking beneath them.

The effect is less about stillness and more about suspended motion.

Though Impressionist in impulse, the work resists nostalgia. Bloch isn’t replicating a moment in time; she’s engaging with it, turning it over, examining what still lives inside it. The result is a series that feels both contemporary and timeless—paintings that whisper not just of nature, but of memory, perception, and the act of looking itself.

For all their beauty, these are not merely decorative works. There’s an invitation embedded in each canvas—an unspoken request to slow down, to pay attention, to inhabit the scene rather than simply observe it. In this way, the exhibition quietly challenges our modern pace. Here, wildness

is not just botanical—it’s existential.

While “Whispers of the Wild” nods to Monet, it never leans on him. Bloch’s vision remains distinctly her own. The garden is a point of origin, not a destination. The conversation she engages in—with the past, with the viewer, with the land—is ongoing and open-ended. It’s less homage and more continuation, a reminder that inspiration is a living thing, as subject to change as light on water.

There’s also an intriguing sense of time that threads through the series. Some pieces evoke early morning hush—others, the golden collapse of afternoon. Still oth-

ers shimmer with the softness of approaching dusk. Rather than fix time, Bloch lets it slip. Her paintings exist in a liminal space, shaped as much by recollection as by observation. The result is an uncanny sense of having been somewhere before—but not quite like this.

Viewers of the exhibition may find themselves gradually drawn into these layered environments, pulled not only into place but into mood. These are paintings that reward patience. They do not reveal themselves all at once, but rather unfold— like a path through a thicket—moment by moment.

“Whispers of the Wild: Reflections on Giverny” will be on view through August 31 at The Gallery, located at 202 E. Wisconsin Avenue in Lake Forest. An opening reception will be held Thursday, July 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., offering guests an opportunity to experience the work in person.

STARS & STRIPES FOREVER After six years of trying, Evanston photographer Doug Haight’s flag photo will be featured on the 2025 Forever stamp.

“Do you have any good photos of that flag?” asked Alcala, an award-winning graphic artist and USPS stamp designer responsible for more than 100 stamp designs. “We are always looking for them.”

Haight did in fact have photos of the flag. His wife’s ancestors started hanging Old Glory from a flagpole made from a pine tree on the property in the 1930s, replacing the flag as needed over the years.

In the months following Alcala’s request in 2019, Haight would take hundreds more photos of the flag, submitting dozens for consideration as the next USPS Forever flag stamp.

Haight’s efforts were rewarded. The best one of those images became the 2025 Forever flag stamp—one of only 19 Forever flag stamps in USPS history.

In addition to the Forever flag stamp coils that were released on December 1, 2010, “there are 18 different designs of flag stamps that have the Forever denomination,” says Timothy Norman, of the USPS Strategic Communications office, Illinois District. That includes Forever flag stamps issued in 2011, 2012 (4 designs), 2013 (4 designs), 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.”

But just what makes a great flag stamp?

“There’s no single factor,” says designer Alcala, who did the Forever flag stamps in 2019 and 2023 in addition to the one for 2025. “A lot depends on the viewer, but a great flag stamp should be accurate, should appear respectful, and perhaps honorific. The stamp should evoke positive patriotic feelings about the flag—a feeling of pride that represents both the user and the country.”

Beyond this, for any photo of a flag to be considered for inclusion on a stamp, the photo must be of a flag that is owned by the photographer.

“You can’t just go and shoot photos of any flag,” says Haight, owner of Fortune Fish Films, and board president of Evanston’s nonprofit Perspective Group and Photography Gallery—one of the few fine art photo galleries still operating in the Chicago area.

For Haight, attending the first-day-of-issue ceremony in Three Oaks was the nice cherry on top of his stamp adventure.

“I grew up in St. Joseph, Michigan, which is very close to Three Oaks,” he explains. “That they have the country’s largest Flag Day celebrations and that I would be honored so close to my childhood home for creating an image now featured on one of our country’s flag stamps seems unreal.”

One day soon, Haight says he’ll probably put a framed book of the stamps up on a wall at the Wisconsin retreat place, forever memorializing the family’s flag.

“It’s just so cool,” he smiles with a shake of the head. “So cool.”

What does it take to have your photo of the American flag featured on a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Forever stamp? Patience—and lots of it.

The process took more than six years for Evanston fine art photographer and filmmaker Doug Haight, whose flag photo is featured on the 2025 Forever flag stamp. The stamp, celebrated in a first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony in Three Oaks, Michigan, on June 7, came out just in time for this year’s Flag Day June 14.

