A

s the popularity of shortterm rentals grows across the globe, North Shore municipalities are learning how to properly govern the new sharing economy. As of July 1, there were approximately 50 North Shore homes advertised on Airbnb, ranging from single bedrooms to entire mansions. Some northern suburbs don’t allow short-term rentals at all, some are exploring regulations, and others are cautiously observing the trend before deciding whether to take action. In the spring of 2016, Wilmette officials addressed shortterm rentals when neighbors on a quiet cul-de-sac in west Wilmette complained that a resident was renting out four rooms in her home. A Special Zoning Committee held a series of public meetings, ultimately recommending that the village board take no action:

ore than 130 people joined hands on three North Shore beaches July 3 to send a message about the importance of protecting the Great Lakes. The participants held hands at 9 a.m. as part of All Hands On Deck, an organized effort on more than 50 beaches along the Great Lakes stretching from Pt. Breeze, N.Y., on Lake Ontario to North Avenue Beach in Chicago on Lake Michigan, and beyond. In Illinois, people gathered on beaches from Chicago and Evanston to Waukegan, including more than 80 in Lake Bluff, over 35 in Highland Park and at least 20 in Lake Forest. “It’s been part of my life since I was a little girl,” said Sandy Ragsdale of Lake Bluff.
