End game nears for Highland Park Lake Forest’s golf course

H

ighland Park Country Club will cease golf operations at the end of the year if the Highland Park City Council gives the Park District of Highland Park the green light on its plan to turn the golf course into open parkland.

The park district currently operates 18-hole courses at both the country club and Sunset Valley Golf Course.

Both courses are losing money, and the park district made one golf course part of its master plan in 2017, according to board President Brian Kaplan.

The Board of Commissioners of the Park District of Highland Park unanimously voted July 25 at West Ridge Center to ask the city council to let the park district terminate golf operations at the end of the year.

The council will consider the request at 7:30 p.m. August 28

Karam Foundation aids Syrian refugees

L

ina Attar devotes her life to planting hope in a part of the world where dreams of success are a scarce commodity.

Attar co-founded the Karam Foundation in 2007 to help people in need anywhere in the world, but she shifted the focus in 2011 to building hope among Syrian refugees when civil war there became what she describes as the “worst humanitarian crisis since World War II.” A Lake Forest resident since 2008, Attar was born in Brooklyn.

She spent her middle, high school and undergraduate college years in Aleppo, Syria, between

The city owns the country club property, which the park district operates under the terms of a 99-year lease. The lease began in 2015, according to Kaplan. The city had run the club through a management company for more than 20 years since acquiring the real estate.

The country club has lost more than $1 million over the last four years, according to Liza McElroy, park district executive director. During the city’s last two years of stewardship, the combined loss in 2013 and 2104 was $455,916. The two-year total of red ink for 2015 and 2016 was $576,600. The projected loss for 2017 is $340,498.

Should the park district continue to operate the country club as a golf facility, it will require renovations of between $1.1 million and $3.39 million, according to McElroy.

Sunset Is Undergoing Renovation

Sunset is closed while it undergoes a $7 million renovation project this year, according to McElroy. She said it is expected to reopen in July 2018. The country club has served the community’s golf needs this year. Between 2013 and 2016, Sunset lost $280,062.

Not only is Attar touching teens in the Middle East, she is doing the same with Lake Forest High School sophomore Maliha Yousuf, who spent the summer working as an intern for the foundation. Yousuf feels it gives her a chance to make a difference in the world.

“I am doing something to help,” said Yousuf. “I have to be doing something.”

PASTA PERFECTO: Pastificio celebrates 4 decades of delish

W

hen Patricia Galli offered to help her stay-at-home mom start her own business, her mom said “no, grazie.”

“I didn’t send my daughter to college to work hard physically,” said Elsa Amidei, who is glad she changed her mind about letting Patricia join Pastificio, the Highwood take-out eatery that specializes in Northern Italian cuisine.

“My daughter loves what she’s doing, and she did a wonderful job, a better job than I did,” said Elsa, who retired about 15 years ago.

Patricia gave her dad credit for being so open minded when the store opened in 1977.

“My dad, Marco Amidei, is a native Italian, and they were not very open to having their women doing things on their own,” she said.

“There weren’t many women in business at that time with my mom’s courage, strength and innovative ideas.”

Back in the beginning, Elsa’s husband helped her order the machines from Italy, which were so

expensive they had to put a mortgage on the house.

“We started with nothing, because 40 years ago most people didn’t know what pasta was,” said Elsa.

Patricia added, “Growing up, I remember my mom saying that she wished she could show people what real Italian food and pasta was, because they only had Chef Boyardee.”

Patricia Galli explained that the recipes have been the same, and although she’s introduced new things, everything is based on what her mom taught her.

Elsa said she made her grandmother’s tortellacci recipe, and other recipes belonged to her mother.

Elsa emigrated with her family from Italy after the war in 1950.

Her mother was born in Missouri, and when she was nine-months-old her parents went back to Italy to visit her grandfather, who was enlisted in the army. Elsa said he never came back, but he loved the United States and his nickname was Chicago.

Because Elsa’s mother had citizenship, Elsa automatically became

“My daughter, Tatiana Galli, went to Italy to get her Master in Culinary Arts degree and fell in love with the executive chef she interned with,” said Patricia. She and her husband, Mauro Galli, are thrilled that their daughter and her fiancée, Simone Cipriani, will soon be visiting from Florence, Italy. The couple taught a cooking class at Pastificio on August 18.

