C

hicago is known for its standup comedy, but since Wilmette Theatre’s launching of Friday Funnies in February, the North Shore suburb is developing its own reputation as a comedic hotspot.

Hosted by comedian and media personality Jenniffer Weigel, the Friday Funnies are held on the first Friday of each month and feature comedians from all over Chicagoland. The next one will be held on Oct. 7, 2016.

“We’ve had a very nice variety of comedians,” Wendy Sharon, executive director of the Wilmette Theatre, told DailyNorthShore.com.

our years ago, Dr. Phyllis Marx had to put her husband’s shoes and socks on for him because he was so big he couldn’t bend over. Bruce Marx was on oxygen, insulin and had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease resulting from morbid obesity. Today he is 130 pounds lighter and no longer suffers from any of these ailments thanks to his wife’s culinary creations and her push for him to lead a healthy life. In the process, she, too, lost 100 pounds.

‘Camp Night’ lights up plenty of young lives

T

he written words will stick with Regi Carfagnini forever.

The Winnetka resident and mother of two daughters read them while going through some thank-you notes from young campers. The children had attended a House In The Wood camp in Delavan, Wisconsin, for many a life-altering experience made possible by the North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement.

The words made Carfagnini pause.

The words also moved Carfagnini.

“I got misty-eyed when I read his note,” Carfagnini, volunteer maven, recalls. “He wrote, ‘When I’m at home I wear shoes and lace them tight so I can run fast if I need to. At camp, I go barefoot.’

“That says it all,” she adds. “The kids, many of them are afraid to be

outside at home, and they arrive at camp with fear. Some of them are angry. It doesn’t take them long to consider the camp their get-away, a safe place to learn and have fun.”

Carfagnini and Wilmette resident Ann Adams are co-chairs of “Camp Night”, formerly known as “Glitter Ball”, the annual fundraiser for House In The Wood.

This year’s event is set for Oct. 29, at the Modern Wing of The Art Institute of Chicago. The goal is to raise $500,000, with most of the money earmarked for 400 camp scholarships. Campers don’t just head north to splish and splash in a lake and consume S’mores nightly. They form friendships, develop leadership skills and strengthen their comprehension of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

“We believe ZIP codes shouldn’t determine a child’s future,” Adams says. “The impact is real. House In The Wood changes lives.

“ ‘Camp Night’, ” she adds, “is the first step in the process.”

The night should be a spectacular one. Tony Mantuano, chef of four-star Spiaggia, will provide his signature cuisine at Terzo Piano, located on the third level of the Modern Wing. There will be a silent auction, a live auction and the inaugural presentation of the House In The Wood Hall of Fame Award to Kathleen and Michael Elliott, a pair of generous supporters for more than 20 years.

A video short, produced by New Trier High School’s Media, Speech & Theatre Department, will debut at the event. It spotlights the impact House In The Wood continues to have on its campers.

She marvels at what great shape he’s in. "I did a lot of work to help him reach his goal whether he liked it or not,” said Phyllis, an obstetrics and gynecology physician. When Bruce went to the hospital at her insistence because he couldn’t cross the street to get in the car after dinner, he spent a week as an inpatient. She didn’t think he was going to make it to the end of 2012.

“I was in a wound doctor’s office with ulcers on my legs, and I could barely breathe,” he said.

When he met pulmonologist Neil Freedman M.D. at NorthShore Highland Park Hospital, the doctor told him that he’d better lose a lot of weight or he’d be back in the hospital soon, and he recommended the cardiac pulmonary rehab program at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital.

Upon completion of the 26 sessions, one can stay on and use the facility as a health club. “The difference between the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest (rehab center) and a standard health club is the fact that it’s staffed by professional nurses from the hospital and two fulltime exercise therapists,” he said.

“When you walk in you get checked out for your oxygen level, heart rate and blood pressure, and again when you leave.”

Bruce didn’t let being on oxygen deter him from participating in the American Lung Association Walk in September 2012 with his wife and daughter Jennifer Marx. His determination encouraged several members of the rehab center to join him on the five-mile journey.

Phyllis said, “They think of Bruce as their poster child and they always tell everybody about his successes and then a lot of people come over and talk to him and say how did you do it?” He inspired patients of all ages, and stopped using oxygen about six to eight months later.

They converted their daughter’s bedroom into an exercise room, complete with a rowing machine, an aerodyne bicycle and an elliptical, which are the same machines he uses in rehab.

