Kamp Gallery reopens in Highland Park BY JULIE KEMP PICK
H
IGHLAND PARK — Last fall when Nick and Barbara Vahlkamp closed the doors to Kamp Gallery in Winnetka, their retirement was short-lived. Just two months later, the couple decided to embark on a new career in private wholesale. The reason? They missed working. “We had a gallery closing sale from September through November of 2015, and sold more than half of our inventory,” said Nick Vahlkamp. “We found out about this space from Charlie Barnes, the owner of Custom Framer who we’ve worked with for as long as we’ve been on the North Shore, and he’s just four doors down from here.” The couple has also been living in Highland Park for 27 years. “We’ve lived in our starter house in the Ravinia neighborhood since 1989,” said Vahlkamp. “We fixed it up and put in a new basement and everything else, and we’re still there. By the time we could afford to buy a new house, we didn’t want to leave and our oldest child was just leaving for college.”