Both classes were booked within five minutes with a waiting list of 42 people. Patricia added, “My love is teaching and I feel like I teach every day and I’d like to start up again once a month.”

“I love my business more now than when I was 22,” said Patricia.

“I learned a tremendous amount of diligence from my mom.”

Since her mom retired, Patricia enjoys the excitement of trying new things by request -- such as shipping and preparing gluten-free items.

“Whenever I hire someone I tell them that we are not a Jewel, we are not a Mariano’s, so when they have a request never say no,” said Patricia. “We always try to accommodate our customers.”

Onion Garden: Organic food made fast

ho says fast food can’t be healthy? Though there is no shortage of fast-casual restaurants in Highland Park, the new Onion Garden has created a niche by offering organic takeout, delivery and catering.

“We cook our food to order, which usually takes five to 10 minutes, and if we’re really busy 15,” said Tim Carden, chef/owner. “It’s really about the whole grains and vegetables, and by cooking the vegetables to order, the zucchini isn’t sitting and getting soggy.”

Carden said most people order food to go, but the small space and outdoor seating area are able to accommodate about 30 guests during busy lunch and Sunday brunch hours.

Onion Garden opened in March at 1788 Second Street on the lower level, next to Bluemercury on Central Avenue.

The restaurant was originally part of the Corner Bakery space.

“The Corner Bakery did all of their catering down here, so when I came here there was a lot of preexisting kitchen equipment, which was very helpful,” said Carden.

Carden became interested in health food after he started gaining weight while working in high-end restaurants and hotels in downtown Chicago about eight or nine years ago.

This led to Carden’s decision to work with people who had food sensitivities. He held a cooking class for a family with celiac disease (a hypersensitivity to gluten, which leads to difficulty in digesting food), where he taught them how to prepare pizzas and spring rolls.

Carden has also worked with families who have spouses with cancer who follow a strict eating regimen.

Later, Carden began working on the North Shore as a private chef/ caterer for three or four years and was looking to expand his operation in catering and meal delivery. “This Highland Park location works for the proximity of my clientele within a 15-minute radius,” he said.

Carden emphasized that the Onion Garden has fried potatoes, not french fries, and all vegetables are fresh. The potatoes are sliced in half and roasted in coconut oil and fresh herbs, so they’re crispy.

One of Onion Garden’s specials is the Meat Eater that is made with about 2.5 ounces of filet mignon, a fried egg, arugula, red onion and red chili.

Brunch is served all day long. One recurring special is the coconut blueberry sprouted wheat pancakes with syrup. Banana fritter pancakes and Yukon gold and sweet potato hash browns are also favorites.

Carden began cooking for his younger siblings when he was about 14, and he worked part time in restaurants over the summer at 16.

Today, he enjoys cooking for his young family and sneaks in healthy vegetables whenever he can.

Highland Park High School senior defensive back Noah Spitz all revved up for more game-turning plays

T

he hard-hitting cornerback who keeps opposing wide receivers up at night on the eve of a football game happens to be a big-time nap guy.

“I love taking naps,” says Highland Park senior Noah Spitz, also a slot receiver. “I can nap for three hours straight, sometimes four. I can nap anywhere, anytime.”

Spitz — now a 5-foot-8, 170pounder, a year after finishing the 2016 season as a 5-7, 153pounder — produced more than a few eye-popping moments on football fields last fall. The Giant got off to a sensational start, burning visiting Hersey with a pair of touchdown receptions (56 and 8 yards) and coming down with an interception in a 40-18 season-opening victory.

Eight weeks later, with the

stakes considerably higher in the regular-season finale against visiting Vernon Hills High School, Spitz topped that august effort in late August with an interception in each of the Cougars’ final two possessions.

The second pick clinched

attended four football camps (Penn, Princeton, Northwestern University and Washington University in Missouri) this summer. “Noah brings a lot of swagger to the field, and he’s certainly a leader who plays hard-nosed football on every play. Not the biggest guy, but

after practices and games,” says Spitz, the starting second baseman on the school’s varsity baseball team last spring and the younger brother of former Giants gymnastics standout Avery Spitz (now at Tulane University). “Lots of stim [electrical stimulation] and ice. Our trainer [David Fowkes] was great; he did an amazing job getting me ready to play each week.”

No matter what he played as a youngster — football or basketball or baseball — Spitz competed in a sport to make plays. Game-turning plays.