“Other than keeping the same diet, we both do other things differently, as Phyllis would rather go on a bike ride or out for long walks,” he said.

sizes, portions and labels everything for him.

Fruits and vegetables are for the most part free points on Weight Watchers, so Bruce eats five pieces of fruit a day, plus oatmeal or eggs for breakfast and a big salad for lunch. Instead of giving up bagels, he’ll make a half sandwich on a skinny bagel.

“I can snack all day on Weight Watchers, and for dinner Phyllis cooks great meals,” he said. “She makes a variety of chicken, and lots of fish dishes with wonderful sauces. It’s like going to a restaurant every night.” The couple eats red meat about once a week, and chocolate snacks abound as long as portions and Weight Watchers points are counted.

Phyllis believes in mixing about 10 vegetables into a salad.

“I figure the more colors you have in your diet the more nutrients you have and that way you don’t need to take supplements, because you get what you need from your food,” she said.

Since they’ve both become physically fit, they can participate in more activities together.

They’ve done a lot more traveling, and on a Mediterranean cruise vacation he even climbed to the top of the Acropolis. Bruce said he enjoys hiking and isn’t worried about keeping up with the family.

Bruce retired nine years ago as manufacturing manager for an international chemical company that made printing ink. He’s on the advisory council at the Northwestern University School of Professional Studies, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

“It’s a national foundation that’s donated money to 40 different universities in the United States to set up these programs,” he said. “It’s a peer-driven program so you don’t have professors lecturing.” A few years ago, Bruce coordinated a class titled "Nuremberg Legacy" about Holocaust war crimes that he taught with a retired judge.

Though she’s been meaning to retire, Phyllis works twice a week doing clinical research and seeing patients who participate in research trials. She also works a labor and delivery shift at NorthShore Evanston Hospital, teaching students and residents. “I flunked retirement,” she said.

After being together for 37 years, the couple counts on each other, while Phyllis Marx continues to count calories for two.

STANDOUT STUDENT: Sam Shipko New Trier’s motto to serve others inspires volunteer work with Lost Boyz

N

orthfield native Sam Shipko finds inspiration in quotes that he applies to his life as a volunteer at the nonprofit Lost Boyz Inc., which serves at-risk youth in Chicago’s South Shore community.

In particular, Shipko drew inspiration from the motto of his alma mater, New Trier High School, from which he graduated in 2014: “to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity.”

Now a junior at DePaul University in Chicago, Shipko said his New Trier teachers encouraged him to give back to the community, serve those less fortunate and work to make a change in the lives of others.

At New Trier, Shipko volunteered as a senior helper, where he served as a mentor for a freshman advisory group and also tutored elementary students through a social service group. Through those experiences Shipko discovered how following New Trier’s motto can be rewarding.

“I just really liked working with the kids,” he told DailyNorthShore. com.

So when he learned about Lost Boyz on the professional networking site LinkedIn, Shipko was intrigued by the group’s commitment to transforming the lives of at-risk youth in Chicago’s South Shore community. Unsure where South Shore was even located, Shipko decided to contact Lost Boyz Executive Director LaVonte Stewart directly, who invited him to meet in person. “He brought me in right away and made me feel like family,” Shipko said.

Stewart started Lost Boyz in 2008 to give back to the community where he grew up. Through Little League baseball and softball programs, the group mentors and teaches cultural awareness and civic engagement to girls and boys from the South Shore neighborhood. Shipko said Lost Boyz not only competes in little league programs where participants play games all over Chicago, but it also

encourages civic engagement through such as activities as partnering with the Chicago Police Department, cleaning up local parks and providing academic tutoring.

While Shipko is busy as a fulltime student studying finance at DePaul, he still finds time to volunteer with Lost Boyz two to three times a week at a South Shore community center. Shipko serves as a mentor, provides tutoring and helps out with coaching.

He also schedules virtual tutoring sessions, so he can provide assistance to kids who can’t make the in-person sessions.

Shipko has made real connections at Lost Boyz and is invested in helping these kids transform their futures. He’s currently helping one high school student with college and financial applications, as well as planning a trip to the University of Illinois at Chicago, where the student hopes

to attend. “I truly value working with the kids and forming relationships. We have an opportunity to make a change,” Shipko said.

The experience has been eye opening for Shipko, who has learned to appreciate the advantages of growing up on the North Shore. He is also appreciative of the opportunity provided by Stewart who has also served as a mentor in stewardship. “(Stewart) has given me an opportunity to grow as an individual and as someone who wants to help the community,” Shipko said.