LESLIE WILDE is a luxury travel expert with more than 30 years of experience.

Inspired by her grandmother's travels, Wilde transitioned from a career in sales and marketing to pursue her passion for travel. She began at a luxury North Shore travel agency, quickly advancing to Senior Vice President of Marketing, and later joined a luxury tour company in Chicago. In 2008, she acquired Hubbard Woods Travel in Winnetka where her leadership led the agency to regional acclaim. Eventually, she sold the agency to Valerie Wilson Travel, now part of Chase Travel Group. Wilde is known for creating unique, high-end travel experiences, leveraging her extensive network to offer personalized trips that go beyond typical tourist attractions.

It’s a film that understands how, sometimes, the simple act of putting one foot in front of the other can be enough to rebuild the world you thought you'd lost

In an era when Hollywood often chases CGI thrills or superhero machismo, The Salt Path feels like a small miracle: a British drama that dares to be quiet, contemplative, and still utterly cinematic. Marianne Elliott, celebrated onstage for War Horse and Angels in America, makes a delicately bruised transition to the screen with her feature debut. And what a debut it is—rooted in austerity, yet rich in emotional texture.

Adapted with disciplined restraint by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, the screenplay pares back Raynor Winn’s memoir—shedding flashbacks, political screeds, even their adult children—to focus tightly on the bond between Raynor (Gillian Anderson) and Moth ( Jason Isaacs) as they embark on their 630mile coastal odyssey after losing their home and hearing a dire medical verdict. This isn’t a paean to nature or selfhelp lit but a visceral portrait of desperation dressed up as escape.

Anderson, most often associated with supernatural investigations or suburban ennui, here delivers one of her best perfor-

mances: the uncertainty etched in her quiet gaze speaks volumes. Isaacs, too, surprises: his rugged avoidance of sentimentality— whether in physical weakness or emotional tremor—imbues Moth with a stubborn dignity, like a man still tethered to something larger than pathos alone .

Cinematographer Hélène Louvart turns each shoreline and cliff into a character, capturing grandeur and menace alike.

The film’s pacing is deliberate—it moves at the measured tempo of walking itself.

Some viewers may find it slow, others absorbing: it refuses the conventional dramatic surge in favor of sustained low rumble. That cash machine scene—a trembling bank balance, a twitching finger on the ATM keypad—becomes a masterclass in tension that lands harder than any crash or chase .

Where The Salt Path flirts with cliché— chanceencounter kindness, stoic abhorrence of modern life—it wisely balances it with grit: cold, hunger, pain. It's not picturesque escapism; it's a portrait of frayed people edging toward grace. As Moth quotes from Beowulf, and strangers mistake him for poet Simon Armitage, the script drips in literary selfawareness—but never enough to dull the raw edges.

June 27 marks the first day of Wimbledon—the perfect time to mix up a Pimm’s Cup. Known as the iconic cocktail of this famed British sporting event (and a favorite of Prince Charles), its refreshing, low-proof attributes allow for easy sipping while spectating. Perhaps it should be the iconic cocktail of summer!

If you loved the Broadway musical, SIX, you may be excited to know the same awardwinning producers have delivered another hot new UK hit to Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s (CST) The Yard. Featuring an irresistible '80s pop-inspired score, 42 Balloons made its North American debut last month and audiences are already raving.

This new musical by Kevin McCollum (Oh, Mary!, Rent), Andy Barnes and Wendy Barnes (SIX), and Sonia Friedman Productions (Merrily We Roll Along) is based on the unbelievable true story of Larry Walter—a truck driver who defied the odds (and FAA airspace regulations) to achieve his lifelong dream of flying.

In a lawn chair attached to 42 weather balloons, Larry—supported by his girlfriend and a community of unlikely heroes—ascended 16,000 feet into the blue sky above Los Angeles on July 2, 1982, and from the moment he landed, their lives would never be the same.

Funny, moving, and thrillingly staged, 42 Balloons poses the question—how far would you go for your dream … and how far would you be willing to fly?

This North American premiere is being produced by CST after a UK run at The Lowry, where it garnered audience and critical acclaim.

Running through June 29, the musical features a book, music, and lyrics by Jack Godfrey and direction by Ellie Coote.

