A Tale of Two Houses: The New One BY JULIE KEMP PICK DAILYNORTHSHORE.COM
The old adage “make new friends but keep the old” works with humans, pets and even things – but can it apply to real estate? How do you satisfy people who love the heritage, romance and quirks of old houses while also providing a stock of new homes that meet the no-fuss requirements of today’s busy buyers? One solution: Instead of demolishing the old house, move it to a different neighborhood and build a new one in its place. This series profiles two Wilmette homes: One, a 88-year-old, 1,500-square-foot Prairie-style house designed by American architect John Van Bergen. Architect and historic preservationist Chris Enck purchased the home for $10 in 2014 and had it moved last fall – in shifts – to Evanston. The second home in this series profiles the 5,700-square-foot, American farm style house that developer Joe Rodriguez built in its place. Here’s Dawn and Eric at home with their children.