Shipko hopes that other students growing up on the North Shore will be inspired to give back to those less fortunate. “Find an organization or a group that you are passionate about and contact that organization to get involved,” he said.

And he remains deeply committed to the Lost Boyz mission.

“The biggest thing that keeps me going at Lost Boyz is that I believe it has limitless possibility,” Shipko said.

Dressing up for New Year’s Max & Benny’s rolls out the linen cloth for Jewish high holidays

o into Max and Benny’s restaurant in Northbrook 363 days a year and it looks like any North Shore delicatessen.

Go there for dinner on the Jewish New Year and customers dine on linen tablecloths while eating traditional holiday fare.

Max and Benny’s serves Rosh Hashanah dinner from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3 at its Northbrook restaurant on Waukegan Road, offering customers an opportunity to enjoy a holiday meal before going to synagogue or spending time with family.

“If customers are going to come here for their holiday meal we want to make it special for them,” said Jon Soble, the restaurant’s director of catering. “This is how we dress it up so they feel special,” he added referring the table cloths and more formal atmosphere.

Soble said reservations are a must as many families return each year, often expanding their circle.

“Community is important to people,” said Soble. “We have people who come back year after

year asking to be seated by another family requesting the comradery of family and friends.

The meal is served family style and costs $32 for adults and $16 for children under 10. Soble said there are the traditional apples and honey along with customary

“Apples and honey are special for the holiday,” said Soble.

“Apples because it is fall and honey for a sweet life of success in the new year.”

Placed on each table is a

traditional round challah, an egg bread. Soble said one comes plain and the other with raisins, but customers can order all of one or the other.

Along with the apples, honey and challah, Soble said diners get homemade chopped liver and

want to make the traditional blessing.

Each table will also have a dessert plate with honey cake, frosted banana cake and flourless chocolate cake.

“The apples and honey are traditional for the holiday,” Soble said. “Everything else is traditional Jewish food.”

There is no food served off the menu and the restaurant closes at 2 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3 to let the staff get ready for the holiday meal, according to Soble. He said the restaurant will be open during its regular hours until 2 p.m. Oct. 3 for people looking for a regular lunch from the everyday menu.

“We have one synagogue group that comes here every year after services,” said Soble.

For people who want to eat at home and let someone else do the cooking, Max and Benny’s also offers catering. Soble said package dinners vary in price depending on the number of diners.

Main courses include chicken, brisket or a combination of the two. There is also turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce.

Customers get a choice of sweet and sour meatballs or chopped liver, honey glazed carrots or fresh green beans and oven brown potatoes or rice pilaf. All orders include challah and matzo ball soup.

ou’re alone on the driveway shooting hoops on a sunny afternoon. You grip the basketball’s pebbly surface and feel a zap of unspoken communication between your fingertips and the ball.

You fire a jump shot and it drops in, swish. You proceed to sink everything you’ve got in your game. Fade-aways, free throws, layups (lefty and righty), long three-pointers from “downtown” and every point on the compass.

The law of percentages is magically suspended. Every shot

goes in. Why is this flawless performance possible? You know the answer all too well. Three words...

Nobody is watching.

The universe has non-negotiable rules. One is that when someone watches you, your performance often disappoints you both.

This became apparent back in

Little League baseball. In an everyday game, you were a decent hitter, usually getting on base, sometimes knocking a long ball.

Until the day your dad came to watch. Then, you’d swing and miss.

On the way home you wanted to tell him you didn’t usually do that. But you knew then, and you

know now, that words cannot make a strikeout something that didn’t happen.

While musing about this, you notice out of the corner of your eye that your wife walked by a window overlooking the driveway.

And at that moment, you were just letting fly with another long

jump shot.

You figure she probably didn’t stop to watch. But you’re not sure.

There’s nice backspin on the ball, good follow through. It arcs high and drops toward its target. Will this be another basket?

You wait, thinking: Hey, it’s out of your hands.

Brewing plenty of buzz Coffee lovers give gold star reviews to Lake Forest’s new Starbucks

owed customers at the new Starbucks in downtown Lake Forest were spouting the same message as company management.

Starbucks opened with lines winding around the shop much of the morning September 23 just off Market Square at 672 North Western Avenue, trying to give customers an “elevated coffee experience,” according to District Manager Laura Edler.

Jane Eberly, a former Lake Forest resident now living in Colorado and in town for a wedding, was sitting at the clover bar drinking coffee. She expressed Edler’s words almost verbatim.

“They’ve elevated it to a higher level,” said Eberly. “It’s clearly

going to create a buzz around town.”