Resounding plays.

Noah Spitz, simply a participant in a sport?

Never.

“He was always one of the most athletic kids and one of the most physical kids in the games we played before high school, and he continues to be that guy,” says HP senior running back/linebacker and good f riend Ryan Brincks.

“Noah is thicker [because of time in the weight room] this year, but he’s still fast. “Quite a player and a great energy guy,” Giants football coach Joe Horeni says of the all-CSL North selectee who

his heart is huge.

“What he did in that game, against Vernon Hills, being where he had to be at the right time, twice, with the game on the line — that’s Noah Spitz, a kid who will always be there for you,” the coach adds.

The most remarkable part of Spitz’s junior football season had nothing to do with a stat.

field North in a postseason opener in October. But he had to relinquish his duties on the offensive side of the ball in order to maintain his value as a feisty cornerback (3 INTs, 10 pass breakups, countless jarring hits).

“I got treatment for the injury pretty much every day, while I ate lunch at school, and

emanates from a clean collision with a ball carrier near the line of scrimmage. It’s the sound of … silence.

“I like it when our team quiets a crowd in an away game more than I like it when our team pumps up our home crowd,” says Spitz, who also rushed for a TD and scored a

TD on a botched punt attempt by an opponent in his junior season.

A Little Giants football player who often got 30 touches in a game as a running back in his grade-school years, Spitz didn’t fully embrace the sport of football until his freshman season. HP’s frosh squad went 9-0 in 2014, with its first-team defense allowing a scant one TD all season.

“That team,” Spitz recalls, “had a really good bond, great chemistry. We didn’t just have an outstanding defense; we also had a bruising offensive line.”

Spitz played cornerback back then, too, before shifting to safety for the sophomore team in ’15. He collected six interceptions in each season. His sophomore team finished with an 8-1 record.

“Our class is not accustomed to losing,” says Spitz, who is looking at Bowdoin College, Amherst College, Carnegie Mellon University and Washington (Mo.) University but has yet to decide if football will be a part of his life as a collegian.

His roles for his final Giants grid team are more definitive.

“I plan to encourage everybody and get my teammates amped up for every play,” says Spitz, who continues to draw inspiration f rom his hardworking parents, Joel and Margo. “I like pouring my heart into every minute of every game, since there are only nine games in the regular season.

“I like to tackle, hit hard, and I like to play with an edge, with a little anger.”

Sweet dreams, opposing wide receivers.

Notable: HPHS opens its football season Aug. 25 (7 p.m.) against visiting Libertyville High School. The Wildcats finished with a 5-5 record last fall, losing 42-17 to BradleyBourbonnais in a Class 7A playoff opener. Had both LHS and HPHS won their playoff openers last fall, they would have faced each other in the next round.

Swinging for the fences Rutkowski figures to be strikingly good during her final season with the Ramblers

T

he soundtrack in the days of a young Nina Rutkowski was that of two golf clubs striking golf balls off range tees at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in Lemont.

Over and over and over again.

Rutkowski was 3, and her parents, Tony and Kari, produced the monotonous “music” while taking lessons from professional instructor Lee Miller.

“That’s where my life as a golfer started for me, on a back range,” says Rutkowski, a senior and fourth-year varsity golfer at Loyola Academy. “I was told I rested, off to the side, on a blanket — probably on a classic-pink blanket — during my parents’ golf lessons.”

Her goal these days: shoot red numbers for the Ramblers.

The Park Ridge resident finished runner-up at a pair of Mid America Junior Golf Tour (MAJGT) events this summer and shot a medalist round of 79 in Loyola Academy’s season-opening 339-345 defeat of visiting Prospect at Glencoe Golf Course on Aug. 12.

Rutkowski then paced the Ramblers to first place at the Rockford Invitational with a third-place showing on Aug. 14.

“My dad got me interested in golf and was my first instructor,” says Rutkowski, whose swing coach ended up being none other than Miller, who attended Tony and Kari’s wedding. “My dad was a pretty good teacher, very knowledgeable. He’s also a golf-gear geek who finds all things about golf interesting.”

When daughter defeated dad for the first time — back when Nina was in middle school, in a nine-hole round — the two celebrated the feat at a McDonald’s, located maybe a few par-5s f rom Park Ridge Country Club. Nina ordered a caramel sundae, and her proud father enjoyed an ice cream cone.

