Backyard Barbecue: More than a store BY EMILY SPECTRE DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
A
n unassuming former garage at 535 Green Bay Road has been transformed into the Backyard Barbecue Store’s new location, with a top-to-bottom rehab resulting in a charming yet rustic new space. The building, behind Millen Hardware and Tsing Tao restaurant, was most recently a car wash, but it was built in the 1950s as an alignment shop. Backyard Barbecue owner and Wilmette native Dan Marguerite had a vision for the building that included rehabbing it from the outside in. “We started just with a shell,” Marguerite said. Having been built with a team of locals — architect Chuck Cook, landscape designer Jim O’Brien and contractor Michael Coletto — the Backyard Barbecue’s new location is spectacular. “I still walk in here and love the way it looks,” remarked Marguerite, who seems stunned by the building’s

E
very 10 years, Jill Rhodes likes to try something new. A decade ago it was an Ironman triathlon. This time it’s a marathon – and not just any race: on March 11 Rhodes will run the Antarctica Marathon. “Every decade I decide to do something big,” said Rhodes, a Lake Forest resident and cyber security exeutive. “This marathon is it for this decade.” For Rhodes this adventure is not about another notch in a marathon belt. She has done four, including the 26-mile, 385yard leg of the Ironman. In that event she also swam 2.4 miles and rode a bicycle 112 miles. Her last marathon was in 2010. The Antarctica race will be a