“There’s a lot of show, excitement,” said Reed Eberly, Jane Eberly’s husband. “They’ve taken the experience of coffee to a higher elevation.”

As Edler described the clover bar, a six-seat bar near the front of the store where espresso is brewed in the Black Eagle machine, she said the company wanted to give customers an “elevated coffee experience.” People can watch coffee brewed one cup at a time in special coffee makers, while the barista brewing it offers an explanation.

The food is unchanged and all the coffees brewed at the former Bank Lane location are still being made, but there are additional coffee choices. Edler said Starbucks has introduced its Reserve line, which includes sun dried cold brew, nitro sun dried cold brew and smoked butterscotch latte. The introduction of nitrogen offers a different feel.

“It’s a mouth feel,” said Edler.

“It’s not sparkling, not still. It’s something in the middle.”

BACK IN THE FRAY Lowell’s return from a severe injury a real positive for New Trier’s football team

J

ake Lowell found himself on a football field, in full uniform, last weekend. Big deal? It certainly was, to Lowell, a New Trier senior middle linebacker/defensive lineman/fullback in the fall and a wrestler in the winter.

“I thought it [his prep football career] was over,” said Lowell, following NT’s 38-17 defeat of visiting Evanston Township High School on Sept. 23. “I thought I’d never wrestle for New Trier again.”

The 5-foot-11, 210-pound had suffered a severely sprained right ankle in a 45-28 loss at Fremd on Sept. 9. His Game Face had turned into Anguish Face as he sat on a sideline bench and a trainer examined the ankle. Lowell later stood and tried to put weight on his right foot. He could not.

He returned to a seat on the metal bench, feeling frustrated and helpless.

Lowell had to sit out the next game, against Palatine High School on Sept. 16. A doctor eventually told him he could not injure the ankle any further than he had. Hope. A sliver of sunshine.

The patient gulped both doses.

The patient suited up for the Central Suburban League South opener last weekend and toted the first handoff from senior quarterback Clay Czyzynski for four yards. He would play some downs as a defensive lineman and carry the ball two more times and block for Czyzynski and senior running back Francis Fay. Busy, busy. Effective, effective.

NT rushed for 276 yards against Evanston’s Wildkits (3-2, 0-1).

“Jake,” Trevians football coach Brian Doll said, “made an amazing block on one of Fay’s touchdowns.

I can’t wait to see it again on film.

He’s a hard-nosed kid, with speed and strength and toughness. Such a tough kid. Loves football. Is passionate about football.”

Near the end of the game on Sept. 23, with the result no longer in doubt, Lowell fielded several questions from a few youngsters, ball boys, along NT’s sideline. One is a wrestler, like Lowell. They wanted to know about the blood

Effusive Spizman brings versatility and positivity to Highland Park volleyball team

D

ecades from now, Jocelyn Spizman’s current volleyball teammates at Highland Park High School might not remember the timely kill she pounded on a Thursday evening or the block she had on a set point at a weekend invitational. Too fleeting.

They probably won’t forget the times she sensed a concern and asked, “Would you like to talk about it?” or the times she simply listened and nodded or the times she organized a team activity and made sure it would unify the entire team. Too indelible.

“Very caring,” Giants senior libero Carly Nanberg says of her good friend since the two were kindergarteners. “People respect her a lot. She’s very responsible, a leader, definitely a leader.”

Spizman, a senior captain, stands 5-foot-11 and serves the Giants’ varsity volleyball team as a middle/outside hitter. She was a middle, only a middle, for the program in previous seasons. None of her 12 teammates this fall has more than one position listed after her name.

“I like her versatility,” Highland Park volleyball coach Beth Peterson says. “Her quick swings this year, from the right side, surprise opponents.

“Jocelyn also looks out for everybody on the team,” the coach adds. “She’s our caregiver, really giving. I can’t say enough good things about her. I can’t remember a time when she had a negative attitude … about anything. She’s positive in front of everybody, smiling every day, no matter how she’s feeling.”

A Spizman kill broke a 4-4 tie in the first set against visiting Maine East on Sept. 22. It stayed close for the next 15 points. A 7-3 run by HP gave it a 20-13 lead, momentum clearly settling in on the host’s side of the net. The Giants surfed the ‘mo’ to secure the set, 25-17, and Maine East’s hopes of maintaining an undefeated mark in the Central Suburban League North appeared fragile. HP won three of the first five points of the second set but lost 17 of the next 27 points. It was HP’s turn to trail 19-13.