“I'm unbelievably excited that 42 Balloons will be coming to Chicago Shakespeare Theater this year, particularly with its brilliant recent history of supporting, developing, and producing new musicals!” said Godfrey, whose vision for the show was partially inspired by iconic John Hughes films from the ‘80s. “I'm thrilled that we will have this amazing opportu-

Charlie McCullagh and Evelyn Hoskins star as Larry Walters and Carol Van Deusen, reprising their roles from the UK run last year. They lead an ensemble cast that also includes Daniel Assetta, Kailin Brown, Devin Cortez,Cameron Anika Hill, Josh Hoon Lee, Minju Michelle Lee, Austin Nelson Jr., Morgan Schoenecker, Lucia Spina, and Akron Watson. Understudies include Julia Bain, Lacey Jack, Joshua Messmore, and Luke Nowakowski.

Producer Kevin McCollum has said that he instantly connected with Larry and his desire to fly beyond his own limitations.

“One of my favorite aspects of being a producer is being able to help shepherd work by new voices,” he added. “I was inspired by Jack Godfrey’s ability to capture the specificity of this real-life story and transform it into a universal journey that soars to the heavens.”

Ingenuity drives Lake Forest native and urological surgeon R. Joseph Hartman, MD. It’s partly why he’s one of the featured painters at this weekend’s Artists on the Bluff ’s Summer Arts Festival.

R. Joseph Hartman, MD is a urological surgeon, a past winner of the Lake Bluff BBQ Society Ribfest contest, and a featured painter at art festivals.

But don’t call him a Renaissance man.

His late grandfather Robert “Papa” Zellner was the quintessential Renaissance man. All he did was work as a chemical engineer and patent lawyer, paint, sew, cook, bake, build things, and turn the library into his second home.

Mr. Zellner made other Renaissance men look like average Joes.

“If he couldn’t fix something, it was definitely broken,” says Dr. Joe Hartman, a 2002 Lake Forest High School (LFHS) graduate and a resident of Lake Forest. “I fondly remember flying radio-controlled airplanes early Sunday mornings at the high school football field that he built entirely. And I think of him every time I take off on an airplane because Papa taught me about airfoils and air pressure and lift.

“Oh, and he did push-ups and pull-ups every day until the very end,” adds the father of four.

Hartman, 42, flexes his curiosity daily.

“I see myself as a curious man, not as a Renaissance man,” insists the humble Hartman, in his eighth year as a urological surgeon for Advocate Aurora Health in southern Wisconsin. “When you try something new, you appreciate it more, appreciate what it takes to do it right.

Curiosity begets appreciation, right? My current ‘Everest’ is striving to make the best eggs over easy. Been working on it for two weeks now. It’s driving my wife (Katie) crazy.”

Hartman, the eighth of 10 children of retired OBGYN Robert and Margaret, started painting (oils and watercolor) in his basement during the COVID-19 pandemic, hoping it would help him relax and decompress. It did. While practicing, one

Look for Hartman’s paintings of local golf holes, along with his paintings of Market Square and the Lake Forest train station, at this year’s festival, which falls on Father’s Day weekend. The former caddie at Onwentsia Club and Knollwood Club has depicted holes at Shoreacres, Deerpath Golf Course, and Lake Bluff Golf Club on canvas.

“As a surgeon, anything less than perfect is unacceptable,” says Hartman, who was a pre-med student at Lake Forest College, attended medical school at Northwestern Uni-

and noticed an amazing sunset. I stopped walking. I wanted to look at it a little longer.”

Back in his high school days as a wide receiver/defensive back/kick returner for LFHS football teams and the boyfriend of his future wife—Joe and Katie attended three proms together—Hartman could see himself becoming a doctor someday while mopping floors in the operating rooms at Lake Forest Hospital.

“I had an awesome opportunity at Goldman Sachs for two years in high school but decided that field wasn’t for me,” says Hartman, who, in addition to serving as a caddie, bagged groceries at Don’s Finest Foods and worked as a teller at Lake Forest Bank as a teen.

Joe had exactly $13—each bill crisp, no doubt—in his pocket when he and Katie went on their first date together at ParKing miniature golf course in Lincolnshire.

The married couple welcomed their first child, Robert (now 12), into the world while Joe was at Harvard Medical School.

Their other children are Rosie, 9; Ann Marie, 7; and Maggie, 5.

“All my girls love to paint, and I love the times I get to paint with them,” Hartman says.

Kitslaar completed the work circa 1917.

“I never met my great-grandfather John, but I feel his presence when I paint,” says Hartman. “In the back of my tiny brain there’s the thought, ‘When I’m gone, maybe someone in my family will look at one of my paintings and have a similar feeling.’”