Nina Rutkowski treated future Ramblers teammate Margaret Hickey (LA Class of ’17) to quite a display of golf on the first day at the Chick Evans Junior Amateur in the summer of 2014. Rutkowski was an incoming f reshman, Hickey a rising sophomore.

Rutkowski shot a 73 at Itasca Country Club.

“I was amazed the first time I watched her play a competitive round of golf,” recalls the Creighton University-bound Hickey. “Nina made a lot of long putts that day, and she was consistent, accurate.

“Right off the bat, you notice she has a really strong and flexible swing — one of the best swings I’ve ever seen,” adds Hickey, a Glencoe resident who won the Chick Evans Junior Amateur this summer with a 5-and-3 defeat of St. Charles’ Nicole Jordan on July 27. “She won’t let the pressure get to her [in 2017]. I’m expecting a strong season from her this fall — as a golfer and as a leader.”

Rutkowski, no surprise, was named co-captain [with Tatum Koehn] of this fall’s LA squad.

Rutkowski finished in 13th place at the Class AA state tournament in each of her first two years on varsity, helping the team capture a runner-up trophy each season.

Her 156 (76-80) in ’15 was the team’s best two-day performance.

“A great player, a fun player to watch,” says Ramblers firstyear head coach Carli McKenney (nèe Gregorin), a Carmel

Rutkowski completed her first 18-hole round at the age of 7 and started playing junior tournaments four years later.

She had tried soccer, softball, gymnastics, tennis, “pretty much every sport,” Rutkowski remembers. But the fun-loving, funny, approachable athlete eventually settled on a sport that demands a sound mental approach and sound approach shots.

The other sport with approach shots — tennis? Rutkowski, fond of action at the net, still plays that on occasion.

She reads books when she isn’t reading greens. The first Harry Potter book came out when she was two months old, and she got around to reading it in the third grade. The other seven books in the series? Rutkowski devoured all of them.

She saw the eighth Harry Potter movie with a friend at a midnight showing, after dressing up as one of the characters.

“One of my good friends [Phil Cole] in my industry handed me this idea of women gathering to learn from one another and to share perspectives, and I started it as a perk for my clients,” says the 46-year-old Marks, a 1989 Lake Forest High School graduate who majored in business, economics and studio art at Lake Forest College and worked as a grain analyst in the research department at the Chicago Board of Trade in her early 20s. “But it changed and became something bigger; our numbers grew each year, and I sensed the women, depending on the topic, became more and more determined and inspired to work with solutions in mind after our get-togethers.

“Women,” she adds, “are making more decisions, leading more countries, running more companies. We love to talk, but we’re doing more than that. We’re also doers.”

The doers stuffed more than 300 backpacks with school supplies for students at a community picnic held at Foss Park Golf Course in North Chicago on July 22. Women in the Know also partnered with a Waukegan-based organization, Furthering the Lives of Young (FLY), to identify talented and passionate high school students who have limited resources but boundless potential to shine in college.

On the organization’s website, at the top of the “About Amie” page, is a quote by Marks. The words truly capture the essence of the group: “One woman may have knowledge, strength and success … many women together can move mountains.”

Women in the Know put together a three-part fall series in 2014 and entitled it “Tackling the Matter of Teenage Mental Health and Suicide.” Each session at The Lake Forest Club was packed.

Women in the Know held a summer forum on the 2016 Election last summer and congregated a couple of times (April 28 and June 2) for something lighter and liberating — “Spring Cleaning!!

Marks met her future husband, Tom, at a charity event hosted by Providence-St. Mel School in Chicago. She was 23. Residents of Lake Forest since 2006, Amie and Tom celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversary on August 19th. They have a 10-year-old son, T.J., who lobbied his mother, in the living room, before receiving the OK to play competit i v e h o c k e y.

He has also played lacrosse, sailed and golfed.

“He’s a happy, involved kid who has great passion for everything,” says Marks, who played softball and tennis in high school and kept busy with commitments to the student council, yearbook and student newspaper at LFHS. “I love to hang out with my son in my free time, and I love to play tennis.”

Her favorite exchanges off the court at LFC were the communicative ones with Dr. Carolyn Tuttle, currently a professor of

economics and the chair of the Economic, Business and Finance Department at the college.