At the top of the list of colleges in which Spizman is interested in attending is Emory University, down in Atlanta. She first learned all about the school in … Costa Rica. While on a family vacation.

“Random, I know,” she says.

“We met a family there, a family with daughters. The daughters told me all about Emory and suggested I look at it. I visited it, and the campus, the people, everything about the school was hospitable.

“I’m interested in becoming a doctor, either in pediatrics or oncology. I find cancer interesting … sad but interesting.”

Spizman finds time to serve as a board member of Key Club, a service club, at HPHS. She works with autistic kids in Highwood, joining them for afternoons of boxing and playing basketball and priceless engagement. Involvement in Educators of Tomorrow at the school allows her to tutor children and help them with their homework at local elementary schools.

Good friend and listener, reliable volleyball player and leader, student, volunteer. Jocelyn Spizman, consummate studentathlete, is all of them. Her unofficial major in high school: balance.

Impact volleyball player? Yes. Impactful teen?

SMASH HIT Athenson turns in crowd-pleasing performance in LF’s win over Libertyville

A

ndrew Athenson didn’t seem to mind being the last one to leave the locker

room.

The safety, who had displayed impeccable timing during Lake Forest’s “must” win over visiting Libertyville on Sept. 23, was off the clock.

And yet, even on Homecoming, Athenson wasn’t going to rush a postgame interview with a local sportswriter.

The kid majors in politeness.

He’s unfailingly courteous.

Of course, you might get a totally different take from the good people of Libertyville.

Athenson’s impeccable timing came into play a couple of times in LF’s 28-14 victory.

In fact, it was Rolex watch good.

Athenson has no separation issues, when it comes to busting up pass plays. The senior safety may not wow you with his measurables — 5-foot-9, 173 pounds — but he’s proved time and time again that he’s pretty darn good at playing smash-mouth football.

Libertyville wideout Nick Angel found out first.

Late in the first quarter, Angel was all set to haul in a deep pass down the middle — until the ball was jarred loose by Athenson’s jolting hit.

“I thought I timed that one pretty well,” Athenson, a slight smile on his face, said.

Pass breakup No. 2? Even more timely. It was on the dot.

With Lake Forest holding a precarious 21-14 advantage with three minutes left in regulation, the Wildcats (3-2) did something bold and necessary — going for it on fourth-and-10 at their own 13-yard line — while Athenson did something loud and boisterous.

Quarterback Jack Ruskell’s over-the-middle, on-target pass attempt to Wildcat wide receiver Lucas Rossetti had first-down distance — until Athenson blew the play up with a tumultuous hit.

“I knew [Rossetti] would be running up the seam,” said Athenson, perfectly playing the role of a centerfielder. “I just had to make sure that I didn’t get there

But, I honestly don’t care where I play as long as we win.

“This was fun tonight,” he added. “I’m going to be sore in the morning.”

Notable: Running back Liam Pooler (25 carries, 114 yards), quarterback Charlie Reinkemeyer (6-18-1, 85 yards) and wide receivers Reed Thomas (2 catches, 31 yards) and Ryan Cekay (2-33) sparked the offense.

CAN’T STOP HUSTLING Serious, tenacious Hickey goes all out all the time for upstart Ramblers

S

ean Hickey crash-landed at the end of the first half of a soccer match last weekend.

The senior forward from Loyola Academy and a Trevian from New Trier had battled for a 50/50 ball, the Trevian sliding, the upended Hickey going airborne.

It looked a lot like a human bowling ball picking up a one-pin spare.

Hickey hit the turf at New Trier’s Northfield campus. Hard.

Rough but clean.

His 5-foot-10, 150-pound frame bounced slightly. Hickey stayed on the turf for a few seconds on Sept. 23. The first half had ended. Hickey got up, straightened his maroon togs, marched briskly toward his teammates. No time for wincing.

Time to gather with his teammates and listen to their coach, Baer Fisher.

“I felt fine,” the Rambler would say later.

Hickey, a second-year captain and third-year varsity member, endured more collisions in the second half of Loyola Academy’s 1-0 loss, only its second setback in 14 matches. He popped up each time, never losing his deadserious look, never shedding his resolve. He sprinted here, darted there. He made lengthy runs to track down lengthy passes from teammates. Hickey hustled to get in position to boot a shot on goal in the second half, nearly curling the ball through a small space (the two-hole) to the left of NT junior goalkeeper Sam Warden (four saves). The ball, alas, nestled inside goal twine located out of bounds.

