Police: Thieves Targeting North Shore

HIGHLAND PARK— f you ask members of North Suburban Synagogue (NSS) Beth El about Michael Salberg, they’ll probably remember how he sang and did impressions at the talent show a few years ago. He’s also brought many interesting programs to the NSS Beth El Men’s Club, and had everyone in stitches during his acceptance speech when he was honored as “Man of the Year” in 2011. But when it comes to softball, Salberg takes his job as commissioner very seriously. Salberg along with other members from NSS Beth El started the first synagogue-only league in Highland Park three years ago because “we wanted a league for Jewish men for the purpose of fraternity and brotherhood,” he said. “This year I decided that we should also be about tzedakah, which is the Hebrew word for charity.” The next step was asking the captains from the nine participating synagogues to submit ideas for charities. “We decided on the Friendship Circle of Buddy Baseball in Israel, which allows special needs children to participate in sports with the help of a buddy,” said Salberg. “There is a Buddy Baseball League in Buffalo Grove, which has been a huge success. It’s run by one of my classmates, Dean Klassman and the new Israeli program needed the funds.” To support the Friendship Circle of Buddy Baseball in Israel, each of the 12 teams in the league will donate funds. “My goal is to raise $500 a team, which would be $6,000,” said Salberg. “Certain Men’s Clubs like

olice in Lake Forest, Wilmette, Glencoe and Lake Bluff are urging residents to lock their doors after several cars were stolen and dozens burglarized in June in what police believe is a targeted effort by young adults from Chicago to steal luxury vehicles from driveways and garages in the northern suburbs. “They Google words like ‘rich’ and ‘mansion’ and come up to towns like Wilmette, Highland Park and Lake Forest, driving around in the evenings and looking for unlocked cars to steal,” said Lake Forest Police Commander Craig Lepkowski. “They like high-end, foreign brands and say they come to the North Shore because they are almost guaranteed they will find unlocked cars.” Continued on PG 13