Ramblers sophomore midfielder Collin Leider, impressed with Hickey’s effort, extended his right hand toward Hickey, hoping to receive a gentle slap in return.

Hickey, about 10 feet from Leider, “air-slapped” in the general direction of his teammate instead. He was focused, way too focused, on hustling back as Warden prepared for a goalie kick.

“He’s into the game, never stops grinding, never stops fighting for the ball,” Ramblers captain and senior midfielder Julian Hilpusch said. “Every game he comes out firing. He’s got crazy speed.

Soccer is his thing, his major thing this autumn, his cool activity, and Fisher intends to enjoy the sights of Hickey dictating matters and fatiguing midfielders and defenders in matches during the rest of the regular season and all of the postseason.

The coach won’t be alone.

Notable: A Loyola Academy soccer player went down in agony, suffering from what appeared to be a leg cramp in the second half of the LA-New Trier match on Sept. 23. A New Trier player rushed to help. Hatching fresh ideas no yoke for Good Egg Concepts owner

E

ver meet a person who appears to smile even when the person isn’t smiling? I did. They are out there. They are must-get-to-know people.

I meet Rebecca Hoffman one morning at Café Boungiorno in Winnetka. Her eyes appear to grin as she orders an omelet, potatoes and whole wheat toast.

The waiter takes my order. The waiter nods and walks away from our table. Hoffman faces me and starts to talk. Her voice is riseand-shine cheery, a giggle always at the tip of her tongue.

It must be a gift, pulling off the smile-without-smiling feat, I surmise after only five minutes of getting to know Hoffman, a 45-year-old Glencoe resident and founder and principal of Good Egg Concepts, her home-based consulting firm serving business and not-for-profit clients.

Hoffman is more than a successful businesswoman. Much more. Get her on the topic of comedy and be prepared to hear her animated thoughts about the late Jacques Tati, the French filmmaker and comic actor, and Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David and Louis C.K. and 90-year-old Mel Brooks, “the greatest living comedian,” she says.

“I follow comedians like a lot of people follow sports figures,” she adds. “Comedy is nourishing.

You have to maintain a sense of humor, or you are doomed. Have you ever taken improv classes at Second City?”

“No,” I say to the woman who took improv classes at Second City in her late 30s.

The only child of a cellist/psychotherapist/ marathon runner father (Leon) and a gemstone specialist/violinist mother (Barbara) grew up in Chicago and attended Francis W. Parker School in the city. Francis Parker’s commitment to the arts is its hallmark, a perfect environment for a young Rebecca Hoffman.

“I come from a very creative family; my parents are cool people,” she says.

“Ideas and art and literature and music were celebrated at home. At work, I get into a creative zone; it’s a soft zone, never firm.

There is no straight line to coming up with something in the creative process. What I do for my clients takes iterations and prototyping, thinking big on some days, scaling down on others. I have a network of creative people (designers and printers, tagline specialists and photographers, among others). I do matchmaking for clients, and the challenge is to come up with ways to present things in a fabulous

Some of her “forever places,” or places where she could live forever: Hawaii, New York City, La Jolla, California.

Rebecca and Dan reconnected.

They dated for a ye a r, never having to worry about the blare of a buzzer again.

They got married. Her husband is a vice president of anal y tics for a major manufact u re r.

“The challenge,” she adds, “is also the reward.”

The business matchmaker, a graduate of the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, met her future husband, Dan Pikelny, at a speed dating event

held at a vegetarian restaurant in Chicago. They engaged in conversation for seven minutes, not one second longer. A rule is a rule. On to the next date. On your mark, get set, get to know. The topic of travel had lifted Rebecca and Dan. Travel, to Hoffman,

“Abby, she is driven, so driven.

She wakes up some days and decides to create a PowerPoint Presentation.

“The house,” she adds, “it’s my first. I get to deal with trees and lawns for the first time. I love it.

I’d been living in apartments all of my life. I consider living in a house an adventure, like mountain climbing.”

Hoffman does not need a Sherpa to guide her through her ideal day, which includes spending at least an hour to learn something new. She read about the history of Glencoe one day.

She read the account of a woman who grew up in the Chelsea Hotel in New York on another day. An avid library goer, she likes to check out books, featuring subjects she normally wouldn’t consume, and gobble up the information. Food for thoughtprovoking conversations.

“Each ideal day I also like to meet people I don’t know and get together with people I know,” she says. “In between those encounters, I like to tend to projects that are percolating, spend time in front of a screen, working digitally.
